Ill bet you didn’t know that I love Modesto. I love living here, raising my kids here and being a part of a community that loves to create things, get things done and most of all looks out for each other. Thank you all so much for the support last month as we Walked the Stage for United Way and Walked a Mile in Her Shoes for Haven. You were all so generous and we did some great work for great organizations. I love bikes. If you didn’t know, I grew up bicycle racing here in Modesto and during college as well. I loved that sport so much, that instead of getting a job as a systems analyst or programmer back in 1984 ( I know what you are thinking) I went to work in the cycling world, working at Raleigh, SR Sakae and then finally as Global Marketing Director for Specialized. So it is great pride that we bring the Amgen Tour of California back to Modesto as the start of Stage 2 – Modesto to San Jose. Please join our community on the morning of May 15 as elite cyclists from around the world depart our city. They eyes of the cycling world will be on us and we should be proud and Modesto is on the way to becoming a good cycling city. I love Star Wars. I was there at the Briggsmore Theatre in 1977 for the premiere and since then, the film and science fiction world has never been the same since. George Lucas had already made American Graffiti about

Modesto and then, he delivers Star Wars and becomes a global household word. Yes friends, Modesto is the home of George Lucas and Star Wars and we will be celebrating on our own special day, May the 4th. (You get this right?) It has been 40 years since the first Star Wars and it may be just one of the most famous things in the world and it came from a guy from Modesto. I love Festivals; Chocolate, Fruit and Nut, Apricot, music and art. These are the things that bring our community together so that we can all celebrate. Festivals, concerts in the parks and fairs all connect us and make us feel like family. We are getting ready for a big summer of fun as MoBand and Graffiti Summer are right around the corner. I love my family. This is really what everything is all about. Period. My life would not be what it is without my wife Rebecca and my amazing Murphy girls, Madison and Abigail. And now with Ryan, our family is even more complete. As May is Mother’s day, I celebrate what an amazing mom Rebecca is and what an excellent role model she is for our daughters as they become moms in the future. My mom, Char Murphy Tunison deserves an award for surviving raising me and teaching me curiosity and the value of learning. I owe my current life to my mother in law Vivian McNulty as she saw the potential in me that Rebecca hadn’t seen yet back in 1982 when I was a bike racing

college student. The person that I am today comes from all of these things. The ability to learn, understand and create makes life more interesting and hopefully I share that excitement and curiosity with all of you. We are all participants and we are here to share the good times and the bad and be there to support each other. I am grateful for the businesses that advertise in this magazine so that we can spread the good word about all of these things to you and your friends. We must tell our good stories and we need you all to share them. That is what creates community. So celebrate all of this that makes our community special and I thank you so very much for reading ModestoView and sharing your stories. We are all richer for it. The 16th annual Community Hospice Foundation Gala will take place on Saturday, May 20, 2017 in Oakdale, CA. Orchard Park Neighborhood Alliance - then and now By Maryann Spikes, Alliance Chair

Neighbors who live between Oakdale and Roselle, and between Floyd and Briggsmore, live within the Orchard Park Neighborhood Alliance boundaries. Almost 130 neighbors have joined Mike Casares’ Facebook group (Orchard Park Neighborhood), almost 530 neighbors are connected on Orchard Park Alliance’s Facebook page, and almost 800 neighbors communicate via Nextdoor.com. All neighbors received one of roughly 3,000 surveys we sent out in July of 2015, after we joined under Modesto Neighborhoods, Inc’s nonprofit umbrella. That mailer was generously printed by the Modesto Police Department, and St. Joseph’s donated the postage. We are still receiving survey submissions via our Google Form linked in the Welcome Packet pinned to the top of our Facebook page--have you added your voice? Our first in-person meeting with MPD was in Orchard Park on June 24, 2014, and several gatherings have followed, but we now hold monthly steering committee meetings every third Wednesday at 7pm, usually at St Joseph’s

Although we held National Night Out potlucks in the park in August for 2014 & 2015, in 2016 we wanted to start focusing more on holding NNO potlucks on our own individual streets to grow community with immediate neighbors in the coming years. All are welcome to have a rest on our new park bench placed in early February by the middle walkway overlooking Orchard Park’s soccer field. St. Jo’s generously donated the funds for that, too, and it was placed there not by a crane (due to heavy rains), but muscled there by a crew of hard-working Parks & Rec employees. Its dedication medallions thanking St Jo’s for their donation features Orchard Park Alliance’s logo designed by our treasurer Otto Werner’s son, Jesse, in May of 2015. For our first Love Modesto in the park in April of 2015, we weeded, sanitized, picked up garbage, replaced basketball hoops, pruned, and removed tagging. We did the same project in 2016, and a different project in the park this year raising funds for the Cleansing Hope Shower Shuttle and Feed Modesto. Did you donate? Never too late! Not all of our neighbors have homes, so Neighborhood Homelessness Engagement Training has been a focus since April of 2016, when the training was in its pilot stage of development. May Day! May Day! With all the Art Events converging on April, got a May Day message for Chris Murphy I’d gone past deadline. Holdovers still going on include the Central Valley Artist Showcase at both Mistlin Gallery and Carnegie Arts Center into the first week of June. Stanislaus Artist Open Studio completed this weekend, purchase awards drawing will take place once all raffle slips collected and distributed to winners in order drawn by first week in May. Attendance steady but impeded by the many events that went on this weekend. For those of you who say nothing goes on in our area, try

and schedule an event without a pleasant, busy conflict on nearly every date on the calendar. One I forgot was the Art Show in Escalon on Open Studio, and Peddlers Fair in Knights Ferry. Check the Facebook pages for Artists of Modesto, Modesto Artist Salon, and Stanislaus Artist Open Studio and of course ModestoView for updates our calendar might have missed at deadline. If you have an Art event, don’t delay in sending it in to our calendar at events@modestoview.com Check in with The Shire for their art events on Facebook. Fans of Art Walk included a Girl Scout troop that found me over at the Doubletree Hotel and from their passports for Third Thursday, nearly completed all the venues. Good to see Art Walk popular with new patrons of all sorts, but changes in the works to improve upon the event and other visual art presence in our community. We think this will expand the opportunities for artists to display, wider range of associated activities and more visible on the streets. Downtown has a couple related but separate Public Art Improvements in progress this month. Intersection of Art will be unveiled at Gallo Center May 12, with live music, vendors, presented by Leadership Modesto. The crosswalks will have a whole new look.

Downtown Partnership has a call for Artists due May 15th, for designs to apply mural décor to five downtown utility boxes. If you don’t know what that is, check out Jordi Camps design across the street from Picasso’s at Tenth and J Street. We hope more boxes around Modesto will get the same treatment. Tesoro Do Good White Rum Fruit Mojito Our friends at Do Good Distillery make a spirit for every purpose. We decided to go over the border at Tesoro Mexican Restaurant in Turlock. When you are thinking about your Cinco de Mayo, or heck, any day drinks, this is a new creation you really must consider. Let’s break it down with Angelica Valdez who with her husband Greg opened an amazing craft Mexican Fine Food restaurant on Lander Rd. The place is beautiful with hand made décor, great ambiance and a menu of food and a bar that will knock your socks off. We spent an afternoon with bartender Zoila Ramirez as she showed us her latest fresh fruit Mojito creation. Angelica sourced some amazing fresh strawberries and mangos and they mixed a fabulous cocktail. Rum is my friend and this Fruit Mojito is super friendly, smooth and absolutely the perfect refreshment. Crushed fresh fruit, hand muddled mint, special simple syrup and mojito mix with Do Good Rum. The DoGood is a perfect blend to the fresh fruit combination. You need to try both the strawberry and the mango. While we tasted these tasty drinks, we were treated to unreal Chile Rellano perfectly cooked. Their Molcajete is a mindblower and will be on our favorites list. Their specialty Par de Tesoros, chicken with Jalisco sauce and garlic butter shrimp is a hall of fame. You need to put this place on your short list ASAP. The food is fresh and the drinks are fresher. While we were there, they were hosting a fundraiser for a local school soccer team. We love the places that give back to our community. Give this place a try and you will be a fan.

Tye Bauer, owner of Bauers 66 ½ in Mchenry Village, has expanded his endeavors and just opened bauhaus, a beer and wine lounge next to the beloved Tangled T’s at 5-Points, in one of the most recognizable buildings in the city. And yep, it’s a lowercase “b”! You walk in and immediately pick up a “Cheers” vibe. With a very exclusive feel due to the smaller size of the venue, you are doted on by the bartender and chef personally, ensuring you feel special just for being there. Your food is made mere feet from you, and your beer poured at the end of the bar! With 11 taps that will rotate frequently, you can find something new every time you stop in. You won’t be bored with the beer selection either, each visit you’ll choose from you won’t find anywhere else. You can’t call this a restaurant, no, this is a lounge. The whole place is super comfortable, with pillows on the seats and extra in the windows. This is certainly *the place* to lounge too: under the bar are USB ports to charge your phone while you sip a few beers. (There are purse holders, too!) If you’re a Pokemon Go player get extra excited, because while

The tapas servings will revolve around small plates like in-house cured and smoked meats, ceviche and puff pastry to make things like pizza. On our visit, we snacked on mini peperoni pizzas and roasted potatoes with garlic and rosemary. Vegan options such as smoked tofu are also available. To wash our snacks down, we tasted a rainbow of beers. We started with the SLO Cali Weiss and a Common Hibiscus Saison. Our next round was a Last Call Stout and Anchor’s Blackberry IPA. (Brandi doesn’t usually order an IPA, but is a sucker for blackberry. She highly recommends this fruity IPA!) The White Sangria was refreshing, as well. You will thoroughly enjoy the simplicity and comfort of The bauhaus. This is where you will stop before you head to where you are going, and where you will go when you return from where you went!

DESIGN Modesto Invented Curbside Recycling by Lee Davis, Founder, Modesto Design School The first Earth Day on April 22,1970, launched the modern environmental movement. It’s also a seminal day in Modesto’s design history. The first “Survival Walk” began that day with activists walking down the Central Valley, through Modesto. The six-week walk from Sacramento to Los Angeles was organized by Ecology Action, founded by UC Berkeley student Cliff Humphrey with a group of eco-designers and activists from the College of Environmental Design to promote household recycling practices. As Humphrey passed through Modesto, he saw potential for a local market for recycled newspapers, cans and glass, and vowed to return to transform Modesto into a “model of ecological sanity.” Humphrey had become somewhat of an eco-design icon following his pointed speech at the renowned International Design Conference Aspen (IDCA) in 1970 where he decried the complicity of designers in “ruining our life support system,” sparking a national debate about the wider social and environmental responsibility of designers. Later that year, he relocated Ecology Action and his family from Berkeley to Modesto. His subsequent efforts would place Modesto on the cutting edge of recycling before it was commonly accepted or economically feasible to do so. Modesto became the first city in the country to offer curbside collection of post-consumer recyclables. From a modest office in the Roseburg and Tully Shopping center, Humphrey designed curbside pickup to make recycling more efficient and convenient for residents. He hoped that the simple task of sorting garbage would make people more environmentally conscious. This was not a small undertaking in “conservative” Modesto at a time when the concept of recycling was still novel.

He met early resistance and skepticism from city officials and the public. “If we can make recycling work here, it will work anywhere,” Humphrey said. Early supporters of the recycling program included city councilwoman Peggy Mensinger, Mayor Lee Davies, Gallo Glass, the Stanislaus County Medical Society, YMCA, Unitarian Church, and Boy Scouts. Ecology Action put the first route into operation with a pair of secondhand trucks and ultimately operated curbside service across all of Modesto and the surrounding area. Recycling became a Modesto institution, a part of the community’s daily routine, and changed resident’s ecological consciousness. Modesto’s innovative program was replicated by cities across the country and helped to catalyze a national movement in curbside recycling. It was featured in LOOK magazine in May 1971 with the headline “This Town’s Hooked on Garbage Power!,” stating that “Modesto is going bananas over recycling.” Humphrey was later named “Recycler of the Decade” at the first National Recycling Congress in 1980 and is widely recognized as “the grandfather of recycling” for the innovative community recycling programs he started here in Modesto. Modesto misses Vito’s, but in its place is now the Bayou Bar and Grill, filling a need Modesto didn’t even know it had. With Chef Christopher Bonora at the helm, we will now be spoiled with local Cajun food in the heart of downtown. Their menu will feature traditional dishes like jambalaya, gumbo, and oysters, but will offer pizza, burgers and pasta to satisfy even the pickiest

of taste buds. Owner Mark S. Nelson and his son are leading the team at the restaurant with the ever delightful Diane Marcuerquiaga running the house. Chef Christopher was born and raised in Modesto. He took an active interest in cooking and working in the kitchen at an early age. He opened his first restaurant (the legendary Benni’s on Yosemite), back in the late 80s,

along with his brother, Daniel. Second, he opened Christopaolo’s in Ripon. He even had a pop up version of Benni’s called Piccolo Benni’s over the last few years. His place in this kitchen brings back memories as he once had Oceana Bar and Grill in the same location where the Bayou is located today. novative and there are no shortages of amazing flavors and smells. You walk in the front door and you know you are at home. The décor is all Bourbon St, the cocktails are a wonderful blend from the top shelf to the “Swamp Juice”. You will not regret your choice to partake in any of the delicious delicacies that the Bayou Grill has to offer. We had to go back a second time just to sample more of what the menu had to offer. The Jambalaya was savory with just enough of a spicy kick to make your mouth water and have you diving in for another bite. With Cajun seasoned sausage, chicken and a generous amount of clams and shrimp, it is served in a skillet over their house rice. The Pulled Pork Po’boy will be a favorite for sure. It comes on a sweet torpedo roll overflowing with the Bayou’s own pulled pork and topped off with Louisiana Slaw. I had the Bayou Mac & Cheese (I suggest you pay the extra $2 to have them add bacon.) They have traditional favorites like Salmon Marsala and you can even get them to put grits on the side. The Grits at Bayou are right out of Louisiana. When we asked for recommendations, Chef Christopher said, “you should pay attention to the Daily Specials”. Make a note to do this fellow diners. We also had the Mixed Fry as an appetizer and it was some of the best Calamari, Battered Shrimp, and what I believe were white fish and onion strips battered and all deep-fried to perfection. Served with Shrimp & Tartar Sauce. Next time you feel like having something out of the ordinary do yourself a favor and head on down to the Bayou. Cocktail friends will recognize one of our favorite bartenders Ben Mello behind the counter making the house favorites and yours. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Kat Country 103! For quite a while Kat Country has thanked it’s listeners with an annual free country music festival called the “Listener Appreciation Concert”, or LAC for short. Each show has been unique, fun and memorable. And this year will prove to be just as fun, featuring three time Grammy Nominee Joe Nichols, the band Parmalee, an all female trio called Runaway June, American Idol’s Lauren Alania, and new comer Bailey Bryan taking over the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds in Turlock June 3rd. The stage of the LAC has proved to be a launching pad for many new country stars whose careers have taken off after playing the LAC and most of it all began right off Canal Drive in Turlock. In 2007, I remember vividly a young lady in a sundress and red cowboy boots walk onto the LAC stage, grab the mic from the stand and open her set by rapping Eminem’s “Lose Yourself ”. The crowd didn’t know what to think, but they loved it! She abruptly stopped and said, “…I write songs about boys…” and played her latest hit. Another memory from ’08 was tall, 6-foot 10inch Good Ole Boy that was preparing for his stage introduction. Backstage this up and coming singer walked past the ramp that would lead up to stage-right and instead, walked directly to the rear of the stage, took off his cowboy hat, crouched down and squeezed himself into a some sort of box/contraption underneath the stage. As I looked at him, puzzled, he said, “First impressions are a bitch when you’re tall!” Suddenly the band kicked in and the under-stage mechanism he was in began to rise. The crowd saw him appear from out of nowhere as he strummed his first of many hits to come. In 2009 a young, rebel of a new country artist walked into the Kat Country tent for an interview and I knew right away he was unique. While I was asking him about his music and his road from Nashville to the Central Valley, I could tell by the way he looked directly into my eyes with every answer he was a singer that knew exactly who he was and where he came from. Later when he took the stage he asked, “Are you ready to get weird…?” and the crowd cheered as the band rocked Turlock. In 2010 an unknown Family Trio was on stage at the Stanislaus Country Fairgrounds giving 20,000 LAC fans a high-energy show. The electricity from the crowd spurred them on to keep pushing their performance to the point that when their set ended, they ran off the stage dripping in sweat, smiling ear to ear and exclaimed, “That’s the Biggest crowd we’ve ever played for!”

Those are the memories of these new country artists that tens of thousands of Kat Country fans all have shared. Oh, and who were those new, up and coming artists? Just Taylor Swift, Blake Shelton, Eric Church and The Band Perry! Other promising artists from the past also include Toby Keith, Rascal Flatts, Jon Pardi and Lee Brice just to name a few. Who knows how much luck the LAC stage will bring to these new artists that are playing this year, but the track record so far is a pretty good one. And almost all of those memories were made in Turlock.

METAL by Eve Oberlander Metal heads and music lovers alike, check out the first ever MUSICMANIA an event for music lovers in Central California. This record fair event will take place at The Portal (1324 Coldwell Ave.) in Modesto on Sunday May 7th from 10am to 6pm. UNPLUGGED Roosevelt’s Got Talent by Aaron Rowan

Two months ago I was invited to join the panel of judges for the annual ‘Roosevelt’s Got Talent’ competition, held at Roosevelt Junior High. International opera performers Roy Stevens and Annalisa Winberg oversee this contest, and mentor students as they share their gifts of song, dance and more. It was quite an interesting experience to help with the selection of the prize winners. One of the grand prize awards went to a young lady named Kalea Jackson, after her rendition of “How Far I’ll Go” from ‘Moana.’ For the past five years Kalea has been perform-

ing with the Davis High Drama Club, Modesto Performing Arts, and Gallo Center Repertory Company. After hearing her perform for the first time, I knew I was going to invite her to open a ‘Music At The GMC’ concert. You’ll get the chance to hear what this gal can do on Saturday May 20, at 7:30 PM in the Gottschalk Music Center’s recital hall at 1502 E St. This small DIY space has seen numerous evenings with talent worthy of the Gallo Center stage. It’s one of the few places around town where you can enjoy a listening-room concert experience free from the noise and distractions found in the bar/restaurant music scene. Headlining the night is local Townsend Opera alum Liisa Dávila. As a young, award-winning soprano, Liisa is quickly gaining recognition as a highly sought-after entertainer who delights her audiences with riveting performances. A winner of multiple competitions, Liisa is a recent San Francisco

District winner and a Western Regional Finalist for the Metropolitan National Council Auditions and the prestigious West Bay Opera’s Maria and Ben Holt Scholarship. Ethan Beavers - Comic Artist

With the Anniversary of Star Wars and the Explosion of Pop Culture Events in Modesto and all over Northern California in the last few years it is quite appropriate to have Ethan Beavers as our May interview. Ethan is a Comic Book Artist who calls Modesto home. He has created art for DC, Darkhorse, Cartoon Network to name a few. His portfolio includes Batman, Wonder Woman, Indiana Jones and Star Wars. MV-What are you working on currently that excites you? EB- I’m working on a 3 book Graphic Novel series for the American Taekwondo Association. It’s published by Rodale and is called ATA Tigers. It’s about a team of talking animal kids who learn about life and Taekwondo. The Characters are designed by Eric Wight, who worked on a ton of animated cartoons at WB and CN. He and I worked on an issue of Buffy the Vampire Slayer together- Jeph Loeb wrote the script on that one. MV-Are you inspired by anything new? EB- I’m inspired by everything new. I consume

a lot of movies and books- not too many cartoons these days. The internet is a great place for inspiration. Instagram has an overwhelming number of incredible artists who are cranking out amazing work. Looks like lots of art schools stopped teaching students to be hippies and actually inform kids on how to draw. I hear the tuition is murder though... MV-What are your thoughts on being a comic artist in today’s world? EB- In the history of the planet, there’s never been a better time to be a comic artist or for that matter, any other type of artist. Comic Hero movies are loved by the entire planet. Between the Art Walk type shows, the Comic Con/Pop Art events, Social Media/internet, and the old print stuff, almost anyone, regardless of talent level, can make a buck. Also, the demand for Artists has never been greater as new avenues have been created- particularly in Video Games and Film. MV-What art movement or artist would you say influenced your work most? EB- Bruce Timm comics and Genndy Tarta-

kovsky cartoons. Those are the two main guys in terms of what put me where I am today. My mind exploded when I saw Mad Love on the shelf in ‘93. My mind blew up again when I saw my first episode of Samurai Jack. I committed myself to becoming a professional soon thereafter. MV-What is your background, where did you start as an artist? EB- I started drawing when I was a child- very young. Kindergarten type age. I did Art class in High School and Modesto Junior College, but most of my training I did on my own. Mostly self-taught.

would be a part of the Star Wars Universe? What does it feel like to be a part of the Lucas Lexicon? EB- I never set my sights as high as Indy and Star Wars- not in my wildest dreams. I’ve surpassed my career expectations so many times I’ve lost count, which is great for me creatively because I am such a big fan of those films. MV-What have been some of your favorite projects to work on? EB-Obviously, my first job at DC Comics. Another was when I worked on an episode of Justice League Unlimited at WB. I couldn’t believe I actually got hired to work on the Samurai Jack Comics. Illustrating the NY Times Bestseller NERDS as pretty great. Artistically I took a quantum leap forward when I finished my first Little Golden Book. That was Batman, and I’ve done most of my best work on the five or so I’ve done thus far. I’m illustrating a Flash LGB soon. MV-Where can someone find your work and or be able to commission a piece if they are interested? MV-What has been a Seminal Experience? EB- My most important experience was probably when I first showed my work at Comic Con in about 2002 or so. MV-How is it being an artist living in Modesto? EB- Meh. There are some advantages is terms of Comic shows popping up everywhere in CA these days. Other than that, It’s kinda meh. MV-Have to ask. Bring the kids out to Free Comic Book Day May 6th taking place at Bonanza Comics and Books on McHenry and Invincible Comics on Orangeburg and College. Both will be giving out Comics 10 am until 4 pm. Bonanza will have members of the Central Valley Costumers, 501st. Costume Heroes will appear from 10-12 and Comic Artists will be on hand until 2. Author John Harrison will also be in attendance signing copies of his books. Invincible Comics will have the NorCal Cosies hosting a costume contest at 2 pm. Several artists including Allen Passalaqua, Adam Harris, Harold George, Patrick Barr, Kristy Moore and Micah Mate will be selling art and taking commissions. This is a great way to get back into reading comics or to introduce a new generation to this unique American medium.

This annual tradition was started 6 years ago by local attorney Bob Fores as a tribute to his mom Jinx, who passed away after a second battle with cancer. It will be held on the day before Mother’s Day, Saturday, May 13, 20167 and staged at Johansen High School in Modesto. The 10, 35 and 77 mile rides all include rest stops and support, swag and lunch. Modesto has been a fantastic host city for the Amgen Tour in the past and this year, Modesto is host to Stage 2, a grueling run between Modesto and San Jose. This is a fantastic event as at the start, every cyclist from around the world must sign in, and that means that cycling fans can see every rider. You can watch the riders warm up, get the bikes ready and see the team vehicles. This is a warm up for the Tour de France so all of the elite cyclists will be here. The race starts at 11:45, so you will want to get a spot along the downtown circuit where the riders will take 2 parade laps lead by a classic Graffiti car and by a line of classic cars before heading under the Modesto Arch and out Paradise Road to Carpenter. There will be lifestyle festival all morning along I St at the Gallo Center so you can be in the middle of the cycling excitement.

After the Amgen racers leave, the racecourse will be opened to the community to do a cycling cruise. You can meet Modesto’s Mayor and ride to work. Meet up at Village Baking Company on May 18 at 6:00 and join cyclists from all over as they commute to work via bicycle. The Modesto Criterium has been a part of downtown Modesto for over 30 years. ModestoView publisher Chris Murphy, then a college student at CSU Stanislaus restarted the long gone Tour de Graceada in 1983 and there has been racing on the big wide streets of downtown Modesto ever since. There will be two races on this weekend. You won’t want to miss the high-speed thrill action of a Criterium when you see the cycles speeding by on a short figure 8 loop in downtown Modesto. Lots of great viewing spots and there will be high speed sprints at the finish line. On Sunday, the racers will take to the farmlands west of Modesto with a start line on Hall Road

A Christmas Carol, December 2015, Modesto Performing Arts: Brad Hight, Michael McGrath, Moe Perez, Chloe Willey, Nicole Giordanella, Jon Duran, Ray Sheen, Haley French, and Shannon Wren. When an audience sits down to watch a live performance they each experience something different and each time they watch the same show, they see something different than the time before. That’s the beauty of a live performance. That’s what makes them exciting and often magical. What the audience doesn’t see is all of the crew who make that magic happen. Unless of course, someone makes a mistake and suddenly everyone is staring at the guy with a fauxhawk, dressed in black jeans and a black tshirt, holding an 18th century chair on the lit stage while the Queen of England enters stage left. Um, awkward? It happens. Who’s at fault? Who knows. It could have been the spotlight crew that lit early, or the stage manager called the spot early, or maybe faux-hawk guy missed his cue - the audience will never know. What they do know, hopefully, is that until that moment, the crew was so seamless, so GOOD at their jobs that they were invisible. But they’re there - every single time. They run the soundboard, the lighting, the spotlights, they move props and sets, they work the rails to fly in scenery or effects or to lift and lower legs, they close and open the curtain, and usu-

ally the crew even helps build and strike the set. They are everywhere, doing everything, except being seen. They are the unseen and unsung heroes. As we close out the high school theater season and begin the jam packed summer community theatre season, there are still a few spring shows to catch in the Modesto area. Go out into our community, watch a play or a musical, enjoy a live performance but forget everything you’ve just read here. Don’t wonder about spots, lights, fly rails, mics, props, or sets. Because you shouldn’t, you should forget them, that’s what they want, but the next time you are walking by a stage door and you see someone dressed in all black, maybe say, “The crew did a great job tonight! Thank you!” Because chances are, they did, you just didn’t see it. Blue Monday Invitational Jam returns to the Barkin’ Dog Grill this May 8th with Ultra Lounge and special guests on the Latin side. We will be doing a belated Cinco De Mayo celebration on the Monday following the 5th with Cuban virtuoso pianist Gustavo Ramirez, Cuban master percussionist Carlos Caro and Danilo Pais on lead vocals and percussion. We will be playing Jazz, Blues, R & B, and a whole lot of Latin music for listening and dancing. The 7-piece house band is a super group of all the best players in the area. Given her personality, past history, circumstances and responsibilities she does the best she can. Since my mother passed away last year I appreciate her even more and realize how much she taught me, including the ability to have compassion - to accept people, including myself, as they are and still love them. FIT It’s Run Time by Efren Martinez This May gives us plenty of opportunities to get

your run on for a good cause. We all know how healthy running is, but did you know it can extend your life too? According to the research that will be presented in Dublin, Ireland on Saturday, May 5th at a conference, small amounts of easy running done consistently can extend your lifespan by as much as six years. In the latest analysis of data from an ongoing study of residents of Copenhagen, Denmark, researchers found that those who reported running one to two-and-a-half hours per week had an increased life expectancy of 6.2 years for men and 5.6 years for women, compared to sedentary residents. (source: Runners World) So get off your astronauts and run for your health and a longer life span. On Saturday, May 13th, in Ripon is the 10th annual Rina’s Run 1/2 marathon, 10K & 5K. All finishers will receive a Finisher’s Medal, race shirt and post-race refreshments. There will also be a Vendor Faire full of great things for everyone to enjoy. Overall winners receive cash prizes and the top three finishers in each age division will receive a medal. Event benefits in part The Ripon High Stadium Project. Then kick off the Memorial weekend right on Saturday, May 27th, with the Modesto Memorial Classic 1-mile & 5K run/walk with pancake

breakfast included for all paid runners. Back again will also the children’s free Frito Lay Chester Cheetah fun run. Note! This year because of recent flooding, the run will be held at Johansen High School Foot Ball Stadium in Modesto. According to one of the race directors, Barbara Miller from The Shadow Chase Running Club, the course will be run from the stadium leading out to the surrounding area just behind the stadium. The runners should enjoy this new temporary route without having to deal with the associated squirrel crossing. Event benefits in part the Modesto Vet Center, which helps returning combat veterans and their families. Prize money to top 3 men/women finishers and 1st master’s (over 40) finishers in the 5K. This month I have one main focus: Literature. Music and books are huge influences in my life. Now with the end of school, I have the ability to devote time to these interests. Music is what I breathe. Before I could form words, my parents were filling my ears with The Beatles and Disney soundtracks, along with my dad’s frequent guitar playing. To this day, whatever I am up to, music seems to weasel its way in. Last month, the ‘British Invasion’ tribute concert was at a new local venue called ‘The Portal’ and I was in awe at how cool the lot was! Thankfully for us, there will be another all ages music event, “Let’s Celebrate Life” at The Portal (1324 Coldwell) on May 13th at 6pm! For only $10, experience two stages (indoor/outdoor) and a ton of killer local artists. Another glorious thing about this event is that all the proceeds from the bar benefit ‘Hope Haven

West’, which is a program that provides wheelchairs for people in need all over the world! I hope to see you there, this is an event that you won’t want to miss. I am so excited to see that ‘Little Free Libraries’ have been popping up all over the Modesto area. This is an innovative, communitybuilding movement that you can begin, or take part of. Little Free Libraries are small, house shaped boxes in people’s lawns that are filled with books. The books are up for grabs, as long as you have another to donate to the Library. This is such an awesome way to share the love of knowledge, I highly recommend you participate in this fun movement. https://littlefreelibrary.org/ourmap/ This website presents you with a map of all the Little Free Libraries in your area. Many restaurants start serving dinner early so that you can get a nice meal in before the shows and movies that begin at 7 or 7:30.

Downtown Modesto is the place to be late Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. There is live music every night of the week in one of our great clubs or restaurants. After the show, stop and enjoy a nightcap.

A big brass band, in a bandshell, in a park, with food, drink, wine, and fun sounds like the perfect evening. Add to this 3,000 of your best friends, blankets, and picnic baskets and you have a hall of fame slice of Americana, or Modestocana as we like to say. June and July in Modesto’s Graceada Park bring the sights and sounds of the Modesto Band of Stanislaus County. Yes this is MoBand. It is our band, the sound of our city. We have many fantastic festivals like American Graffiti, Lucky Fest, but MoBand is the top of the pops. There is really nothing like it. The blankets are out early, the wine is ready, the picnics are made and the music starts at 8 pm, for six Thursdays. MoBand has been going strong since 1919. Yes, Modesto, we have a national treasure. How many of your friends in other cities have a huge community cultural event like this? I’ll bet not many. Get your calendars out and plan your summer. Music starts at 8 but get there early.

June 13 – Mancini Bowl MoBand needs you. It takes a lot of time, effort and money to make MoBand happen and here is where you come in. Please come out and support Night at the Bowl on June 13th in Mancini Bowl. There will be restaurant sampling from Modesto’s best eateries, wine and beer from Modesto’s best wineries and breweries and music from Third Party and the Highway 99 Band for your entertainment enjoyment. You can even dance on the famous Mancini Bowl. Tix are only $40 and you can get them at the 4th Floor Parks office at 10th St Place or from a MoBand Board of Director.

Go Downtown Modesto Jane Seymour will join more than 600 community

leaders and champions of women’s heart health for the American Heart Association’s Modesto Go Red For Women Luncheon on Friday, May 12 for a day of learning and empowerment against women’s leading health threats - heart disease and stroke. She will also serve as special guest for an Open Hearts Winemaker Dinner the night before the luncheon, Thursday, May 11, hosted by the Gallo Center for the Arts.
