EDITORS Chris, Abigail, Madison, Becky and Ryan Leupp enjoy a fun afternoon together

Greetings Friends: There is something about May that seems to explode with color, activities and life in general. As we all look to the skies and hope for any drop of rain that comes down, we are all looking to enjoy our outdoor living. May is the official BBQ season opener and it is time to get the bikes tuned up as the evenings are long and fun and loaded with good food and friends. It is a mind blower that it is the end of the school year already. The kids have chosen their colleges, graduations will be all over town. My daughter Abbey is nearing the end of her first year at UC Berkeley and I couldn’t be more proud of her and her accomplishments. Good to know she has a great group of friends for their housing next year. Which brings us to Mom. Moms are so very important and I am married to the most amazing mom ever. She is beautiful, crafty, creative, super smart and fun. I am very proud that we have raised such amazing daughters and Becky’s skill as a mom is one of the real reasons why. As I helped them explore our world, she helped them explore themselves and learn who they are and what they could be. She taught them how to make the right choices, be good friends and talk about their feelings and issues in fun creative ways. Now our girls have so many valuable skills and it is amazing to see them already using these tips and even passing them on. Good mom skills are so important and it is one of the best gifts you can give. We asked our readers about some of their favorite mom experiences that we highlight in this issue. My Mom deserves sainthood for raising me and my mother in law is reason Becky and I ever got together, but those are much longer stories. Happy Mother Day. Cycling is in my blood. I grew up racing bicycles and love riding. Ride for fun, to race, for fitness, or for transportation, but what every it is you do, ride your bike. Getting a bike used to be a “Rite of Passage” that all children experienced, but video games and lack of safe places to ride have all but ended that. We need to get that back. We need to teach kids how to ride bikes early, how to ride safely and make riding a bike part of our culture. We live in a flat city and we should do so much more. It’s healthy, fun, and you can do it with friends so make a point to do your bike thing this month. Remember, with every bike ride there is one less car on the road. One of my all time favorite movies, Breaking Away will be at the State Theatre on May 8. Hope you can join us there and you can combine bikes and mom at Ride for Mom on May 10. I hope you are feeling the May love this month and hope you enjoy the good things that are happening. With every ModestoView we print, every Facebook post and every Tweet or Instagram picture, we are spreading the good news about Modesto. I love speaking to the local service clubs and reminding people how truly interesting we are. We have so many good things to do and so many great local business that believe we can be better. So make sure you shop at the businesses that advertise here in ModestoView. They are our friends, and they are doing their part to make Modesto better so let’s support them. Please let me know what you like about ModestoView, what you want us to improve and I look forward to seeing you out and about in Modesto.

On the cover Beside bringing attention to bike month we wanted to celebrate the amazing mothers we all have and love. On the cover this month we have featured four generation of women. On the right is Drea Lecher, a hair stylist at Bella Vagos; and in front of her is her daughter Taja Cowell; next to Drea is her mother Pam Lecher and Grandma mother Carol Claxton. These beautiful mothers and daughters are enjoying a lovely Sunday afternoon riding bikes at the park. We all here at the View wanted to say, thank you mom for all you do. We love you. The cover was photographed by Michael J Mangano ModestoView would not be possible without the generous support of Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group. Here I am right at deadline trying desperately to come up with words to put onto the shiny screen in front of me. Maybe I should try to write this earlier in the month but then would it be current? I’ll have to figure that out. So, let’s continue - April was interesting for me. The amazing and often magical girlfriend and I moved from our downtown walk-up to a flat near the college. We are now surrounded by pretty trees and college kids walking to MJC instead of homeless folks sunbathing across the street and newly-released jail inmates arguing with people on cell phones. We do however have one very annoying bird that must be broken somehow. The poor thing is stuck on repeat. Life near the college is totally different than life downtown. I suppose that I didn’t realize just how different it would be. We live very near the canal and the Virginia Corridor walking trail and that is nice. On one hand, it’s easy as heck to get around town via the trail but on the other hand, if my girlfriend really gets annoyed with me a canal “accident” might be pretty easy for her to stage. I’ll be good. I promise Do you have big plans for the summer? Are you excited about the American Graffiti events coming up? It is hard to believe that the movie that started all of this will start the action at the end of this month. Don’t miss American Graffiti at the State on May 31st. Dress up for it and enjoy a root beer float. Good Times! As for me, I will be busy covering the festivities for the next couple of months but I’d love to es-cape if only for a bit to travel. I really want to see the Grand Canyon and one of those wacky alien museums in Death Valley. I have a feeling that taking a tour with a man wearing tin foil on his head will somehow change my life. I’m not sure how, but the feeling nags at me. Maybe I will be able to finally figure out where the heck I came from. Let’s try to have some fun as we head into the rest of the year. Big movies such as The

Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Godzilla are on the horizon and our event calendar is starting to fill up with concerts and other activities. Local fruit stands and farmer’s markets are now open and they are always a great source of inexpensive family fun. Let me get visual here and go all “writer” for a second with a short story to close out this month’s column. Maybe this will make you want to leave the couch and take a journeyThe Berry Booth All the young man ever wanted was to have the courage to ask the girl at the strawberry booth out. There was something in her twinkling green eyes that awakened him

inside. There was something about her flaming red ponytails wrapped in red bows that made her look both innocent and wild. He could sit for hours watching her hand out samples. Random people would stand before her and bite into juicy berries and occasionally someone would pick up a basket or two to take home. She was inviting and passionate about her job. Maybe next year the boy will rent the next booth over. Maybe they will combine their efforts. Maybe they will start a farm on their own. But for now, he will daydream as he watches her and picks just the right juicy strawberries to bite into out of his justpurchased basket.

! o t s e d o M o G Lemonade Day was adopted a few years ago to help further educate youth about entrepreneurship. Lemonade Day is a free, community-wide, educational initiative to teach children how to start, own and operate their own business-a lemonade stand. Many of these lemonade stands will be placed throughout Modesto on May 17th from 10am to 5pm. This is their third year. Go out and help continue to support our community of early entrepreneurs. They will be our future. If you would like to participate visit www.modesto.lemonadeday.org.

ART

Artist Open Studio Tour by Jim Christiansen

I’d like to thank all of you brave souls who showed up at my converted 1930s garage/ studio during Stanislaus Artist Open Studio. While a more manageable turnout for me, as it seems many of my friends took the suggestion to see other artists. I got to meet new artists, Facebook friends and Modesto View readers I don’t know well enough. I found some new homes for some of my work, and pretty much show off where I store the materials, frames, and rather large portfolio about 40 or so years in the making. One thing we remind people, this is a Travel and Tourism Roundtable initiative. The maps have the contact information, addresses to look artists up to visit again, or request invitation beyond our once a year Open Studio Weekend. My first guests were new journalists John Griswold and David Schroeder working on feature for their new arts magazine venture. Look for it to release soon. Brian Swander got to tour the map this year, on that classic bike he rides, and has suggested we organize a bike ride within the tour map area. I had quite a few bicy-

clists in attendance besides Swander, who was demonstrating his new bike easel to Bob Barzan at my house that suits Brian’s drawing stints at Farmers Market. I mention Bob, who is director of Modesto Art Museum, as they have the new Design District coming up this month, and competition for bike rack installations. And with Amgen Tour history, and Ride for Mom coming up this month, where I have shown in past, bikes are Modesto too. Valentino Alexander, was another artist who rode a bicycle to my house. AOS is thinking transportation. My house is one of the studios actually at a bus stop. If Brian opens the studio next year, consider him the course master and start at Rue de Yoe. Since we are appealing to tourists, not just our local fans, the addition of Acoustic Rock Society’s Art and Music event at Center Stage Lower Level Theater, and Patterson Art and Wine Gala benefit for Patterson Repertory Theater, have been welcome additions, for those visiting the area on an art, entertainment weekend, with something to do our Arts friends excel

PRE-

at. Add that as reason to spend the night and join us on Sunday. I had visitors from Canada, Netherlands, Santa Cruz and Bay area among guests Maybe we add a motel package for 2015. The combined Spring shows at Carnegie Arts Center and the Mistlin Gallery showing during Open Studio benefitted the weekend stay idea as well. Both galleries displayed well, in a strong show in both locations, with the side benefit of public display of the studio and education work areas. Central California Art Showcase first year worked out pretty well, despite some problem issues in short notification sure to be fixed next time out. The combined shows run through May 11. Next show at Mistlin will be themed on American Grafitti opening June 1. I will miss the summer events opening as I will be showing art, enjoying music, the powwow, Merced River Fair, Adamantine Belly Dancers, at the Riverdance Farms

tenth Annual Pick and Gather Festival in Livingston. Poorhouse Millionaires, Cottonwood Creek, Tim Lechuga on sitar, bluegrass locals Frank Solivan Band, and other friends in the region, at the organic U-Pick cherries and blueberries event you shouldn’t miss. It is unique. May 31, June 1 and camping is $15, admission Saturday $10, students and seniors $5, Sunday its $5 and student, senior rate $2. Kayaks, farm tours, art and crafters, food, hay bales, kids’ area, workshops and a lot of fun. www. riverdancefarms.com and if I can squeeze it in, Respect on the River two weeks earlier. Third Thursday Art Walk is May 15.

BAR

Life Gave Me Lemons when I Specifically Ordered Beer

by Kate Serpa Photos by Philip Johnson

R.C. Essig at 17th St Public House

If April showers bring May flowers, then Mayflowers bring -- well, probably a boatload of rats, scurvy, buckled hats, and is loosely responsible for the American Revolutionary War (even though it took place over a hundred years later, but you get what I’m saying). You can’t get too mad at 18th century Britain though, because they did standardized IPA development and elevated the drinking game, and IPAs are basically the nectar of the beer gods, in my opinion -- but I’m getting off topic. It’s the May Madness. I know that’s not right, but I’m sure we can all find something to be mad about in May, too. By the way, Happy Mother’s Day! I know you avid ModestoView readers will be familiar last month’s opinion topic on ideal ‘Staycations’ -- essentially a day trip that involves you making it home in time to crash in your bed in time for Game of Thrones. My answer completely missed the ‘leave Modesto’ concept of the question,

and I responded “State Theatre & Minnie’s,” which, granted, is a fantastic pairing, but kind of misses the mark. I blame it on the Madness. Or the morning drinking. Enter Phil, provider of fun ideas, knower of unknown bars, suave designated driver pilot, and taker of the fancy photos -- he started talking about this amazing beer bar in Merced, and then I started thinking about how Turlock was on the way which meant a long-overdue stop at the Dust Bowl brewery -- basically I buckled under delicious beer talk. So there it is, Modesto. I cheated on you, and I cheated on you hard. Merced’s 17th Street Pubic House and Turlock’s Dust Bowl lured me in with their brews -- but, of course, Minnie’s never fails to drive me back into Modesto’s arms. 17th Street Public House: Operated by brothers RC and Joey Essig (also owners and operators of The Partisan venue down the street), Vanessa Hofmann, and Tim

Williams (the contractor behind the wooden 741-piece bar), this dark and sumptuous bar features no domestics, no limes, and no ice -- just eyes on the prize with a polished atmosphere, 15 diverse and rotating taps, a selective yet accessible wine list, and a choice craft bottle collection (with barley wines, ciders, and sour mashes to boot). Unsure of what to get? Not anymore. 17th’s staff is helpful, knowledgeable, and operates on a non-snob code of conduct. Everything I sampled (Jalapeno Sculpin & Ballast Point IPA, Duchesse de Bourgogne Sour Beer, Blackthorn Hard Cider, & the list goes on) was uncharted beer territory for me and was only selected through conversations with bartenders Jill, Matt, and RC -- all founts of beer knowledge. 17th Street Public House is an ideal stop for a cold glass of beer class and solid brew talk. How anyone manages to live in Turlock and not be at Dust Bowl 24/7 baffles me because, damn, people -- garlic fries, a sam-

pler paddle of their fresh beer, and a burger at their brewery is pretty unbeatable. Dust Bowl’s Hops of Wrath continues to be my go-to pint, and I was pleased to see 17th Street pouring it out on tap. The last stop on any trip, staycation or not, should be Minnie’s; I was also up to my eyeballs in delicious beer at this point and was craving pot stickers and something mixed with juice (need to get that vitamin C, people). A Modesto staple, no one can beat their back patio or Diane’s Mai Tais at Minnie’s. Beer, burgers, and booze made for a pretty ideal staycation. Happy May, Modesto. Ya’ll stay out of trouble. 17th Street Public House - 315 West Main Street, Merced, CA Dust Bowl Brewery - 200 West Main Street, Turlock, CA Minnie’s Restaurant - 107 McHenry Ave., Modesto, CA

Modesto View May ’14 Clean Eats Central Valley

Facebook and Instagram: Clean Eats Central Valley Modesto Eats Clean! Over the decades we’ve watched food trends come and go. I believe that clean eating is here to stay. Food is so key when it comes to our best health in so many ways. This is why I’m thrilled to share with my fellow Modesto Viewers about several opportunities to become “full” in a clean eating way via our own stellar local restaurants! Introducing Clean Eats Central Valley Cocktail/ Social Eating events hosted and founded by Ashley Cherry, also of Modesto’s Cold House Vodka and PMZ Real Estate along with Victoria Popoff owner and founder of Modesto’s Studio V Pilates & Fitness. These two blonde bombshells met 3 years ago through the bikini boot camp program offered at Studio V. Ashley decided to make a personal objective to make it fun for clean eating in Modesto as a “social eater.” She has worked with local restau-

by Dana Johnson

rants to implore them to not only host clean eats cocktail parties, but for several clean eats dishes to be regularly featured menu items. Yep, these gatherings are energized with a total party atmosphere. The 1st event was held at the Boardroom which was a huge success. I also attended the most recent at Vito’s Ristorante. For the extremely reasonable price of $20 you are allowed one skinny Cold House Vodka cocktail and full access to the buffet of decadent clean eats, like Vito’s healthy loaded salads, brown rice pastas with chicken marinara, zucchini chicken spaghetti in a divine red sauce, and tempting seafood dishes. My new favorite on Vito’s menu is the white wine chicken and spinach, soooo Dana~licious! Ashley shared with me the genuine positive results she has reaped in the past year since she started eating clean and regularly

working out at Studio V: Physically she said she is more toned, no longer feels bloated, and no longer refuses to have her picture snapped! This regimen also can help to reduce high blood pressure. Psychologically, Ashley says she’s generally in a better mood, has a more positive attitude and outlook on life while she’s less tired though she works out! Now that’s just awesome!! TOWER Exploring the Eagles Hall by Pete Grimaldi Modestans love to party. We have a very long, dubious and mostly undocumented history of it. If you grew up in Modesto, you likely attended some family event and have old memories of an Alamo style building just east of town, notably the Eagles Hall. You then might be curious how much of that history is kept within that arched stucco structure with the looming tower. Contained inside this unique building is a labyrinth of angled walls, trap doors, narrow stairwells and underground pathways. Home to a century old cache of ghosts, wild parties, desperate times and secrets all kept within the walls of this notorious former speakeasy. I recently took a special exploratory tour of the hall with good friend Gary Carluci of the Eagles Lodge. Although very little is known of its origins, the building was constructed sometime after 1900 and was known as the infamous Tower Club. Built by a man named Johnny Myers, judging from its layout, it’s main function was to host very private parties and provide a safe haven for local vice - just in time of Prohibition. Gary took me on a very special tour, “where no other media has gone before”. He first pointed out the rows of exterior window casings, all boarded now, just to picture how beautiful this building was in its early day. As you enter the lobby, to the left of the main hall, an inconspicuous closet hides a ladder up to the attic where mechanisms for an elaborate set of trap doors are still visible and in place. They remain there waiting for a signal. During Prohibition, metal doors would drop down sealing off secret exits at the alert of a police raid, while fleeing patrons scrambled into tight crawl spaces to hide. The narrow attic walls also exposed remnants of one-way mirror frames used by pit bosses to spy the one time casino tables played on the hall floor. The trip below the basement was fun, but not if you’re creeped out by total darkness and tight spaces. I followed Gary down to the last known connection to the underground tunnel that led to the old Corte de Oro. Drop doors would seal these exits off

as well. Because of the many odd angles and false walls purposely created (to buy people time to escape), it was hard to tell where we were in relation to the building above us. We ended the tour with a visit to the “crows nest”. A jump up to a small narrow stairwell left of the stage, leading to a tiny abandoned caretaker apartment, and again up to another smaller staircase, and yet again, to the actual lookout tower which had long been closed tight. I am impressed how the hall remains in meticulous condition due to the constant efforts and dedication of the Eagles Lodge members. Although there are no more existing tunnels, the very design and intent of the building is a historical treasure that locals can still experience for themselves. Even though you may not get the full tour, you’ll still be excited by the scalloped bar room, the spring loaded dance floor and the classic Spanish architecture. Truly if these walls could talk. My association and love for the hall began in 1996 when I began promoting Cajun zydeco music in Modesto. My first show hosted the great Al Rapone (Queen Idas producer & brother) and his Zydeco band. Word got out the Eagles hall was buzzing

with thump-pumping zydeco and dancers bounding off the spring loaded dance floor. Over the years, we’ve had many dances with many great zydeco players as Tom Rigney, Andre Thierry, Crawdaddy and Grammy winner, Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, all have played the Eagles Hall. The BluesBox Bayou Band is thrilled to keep this tradition alive and well with a Zydeco Dance Party, Saturday, May 24th at the Eagles Hall Modesto. Don’t worry, we promise no raids, and no one will be watching you from the tower.

The exhibition covers the spectrum of design disciplines from fashion to graphic, industrial to interior, and includes original designs and inventions for everything from furniture, machinery, plants, tools, toys, typography and tattoos. It might surprise some people to learn that an automobile was designed and patented in Modesto in 1902, making it among the earliest in the country. The exhibition will overlap Modesto Design Week, May 10-17, a week of tours, exhibits, movies, and special events celebrating design in the city’s newly designated design district. Over the last eight years, the Modesto Art Museum has uncovered our awesome architectural heritage. Everyone had forgotten that the city once had a national reputation in building and landscape design, a reputation that was more celebrated away from Modesto than here. Recently, ModestoView has uncovered Modesto’s exciting rock music legacy. We had forgotten that our city played an important role in the development of the beat of rock and roll. That heritage is also more appreciated away from Modesto. You have to go to a Seattle museum to see Fred Maddox’s bass. The same is true with Modesto’s movie contributions; except for George Lucas, mostly forgotten Now, the Modesto Art Museum is uncovering a heritage in design that is remarkable and ongoing and celebrated in its exhibit Modesto Design, April 29 to June 8th at the

Actually the correct lyrics are “Eat Steak, Eat Steak eat a big old steer “. You can hear where “werewolf “ sounds like “big old “ right? I love finding fun facts. I would like to continue with a

What I remember most is that she always told me to “be yourself and be happy”. From Michael J Mangano

Rebecca Murphy

Our mom taught us many life skills that we use all the time. We would say the name game thing for parenting (take a letter away for misbehaving, then you lose a privilege if you lose your whole name) and just a key basic skill would be – “kill them with kindness! Always take the high road”. This has really helped us be successful. From Madison and Abigail Murphy “If you teach a child the pleasure of reading, you open the world to them. A book can take you anywhere and you can learn about nearly everything. A child’s books are the gateway to creativity, intelligence and fun. If someone says they don’t like reading...they haven’t found the right book.”

by Chris Murphy and our ModestoView friends There is really nothing more special than a mother. The nurturing, the life, the creation, the caring and the guidance for a new life and a future life. There is something about the mother instinct, the intuition, and of course the meaningful tips for living. In May, we celebrate Mother’s Day, but we feel the bonds of mother and child all the time. There are special moments and special times that create who we are. This month, our ViewCrew and our ModestoView readers reached inside to tell us about their own tips of being a mom and shared the tips about how their moms made them who they are. Let’s celebrate our Moms together. This is also posted online at www.modestoview.com and we welcome you to add your own story.

Teaching my children how to pray and love one another through our Christian Catholic faith was just as important to me as loving them daily and unconditionally. From Efren Martinez My mother Bette passed away in 1992 when I was 29 and she was only 50 (a victim of MS). I am now 51 with two teenagers of my own and like to pass on her wisdom and tips, some heartfelt and some just funny. There have been so many advice my mother has given me but the one that has helped me when I’ve been down was, “Keep laughing, keep your humor, always see the fun in life and turn an uncomfortable situation into something you can make jokes about.” Thats her personality always trying to put a smile on your face and cracking jokes to bring people together. From Domi Vargas

My mother has tons of amazing advice, and the older I get, the more I appreciate it! I remember being a teenager, feeling frustrated with her and venting to one of my friends on the phone. She overheard and afterward, instead of berating me, calmly said, “I will always be your mother. Be careful how you talk about the permanent people in your life. Be kind and prudent with your words as you cannot erase the impressions you make.” The photo is of my mom when she was in high school. She graduated from Ripon High School’s class of 1960. My mom deserves a hall of fame award for surviving my childhood. Patience was her virtue her endless direction of my hyperactivity were her amazing skills. Inspire creativity! I relish every opportunity to expose our kids to art, music, dance, poetry, nature and all that fosters their imaginations. Because they will grow up too quickly and find themselves in a world where creativity and imagination are lacking...where make believe is rare and struggles are certain. I work at keeping them young and helping them experience all that life can offer but also teaching them to recognize how blessed they are, so that they will develop hearts to serve and change the world in phenomenal ways.

BIKE “Be Active. Eat Healthy. Live Better.” by Chris Murphy

Modesto has all the makings of a great bicycle city. We have a centrally located

downtown and it is only about 5 mile radius to get to just about anywhere in town. Our biggest hill climb are the overpasses and our weather may get warm in the summer, but it is not really humid. We can become a really great cycling city. We need to make bikes a priority and we need to continue to make it easy to ride bikes and park bikes in town. Over the last year, you have seen new bike lanes marked out, new downtown parklets with bike parking, a new design district with bike parking as a feature and more projects are on the way. There are fixie bikes all over town and the Stanislaus County bike club has many rides and the Dry Creek Coalition has off road rides and trail maintenance projects. The Virginia Corridor and the Hetch Hetchy and Mensinger trails are well used by both recreational and competitive cyclists. We recommend that you dust off your bike, get a good helmet and do a new kind of exploring in Modesto. The more cyclists we have, the better the conditions will be and there will be one less car on the road.

AUTHOR Artifacts by Ken White

My best friend’s son and I played a round of golf a few years back. It was the first time we had teed off since his father died. He inherited his father’s clubs and golf bag. On the first tee, he unzipped one of the side pockets to put away his wallet. Inside was a water bottle and a half-full bag of sunflower seeds that hadn’t been touched since the last time his father and I played. When my mother-in-law died, we inherited a boom box her children had given her so she could listen to music without it becoming a bother. I put it on a shelf in the garage so I could play CDs and the Giants games while working in the yard. I decided to play some Clarion old Buffalo Springfield tunes. I opened the CD changer. It was filled with Christmas discs from the previous year. It was likely the last music she listened to. That same Christmas, my wife and I had toured several homes as part of the “Holiday Open House” fund-raiser for Community Hospice. Each home offered refreshments. Some sold home-made gifts. Each house had its own unique collection of family memorabilia displayed on book shelves, mantles, window sills, pianos, and refrigerators. The refrigerators were especially interesting and revealing, with their collections of drawings, photos, report cards, coupons, lists, cartoons, reminders, and aspirations. “Interesting, isn’t it?” I said. “A room tells us so much about who we are.” “It is sweet,” my wife added. We moved past a dusty treadmill and I said: “We display things that are important to us to prove we’re more or less okay. That we make sense. That we have value. That we’ve been here.” “It is sad,” she replied. The clutter, all the things that are worn out, the things we meant to do, all reveal this brokenness in our lives. Photos, a few trophies, artwork, some rare objects, show our pride, our few shining moments. “It’s a little selfish,” I said. “We collect all these things, but we’re only borrowing them for a while. When we’re gone, they go live with somebody else.” “That’s depressing.” “These rooms are future ruins.” She gave me that familiar look that said, “Lighten up.” As we exited through the living room, past the piano, a glass display case, and Christmas tree, I thought to myself: “What will people think when I’m gone and they sift through my ruins? I’m not sure I want to be defined by the artifacts I leave behind.”

Resistance

“Resistance is futile” says the Borgmother to Captain Pickard in Star Trek. Of course he must resist her : it’s a matter of survival. He must overthrow the invaders in order to save his ship and his people. To me, resistance is a double edged sword. If we resist too much we disconnect from the natural flow, or universal truth; if we resist too little we may expose ourselves to danger. Humans, in general, resist many things, not always consciously. We resist what is good for us, i.e. a healthy life style (good diet, exercise, fresh air, family time and rest). Or we resist what is bad for us, sweets, too much food, drinking, smoking, too much shopping, texting in the car, and other temptations.

Protecting Your Independence by Mary Layton

Vegetarians resist meat, meat-eaters have a resistance to vegis. We have a resistance to being in the present, to listening, to participating. Many people resist getting old. In childhood, when our mother tells us to go to bed when we are tired, we resist. Then, when we are teenagers, we want to be older than we really are and resist what we are being told, like getting out of bed, or getting our homework done. Some people resist to become adults, and like Peter Pan, never want to grow up. Resistance becomes a necessity when we have to defend and stand up for our values, beliefs and rights. In nature there seems to be less resistance. The flowers will not resist the sun, they need it. When the wind blows, the trees go with the flow. Resist or not resist, that is the question. The Road to Mt. Midoriyama by Sam Pierstorff #NinjaWarriorPoet If you want to be an American Ninja Warrior then wait. Wait until you are out of the shadows of your twenties when you hid in bars and libraries and went to bed drunk on poetry. Wait until your thirties, until you marry the woman of your dreams, until you are a tenured professor with children whose eyes brighten the future. Now, watch them grow, coach their teams, become dizzy as they run circles around you. You haven’t done a push-up in years, but today, with three kids on your back, you push yourself harder than you ever have before.

You rise and realize it’s not the weight you lift that makes you strong. It’s the weight you carry inside— a thousand pounds of love and experience and heartbreak—but you are still standing. You’re nearly forty now and the wait is over. There are no obstacles in front of you greater than those you have already overcome. So reach out, grab a rope like it’s your daughter’s hand. Hold on tight. Let the sound of your son’s voice lift you, “You can do it, Dad.” Focus. Balance. Stay strong. And when you face that final wall, warped and sky-high, do not be intimidated. You will get to the top if you keep trying— or maybe in that moment you will realize you’re already there.

MAMA

Reverend Horton Heat

by Middagh Goodwin Very excited for all the great events coming up in May and beyond. Check out the back of the Modesto View each month and one look at the Calendar and know that there is always something to do in the Modesto Area. With art, comedy, music and more you can’t truthfully say there is nothing to do in Modesto. There are some legendary bands hitting Modesto in May the first one is the ANGRY SAMOANS at the Brewhouse on May 17th. Formed in 1978 they were part of the legendary LA Punk scene that brought us the Circle Jerks, Black Flag, Descendents, X and more. Metal Mike(former Rock Critic) still fronts this snotty Punk band and still after all these years does not disappoint in entertaining a crowd of young and old. Joining them are Modesto favorites thrash punkers TRASH BOAT (members of Kid Mud/Before 20/Beneficial Medicine), Stockton’s favorites RED DEVIL LIE and THE CREEPOIDS (members of American Heart Throb.)

Later in the month one of the most anticipated shows to hit Modesto and Rockabilly Cruise Night at the Brewhouse is the return of REVEREND HORTON HEAT the king of American Rockabilly. The band originally formed in 1985 and is a touring machine, this is the 5th time the have played in Modesto and the second time at the Brewhouse. Touring on a brand new album “REV” released in January of this year on Victory Records. You can always expect a set of classic and new favorites a like from this powerhouse trio. Joining the Rev on May 28th are THE ATOM AGE(Asian Man Records) horn tinged

20

21st Century Rock and Roll; think the Sonics meet Rocket from the Crypt. Also on the Bill are THE(SECRET)HITCHERS(if you saw them with Lydia Loveless back in March you know how good they are.) female fronted Country Tinged Rockabilly and Americana from Stockton and Dj Vida Lee’s Jukebox Social spinning all night. Ending the Month May 31st at the Brewhouse E.A.R.L.(2007 FUNK/RAWK) will be celebrating 10 years of bringing it to the masses all over the 209 and beyond and they are bringing some friends with them to make this a party you do not want to miss. PEACEABLE JONES(2007 Punk/ Pop) will be reuniting to celebrate with their friends along with Los Punks del Norte and Baby Gurl. If these two shows were all you had to look forward to in May you would have an exciting month of entertainment, but of course there is always so much more. May 2nd at the Queen Bean Nic Padilla Promotions presents a MS Benefit Show featuring Bryan DeBaets form Renegade Conspiracy, Jimmie Menezes and more. Also on May 2nd NOTHING BUT LOSERS(2011 Metal), American Witch, Forever Obscured and more will be rocking the house at Spinnakers. May 3rd THE GOOD LUCK THRIFT STORE OUTFIT(2008 Americana) will be filling up the State Theater along with Pine Box Boys, The Sumner Brothers(Canada) and Cole Thomason. The last time they played the State it sold out and you can bet it will be a packed house and a party once again. May 3rd at Spinnakers Walk Away Alpha, Hang the Kode, Broken Trojan (2013 Rock), Incisus and Decimate the Opposition. More Metal and Hard Rock at Spinnakers on May 10th brought to you by Screeching Slay Bats (2013 Comedy) with NOTHING BUT LOSERS(2011 Metal), One Last Caress, Screeching Slay and the Nekrobats, Warbus and American Heart Throb. If you are in or want to make the short drive to Turlock KCSS Presents at the Grizzly Rock on May 10th JOSH ROSENBLUM(2012 Pop Rock), The Old Refrain, Mattea Overstreet, Viva Joaquin and

more for the 4th Annual Bandstand. On May 17th at Spinnakers BROKEN TROJAN(2013 Rock) are back at it again with Hybrid Z, 17Ten, Dying Image and Amenthes. BLUES & JAZZ

What’s new with Jazz and the Blues news

by Eric Benson

And

so it goes, spring flows quickly to summer and tomatoes are ripening on the vine before you know it. Still a chill in the air but soon we will be cowering, basking in the shade of 100 degrees under our umbrellas. Get ready for the summer concerts and farmer’s markets and long days of sunshine and heat, oh and hopefully a little rain. Spring break for those who can get away and well for the rest of us well it’s nice to have a job. Getting on with the business at hand despite a drought and still an economic drought as well, there is still much to be thankful for. Come out for some music or art because as Art Blakey, drummer for the Jazz Messengers said, “music wipes off the dust off of everyday life”, amen to that! Blue Monday monthly Jam continues at the Barkin’ Dog Grill with Cinco De Mayo, or May 5th in Engles with special guest Derek Rolando on Timbales, and congas. Derek has played with the Escovedo family, Dave Mathew’s, Oreste’s Vitale’s, and some of the hardest hitting musicians on the scene in the East Bay. Yes you guessed it, Blue Monday Jam goes Latin which will be served up with a heapin’ portion of Blues and R & B as well. The flav de Jour will feature our house band playing standards with Johnny Valdes on Jazz guitar, vocals & Kelly Ramirez on drums, the mighty Tim Allen on bass, vocals, Darnell Robinson on sax’s, and myself Eric Benson on keys and crowd control. It is an invitational Jam session so come down and sit in, network and hoist a glass to some good music. There may be some surprise Latin dancers coming down also. The State Theatre continues with community friendly booking with lots cookin for May. May 3rd: the Good Luck Thrift Store outfit with Pine Box Boys; May 9th Asleep at the Wheel; Paula Poundstone on the comedy side May 16th; Strunz & Farah May 23rd, and It’s a Beautiful Day May 24th. I be hangin a lot at the State this month! The Gallo Center for the Arts continues with their diverse booking in May with Keb’ Mo’ on the 6th, one of the better Delta Blues based acts on the scene today. On the West side, the West Side Theatre in Newman has a Bluegrass blowout on May

Patty Castillo on vocals, guitar; Sat 3rd & 17th: Tim Allen vocals, piano, with some Elton & Billy Joel; Friday 9th & 23rd Francesca Bavaro piano & vocals; Sat 10th: Third Party Acoustic Beatles with Chris Murphy and Gary Nelson; Friday 16th: Randy McMillan vibraphone duo; Sat 24th & 31st: Josh Rosenblum guitar and vocals; and Pat Durr of Homegrown with friends Friday 30th. The Wine Bar is a nice casual intimate setting to hear music with food and bar available. Best to call ahead for wine bar seating as seating is limited. On the Jam session front check out: David Dow hosting Barkin’ Dog Grill Jazz jam every Thursday night and the Queen Bean with Indie, acoustic jam every Sunday. Need to get at me with some info or questions: email me at: mbenson@fire2wire. com, or cell 209-918-7033. Peace out, Eric Benson

3rd with Red Dog Ash, featuring the Earl Brothers, May 17th: Sourdough Slim & Saddle Pals. Red Dog Ash is a hard swinging 4-piece that will get folks out of their chairs to do the Texas Swing dancing. For more info: 862-4490. Okay I’m excited! ACOUSTIC

Splendor In The Bluegrass by Aaron Rowan

Last autumn I spent a weekend volunteering at one of the many festivals sponsored by the California Bluegrass Association. What great times those were! Local songwriter Rainy Escobar is a good friend of mine, and her love of the genre has slowly imprinted itself upon me. I should like to see the genre have a greater presence in our city. We featured a bit of bluegrass at the recently wrapped MUMfest, but this month we’ll be doing a mini-festival called Sweet Sassy Bluegrassy. Saturday 5/24, a few bands will play various shades of bluegrass and old-timey sounds. With us will be Chelsea McBee from West Virginia, singing sweet harmonies with her sister; folkgrass duo The Littlest Birds, featuring banjoist Sharon Martinson (featured in the official 2014 Banjo Babes Calendar) complemented by cellist David Huebner (formerly principal cellist of the Disney Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra); Bay Area bluegrass/ folk outfit Old Belle; all-star string band revue The Mountain Men from Mariposa; and Turlock/Merced-based group The Poor Valley Band, who were lots of fun at MUMfest last month. Doors are at 6 and show will start at 7 PM at Prospect Theater, 1214 K St. Tickets are $15 advance, $20 at door. Email modestounplugged@yahoo. com to get yours. Saturday 5/3 - The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit w/ acclaimed Canadian folk group The Sumner Brothers, plus Cole Thomason and The Pine Box Boys at State Theater, 8 PM.

22

Saturday 5/10 - celebrate our rich agricultural heritage with a day of food, music, art and more at the centennial event of the Stanislaus County Ag Center. I’ll be cohosting the art & music stage. The performance roster is still being shaped, but our star headliner is Sarah Peacock, originally from Atlanta and now making a big splash in Nashville. She will captivate you with her gorgeous country-pop tunes. There will also be an array of local painters displaying works, wrangled together by artistic visionary Julie Hawk, my co-host of the art/music station. This free event runs from 10am to 4pm at 3800 Cornucopia Dr. off Crows Landing Rd. Friday 5/16 - acoustic listening concert with Megan McLaughlin, Steve Meckfessel and Rainy Escobar, 7:30 PM. See the Great Valley Songwriter Series FB page for info on this. Sunday 5/18 - house concert & potluck featuring Connecticut State Troubadour Kristen Graves at Hotel Euterpe. Call 209543-5306 or email crashdog3@yahoo.com to RSVP. Friday 5/30, see Patty Castillo Davis and Raylene Kemp, two of our finest local country-rock singer/songwriters and alumni of the Durango Songwriting Expo, in an intimate showcase in the round at Barkin’ Dog Grill. 7-9 PM, $5 cover for this ‘Front Porch Country’ showcase. Friday 5/30-Sunday 6/1 - the annual Riverdance Farms Pick & Gather event in Livingston will feature food, art, and acoustic performances by Patty Castillo Davis, Cottonwood Creek, Gail Dreifus and several more. FIT Heroes in Fitness by Efren Martinez

bike to work day

Thursday May 15, 2014 6:30am - 8:30am Tenth Street Plaza

28 year old Jose Jauregi always enjoyed staying physically fit prior to serving in our Armed Forces. Growing up, his physical fitness was more for fun versus being on any given team, but later in life he did join one of the greatest teams in the world, our United States Army. Jose fought with his fellow solders in Operation Iraqi Freedom. During the war Jose was a member of a cannon crew and field artillery. It was April 16, 2005, he and the other members of his unit were in battle in Ar Ramdi doing counter fire when they were all hit by an enemy rocket. After the explosion, all of their bunkered ammunition caught on fire while they were still inside. Out of their four-man crew, Jose was the only one who survived. Jose’s injuries included the loss of his left hand and 75% of his body was burned. It’s been a long road of recovery for Jose. He has had close to 100 surgeries and is part of a treatment program in UCLA called operation mend. He is getting the best of care and they’ve done most of his surgeries as well as rehabilitation exercises to help him regain better movement of his hands. This rehabilitation program at UCLA has helped Jose tremendously. Today Jose is still in treatment, but is now able to participate and enjoy cycling, indoor soccer, archery, and swimming as well as other fitness activities. In fact, he proudly shared with me that he’s done a couple cycling events with Ride 2 Recovery which included cycling from Chicago to Detroit and Palo Alto to Santa Monica beach. On May 30th through

June 2nd he will also be participating in the Valor Games in Oakland. His fitness events will include participating in cycling, swimming, archery and the biathlon. Sure it hasn’t been an easy road for him to get to this fitness point in his life, but he is a fighter with the heart of a true American solider that doesn’t acknowledge the word surrender. I asked Jose if he could share a few fitness words with other veterans who might be thinking about becoming more active in fitness. His message was; “The toughest part is getting started, once you are there, you’ve just got to stick with it.” Modesto View friends, I, like many of you, have the greatest respect for all who have and are currently serving in our armed forces. I invite you to join Jose and myself at this year’s Modesto Memorial Classic. It’s a 1-mile and 5K run/walk that includes entertainment, a pancake breakfast, and a veterans fair along with a children’s fun run. Proceeds in part go to The Modesto Vet Center. It happens on the morning of Saturday May 24th at the Tuolumne River Regional Park in Modesto. For more information please log onto www.shadowchase. org or like them here www.facebook.com/ pages/Modesto-Memorial-Classic/ Warm weather Fitness Tips Apply Sunscreen & Mosquito repellant prior to your outdoor workouts. Early morning & later evening workouts are best to avoided the hottest part of the day. Increase your water intake during the summer, double your hydration the day before your workout. Electrolytes should be part of your daily intake everyday www.facebook.com/QuakeFitness

Modesto’s Leos Club

by Leia Johnson

I am a part of a program called the Modesto Leos Club; we are basically the younger brother of the Modesto Lions Club. We are hoping to recruit some teenagers to join us in making the community a better place. We meet only once a month and do fun activities. The main reason our group formed was so we could help out people in need. We used “flocking” as a way to fundraise for our projects; Flocking is when people pay us to stick pink plastic flamingos in their friend’s yard. Using the $150 we earned from flocking; we went to Wal-Mart and bought kids who were less fortunate school supplies.

24

We supplied them with backpacks, pencils, rules, scissors, and more. The school was so grateful for our help. Soon we will all get together and clean eyeglasses to be distributed to developing nations throughout the world. Last time we cleaned over 2,000 glasses. We hung out, listened to music, and laughed while being able to help someone see better. These are just some of the wonderful opportunities you will have by joining the Leos Club. We also would appreciate donations of good condition prescription glasses. Did you know 153 million people worldwide are in need of corrective lens, but don’t have them. Lions and Leos clubs collect millions of eye glasses each year. If you would like to try Leos out to see if you want to be a part of it then you are more than welcome to join us for a day. We have a membership drive May 9th at Modesto Bowl. If you are interested in participating, donating, joining, or trying out Leos, call Karin at (209) 595-3202 for more information.

John Corbett will be here on May 8th at the Fat Cat Music and Lounge. His fans know him best as Chris Stevens, the DJ from Northern Exposure, the romantic lead opposite Nia Vardalos’ in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and as Aidan, Carrie Bradshaw’s boyfriend on Sex and the City, but John Corbett is also known as a serious country singer with two albums under his belt, including his latest, Leaving Nothin’ Behind. Join The State on May 9th, when Asleep at the Wheel rolls back into town for one night of westernswing the way only the Wheel can do it. The band has a new vocalist, Elizabeth McQueen, and they’re rolling down new avenues, including the critically acclaimed musical play, A Ride With Bob, which stars Benson as himself, and an adaptation of the Wheel’s repertoire for pops symphonies in Texas that have drawn record crowds. Visit www.thestate.org for more information. Center Stage Needs You Center Stage Conservatory is in dire need of a fundraising committee! The little theater Center Stage Conservatory’s Lower Level Studio, although located at the corner of 11th and J Streets in downtown Modesto, has no outside visibility and ticket sales for any of the events is never enough to keep the doors open. Help this innovative theater group stay in Modesto and available to entertain as well as teach our 5th year of CSYSC (Center Stage Youth Summer Conservatory) performing The Tempest this year and earlier this year performances of Cyrano. Go to their website and make a donation and/or call the studio 209-846-0179 and leave a message indicating your willingness to be a part of a fundraising committee. You can also contact Jackie Lieberman at 209-412-3479 to brain storm ideas. Thank you. Music in the Plaza is back at Fuzio Universal Bistro beginning May 2, every Friday night until August 29.
