DISCLAIMER!

ModestoView is created by real people, writing real words, making real music and taking real pictures. There is no AI cheating here and the local events we talk about in these pages are not virtual or digital, but things you can really do, created by real local people who create real local events that need you, in person to be there. Remember, as cool as you think AI might be, it is all based on the hard work and original content of OTHERS. Be original create your own work. So ditch your VR Goggles, shut down your Meta world and head outside. Find a café, a trail, drive the blossom cruise. It’s beautiful out there and enjoy the real things that will fill you with life and love.

Greetings Friends,

Happy Modesto March !

Considering this is a Murphy national holiday month, we are already getting ready for a Friday St. Patrick’s Day event.  Hope to have a couple of pints of Murphy’s on this special day and enjoy the first REAL back to normal celebration since you know when.  We all remember that it was on March 17, that the world shut down in 2020 and hopefully everyone is feeling safe and healthy and feeling the luck of the Irish.   Erin go Brach!

It’s March, it’s beautiful, it’s green so let’s get going. Literally, let’s get up, put your VR goggles away, get your sneakers on and walk out the door and get going, get moving, get exploring.  There is so much to do.  Check out our BigView this month as we highlight so many things you can do, no matter what your ability.

This month we get on the road and trail with the Modesto Marathon that will be themed for the Graffiti USA Museum. The race expo will be at the Graffiti Museum and we hope that you will stop by and make a donation to bring this to life.   On

race day, come hang out and cheer on the runners as they begin their final mile to the finish line and we celebrate those with all abilities that attempt this event.

It seemed for a decade or two, equality was something that we took for granted.  All of the hard-fought issues seemed to be settled.  But now it seems we have to raise our voices and stand ground that we formerly thought was stable.   We must not let politicians strip rights and legislate their personal and religious beliefs.  People are free to believe what they want, but to force this on others is oppression, and even abuse.  All people must be treated as equal, and good people will stand up for those with lesser voices.  There really isn’t much more to this.  Give where you can, do what you can and stand up for those in need and remember, that your own freedom is not better than someone else’s.  This Women’s History Month, we celebrate the accomplishments of our local women and the inspiration they are to so many. We need our leaders of all races, orientations, and beliefs. Let’s celebrate this.

I celebrate my amazing Irish Murphy Girls, Rebecca, Madison and Abigail and admire the strong independent and caring people they are.   You are the greatest and without my family, there is really nothing else.  I love you all and learn from you daily and my life is richer because of my friends and family, as that is really what it is all about.   We keep learning, exploring, respecting and connecting and we will all do something great.

But most of all this month, I thank all of you that are out there creating events, hosting neighborhood meetings, starting new businesses and being the positive change that Modesto needs.   That is why ModestoView is here, to celebrate all of you and help point the way for positive Modesto area living.  It truly takes teamwork so that we can stay focused on our mission to “Serve Civic Pride Daily”. Thanks to you all and I will see you out and about in this fun city and please tell me what you like about ModestoView and what we can do better to make this a better place.

Leading out the Modesto Marathon on a mythical start is AJ Mitchell in his blue racing chair.  AJ is one of our more active marathon, 5 and 10K racers and this will be his 15th marathon.  To date, he has completed 11 marathons since 2014.  Thanks to MJ Mangano for creating this epic composite cover as we get ready for the Modesto Marathon.

Fred C Beyer High School graduate and Modesto-born actress Ginger Gonzaga, co-star of the new TV action comedy True Lies premiered on CBS on March 1st at 10 pm. Ginger Gonzaga reprises the role of Helen Tasker, initially played by Jamie Lee Curtis(who coincidentally was born in Stockton, CA) in the new series based on the 1994 James Cameron film True Lies that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger in the role of husband Harry Tasker, reprised by Steve Howey, a dull computer salesman who is often away on trips to cover his actions as an elite government spy working for Omega Sector. When Harry accidentally reveals he has a secret, Helen Tasker is brought into the world of espionage.  We were excited to see Conzaga as a supporting actress in Marvel+ She-Hulk in the role of Nicky Ramos and thrilled to see her as a lead in True Lies.

Home Grown and Still Fresh at 50

Home Grown started when three young musicians decided to learn some songs and perform acoustically at the Vintage over the Summer of 1973. That was 50 years ago. In 1976 they released their first self-titled album. In 1986 the Home Grown song You Can Fly was the soundtrack for the Grand Prize-winning CityVideo competition sponsored by the Arts & Entertainment network and featured the three of us at various Modesto locations. We also completed a video of our original song, Oh Brother! Our most recent release, Home Grown, Our Own, includes all-original songs from our history. In 2000 they received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the first Modesto Area Music Awards. Look for a full feature on Homegrown in our April issue.

Patrick Durr, Bruce Johnson, and Michael Lingg will celebrate this milestone by performing live at Uncle Lonny’s Birthday Bash at The State Theatre on April 8th at 7:30 pm tickets are available for $20 each online at www. thestate.org or at the box office.

St. Patrick’s Day Events

March 11th –

March 17th -

Is this one of the best months or what?  Well  Erin go Brach, March is one of the most special times of the year if you are Irish. Heck, it is one of the best months no matter what you are.   This year, St. Patrick’s Day is on a Friday.  This is amazing and you can start your day early at P. Wexford’s Pub at 3317 McHenry where they will have corned beef and cabbage and the traditional favorites and a big MAMA Award winning outdoor party that goes on to the wee hours with music indoors and outdoors and even bagpipes. Twisted Pig will have a big party called Hamcocked, and the McHenry Mansion is even in on the action and get your green on there.  You can also get your Irish on at a couple of pub crawls the previous weekend.   Our favorite is the original pub crawl that is FREE on the 11th, beginning at  7 at the Fox Pub.   Don’t forget to run up to Murphy’s on the 18th for Irish Day.

ART IS BLOWING IN THE WIND

What is blowing in the wind for art in March? Stanislaus Artist Open Studio maps are out this month, in print and online. The Open Studio art tour is on April 15 and 16. Save the date. My studio on the alley is one of the stops. www.stanislausaos.com or check their Facebook page. April Art View will have more information.

At Mistlin Gallery, a zephyr of change is going on. The Central California Art Association has been around for over 50 years, and the Stanislaus Arts Council now operates Mistlin Gallery and CCAA. Next show at the gallery featuring students K to 12 annual Young at Art.

Application to State of California Heartland Creative Corps Grants is now open. Grant proposals are due April 15 for the Heartland Creative Corps grants. Grant information sessions are going on in Modesto, Turlock, and Oakdale to help assist interested artists and art organizations. For more information, see www.stanislausarts.org or www.heartlandcreativecorps.org

The Chartreuse Muse will have a change of show featured artists in March. Artfully Yours program is ongoing, with Spring classes in the Clay Room and more. Master artist Don Hall has featured artists of the Muse in his Don Hall Works series on YouTube. Informative videos, Don has posted several exciting videos on art, artists, and techniques in ceramics. Find him @donhallworks On Facebook live and online. See Expose Yourself to Art Sundays at 3 PM. Susan Rossman is the featured artist at the Kruse-Lucas Gallery on Tully Rd. Across the street at the MJC Art Gallery, Pen Women Art and Ekphrastic exhibit of art

and art-inspired poetry. Reception is on March 2nd with the California State Poet Laureate. Check-in with MJC art gallery director Chelsea Gilmore. Dragonfly Art for Life and State Theatre’s next Paint Along event is March 9. Featuring the Impressionist Mary Cassatt paints the lives of the women around her in “Exhibition on Screen.” Kristy Moore is moving the date for Art classes at Queen Bean to Tuesdays.

You have a longer path on Third Thursdays as Ralston’s Goat and 18Seventy Brewing have been added to the venue roster. I saw Roger Smith’s photography over the pool tables and in the bar at the Goat. Picasso’s was open for February with “Uncaged Art” show sponsored by the Modesto Art Museum. Have a cup of coffee or a sandwich, as new art is coming in from Maggie Camps. Had a whispered question from Chris Murphy, what’s up with MoConArt? The answer, Kaila Kindley, the founder, is a whirlwind of creativity and has a new location on Kansas Avenue at 1101 Kansas Business Park. The KDSigman Media Productions Studios has a Grand Opening and Reception on March 18 and 19. I got a short tour with Kaila of the exhibition and teaching rooms, the podcast studio, the music studio, the soon-to-be black and white film and digital dark room, the music room, and through the Art Garden Café into his private studio. As at the old location, the Modesto Conservatory of art, music, and theater, the new creative cauldron hosts music production, recording, photography, digital art, and mixed media classes.

Drop in at his open house to see more.

Robert’s Ferry Gourmet: Where Families Meet Over Shakes and Mimosas!

You’ve probably seen Robert’s Ferry Gourmet’s popcorn all over store shelves in Modesto, but did you know Robert’s Ferry Gourmet is an actual store (two stores actually, one in Oakdale and the other Waterford) and they are SO much more than popcorn? I had been stalking their Facebook page for a while drooling over their frosés and mimosas. They serve local beers too-usually featuring some favs like Last Call, Dying Breed and Grains of Virtue. But we finally took the plunge when they advertised a wine-tasting night featuring Michael David Wines for only $10. $10! What a steal! For a mom on a budget that price tag was a win, and Michael David?!

Of the delicious “Freak Show” zin?! My excitement was hard to contain. I had high expectations for this night, being so familiar with Michael David Wines already. Roberts Ferry absolutely delivered! Wine on The Patio was a night filled with fun and deliciousness! You would never have known it was a winter night-the fire was going, the heaters were on, the chill was kept at bay. No one was wearing jackets as they held their wine glasses. You would’ve thought it was May with the gorgeous weather.  We were also served a charming charcuterie cup from Tidbits and some goodies from their snack and popcorn lines. Keep your wrist bands on when you attend a wine night folks, you get a 10% discount on everything you buy, too!

The Patio is a little hide-away in the back of the store, wistful, reminiscent of a small Parisian alleyway. And not just due to the adorable paintings on the walls, but because you feel like you are transported to another time, a simpler time. Before cell phones and tablets. There is no road noise--you can

sit, completely uninterrupted, and really connect with the people you brought with you. Unless you’re #BrewView, we connected with each other and everyone else because meeting new people and getting to know them is part of fantastic our human journey. And some of the people we got to know that night were none other than Kim and Nic West, owners of the Roberts Ferry Gourmet stores.

Robert’s Ferry Nut Company was founded in 1983 by Bill and Phyllis Mallory. Kim worked for the Mallorys for several years. In 2015, the opportunity to buy RFNC presented itself, and Kim and her husband Nic, alongside Kim’s sister, Stacey, bought it. In 2021, they renamed the business Roberts Ferry Gourmet, as they had expanded into way more than a nut company. Their caramel corn might be their flagship popcorn, but they have over 30 varieties (some seasonal) to choose from. For generations, Kim’s family has been in Roberts Ferry and for generations Nic’s family has been in Oakdale. Having a store in each place is giving back to their communities and investing in local families-through purchasing ag products, supplying jobs, and creating a space for families and friends to meet and enjoy each other’s company.

“Oakdale was missing a place for the family. We wanted somewhere kids could get a shake after school, but where moms could come get a glass of wine during the day, too. We needed a place the whole family could be together, building a community connection.” Kim said. We couldn’t agree more. With events like their “Kids Make & Take” with Soaps by Hailey, coming up on March 19th, they make it easy to do! Kids will make 2 items - a soap and a lip balm.

(Kids must be 6+ and parents must stay on site-but you won’t be bored because you’ll have a glass of wine to keep you company *wink wink*.) When the fun is done, each kid will receive a scoop of ice cream with toppings of their choice. On April 20th, there will be another Wine Tasting on the Patio, of Gnarly Head’s 1924 line. If April seems too far away, be sure to visit their Waterford location which is on the Almond Blossom Cruise Route. Their fields will be open for self-guided tours. You won’t want to miss seeing the covered bridge surrounded by almond blossoms. Fun fact, Kim’s grandmother Mabel cut the ribbon on the covered bridge after it was built. It still stands, fully driveable, ready for your photos.

Don’t drink alcohol? Roberts Ferry has you covered with the most delicious shakes and root beer floats in the valley. Any flavor you can think of! Their milkshakes are famous-seriously you should have one. Or two. They have an amazing espresso

bar proudly serving Clayton’s Coffee. Can’t decide between a shake or a coffee: try an affogato-espresso poured over ice cream to get the best of both worlds. Or purchase a jar of “Yes Cocktail Co.!” no-alcohol mix to take home. Just add soda instead of vodka, and some ice and BAM you have a mocktail! The Lavender Honey is *chef’s kiss*. Order a take and bake lasagna or mac ‘n cheese for your next date night, and #tasteofoakdale from the comfort of your own home.

We hope to catch you sipping a mimosa or milkshake soon. To purchase tickets to any events mentioned above, visit their website below. Tag your photos #modestoview and sip on, friends!

CWB Celebrate 35 Years

A superb 35th Anniversary Gala featuring a new ballet with live original music by composer Dale Trumbore, the Los Angeles-based composer, and writer whose music has been praised by The New York Times for its “soaring melodies and beguiling harmonies.” Trumbore is teaming up with Artistic Director René Daveluy to create a profound new work. Add to this the best of Central West Ballet’s repertoire, and you have a spectacular evening full of surprises! Celebrate a magical 35 years at Gallo Center for the Arts on March 11th at 7:30 pm. $35 online or at the Gallo Center Box Office.

The State Theatre Battle of the Bands voting has ended (unfortunately, not until after the View went to print) but you can and should support this event and all the bands by buying a ticket and checking out the 8 finalists performing on Saturday, March 18th. Last year’s epic event sold out, and we hope for a repeat this year. Comedians, get ready to bring your A-game, your competition at the State American Laughitti, which will take place during Graffiti Summer. Both have a grand prize of $5000 and an audience choice award of $1500.

I wanted more insight into these events, so I asked the man behind these events and the President of the State Theatre, Sam Pierstorff, a few questions. What do you like to see from the bands who are performing? Do you have any advice to give the final 8?

SP: If I could give any advice to live show contestants, I would say to bring the energy. People want to hear great music, but a live performance should differ from simply playing a song. Crowds react to the enthusiasm of a performer, so I encourage any band on any stage to remember that we are watching you play! Give us a show, not just a song. This year we will be featuring short video introductions for each band, which will really help with the transitions on stage and will help us get to know the bands more intimately. We are also very thankful to Darin Morris at VMI Rocks for our

backline of amps and drums that help move the show along smoothly. We can’t wait to rock the State at the BOTB live show!

You have a Comedy Competition coming up in June, American Laughitti. What inspired you to create these events? What do you hope comes out of these events? How do you see them growing and creating a better entertainment scene in and around Modesto?

SP: We are huge fans of stand-up comedy, and the State Theatre is the perfect spot for comedians to perform. And all they need is a mic and a spotlight, so the technical aspects are minimal, but the entertainment aspects are massive! Comedy releases tension and scratches at hard truths that often people are too afraid to say out loud. Humor brings people together; through shared laughter, we better understand each other and our experiences.

This comedy event will be a springboard to more comedy shows in our more intimate setting at Intermission when construction is complete. We plan to have a monthly stand-up show and open mic culminating in this annual event.

Through American Laughiti and our BOTB, we are trying our best at the State Theatre to make Modesto a destination for great music and comedy! Why should LA and SF have all the fun!?

Rockabilly VIEW

Hillbilly Boogie to Psychobilly Stomp

A key component and root sound of Rockabilly and, in turn, Rock n’ Roll can be traced back to the Doghouse slap bass style of Fred Maddox. The Maddox Brothers and Rose started playing music in Modesto in 1937 and garnered crowds wherever they played. Bill Black, Elvis’s bassist, was a huge fan of Fred Maddox and taught himself how to play like Fred by pounding the crab out of the strings to make a beat and learning some fingering. He kept the percussive attack which cre ated a loud, distinct slapping style then it crudely became musi cal, influencing a million players that remain a sta ple in Rockabilly and, of course, Rock n’ Roll. Fred Maddox’s bass is displayed at the Experience Music Project in Seattle. “They wanted his bass because they believe he might have hit the first note of rock ‘n’ roll on it.”  The Maddox Brothers and Rose are part of Modesto and the World’s musical history. Learn more Modesto Music History at www.modestomusichistory.com

The ModestoView celebrates our ties to Rockabilly by sponsoring concerts and plans to create a yearly Rockabilly Luau at the Graffiti Car Museum. On Thursday, March 30th at 6 pm, come out to Ralston’s Goat for the next Rockabilly Cruise Night with America’s premier Psychobilly band, The Koffin Kats returning to the 209

almost a year to the day since they rocked Modesto.

Koffin Kats is a psychobilly trio from Detroit, Michigan. Fusing the swing of classic rockabilly with the hot-wired energy and ghoulish imagery of the Misfits, this band proves that high-octane psychobilly is still alive and kicking in the American midwest. Formed two decades ago in 2003 by lead singer and upright bassist Vic Victor and guitarist/ vocalist Tommy Koffin, who had been part of the Motor City punk scene for some time before trying their hands at the doom-struck twang of their punk-rockabilly fusion. “E-Balls” Walls performed with them in that first year, took a break and returned in 2007, and they have not slowed down. Releasing With eight full-lengths, a split, and 2 EPs, they have consistently put out new music and toured since they hit the road in 2004 to support their Self Titled debut.

Joining them on this run through the Westcoast is the high energy east coast punk band Crazy & the Brains, who has been compared to Rancid and the Ramones and features Ali Presses from Stop the Presses and Rude Girl Revue on the keyboard.

featuring pieces from classics like The Barber of Seville alongside more modern works including Sweeney Todd and West Side Story. It’s an exciting concert with high notes, laughter, and beautiful singing. Sunday, March 19 at 2pm. Tickets range from $20-$50. www. operamodesto.org.

Facing I Street between 11th and 12th Streets stands the former Stanislaus County Hall of Records, a longtime focal point of downtown located on the grounds of the Courthouse. Though it can appear to be an extension of the 1960 Courthouse complex, it actually predates the current courthouse by many years and marked significant investment in the Modesto area toward the end of the Great Depression. As progress on construction of the new Stanislaus Superior Courthouse continues, the community and civic leaders have a chance to re-commit to this significant local building with planning for long-term downtown redevelopment underway.

Completed in 1939, the Stanislaus County Hall of Records was celebrated by the Modesto Bee as an “ultra modern structure built for roominess and efficiency.” Completion was only made possible due to federal New Deal funds granted to the County, with federal dollars accounting for roughly one third of total construction costs. Built next to the original Victorian-era courthouse, it expanded record storage capacity and consolidated county administrative offices. When it opened to the public, the Hall of Records was home to the offices of the Board of Supervisors, Clerk, Recorder, Assessor, Auditor, Treasurer/Tax Collector, Superintendent of Schools, District Attorney, Surveyor, and Purchasing Agent. The Hall of Records was designed Russell

Guerne DeLappe

son of a well-established Modesto doctor who graduated from UC Berkeley and went on to become a prominent architect of civic and administrative buildings throughout California. The Hall of Records is one of only a few remaining sites in Modesto designed by DeLappe, and it has come to be lauded as the first International Style county building in the entire State. DeLappe’s intent with the design was to maximize utility over ornamentation, which is line with modernist architectural design and accounts for the rather imposingly modest façade.

The Hall of Records is a physical connection to Modesto’s earlier years and is an architectural jewel that adds immense value to the story of our City and County. Designed by a Modesto native, this structure deserves a new lease on life as court operations eventually consolidate and move to their new 10th Street home.

With the completion of the new Stanislaus Superior Courthouse expected in the next two years, the opportunity for Modesto to preserve and repurpose this historic property in the heart of Downtown must be seriously considered as we aim to create a vibrant Downtown where Modesto’s heritage meets future needs. To learn further about the Hall of Records, you can visit the Modesto Art Museum’s website to read more!

The ongoing Songlines series I’m hosting is like the global tasting menu featured on ‘Somebody Feed Phil,’ a food documentary show my sister introduced me to. Thus far, we’ve showcased music from Turkey and Canada, and this month we move on to the majestic country of Scotland, which is #1 on my travel wishlist. Philomena Iorns is a young lady and fellow Scot I know through various Opera Modesto concerts. Her grand debut as the leading lady will highlight traditional songs from Scotland and the British Isles. Joining Philomena are fellow OM singers Michael Balerite & Abner Arias, with Margaret Zabel on piano. Doors open at 7pm on Saturday, March 11, and Philomena & friends take the stage at 7:30. This type of showcase is among the most enriching that Modesto Unplugged facilitates. So capture this historic concert in your live feed to share with your friends and help them get wise to this fantastic series at Modesto’s most extraordinary working art studio. $15 cash admission includes refreshments. You’ll find The Dragonfly Art For Life at 1210 J St. Opera Modesto serves up another Sunday matinee at the Mistlin Gallery the following weekend. Soprano Alicia Hurtado and tenor Max Hosmer team up for a recital titled ‘High C’s, Soldiers and Sondheim,’

My best friend’s father played drums for Janis Joplin in her early Big Brother & The Holding Company band. Imagine my surprise when I saw this nearly sixty-year-old group on the State Theatre’s calendar. Dave Getz (my friend Alzara’s dad) is still keeping the beat with them, and I wouldn’t dream of missing this Modesto appearance. The Holding Co. brings its SF rock style to town on Saturday, April 1, at 7pm. Meet-and-greet tickets run $100; other seating costs $35 to $60. www. thestate.org.

Still to come in my Unplugged programming during the first half of 2023: an evening with masterful harpist, composer & (occasionally) vocalist Amelia Romano, the only performer who ever directly inspired me to take an instrument class, and a matinee cabaret showcase with an ensemble from Italy playing some unusual instruments. Stay tuned for announcements on these unique and fantastic showcases.  Intimate performances. Infinite playlist. MODESTO UNPLUGGED. www.modestounplugged.com.

FOOD VIEW

Chef’s of New York

In 2007, a small restaurant opened on Oakdale Rd with amazing rich flavors. Vinny Altadonna and his daughter Kim opened a traditional authentic Italian restaurant. The food was delicious, with rich sauces inspired by Vinny’s mom, Emilia Galati Altadonna,  Her recipes, the thin crust New York Boardwalk style pizzas, rich marinaras, zesty picattas and so much more.  This place caught the attention of many here in our area and developed a solid following.

Well folks, if you miss that special experience, it’s back and it’s downtown.  There is a new chapter opening for Chefs of New York, located on 13th St in downtown Modesto.  It is a great time for downtown dining with new creative and fresh offerings.  This time, Vinny and Kim are back running the kitchen, making the sauces, the pastas, the cannolis, the knotted bread and so much more. If you are a fan on New York’s Little Italy on Mulberry St, this is the place for you, with a warm friendly greeting from Vinnie, friendly prompt service from his staff with long time server Terri returning and Anna running the bar.

What’s different this time as that there is a new business partner, Jay Singh.  Jay had been a regular at the bar previously and had become friends.  When Chefs closed last year, he reached out to Vinny and Clay Rossen and asked how they could bring it back.   Jay has a long history in the hospitality business, working for Renaissance and Marriot hotels.  His family is in the hospitality business running a bay area limousine company. Now he is all charged up to make Chefs of New York a destination restaurant, helping Vinnie and Kim and the kitchen team lead by Rafael and Juan, make wonderful Italian food with the magic touch of the traditional recipes.   Each of the staff has their favorites and they are not shy about recommending something they like.  In the photograph, Kim is holding the Baked Ziti Siciliana, Jay is enjoying the dun-dried tomato chicken and Vinny has his shrimp and pesto pasta.

Everything at Chefs is fresh, the meatballs are hand made, from the pasta to the sauces, the salads.  They have an amazing fish and chips, delicious calamari steak and the lasagna well feed the heartiest of appetites.

For the early risers, Chefs has become a go-to spot for breakfast as they open at 8 am.   I am a regular for breakfast on the weekends with my grandson, and the silver dollar pancakes, the ricotta pancakes, fresh bagel sandwiches, ebelskivers with fresh jam and the large portion breakfasts that bring back the legendary Sundial, for those of you that go back.   Breakfast is served daily, the bar is open from mornings through the late night hours.

the coolest things about Chefs is the alley. Many times this is used for overflow dining, but recently there have been weddings and events in the alley, but you can expect to see a new bar entrance for afterhours. Anna Collord is managing the bar and she brings many years of experience to Chefs, from the standards to some new fun flavors and custom shots.  With an Italian dinner, sometimes you just want a perfect martini.

You will enjoy this new experience. Vinny’s mom passed away in 2021 at the age of 100, but her recipes live on in the hands of her son and granddaughter Kim.  Take time to explore the menu and try something new.   Oh yeah, bring your appetite and get ready to enjoy.

Liz Robbins

Book signing

Legendary climbers Liz and Royal Robbins spent most of their time enjoying the wonders of Yosemite Valley from their home base here in Modesto. They lived and breathed adventure, with Royal as a Camp 4 regular and international climber and Liz as the first woman to ever climb Half Dome. Whatever they did, “...it was always unconventional,” says Liz—which also applied to the sub-par clothing they owned during their initial iconic climbs together.

Liz and Royal started selling what they knew, which evolved into versatile outdoor apparel and their business continued to grow with the goal always being to create functional, durable, and stylish products with a lower impact on the planet.

The brand re-released Royal Robbins’s series of autobiographies in a 3-volume booklet. Visit the Modesto store from 12-2 p.m. March 18 to meet Liz Robbins for a book signing—and enjoy refreshments, enter to win a free giveaway, and get a pair of socks with a purchase of $100 or more (while supplies last).  You can feel the spirit of Royal and Liz in the local Royal Robbins store in McHenry Village and you can enjoy the spirit of Camp 4 and get amazing craft food and beverage from Royal’s son Damon.

INTERVIEW

On March 26th, thousands of runners, joggers, and walkers will participate in the Modesto Marathon, a fast and flat road race course designed for everyone from elite runners with goals of qualifying for the Boston Marathon to first-timers looking to conquer their first road race.

The Modesto Marathon raises money to support “Teens Run Modesto,” a program for valley students that includes goal setting, adult mentoring, and a structured training program.  This year’s Marathon theme is “Graffiti USA.”   In a unique collaboration with the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum, classic cars will line various areas of the race course, providing runners with colorful scenery as they compete.  Race medals, swag, and the Finish Line Festival will all feature nods to Modesto’s classic car culture and love for the nostalgia of the 50s and 60s.

This 5k, 10k, Half, and Full-Marathon event starts and ends in Downtown Modesto.  Course highlights include the tree-lined streets of the College area, Modesto’s Historic 99 Highway (9th Street), MJC West, and the surrounding countryside.    At the end of the race, the Finish Line Festival allows runners and spectators to dine, drink, and celebrate all they’ve accomplished.

This year’s Finish Line Festival includes various Food Truck options, including Paul’s Rustic Oven, Flip N Fry, Hungry Soul, and Pina Coco Shaved Ice.  Blaker Brewing will be on tap as spectators and runners toast the day’s victories.

The Modesto Marathon has a new Race Director, Bree Fitzpatrick.  While Bree may be new to her role as Race Director, she’s a long-time member of the Shadowchase running club, and the Modesto Marathon is familiar terrain.  Over the past six months, Bree has worked diligently to coordinate all the moving parts that come with planning an event of this scale.  Bree’s passion and desire to ensure the Modesto Marathon continues is inspiring.  I’ve had the opportunity to listen to Bree talk to would-be racers as they contemplate whether they have what it takes to compete in a road race.  Her encouraging and supportive spirit is incredible and provides almost anyone with the confidence they need to believe “it can be done.”

Let’s get to know Bree Fitzpatrick and provide would-be Marathon participants with the motivation to make it from spectator to runner:

Bree Fitzpatrick:

Modesto Marathon Flat and Fast

MV: The Modesto Marathon is only a few weeks away!  What are you most excited about?

BF: I look forward to watching it all come together and seeing the tears of joy on the participants’ faces when they cross the finish line.  Of course, putting on a marathon is a considerable undertaking; it takes a village to succeed.  But, then, when the dust settles, Modesto Marathon has the honor of giving back by donating its proceeds to Teens Run Modesto.

MV: The Marathon has partnered with Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum, utilizing their logo on this year’s medal.  What inspired you to incorporate the Graffiti Classic Car theme into your event?  And what can runners expect from this partnership?

Modesto View: Briefly introduce yourself, your professional role, and your history with Shadowchase Running Club?

Bree Fitzpatrick: My name is Bree Fitzpatrick; by day, I am a Medical Assistant at Sutter Gould Medical Foundation, and at night I am in school to get my BA in psychology.  When I first started, I had never heard of ShadowChase running club, that is, until my daughter joined Teens Run Modesto in 2013.  Then, in 2016 I was approached by Mike Mason, who asked me to run with the training group as a mentor.  That was the year it all started.  Shortly after training as a mentor, I became a certified coach, and the rest is history.

MV: What led you to take the reins as the Modesto Marathon Race Director?

BF: Since I started in 2013, I have been actively participating in activities put on by ShadowChase.  I have been in the 4th of July parade, helped with the Jingle Bell run, the memorial classic, and the riverbank run for cheese, and volunteered for the Modesto marathon, which made me love Shadowchase more.  So, when I heard that we might not have the Modesto Marathon because we didn’t have a race director, I was sad to think we might lose the race.  But, after lengthy talks with several people, I thought if no one else would step up, why not me?

MV: Do you have personal experience as a Marathon participant?

BF: I ran the half marathon my first year and then did the full Marathon the following year.  It’s a great course because it is flat and fast with only one hill.  We lovingly call the 9th street hill up to the Briggsmore overpass “Mt. Modesto.”

MV: Who do you hope to attract to your event?

BF: I want to attract families.  I want this to be an activity that people look forward to doing as a family.  So optimistically, it will grow into a passion, and they will come back year after year and challenge themselves to do longer distances.  Not everyone can be an elite athlete, but anyone can walk or run a marathon.

MV: Do you have any advice for people who haven’t registered yet or may be on the fence?

BF: First, I would remind them that we have more distances than just the Marathon (26.2 miles).  We do have a half marathon (13.1 miles), a 10K (6.2 miles), and a 5K (3.1 miles).  We pride ourselves on having a distance for everyone.  Secondly, I hear this all the time when I talk about the marathon “oh, I’m not a runner,” and to that, I say, you don’t have to be a runner to walk.  Lastly, bet on yourself and see what you can do; if you already know you can walk/run the 3-mile, challenge yourself to do the 10K.  Running or walking will always be challenging, but this is definitely one race you don’t want to miss.

MV:  How will this year’s Marathon differ from past years?

BF: This year, we are adding new ideas, including our Graffiti Classic Cars theme.  We also plan to have classic cars to look at as you run and a “diner feel” at the finish line.  Blaker Brewery is also debuting their recovery beer at our race, not to mention we will have a variety of food trucks to choose from following your race.

BF: The idea of partnering with the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum came about while I was on a run with the training team.  It was a perfect idea, and ideal timing, as the Grafitti USA Classic Car museum had just opened.  It incorporates the history of Modesto and showcases an era for people who may not know the history of their town.  This way, they can see the cars, hear the music, and feel like they are part of Modesto’s rich and diverse history.

MV: How can people in our community get involved or help support this event?

BF: We would love to have the community involved.  There are plenty of sponsorship opportunities and volunteer opportunities throughout the course.  Or, if they live along the route, they can cheer the runners on from their front porches!  Alternatively, if you have a classic car and want to showcase it, we would love to have you join the line-up.

MV: Planning an event of this magnitude must be challenging!  Who are you thankful for (sponsors, volunteers, etc.)?

BF: First, I will thank ShadowChase running club for believing in me to take on this race!  Next, I will thank my family, who have helped tremendously.  Then on to our sponsors, we appreciate any donation we get, whether that be monetary or physical; we could not do it without you.  Finally, I will thank Memorial Medical Center for its generous donation and continued support. MV: Final Thoughts?

BF: Be your biggest advocate, bet on yourself, and we will see you at the starting line!

MV: Last but not least, Rolling Stones or Beatles?

BF: While I enjoy both bands, the Beatles have more songs I like.  Starting with “Hey Jude”, “Let It Be” and “Here Comes the Sun”, but my favorite is “Yellow Submarine”.

Walk the Cruise Route!

The green is showing up and blowing up all over our region. It’s not just for the luck of the Irish, it is for all of us!   Just days ago we had snow covered foothills and water everywhere. This should set the stage for an amazing spring that starts on Monday the 20th.  For sure spring will be springing and there is so much to squeeze into these 31 days.  So put down your video game and VR goggles and lace up your runners or hikers and make this month count

You can learn all about Modesto history and our classic car and rock and roll heritage in one simple walking tour. Head to 10th St Plaza where a 25 station walking tour begins on the Modesto Historic Cruise Route and the Legends of the Cruise Walk of Fame.  Yes, this is where it was all happening when George Lucas was in high school and what he presented to the world in the film American Graffiti. It was all based on the stories, places and people that cruised along 10th and 11th St back in 1962.

Go Run a Marathon

One of the most fun things to do is ride, walk or run the trail system here in Modesto. We have the Hetch Hetchy running under the power lines, the 4.2 mile Virginia Corridor running down the former Tidewater Central Railroad, and the 8.6 mile Mensinger Trail along Dry Creek from downtown to Claus Rd.  There are so many places to start and stop.  The Mensinger trail has many side trails where you can do some exploring. There are eateries along the

The Modesto Marathon is here and it’s time to rev your engines – literally! The Modesto Marathon is back and will take place on Sunday March 26th this year partnering with the Graffiti USA Museum to provide a classic car twist on the event. The course is known for being “flat and fast” with runners traveling from “downtown to the historic, treelined college neighborhoods. After passing the Modesto Junior College west campus, they head into the countryside viewing the beautiful Diablo Mountain Range and passing the San Joaquin River National Wildlife Refuge.” On the way back into town, runners will pass the Graffiti USA Museum for the final sprint to the finish. Make sure to learn more and register at www.ModestoMarathon. com and check out the Graffiti USA Museum for the Marathon Expo to pick up your packets on Saturday March 25th from 9 AM to 5 PM. You’ll get a sneak preview of the museum and be able to see the vision for bringing the days of the cruise back to life all while getting everything you need to conquer the course. Vroom vroom, Modesto, and good luck in the race!

AJ Mitchell

When the Modesto Marathon starts on the 26th, make sure you look for AJ Mitchell. Since 2014, AJ has been getting faster each year and leads out the pack.  This will be his 15th marathon and he is looking to post a sub 2:30 time for the 26.2 miles. AJ was born with Spinal Bifida and has been working hard to keep up with everyone his entire life, even back when there were not as many programs available as there are today. It is amazing to see his strength and endurance and the great support of our community and the Mitchell family.  GO AJ and good luck to all of the racers.

Go Climb a Rock

One of the all time great t-shirts comes from Yosemite Mountaineering School.  “Go Climb a Rock” is one of the all time great slogans, and even made a James T Kirk appearance. The real reason this is so cool is that Modesto is home base for the late legendary climber Royal Robbins. His legend lives on in the mountains of Yosemite and here in our community.  A quick bike ride or walk to Camp 4 to see the Royal Robbins mural and will get you in the mood and a 2 hour drive will plant you at  the base of some of the most beautiful granite walls in the world.   Spend your day scrambling the rocks of Indian Caves, below the waterfalls or if you are really a pro, ascend the sheer walls in the spirit of Royal, Chuck Pratt and Tom Frost who scaled the Salathe Wall in 1961.  Royal’s wife and climbing partner Liz will be signing copies of Royal’s book this month at the Royal Robbins store on March 18.

EYE ON MODESTO HIP HOP CULTURE

“Hey Fly Guy!”

If you have taken a walk in Downtown Modesto on First Friday from April to October, you might have came across a graffiti artist painting small signs with some really detailed flies, mushroom, and other insects. We caught up with Scott Aka “The Fly Lord”, and asked him a bit about his bug collection.

1.  So you’re the guy that paints insects at DOMO?

Yes! I am the local bug guy. HA!

2.  What made you start painting insects?

It was early in my developmental stage as an artist. I was spending a lot of time in San Francisco with friends, one of which was a big inspiration, Robert Bowen @bowenstuff, an artist that makes whimsical paintings of insects with mechanical body parts. My first insect painting was a giant fly, and thus became “The Fly Lord”.

3.  Is it difficult to paint on such small signs?

Yes. I would say so. The smaller the sign, the more difficult it can become, especially when taking on more detailed insects or other various subjects. I love to paint realistic things, such as flowers, mushrooms, and frogs.

4. Is this what you do for a living?

Among other things. I have am a full time artist. I am a tattooer, muralist, and canvas artist. I am always looking to add new skillsets.

5.  Do you have any cool murals in Modesto I could check out?

There are a couple places in town where you can catch a glimpse of my works. Best Pest on College and Stoddard.  There you can see some great examples of larger scale bugs I had painted with a buddy of mine. That location is across from Modesto Junior Collage East Campus. Another favorite of mine would be  the dinosaur mural on the side of Tangled

T’s Hair Salon on Kimble and Downey. Lastly, theres a rad locomotive I had the honor of painting on the front of Gianelli and Nielsen Law Office near Five Points. You might stumble across some of my other work in alleyways down McHenry Ave as well.

6. If I wanted to purchase a sign, get a tattoo done, or have you paint a larger scale painting, how does one get ahold of you?

Decades after my Grandmother Lorenza Rombout, aka “Little Grandma,” passed away, an interesting narrative of her social life came to light. One of my maternal aunts unabashedly spoke of my Grandma working in a cantina as an entertainer. My Grandma had a mischievous grin and a way that she would side wink at you when giving a cautionary tale of boys and parties or insinuating that Loretta and Conway, indeed, must have something going on. I could see that in today’s world, she might be the type that would have a small group of friends who would enjoy karaoke and a Salty Dog. I remember her love of Country music and how she had her hair set. I can still smell her setting powder and have never been able to pull off that rouge-peony shade that she put on her lips from the gold metal tube. I am grateful daily for the stories she left behind for us of having drinks with Merle Haggard and the nights of “Honky Tonky” she would enjoy with her Comadre. I see those parts of her in my Mother, especially in my Sisters and I. We have never been shrinking violets regarding social events and live music.

My Grandma gave me Hank Williams Sr. during my egg, spam, and frijole breakfast, served with a little bit of orange juice in a tiny shrimp cocktail glass. She would let me pick the stack of vinyl to be played on the big stereo console in the dining room. The talks we had evolved with my growing up but always included details about her. She was a single Mom with seven children who worked back-breaking hours at a job in the cannery for decades and physiologically had the proof to show for it. My Little Grandma did not whine about her past. She just gave

Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories

and gave; hers was an open house. She kept her family fed and everyone else’s tooneighbors, friends, kids of friends. The heart for giving and stewardship was passed on to my Mama and me, and I try to make my ancestors proud.  My Grandma sure had a thing for Merle. This month is Women’s History month. There are many ways you can observe this time and celebrate women in your family and at your workplace. Consciously support womenowned businesses. Help your female colleagues find balance. Host an event to celebrate women. Understand that

Transwomen are women. Set up a teambuilding event. Support a woman’s nonprofit. Post and repost on social media to spread awareness of Women’s History Month. Be aware of the issues women still face today. Until everyone demands that women artists be booked equally as event participants, females will continue to be overlooked, paid less, and ghosted. Workplace inequality in the local music scene is a perpetual reality.  Underrepresentation is pervasive and unnecessary. Both subtle and overt misogyny from bookers, sound engineers, and some male peers exists. Like a broken record, I will continue discussing this and working toward reform until it changes substantially. It is up to you.  Put your efforts beyond retweets and putting men on the defensive.  Have conversations. Do not accept that- “It is what it is.” I understand that it’s not that there is no awareness. I don’t think anyone was keeping a tally as I have been.  BOOK MORE WOMEN. Check out the calendar of events for a lineup of female and non-binary artists at shows near you. Thank you for your support.

Modesto High School IB Program: Making College Attainable and Manageable

four-year university? The IB Program may be just what you are looking for!

My name is Abigail Murphy Power and I am a proud fourth generation graduate of Modesto High School. I’m also happy to share that I am also a proud IB Diploma Graduate of Modesto High School, Class of 2013. I can honestly say that I have this program to single-handedly thank for both my preparedness for the curriculum at the University of California, Berkeley and now for handling complex dilemmas in daily business as a working professional. The International Baccalaureate Program is the most in-depth, comprehensive program that high school students can take to prepare for their academic future and it’s available for free at Modesto High School, the oldest and most established high school in our city. Do you tolerate school, but don’t love critical reading or in-depth research? The IB Program might not be your cup of tea and that’s ok! Do you love to read, research, critical think and have the hopes of attending a

The IB Program encourages foreign language, diverse studies of mathematics, and methods of art through their four-year freshman to senior year curriculum. The Modesto High School IB Program is reaching out to interested 7th and 8th grade students (even current high school students!) who would like to enroll or learn more about the opportunities of taking International Baccalaureate courses. The IB Program is similar to AP classes offered in other schools in that there are year-end tests and college credits given, however, the IB Program is internationally recognized and purposefully structures all classes at a college level to prepare students to enter university with the skills needed to tackle graduate theses, foreign language fluency, long form testing structures, and complex scientific and mathematic problems through its strict schedule. As a graduate of this program, I cannot recommend the IB Program enough. It can be challenging, but it’s tenfold more rewarding, fun, and engaging than you could imagine. Graduating from UC Berkeley was manageable, attainable, and an exploratory, engaging experience because of the tools that the IB Program and even more so it’s incredible teachers gave me during my years at Modesto High School.

The deadline to enroll in the 2023-2024 school year is March 16th 2023! Please submit an application at https://mhsib. mcs4kids.com to confirm your interest or reach out to castellani.k@monet.k12.ca.us with questions or for additional information.

It’s Spring show performance March 10 & 11.  The show is a comedy oneact play with musical numbers for the first act and then the second act will be a tribute to Downey’s Theatre Heritage.  This will be an exciting event as many alumni will come and be a part of the celebration.  We are familiar with stars like Jeremy Renner and Tim Olyphant, but there are many others that went on to not only act, but produce, cast and build the world of theatre like Robert Ulrich.

One of Downey’s illustrious alumni is Paul Lambert, Class of 69.  Paul has gone on from those wonderful days to have a career in producing musical theater on Broadway and around the world.  Paul remembers, “I will always be grateful for the inspiration and connection to the arts at Downey and the entire Modesto HS musical community — as each year we Modesto High, Davis, and downey music departments cane together and did a city wide project”.   One year it was with Carmen Dragon (https:// www.kennedy-center.org/artists/d/do-dz/ carmen-dragon2/) and another year with Jester Harrison (https://genius.com/artists/ Jester-hairston).

Life happens, and unfortunately, so do injuries. Due to an injury, I couldn’t run without discomfort and pain. No matter. If you can’t run, you jog. If you can’t jog, you walk. In my case, I switched my running shoes to my walking shoes. Honestly, I thought that if I didn’t run, I would start to lose the ability to maintain my weight/ build or even gain some weight. WOW, was I wrong!  Walking helped me keep and may have helped me lose a pound or two. Of course, adjusting my caloric intake per walking instead of running also played a big part. Even though my injuries were bothersome, I could still get moving. Walking wasn’t nearly as hard as running on my joints. Too much running can harm your overall joint and knee health over time. As we age, everything ages with us. It’s part of life, no big deal. Even though I enjoy

running, walking was just as or maybe more beneficial to my fitness mind, body, and soul. I’m not saying to stop running. I only want you to know it is ok to go with the flow. If you feel like running, run. If you feel like walking, walk. Either one gives you free fitness. Who doesn’t like free?  No Gym to join. No fees to pay. Not a bunch of expensive equipment to buy. No, you won’t get a T-Shirt for walking on a given day, nor a goodie bag filled with useless stuff you’ll throw away.  You will get the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle while keeping a few more of your hard-earned bucks. Perhaps after so many years of racing, I’ve become wiser. Maintaining and living a healthier lifestyle comes with practice. So keep at it whatever you do, and never give up. Experience matters. Cheers to your health!

Hey Modesto! I hope you are all doing well. It is March, which means the Modesto marathon is coming up. This event will be taking place on March 26th. Proceeds go to the “Teens run Modesto” program. This is a wonderful program for teens, specifically ones at risk, that provides amazing character development skills and helps teens work on their physical fitness. If you’re not interested in running a marathon, sign up for the 5k race! If you’re not interested in the act of running at all, you can be a great help to our community by volunteering!

We need help with pre-race preparation,

course marshals, working at the finish line, entertainment, cleaning up, massage therapists, or even registration. This is a wonderful cause, and it’s a great way to get involved with the amazing community we have here in Modesto. The race begins at 7 am located downtown at the intersection of 11th and M streets. Everyone will be there! If you’re interested, you can sign up online at Modestomarathon.com!

The Art of Archery

I have heard from a few sources that Archery is coming to Modesto.

Apparently a couple of fields have been picked out that would be appropriate and safe to learn and practice Archery, for beginners as well as more advanced skill levels. There’s a famous book written on Archery, called “Zen in the Art of Archery”by Eugen Herrigel,  a German professor who taught philosophy at the University of Tokyo. He was deeply involved himself in the exploration of the theory and practice of Zen Buddhism. He had become a devoted student training intensively with a Zen Master for several years. His book “Zen in the Art of Archery” is an account of this experience. The book was published in 1953 and since then has become a classic for many people interested in Zen while also giving insight into the often seemingly obscure Eastern experience.

Herrigel studied Archery in order to discover what Zen was all about. Here is a quote from the introduction to his book

written by Suzuki, a Buddhist monk, essayist, religious scholar, translator and writer. He  was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1963.

“In the case of archery, the hitter and the hit are no longer opposing objects, but are one reality. The archer ceases to be conscious of himself as the one who is engaged in hitting the bull’s eye which confronts him.”

It is quite impressive that Archery has always been part of the Olympics. The USA Archery for Youth and Adults have been promoting Archery as a sport for the Olympics. That’s why Archery has become popular in public recreation programs. Archery helps to improve concentration and good posture, teaches being in the moment,  promotes calmness and a strong mind. And it’s fun too.  Be on the look out  :  Archery Classes are coming to the Modesto area soon.

Everyone loves a good dive bar. And why not? They are typically loaded with locals and stick to the main business of a bar without some of the whistles and bells that the “trendy” places have. One thing is for sure, the beer is cold and the cocktails are in your favor. We checked these gems out, and think you should too, Nino’s, way out McHenry, Vierra’s in McHenry Vil- lage, June Bugs just off Yosemite, Twin River Saloon Maze Blvd (great on your way home from the Bay) and White Elephant on Standiford

Warm Blood

Inhabiting the fringes of Modesto, California, in the toxic haze of the 1980s, WARMBLOOD is a politically subversive, searing collage of sound, narrative, documentary, and trash B movie meta-narratives, hand stitched by filmmaker Rick Charnoski in his debut feature. Shot on 16mmfilm by renowned cinematographer Christopher Blauvelt (First Cow, Emma, Night Moves.) WARM BLOOD weaves jagged textures of old photos, scrawled letters found in the trash, interviews done in the midnight gloom under bridges, fake news broadcasts, and random audio samples together like a freaky quilt. An inverted vision of two lost souls shot in the same town as George Lucas‘ AMERICAN GRAFFITI- A distress flare of a film shot into the night sky. A kaleidoscopic hitchhiker’s guide to the underbelly of America. Screening at the State Theatre, Thursday, March 23rd, 7 pm $5 online or at the box office
