I am sure you get it, but this just makes me smile. The #homeofstarwars hashtag is there for Modesto USA. Yes, friends every month, all over the world, people are talking about Star Wars and it all comes from Modesto. The stories of American Graffiti, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Star Wars all came from the imagination of Modesto native George Lucas. His love of comic book heroes and his childhood here in Modesto incubated this creative mind. So friends, we are creating a new holiday. On May 3rd, we will receive a special proclamation from the Mayor of Modesto Ted Brandvold commemorating May the 4th as a special Modesto day that is celebrated around the world. Who would have thought? Be proud Modesto, very proud. The force is with you. In other news, this is festival month! Wow. So much is happening and it is coming at us at hyper-speed. We love to laugh and we are so excited that we have teamed up with the Gallo Center and the producer of the SF and Seattle Comedy Competition to present a Modesto Clean Comedy Competition on May 20. ModestoView is not a spectator, we jump in and create events that make our city more fun to live in, like Rockin Holiday, the Cruise Route, Walk of Fame and more. This month, we have downtown bicycle races and family cycling festivals, the Chocolate Festival invades downtown Oakdale and of course, no May is complete without a special day for Moms. NON-PROFIT Community Hospice by Kristin Mostowski For over 36 years, Community Hospice has walked along side patients and families as they have navigated life’s end-of-life journey. Founded in a church basement by two volunteer registered nurses, Community Hospice has grown to meet the needs of the community becoming the oldest and largest non-profit hospice provider in the San Joaquin Valley. By Maryann Spikes There are several upcoming opportunities to show your support for local law enforcement - especially the May 21 “Standing with You” event! At Coffee with the Cops, my mom was able to put faces with MPD and City email addresses, including a few from City Council. She was also able to connect with Rosie Garcia, one of MPD’s invaluable Crime Prevention CSOs (Community Service Officers). If 9-11 response time is lagging, or to follow up after calling the non-emergency number (552-2470) one too many times for a recurring issue, try contacting your area’s MPD officers. Councilmember Doug Ridenour explained that the beat sergeants and area command lieutenants are in flux so officers are trained in all the different areas of law enforcement in Modesto. MPD regularly sends out updated maps to Neighborhood Watch coordinators. If that doesn’t work for you, your City Councilmember serves for four years. Find your district’s Councilmember at https://www. modestogov.com/council. The online version of this article will include the latest district maps (both for the MPD and for City Council, whose district maps are different) with contact information for your command lieutenant, beat sergeant, and CSO. We were also able to connect with Kaci Avrett (AvrettK@Modestopd.com) regarding MPD printing flyers for neighborhood meetings – and you can connect with her, too! The MPD also held their first Town Hall of the year on April 19 at Saint Joseph’s on Oakdale Road. We heard from several in the department, including Chief Carroll and Lieuten-

ant Raymer. They caught us up to speed on local crime statistics, what they’re doing about problem areas, and what neighbors can do to help, with Q&A throughout. Neighbor Steve Gerringer had this to say about the Town Hall: “How often do we have a chance to ask police officers anything we want? I appreciate the knowledge and tools the police shared — knowledge is power. Halfway through the meeting my wife turned to me and whispered, ‘This is awesome!’ And it was. Kudos to MPD!” Coming May 21: Standing with You! Appreciating Modesto PD, Stanislaus Sheriff Dept., & Modesto CHP MPD Chaplain Don Crooker started a wellreceived event last year that will be held again this year on May 21 at twelve strategic intersections throughout Modesto. All you have to do is show up at the intersection closest to your home with a home-made “Standing with You” sign. Besides making it out to Coffee with the Cops and Town Halls (and other community events), MPD proactively received body cameras in July of 2012, implemented predictive policing technology and returned to the use of area commands in 2011, and deploys armored vehicles (“Armadillos”) equipped with license plate readers. ART May Day! May Day! by Jim Christiansen May Day! May Day! That wasn’t your imagination last month that we published the March Art View Column in the April Edition with new photo. Unexpected April Fool’s Joke, but thank you to those of you who shared our online link to the April Column. Modesto View updates our online stuff all the time, and columns and articles, even photos archived on the web site. Thanks Chris Murphy for the quick fix post online as a reminder to readers we are a multi-platform media effort. So small recap from last month. Mistlin Gallery and Carnegie Arts Center has the Central California Art Showcase split between the two nonprofit art association galleries. You missed the April 1 Opening, and we didn’t have the awards list, but Brian Swander won Best of Show, and the show will run to May 27. 76 artists were accepted into the show, with 150 pieces displayed from the 338 entered. 2 Awards of Excellence went to Meisha Grichunin and Jane Zich. Awards of Distinction went to Robert Behee, Christine Obers, Christine Johnson and great image of Mark Twain by Phil Vance. Awards of Merit went to Steve Bauman, Tom Duchscher, Dan Petersen, Monique Wales, and six honorable mentions. This is an uncategorized show, so adding in the various media exceeds column length. Do Good Distillery is now open for tours! When you walk into the rustically furnished, homey space, you immediately sense what drives the family business: Ben Franklin’s famous quote, “You Do Well by Doing Good” graces the wall, alongside a photo of beloved friend and family, Officer Paul Roman Katuszonek. Paul’s love for bourbon fueled his passion to one day own and operate a distillery, but his life ended tragically on what should have been a normal, average work day. Led by former police officer Jim and his wife Liz, Paul’s friends and family came together to begin distilling spirits with the same fervor Paul did. Paul lived out Franklin’s quote daily, so it was only fitting to choose a name to carry such a legacy on. Do Good Distillery was born. Check out their website for information on their new tours, and to purchase tickets. Do Good won 2 Whiskies of the World awards late last year, and you will get to sample them at the end of the tour. Their Beechwood whiskey won Silver in Malt Smoked Craft, and Peat Smoked Whisky took home Bronze in Malt Heavy Smoke Craft, are the winning spirits.

My friend, Debbie Soro, had a dream of bringing the play, The Sirens to Gallo Center for the Arts. She held auditions and cast an amazing group of actors. The Sirens is a play that chronicles five women and their struggles with physical and psychological abuse and violence. The play is based on real interviews with victims of domestic violence by the playwright, Darrah Cloud. Ms. Cloud also interviewed police officers, attorneys, social workers and counselors at women’s shelters-all being agents in supporting survivors and affecting change. The show provides an intense look at the problems of domestic violence and illustrates that abuse knows no boundaries. It is present across all socio-economic levels, all races, genders, ages, and types of relationships. The proceeds from the shows will be used as a fundraiser for The Haven Women’s Center of Stanislaus County. Performances will be in the Foster Family Theater Thursday, May 5 and Friday,

izing. It’s like watching a conductor leading a symphony, but with booze. Ok, maybe more like a mad scientist, but if you really want to see some magic; and some of my fellow bartenders will probably hate me for saying this, but walk into your favorite bar and order a Bloody Mary. Why the Bloody Mary you ask? Because according to science, it’s the world’s most complex cocktail. Dr. Neil C. Da Costa, an expert on the chemical analysis of flavors, recently said in his presentation at the American Chemical Society “from the standpoint of flavor chemistry, you’ve got a blend of hundreds of flavor compounds that act on the taste senses. It covers almost the entire range of human taste sensations — sweet, salty, sour and umami or savory — but not bitter.” While primarily being known as a breakfast or brunch appropriate alcoholic drink, Bloody Marys are the source of many other disputes. From the exact origin, whether it be Paris in the 1920s, or America in the 1930s, to how it got it’s name, a reference to Queen Mary I of England, the actress Mary Pickford, or a waitress from a bar in Chicago. The biggest dispute seems to be what it takes to make a great one. Luckily I’ve been told I make a pretty good one and might be able to be of some service. According to the IBA, International Bartenders Association, a Bloody Mary consists of: 3 parts vodka, 6 parts tomato juice, 1 part lemon juice, 2 to 3 dashes of Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, celery salt and pepper. In his report Dr. Da Costa tells us that chemically, the

Bloody Mary is a “highly unstable” concoction, and the quality tends to deteriorate quickly. This means ditch the pre-mix and make it fresh! By using the freshest ingredients such as a good quality tomato juice, the drink will retain its deep, rich flavors. Also according to the good doctor, because of those bold flavors, the vodka’s flavor is often masked and choosing premium vodka doesn’t matter. Personally I like to infuse the actual vodka with a selection of handpicked spices or occasionally bacon as a secret ingredient for a traditional style Bloody Mary. However at Kimoto Sake and Sushi we use Japanese spices, fresh ginger and wasabi for a variation called the” Kasai”. The possibilities are endless. Just remember whatever you do, make sure to use plenty of ice because serving Bloody Mary’s on ice helps to slow down the chemical reactions involving acids in tomato juice and other ingredients that degrade the taste; and that a brunch without booze, is just a sad, late breakfast.

ARCHITECTURE Future of Modesto’s downtown is bright by Barrett Lipomi

We are in a very exciting time for Modesto and the revitalization of our downtown. Our city has been victim to a down economy most of the past decade watching local business close and storefronts vacated. However, there is positive change happening now. Over the past couple of years we have seen new restaurants, shops and business move into downtown…and succeed. As existing buildings fill up, it allows for new growth and development within the downtown core. This a great opportunity that doesn’t come along often, and if carefully planned and executed, is a chance to improve the architecture and livability of Modesto for generations to come. There is often the classic “chicken or the egg” discussion that comes up when debating what is the catalyst for improving our downtown. The chicken and the egg being which comes first: housing or more retail. I can see merit to both sides of the argument, but feel housing downtown is a real need. Ultimately a successful downtown will include mixed-use projects that incorporate both new retail and housing into their development. In the coming years we need to be diligent not to repeat past mistakes and as community push

for projects that will elevate design and quality of life. Budgetary spreadsheets and pro formas don’t tell the whole story about what is appropriate to be developed within our community. Design, context and sustainability should be at the center of each project. There are many great resources within Modesto including the Downtown Improvement District, Chamber of Commerce and now

the Modesto Downtown Partnership, among others. The more I have become involved in community and downtown organizations, the more optimistic I am about the future of our city. There is a real movement happening and I continue to meet more and more people with passion for our community. So I encourage you to become involved now to ensure a beautiful downtown for the future.

UNPLUGGED by Aaron Rowan Intimacy, Originality, Reciprocity - the tripartite motto of Modesto Unplugged. We have just wrapped our finest festival yet, and don’t have much happening in May, so I shall devote this column to talking about the stellar MUMF team members I work with, and our mission. Modesto Unplugged was formed to present the widest spectrum of live acoustic music, with a focus on intimate and listening-friendly settings. Whenever possible, we prefer small theater spaces, art galleries, etc. - any space free from the distractions of a restaurant/bar setting. We’re less fancy than the larger arts centers of the region, but with no less incredible talent, having featured Grammy winners, national champions of various instruments, and a number of standing ovation earners. When selecting our programming, original music is an important factor we look at. Unless we’re featuring bluegrass/old-time or world music (both of which we love, and which naturally involve a

plethora of traditional songs), we avoid cover acts in favor of quality original songwriters. The third cardinal virtue of Modesto Unplugged, reciprocity, is the most important, and it’s the main quality we look for when inviting a new team member to join us. It is crucial for local songwriters and presenters alike to attend and support each other’s events, rather than just their own. This is something I’d like to see much more widely practiced in our local scene. As jazz player Lennie Tristano said, “Sometimes the hippest thing you can do is not play at all. Just listen.” For us, it is all about the pure love of music. I’ve been very proud to know and work with these people over the past few years. Our current local team includes: Tina Driskill, curator of the superior Sunday Afternoons At CBS concert series; Sam Regalado, performing songwriter and our West Coast touring ambassador; Patty Castillo Davis, a MAMA Award-winning songwriter and senior cantor who once sang for the Pope himself; Marcos Alvira, area activities vice president of the California Bluegrass Association; Rhonda Hicks and Donna Phillips, board members of the Modesto Community Concert Association; Evan & Marie Maxfield, multi-talented

orchestra performers and conductors; Lisette Sims, staff member of Townsend Opera and an amazing singer-songwriter; Rachel Roseman, our ambassador to family/school programs; and our current tech staff - sound runner extraordinaire Mark Oesau, and photographer Patricia Sears, who has won many a ribbon for her sweet shots, and who boasts a phenomenal collection of signed artist photos she takes different music festivals, most notably Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. These are some of the busiest musical movers of our area, and yet have always impressed me by being among the most likely to show up and support. And I’ve spent many a night in the audience enjoying the lovely music which they

have to offer. They have all helped to shape the Modesto Unplugged programming, and lead it down new sonic pathways. Our one event this month worth mentioning is the latest in our ‘Music At The GMC’ concert series at the Gottschalk Music Center. Saturday May 7, we feature world-music harp master Amelia Romano along with the sitar and banjo looping sounds of Strange Bird this month. INTER Lonny Davis is a man on a mission, a smile on his face and a vision on how to make mobility available to so many that need it all over the far reaches of the globe. Hope Haven West is a fantastic local organization that delivers wheelchairs of all kinds, specifically made for people in developing countries. From Honduras, Ecuador to Guatemala and this year even Vietnam, 100% of funds contributed to Hope Haven go directly to placing people in much needed wheelchairs. These chairs change lives, and offer mobility to many that have never had it before. These chairs can make the difference between a life of poverty and early death and a successful life. Lonny is the owner of the Davis Guest Home on Hatch Rd. He has vast experience with the needs and situations of the mentally ill, and the old and failing. He is lending his experience to the Focus on Prevention programs and is an avid and dedicated Rotarian, a member of the Ceres Rotary. Lonny also believes in fun. Fun, in the way to raise money for Hope Haven and many other local organizations. As a former wild child in the summer of love, he followed in his family footsteps operating the guest home. He made connections in the 60’s and 70’s with famous musicians in recovery like Barry McGuire, (The Eve of Destruction) and others. His organization Uncle Lonny presents has produced shows by Marty Stuart, Roger McGuinn, Lawrence Taylor, It’s a Beautiful Day and even a “Day on The Green”. Now, he has created “The Portal” at the home of Hope Haven West, hosting music events that are closely guarded by the elder group of Portalarians, an X Wing Fighter and Marvin the Martian. Just who is this Lonny Davis? ModestoView: You had a very interesting past. How did you get from the Summer of Love to taking over the family business of Davis Guest Home? Lonny Davis: No one truly escaped the Summer of Love, we remain, “Waging Heavy Peace”. That said, at age 19 I experienced a spiritual collision, stimulating a character transformation and recalibration of my worldview. My friends were convinced that I had gotten hold of some bad acid. A stint in the army, ten years on the road with McGuire (Barry) and a bunch of spiritual renegades called the Agape Force, before my path led back to Modesto and the family business (Davis Guest Homes).

MV: How did you become connected with Hope Haven? LD: Sixteen years ago, a friend invited me to a sleepy little village in Mexico where he and a team were assisting the disabled poor. I witnessed the impact that mobility brought to individuals who had been abandoned to back rooms, or spent their days dragging themselves through the unpaved roads of their village. I knew I had to help. MV: Why did you decide to combine your love of music with creative fundraising? LD: Did I mention that you never truly escape? Everybody loves a party, what better way to celebrate life than getting together with friends, breaking bread, enjoying an adult beverage and listening to some great guitar licks? Those who have sponsored our “Uncle Lonny Presents” productions have become the financial life-blood for Hope Haven West and our work with the disabled poor. Shows like “Livingston Taylor” at the State Theater were an example of the quality of music experience we are committed to provide our supporters.

MV: How many people have been fitted with a Hope Haven chair? LD: Based upon the number of distributions we have completed, we calculate that we will distribute chair number 10,000 early this year. Hope Haven West remains “on track” to provide around 1000 chairs annually to the disabled poor with the assistance of our partners in the developing world. MV: You are an amazing volunteer, what is it that makes you want to serve others in the way? LD: I am not sure there is any virtue in what I am doing, honestly I have never been more fulfilled or energized in my entire life. I am writing this interview response at 4am, preparing to jockey a 26-foot Penske rental truck to the North Bay where we are scheduled to pick up dozens of discarded wheelchairs to be refurbished by prisoners in vocational rehab programs. The old adage that it is “more blessed to give than receive” resonates in my soul. MV: Tell me about your most amazing chair delivery moment? LD: There are so many. Each day of each

One that pops into mind is a little girl from the high Andes in Peru. Brought to our seating clinic from an orphanage operated by “Sister of Mercy” nuns (think Mother Theresa) this five-year-old angel was blind and paralyzed from the waist down (her parents had poisoned and abandoned her at birth in a trash bin). We were privileged to fit this little angel into her first complex rehab wheelchair. One of our group was listening to music on her IPhone and introduced our little survivor to rock and roll (did I mention we never escape)? Mesmerized by rock and roll, energized and enchanted with new-found mobility, we sent our angel back to her home in the Andes filled with hope, promise and the joy of discovery. MV: What is your inspiration for the Portal? LD: Inspiration? If you ask my wife, she would assure you that I truly am irrevocably mad. I am sure that she is tempted to give credence to the “bad acid” theory I mention above. Me, I just invoke the Deity and move on. MV: What role does music play in a vibrant community? LD: I just read an article by James Fallows in Atlantic magazine. Fallows lists eleven signs of “A city that succeeds”, he includes “Craft Beer” (I’m not making this stuff up) and a “Vibrant Downtown” - that formula includes live music. Modesto has a great tradition of contributing to the national music scene (arguably the home of rock-a-billy). We can build on this… Just sayin’. MV: What is one of your service goals you hope to achieve? LD: I would hope that one day before I pass through the “Great Portal” I might contribute to the reduction of homeless mentally ill on the streets of our city. I envision a community enabled, and empowered, to provide compassionate custodial care to those suffering from mental illness. I am convinced, we can do better. MV: How does your wife keep up with all that you are doing? LD: Really good drugs - no, just kidding. My wife (Lisa) is very long-suffering, patient, and persistent in insisting that I take care of

myself. She also is a fitness freak, in excellent condition, able to run circles around me, and one of the most disciplined people I know. Ride Modesto

Let’s make this easy. Modesto is a flat city. I think the net elevation change from east to west

Modesto may be about five feet. Simply put, the biggest hill you have to climb are the overpasses over the freeway. Modesto should most certainly be a bike town, but there is so much more to it than just putting in bike lanes. We need people to understand that bikes are part of the road network. And bikes need to follow the rules of the road. We need safe places to park bikes and there are good things happening as we roll out the new artistic and regular bike racks. Businesses should make it easy to ride, city planners need to connect the gaps in our trail network and motorists and cyclist need to respect each other. Most of all, we need to make sure that cycling is easy, affordable and safe. As kids, bikes were our freedom and in the current age of child safety, sadly we have lost some of this freedom. But it is time to get our freedom back and create safe routes to schools and better bike racks, better local bike trails, bike parks and create a cycling friendly city from recreation, to racing to commuting. Awareness is needed from both cyclists and noncyclists. So May is “National Bike Month” and let’s take one big change and embrace this opportunity to be a bike city. There are many weekly rides to go on, you don’t have to spend a billion bucks on a good race bike, cycling is the way to fitness if, like me, you have torn up your knees from years of abuse. Do you need a car at work? Could you ride? Have you check out the route you would take. The new bike lanes on College, although controversial, are really quite good and the new connection we have from East to West campus is solid. It starts with your first ride to the store, maybe the farmer’s market, or even a bike ride to school. So get your bike spiffed up, whether it is a cruiser, fixie, racing bike or just a clunker, it is all good when you are on you bike. Even if you never put on spandex racing shorts, get out and take a spin and enjoy the world around you. But please, wear a helmet.

Ride for Mom – May 7 This annual tradition was started 5 years ago by local attorney Bob Fores as a tribute to his mom Jinx, who passed away after a second battle with cancer. It will be held on the day before Mother’s Day, Saturday, May 7, 2016 and staged at Johansen High School in Modesto. The 10, 35 and 77 mile rides all include rest stops and support, swag and lunch. In addition, the RFM Organizing Team will be hosting early check-in and a pre-ride social event on Friday, May 6, 2016 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at McHenry Village in Modesto. http://rideformom.com/

Amgen Tour of California Team Layover – May 18

Modesto has been a fantastic host city for the Amgen Tour in the past and this year, we are providing the racers a stop over as the race transisitons into the central valley. Hopefully, this will help us slot of position as a finish city in 2017. Head to the Modesto Center Plaza and check out the team pits, watch the crews clean the bikes and team will be dining all over town. This is pro cycling and you should check it out on the evening of May 18th.

Bike to Work Day – May 19 You can meet Modesto’s new Mayor and ride to work. Meet up at Village Baking company on May 18 at 6:30 and join cyclists from all over as they commute to work via bicycle. We all need to do this more often. If we had good share car and community bike program, it would be even cooler. There will be prizes, and morning snacks in 10th St Plaza. From 6:30 – 8:30 am

The Modesto Criterium has been a part of downtown Modesto for over 30 years. ModestoView publisher Chris Murphy, then a college student at CSU Stanislaus restarted the long gone Tour de Graceada in 1983 and there has been racing on the big wide streets of downtown Modesto ever since. There will be two races on this weekend. You won’t want to miss the high-speed thrill action of a Criterium when you see the cycles speeding by on a short figure 8 loop in downtown Modesto. Lots of great viewing spots and there will be high speed sprints at the finish line. On Sunday, the racers will take to the farmlands west of Modesto with a start line on Hall Road off Kiernan. May is rad month for me. I was born in May, my pool opens in May, we start bbq’ing in May. The weather starts getting good but most importantly to me, it means it’s Mother’s Day and this month is all about mom’s in our scene. I was born the day before Mother’s Day and it’s always been an important day for me and my mom. In June 2004 I lost my mom in a fire and I would not be the music lover I am with out her and I’d like to spotlight some moms that make or have made our scene what it is today. Ask a musician who supported them the most while learning their craft and odds are they say “my mom” My waaaaay better half, Nikki Thomas of Kat Country 103 fame is a great example of this. Even though her daughter lives in North Carolina she takes time every day to listen to Hayley to play guitar via FaceTime and when she is here, Hayley is the guest of honor to just about every musical talent she enjoys, especially KISS!! Their bond comes from being a musical family. There is a group of ladies here in Modesto that is another great example, and I call them the nightmare moms! When the band Perfect Nightmare arrived on our scene, their moms were all in the front, braving drunks and mosh pits to see the kids play! Mari’s mom is always right up front at every show with her video camera. Stephanie’s mom, Francine can be seen with her family at every major rock show in the area (saw her at Volbeat last month) and former drummer Collin’s mom Amanda went on tour to Peru with his new band X Method! There are tons of examples of rad moms in our scene!! Andrea Rush is a proud mother of five and quite possibly the mother of our scene. Jennifer Allsup has always been a huge supporter of her son Eli’s many projects!

Eemjay Bell does makeup for Nothing But Losers and her two daughters love local metal. Jenna of Brutal Innocence loves bringing her young son to metal shows as much as she can. Jamie Salazar is a proud mom of two and on the weekends she belts out brutal death metal with her husband Joe as the singer of Bavmorda. Sylvia Spinnakers works hard every weekend to support her son at Spinnaker’s and she gets him band shirts every show she can! Rocky at the Other Place is another mom that is becoming one of our scenes favorite bartenders! I can go on all day and probably write a book about it, but most of all I just want to say Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms in our music scene! Without you we couldn’t do what we do. Our rich musical history is celebrated every October with the Modesto Area Music Awards; highlighting the legends and showcasing the youth. Comedy, Hip Hop, Metal; all share the same stages and many of the same fans. We are a community and if we work together to make things better then there will be no limits. Over the last year there have been a few new venues either letting bands play or expanding the amount of shows they do. Hangar BBQ, and Battered Beaver, both in Merced have shows happening just about every weekend. The GypsyShack moved to a new location in Sonora and are having something happen just

about every day of the week. The Whiskey Barrel Saloon and Blackwater Cafe in Stockton have expanded into new genres and doing more shows. Gottschalk’s Music,the Twisted Pig and Tilted Turtle in Modesto are also having more live music. Don’t forget Deva, Queen Bean, Minnie’s, Nino’s, P.Wex’s, Barkin’ Dog and all the other places that continue to let live music thrive. Music is alive, and will grow strong again but it needs you to support it. ROCKABILLY Ferocious Females in Rockabilly by Jennifer Allsup

Early pioneers of Rockabilly didn’t always run completely smooth. Women started making great strides in the early 50’s to be recognized for their talents. These women had the ambition to succeed in this genre of music. Women like Lorrie Collins started young and were very skilled. She started playing with her little brother Larry. A bit down the road Lorrie started dating Ricky Nelson for a short time, until she met Johnny Cash’s manager Stu Carrell and they got married. Lorrie has the hit “Mercy” back in 1958. Charline Arthur was another women with impact. She stood out from your basic stereotype female performer. Charline traveled with a medicine show playing eight different instruments. Women wore dresses on stage when performing back in those days, but not

Charline. Pants seemed to be more fitting for her style. She had the moves before Elvis came along, shakin’ that leg and thrusting her hips. Charline would sing rolling around on the stage floor. Sadly. Charline never made it into the mainstream of Rockabilly despite all her efforts. She continued to keep recording various songs like “Hello Baby”. Oh, the talents of a young Latina singer Rosie Flores. With a background of Western Swing and honky tonk it all made perfect since she was from Texas. Rosie¨ was in a cow punk band called Screaming Sirens¨ before she embarked on her solo career. “Crying Over You” put Rosie on the charts in country in 1987. Today, Rosie continues to perform and produce her music. One of my most favorites and possibly yours too is Wanda Jackson¨ The Queen of Rockabilly. Wanda was born in Oklahoma moved to Bakersfield Ca. and she played up and down the central valley and discovered the music of Bob Wills and others. In 1952, her

family moved back to Oklahoma where Wanda met and was mentored Elvis Presley who suggested that she sing Rockabilly. They dated briefly. In the past couple of years Wanda recorded with Jack White who is a musical entrepreneur that is kicking butt with musical adventurers. Wanda and her stage presences has not changed. She is still tearing it up with her performances. Remember, women are powerful, whether in music. motherhood or any another task we

take on. More and more women are becoming part of the music industry either on stage or behind the scenes. Support Women in Music.

A big brass band, in a bandshell, in a park, with food, drink, wine, and fun sounds like the perfect evening. Add to this 3,000 of your best friends, blankets, and picnic baskets and you have a hall of fame slice of Americana, or Modestocana as we like to say. June and July in Modesto’s Graceada Park bring the sights and sounds of the Modesto Band of Stanislaus County. Yes this is MoBand. It is our band, the sound of our city. We have many fantastic festivals, X Fest, American Graffiti, Lucky Fest, but MoBand is the top of the pops. There is really nothing like it. A Celebration of Jewish Food and Culture!

by Earl Matthews Hello everyone! May is here and it’s time to get the lead out and get yourself out to some shows. This month is going to be a lot of fun with all kinds of great excuses to shake your caboose. Since you can already see all the show dates in the calendar I am going to tell you about the bands themselves this month. Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood are a 3 piece rockin’ blues band out of Modesto and Stockton. These fellas are groovy and can keep you dancing all night. Jeramy’s kind sprit keeps the whole crowd engaged and coming back time and again. They have put out several CDs over the past few years and know more songs than just about any band I know. Plus they host the only weekly blues jam in the area, perfect place to join in the fun. Rob HIll Band is a Modesto favorite, playing a style of music the call Jazzy Blue. Which honestly sums up their sound wonderfully- it’s a mix of jazz, blues and a touch of Van Morrison. Rob and the boys can do big & danceable and they can do soft & moody. No matter what they are playing, it will be straight from the heart and full of soul. Mr. Shad Harris is going to be in town twice this month and I’m sure to be found at both shows. Shad plays with a few different groups in the Valley and in SF, including the world famous Doorslamers, house band at the Saloon in the Tenderloin. Shad’s band plays both classic and original blues with fun and feeling. Shad himself is quite a character on stage and can bust some great leads on the keyboard. Taj Mahal is going to be in Folsom this month, and I know it’s a bit of a drive, but if you haven’t seen him: do yourself a favor and go catch him. He is one of the greatest musicians of his generation and his musical flavor is so diverse that I truly believe that you could take anyone breathing on this planet to see him and they would love him. He is often sold as a blues artist but he truly is a world music artist, drawing on sounds and rhythms from around the world and sometimes other languages. He is one of my all-time favorite artists and if you take the time to check him out I bet he will be one of yours too. The Sunshines are making their Deva Cafe

Taj Mahal debut this month. Featuring members of the Rob Hill Band playing very different music. Think 60’s and 70’s soul and r&b for your dancing pleasure. Tiffany Rose is just about the most natural down home country/folk singer we have in this whole area. Tiffany’s smile and energy are as real and as infectious as anything I have ever seen and when she sings you will know that she feels the spirit all the way down to her feet. Blues Box Bayou Box Band is bringing the sounds of the Louisiana swamps to central California. Their sound is high energy and positive. If you like to dance, this is your band. It’s a little odd to write about my own bands, but I will tell you short and sweet. The Poorhouse Millionaires is an acoustic project, mostly. We play whatever we want, classic country, blues, folk and sometimes gospel too. The Cryin’ Shame is is an electric blues band. Our goal is to keep your head bobbin and your feet movin’ all night long. I hope that gives you all an idea of some of the bands playing this month in the area and please feel free to contact me and let me know about who your favorite local blues and root bands are in the area. I don’t know everyone and I am always on the lookout for more events to showcase in the ModestoView. One final note: many of you over the years have had the pleasure of attending shows at Rick’s Saloon in Knight’s Ferry and you may have noticed that it has been closed down for some time now. Well that’s all going to change on Memorial Day weekend. Back then there wasn’t all that much to do in Modesto if you were a teenager outside of school activities. Now that I’m an adult, the thought of playing tag in my teenage years may seem kind of silly, but that’s right up my alley since those of you who know me know that I am still a kid at heart. Friends, any one of our city playgrounds or especially middle and high school playgrounds can make a great outdoor gym regardless if you’re a Ninja poet or not. Here’s the challenge. I invite you to gather a

FIT Playground Fitness by Efren Martinez I got this great idea from a friend who’s a Ninja poet. He’s an English teacher by day and an awesome father and husband by night. In fact some of you may know him as Mr. Slam on Rye. Last year Sam Pierstorff had the opportunity to compete on a National TV series, American Ninja Warrior. Even though his spot didn’t air on TV, he was there giving it his all. From what I understand Sam’s idea to train for such a Ninja challenge didn’t take place in a gym but more so at a playground with his kids. As I traveled around Modesto one day, I noticed that our city has a great deal of fun parks with what could be challenging playground obstacle courses. This fitness idea isn’t really a new idea for me, it’s more of a deja vu memory. Back in high school, I and a few friends would head to Davis park at night and engage in a competitive game of tag. The rules were simple, if you got tagged you were it, and you couldn’t leave the sandbox area. I remember how chal-

Whoever was “it”, would climb up the fort to try and catch the other before everyone would scatter down below. Throughout the sand box area we used everything, the swings, slides and other playground equipment all as a buffer. Our games use to go on for hours and by the time we were done playing tag, we were all pretty much exhausted with some great fitness done and under our belts. Thankfully, none of us got hurt as we would chase, run, climb and jump from heights as high as 8-10 feet. Honesty back in high school playing tag for fitness wasn’t the real reason why we did it.

If you take the kids to the park, just don’t watch them play on those swings and slides, give those monkey rings and climbing poles a try. I’m sure you’ll find that just trying to keep up with your kids in play will have gained you some great memorable family time and accomplish some awesome fitness at the same time. “Tag,.. you’re it!”

ALL AGES Life Changing Summer by Leia Johnson The end of the school year is approaching and there’s nothing I’d rather do than study for finals! The best way to get through the long grueling hours of preparing for exams is to spend some free time enjoying the good things in life. I’m especially excited about the new room at Escape Modesto. Along with their “King Tut’s Tomb” and “Prison Break” rooms, they now have CSI: Modesto. Piecing together the clues of a murder, and finding your way out of a locked room sounds like an hour well spent. As you may have concluded from my previous articles, I love the outdoors and I love my friends. Over spring break, my group all got together and went to the Farmer’s Market. It was a day filled with fresh fruit, flowers, and photos, and will continue as a tradition. Check it out on Thursday and Saturday mornings on 16th Street right next to the County Library. Speaking of fresh fruit starting in May, Blueberry Bluff will be open for picking. This is a fun way to get your hands a little dirty...and without a doubt a delicious way as well. What better place to shop than in each other’s closets? Whether it’s a sibling or a dear friend, there are so many things you may

no longer want, but maybe a friend would, and vice-versa. You can do the same trading with prom dresses, for those of you who don’t want to spend a ton of money on a one-night event. Another fun place to shop would be a local thrift store, I consider thrift store shopping to be hardcore treasure hunting. Despite all these cool things that I’ve suggested to you, I encourage every student to study hard so that you can have a great summer and a great life! Maybe coordinating study sessions at Queen Bean or the Library will help you get that much more “prepared”. Finally, here are some songs that will get me through the last quarter “Magic” by The Cars and “Don’t Stop” by Fleetwood Mac. My favorite song right now is Dooley Wilson’s “As Time Goes By”, from Casablanca. Both the song and the movie are wonderful. What makes a person generous? Is it because he or she readily shares his or her material assets with others? Gives lavish gifts? Spoils the family and the pets? Donates to charities? Does generosity pertain mostly to the giving of material things? There is more to generosity than meets the eye. Searching for the bigger picture, I’m finding in the dictionary definition of vocabulary.com the following : “Generosity is a quality a lot like unselfishness. Someone showing generosity is happy to give time, money, food, or kindness to people in need. Generosity is a quality - like honesty and patience - that we all probably wish we had more of.” Notice that giving time is listed before money - it is easier sometimes to just give a person one’s money than giving them your time. Time as we all know is a precious thing, it cannot be accumulated like money. We cannot save it or stretch it. Once it’s gone it’s gone. I’m realizing that actually it is time to put a much greater value on someone’s willingness to give their time to me, or vice versa! But I’m still puzzled why often the less fortunate are more generous than the ones that really don’t have to worry about money. Is it fear that makes some people be misers? Is it may be the experience of scarcity as a child that is so

internalized and impossible to forget? People who have experienced poverty and hardship can often not shake that feeling that they must be frugal even if there isn’t any reason to be so tight now. Sometimes the exact opposite is true, people who were poor before and worked hard to reverse their fortunes do whatever they can to share their abundance, often without expecting anything in return. And sometimes, a person is just born with a generous disposition. It’s a quality you either have or don’t have. Can one learn to become generous? May be So contrary to common belief generosity is not only limited to sharing money, gifts and belongings. One can be generous with one’s knowledge, talents, energy and patience for others, helping them even when it is difficult. Someone’s presence and attention can be enormously enriching, even transform us. Then there is the kindness toward animals and plants as well as our concern for our planet, which also comes from a generous heart. Another way of describing a giving person is to say he or she is “large”. Being the opposite of petty, this person has an open, bigger vision of life and will be more accepting and able to handle challenging and unfamiliar types of situations. YOUTH Lemonade Day Modesto is one of the greatest events we have for the kids of our community. It teaches youth the entrepreneurial skills necessary to start, own, and operate their own business—a lemonade stand. In addition, they learn basic business principles, team work, customer service skills, finance and marketing practices. Over the last few years that we’ve had Lemonade Day in Modesto, we’ve learned how to make it better for the kids involved every year – and this year especially. This year Datapath and Center for Human Services have partnered together, hosting four separate registration events for participants to pick up their materials and get education on how to build a great lemonade stand business.

It’s a clean comedy competition. Yes, you read right, this is a competition to see who can make us laugh and keep it all clean. Translate, no S or F-bombs and stuff that is really funny. This is not just about clean comedy from some puritanical point of view, this is about making it big and getting famous. The Valley Talent Project 2016 Used to be known as the “Valley’s Got Talent”, brand new name, same great event! Co-presented with the Modesto Bee, it is the 7th annual edition of the talent show that dazzles the community each year while supporting the non-profit Gallo Center! Contestant applications are now being accepted. Cash prizes are awarded for the Grand Prize winner, as well as competitors in male and female vocals, small dance groups and ensembles, instrumental, band, original song composition, and specialty categories. The Valley Talent Project finals will be presented on Friday & Saturday, August 26 & 27. Audience voting will take place during the Friday show and the winners will be announced following the Saturday performance.
