Greetings Friends to be good examples for each other. I want to get back to playing music for people, dining together and going on trips and this is something we can do for the good of all us. I did it, you can do it. There are still a lot of fun things to do out there. We have so many beautiful places nearby, we have bike rides in the green hills, we have almond blossoms, we can roller skate with our families, we can run and ride our bike trails, we can enjoy our restaurant patios and enjoy some live mu-

This is a big month if you are a Murphy or any part Irish. St. Patrick’s Day is one of those special days where everyone feels Irish so it’s good for all of us! We all need a bit of the luck of the Irish about now. It is also one year ago that the doors all closed behind us as COVID-19 spread around the world. It was weird, as we didn’t know what was going to happen, how far it was going to spread and what we had to do to be safe. A lot has changed in the last 12 months. The things we took for granted, the concerts, the parties, the live music, the family gatherings, birthday parties, weddings and even births and funerals have all changed. We have all learned to roll with it as best as we can and all I can say, we have to stay tough and make sure we do it right until we have it more under control. The weather is getting nice, more people are vaccinated and we are getting close, but let’s not blow it. For your family and my family, our coworkers and our friends, lets cross the finish line before we call victory too soon. I have my first vaccine shot and I will be getting my second shot really soon. I encourage you all to get one, if not for yourself, for your coworkers or your friends. Mine was painless, a bit of a sore arm for a day and then all good. We need

sic, and we can enjoy our homes, and we can enjoy our neighborhoods where there are new playgrounds, like East LaLoma Park that features a brand new kids playground, conveniently located next to the gazebo with swings, climbing wall, slides and more. Big shout out to the LaLoma Neighborhood Association for rallying to raise the funds, Deborah Steinberg for her excellent direction, the amazing support of Jeff Reed and the George Reed Company and the partnership of the City of Modesto. Amazing things can happen, even in COVID that make our community better for all. Let’s not lose hope, but be deliberate in our plans, our connections and try to look out for each other and make Modesto a better place daily. It is

good to have that purpose. This month, we look at the amazing women for National Women’s History month. There are so many women that have made a huge difference in our city, from Rose Maddox to our new mayor Sue Zwahlen to the young women that will make a difference in the future. We are at a time where trust and teamwork has never been more important as we are coming from very divided times. Community events, our projects, our common goals are what can bring us together as we make the city we want to live in. There are things we still have to figure out, like will we have MoBand this year, or will we have Graffiti Summer and what will opening day of baseball be like this season and how to we all go back to school safely. Much of this will be figured out in the next 30 days so there is a lot to watch out for. I look forward to the beauty of the camellias in our community. I look forward to the amazing Irish coffee I will drink and the corned beef I will eat. I look forward riding my bike on our local trails and I look forward to the people that I meet that will make a difference for our community and encourage people to be bold and create an amazing place. I can’t wait for my grandson to start enjoying our new playground and growing up in Modesto. One thing I know for sure, we can depend on our friends, our local businesses and our families to make these changes with us. We need to live, love, learn, eat, drink and exist local, now more than ever. Let’s accelerated through the next window and be strong and safe. Thank you all for being a part of our story. We are writing it as we go and we all can control how the story goes. Who needs video games when we have this amazing real life. See you out and about and I wish you love, health and safety. COMMUNITY VIEW

Save Souls Skate Bowls

By Tasha Wilson Hey Positive Peeps! After taking at least a 25-year break from roller skating, I am back at it strong and loving it! With that being said, I hear an awful lot about what goes on in the skating community here in Stanislaus County. People share stories about finding places to ice skate, rollerblade, and skateboard here in our city. Recently, I learned of a group taking skating to new heights with random acts of kindness. They give away skateboards to at-risk youth in and around our area. There are quite a few moving heads that started this group. Four, to be exact! There is Devin Dorrity, Erik Baus, Carlos Carrasco, and Charles Insco. Together, these men have begun an exciting new movement! Carlos Carrasco had already been giving away skateboards and joined Devin after hearing his vision. Charles Insco oversees the networking aspect of the group. This project began with a friendship between Devan and Erik. Both had difficulties during their childhood. Often in their adult years, they brainstormed about ways they could start something to help struggling youth in and around Stanislaus County. During a conversation about their newfound passion, Erik jokingly said, “We’re out here saving souls and skating bowls!” They laughed and Devin thought: “That should be on a shirt!” Devin was serious about Erik’s phrase, and he reached out to his friend, Erika Vega. Vega made the tee shirts and Save Souls Skate Bowls launched! Devin went on to tell me, “Erik and I discussed coming from a broken past and how we would enjoy helping the youth. Each of us have a different reason as to why we do this work, but the same end goal in mind. We want to reach our participants on an emotional level.” When the skateboards are given out, the guys usually offer a skate lesson as well.

There really is no rhyme or reason about how or where they decide to take skateboards. They just go – Sometimes as far out as Sacramento, California! Due to COVID-19, kids are just stuck in the house and battling depression and anxiety so badly. Thankfully, Modesto has four great guys trying to level up the emotional support to youth who may otherwise fall through the cracks. Devin Dorrity, Erik Baus, Carlos Carrasco, and Charles Insco are putting a halt to some heartaches by bringing joy to the children in our community – One skateboard at a time! To date, the group has given away

about 60 skateboards and by the end of the year, their collective goal is to have a fully running Non-Profit organization that will continue helping at-risk youth within our local community. If you have any skateboards and would like to donate to this heartfelt cause, please take your gifts to Yours and Mine Sports in Modesto, California, or take them to Wild Wood Skate Shop in Lodi, California. Art from Chaos By Jim Christiansen

I don’t know if “Beware the Ides of March” appropriate this year. Mid-month may see the further recovery of the Arts Scene as more of us get vaccinated, more venues begin to open once again. Mistlin Gallery has had a slow open after Valentine’s Day and Life Drawing sessions have resumed, so in-person classes may be coming up. The gift shop is open and recently updated. A promising start for the revived season, “Young at Art” annual student show will open on March 4. For events and class updates see the Central California Art Association/Mistlin Gallery web site at http://ccaagallery.org Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock has resumed its schedule and offering both online events, Family Fridays and exhibition displays. Carnegie Director Lisa McDermott was recently featured on the Mistlin Gallery “Expose Yourself to Art” online Facebook Live and YouTube presentations. The series is getting a good backlog of interviews in local arts, so check out their YouTube library for past episodes and look for them live, usually on Sunday Afternoons. “Expose Yourself to Art” program notices posted on the Mistlin Gallery Facebook Page. Stanislaus Artist Open Studio Tour. A recent poll of the participating artists opted to reschedule again, for later in the Summer or Fall. The artists are ready, but the risks associated with visitors, inadequate lead time for publicity that the event requires cancels the event for now. Artists are optimistic it will happen this year. When Artists Open Studio picks a new date, I will have noticed here in the Art View column and information at www.modestoview.com and other media to let you know what changes to the map, artists participating, and at what venues and studios. Art spots offering online and drop-in classes are The Dragonfly Art for Life on J Street, http://thedragonflyartforlife.com and the Chartreuse Muse open Saturdays noon to 4 pm http://theChartreuseMuse. com and the Queen Bean Coffee House with Kristy Moore. More of our art displays will be opening as we head into April. Valentino Alexander has a change of art following up what he has had on display at Barkin Dog Grill, and it’s free to view and up for sale. Great to see if dining in or pick up food. Picasso’s Gourmet Deli and Gallery at 10th and J always have art and food on hand. Modesto Conservatory of Music, Art and Theater (10th and E Streets) and Peer Recovery Art Project (950 10th Street Suite 16) have been partnering on several special promotions for the community.

St. Patrick’s Day

falls on a Wednesday this year. It was this time last year that COVID took center stage and literally shut our community down over two to three days. This year, it will be a different kind of St. Patrick’s Day where most people will be doing their own personal celebration. Roman Wagner, proprietor of P. Wexford’s and the award winning St. Patrick’s Celebration looking forward to when the annual MAMA Award winning big party can return, but in the meantime, all of your Irish favorites will be on deck. We are even hoping to be treated to bagpipe music while we get our bangers and mash, with a Black and Tan, or even a pint of Murphy’s. Count me among the hopeful for that. We live in a place that is surrounded by the most amazing farm to fork tastes and the freshest of everything. BUT, this month we turn our eyes toward the great island in the north Atlantic that makes the world turn green with luck. The luck of the Irish. As a Murphy, this is part of our family culture and the camaraderie, the history and the traditions of Irish food ring true here in Modesto. For the record, everyone is an honorary Irish person on St. Patrick’s Day, celebrating that legend of eliminating the snakes from Ireland with a pint of Guinness, some Irish Whiskey and corned beef and cabbage. Beef was an upgrade from the ham and bacon for the Irish immigrants arriving in the US and cabbage was literally the cheapest vegetable available. Hence the meal we enjoy today. Let’s do this. On the cocktail side, there is ONE gold standard for Irish Coffee and it is the Buena Vista in San Francisco, were legend has it, the Irish Coffee was actually invented. If you haven’t been there to try it, you need to. So who has taken the true tradition seriously and who is riffing on the coffee? St. Patrick’s will be much different this year. Last year, the doors were closing on the 17th of May with the spread of COVID. This year instead of the big parties, many of our local watering holes and restaurants will be doing Irish fare for the WEEK of St. Patrick’s Day. I think this is a great trend. We need to have a St. Patrick’s season. Who’s with me? Let’s check out the local scoop.

Ralston’s Goat P Wexford’s .

This is the home base for Modesto’s St. Patrick’s Day and Irish fare in general. Not to say that other places don’t step up, but P. Wexford’s lives this all year long. Corned Beef and Cabbage is on the menu 365 days a year, and a Black and Tan is on deck all of the time. It is fun to be able to enjoy the Irish pub life all the time, with music inside and out, and even Murphy’s on tap during March. St. Patrick’s Day starts early with Irish breakfast and lunch, and continues through the evening. The annual party will not be happening, but patio dining and music and more will be featured along with the amazing food as well as bagpipes and live music. You can always get an Irish Coffee and a pub meal and if you have not had any of this, you should try it this month. @PWexfords

So far, Ralston’s Goat has taken the Buena Vista version of the Irish Coffee the most seriously. I can attest that hours were spent, working on the right blend to make it memorable. Meticulously prepared with Irish Whiskey, Sugar Cube, Coffee and FRESH whipped cream, this is pure and simple and amazing and the whip cream treatment has sometimes taken a life of its own. Alas, over the last few months, the Goat has been closed, but talking to Mike Shelton and bartender Jenn Allsup, there could be an opening soon. Stay tuned at @ralstonsgoat

Their day in and day out Irish Coffee will make you warm and happy. @fuziobistro

Bauer’s Downtown

Tye Bauer is all in for St. Patrick’s Day. I know he is probably already prepping his corned beef that most surely will make it into his famous burger. This is a great way to enjoy this brined meat and with his relishes and dressings, this will be an immediate favorite. Look for specials all week and you can get a special treat on St. Patrick’s Day as Tye takes over food duties at Grains of Virtue in Oakdale on the 17th and will be featuring his corned beef specials. When I asked him about it, he said, “I am always Irish food doing! Lol. We will Be out at grains of virtue doing a whole Irish menu We also have our own version of corned beef and cabbage and of course the beloved 317 burger ground corned beef burger with the slaw you love so much with Irish cheddar cheese”. Are you drooling yet? Check out @8229thstreetmodestoca

You know it is going to be good with Hank Olsen and the Food Fix team. It is already planning a special menu, and Ashley is working up her specialties as well. I asked him what was coming up and he said, “Yeah we are going to do our Corned Beast, Beer Braised Corned Pork, Horse Radish, 1000 Island, House Cured Sauerkraut, on our Fresh Baked Pretzel Roll. Also Irish Themed cookies and desserts”. Do I need to go on? You know what to do. Check them out at @foodfixbutherandbaker

Galletto Ristorante

The crew at Galletto are planning an entire St. Patrick’s feast. This is going to run from the beginning of the meal all the way to the end. You can also get this dinner to go, but the patio set up at Galletto is one of the best in town. Bagpipe music will be featured as well so you can get your total Irish When we asked about why they are featuring this, they said “Ten years ago Tom Gallo, Sid Long, and Don Agresti started a delicious celebration blending Tom’s Irish and Italian heritage. With the traditions passed on to us from Sid Long (1936-2019) and Don Agresti (1937-2014). We will be serving corned beef and cabbage (Sid’s secret recipe), Irish potatoes, vegetables, and family-style pesto pasta (Don’s specialty). Made with love in honor of these great men. You can’t go wrong. Stay tuned at @gallettoristo

Twisted Pig

Our friend Griffin Dye is ready for St. Patrick’s day at the Twisted Pig. This will be part of the all-day hang out series with specials starting at 11 am. You can ennui all day on our outdoor bar and patio.” Check it out at @twistedpigbarandgrill

The Moose is Loose!

will have plenty of house-made Corned Beef, Beer Brats, Whiskey Brats and more all St. Patrick’s week. Follow them for more info! And if you want to get the season started off with a great outdoor sport, try the St. Patrick’s Bike Crawl that will go from Bookies, to Low Key to P. Wexford’s. So much fun beginning at 11 am. These are just a few of the great options for this special day. It may not be the big celebrations we are used to, but take the time to do what you can, celebrate safely and support our local business that are trying to make it thought these tough times. We could all use a little luck of the Irish as we make our way through this together. Erin Go Bragh! Thoughts on Stella Beratlis By Sam Pierstorff If you are lucky enough to call Stella Beratlis a friend, you are truly lucky to have a fighter (metaphorically speaking) on your side. Stella knows the pen is mightier than the sword and she wields it well. Stella is an academic and an activist, a poet and an advocate for students. She doesn’t just spout untruths and rage Tweet. She researches, investigates, dives deeply into subjects that matter and then relays that information in a thoughtful and persuasive way. Personally, when I am confronted by a challenging topic, I find myself asking, “What does Stella think?” Then I peruse her Facebook page or email her directly. I never just get an answer in return. Instead, I get a detailed, thoroughly fact-checked, and responsible answer based on research and scholarship. She’s like a human Snopes, but way more fun. As her dear friend and poet GillianWegener writes, “Stella Beratlis has been serving others for decades. In her work as a poet, in her work as a librarian, and in her volunteer work, she has shown concern for the wider community of women and girls in particular, but for all residents of Stanislaus County.” Stella is a dedicated librarian at Modesto Junior College, Modesto’s Poet Laureate (2016-2020), and a founding member of

the Modesto-Stanislaus Poetry Center. As a poet herself, she has written two collections: Alkali Sink (2015) and her second collection, Dust Bowl Venus, is forthcoming from Sixteen Rivers Press. She has coordinated numerous poetry readings, including Writers’ Resist, and has supported the Collision Poetry/ Photography exhibit and continues to bring diverse poets to the MJC library to celebrate National Poetry Month. Whether she is serving as the president of the Modesto Friends of the Library or supporting the efforts of the League of Women Voters, Stella’s contributions to Modesto as a poet, activist, and academic are monumental to those who know her. For those who don’t, it’s time to get to know this amazing woman.

Sue Zwahlen By Chris Murphy

For the third time in Modesto’s history, the citizens have chosen a woman as Mayor of Modesto. Needless to say, this should have happened much earlier in our history, but we are on the brink of a new era, with many challenges, political division amongst our people and last but certainly last but not least, a pandemic that none of us has faced. There is no new normal yet, the rules have all changed, but we need to press forward to keep our community healthy and at the same time help our people and business survive for the future. Sue Zwahlen has a deep history in Modesto, her children were in the public school system along my kids. We have a multi-cultural city that we have to move forward and engage people from all parts of Modesto. Sue served on the Modesto City Schools Board and is retired ER nurse and has seen both sides of this pandemic. We celebrate people that put their hat into the ring, to step forward to make a difference. We have a new city council make up, budget challenges and an opportunity to chart a new direction. How will we do this? Sue lives in the College area with her husband. Let’s get to know Sue and learn about her plans. ModestoView: Growing up here in Modesto, how do you feel it is different now? Sue Zwahlen: It’s much larger but has maintained its small town friendliness. MV: We have just come out of one of the most divided elections in US history, what can you do to bring Modestans together? SZ: I will do my best to do what I’ve always tried to do: serve everyone regardless of ethnicity, religion, sexual or political orientation. I’m a Democrat, and my husband is a Republican. My mom was a Republican, and my dad was a Democrat. My grandparents were split parties. So I’ve had experience listening to both sides and debating the issues. I know how to get along with people I may not agree with. MV: What do you feel the most pressing issue is in Modesto?

12

SZ: COVID-19 recovery. After that, safety, economic development, homelessness / affordable housing and accountability. MV: Dining and food are such a big part of Modesto, how do we help them through this without losing local businesses? SZ: This is such a difficult time for them, to say the least. Ordering takeout helps, but not enough. We need to do everything we can to promote and support them as we’re able to open up. The RAD program and reconfiguring parking to allow outdoor options were examples of that, and I am open to anything else that will allow the industry to recover and thrive. MV: I believe that a city that has lots of live music and performing arts will be the creative cities of the future, what do we need to do to make sure this is treated like the valuable economy that it is? SZ: We need to promote it in every way possible, through social media, Visit Modesto, DOMO, and encouraging everyone, especially young people, to get involved. They are our future. We oldsters remember when local high schools and other groups had local bands

provide the music for dances. I miss that. I would love to see more live bands performing outdoors downtown and elsewhere. Hopefully, as the pandemic subsides, we can see a rebirth of Porchfest and other great musical events. MV: It seems to many that government doesn’t work. What will you do to make sure that our local government does work and how will you communicate that? SZ: I would challenge the naysayers to run for public office, help someone running, or serve the community for a while and then ask themselves if it works. Democracy only works if we all participate! Government is designed to be deliberative and thoughtful. One person does not unilaterally make decisions for everyone. There must be discussion, debate and open, transparent communication. That’s what I intend to facilitate, in order to increase trust in our local government. MV: Modesto’s history is very interesting, and we have a great place in the world with our Graffiti culture, our hometown heroes and our innovative industry. What do we need to do to bring this all together as part of our community brand?

SZ: Our history, especially our graffiti culture, is based on young people growing up in Modesto. We must continue to educate and remind our citizens of those times. I once spoke to a high school class about the 1960’s. One of the students said, “I wish I was alive back then.” I reminded her that, although it sounded dreamy, it was also a time of huge divisions and conflict in our country. We must share those memories, positive and negative, and do all we can to support and keep alive our Modesto traditions. Our rich cultural diversity is also a strength that needs to be shared and celebrated often. MV: What do we need to do to attract the young professionals, the coders, and encourage the next generation to stay or locate here? SZ: We have an opportunity to attract people to Modesto with employees working from home. They can work from anywhere, why not Modesto? We have beautiful weather, trails, lakes, orchards and tree-lined streets. More affordable housing and promoting our downtown dining and entertainment are critical. We need to create a vibrant city that attracts everyone here! I am impressed with the many community groups and leaders who are currently working to do this. MV: If you had unlimited budget, what would be the first thing you would tackle? SZ: Caring for our homeless residents. As someone who has treated them for years in the ER, and seen this population explode, I can hardly bear thinking of them exposed to the elements all day and through the night. MV: How will you translate your experience as a nurse, parent and school board member to being an efficient manager of Modesto City Council and our initiatives? SZ: As an eight-year member of the Modesto City Schools Board, we managed over 4,000 employees, a $350 million budget, dozens of campuses with hundreds of buildings, and a geographic area larger than the city of Modesto. On a daily basis, I interacted with parents, teachers, administrators and school staff, handling both complex education issues, philosophical differences, and the very personal – and sometimes heated - concerns that parents have about their children. In addition, my experience as an ER nurse and decades of involvement with community groups that served the homeless, poor, and ethnically diverse communities and their needs, has made me acutely aware of the complex challenges our city faces. I truly believe that all of this has prepared me for the responsibility of running our city.

SZ: Choosing one is not easy. Growing up in Modesto, riding my bicycle all over town - way out to the orchards on College Avenue - playing at Graceada Park every summer day, visiting my grandparents on their local farms, eating fresh picked fruit from their orchards … I could go on and on. Raising our family in a friendly, safe, caring city, was important to us. Modesto provided that environment for me as a child and a parent.

MV: What will you do to encourage volunteerism and teamwork in our neighborhoods and civic services? SZ: Everywhere I go, I challenge everyone to identify what they are passionate about in our community and then encourage them to sign up to help. Don’t just simply talk about it – act on it!! Plant flowers in your neighborhood garden, read to a child, volunteer at a food pantry, make calls for a non-profit, help greet newcomers at your place of worship, help clean up your park or street, or do whatever you’re inspired to do. Just imagine, if everyone did that for only a few hours a week, what a difference it would make in our city! MV: What is one of your best Modesto memories?

MV: Describe your perfect day in Modesto? SZ: A perfect day for me in Modesto starts out by driving through tree-lined streets to downtown Modesto for hot chocolate. I interact every day with so many people one on one, while facing the most important issues of the day head-on to try and make a difference in our community. I enjoy spending time with my husband, children, their spouses and our ten grandchildren. I end the day writing in my journal, expressing gratitude for all that I have and then getting a good night’s sleep, to do it all again the next day! MV: Beatles or Stones ? SZ: Beatles – although I was at Altamont Speedway on that fateful day when the Rolling Stones played there. Contact Sue at mayor@modestogov.com

“What should we do today?” “I don’t know...what do you wanna do?” “Is there anything we can do around here?” Sound familiar? Well, this time of year in Modesto is the perfect time to put on a sweatshirt, grab your hiking or walking shoes and go enjoy this season’s clear blue skies! You may have missed taking an almond blossom cruise the past few weeks but that’s no reason to avoid the great outdoors... Did you know that the covered bridge in Knight’s Ferry is the longest covered bridge west of the Mississippi? It’s a National Historic Landmark and smack dab in the middle of Stanislaus River Park with trails on both sides of the river. You can hike, barbecue, fish and enjoy the beauty of our region less than 30 minutes from downtown Modesto! Check out this park and more about the Stanislaus River parks at https://stanislausriver.com/ Perhaps you miss going to art galleries or museums? Then take a tour of the 125+ public works of art in Modesto. You can do the downtown walking tour and use this link on your mobile phone, momurals.com. Or you can jump in your car and take check out the alleys on the west side of McHenry from Morris Ave to Needham, drive up Yosemite Ave or walk the Helen White Trail to see some in West Modesto. Go grab some binoculars (or borrow some) and check out the wildlife in our area. The Stanislaus Audubon Society offers great info on what to see and where to see it if you want to try birding (https://www.stanislausbirds.org/ and there’s a fun podcast with members on the Get Fresh podcast). Maybe you just want to get some fresh air closer to home, walking or biking, and should try walking the creek in East La Loma Park (I like to head east through the Children’s Forest and further between Oakdale Road and Claus Road) or even a take a pleasant sojourn from Downtown along the Virginia Corridor. No matter what there’s always somewhere to go and something to do that gets you outta the house and enjoying the bounties that surround us! W E I V Modesto BIG

Women’s History

There have been many milestones in our country recently and even here in our community. The first woman vice president was elected giving a new voice to women across the USA and even around the world, still we are behind the curve when many other countries have had women leaders, prime ministers and presidents. There are women in Modesto’s history that have really made their marks, and one of the best legacies you can leave is the next generation that get involved and make a difference. We are just highlighting a few of the women that have made such a difference and some of these are making a difference now and are currently inspiring. I know that there are many more and we invite you to add to this group and send in your tribute to info@modestoview.com and we will publish on line.

Rose Maddox 1938 Modesto, a poor farm food-picking family in Modesto found an escape through music. With the hard work of Fred Maddox, the Maddox family found a lead singer for a KTRB radio show sponsored by Rice Furniture. Her other brother Clay Maddox played guitar to Fred’s innovative and ground breaking slappin’ bass. After WWII, the Maddox family sound gained nationwide attention, creating a new Rockabilly sound that entertained and inspired, even a young Elvis and his bassist Bill Black and generations of rockin’ cats through today and it all started here.

Odessa Johnson

From a westbound train from the segregated south to Modesto as a teacher, Odessa Johnson blazed trails. She was a highschool classmate of Jesse Jackson and her escape from the segregated south was to get an education. She taught at Modesto High until 1970 and then became an MJC counselor. She ran for office and served on the Modesto City School board, and then served UC Regent until 2012 representing the central valley. She was awarded an NAACP award in 2020 and served with the Soroptimist International of Modesto, AAUW, and Delta Kappa Gamma, inspiring a new generation of leaders.

Bette Belle Smith Born in Modesto she lived a life of community service that started early. Bette Belle was a dancer when she was young and became really engaged in the community as she became a banker. She was named Woman of Year, Soroptimist International, in 1958 and went on to receive just about every honor possible for her generosity, willingness to volunteer and her secret sauce was to get others to volunteer. Throughout the 1970s to the 2000s, her desk at the bank was location of many “an ask” (to which you could not say no) to get involved. Her requests were irresistible and worthwhile. She was a fixture as Mrs. Modesto, Mrs. Claus, Christmas Angel for Salvation Army and at her regular spot at the summer MoBand concerts with her husband Jean where she regularly offered cookies. Our volunteer spirit in our community is strong thanks to Bette Belle.

Peggy Mensinger Peggy was Modesto’s first woman mayor, serving from 1979 – 1987. She was a native Modestan and grew up on the area fruit drying farms, ultimately attending Stanford University. She ran and was elected to Modesto City Council in 1973. She was a strong advocate of recycling, village concepts for development, farmland preservation and campaign finance reform. She was very active with PTA, Girl Scouts and developing volunteerism with her friend Bette Belle Smith. She lead an early effort to build a performing arts center in the 1970s. She was always very friendly, humble and offered a warm welcome to her home on Magnolia.

Marie Gallo She is Modesto’s best friend for the performing arts. Born Marie Damrell, she was trained in classical piano and performed extensively. Married to Bob Gallo and raising a large family, Marie became a force for the performing arts, working tirelessly to bring a professional performing arts center to Modesto. The Gallo Center for the Arts was the work of the strong willed Marie and her amazing army of volunteers and fund-raisers. Marie has been honored by many groups and her passion for the community and the arts was infectious and successful. Her legacy, donations, and inspiration for excellence, giving and volunteerism has inspired many that will take us to new places.

Woman of History:

Hazel Houser Spencer

by Stella Beratlis Hazel Houser Spencer, Stanislaus County lyricist and composer of many country and gospel songs of renown, is not widely known outside of country music and bluegrass history circles. I’ve been on a personal mission, of sorts, to change that. This year, I nominated Hazel Houser Spencer for a Woman of History award for the Stanislaus County Commission for Women’s Outstanding Women recognition. A lyricist and composer of note, Houser Spencer is responsible for penning beloved and much-covered songs in the country gospel & bluegrass pantheon during the fifties. There are a few reasons for Houser Spencer’s relative obscurity: one, she was a creative person who did her most enduring work away from the spotlight. In addition, she was generally not at centerstage when performing, mostly functioning as a rhythm guitarist and/or harmony vocalist. Two, she was a mother with three children, a role which inherently constrained her work as an artist--as it usually does for women creatives. But motherhood certainly didn’t stop her art. She was a professional with a publishing contract to Central Songs and wrote songs that fans of classic country music treasure, notably, “Wait a Little Longer, Please Jesus,” “My Baby’s Gone,” and “River of Jordan.” Born in Heavener, Oklahoma, on June 3, 1922, Houser Spencer was one of six children born into a church family whose father was an Assembly of God minister. As did her siblings, she learned how to sing and play instruments from an early age. A literary child, she kept a notebook in which she recorded her observations and thoughts--these words became the poetry and lyrics which would eventually be crafted into songs we know today. Her family, as did others of the era, came to California after the Depression. After a while, Houser Spencer married and settled in Modesto, where she worked in canneries and ran a snack bar while raising her three children, Charlotte, Gerrie, and Doug, all the while continuing to write songs. During this time, Houser Spencer either performed or collaborated with Chester Smith, Merle Haggard, Rose Maddox, Ray Park (of pioneering bluegrass duo Vern & Ray), and many more. Smith was instrumental in bringing Houser Smith to Hollywood to sign with Central Songs, and they had a partnership that included Houser Spencer playing guitar in Smith’s band and singing harmony and duet. Later in life, with her second husband, she founded and operated Spencer’s Driving School. She retired in 1981 to Mariposa County, where she continued to play music. Family gatherings always included Houser Spencer picking up her trusty Martin guitar and leading family singalongs. She continued to write songs. She was on a first-name basis with Merle Haggard, Porter Wagoner, Minnie Pearl, as well as other country stars of the fifties who clearly recognized her as an irrefutable songwriting talent. Yet looking up Hazel Houser Spencer does not yield much beyond her status as a Modesto housewife who was incidentally a hitmaker for some of the most popular country artists of the fifties. A workingclass mother whose beautiful lyrics made an impact on people across the nation, Hazel Houser Spencer is a Central Valley literary ancestor who reminds us of the richness of the art that comes from our soil--and its influence on a much wider stage.

Carol Whiteside Carol Whiteside found a new home in 1973 Modesto when her Judge husband John Whiteside moved to serve at the court. She was a great networker, gourmet chef and would run for office and serve on the Modesto City School Board in 1983. Carol was innovative and had a good vision for what our are could be and was elected Mayor in 1987 focusing on smart growth, efficient government and getting things done. Her knowledge of the area and people landed her a position with Pete Wilson’s administration in the resources agency and later created the Great Valley Center to bring much need attention and study to the Central Valley. She just recently passed away leaving a long line of people she mentored and inspired. This month, the third woman started her term as mayor.

There are so many more. There are amazing professionals, leaders, moms that will all make their mark in Modesto history. This is a long story and our plan is to showcase many more over the months and years. Please add to our story at: info@modestoview.com

Shop Local Support the Arts By Middagh Goodwin Modesto’s population is approximately 204,933, it is the 18th largest city in California. What does that ultimately mean? There are a lot of people living in and around Modesto. Statistics show that about 68% of what is spent locally is reinvested in the community. Remember that number. Independent businesses return back into the community more than three times as much money per dollar in sales than chain competitors. How can we grow our local economy? What I am suggesting is if we all just switch our spending, even just a little it will add up to a huge impact. Even $5, the price of a cup of coffee at one of those corporate cafes. That minute amount adds up in a very large way. We want to make sure all our favorite places are still serving us when we are free to roam. We are going to want to go out and eat, get our hair done or have a spa day. Not everyone that lives in Modesto is in a position to spend even $20 while we wait until things get back to “Normal”. Let us remove the very

young and old and the unemployed that is somewhere around 40% of Modesto’s population. Let us for good measure and to make it easier round that number up to 50%. 50% is 102,466. That is still a large number of people. If each of us spends just an average of $20 on gift certificates or deliveries from local Cafes and Restaurants, Hair Salons, Spas and other locally owned businesses that amount adds up to $2,049,330 in just a month. In a year’s time, that comes to $24,591,960. What a generous amount of money to give to invest in our Community, in our friends and neighbors. While we wait I encourage you to buy gift certificates to places that host Live Music and stage performances these make fantastic gifts too. Become a friend of the Gallo or the State Theatre. Pledge to go out and support your Community when things get back to normal but for now, order out and tip well. Together we can make an incredible impact!

S E T D O O M O G Tony Trevino and the Pendletons Something wonderful in the local music world has happened. As we talk about Women’s History Month, one of Modesto’s adopted greats is Rose Maddox. In 1938, she and her brothers, Fred and Clay, began a band on KTRB that would be hillbilly boogie, later with her family, pioneering Rockabilly. and over a decade ago, one of our modern pioneering bands was the Pendletons. Rockabilly is Modesto’s sound and over the last few years, we have had a hard time, but now it is back with Tony T and the Pendletons. This hard driving, fun, danceable music is now coming out of 10th St. We did a cover for ModestoView a few years back, featuring a Rockin 10th St with guitarist Tony T. rockin’ pretty close to where Trevino Barber Shop is today. This new version features Stephan Meeker on bass, Ben Stroughter on drums and Texas Steve on Rhythm acoustic and some of the Wild Records musicians. They are playing a cool mix of electric Rockabilly, voodoo blues and Proto punk sound with some cool 60s psych like improv to get some cool vibes going. UNPLUGGED VIEW Rip Tide

By Aaron Rowan

One weekend last month, a murder mystery game played out across Modesto - a detective adventure designed by CluedUpp Games and inspired by the infamous Jack The Ripper case. I missed out on that party, but that’s alright because I’ve gotten to enjoy plenty of entertainment provided by Modesto’s real Jack the Ripper. His name is Jack Douglass. ‘Ripper’ just happens to be an Australian slang word that means ‘awesome.’ I learned that from Margot Robbie not long ago. She’s got her own Youtube video about fanciful expressions from Down Under and the meanings behind them. It’s even more fun than that one movie scene where she explains the subprime mortgage crisis from the comfort of her bubble bath. What better word to describe a teen piano wizard such as Jack? Jack’s journey began when hearing a video game tune inspired him to get serious about playing his keyboard. He’s largely self-taught, through watching online videos, but his creativity behind the ivories has earned him multiple talent show awards. In 2018, Jack took top prize at the Riverbank’s Got Talent contest, then went on to earn the Paul Tischer Classical Music Scholarship that summer at the Valley Talent Project with his rendition of ‘Tetris Ragtime.’ In August 2019, he was back on the Gallo Center stage for VTP with ‘Medley In C,’ an arrangement of pieces by Beethoven, Bach and Chopin, which netted him the Instrumental Talent prize. A few months after the 2019 Valley Talent, Jack headlined my own Young Artist series at the Dragonfly art gallery on J St. For this program he brought in a special guest, fellow VTP winner Bennett Vickery (special talent award.) Bennett is a beatboxer, and he and Jack delivered a unique set of FOLLOW US:

tunes ranging from video game music to ‘In The Hall Of The Mountain King.’ This ended up being one of my most wellreceived showcases of that year. The last time I saw Jack, he had expanded into a different role – that of Mr Brooke in Gallo Center Repertory Company’s Little Women’ in early March 2020, right on the brink of the great culture collapse. I’ll reel him back in as the music starts to get going again at the Dragonfly Art For Life gallery, which I expect to happen by spring or summer. Until then, you might find Jack doing his ivory-tickling sometime at Columbia’s historic Jack Douglass Saloon (no relation...I don’t think...) Next month, we’ll delve into the exploits of someone I consider one of the most fascinating Modesto creatives I know, plus some thrilling news of a project they’ve been working hard on. See you then, and hope to see you out supporting live music again soon. Intimate performances. Infinite playlist. MODESTO UNPLUGGED. www. modestounplugged.com

Kamala Harris becomes the first woman Vice President in history. A descendant of slaves presiding as second in command in a house built by slaves-what a time to be a woman! On the heels of a year that sought to discount and destroy the achievements, freedoms, prosperity and powers of women, here we are in a new era of gender liberty. March 8 is International Women’s Day. We all have heroines in our lives who paved the way for us to create dreams and live full lives. I’m not only grateful to my own family’s founding Mothers, I’m so proud of all those women in music from this community who came before me. We MUST start here and now and increase visibility for local women creatives. The local scene is remiss in its willingness to give equal opportunities. Raising up a few women on a pedestal only puts women in competition with one another, and also narrows the range and richness of the music offered. I was just a girl when Shelly Streeter found success in the genre of Country music. Shelly’s aspirations to succeed at the highest level were met during a time where the inequality was encoded in the music itself, she would hear “mansplained” on more than one occasion that although her musical gift was undeniable, there was only enough room on Country radio for a handful of “little blonde gal singers”. The Country music industry is more focused on profit-making than diversity creating. An artist with the chops to share the stage with some of the greatest stars of the Grand Ole Opry including-Haggard and Jones, Tim McGraw, Waylon Jennings, and Kenny Chesney found an industry that only played female artists in off hours and had a policy of never playing lady singers’ songs back to back. In 1997 she had a successful appearance on Prime Time Country, the premiere nightly showcase for TNN formatted similarly to The Tonight Show. The appearance was part of her press junket for White Lace Promises, her video on rotation on CMT. Earning a multitude of awards including Female Vocalist of the Year from the California Country Music Association and first-ever Modesto Area Music Award for Best Americana. Shelly resides in Modesto and has hung up her microphone on a full-time basis but still enjoys a show with the all-girl group The Sensations for special events. Shelly says to look in the near future for The Shelly Streeter Band to play a show in a theater

near you. “Rough ridden gritty”, distinctive, earthy and definitive are just some of the words that have been used by music critics, Hollywood elite, radio disc jockeys and fellow singer-songwriters. Who is all the buzz about? Sandy Rogers. Sandy says she really didn’t start writing songs until the age of 25. The song “You Lied Your Way Into My Heart, Honey” was one of those early tunes and is her favorite, written in Davis in the mid ’70s. Influenced by Dolly, Hank, Jerry Lee, Smokey and Irma Thomas, Sandy listens intently to what’s inside of her own voice to convey themes of high-intensity love, devotion and sorrow from an almost outlaw Country point of reference. In 1986, her brother, American actor, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, author, screenwriter and Director, Sam Shepherd called and said he would like for her to write some songs for a movie version of his play, Fool For Love. He played a tape of some of her early compositions for Director, Robert Altman. The director was more than pleased and absolutely loved her roots-inspired stuff. Sandy wrote three tunes-“Let’s Ride”, “Comes and Goes” and “Elaine May”, and sent them to her Brother within 72 hours. Sam presented Sandy’s offering to Altman and he adored them. Robert Altman was eager to have her

compose songs for the entire soundtrack and requested more of her work. Sandy completed the tracks at The Record Plant under the production of Jim Gaines. Sandy has always had great and encouraging experiences working in a predominantly male scene at a time when very few women were leaders in the music industry. In 1992, the tracks, “Fool For Love” and “Train Fare to Memphis” appeared in the background of Quentin Tarantino’s first motion picture, Reservoir Dogs. In this iconic American crime film-“Fool For Love” became the theme associated with every scene with Mr Orange/Freddy an undercover cop posing as a robber who is an avid Country music fan. These days Sandy writes more prose and poetry but still boasts about how much she loves recording in the studio and if you’re fortunate, you may have caught her performing at Sheatherfest and at the Knights Ferry Saloon. She’s promised me a collaboration on a mini-tour and I’m holding her to it. To purchase music and to learn more info visit rattlerecords.com and https://youtu.be/hdhSEp8eLb8 to hear the “Fool For Love” motion picture soundtrack. Patty Hughes says she found her voice when she was 8 years old, also when she wrote her first song, a song about love. While at John Sutter elementary school

she sang in the choir during assembly programs and also belted out “I Am Woman”-the feminist awareness anthem. This moment in time caused her to start the Equal Rights Group For Women while in the Sixth grade. A life of service and her path of continuing to raise awareness against bias was set into motion. Patty’s Music was a constant throughout her life as she sang in garage bands and performed musical theater and eventually took the leap to Los Angeles where she wrote original music. In 1987 she recorded “Stranger In A Strange Land” for the Cannes I’Edicion Musicale, the trade show that has been the leading international business event since 1967. A tour with South American guitar virtuoso, Eric Mena would follow in Munich, Germany. In recent years, Patty has been a featured performer at the Modesto Unplugged annual end-of-year ELEGY concerts, which pay homage to those artists lost during the year. A decade ago Patty started a political women’s club, the first of its kind in our area in support of women’s rights and championing the election of women. A focus on basic human rights such as healthcare reform were the theme of the first of many rallies and protests to innovate for a higher goal of a gender-equal world. In 2018, Patty and her group would soon bring the iconic American Labor Leader and civil rights Activist Delores Huerta, who with Cesar Chavez co-founded the United Farm Workers to Modesto to receive the Inspire award. Spearheading the Women’s March Modesto, a facet of the largest movement in our nation’s history has been by far the greatest vehicle for connecting this community to forge positive change for women. Throughout all of her career music has been interwoven as the link that inspires, engages and creates the soundtrack for each social activity. Patty has hosted sing-a-longs during meetings, rallies, protests and presentations enthusiastically. A voice for change, indeed. As we slowly reopen and the desire for live music remains on the list of what we miss greatly, let’s hope that those booking artists will do so with equity. I’d love to see 50/50 billing at venues. I’d love to hear my male peers refuse jobs unless equal opportunities are given to local women musicians. I’d love to produce a musical experience where all the front people are women, in celebration of women, (much like the Women of the MAMAs tribute to Woodstock performance at the 2019 MAMA Awards) and I’d love to see the pay scale for ALL musicians raise up to regional standards. In the meantime, be safe, stay sane and I’ll continue to demand a seat at the table by bringing my own chair. Peace.

The museum will take you back in time, to the days when we were “Draggin’ 10th”. This will be a true experience with a real diner, a reimagined 1962 10th St with shops & businesses and even a tribute to Modesto Radio History We need you! We need your help to build this dream so we can share our Modesto story with people from all over the world who will visit. The will know that Modesto USA is a cool city with a real authentic story. Here is how you can help and get involved. The end of the year is coming. If you are considering a tax deductible donation before the end of the year, the Graffiti USA Museum would be a great place to do it. Your donation will help us build this museum and build civic pride and celebrate our classic car history. You can also donate your car, stocks, time and even donate services. You can make a permanent contribution too. There are 30 “business storefronts” on our re-imagination lf a 1962 10th Street. There are only 27 spaces left and we will have some models built soon so you can see what we are doing. Please consider funding one of these storefronts that start at $25,000. Well folks this is the new norm with things opening and improving! The promise of spring gives me optimism for brighter days ahead, “the smile’s returning to there faces…here comes the sun, here comes the sun.” This song played in hospitals when someone with a Covid infection has survived and able to go home. We now have 50,000 positive cases with a low mortality rate so now is the time to get your vaccination! Do this for yourself, do this to protect others, and do it so there is not a reservoir for the infection that the virus can turn into a new strain. 2020 we were supposed to wear masks, 2021 we are still wearing masks because we did not do the right thing the first time around. Much love for you out there that are doing the right thing wearing masks and social distancing. In the meantime, keep going and stay healthy and keep things rolling! There are a lot of us struggling right now, emotionally, physically, and spiritually so please reach out and lend a hand to those who need it. We also need to support our local business and economy, so it is still there as things improve. Next month we will conspire to get people out to our local businesses, restaurants to keep them healthy. If we have no venues when things get better you will see me out on south 9th street busking with my

guitar singing the Blues. So please continue to support our local venues. My friend Dylan Soto drummer for many bands in the area is doing a Fundraiser for his long time childhood friend Quincy. She has recently developed Leukemia and is in the hospital for treatment. We will be doing an event outside at Café Urbano Sunday, March 14th from 3 to 7 pm to raise funds for her. We encourage all to come and support live music and Quincey, she also has a GoFundMe page for those who want to help. Blue Monday Party out of Lockdown at Café Urbano Monday, March 8th with special guest Barry Finnerty guitarist form Miles Davis Band and many others. Also in March, the Chris Cain Band returns Sunday, March 21st for a 4 PM show outside. Urbano also has DJ events Salsa, cumbia on Taco Tuesdays, also Thursday through Sunday for DJ Latin dancing with great food and a full bar.

Strength Train Yourself Into Happiness. By Efren Martinez

Like many of you, I too have not been totally immune from this pandemic. Yes, some days are better than others. The biggest challenge I’ve experienced is not being able to DJ and entertain you. At times it can be quite heavy on my mind with thoughts of being forgotten about. A feeling of no need for us, in my industry, right now. I’m sure many in our business, like musicians, dancers, photographers, event planners and sound engineers, have also had similar feelings. Yes, our entertainment industry has been shut down now for a year because of Covid 19 restrictions and for good measure. As a God-loving man, I wouldn’t want my business to be tied to a super spreader event or even worse have it on my conscience that I was part of the death of anyone because I chose profits over people. Thoughts like this have made it a bit harder to keep my mind healthy and happy on certain days. I long to go back to work and DJ/Entertain you at your Schools’ dances, Weddings, Fitness Events and even at our city’s fantastic 4th of July parade. I have worked to find an amazing way to help overcome these uncertain sad feelings. As many of you know I am a Tri-athlete. I love to swim, bike and run! Training outdoors has been exceptionally healthy for my soul. I truly recommended it. The sunshine and the fresh air have been a great way to break up my days of unemployment. Honestly, I realized I am training nearly 24 hours a week to get faster with no race insight just didn’t make sense anymore. It’s a sure bet that Triathlons won’t be coming back perhaps until next year so I decided to flip the switch and start strength training even more. A lot more. Soon after not only did I start to see my

body change from a super slender runner type to a 32-inch waist and a 42-inch chest “V-Shape.” I also started to see huge improvements in my mental well being and sleep. Curious about knowing why I did some research and found that when we strength train a chemical reaction develops in our brain called Serotonin. Serotonin is an important brain chemical that improves mood, as well as improves your sleep/wake cycle. This is also why many of the prescription medications that are prescribed for depression help increase the Serotonin levels in the brain. As many of my friends know I am an Anti-Meds kind of person and prefer to always go natural first. This “Strength Training” thing was really starting to become my new thing. Furthermore, it also provides a certain level of dopamine in my brain, although not nearly as much, as what a runner would experience as a “runners high.” Just the same I’ll take it all. I still keep up with my outdoor fitness but increasing my strength training has not only improved my mood it has given me that Super Hero kind of body. Friends, you can achieve this too even if you don’t have a gym to go to or free weights right now. I’d recommend using your own body’s weight along with gravity for strength training. Some of the 3 simplest exercises you can do are pushups, sit-ups and pull-ups. Start off slow with these strength training exercises. As you go gradually move up to lifting dumbbells, then motorcycles, followed by cars and then by lifting houses. Giggles! Pardon my humor it must be the Serotonin flowing through my brain because I just finished strength training myself into happiness. Cheers to your health, mentally and physically! BARGAIN VIEW March Forward

March forward into Spring! The weather is warming and Ms M finds herself more and more outside in the garden enjoying the slow process of watching her flowers bloom. March is a great month for starting to get outdoors again safely and enjoy the warmer temperatures. Here are a few ideas that will let you save a few dollars whether you decide to step outside or stay inside. Positive speaking is a powerful tool and MJC West Campus hosts another virtual session of their 2020-2021 Positive People Speaker Series on March 4th with Dr Amelia Herrera, a teacher at Davis High School, She has a background in diversity from working with students of various backgrounds for the last fourteen years. On March 17th, at 7 pm the Gallo Arts Center gives you the chance to meet two filmmakers renowned for their ability to capture some of the most extreme feats of adventure and the world’s most secluded and unwelcoming places. Bryan Smith’s, stories of adventure come to the screen from deep canyons in the South Pacific’s to Niagra Falls frozen waters. Keith Ladzinski brings the impossible to the screen with his adventures, which include chasing tornadoes, hanging from enormous natural arches, to swimming with the alligators. Tickets for this event are $15 per household

In honor of Saint Patrick’s day, I am excited to share some green-related activities that you can take part in this month. 1. The valley’s weather has been absolutely gorgeous recently. These upcoming months are perfect to bike along the Tuolumne River and Dry Creek trails as well as the Virginia Corridor that have begun to flourish as spring approaches. If you’re with your furry friend, you can take a quick detour off the corridor to the Modesto Dog Park on Morris Avenue. The park has a section for small dogs and another for larger dogs, drinking fountains, and picnic benches—a perfect weekend activity. 2. Whether your favorite Girl Scout cookie be the chocolate-coated thin mints, classic shortbreads, or, my personal favorite, lemonades, there truly is nothing better than cookie season. Well… that season is here! Support a local Girl Scout troop by purchasing a box of cookies because 100 percent of the profits will stay local. The money that troops earn will then be used to improve the community or they will donate it to a worthy cause. 3. This month I want to encourage you to spend your money locally. I have found

By Sofia Johnson

that small businesses, such as Mobaak Aromatherapy Shoppe in Roseburg Square, are very rewarding to buy from. Mobaak’s natural candles, oils, soaps, and more also make the perfect gift for a loved one or just to treat yourself. Other local businesses that I enjoy include Preservation Coffee & Tea, Beads of Contentment, and Rodin Ranch Farmers Market. 4. Of course, my favorite green topic to mention is environmental. While appreciating and using Modesto’s many amenities, let us keep them beautiful as well. Plogging, a combination of picking up litter and jogging is among my favorite environmental trends. You may also be inspired, like myself, to start your own garden this spring and cook meals with the food that you grow. This prevents unnecessary plastic wrapping on vegetables, saves fuel, and creates a fun process of seeing your food start from a seed and make its way to your dinner plate. 5. If you are looking for a more crafty activity, I suggest making leprechaun traps. My sister and I once turned an old girl scout cookie box into a leprechaun nightclub in an attempt to make them lose track of time. Another year, we flipped a box upside-down, propped one side up with a stick and lured them in with gold coins. Now, I may be a very experienced leprechaun-trapper, but anyone can make one of these traps! All you need is an old cardboard box, any craft supplies, and a little creativity. I hope this list gave you a variety of activities to do this month. Although it may seem difficult to remain occupied in these monotonous days, stay busy, stay enthusiastic, and stay safe Modesto!

Power Or Love?

Protect your car, home and wallet.

By Mary Layton

Recently I was talking to an old friend who lives in Germany. She was sharing that she was dealing with an illness and I was telling her about a fender bender. I was quite upset about the small damage on my car. What is it that makes you so strong in the midst of dealing with a serious illness? I wanted to know. Here is what she told me. “There are two forces in the world, there is Power which often brings destruction and darkness. And there is Love. I decided to choose Love.” Ever since this conversation I have been pondering about these two major forces, Power and Love. I realize that I am not nearly as loving as I like to be. Impatience can get the best of me and makes me critical and numb to what may be going on with others. Wanting to feel powerful I act and react too fast for my own good. This causes accidents and injuries. It may be better to accept my powerlessness. Actual power is an illusion. The facade of power can make us lose our way and connection to ourselves and other people. Choosing the path of love on the other

hand, is a willingness to go the extra mile. To sacrifice, to be tolerant, to be honest and to show understanding even for adversaries, to compromise. To stop going to war with myself because of a mistake I made, to forgive myself. In a recent interview with Ziggy Marley in Extraordinary Health Magazine Ziggy says, “I am so confident …that if love gets a chance, it will transform the community and the world into a more prosperous place, because we are capable of love.” What will I chose today? Nowadays, as we navigate an increasingly complicated and challenging world, I find myself frustrated and irritable at times. I am sure I am not the only one. Staying home a lot more than before I can’t get away from the uncomfortable truth that much of my anguish lies in my own attitude. I cannot expect harmony and love to be handed to me. To quote Ralph Waldo Emerson : “Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not.” Here’s to Love!
