EDITOR’S Our two UC Berkeley Golden Bears Abbey and Madison
Greetings Modesto Fans: This is a very special issue for me. One reason is a tale of musical discovery that makes me more excited to live in Modesto than ever. The other is a coming of age story of sorts, signaling the completion of a goal I set when I moved back to Modesto in 1996 after leaving in ’84. After living in Seattle, the Bay Area and working all over the world, I made it my mission to make living here interesting and to find the good things about our community. I wanted my daughters and my family to enjoy this place we call home. That is the reason that I, with a few friends, started ModestoView back in 1997. I wanted my girls to love their community, get involved and encourage people to all work together and make this a better place. In that mission, I have succeeded. It is bittersweet now as my youngest daughter Abbey, ModestoView All Ages Editor, graduates from Modesto High like her older sister Madison did 6 years earlier. She prepares to start a new life at UC Berkeley, one of the top universities in the world, as did her sister. These girls worked so hard, gave so much and kept their goals in mind. I am so very proud. There is a big group of family and friends that we have all grown up with and now they move on. Now it is up to us. Are we going to continue to work hard to make our city better? Create more culture? Create more jobs so that more kids may consider coming back and building their lives here? That must be our next goal. ModestoView is here to help continue this mission of promoting a vibrant and interesting place for people to raise a family, live, work with a sense of pride. Our mission is simple here at ModestoView, we serve Civic Pride Daily, since 1997. The other reason: Every once in a while you make an amazing discovery. A discovery that was not that hard to find, but like a Picasso sitting in your aunts attic, but we have one of those moments now. I have spent the last two years digging through our American Graffiti, cultural and musical past. The amazing thing I discovered is that Modesto USA is the birthplace of Rock and Roll Music. Yes THE Rock and Roll. There are people here in town that witnessed the birth of Rock and Roll. How can this possibly be you wonder? I am as amazed as you, so read our exiting history story on Page 16 as you meet Don Maddox. We have some amazing dedicated writers, photographers and contributors that believe in a common mission. Let’s change the way the world looks at Modesto! Because of these amazing people we can present you with a View of Modesto that we can be proud showing the world. And to our amazing advertisers, we could not design, print and deliver ModestoView Magazine and ModestoView.com to the community each month. Every single writer and advertiser is amazing and my unending thanks to all of you and I appreciate you all daily. Thanks to you, this mission of Serving Civic Pride Daily will continue, grow, thrived and reach more people each month. Together we will be the change we want. Deepest thanks to all of you that have been there from the beginning and are still here today

Yes underneath that amazing neon, is our very own 10th St, our Historic Cruise Route and home to many of the old clubs and places were our musical history was born. It has been weeks since I last sat down and wrote an article. I used to pump out thousands and thousands of words every single day but lately I have been focusing more on social media and that takes more time than anyone might imagine. It feels good to have my fingers on the keys again. I am sitting here thinking about the fact that May is just a few days away and that boggles my mind a bit. I swear that my life is on fast-forward lately. Days seem to just fly by. Nights seem to just fade into memories. I am really looking forward to the next few months in good-old Modesto. Living right on the parade route is pretty sweet and helps me enjoy events when the heat is blazing. Heat and I don’t get along. In many ways I am like an old car. I can go and go, but if I don’t get enough water, I just sort of sputter out and quit moving. My doctors should start emailing me their annual warnings soon. My body will start to get tired faster. But hey, I’m alive! That’s the key. That makes me happy. May will be fun In Modesto and it will keep me on my toes and as busy as ever. American Roots artist Pokey LaFarge is scheduled to perform at the Fat Cat on May 11th, Dwight Yoakam will bring his ‘Guitars and Cadillacs’ to the Gallo Center for the Arts on May 25th and the summer movie season will kick-off on May 3rd when Brenden Theatres welcomes Iron Man onto its largest screens. Those events and more can be found on our event calendar at modestoview.com. In personal news, I am still working toward the goal that I mentioned last month of publishing a book of local images. Like my projects and ideas always seem to, that goal has morphed into an adventure of epic proportions. I am about to launch a website to sell my prints called Buddha Street Urban Art (to earn the money to publish the book) and that has made me want to get out and shoot as much as possible. I need to be careful however so I don’t get hurt trying to create my crazy brand of art.
History of Rock and Roll Roots
Yesterday, my trusty partner in crime and I adventured out to take some shots of an abandoned building and we ended up in a small scary attic with an unhappy bat. Have you ever seen a fat guy try to navigate stairs while screaming things like, “My girlfriend is going to kill me if I get rabies!” and “Run! Run for all that is holy!” It was hilarious. That fiasco would have made an amazing YouTube video. Bottom line here- Don’t wake up bats. They bite and foaming at the mouth is not at all attractive. If you need a better visual example of what I just described, hit up the Farmer’s Market
this week and buy an odd-shaped potato. Let that potato roll down a flight of stairs. That is pretty much what the scene developed into. It wasn’t pretty. Have a fantastic May in Modesto. Plant a garden. Eat some tasty fruit. Find somewhere to sit and watch a river roll by. Share a sundae at Loard’s downtown with the one person that you love the most. Sit and watch tiny kids learn to play baseball. Live the American dream. Be thankful for health and happiness. Feel free me to email me at r.porras@ me.com for any reason at all. I know some awesome recipes and I can hook you up

Spring Shows
May opens with two juried Spring Shows opening May 4. In Modesto, the 60th annual Central California Art Association Spring Show, opens with a Gala artist and award Gala event, with silent auction, raffle and presentations at the Mistlin Gallery. The Spring Show Gala costs $20 and supports the CCAA/Mistlin Gallery. After the Gala, the show is free to view during regular gallery hours and Art Walk until June 13. The other juried Spring Show, is the Annual Carnegie Arts Center exhibition in Turlock, that also opens May 4. That show will be open through June 30. The following day, drop in at Congregation Beth Shalom for great food, music and art for Café Shalom event. My friend Eli Lester talked me into this fun event again this year. Cinco de Mayo event undoubtedly happening that day, but I don’t have information on that for the visual arts. Shout out to my friend, artist Greg Carrillo that his health improving. The Family Justice Center has partnered the past couple years with local artists to raise awareness and fundraising for the Center’s mission through its “Art of Justice” program. Several pieces of art are still available for exhibit and for sale. 100% of the proceed from the sale of the art helps support the Stanislaus Family Justice Center’s, “Art Restores Kids” program and today we are 100% privately funded and staffed by all volunteers. For more information about these programs, to purchase art or make a donation, or find out how you can get involved, please contact Cindy on (209) 525-5134 or cschneider@stanislausfamilyjustice.org. May 16 is the date for Downtown Modesto Third Thursday Art Walk this month. I got caught up in the City Hall interactive event in 1010 Tenth street for April, so spent most of my time at Mistlin Gallery, Chartreuse Muse, Barkin Dog Grill. Chartreuse Muse is featuring Dean Decocker and James Deitz sculptures, drawings and paintings through May, and has an open call for artisans and crafters to submit works to be featured at the Muse. Bring in about 20 pieces of your work/creations to Chartreuse Muse or drop in for more information. They

are seeking unique items. The Muse is also holding classes, for children and adults, including life drawing every other Saturday. I spent some time talking to MJC faculty member and Artist Deborah Barr Brayman and viewing her featured Clowns at Barkin Dog Grill. Her works also featured this art walk at Building Imagination Center. I tried to go by the Gallery 909 student gallery for the BFA student Painting exhibition, but closed a bit early. June 1 and 2, join me at the Pick and Gather at Riverdance Farms in Livingston, at 123330 Livingston-Cressey Road. This agricultural festival is unique, with U-Pick organic cherries and blueberries, the Merced River Fair on Saturday. Music and art and dance by many familiar local musicians and artists, along with educational workshops. Call Cindy @ 209 761 0081, web at riverdancefarms.com for more information, or email me at mercenary_graphics@ yahoo.com Keep the date, July 27, for “The Romance of Old Habana/ Havana Focus Exhibit” gala at Martin G. You may think of May as a ‘meh’ month. Only boring people get bored, Modesto! Here are some May holidays you can use as an occasion to drink (extra points if you make up your own themed cocktail): National Hoagie Day, Save the Rhino Day, Clean Your Room Day, No Socks Day followed by Lost Sock Memorial Day, Learn about Composting Day, photographer Philip Johnson’s birthday, National Tap Dance Day, National Escargot Day, Fatigue Syndrome day, Lumpy Rug Day, Waiter and Waitress Day, Mother’s Day, Sun Screen Day, Beverage Day, Bird Day, Twilight Zone Day, International Tuba Day, Oyster Day, Eat What You Want Day, and -- ah, yes, and Cinco de Mayo, which is a relatively low-key holiday in honor of the Mexican Army’s fight for their freedom against the French during the 1862 Franco-American War. Cinco de Mayo is a relatively calm, quiet holiday, and is privately celebrated with sober reverence. You know I am totally messing with you. Last Cinco de Mayo I was asked by a reallife French Canadian, amid the downtown live music, drinking, dancing, and horse riding, if this sort of thing was an ‘usual Saturday night’ kind of thing in Modesto. The answer was no, but it should be yes. There’s nothing like a man in a sombrero
8
on a horse downtown late at night to make you question your sobriety. Cinco de Mayo is pretty much the only night of the entire year I’m willing to make it a tequila-only night, because I’m white as
hell and that stuff brings out the crazy. I am not a ‘shot girl’ very often, but somehow I always end up doing shots at the Tiki. This is likely because Tiki is an incredibly fun place to do shots. Actually, Tiki is a fun place for almost damn near anything -- birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, days of observance, etc, etc. Phil talked me out of doing a tequila shot article because he knows me and knows I would have likely ended up loosing one of my shoes; so instead we decided to do a Mexican flag-themed set up, with a tequila

shot in the middle for good measure. The lovely Michael LeRoy of the Tiki was so kind as to pour up some delicious red (vodka cran), white (Patron Silver), and green (apple martini) drinks that came together as a perfect Friday afternoon arrangement. Notable Tiki characteristics include an almost-always packed dance floor, live DJ Thursday through Saturday, indoor fire pit, smoke-friendly back patio, a sizable vodka selection, and attractive bartenders. My only complaint about Tiki is that damn black light at the entrance which always reminds me that I don’t lint-roll my jacket as well as I should. So celebrate May in style, ModestoView readers. Nearly every day is a damn holiday
during that month so you have no excuse. I highly recommend heading over to Tiki for a flag-themed lineup of cocktails. The red and green cocktails can also be applied to Star Wars Day (you know, the light saber colors?) just in case you head over to Tiki on the 4th instead. SOS Safari on Salad
FB: Dana’s Family Kitchen FOX40: See Chef Dana every 1st Friday of the month
May, the month that is synonymous with Mother’s Day has motivated me to go on a safari so to speak! A safari in search of salads that Moms (step-moms, grandmas, aunties, caregivers, and Mr. Mom!) do not have to make, shake, bake, or take anywhere! On this journey I found a bounty of tantalizing salads throughout all of Modesto. My adventure led me along many paths until I found my top three! To make this safari a bit more authentic, each restaurant has outdoor seating where I could bask in the sun and welcome a breeze while looking the part in cool sunglasses and a smile on my face. Alright, I’ve teased you all long enough…
First stop I paid a visit to my friends Carmen Sabatino and Russell St. Clair at the Mediterranean Market and Grill on McHenry. I was delighted with the brand new outdoor patio with sliding panel doors easily adjustable for customer’s comfort levels. I so look forward to dining there for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with the summer months practically here. The most popular salad on the menu is the Mediterranean Seafood Salad. Fresh, crisp romaine lettuce served with your choice of dressing and crowned with your favorite fish or fish of the day including: Shrimp, salmon, calamari, white albacore tuna, tilapia, and mahi mahi. So many choices for all of you, for me unfortunately I’m allergic to fish oil, so I enjoyed the same Dana~licious salad, but with grilled chicken breast instead. I paired it with a sassy white wine that also went well with the lip-licking hot garlic bread. Then Russell taunted me with his homemade pecan cake that would totally
10
defeat the purpose of me ordering a salad! It was also difficult to pass on the Italian Cream Sodas many patrons were indulging in! Next time! Second stop on 13th Street, Vito’s. I was greeted by another friend, owner, Ray Ashak. He immediately knew what salad I was hunting for, the Waldorf Chicken
tender Ben paired me perfect with a Stockholm 75 fruity martini that was truly refreshing with my dining experience. Again, I had to leave without caving into one of my biggest temptations, Vito’s multi layered chocolate cake that is beyond divine when paired with a rich glass of Boeger’s Barbera. A special note of gratitude to Ray and his beautiful wife May for being incredibly generous by offering a 10% discount to all city and county employees, too! My final stop was on Bangs near McHenry, Greens Table. It was most delightful to see the smiling face of yet another friend, owner, Ann Endsley. Ann has plenty to smile about as Greens Table is only in its first months of opening and it’s plenty busy. Greens Table and Greens Central (downtown on 10th St.) have a stellar reputation for local and sustainable “clean food”, no preservatives and no additives. There are
only two known restaurants in the USA that own and operate directly from their own organic farm, yes Greens is one of them! With that in mind I was feeling extra good knowing what I was about to put into my body, Chinese Chicken Salad! Lettuce, cabbage, snow peas, bell pepper, chicken breast, wonton strips, all dressed in incredible Asian vinaigrette! Bite after bite my mouth wanted to shout out “Lovely salad for me!” It kept getting better as I sipped on Greens signature green tea and this time I said yes to dessert! I just couldn’t take it anymore as that fresh and savvy strawberry mousse was calling me by name, “Dana~licious you know you want me!” There was only one way to make it stop! Happy Mother’s Day to all that share such an honorable title! Take a safari, you deserve it!
A Dana-licious Tip!
Salad for Dana~licious coming right up! I love this salad for many reasons. It is a NYC classic right here in Modesto. It has mixed greens, grilled chicken, seedless grapes, granny smith apples, caramelized walnuts, celery, and gorgonzola cheese, tossed with Dijon balsamic vinaigrette or bleu cheese dressing. Both dressings have amazing flavor so I just give a wink and request them both! Vito’s is well known for their addicting hot and soft breads that come with the salad. I was in the Martini mode and bar-

Graffiti Summer gets longer every year and
in fact, it is Graffiti Summer all year long here in Modesto USA. People from all over the world visit Modesto for our place in history as the home of American Graffiti. Who would have known that George Lucas’ film about cruising in Modesto would lead to Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark and so much more. Yes, we are that home town. 10th and 11th Streets were the place where the kids in the 50s and 60s spent their time. Fun, pranks, drive-ins, oil slicks, hanging out with friends and the occasional “Drag” between lights or out on a deserted road. Graffiti Summer has now become part of who we are. Our own residents are the reason the American Graffiti story was told. This year is something very special. Modesto hometown hero George Lucas will be the Grand Marshall of the North Modesto Kiwanis Club American Graffiti Car Show Cruise Parade on June 7. Nearly 1000 classic cars will “cruise” downtown Modesto, lead out by George Lucas. George will be inducted into the Modesto Cruise Route Walk of Fame as a “Legend of the Cruise” This will be an amazing event and is the first chance for the citizens of Modesto can recognize George Lucas for his amazing accomplishments. Parade starts at 7, ceremony at 10th and I begins at 6:30. You can take a walk through history and learn about the City of Modesto, the Legends of the Cruise, George Lucas History, the old music, first rock bands, the radio stations and the nightclubs of the day. Walk 10th St today and go back in time. Just watch what 10th St can become, all decked out in retro style and art. www. modestocruiseroute.com School will be out so better start planning your summer around these really important events.

A La Lune – Reggae/ Roots Formed in ’07 by bassist/ vocalist Joseph Mier A La Lune has quite an impressive track record. They have shared stage with many international reggae artists and bands such as Pato Banton, Natural Vibrations, Ooklah the Moc, Luv Fyah, Soul Majestic, and Hip Hop’s Zion I & Aesop. Mier describes the band as “modern roots” also believes that they are set apart from other reggae bands due to their sound effects and old school feel. He is excited to play with Natural Vibrations again on June 6th at Fat Cat saying “I’m excited for this show because Natty Vibes have been performing for Almost 20 years. They def bring the Hawaiian reggae culture that always brighten up any show. Plus their vibrant humble attitude and roots culture style always hype up the show with their “natural vibrations”. I think Modesto is ready for a real Hawaiian reggae show that not only brings sweet music but a culture that has begun to be

Tym O’Laughlin – Acoustic/ Punk No stranger to the local scene you might remember him in Kings of Today aka KOT or Bonus Traxx this guy has the kind of passion for music that you just don’t see that often anymore. His self-titled acoustic project is just good old fashion punk rock tunes slowed down (slightly) and put with an acoustic guitar. His lyrics need no flash or glam, he is a clever writer who will have his song stuck in your head for days (I speak from experience)! Currently he is working on a new band called Quiet City Riot that will fall in the Ska/ Reggae/ Punk genre. They are going into the studio this month but just because they are young does not mean they have not perked the ears of people already. Greenleafapparel.com and Lovecustomdrums.com both proud sponsors. You can catch him opening for Russ Rankin of Good Riddance at Heros on May 30th. Don’t miss out! www.facebook.com/tym.olaughlin
Aaron Richardson – Punk/ Acoustic His name might not sound all that familiar right now but I would put money on you recognizing his voice! Guitarist and vocalist of Peaceable Jones (and if you want to go back further; The Bomberz) is taking the stage all by himself now. His powerful
George Anthony – Reggae/ Acoustic This Fresno area native is very new to the Modesto scene but is quickly being embraced by our reggae family here in the valley. His mellow vibes would go perfectly on a beach somewhere. At 22 years old he is not new to being in bands, he is actually a metal musician who ended up following his heart towards the music he loves. Influences include Sublime, Jack Johnson and
voice that we all know and love from Peaceable Jones is just as impressive if not more so all stripped down. The music might be acoustic but it definitely has not lost its punk rock edge. His natural vocal talent, guitar skill and the ability to write deep yet clever lyrics is enough to make any type of music lover a fan. “Birth Order” - Dedicated to my sibs Gary and I rode our bikes home after school. I stopped at his house, like I did every day. Gary was unlocking the front door when we heard the phone ringing inside the house. Gary got the door open, rushed in, and grabbed the phone. “Hello,” he said and listened. He turned to me and held out the phone. “It’s your mom.” I went numb inside. “Hi, Mom. What’s up?” “You need to come home. The ambulance just took your father to the hospital.” My dad was on the second floor of City Hospital downtown. It was the same hospital and same floor I had been on when I had ruptured my spleen last February. The smells and sounds brought back all kinds of unpleasant memories, as we walked down the hall to my dad’s room. He smiled as all six of us trooped in. He looked pretty good, considering. “Hey, here’s my brood,” he said to the nurse, who shook a thermometer and then slipped it into his mouth to take his temperature. “Handsome family,” she said. “It is,” he mumbled around the thermometer. She checked her watch, removed the thermometer, and glanced at it. “Now, promise me you won’t get too excited, Mr. Wright,” she said. “I promise,” my father said, as he crossed his heart. She left and us kids flung ourselves at our father, smothering him in hugs and kisses. He returned the affection, like a puppy let out of its cage. “That’s enough,” my mom said gently. “Let him breathe.” We all backed away and moved to wait by the window. As I stood there, it hit me that he and Mom were the last links to our immediate history. When they were gone, they would take our collective memory with them. They were the only ones who remembered what had happened in our lives. Each event, every little detail. When they were no longer with us, if I wanted to know about any-

knew all the memories by heart. When they were gone, it would all be gone. And we’d be left to reconstruct them as best we could. I looked from my dad and mom to us kids, and realized we were standing in birth order. Oldest to youngest, left to right. The way we always did. “Funny,” I thought to myself. “We almost always stand in this order when we’re together.” I remembered a photograph of the family taken during some long-forgotten Valentine’s Day. I couldn’t recall if it was for The Modesto Bee, or the phone company newsletter. Mom and Dad stood in front of us. We stood in birth order, facing our parents, each holding a hand-made paper valentine. That photo made me think of one of our Disneyland trips. We were walking along the beach somewhere and my mom stooped to pick up an abandoned, rusted toy automobile. She started to cry. “What’s wrong?” I asked her. “Nothing,” she replied, then hugged me until I couldn’t breathe.

May is here!
by Abbey Murphy
May is here and school is out at the end of the month! I’m not sure if this is going to be the best month because of the anticipation of summer or if it’s going to be never ending because of the wait, but whatever May brings, it’s going to be awesome! So I’m going to plan out my dream spring day for May for you! First off, call a friend and get out your bikes and helmets. There’s nothing better than starting your morning off in the fresh air and staying active. My favorite places to ride are in Dry Creek and of course, on the lovely Virginia Corridor. Hit the trails and end up in the fabulous downtown Modesto. You can catch some blues with your breakfast at Deva Cafe on a Sunday morning or head over to Greens Market for some awesome treats. I don’t know about you, but the season has started for one of my favorite events in Modesto: The Farmer’s Market! After
Abbey with her “Pop”, Mike McNulty, Madison Murphy & Ryan Leupp at the State Theatre breakfast, make sure to hit this awesome event by the library and pick up fresh fruits and veggies and maybe learn how to make some of your own meals from the professional chefs showcasing fresh meals! This is a great time to enjoy the beauty of Modesto and talk with other excited people around town, but always make sure to stay green

and bring your own reusable bags when you buy your new goodies. When you’ve ridden around town and are tuckered out, use your new fruits and experiment with new popsicles to cool off the hot day (we know there are going to be a lot of them this season!). Try this one, I highly recommend it!
What you’ll need to pick up at the market! 1 peach, cut into 1/2-inch slices (1/2 cup)?2 kiwis, peeled and sliced into 1/4inch rounds?3/4 cup strawberries, finely chopped?1/2 cup blueberries?1/2 cup raspberries?1 1/2 to 2 cups of fruit punch or 100 percent white-grape juice DIRECTIONS 1. Combine fruit in a mixing bowl and arrange the mixture into eight 3-ounce popsicle molds. 2. Pour enough juice into each mold to just cover fruit. 3. Insert popsicle sticks and freeze until solid (about six hours). Once you’ve made these popsicles (which can serve up to 8 of you and your friends), relax outside, take a dip in the pool and be grateful that you live in the warm Central Valley which provides all of these fun, fresh, and healthy opportunities every day! Get ready for summer and stay strong in the last few weeks of school, we’re all going to do it together! Start daydreaming in the last periods of class and plan all of the great things you’ll be able to do this summer in good ol’ Modesto, California!

It is a beautiful spot with plenty of activities and even camping if you like roughing it, check out www.riverdancefarms.com. And while being inspired walking around doing the third Thursday Art Walk I had this vision about doing a roving acoustic Vocal Jam with guitars on Art Walk to bring some festivity and playfulness to the downtown. So this month my partners in crime will be 2 members of Beatles Tribute group Third Party, Chris Murphy and Gary Nelson. Want to encourage others to chime in so look for 3 conspicuous guys with guitars with plenty of merriment and jump in and get wet. I want to encourage everyone to come down, our Art Walk has something for everyone, art, food and drink and lots of folks making the rounds looking for a good time. So whether coming down for revelry art or to put the move on the hors d’oeuvres, come down. More bright moments in store for the month. The State Theatre continues with quality musical offerings. Coming May 18th, the Greg Kihn Band. For those of us expatriates from Bezerkely we used to hang all night long listening the band with their fan base of thousands of babes standing in the front row! We are also excited that our
local bands are doing things at the State! So come on down and support the State, check out www.thestate.org. Another high point guaranteed will be the return of Jimmie Vaughan with his band Wed. May 22nd. Ron & Doug excellent productions are also promoting the gig. Jimmie, brother of Stevie Ray Vaughan is steeped in the same southern Blues and R & B and always tours with a band so tight it will make you holler. Rock and Roll is Born in Modesto.
History of Rock and Roll Roots First in a Musical Series by Chris Murphy
The trail of the history of Rock and Roll and the music and the people that inspired Rock and Roll leads directly to Modesto’s doorstep. Yes my friends, Rock and Roll was born right here in Modesto USA in 1937. Not another Modesto, our Modesto. The same Modesto that is the home of American Graffiti is also the cradle of the modern music civilization. How can this be? Why don’t we have billboards on the freeway and giant museums celebrating our birthplace? These are good questions and now is the time to change all of that and take our place in the Roots of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So pull up a chair, and listen up my friends, because there is a musical tale that begins in Boaz Alabama and leads to Modesto and then to the rest of the world. Was this information hard to find? No it was right under our noses the whole time. Although there were some earlier R & B songs like Rocket 88 in ‘51, the first song commonly agreed as the opening chords of Rock and Roll was “That’s All Right (Mama)” by Elvis Presley recorded in 1954 at Sun Studios in Memphis. This song has direct roots to the string slappin’ sounds played on a big stand up string bass by Fred Maddox in Modesto. Yes, these first notes of Rock and Roll were slapped right here in Modesto USA. In 1937 these sounds were broadcast live

for the world to hear on our own KTRB 860 Radio by Fred and Clay Maddox and their 11 year old sister Rose playing as the Alabama Outlaws. This radio station at the corner of Sylvan and McHenry had a transmitter built by Modesto’s own Cecil Lynch. There are many roots of rock and roll, but the root that made Rock and Roll “ROCK” came from Modesto USA. This rockin’ stand up bass sound that was so exciting was the “clickity-clackity” of the big fat strings being slapped against the finger board. The strings were plucked so hard that the string back slap made a percussion sound and Fred Maddox would even just beat on the strings to make it clack even more. This boogie bass sound of Fred Maddox was changing music and became known as Hillbilly Boogie. Fred Maddox’s bass is on display at the Experience Music Project in Seattle. It is there because the first notes of Rock and Roll maybe been played on that instrument. (1) The story begins: The Maddox family escaped the Dust Bowl of Alabama and made their way to California. After attempting to settle in LA and Oakland, the railroad brought the Maddox Family to Modesto where they picked fruit and vegetables in the fields up and down the central valley. Fred Maddox, tired of field work, encouraged the family to get

into the music business and persuaded Rice Furniture to sponsor a radio show. See Jennifer Allsup’s highlight to read more about this first show. The Maddox sound was fun, catchy and made you want to dance. They were clever and Don and Fred were the comedians of the group and they became famous on the radio and the Maddox Brothers and Rose began performing around the region. The string bass player was the comedian in many of the early swing bands, but it was the rockin’ sound of Fred’s bass combined with the songwriting and the wit of the Maddox family that made hillbilly boogie famous. When the Maddox boys returned from war and returned to Modesto, they started recording and began wearing the flamboyant suits and made quite a name for themselves, touring across the country. Through the years they would play the local places like the Uptown Ballroom and many other local “Honky Tonks” around the area like the El Rancho and George’s Playhouse in Stockton. The Riverbank Club House became the crossroads for a sound that now was known across the nation that would be host to many of the music legends of that time. Hank Williams made a memorable
appearance here in Modesto and played a live performance on KTRB, then under the guidance of Chester Smith, himself a hillbilly music legend and radio star. The Maddox sound became famous across the USA on radio, recordings and their memorable live performances. The Maddox Bros & Rose were known as “America’s Most Colorful Hillbilly Band”. Fred’s bass sound influenced musicians across the USA, and in particular, one Memphis, TN based Bill Black who had returned to Memphis after the war. Bill Black was the legendary bassist for Elvis Presley in those early Sun sessions. “That’s All Right”, a cover of Arthur Crudup’s 1946 song, was recorded after an accidental uptempo rehearsal track. This new “rockin’” version was quickly recorded and sent to radio and radio went wild. The Rhythm and Blues that was popular up and down Highway 61 in the late 40s and early 50s, was blending with the hillbilly boogie slappin’ bass sound that made the music “Rock”. Bill Haley’s Rock around the Clock, also released in 1954 featured the rockin slappin’ bass sound. (1) Around the same time, Cleveland DJ Alan Freed would popularize the term “Rock and Roll”. The Maddox Story will be continued in ModestoView Reverend Horton Heat’s Jim Heath spent some time with us when he played in Modesto recently and we talked about the history of Rockabilly, the Maddox Brothers and the roots of Rock and Roll. “Rockabilly wasn’t just Elvis and Bill Haley, it was a outgrowth of everything. It was the hillbilly people listening to R&B one thing lead to another”. Jim continues “Rockabilly has kind of been the kicking dog of the music business and I hope someday that Rockabilly will get its place in history. Whether

im Anderson & the Rebels have been performing all over California for sometime. This locally based band loves the reflections of musical genres such as Country, Rockabilly, Blues & Gospel along with some good old fashion Boogie Woogie. Jim and the Rebels cover some great Elvis tunes as well on their music journey. Jim started singing in high school, he received a standing ovation after belting out “Love me Tender”. At this point Jim felt his musical passion take off. Jim and the Rebels do early days of Elvis performance and are working on a country show as well. Last year the band decided to record their first album.
Jim Anderson stops playing music in 1992 to work law enforcement in Sonora and Stanislaus Sheriff Departments. Jim had some major injuries to both knees. Jim took an early retirement 2011 and back to the stage he went. At this point in Jim’s life he formed the band the Rebels. Tom Farnsworth, the keyboard master which I hear the folks in the Valley refer to him as “fingers”. Tom is also a musical director and also leads his band in church. Boogie style music with some roaring “rockabilly” is Tom’s favorite. In Jim Anderson and the Rebels, Tom is the second part of their three part harmony. Mickey Yamo is the slappin bassist in the band and the youngest as well. Despite his youth sounds like his elders are always surprised with talents and tenor harmonies. Warning: This Article Contains Red Meat by Earl Matthews Hello everybody, life is good and May is going to rock! I have two big shows this month at Hero’s on Ninth Street. The first is Tempest on May 18th. Tempest is a Celtic Rock band based out of the bay area that has been going strong for 24 years. Tempest blends traditional sounds with danceable Rock. They have played the Sonora Celtic Faire year after year and are coming to Modesto for what will surely be a great night of music with special guest, Callbox. At the end of the month I am proud to bring Red Meat, with special guests Darlin’ Clementine to town. Red Meat hales from San Francisco and has been making music for 20 years. Red Meat serves up a classic honky tonk sound with modern storytelling and humorous stage banter. They have played with Buck Owens and have been the backing band for Wanda Jackson.

been playing drums as long as he can remember. Mr. Landrey lays down the beats on his drums…. which makes Jim shake, rattle and tantalize the ladies with his jiving moves. Gregg has had the opportunity to play and record as far as Chicago back to San Francisco, opening for many greats such as some rockers that have graced Modesto as well: Y&T, Foghat and many more. Frank Masuccci a guitar player extraordinaire. At 23 years of age Frank recorded with his band “The Hamilton Streetcar “on Dot Records. Which lead Frank to open for another local rocking music band “Three Dog Night” local as in Big Mike Allsup lead guitarist of Three Dog Night. Jim answered some questions for me on playing Rockabilly Music explaining, “Performing on your own city is always a lot of fun. You get the hometown crowd that cannot go on the road with you. They have been waiting for you to return, with new music, new stories, and a better show than last time. We enjoy performing for our hometown, as they were the first folks we ever performed for. They helped catapult us to the big stages, big arenas, and big theaters we are playing at today. When you
sing in your hometown it is like performing for 1000 family members. They always support you and the love is always strong! We work our behinds off at every show, no matter at home, or away. When you are away, folks might be skeptical about who you are and how good your show is.... We just hope that word of mouth has beat us to the show and people are lined up to have “One Helluva Time!” Our goal no matter where we perform is to get folks “Outta their Seat and Onto their Feet!” As far as the new and younger generation of Rockabilly Music, I say Keep on Keepin’ On. Don’t ever stop doing what you truly believe in. Rockabilly music has been around for over 60 years, and I don’t see it being put on a shelf anytime soon. Always make sure that you are performing for the right reason. THE PEOPLE! They are what is important. They will be filling the seats and buying the music. See what you can do for them. Become personable and most of all LISTEN TO THEM! Contact jimandersonmusic.net for your musical party pleasures! Smiles, Jenn Allsup
Editor’s note: Take the opportunity to try some great local food during the shows that are featured in this article. Hero’s is known for their Chicago-style pizza and beer brewed on-site, Barkin’ Dog makes an incredible array of burgers that taste great served with their sweet potato fries and their ultra-thick strawberry milkshake and Deva Cafe is known for their delicious crepes and create-your-own breakfast scrambles. Tickets for both shows are available in advance at Hero’s. This months Thursday Night Ramble onMay 2nd is going to be a crazy national affair with bands coming to Modesto from all over the United States! We have Cooking with Turf from Modesto, Early Times originally from Sacramento and now based out of New York, Bloody Ol’ Mule from Oklahoma and last but not least, The Harmed Brothers from Eugene, OR. Jazz and Blues tunes come to life every Tuesday and Wednesday at Hero’s from 7 to 10 and there is no cover. Tuesday night’s Jazz jam is hosted by the Ian Stambaugh Trio. Wednesday night we feature a different band every week. It’s a great way to get your mid-week music fix without breaking the bank. The Poorhouse Millionaires will be at Deva Cafe on J Street every sunday this month

Giant Cows and Barack Obama
Photos by Ruben J. Porras
Your home is your castle. It is the place that you invite people into and the place that you can feel relaxed and alive. One shop at the heart of downtown Modesto aims to make your home a unique and colorful space that you can be proud of. Dezignz on 15th Street is the sort of place that you need to see to believe. It is the goto place in the central valley if you ever have the wild urge to buy a life-size sculpture of a cow, a silver cowboy boot, an image of Marilyn Monroe that sparkles and glows or a solid metal bust of President Barack Obama. Dezignz serves up the whimsical and the practical in a multi-level space that is more art gallery than furniture store. The team that makes Dezignz a success is an artistic force of spirited entrepreneurs that brings years of experience and education to the business. They combine their unique styles and concepts into work that infuses life into homes and businesses around the world from their base in Modesto. Owner Luis Olivera developed his love
by Ruben J. Porras
for design and art by decorating his various homes and business interests. Olivera started his life as an entrepreneur at age 15 by opening his first telecommunications store in Modesto. By age 18 he owned seven stores. He has since parlayed his efforts into other ventures including a number of bars and restaurants. His love for art and design has led him around the world and you can see the results of those travels on display at Dezignz.
Running the day-today operations at Dezignz is Olivera’s partner, Gaby Gomes. Gomes came to the United States in 2005 from Paris to study. He was a marketing manager for an international consulting firm before meeting Olivera and recognizing that the two could combine forces to influence the furniture and interior design industries. Rounding out the Designz team is Julianne Freitas who has over 10 years of experience
in furniture sales and interior design in Modesto. Freitas grew up in Los Angeles in the midst of a celebrity culture that inspired her interest in the art and design field. Take the time to check out Dezignz and experience the skill and sense of artistry that makes the business unique. There is truly nothing else quite like it in Modesto. Bob Fores, Founder of Ride for MOM by Chris Murphy
Modesto USA is a great community with lots of opportunity for community involvement. Our city is big enough to attract a sufficient number of people and business to build significant momentum on a project and yet we are small enough to where a brilliant idea that helps our community can be recognized enough to break through to be potentially successful nationwide. Love Modesto is such an example. Recently, the Ride for Mom® event is becoming a more important part of our community culture. The event was inspired by the love and support for a parent that suffered. It is positive event that has connected with many who have had similar experiences. This is just one of many reasons why Modesto is a great place to live and work. Robert “Bob” Fores is a long time local attorney and partner at the Fores Macko law firm. Bob is a proud and fun family man with his wife Cindi and three grown children. Among other things, Bob is a former Chair of the Board at the Modesto Chamber of Commerce, past President of Modesto Sunrise Rotary Club, a current member of the Gallo Center Board of Directors, and is a Cal Berkeley Alumnus-his wife and daughter are also Cal Bears (Go Bears!). Bob has always found a way to contribute to our community. When he lost his mother a few years ago, Bob was inspired to create an event that would both celebrate her memory and provide a way for the community to come together and have fun while promoting positive lifestyle choices. Let’s learn more about Bob Fores and why Ride for Mom exists today. ModestoView: You grew up in the east bay area and northern California. How did you find Modesto? Bob Fores: Opportunity. In the late 1980s, Modesto seemed to be a nice place to raise a family where a young lawyer would have an easier time developing a practice than a city like San Francisco where the legal market was more impacted. Modesto was more affordable that San Francisco and appeared to have a culture similar to Sacramento where my wife Cindi grew up.
20
MV: What made your mom so special? BF: She was supportive and loyal to her family and friends to a fault, smart, witty and caring. She was my Mom! MV: Now that you have seen the outpouring of support for Ride for Mom, does it make you realize that the experience that your mom went through is perhaps shared by many others? BF: Absolutely. In one form or another, everyone has a “Mom” story. In a larger sense, Mom is someone you know who is close to you, a mom, dad, sibling, or friend,
who is sick. In my case, it was my mom. Everyone is connected to someone close to them who has suffered from the scourges of cancer, diabetes or heart disease. MV: Besides participating in Ride for Mom, what can people do to support these efforts? BF: The best thing people can do is pass the word. This is a totally grass roots and community effort. Specifically, one can register to ride, volunteer, be an exhibitor at our lifestyle fair, or financially contribute. Check out www.rideformom.com. MV: Is there something for people of all abilities at the Ride for Mom?
History of Rock and Roll Roots
BF: Yes. That’s one of the cool things about the event. There are easy rides and challenging rides: 10, 30, 72 mile and century routes. It is a ride, not a race. There is also lifestyle fair and lunch. The event occurs on the day before Mother’s Day. The idea is to have fun with family and friends while riding bikes and then having lunch. MV: This is a great event. Do you feel that this could expand to other cities, locally and nationally? BF: I am flattered that people have suggested this could occur. Conceivably yes. In reality, the event is a simple concept: have fun while promoting the tag “Be Active. Eat Healthy. Live Better.” The model we are developing for staging the event is one that could be repeated anywhere. It is entirely supported on all fronts by volunteers; there is little overhead. Our organizing team is wonderful and the key to the success of the event: they are unbelievably giving, organized and enthusiastic. I hope they all are having as much fun as I am. MV: As Modestans with college age kids, what do we need to do to create an environment here where we stop the brain drain so that our next generation will return here after college? BF: We need more and better jobs, particularly entry level jobs that will lead to professional development and growth. Young people must have assurances that there will be realistic opportunity for economic advancement. We have a wonderful community but too many of our brightest kids never return. MV: What personal characteristics of success do you hope that you have passed on to your kids? BF: Working hard, trying hard not to make the same mistake twice, and a commitment to our families, friends and helping our communities, MV:. You work in downtown. How important is a vibrant downtown to our community?
BF: Essential. The identity of our city is defined by its downtown, a visible representation of our city’s image, economic success and quality of life. These factors are critical in business retention and recruitment. MV: What has been one of your most favorite Modesto experiences? BF: There are many with many great people. Besides my involvement with RFM, one that comes to mind is socializing in our backyard with friends on a seasonable spring evening exaggerating about how many miles I rode that day and how many feet I climbed.
MV: Describe your ideal Modesto day? BF: It begins with a cappuccino, continues with learning that all of my clients hit grand slams that day in their cases, is furthered with a brisk 20 mile ride out in the orchards with my riding partners, and finishes with a BBQ dinner on the patio with Cindi. MV: And our final question, Beatles or Stones? BF: “I get by with a little help from my friends…” Beatles! Check out www.rideformom.com and https://www.facebook.com/RideForMom

Dj Luis Dominguez by Tru Luv Lopez
In this edition of The Urban/El Urbano, by yours Truly Tru Luv Lopez, I take you into the world of one of the most respected and talented Latin DJs in Central Valley Spanish Radio. “DJ Luis Dominguez” The road to successes was not an easy task, and as a young teenager, Luis would frequent a local venue “Roller King” perhaps one of the most happening place to be for all ages in the late 90’s. Setting up equipment, along side his brother DJ Algeria who DJ’d the venue. Perhaps one of many inspirations, his brother influenced his talent. This all lead up to Club Maxx, his first gig and opportunity to shine. Young Dominguez was not even old enough to be in the club. The only place he was allowed was behind the DJ booth. The lights, the music, the crowd screaming unknowingly, without prejudice, that the kid on stage was not old enough to even drink. Yet he still rocked the dance floor. This led to many opportunities such as mix shows on Arizona station “Que Buena”, labeled one of the youngest DJs in the scene for the time. That gig only lasted 6 months for his decision to return to the valley was in part for his love for his college sweetheart, and his friends and family back home. He returned to open arms and more opportunities were arising. Next he ventured on the Romance 100.5 spinning top 40’s in Tulare, like many other DJs, he never asked for pay with the anticipation that the recognition could lead him to greater things. So it did. He spent 5 years on La Kalle 107.9 in Fresno spinning on the traffic mix, where you still can find him on the weekend mix shows. Syndicated shows are becoming more frequent on radio now a-days. This is something I find disturbing with a lack of personal touch with the local fans. More
22
than likely these are corporate moves. But, if you’re in Chicago, you can listen to Luis mix on Maxima. In Modesto, he has played at the Fat Cat, Palladium and Copper rhino, and local radio station Tri Color. H e has also contributed his time to the local Lip Synching events in the Centre Plaza in Modesto. The one talent he holds that I can personally comment on is this, his style of mixing is not practiced much by others, The combination of top 40s Spanish and English music make the mash-ups even better. The crowd never leaves the dance-floor and the young generation of Latinos and Latinas with the cross-culture of Hip Hop and Latino Music is making waves! Drop me a LMFAO WITH INTENTALO and See what happens!! We finished off with a few extra questions. Tru Love Lopez: Luis could you tell me who have you had the opportunity to open up for in the past? DJ Luis: i have worked with the following. Reggeton- (Don Omar,Khris y Angel, Dj Flex, Gocho, Fulanito, Fuego, Dj Kane, Selena’s brother AB Quintanilla, Frankie J, Akwid, Nina Sky......) Rock-Pop (RBD singer Dulce Maria, Tribal MTY, Reik, Belanova, Enanitos Verdes, Jaguares, Cristian Castro, Gloria Trevi.....) TLL: Can you tell me a bit about the Latinos Stand up Movement? DJL: Latino Stand Upp it’s a group of friends DJs to promote our Latino events, which is not just for Latinos, we want to show everyone that Latino music has a lot of talent and encourage young local talent to pursue their goals. We have DJs to graphic designers to producers and everything that we need to promote events or local music.
History of Rock and Roll Roots
TLL: Were can we listen in on your shows and or see you spin? DJL: I’m DJ’n Fridays for Valdivia promotions at the Rainbow in Fresno. Saturdays Mezcal bar and grill the hottest Latino spot in Fresno. Radio mixshows you can download the univisionradio.com app. And mixshows are on Saturdays night in Chicago and Fresno, also have a mixshow in Az. and soon San Francisco and San Jose TLL: Who has been your biggest inspirations? DJL: My biggest inspiration is my brother (Roberto Dominguez) cause he’s been opening a lots of doors for a lot of people and me. This has been your Music Blast for the month! Stay tuned! Metal May at the Fat Cat! by Mike Vanek
Hello Modesto metal maniacs! May is my favorite month on the calendar. First of all Happy Mothers day and what a month we have for you, our Mo town metal faithful. It all starts May 2nd with Taproot, Better Left Unsaid, Clockwork Hero and others will invade the Fat Cat! Then on May 9th Mushroomhead and Nothing But Losers will also invade the Fat Cat!! May 10th is the Zombie Death Stench NATIONAL CD RELEASE party followed the very next day with Eroszion, Blastlung and more. Once again these shows are at Fat Cat but there is great metal all over the area whether it be Fat Cat, Spinnakers or Other Place, Yosemite Lanes or Theater 417 there is METAL ALL OVER MODESTO!! This months spotlight bands or bands to look out for are Symbolik outta Stockton, Blastlung from Manteca, the super awesome Eroszion who are making Modesto home as of late traveling from the Stockton/Manteca area weekly for shows, meetings and functions. One last thing I need to mention is something I take part in every week and it has become a Monday institution in the downtown Modesto entertainment community. The Fat Cat hosts a weekly meeting every Monday where people from all walks of life meet and discuss what they do in the scene and shows are booked at pretty much every venue in town by most of the well known promoters in town and of course if you want to play or book these shows or shows at Fat Cat, this is the place to be and meet new and awesome people! It happens every Monday between 5:00-5:30pm and they usually last about an hour or two. The most important part is the answer to my most
24
frequently asked question: How do we get on National shows at Fat Cat? The answer my friends is to go to these meetings and book or play good shows at Fat Cat and it will happen. It may not happen over night, but if you become a Monday regular eventually it will happen. Bands like Nothing But Losers, Eroszion, Warpath Assassins, & Zombie Death Stench were all featured with national shows recently and local musicians turned promoters Ronny Myer and Doug Robinett of Ron & Doug’s Excellent promotions were given the Jimmy Vaughn show to promote so if definitely pays off. This is a great way to get to know a lot of people who work in the Modesto entertainment community!! Well that’s all for me this Month as always KEEP ONE FOOT IN THE GUTTER AND ONE FIST IN THE GOLD!!! Mike Vanek facebook.com/mike.vanek

n the pursuit of learning a martial art well, the ability to lose is a big challenge, hard to understand and even harder to achieve. We all want to look good, we all want to win and we have been taught to do so from the time we were very young. I’m not saying I don’t like winning (I love it). But there is actually something to gain from being able to lose that is rather important. What could we possibly gain from losing? Losing face, losing an argument, losing a fight is not a welcome experience. However, when we let go of the Ego (ideas and expectations we hold of ourselves), we enter an unknown territory in which we may not only experience and learn new things but also may have a chance at re-inventing ourselves by finding that what LOOKED like a loss can be turned into an advantage and actually make us win in the end. The place where I first learned about the importance of losing was in a T’ai Chi

Investment in Loss by Mary Layton class doing an exercise called ‘Push Hands’ where two people are engaged in a joint hand exercise. The point of the exercise is to feel and understand another person’s energy and intention. If my partner pushes me, can I be soft and relaxed enough to sense his/her intention? Rather than using force against force, can I then be relaxed enough to observe the force, neutralize it and redirect it just at the right time? In the beginning years of my training I was afraid of this kind of “confrontation”. I felt competitive and only wanted to “win”. Fearful of losing I resisted my partner and was using way too much force. It was not a pleasant experience. Slowly I began to realize that I learned the most when I did get pushed a lot. It was in receiving, rather than resisting, that I was eventually able to improve my skill level. This is when I realized that I gained more understanding from having ‘invested in loss’.
