As a Murphy, March is one of my favorite months. The hills are green, we have just come off of a beautiful Almond Blossom season and we start counting down the days to the St. Patrick’s Day, that just may pick up where we left off exactly 2 years ago when the door slammed shut on the entire world. Wow. Those were heavy times. Some of the weight may be lifted off. It seems like it may be for real this time as the main risks of the pandemic now lay with the unvaccinated. So I guess this is where we go down two paths now. I am vaccinated, boosted, I’ve had COVID twice and all of my family has now had it and we are all vaccinated. We did our part. So away we go and let’s see how it shakes out. Is the new normal? Probably so. But whatever place you are in, let’s continue to be careful. But here we are, looking at the brink of war and there is really no other answer than to stand with democracy. Even more reason for us to make sure that we are doing all we can here in our hometown to make things better for all of us. A huge thank you needs to go out to our health care professionals. They have been on the front line, fighting hard when supplies were tight, making us well, comforting those in pain and being the only person in the room during quarantine. The have

been through it all and they deserve a huge thank you for getting us all through this. We celebrate them this month as they all worked together and help slam dunk COVID for our own version of March Madness. Yes, we know there is a big college championship coming, but these are our local champions. We need to celebrate our health care workers, our teachers and our front line people like we do the sports superstars and that’s why featured them on the cover. I was at a conference last month where the theme was “Rethink Everything”. I think that this is exactly how we need to look at things and let’s focus on what we can do to make our community better. What will each of us to do create something new? New concert? New art show? New job? New restaurant? Heck, Hank and Ashley of Food Fix are opening a new downtown bakery and Robert Wilson purchased the legendary Fast Eddie’s MOAB so you can see, there is much to do and you, the ModestoView readers are the ones that will do it. I know I can count on you. So let’s get on with it and get our green on. I for one plan on celebrating on St Patrick’s Day and will be there tipping my Murphy’s at P. Wexford’s and eating my Corned Beef and Cabbage, picking up where we left off

two years ago. For me, the best feeling is that the music is back, and it’s time to get the people who learned how to play during the pandemic out on stage and encourage our community to keep music in schools and make music a part of our community fabric and we celebrate our music madness this month and feature music teachers. As we come back, we need to celebrate each other, and lift each other up. It is not about me or you, it is about how we all grow and get better. We have to do this together. Let’s rethink everything, stay strong, support those in need and be a good example of how we should do this. Thank you to our local businesses that support the mission of ModestoView to “Serve Civic Pride Daily”. With gratitude, Chris Murphy, Publisher and Founder- ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com

We are so very grateful for all they have done for us. They are the true March Madness champions!

It was two years ago, St. Patrick’s Day that the door slammed shut on life as we knew it. As the 17th approached the pandemic ramped up and the doors chased us down the hallway like the opening scene of Get Smart. Twisted Pig

This is where I will spend the day on St. Patrick’s Day. Bangers & Mash, Corned Beef and Cabbage and an amazing stout beer, hopefully Murphy’s. P. Wexford’s feels like home on this day. The music, the bagpipes, the Car Bombs, and the fun celebrating. One of the best things about P Wex is that it serves the Irish specialties all year long and live music is presented all year long, so the Irish celebration on the actual day is great. You can enjoy the party outside and inside with music in both places. Tix for the day are $10 and feature Gotcha Covered, Jason Gulley and DJ Tease.

After two years of no gathering, the LOVE MODESTO/ Love Stanislaus event will be back in downtown Modesto. Even though we have been limited over the last two years, Love Modesto projects still happened and thousands of people got together and took a day to make Modesto better. This year it will be bigger than ever. No matter who you are or where you live, there is something you (your family, friends, business, congregation, group, etc.) can do to Love Modesto! Most of these projects are done by noon, so it is really possible. ModestoView will be supporting the Dry Creek Clean Up and the LaLoma Native Garden. View all projects and sign up for a project soon (before the project you want is full)! Share Love Modesto with all those you know and invite them to Love Modesto April 23 and see you downtown at 8 am. www.LoveModesto.com

WALK-A-MILE

We have no use for domestic abuse.

This is something that we all must stand up against and prevent sexual abuse of any kind. We must support those that protect our most vulnerable in our community. The Haven Women’s Center does work that is literally life saving in the most dangerous times. Women need a safe place to get away and feel safe. This is why Sierra Pacific and ModestoView are Walking a Mile in their shoes to raise money for Haven. We hope that you will dig down deep and support our team. We will be walking Saturday morning, April 23. Please make a quick contribution so we can make a difference. Plus, I am sure you get a good laugh watching men struggle to do what women do all day long. Tell a friend too. Some are like miniature houses Complete with windows and peaked roofs; Others are simpler, but can be elegant With painted or decorative whimsy, But all have two features in common— Theirs owners must be neighborly folks Because they plant for others to share, And when you open those tiny doors, Surprising journeys of books are there. How many free libraries thrive in Modesto? Last summer, there were more than sixty; Last I looked, over eighty, and by the last Line you read here, maybe one more Will be posted and stocked, just for you. Perhaps Judith Krantz is on Judith Lane, Or a used, but useful cookbook on Olive Ave., A Wild West novel on a street called Stetson, Perhaps an Arctic adventure down on Frost Way, A hiker’s manual in Canyon Oak Drive, A spiritual volume on Aspirations Court, A tale of wild horses on Palomino Way— Surely, by now you are catching my drift Of mixing random names and actual places From the Free Little Library playlist. I can’t guarantee you title or author, But that’s what your own search is for. Before browsing their shelves, check your own. Which books, once read, are filling space That can take the walk from your hands Into those cozy public nooks? As a book is a ray of knowledge and delight, Why can’t we make new Reading Rainbows By the light of the “take one, leave one” creed? Ride, or better yet, take a leisurely stroll To a little free library near your street. Be curious, generous, give and get something— That is what a neighborhood’s all about!

MAMA VIEW

W E I V BREW Erin Go Bragh!

There’s no better St. Patrick’s Day parties in the Central Valley, then the one at the MAMA winning P. Wexford’s Pub on McHenry, Modesto! A great little Irish pub with an impressive array of 25 taps, serves the biggest variety of Irish beers in March. If you like the traditional green beer, yes, they have it, but if you are craving some good Irish beers, come get your Murphy’s, Guinness, Harp, or Smithwick’s. Ireland beers are coming right here direct to you for your St. Patrick’s Day pleasure! The party starts in the parking lot at noon on March 17th, and goes all night. Tickets are $20 this year. Rain or shine, this event is where you can celebrate no matter what your age (well, as long as you’re over 21 that is) or your ethnicity. Everyone is Irish on March 17th! Although they serve corned beef and cabbage year-round, it’s the most popular dish at this event. (Or try the Irish Melt sandwich! Yum!) Other menu items available will be Shepherd’s Pie and bangers and mash. Music will be played all day by local musicians. This year’s music line up will be Jason Gully, Gotcha Covered & DJ Tease. Practice your corn hole because friendly tournaments will take place outside. Get your game on!

P. Wexford’s is our local “Cheers!”, and the pub regulars gladly open their hearts to one and all for this event, sharing their friendly pub with anyone who walks in. Fun fact: Its name comes from the time Patrick Johnson threw a dart at a map of Ireland, and the dart stuck in the county of Wexford. It doesn’t have the same ring as “Cheers!” but the Irish say “Slainte!” anyway, so get practicing so you’ll fit in! (It’s pronounced “slawn-cha”.) Come out wearing your green for a luckily good time! As they say, “Best while you have it, use your breath, there is no drinking after death!”

It is March and we are celebrating Music in Education in the BigView. I would encourage anyone to enroll in a music class, either in school or at one of the great local schools of Rock. There is Valley Music Institute here in downtown Modesto that Darin Morris has been running since 2009. Not only do you learn your instrument of choice, but you are also encouraged to participate in a band with several performances each session. GKMusic is run by Gordon Kennedy and is located in Manteca much like VMI they offer classes for any age but really excel at teaching young students. GK host several performances throughout the year and many of their bands have gone on to perform at some of the Central Valleys’ best venues. Additionally, did you know that we have a school that teaches you how to be a live sound and recording engineer? That’s right Modesto Sound does just that and is located just off of Yosemite in the La Loma district. Check them out and we will see you rocking on a stage soon. Round 1 of the State Theatre Battle of the Bands is over and the finals will take place on March 13th at 7 pm. 8 bands will compete for a grand prize of $2500 and an Audience Choice prize of $1500 performing 2 songs each including the original they performed for

Round 1. 5 bands were chosen by fans voting throughout the month of February with 3 more chosen by the panel of judges. VMI will be providing the backline for all the bands to keep things moving smoothly. Tickets are $10 each and can purchase from the box office or at www.thestate.org March is Women’s History Month and I want to encourage you to go support as many female musicians as you can. Horizon Point is playing March 4th at Harvest Moon and the 26th at Pursausion Brewing among others. Ava Grace Trio are at Harvest Moon on the 18th and at 5 Eye Brewing in Ceres on the 18th to name a few. March 25th catch Sweet Mama Rachel Trio out at the House of Beef in Oakdale. If you like country Western Bound is playing at Rivet’s on March 11th and 18th, also the Udder Place in Turlock on March 25th. Us4Love can be heard on March 12th at P Wexford’s and on March 19th at Rivet’s. Tea Noelle has one show scheduled at Contentment Brewing on March 11th. Bring a friend and check out one or all of these fantastic performers. Go out and support live music when you can and take a moment to like and share all your favorite local bands and venues on social media even that little bit helps a lot.

SWEET VIEW Boho Buttercream Desserts! Desserts! Desserts!

I was first introduced to Boho Buttercream via their vegan donuts on a Friday morning at Culture Coffee Bar. I was skeptical, but tried one of each flavor: Strawberry and Chocolate. I’m not vegan myself, but there are several vegans in my social bubble, so I thought I would do some research for them. The donuts were so delectable! The strawberry once was so heavenly, just like eating a strawberry off the vine. Since I had never heard of Boho before and also never heard of a vegan donut available in the area, I assumed Boho must’ve been delivered from the Sacramento area or maybe even from the East Bay, and never tried to find them locally. Big mistake on my part. I was at the Dragonfly Tea Room recently (eating a macaron, no surprise there), and the owner Judy Robinson told me that her macarons are made by Boho Buttercream. I was shocked! Wait a minute! “The same Boho that makes vegan donuts?” I asked. “Oh yeah!” Judy said. “Chef Anya is here every Sunday to make her cakes and cookies and her yummy macarons!” Oh boy. You would think I was just told, “Two dozen puppies have just been delivered to your backyard!” because THAT is how happy I was! I ordered a dozen macarons via bohobuttercream.com the next day, for pick up the following Sunday. It was a box of half milk chocolate and half cookies & cream. I had intended them for the following Saturday to share with a friend over lunch, but I would be lying if I told you they made it that long. They didn’t. My husband and I consumed 7 of them that very night, and I put 5 in the freezer solely for my friend. I should’ve waited for my friend, but I think she will understand my self-control dilemma once she’s tried them herself! Delicate and crispy on the outside, moist and creamy on the inside. The perfect amount of frosting; each tiny morsel bursting with flavor. The cookies & cream was 100% without hesitation, the best macaron I have ever eaten. And I have eaten a lot of macarons in my life-a dozen or so right in the heart of Paris. These rival FOLLOW US:

even the macarons I ate IN PARIS! I was honored to meet owner Chef Anya Heidenberg while I picked up the cutest box of macarons from her. Chef Anya started baking as a child, who was a natural in the kitchen. Her first job was at Three Dog Bakery, a doggie bakery in Pasadena, ringing up customers. It wasn’t long before she was using her talents making yummy treats for furry friends like pupcakes and biscuits. Using this experience she moved to another bakery and was inadvertently thrown into making wedding cakes during a busy weekend. She was hooked. Baking and designing was filling her heart to overflowing; she loved it! She went to college while baking and got a dual degree in American Sign Language and Graphic Arts. She left professional baking behind for a while to teach ASL. Life threw her a curveball, though. Her two year old daughter was diagnosed with cancer. The demanding job had to go to allow her to take care of her daughter. Baking slowly returned to her life, as a result of her posting beautiful birthday cakes and cupcakes she made for her family online and her friends ordering cakes just like them. The freedom baking gave her was just what she needed. Not only did it allow her time to spend with her family, it was giving her heart joy to be back at creating art. Joy she needed during a tumultuous chapter of her life. She began wondering if she could turn it into a business and meet several needs at once: a flexible schedule for appointments and much needed family time, income, intrinsic fulfillment, and lastly: providing the Central Valley with gluten-free and vegan treats of which there was a desperate need. Chef Anyaand many other Modestans-live with Celiac’s disease. And they deserve to treat themselves to yummy sweets the same as everyone else. But it was hard to do without baking everything at home yourself. Anya to the rescue! She got her start in Greens on Tenth, and has recently moved to Dragonfly Tea Room. Everything is made on separate GF & vegan equipment, and she offers quite an array of items to satiate any craving you might have. She sees every cake as a blank canvas, to be made into gorgeous edible art. This is evident in even her smallest creation, her

Take it from me, who has now eaten her donuts, macarons and an ooey-gooey snickerdoodle that found its way into my belly on Sunday, and I can attest that you won’t go back to traditional desserts. Those snickerdoodle cookies will convert you if nothing else. Just do it. Don’t look back. And I would hate to leave you on a cliffhanger: her daughter is doing well these days, but this will be a life-long battle. So remember, every time you buy a dozen cookies, or a few loaves of bread, or a cake for your next party, you are helping a local family to be flexible with their time and support their kids. Everything she makes is tenderly done with love of her family, her art and her community. Appreciation

is the icing and garnish, because none of this could happen if she didn’t have loyal customers. You can get her treats at Dragonfly throughout the week, and her donuts are at Culture Coffee Bar on Fridays. For special orders like wedding cakes, set an appointment on the website. She offers a rotating monthly “favorites” menu, which is where you can order things like macarons, cookies, donuts, and breads. You can grab pre-made cookies on Sunday or you can also order dough to take home and bake at your leisure.

Accomplishments should be celebrated while we are alive and breathing. For that reason, I invite each of you to join me as I acknowledge Dottie Wright for her servitude and the extraordinary love she shows for the cheerleaders and students she works with, in Stanislaus County and beyond. Her loyalty to them is simply immeasurable. March is National Cheerleading Safety Month and what better time to celebrate a positive woman who for many years, has been a staple in our community? Dottie Wright has a cheer coaching career that spans over three decades. She began her love affair with cheerleading while attending De Anza College in Cupertino California. She started coaching for JAMZ Cheer and Dance, 34 years ago and for 34 years in a row, at least one of her cheer teams has taken home 1st Place in the competitive sport. This year’s competition, however, holds a special place in Dottie’s heart, because on January 24, 2022, in front of thousands of people, she was honored and presented with the well-deserved, Suzy Barna Lifetime Achievement Award at the JAMZ Nationals Cheer Competition! Dottie has always loved working with kids at every grade level. In addition, to cheer coaching, she

is Campus Supervisor at Davis High School and is a Cheer Coach at Modesto High. As if these two jobs don’t keep her busy enough, Dottie also works at Modesto’s Dollar General and has done so for the last 6 years. She is not only a coach, but she is a big financial backer for the students who have parents that cannot afford to purchase the uniforms necessary for their children to begin on the team. Dottie does what she can to ensure that no child is turned away. She finds sponsors to donate and specifically credits Karen Gallo for the contributions she has made for the cheerleaders over time. Dottie is a mother of five herself. Still, having her own children does not limit the love she bestows upon the children she has worked with in the past, through to the present. Samantha Nolasco is Dottie’s best friend of over 22 years. She had this to say about her friend, “Dottie is a dedicated, caring, and strong woman who would literally give her last dollar to anyone in need. She makes an impact on this entire community and has put Modesto on the map with The Modesto Ninerettes and all of her JAMZ competition teams.” Great accomplishments must be celebrated while we are here to appreciate the people achieving such accolades. Bravo Dottie Wright! You deserve your flowers NOW and our community thanks you!

The Goat is Back By Chris Murphy

There are places in town that have become an institution. One of my favorite places in Modesto is the intersection of 10th and J Street. To me, that is the epicenter of downtown. The people, the place, the plaza, the food, the drink and most of all, the music. Music? Yes, music and great food go hand and hand. When you can combine all of these things, it is really special, and Ralston’s Goat is Modesto’s “Rock n Roll Restaurant”. Let’s learn more. The pandemic was hard on our local businesses and it hammered the restaurant and music community. Owner Mike Shelton is no stranger to working hard to run a business, as he was a successful bar owner in San Francisco and then opened Ralston’s Goat in 2015. Soon after opening, the bar scene there attracted Modesto’s musicians and the Goat became an active supporter of music, sponsoring bands on their amazing patio, inside the bar and in the main restaurant alongside their food and drink. Ralston’s Goat has won the Modesto Area Music Award for supporting live music 4 times. Fast-forward into COVID, Ralston’s was the first place to welcome live music back, utilizing the outside space for safe distancing. They hosted fundraisers, VMI Showcases, Sunday brunches and more. My band Third Party have played this patio and bar many times. This place gave local music a home, supported by their bar and food sales. There is much gratitude from our local music community. Today, Mike Shelton is focused on taking The Goat to the next level. Long time chef Sam Scroggins has become his secret weapon, honing her full range cooking

12

skills through the pandemic and now, there is a tasty, organized and focused menu of breakfast, lunch and dinner item that will appeal to any taste. The results are flat out delicious. The kitchen is rounded out by Jacob Brunlow to make things go smooth. Sam was trained at culinary school by local chef Hank Olsen and she also trained alongside Ashley Olsen, who also shared her love of baking. Modesto is so lucky to have so much great culinary talent. Sam also loves to make wedding cakes and the classic bakery items. You will notice that the food, great plating, super fresh ingredients, excellent size portions, and a new focus on great service is a great combo. Mike and Sam are not only committed to great food and amazing drinks, but also a great and friendly experience at The Goat. True to our Modesto culture, Sam is also a classic car fan and her dream car is a 69 Chevelle SS black with green stripes. Gotta love that. Breakfast / Brunch at the Goat has always been a favorite of mine, sitting on the patio, people watching, enjoying Irish Coffee with a great egg scramble and hashbrowns.

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

Sam has really knocked breakfast out of the park with one of the best Breakfast Burritos and the hall-of-fame Ranchero Bowl, featuring a chili over a bed of black beans, egg, tortillas and more. The avocado toast featured a large piece of artisan bread, double bacon and egg and avocado. Of course you can get eggs your way. Breakfast starts at 10 am Wed – Sun. Lunch is the biggest change. Mike has a new lunch menu that is designed to fill you up and get you back to work in time, if you choose to do that. We enjoyed a Buffalo Crispy Chicken sandwich and fries and a wonderful Buffalo Crispy Chicken Salad. You can also get the Ralston’s Cheeseburger and a side of fries or salad. Perfect for a lunch work break, but however, the bar is always tempting, so a late lunch may be in order. Lunch transitions to dinner with new pan baked pizzas and tasty chicken strips. Wow these are good. The pepperoni is a solid go to and the bbq chicken is delicious in both large and small sizes. Nosh on these for happy hour and take the rest home for morning pizza! Take notice of the pasta dishes. Mike’s

mom is the inspiration for the sauces and Sam’s technique delivers a soft but firm pasta with amazing flavor. I asked Sam what her favorite go-to pasta was and she said, Shrimp Scampi. This makes sense as her favorite trilogy is salt, pepper and garlic. I can’t wait to try that. There are nightly pasta specials and you can also enjoy some tasty almond salmon, gourmet burgers, and so much more. Sam’s goal is consistency, “I want people to know they can count on the Goat to deliver a great meal” she explains. Now let’s talk desert. Let’s talk about cheesecake. Sam is an amazing baker and her go-to treat is to make an amazing cheesecake. Each night, there will be special cheesecake that will be a “must add” to your meal. It is hard enough to pass on desert, but with a special treat like this, it will be impossible so save room. Today she made a special pecan pie cheesecake. To die for. Can’t wait to try another. Spring is here and look for the Goat patio to be filled with music on a regular basis. Open mic with Ray Ray on Wed, Jazz Jam on Thursdays with David Dow, Live music Fri and Sat nights and Sunday brunch music. You will find something you love to eat and you will find a new band as well and meet some new friends. I hope to see you there.

MEAL ON A BUN There are two really important things that happened this month. Fast Eddie sold his Meal on a Bun to a really big fan. Yes, one of our favorite drive ins and long time Graffiti legend place with great burgers, shakes and fries was sold to Robert Wilson, owner of Devine Swine. Eddie Gibson started there in 1962, purchasing it from his parents in 1975. With Robert, he found the perfect person to sell it that will keep the spirit and the memories alive. Expect to see your faves, but also new creations from Robert and, drum roll, beer. Have no fear, the vibe and the décor will stay but look for new additions to the collection. about how we support them as people. It became clear very early on that the scope and scale of the pandemic’s impacts on every aspect of our lives—from education to the economy—was something we hadn’t seen before. That’s when the Sutter Health organization overall broadened the approach to addressing our team’s mental, emotional and financial needs. This included investing in mental health resources including anxiety and depression counseling, traumatic event recovery, grief response, stress relief, disaster coping and resilience trainings. Our commitment to the wellness and resiliency of these healthcare professionals has never been stronger, and as leaders, we will continue to stand by them and support them into the future, as we all continue fight through COVID toward a more hopeful future for our community.

By Chris Murphy

Gino Patrizio:

at the helm of Sutter’s Memorial Medical Center

The last 24 months have turned our world and our community upside-down. We have new rules, new lexicon, new fears, new accomplishments and a desire to get back to our normal routines. Throughout the pandemic, from the months even before everything was closed down, our front-line health care workers were the tip of the spear on this deadly virus. They were fighting it when we didn’t even know what it was. So here we are in March 2022. It is traditionally March Madness where we celebrate the college basketball championships, but I think we need to celebrate our Health Care Champions that helped us get though and with their amazing teamwork, are helping slam dunk this virus and keeping our community as healthy as possible. Throughout 2020 and 2021, day in and day out, our community’s nurses, doctors, anesthesiologists, housekeeping, ambulance drivers—all of our local hospital’s caregivers—were there. They were holding down the fort, taking care of patients, working endless hours, through the waves of infection that kept coming. Gino Patrizio has been at the helm of Sutter’s Memorial Medical Center for the last three and a half years. He is a University of Southern California, University of San Diego and Harvard graduate who has taken his experience and expertise to help serve the Central Valley. He is even a classic car guy that digs our American Graffiti culture. But above all, he helps lead teams at the hospital as part of Sutter Health’s integrated network to best support the community’s health needs through its not-for-profit mission. We invited Gino to share his views on what we have been through and what’s ahead for our community. ModestoView: How did your teams respond when the first waves of virus patients started to come Gino Patricio: Memorial Medical Center has a long history of caring for patients with complex illnesses, including infectious diseases. Our teams here are trained and equipped to provide high-quality care

14

while protecting the safety of care providers, hospital staff and other teammates. Yet, the pandemic was something we hadn’t experienced before in our lifetimes. Our teams stood ready, but I don’t believe any of us could have imagined how long this global health threat would last or how much it would impact our everyday lives. Fortunately, we are part of Sutter’s integrated network, which allowed us to quickly scale care for patients. It helped us acquire the necessary PPE, expand our critical care abilities and expand our testing capacity—all essential components during various surges. Moreover, if you have ever spent much time with healthcare professionals, then you know that – much like our brave soldiers and first responders – these are people who put themselves in harm’s way to care for others. When members of our community began suffering gravely from COVID, the courageous men and women who work at all of our local hospitals were ready and willing to care for them.

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

MV: What was the most helpful support you got from the community during this time? GP: They were especially generous and kind, which is no surprise since we are part of such a close-knit community. Everyone from community groups to area businesses and local families dropped off meals, snacks, and other thoughtful gifts at the hospital or made signs out front to encourage our teams. The majority of our community members also did their part to help lessen the chance of severe disease and hospitalizations from COVID by getting vaccinated when they were eligible.

MV: How did your team stay positive during the worst of it? GP: Healthcare workers have always endeavored to be there for each other as much as possible—and that took on new meaning. Over the past two years, we’ve recognized that it is less about how we support our teams as employees, and more

MV: What are some lessons learned through the pandemic? GP: The COVID-19 pandemic affirmed for us that our health is precious. We need to do everything we can to protect it. The pandemic did cause some people to delay preventative health appointments, like mammograms, colonoscopies and skin exams. Regular check-ups for patients with chronic or complex diagnoses like diabetes or high blood-pressure are important to resume as well. Preventative care helps keep chronic health issues from becoming something emergent or acute. We encourage folks to get back on track with these appointments, which are important for long-lasting health.

MV: How do you think our health care professionals handled these circumstances overall? GP: It’s true what they say about those who work in healthcare: they are special people. They are all heart, and they are true team players. They continue to answer the call even as circumstances evolve. I am deeply humbled by their resolve and consider myself privileged to work amongthem.

MV: What now? GP: It’s important to acknowledge that COVID isn’t gone—we will continue to coexist with it. We can maintain the healthy practices we’ve adopted, which support our loved ones as well as our larger community: good hygiene, vaccinations for all those eligible, and staying up to date on our routine health appointments.

NURSING VIEW

By Susan Powers, RN & Lisa Martinez, RN

Working as a nurse during this deadly pandemic has been a humbling experience. These difficult challenging times have taught all of us in the healthcare field so much, as we started this pandemic we were hailed as heroes, however we quickly became overwhelmed by the constantly evolving policies, procedures and guidelines the pandemic created. We juggled floating to floors outside of our comfort zones to help where we were needed. We cared for patients and comforted families who relied on our constant communica-

tion for updates and facilitated I-pad visits so families could see their loved ones faces not in person but on a screen. We held the hands of those who feared for their lives, spending extra time at the bedside as patients expressed loneliness, isolated behind hospital doors in seclusion; knowing we were risking self exposure or worse yet exposing our families. We all value the powerful bonds that have been created among co-workers as we completed hard days we would high-five each other or pat each other on the back for pulling together to help our peers and provide compassionate care. Job well done, sometimes tired emotionally and physically. We have lost friends and family members to this virus with an elusive cure, all so terribly sad and heart breaking. One thing I can say, is we all share an overwhelming sense of pride as we are dedicated to show up and give our all, gown up, mask up, we strive to bring peace, hope, comfort and joy to each patient & family member whose lives we touched. It has been my greatest honor to be a registered nurse during these challenging times, and I know I speak for us all when I say we are a little more patient, caring and empathetic, not only at work but at home

BIG VIEW MUSIC MADNESS IS BA William Melendez Wayland Whitney

Music is back, and the people that make it are so ready to perform. Over the last few months, our live music scene has been getting back on its feet. Now with the mask guidelines reduced, there may be more opportunity to gather and party. Over the last two years, people have learned how to play, home concerts and web casts. Now it is time to get out on stage, tune up the guitars and do some rockin’! Music is so important. Live music is creative, making music is amazing and it makes our brains work in cool ways. That’s why music in the schools is so very important and it’s why music lessons are always a good idea. Modesto is a live music city and we are fortunate to have two “Schools of Rock” many music stores where they give lessons and a lot of experienced former rockers that all work together to keep our community fed with some great rock and roll, classical, jazz, blues, hip hop, bluegrass, country and so much more. The ever intrepid Middagh Goodwin connected with many of our local music teachers to see what makes them teach music and how it impacts our community. Darin Morris - Valley Music Institute Wayland Whitney - Conductor Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra Roy Stevens - General Director Opera Modesto Dave Dow - Modesto Junior College Gordon Kennedy - GK Music William Melendez - Music Director Norman Glick Middle School Dave Hawkes - VMI, GK Music, Hendrickson’s Music Carina Ibarra - Stanislaus Union School District Chris McPherson - Downey High Theatre learn a musical instrument?

What do you feel is the importance of and benefits from music education? Wayland Whitney: Music performance is highly demanding for our brains. A musician must simultaneously read, listen (both to themselves and the group), prepare, and react, while also trying to elicit an emotional response from an audience. I know of no other human activity that combines this refined athleticism and intellectualism with self-expression; these are necessities of Roy Stevens: Music Education in its many forms has the potential to inspire, develop and inform in unexpected ways: Developing self-esteem and self-confidence, learning teamwork in a non-competitive context, developing listening and focus skills, developing study skills. It is also fun, satisfying and creative. Those of us with strong math skills find ourselves greatly at home in music, those with weaker math skills improve upon them. Dave Dow: Music education and the Arts provide creativity, discipline and critical thinking to a person’s education. It takes a great deal of discipline to master an instrument that will help all other areas of a person’s education. Studies have shown that the study of music directly enhances a person’s math skills. Music is very symmetrical and based on mathematical ratios. Math is an essential component of a college education. I feel music education adds an essential ingredient to one’s liberal arts education.

16

Dave Hawkes: Learning an instrument and being involved with music requires discipline, preparation, perseverance, teamwork (when in a band) all of which can be applied in other aspects of life. What made you want to be a music teacher? WW: Growing up, I had some really inspiring music teachers, but also some music teachers that made me think “hey, I could do a better job than this!” So that’s what I did! My teaching philosophy ever since has been to be the teacher or run the ensemble that I wish I could have been in when I was younger. DH: I didn’t aspire to be a teacher at first. But when I started doing some teaching, I realized how inspiring it was to me when I could see a student start to grasp a concept or become excited about the drums or music in general. An added benefit has been that by having to explain musical concepts to people of all learning styles and ages I feel I have developed a stronger grasp of drumming and music

Carina Ibarra: Although I loved learning and playing tunes by ear, I was a bit of a late bloomer when it came to playing music formally. I’m extremely fortunate to have had music teachers in high school and college that were welcoming to beginners! In my work as a music teacher, I’m simply paying forward the gift that was given to me. I do my best to foster that “beginner energy” into a love for music!

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

What instrument do you play? RS: When attending Paradise Elementary School I learned to play the trumpet. And had the distinct thrill of participating in the Stanislaus County Honor Band…3rd section last chair! But I was there. Those elementary school lessons taught me to read music and about music. I stopped playing as soon as I could and took up choir at Modesto High School. At San Jose State University I was required to take serious piano lessons, but I have happily forgotten most of those skills. The one and only real instrument that I play is the Voice, perhaps the most complex of them all. We vocalists have to create and recreate the structure and tuning of the instrument at every moment. And those of us that are not natural vocalists, such as myself, have to accomplish and maintain major muscular adjustments and structure in order to sing at all. The music learning skills I learned at Paradise Elementary School laid the groundwork for more than 3 decades of performing as an international opera singer in 20+ countries.

William Melendez: Saxophone was my

first and my primary instrument, but I am proficient in most wind instruments and percussion. CI: My heart belongs to the steel pan! I also love to play ukulele, trumpet, percussion, and of course, to sing! Do you believe everyone can or should

WW: Absolutely! The voice is the first and most important instrument - everyone that can speak can (and should) sing, even if only in the shower. Drumming is the next most basic - rhythm is captivating, and our entire lives are ruled by rhythm. The blinking of the eyes, beating of the heart, walking down the street - all of it is drumming, so we all are percussionists, even if we don’t think of it that way. Gordon Kennedy GKMusic: I think that’s true. Even if only thru school. The benefits are huge, and it helps reinforce a love for music. Also, it gives q person a better appreciation for real talent. CI: Yes! I love to teach students that their bodies are an instrument. We can make music together anytime, anywhere with our hands, voices, feet, and anything else you can think of! How have you or do you have plans to integrate technology into your instruction? RS: The past two years have shown us that music lessons and classes can be satisfactorily conducted online. I have always used recording technology in my own voice training because a singer cannot hear what his/her own voice sounds like. Modern technology, such as the internet also provides incredible access to information and performances. DD: I have been in using music technology since 1975. It is integral to my musical endeavors. We started using Apple II

DM: First they have to realize that they can do it, and then in group performance, you have to be good enough at what you are doing, to hear and integrate with what everyone else is doing. This can be a process but a valuable and enriching one. GK: Fear and confidence. We just throw them out there fully prepared and once they realize they can perform and perform well the fear becomes manageable and they develop a sense of pride. It’s beautiful. CM: There are two areas that I often see in beginning performers. 1) Many students would rather play it safe and never try than to open the door for perceived embarrassment or failure. 2) Students often care more about being accepted by their peers than taking a risk to pursue their dreams/ desires. Both of these areas impact a student’s self-confidence. As a teacher, I have to be intentional to help students overcome these areas but acknowledge every one of their successes or wins and nudge them when the opportunity arises for them to step out of their comfort/safety zone.

computers with music software in 1977 and we have continued ever since. I started creating music technology classes in 1987 with the Introduction to Synthesizer and MIDI class. That led to four more classes and eventually the Certificate of Achievement in Recording Arts and Live Sound at MJC which is an 18 unit Certificate which is recognized statewide. We have a professional recording studio with a Pro Tools HDX system and we offer Pro Tools User Certification (Pro Tools Fundamentals 1 & 2) in the Recording Arts 2 class. We also have an electronic music studio all contained in the Modesto Junior College Music Lab with computers, synthesizers and music software tightly integrated into the music technology program. Students also receive a music technology bundle of equipment with a laptop to be able to use the music technology at home. WM: Aside from the physical skills needed to play and perform on an instrument or in a group. Technology plays a huge role in how we now consume music new and old. Thanks to sites like YouTube and streaming services like Spotify; concerts, artist discographies, and even printed music can be accessed digitally. In my classroom having this access means that my student’s experience is enriched. How important is the live performance?

the listener. There is an energy in this sharing. For people to do this, it takes courage and character and I believe it can be an important building block to an individual’s identity. CI: The pandemic has shown us that making music apart is just not the same! The magic of making music in the same place at the same time with others, all connected by the same beat... it’s something you can’t tell the student to appreciate. They have to experience the magic themselves! Chris McPherson: It’s a must. Many times, we put all the value on the outcome of the performance. Of course, every teacher wants their show to be excellent and great. But a live performance isn’t just to show the hard work or what students can do. We have to also remember that a live performance is for students to “share” as much as it is to “show.” A live performance is a moment where students can share their story or journey with their family and to live out their passion in singing, acting, dancing or tech. This opportunity is huge when words in a conversation may be difficult to articulate of what they love to do. Along with what is does for the students, it is crucial for the community to see a generation of students shining out a positive spirit highlighting the amazingness of their heart as opposed to what gets highlighted in the news. What is your feeling about written music vs improvisation? DM: It should definitely not be an eitheror nor competition between the two camps. Being able to read and write music is a wonderful skill that takes a while to develop. However, it is definitely not necessary to being a good musician and being able to share your musicianship with other musicians and the audience. On some level, you do have to understand what you are doing, whether that is intuitive or technical or academic, or a combination of all. WW: Improvisation is my greatest love! It is the practice of observing and reacting to what is now. Musicians improvise much more than they know, and Free Improv in the style of David Darling, Julie Webber, and others is something all musicians should practice. DD: I think both skills are essential to a well-rounded musician. I am classically trained as a written note reader. This offers the advantage of being able to play the music you have never heard before by simply reading the notes. Playing by ear or improvisation offers the ability to make up music on the spot by what you have heard before and forge new ideas in real-time. Pure creativity with previously mastered ideas. Nothing is better for composers. What would you tell a new student to encourage them to join a music program? GK: It’s so fun! You must try it. Never have I had a student join my band program and say “that wasn’t fun” they love it!

Subscribe to our You Tube channel at: youtube.com/modestoview

CI: I like to tell students that if they learn how to play an instrument or learn how to use their singing voice, they can have music as a part of their lives forever! DH: I would tell them to attend a live music performance and observe how much fun the musicians on stage are having and how much the audience is enjoying it and that they could be a part of something like that too. Anything else you would like to add? DM: These are exciting times for music. There is so much going on and I believe people are aware of the different eras more now than ever before. There are many online resources that can really help but the live music experience of playing with other people is still the same. WM: As live music comes back, show support as much as you can. Musicians, young and old, need you in their audiences to continue to thrive and do what they do best. Provide us with the soundtrack to life. CM: My philosophy is not what I can get for myself but rather what I can give from myself that matters most. I want and will utilize my professional connections and knowledge at Disney to be a conduit for students who want to go into the performing arts. However, if I can help a student grow personally or professionally, remind them that they matter, create an environment where they can be successful and simply be a place where they can be accepted, the theatre skills I teach become secondary to the bigger goal. What is the first album you owned? DM: The Beatles-Abbey Road WW: Ha, it was two - an album of Schubert’s greatest “hits” [quotes mine], and a recording of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Bless my parents, they didn’t really know why I liked what I liked, but they supported it, and they are still my biggest fans! RS: All-Star Country And Western Jamboree – 24 Stars, 24 Hits! Love those characterful storytellers in song. DD: Revolver The Beatles WM: The first album I remember owning was “Weird Al” Yankovic’s Greatest Hits. It was a huge inspiration in that music didn’t have to be serious 100% of the time. If you’re not having fun while making music, you’re doing it wrong. GK: Maynard Ferguson Primal Scream CI: My parents got me a box set of Selena albums (on cassette!) for Christmas one year, and Amor Prohibido was definitely on repeat! CM: I think my first album was The Village People. But I owned many 45s first …like the Jackson 5, ABC! DH: Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass Going Places

ROCKABILLY VIEW

Celebrating Modesto’s Roots in Music

By Middagh Goodwin

McHenry Village A tradition of excellence since 1953

Discover the premier place to shop and dine in a garden setting. A key component and root sound of Rockabilly and in turn Rock n’ Roll can be traced back to the Doghouse slap bass style of Fred Maddox. The Maddox Brothers and Rose started playing music in Modesto back in 1937 and garnered crowds wherever they played. Bill Black, Elvis’s bassist was a huge fan of Fred Maddox and taught himself how to play like Fred by pounding the crab out of the strings to make a beat and learning some fingering, he kept the percussive attack which created a loud distinct slapping style then it crudely became musical, influencing a million players that remain a staple in Rockabilly and in course Rock n’ Roll. Fred Maddox’s bass is displayed at the Experience Music Project in Seattle. “They wanted his bass because they believe he might have hit the first note of rock ‘n’ roll on it.” The Maddox Brothers and Rose are part of Modesto and the World’s musical history. The ModestoView celebrates our ties to Rockabilly with monthly Rockabilly concerts and plans to create a yearly Rockabilly Luau to take place at the Graffiti Car Museum. On Wednesday, March 23rd at 7 pm come out to Ralston’s Goat for the next Rockabilly Cruise Night with America’s premier Psychobilly band The Koffin Kats returning to the 209 for the first time to grace a stage in the 209 in 6 years(the last time was at the Gypsy Shack in Sonora) and even longer since they rocked Modesto. Koffin Kats are a psychobilly trio from Detroit, Michigan. Fusing the swing of classic rockabilly with the hot-wired energy and ghoulish imagery of the Misfits, this band proves that high-octane psychobilly is still alive and kicking in the American midwest. Formed in 2003 Koffin Kats were formed in 2003 by lead singer and upright bassist Vic

18

Victor and guitarist/vocalist Tommy Koffin, who had been part of the Motor City punk scene for some time before trying their hands at the doom-struck twang of their punk-rockabilly fusion. Eric “E-Balls” Walls performed with them in that first year, took a break and returned in 2007 and they have not slowed down. Releasing With 8 full-lengths, a split and 2 EPs they have consistently put out new music and have constantly toured since they hit the road in 2004 to support their Self Titled debut. They are currently on tour to support the “Ya Can’t Take It With Ya” EP that was released during the Pandemic. Opening up the show is Modesto’s own Tony T and the Pendletons fresh back from a run of shows including the Rockabilly Reunion in Lake Havasu in Arizona. I talked to Tony at Trevino’s Barbershop recently and he told me the band has booked studio time and will be recording several new songs to be released soon. They will also have music in the bonus features of the prison exploitation film Reform School Girls deluxe Bluray. If you need to get your hair done, need some pomade or other hair care product or looking for some cool rockabilly music stop by the barbershop when you are on 10th Street in Downtown Modesto. Come on out for some great music on March 23rd at 7 pm at Ralston’s Goat located on the Historic Graffiti Cruise Route and celebrate Modesto’s History in Music. by Chris Murphy

Could this be it?

Our performing arts spaces have been sitting on the start line, revving their engines, some false starts and stops and now could this be a real countdown. Many of our spaces have good solid COVID protocol by requiring full vaccination. This is the way to do it in my opinion. Exciting things are happening in our local arts community. We have great leadership in our local companies and new creativity. I can’t say it enough, a community with strong performing arts and music offerings will be the creative cities that will win. I hope our elected officials will see this and build on it. These are just a few of the offerings in March. Check out www.modestoview.com to stay updated on show-times and other events. Big news at Downey High School. Christopher McPherson has returned to Modesto to lead Downey Theatre Arts. On hiatus for the last 2.5 years, Chris is bringing new energy to the venerable Downey program. For the last 17 years, Chris has worked in Disney Entertainment, honing his skills in the most creative place. Now he is set to restart this program and take it to a new level with a new performance this month, We asked him a few questions about his ideas, plans and what we can expect. What do you feel is the importance of and benefits from performing arts education? Performing Arts education creates an environment and opportunity for students to grow in becoming the best version of themselves. It challenges students to step beyond their comfort zone, provides successes which will build self-confidence, practical understanding on how to work as a team, and opens the door for talent to be uncovered and discovered. What made you want to be a theatre teacher? Sir Isaac Newton said “If I had seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” By standing on the shoulders of those came before us, we can see further and achieve more. In my life, I have had giants in the arts who allowed me to stand on their shoulders and see further than I could on my own. For this, I am own them by paying it forward to be the best giant I can for this generation of artists. I have been blessed to have worked for Disney Entertainment for many years and know that experience and knowledge most people only dream of is not just for me but to be impart and share. FOLLOW US:

What areas of expertise do you have in theatre? My expertise is producing and creating but will gravitate towards choreography, set deign and technical theatre. My theatre experiences started with dancing then in college I gained set design and acting skills. As I have grown as an artists, I have found myself not wanting to be in the spot light but to hold the spot light for others. Being able to see the big picture with detailed execution is what I find myself excelling in. In my years with Disney Entertainment, I had a team of experts that knew their craft well in all areas of theatre. So as a leader in that environment, it was important for me to study different fields to be able to work creatively and keep the standards high.

The Prospect gets Aristocratic!

The O’Donnell family, fallen Irish aristocracy, have gathered at their crumbling family estate for a wedding. As the patriarch lies dying in his upstairs bedroom, the grown-up children sort out the truth about the family’s past, present, and future. In his elegiac play, Friel (Faith Healer, Molly Sweeney) explores dysfunctional family dynamics and decaying culture with

the dark humor and lyricism Prospect audiences have come to love. March 18-27 - Evening and Matinee shows Tix and info at www.prospecttheatreproject.org Please consider becoming a member, I did. Holes? Yes this great show is being presented by the Gallo Center Repertory Group and is one my daughters all-time favorites. Stanley Yelnats, a boy whose family is cursed, is sent to a juvenile detention camp for a crime he did not commit. He and the other boys at the camp are forced to dig large holes in the dirt every day, eventually realizing they are digging holes because the Warden is searching for something. Soon three separate stories coalesce to reveal why Stanley’s family has a curse and what the Warden is looking for in this delightful version of the multiaward-winning novel by Louis Sachar. Celtic Opera

Where did the Celts come from? Where did they go to? What is Celtic Music…or Celtic influence music? These are some of the fun questions investigated by Opera Modesto’s 14 wonderful singers and instrumentalists in the Celtic Diaspora concert. The central valley performers come from diverse backgrounds and represent a wide range of experiences, ages, and musical interests. Opera Modesto’s General Director, Roy Stevens, will narrate the concert, connecting the dots. There will be music that fits everyone’s obvious definition of Celtic music (Danny Boy, Loch Lomond, etc.), interspersed with music from other countries and languages that relate in some way to the Celtic Diaspora. This is part of the Sundays at CBS Series March 6 – Congregation Beth Shalom 1705 Sherwood, Modesto Tix and info at www.cbsmodesto.org/ concert-series.html

The 2022 Women’s History Month theme is “Providing Healing, Promoting Hope”, is both a tribute to the ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during this ongoing pandemic and also a recognition of the thousands of ways that women of all cultures have provided both healing and hope throughout history. Music as medicine has been a source of “pain management” and a therapeutic choice amongst the masses during this time. In the early part of the shutdown, we were able to enjoy live streaming and learned to evolve with the CDC and local guidelines to keep each other safe and still enjoy live music. During this time local women musicians stepped forward as leaders and gave their all to elevate morale and inject some joy into an otherwise morose atmosphere. The three Lady Bosses behind Modshop and PorchFest-Trisha Rosenow, Ruhi Sheik and Kate Trompetter created CouchFest and gave us such a unique take on shelter in place, leaving the community wanting more and anticipating the return to inperson entertainment. Female musicians

Women Are Essential

By Patty Castillo Davis

and bands with female members ruled this event and drew the largest streaming audiences. Horizon Point, SUNDUST, The Vibes, Portrait of Elysia, Remedy, Blues Box Bayou Band-remember these band names. All of these groups have strong women players who are also the founders or co-founders and there are many more too numerous to mention. Make the effort to hear them perform and support their online platforms. Please join me on Thursday, March 17 for the monthly music event-Thursday Vibe with Patty Castillo Davis and Friends. Every third Thursday at 950 10th St, Ste 16. From 5-7 pm this free event is in the ModSpot space where Art Walk attendees can enjoy a concert, drop-in style. Free beverages and light snacks are available. Kids welcome. If you are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work in tandem with a woman musician, promoter, producer, or venue owner you will find her work ethic and creative cultivation is extraordinary and unparalleled. Women in this industry are grossly underrepresented (and underpaid). Female representation matters, so let’s empower them to raise their voices.

McHenry Shamrock Affair With St. Patrick’s Day ahead of us, many are likely looking forward to resuming the vibrant celebrations that have been missed for the last two years with people gathering, bars buzzing, and fun all around. Fanciful and colorful shamrock celebrations are a Modesto community affair, with one of the popular celebrations being the dinner party hosted at the McHenry Mansion. However, the ties between St. Patrick’s Day and the McHenry family go back over 100 years to 1905, with a party celebration which afterwards was referred to as an “unusually brilliant function” by the Stanislaus Weekly News. This lively “fancy dress party,” hosted by Oramil and Myrtie McHenry at their home, was deemed one of the most unique events in the annals of Modesto social affairs. Based on reporting of the celebration, it was like no party that Modesto and its residents had seen previously. At least forty invited guests arrived shortly after 9:00PM for the late-night festivities in a wide variety of costumes ranging from a Charles II courtier, ballet girl, fortune teller, to even George Washington, just to name a few. The

pomp and spectacle unfolding within the green and shamrock-clad halls of the McHenry home went on for hours. Dancing was started by a grand march to kick off the gathering, with a live orchestral ensemble providing the music for the evening’s attendees. A punchbowl provided refreshments, and once past midnight it was time for dancing to cease and for dining to commence. Where someone today would be surprised not to find corned beef and cabbage in your St. Patrick’s Day plans, the meal that Oramil and Myrtie had arranged for their guests excluded the classic dish but was certainly extravagant: “Oysters on the half shell, Lobster salad, Turkey, chicken, jelly, olives, salted almonds, Neopolitan ice cream, cakes and confection.” It was then not until nearly 2:00AM that party came to an end once partygoers and the hosts had their fill of libations, dancing, dinner, and merriment. This news-worthy party was one of the books, so here’s to continuing a Modesto tradition of great St. Patrick’s Day fun and celebration. Learn more and visit www.mchenrymansion.org/

Women Making History

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we take a look at some of our local women who will make history and are out there innovating and taking names already. We have a great local success story with Modesto’s Halee Smith. A few years ago, this girl would be showing up at the Barking Dog jams, sitting in with some of the best musicians and learned how to gig, how to shred, how to work as a band. And she was impressive, frequently getting tagged to jam. Over the years, she has fronted her own band, has attended and exhibited at the annual NAMM show, has developed the sensational Girls Smash Guitars project that has had great exposure all over the world and has been featured in many music magazines and she has been a regular here in the pages of ModestoView. All the while, she has been crafting her core project, Rockit Music gear. She would be at every makers market with her excellent guitar straps. I bought on immediately and it is one of the most comfortable straps,

By Chris Murphy

PLUS it is all mirror spectrum finish an I feel like a rock star. Well now she is hitting the big time with major artists. Most recently, country superstar Kacey Musgraves has been sporting here new and exciting LED guitar strap. This is big time cool and she has even been at the shows to tech and make sure it all goes great. One of the coolest things from my point of view, is how supportive her parents are. This is a classic case of seeing talent, and help make it happen and teach independence at the same time. This is really a cool story and I can’t wait to see what she does next so we asked her a few questions. Q: Do you believe everyone can or should learn a musical instrument? A: I believe anyone can. Everyone doesn’t continued on pg 21

All we need is for you to come out and be part of the scene!

from pg 20, Women Making History have to. Find what you love and learn it. Q: Where do you plan to take your technology next? A: More big tours! I’m actually working with a couple of people right now for their upcoming tours. Q: How important is the live performance? A: It is one of the best times a artist can get on a personal level with their fans and the fans can with the artist and connect, it’s a energy that can’t be explained or made anywhere else. It’s important that it’s good so everyone has a good experience.

Q: What are the most common problems for beginning performers, and how do you overcome them? A: learning something hard vs just making it sound good. Something that sounds good is way more beneficial then learning/playing something hard. Sounding good is key and takes time to learn. That’s something I wish I knew in the beginning stages but really playing, learning, to continue doing it and not nailing everything is all part of the process. FIT VIEW

Your Modesto Bike Trails By Efren Martinez

This March’s FitView was inspired by our friend Middagh Goodwin. It was he who gave me the idea as well as the information on our local bike trails. Honestly, I was never one to explore our local trails since I’ve always been more of a road bike kind of person. My bike rides always consisted of at least 30 miles and I just can’t get 30+ miles from any of these trails. That’s Okay! I know that not all of our friends out there care to ride that far or even bike to neighboring towns and back like those few in my Triathlon fitness hood. Below are a few local bike trails that our friend shared with me. Feel free to bike ride local on any of these trails while enjoying our beautiful and positive city of Modesto. Thank you Middagh for inspiring us all to ride locally. The Virginia Corridor Trail is a biking/walking/running trail and has some exercise spots along its 4.2 paved miles. The Virginia Corridor Trail represents the transformation of a former Tidewater Southern Railway corridor in Modesto to a premier linear park, trail and recreational gathering place. Currently open from College Avenue to Woodrow Avenue, the popular landscaped trail connects to many of the city’s residential neighborhoods, schools, parks, churches and retail establishments.

Along the newer northern stretch of the trail, a bridge transports trail users safely over busy W. Briggsmore Avenue. In the future the trail will be extended on the former rail corridor even farther north to Bangs Avenue, connecting to the Hetch Hetchy Trail along the way. The Hetch Hetchy Trail extends diagonally through the northwestern portion of Modesto on the wide right-of-way of its namesake water pipeline, which runs underground in Modesto. Operated by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, the pipeline supplies water from the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in Yosemite National Park to the City by the Bay. Power lines run overhead, but landscaping adds visual interest, while two scenic parks—Chrysler 99 Park and Wesson Ranch Park—offer opportunities to play and relax. Dry Creek Trail is 8.6 miles and consists of paved and unpaved terrain which is good for mountain biking as well as walking and running. The paved Dry Creek Trail begins near downtown Modesto and meanders east through a series of neighborhood parks along Dry Creek. The pathway features a couple of footbridges and roadway underpasses and is well-used by locals; you will usually see herds of people walking, running, skating and biking, with many accompanied by leashed dogs. Tuolumne River Trail is 2.3 miles of a paved path that is winding and follows the course of its namesake river in Modesto. The scenic trail captures the true beauty of the region’s landscape as it loops through dense riverside woodlands. The trail also provides access to the developing Tuolumne River Regional Park. On the northern leg of the loop, plane spotters will appreciate the trail’s run close to Modesto City-County Airport. Follow me at www.facebook.com/QuakeFitness & www.facebook.com/quakedj

MARATHON VIEW Calling all runners! The Modesto Marathon is back!

By Chris Murphy

$0 ENROLLMENT $22.99 A MONTH

If you are hoping to go to the Boston or New York Marathon, the Modesto Marathon is rated one of the top 50 ways to make the cut. The Modesto Marathon is quickly becoming one of the Go-To marathons with a fast flat course, great views of the mountains, excellent support and pace teams and a good early start that brings in top finishers around 9:30 am. March 27 brings the Modesto Marathon where thousands of elite runners will join those doing their first Marathon on a fast flat course thought Modesto and the surrounding countryside. There is a pre race expo on the 26th at the CrossPoint Pavilion, and then it is all action on Sunday morning. ModestoView will be there to show you the action as it happens, but better yet, come out and cheer these athletes as they run against each other and the clock.

24

You can beat the system and preregister and then come to the Marathon Expo on Saturday and pick up all of your race packs and avoid the pre-race jitters. There is a full, half, 10k and 5k race for all abilities. Get ready to run fast, have fun and make the Modesto Marathon your stepping stone to the Boston and or New York Marathon. You can even be a virtual runner and compete! After the race, cool down and enjoy the Finish Line Festival for those 21 and over there will be Firestone Walker beer and Barefoot wine. There will be a Kids Zone at Crosspoint Church with bounce houses, a rock wall, superheroes all making a great day for the youngsters. There will also be a food truck alley with taco trucks, bbq, kettle corn and fresh juice. Avoid last-minute congestion. Pick up your race packet at the Fitness Expo Saturday from 10 am until 5 pm at CrossPoint Family Pavillion. UNPLUGGED VIEW Tumbleweeds by Aaron Rowan

I binged my way through Amazon’s ‘Jack Reacher’ series last month. I admire the character, that heroic hulking hobo who wanders around the country at will with no permanent address. In the show he comes to a small town because of a local musician he wants to learn more about, and, well, it reflects the kind of existence I’d love to have, living full-time on the road exploring this great big land and the music it has to offer. While I hold onto that dream, let’s meet some good people who actually manage to live it. For the last decade, The Rough & Tumble - multi-instrumentalists Mallory Graham and Scott Tyler - have been rambling back and forth across the country, bringing their ramshackle style of dumpster-folk/thrift store-Americana to audiences wherever they will have them. In the early days, they were just two friends playing music together at a North Carolina coffee shop inside a permanently parked double-decker bus every Friday night. Any songwriter will tell you it’s maddening for their songs to be relegated to background noise. You have two options when this happens: blend into the background or sing louder. The Rough & Tumble chose to sing louder. They are songwriters and storytellers who have their listeners in stitches one minute and falling apart at the seams the next. As Scott & Mallory put it: joy and sorrow, comedy and dramas all have the same punchline, it’s just

26

the setup that’s different. In 2015, the bandmates-turnedspouses decided to hit the road. They sold everything they could, bought a camper, packed up their instruments, and rode off into the endless sunset, touring relentlessly ever since. The duo was voted The Listening Room Network’s 2019 Artist of the Year, and their song ‘The Hardest Part’ won the Independent Music Awards Best Americana Song of 2019. Now, the pair are ready to bring their rich Americana sound to Modesto after a two-year setback. March 25, The Rough & Tumble are the features at my ‘Friday Night Folk Flight’ series at The Dragonfly Art For Life. It’s half listening-room concert, half a paint-and-listen event, but the creative energy in this space is always crackling. The duo take the stage at 7:30 pm and as always it’s a $10 admission plus extra fees for anyone who feels like connecting with their own artistic side. March also marks the start of what I hope will be a shift back towards heavily featuring original Americana/folk songwriters. On 3/11 we have Us4Love, local winners of the ‘Best Band Composition’ at the Valley Talent Project and 4-time MAMA Award nominees; and on 3/18, it’s BanjerDan, banjo player & multi-instrumentalist with witty and entertaining original songs rooted in straight-ahead bluegrass and branching out to include folk, country, blues, oldies, and other styles. If you appreciate original songwriting, don’t miss these evenings of sound and color. Reserve seats at modestounplugged@yahoo.com or 209543-5306.Intimate performances. Infinite playlist. Happy MARCH Modesto

By Grace McNamara

I hope you all had a nice February and ate a lot of chocolate this Valentine’s Day. With March here, this means St. Patrick’s day is coming up. This holiday is especially important to me because I am part Irish. There is a super fun and tasty option to do here in Modesto that’s festive for St. Paddy’s day! This is called the Celtic afternoon tea! You can enjoy the traditional fare of Ireland! There are sandwiches, cheese plates, pastries, and other sweet treats. This event is from March 2nd through April 2nd at the Dragonfly Tea Room. For more information about it, you can visit their website at www.dragonflytearoom.net. I have to admit my favorite thing to look

forward to in March is the Girl Scout cookies! This annual fundraiser teaches young girls many different life skills. Buying these delicious cookies is a great way to support the organization. There are many assorted flavored cookies to choose from. Personally, my favorite is Caramel Delights. Buying from your local girl scout is a great way to stay involved and support our wonderful community! A challenging opportunity coming up this month is the Modesto Marathon. The run takes place on March 27th. If a marathon sounds too tough, no worries. You can choose from a 5k, 10k, half marathon, or full. ShadowChase Running Club puts on this event. This is a non-profit organization that promotes fitness in the valley. The proceeds benefit the Teens-Run Modesto. It challenges teens to experience goal setting, character development, and work on physical and mental health. I suggest looking into this, whatever your fitness level may be. I hope you all have a safe and fun March! Publishers note: the new Girl Scout Adventrufuls are AMAZING! I bought 6 boxes.

ZEN VIEW Appreciation

By Mary Layton

Appreciation makes the world go round! Every year, usually in the 2nd week of February I am stunned at the sudden burst of blooming bliss of the orchards. In an instant I’m taken in by the unstoppable wonder of life, and I am truly thrilled to live here and witness this fantastic show. I’m thinking: What makes these trees look so perfect and beautiful is that they are cared for and pruned just right all year round by the experts who ensure that they are disease free and can produce a bountiful crop. At different times the show looks different. At dusk, against a pale blue sky the white full moon matches the while blossoms of the almond trees. Wow! It’s good to notice the beauty around us, it comforts a deeper part inside of me. When I have eyes to take in what all’s there to appreciate in my world I find my soul is blossoming too and I get new strength to meet whatever I’m faced with. Even adversity has its merits. Dealing with a pandemic may have helped us to change some of our core values.

We may have become more compassionate with ourselves as well as with others. We may learn how important it is to identify not only our own personal goals but also what’s good for others, for the community, for the world we live in. We may learn to appreciate what each new challenge, and even failure can teach us. It’s all about how I direct my mind, am I focused on the gloom or the bloom? So often when I picture my world from a bird’s perspective, from up high, I find that suddenly things look better. All the drama and anguish is taken out of it and I see things in a new light. I relax and take in a deep breath. Viewing everything from a large distance makes me appreciate our busy life in this fertile valley, brimming of livestock, great food and wine, wonderful entertainment and talented and courageous people that have come from all parts of the world to live here. Years ago I felt I needed to go to the Bay Area to find certain things. So many great new businesses, restaurants, bars, cafes and tea rooms have opened up here! I appreciate that all I want and more, is right here in my town. For more info go to taichi4modesto.com or call (209)572-4518
