MoBand is Coming – June 7th By Chris Murphy
A big brass band, in a bandshell, in a park, with food, drink, wine, and fun sounds like the perfect evening. Add to this 3,000 of your best friends, blankets, and picnic baskets and you have a hall of fame slice of Americana, or Modestocana as we like to say. June and July in Modesto’s Graceada Park bring the sights and sounds of the Modesto Band of Stanislaus County. Yes this is MoBand Concert in the Park. It is our band, the sound of our city. We have many fantastic festivals like American Graffiti, Porchfest, Lucky Fest, but MoBand is the top of the pops. There is really nothing like it. The blankets are out early, the wine is ready, the picnics are made and the music starts at 8 pm, for six Thursdays and thanks to MoBand Sponsors and the Night at the Bowl
fundraiser (see below) these are FREE. MoBand Concert in the Park has been going strong since 1919. Yes, Modesto, we have a national treasure. How many of your friends in other cities have a huge community cultural event like this? I’ll bet not many. Get your calendars out and plan your summer.

A women’s heart can change the world even after she’s gone. Thank you Patty Scott for instilling kindness and compassion in the heart and mind of your daughter, Alana Scott; president and founding member of Women’s Education & Leadership League (WELL). The summer you helped your neighbor through financial hardships after losing their business, is the summer you changed the world through a nonprofit organization created more than a decade later. Though you were no longer around to see the successful nonprofit that gives in your honor, your purpose to empower and help others lives on through WELL. Happy Mother’s Day, Patty.
The inception of WELL was inspired by the desire to help woman conquer common struggles through uncommon giving in time and knowledge. After helping a woman overcome financial illiteracy in already defeating circum-
stances, Alana knew she needed a medium to sustainably serve more women. “There was a woman going through a tumultuous experience with nowhere else to turn. I was fortunate enough to rally many of my professional contacts and we were able to help her. This experience inspired us to think of how we could effectively help women going through different scenarios like this and empower them with education.” she said. The rally of the professionals and like-hearted people paid the best dividends over the last 3 years; the distribution of education and empowerment throughout the community of Modesto has left the county wanting more. WELL started offering community classes where women learn financial literacy, along with emotional and physical wellness. The classes did so well, the organization started using their philosophy at Sierra Vista 1st Step Program. This year WELL launched their first educational curriculum for Stanislaus County. When I congratulated Alana Scott on the new curriculum, she was quick to credit the Educational Committee including Heather Raybourn , Domenica Escatel , Sarah Moore, and Carolyn

American Legion Modesto Post 74 Honor Guard and Rifle Team will do the honors. 11 am - Acacia Cemetery Ceremony with American Legion Honor Guard And Rifle Team will do Military Honors. 1 pm - Lakewood Cemetery Ceremony with Army Band and Choir singing songs, the Army Honor Guard and Rifle Team will do the Honors. General Frank Emanuel will be in attendance. Wes Page will be Master of Ceremonies. Steve Baptista, Bataan Death March survivor will be on hand. The American Legion Post 74 will be in charge of putting out crosses, grave flags and large avenue of American flags

It is always an out of this world experience at the Redwood Café and Jedi Mixmaster Chris Hull has teamed up with his favorite driod. BB8 is one of the most faithful and capable droids, but he was a bit shy, so Chris has created w citrus forward, split spirit sour, that is like BB8 is bright white and orange. When BB8 tried this great cocktail, he found it to be a bit boozy and that was his blunder. May Madness is here: graduations, recitals and
end-of-the-year festivities! It is a busy time for many families! Traditionally May First was celebrated in Germany, England and Sweden with maypole dancing. There are two forms. The first kind is the most popular. Dancers perform circle dances around a very tall, decorated pole. The second, dancers hold a colored ribbon that is attached to a smaller pole. Sometimes, elementary teachers provide this opportunity in their classrooms. The experience is magical and memorable. I am passionate about dancing. I love to dance, watch dance, take dance and teach Zumba! I love all kinds of dance: ballet, jazz, modern, folk, salsa, tap, swing, ballroom, hiphop, free style, etc. I enjoy watching So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing with the Stars. I am so excited that three Dancing with the Stars performers will be at the Gallo Center. If you enjoy watching professional dancers, join me at Gallo! We Like The Way You Roll by Brandilyn Brown and Christopher Mitchell
Looking for fresh seafood and sushi? Us too! We found the most delightful dishes at our local “izakaya” (Japanese for “stay in sake shop” or what we call a Japanese Pub), Kimoto Sake & Sushi in Modesto. Owner Brandon Dodge and his great team of chefs met with us to take us on a taste-bud journey to Japan! Chef Kenny Wei likes to make the California Roll. “It’s fast and easy to make!” His favorite to eat is the Japanese Mafia. “I love the ingredients.” He grew up appreciating how beautiful sushi can be, and challenged himself to create plates as gorgeous as they are delicious. (The flowers that complement each dish are edible, be sure to try one.) Chef Dara Ny likes to both make *and* eat the Soho Roll. “It very fresh and authentic, it is a full sushi experience in one roll.” He spent a lot of time in the kitchen growing up, learning tricks and tips from his mother. “I cooked all the time! While ciders have a huge scene in the UK, they have been slowly gaining popularity here in the States. We in the Valley now have our very own cidery, Tapped Apple Cider, in Salida, and with ciders this delicious, it’s going to greatly contribute to our cider scene. Wells Mounday and Corey Martin, who met through their kids, started this dream 3 years ago. Wells was on a Paleo diet and avoiding beer, and Corey, who simply doesn’t enjoy beer, had a cider tasting night. They tried various major brands and although they had favorites (Ace Joker or Hornsby’s) thought most were too dry or not flavorful enough and they decided to make their own. Their love of homebrew cider turned business when they were able to find a building in Salida that met all their needs, including price point, which they couldn’t find in Modesto. “We wanted it in Modesto, but everything was too expensive. The Salida community welcomed us with open arms, and have been our biggest supporters. The Chamber of Commerce has been so helpful and supportive, we couldn’t have done this without them.” said Corey. Their hard work paid off when they opened in October 2017. The cider is made from all local ingredients, and without sulfates or nitrates. They have 5 taps currently, and can promise that one of them will always pour a savory, such as cinnamon or ginger, for patrons who don’t like sweet ciders. The five current taps are Original Draft (apple), BluPom (blueberry pomegranate), Stone Fruit (peach apricot), Scorched Apple (cinnamon) and Concert in the Park (cranberry apple). While that one was super fruity, our favorite was the Concert in the Park. “It got it’s name because as we sampled it, we thought this would be perfect to drink at the concert in the park.” We concur, it’s light and refreshing! Who is responsible for choosing such cool names? “Wells is the genius behind that,” says Corey, “He named the Sleepy Hollow and the Two Lincolns.” Puzzled, I asked about the Two Lincolns. “Its cider with oak chips.” As bourbon lovers that sounds right up our alley! I got my first taste of the touring
lifestyle last summer, when I joined a songwriter friend on a train adventure through the Southwest to play a few venues I helped set up. It was she who gave me the name ‘A-Force’ when I first did booking work for her years ago. We spent much of that tour getting lost - in a sprawling musical instrument museum in Phoenix; in a massive, surreal, interactive art installation in Santa Fe; my travel partner even
got lost on the train one day, even though you can only go in two directions; and I found myself lost many times in the haunting melodies she makes. In recent weeks, tour managing has become a much more prominent part of my work as a music curator, with more escapes on the horizon with new companions. I’ve got some world-class musical friends who I’ve shared with Modesto before, and can’t wait to help share with other parts of the country. And of course, while here at home, I’m looking forward to giving many more traveling artists from across the world a creative refuge in the intimate listening-room concert series Modesto Unplugged has become known for.
May’s lineup at Moon & Sixpence is all about the world-traveling artist. Wednesday 5/2, Canadian-American duo Dan & Laurel will be with us, with broad influences ranging from folk, classical, old-time and Celtic, to gospel, jazz, vintage country, rock n’ roll, blues, and bluegrass. Opening for them is gritty Americana songwriter Samm Bones, who can be found touring all over when not busy getting lost in the wild of Alaska or the desert of Peru. 7 PM, $10. Friday 5/18, we’ll be presenting Grizzly Goat, on tour from their home base in Utah. Five multi-instrumentalists hailing from five different states come together to form this young band, making undomesticated Americana music focused on good stewardship of the earth, geography, and caring for others. 8 PM, $10. Saturday 5/19, one of New Zealand’s established songwriting stars, Mel Parsons, appears solo on our stage. I had the pleasure of interviewing one of the important metal guys in our city. Mr Brock Wiley. He lives here in Modesto and contributes to our city in many ways. Brock is the West Coast Southern Regional Chapter President of Georgia Metal Alliance Int’l Heavy Metal Club. He’s a member of E Clampus Vitus and is part of the non-profit organization, Asylum Productions Presents. He also does stagehand work and is involved with big shows, like the national act, Shinedown, that just played Modesto Centre Plaza. Asylum Productions is Sean Andersen, Founder. Brock Wiley, Modesto’s Production Manager. Brett Shurtleff, Fliers and Booking. Lon Barnes, Logos and Artwork. Asylum Productions was formed in 2014 out of Vacaville and joined up with Modesto, the summer of 2015. Asylum puts on Metal shows that feature locals, touring acts and Nationals. They put on benefits, fundraisers, tributes, and Celebration of Life for the people of Modesto. I’ve personally witnessed many a show, where a family was in need, and Asylum Productions was able to help.
MV: What are your goals, what are you trying to accomplish for the Modesto metal scene? BW: “Return it to its former glory.”

INTER There are people in our lives who really make an impact, with vision, wisdom, outlook and integrity. My friend Wes Page has been one of those voices of vision in Modesto and he has the eye of a filmmaker. It might be coincidence that Wes’ classmate at Downey High School was our own George Lucas, but these two are cut from the same cloth. George chose to leave Modesto to direct and produce. Wes Page, similar to Ron Howard’s character Steve Bolander in American Graffiti, chose to stay in Modesto. George literally has made an indelible impression on Wes Page and he in turn has made an impression on Modesto. Married to Barbara Page, Wes had a brief career in the legendary Modesto radio history in the rock and roll years of K5 AM radio and serves on the Board of the Modesto Radio Museum. Wes worked in and taught film and video production at MJC until his recent retirement. Wes was instrumental in the development of the Modesto Historic Cruise Route, and has produced great local documentaries about the State Theatre, Downey High School and has appeared in and directed plays. Like all great people, he is busier in retirement and we were lucky to catch up with him. ModestoView: What was magical about being in the Downey Class of ’62? WP: Actually I was in the Downey class of ’65 but because I was given the honor of creating videos that were shown at many of the class of ’62 reunions I was made an “honorary” member of their class. But the closeness of the classmates of “The Class of ‘62” is remarkable. They get together for a reunion every 5 years. MV: When you were growing up, what did you want to be? WP: I think I’ve always wanted to tell stories through film and video. I spent hours in front of our old black and white TV as a child. I wanted to do more than passively watch movies and programs, I wanted to make them! MV: Where did you meet your wife Barbara and what was your first date? WP: Actually I declined what would have been my first date with Barbie. A buddy (Former K5 DJ John Chappell) wanted to set me up on a blind date with her. It would have been an all day trip to San Francisco. “What if we didn’t hit it off? I would be stuck with her for the whole day,” I thought. That decision was a big mistake on my part. Fortunately I happened to meet her a few days later at a mutual friend’s house. We instantly hit if off and I asked her out. We went to a crab cioppino dinner at the California Ballroom. We had a great time dancing to a live band. We fell on the floor doing the polka, laughed a bit, got up and continued dancing as though nothing had happened. We got married that same year. That was 42 years ago. MV: When did you discover your love of filmmaking and production? WP: It all started with my Dad’s old 8mm movie camera when I was 12 years old. He let me document our road trip across the U.S. to Michigan and back. I shot very forgettable footage but it

I enrolled in Radio, Television and Film classes at Modesto Junior College and under the tutelage of greats instructors like Bill Hill, Harley Lee, and Max Sayer thrived. MV: What was it like to make the transition from actual film work to video work and what doors did it open for you? WP: When you’re as old as I am, you see many advances in the state of the art. When I was a student at MJC in the mid 60’s we shot 16mm film in our film classes and in the TV production classes we recorded video on a huge Sony 2” reel to reel video recorder. Until non-linear video editing came around, the quality of video editing suffered greatly. My first non-linear editor was an Amiga based Video Toaster. At the time it was the hottest thing around. I now use a Mac computer. MV: How does it make you feel knowing that Star Wars changed the world as much as it has? WP: It pleases me that the love for George Lucas’ creation has crossed multiple generations. But it isn’t just Star Wars and American

Graffiti that changed pop culture. George Lucas was a pioneer in enhancing sound quality in movie theatres with his THX sound system. In order to create the special effects he wanted in Star Wars he developed never before available technology to accomplish this. His innovative companies; Industrial Light and Magic, Skywalker Sound, Lucas Arts, Pixar and the George Lucas Educational Foundation have had a huge impact. MV: The two of us shared a really cool moment when we got to interview George Lucas when he was here as grand Marshall for the North Modesto Kiwanis Cruise Parade. What was it like being behind the camera at the moment? WP: It was an amazing moment that I wanted to do right, but what I was worried about was the lighting, and dealing with the sun through the window and I went into full technical mode as I wanted it to be just right, but that bright sun made it hard. MV: When did you decide to become a Storm Trooper? WP: Actually my first Star Wars costume was
Count Dooku. When I saw Christopher Lee’s portrayal of Dooku I thought: “Hey, he’s an old guy with gray hair and a beard, I’m an old guy with gray hair and a beard. Let’s give this a try.” Since then I have been Darth Vader, an Imperial Officer and of course, my favorite; a Storm Trooper. MV: Why a Storm Trooper vs one of the other characters? WP: When I put on my Storm Trooper armor and bucket (helmet) I feel that I become a Storm Trooper, especially in the eyes of a child. But when you are Dooku or an Imperial Officer, etc. and your face is visible you are just a man wearing a costume. It’s still enjoyable, but a little of the magic disappears. MV: You have a very special tattoo, would you mind sharing what it is? WP: Ha ha. When I was given the privilege of sitting at the table with George Lucas at his 40 year Downey class reunion in 2002, I was overwhelmingly star struck and wanted something more than just an autograph (If you have ever seen his autograph, it’s really just a couple of quick squiggles.) So I decided to ask him to draw a 30 second self-portrait. He looked at me curiously and then drew a quick sketch of himself complete with beard and glasses. I was so honored that he would do that for me that I later had it tattooed on my arm. Since that time I have asked other people whom I admire to draw self-portraits. I now have Weird Al Yankovic, Carol Channing, Doug Jones and the cartoonist who creates my favorite comic strip; “Pickles,” Brian Crane. But my one and only tattoo was the caricature that George Lucas drew. MV: Have any of your children chosen your line of work? WP: I have 3 children; Rhonda, Matt and Ben. My youngest son, Ben, is the only one who has chosen a career similar to mine. He is a prop builder in Hollywood. He recently finished production on the new “Ant-Man and the Wasp” movie coming out July 6th. MV: What is your favorite film of all time? WP: I guess it would be American Graffiti. But not just because it helped put Modesto on the map with it’s homage to cruising. American Graffiti introduced an innovative editing technique that is now extremely common in both movies and TV programs. Rather than telling a story from the beginning to end in a linear fashion, American Graffiti was the first to cut back and forth as several storylines progressed. MV: What is your next big project? WP: Now that I’m retired I look for projects where I can give back to the community that has been so good to me all my life. I enjoy creating video projects for the Gallo Center for the Arts, State Theatre, McHenry Mansion, McHenry Museum, Modesto Radio Museum, Stanislaus Veterans Center and other nonprofits. Biking is Fun!
We have already hit the bike trails a few times this season. Last month, many people toured the artists open studios by bike and there are group bike rides to Sunday brunches and so much more. Did you know we have 4 major trails you can bicycle? It’s true and you can access them at points across the city. One of the best things about Modesto is that it’s flat. These bike trails all pass along schools and parks so there are places to play with kids and the Virginia Corridor even has it’s own playground. There is a new park being planned for East LaLoma Park soon. Two of the longest trails head downtown and this is a great way to get there on the weekends. For you competitive cyclists, there are group rides from Fun Sport Bikes and also through Stanislaus County Bike Club. www. stancobike.org

Oakdale Chocolate Festival
No Mother’s Day or May for that matter is complete without Chocolate. Yum. Modesto Porchfest
This is literally Modesto’s biggest festival. Covering hundreds of city blocks, Modesto Porchfest features over 40 house porches and featuring over 60 bands, performing for tips and fun all over Modesto. There are porches in the College, Downtown and the LaLoma Neighborhood from 12:30 to 6 pm. Our advice is to ride your bike from porch to porch so you can enjoy a little bit here and there. I would start farthest away from your house and work back home through the afternoon, you never know what you may sample along the way. Great fun, great music and great friendship on Porchfest. What’s better than great live music? How about FREE live music. May the 4th kicks off the annual Music in the Plaza series. This is a great event that features a variety of Modesto area bands, and showcases our amazing talent. You can hear a different band each Friday evening from 7-9 pm in 10th St Plaza. This year there is a new stage that will be there all season provided by ModestoView, Sierra Pacific, Downtown Improvement District, Fuzio and Ralston’s Goat. release of Star Wars. On May the Fourth at 5 pm we celebrate our connection to this Galaxy Far Far Away with Star Wars Day in the 10th Street Plaza. Bring the entire family out and enjoy a life-size Tie Fighter, interact and take pictures with members of the 501st, Mandalorian Mercs. Rebel Legion and more. Bring your light sabers and do battle with each other and with the Saber Guild underneath a phenomenal laser and light show created by Laser Voodoo, listen to the sounds of John Williams as performed by Beyer High School Band and rock out to the Lodge Pole(Jedi) Pickers. By Middagh Goodwin Recently Modesto has been in the National spotlight and for good reason. Effie Passero aka Francesca Bavaro had been tearing it up on the newest season of American Idol. Effie did not make the final cut before America got a chance to Vote but an average of 8 million viewers watched her over several weeks as she competed for a Top Spot. 25 years ago we would have had A&R guys setting up camp in Modesto to see who was the next big thing. In today’s music market, you can’t expect record companies to be combing through the open mics and dive bars like they used to when an artist would get this kind of attention. But that doesn’t mean every local performer couldn’t leverage being from Modesto to increase their own visibility and presence on the web. You have a limited window of time for this though. Make sure you brand your posts and use #Modesto or #ModestoUSA so when someone does a search you pop up on their radar. Post a song or a video of an original song so you have something out there now. Make sure you have all your social media accounts up to date so if

someone new discovers you and likes what you are doing they have an easier time following you. The Modesto Area Music Awards are going to be here sooner than you think and creating a presence online, keeping your calendar up to date and of course having current contact info are all key things we look for. Modesto is MAD about design! by Lee Davis, Founder, Modesto Design Collective (MO.DE) From Anchorage to Wichita, large and small
cities across the country are hosting design weeks to celebrate the contribution of design and designers to creativity, entrepreneurship, innovation and overall quality of life. NYCxDESIGN, New York City’s annual celebration of design, attracts hundreds of thousands of attendees from across the globe in May to celebrate over a dozen design disciplines through exhibitions, installations, open studios, panels, trade shows, etc. San Francisco Design Week (SFDW), a weeklong regional festival in June -and the largest on the west coast -- showcases the unique intersection of ideas, design, and business. Since 2008, Modesto has been host to its own award-winning architecture festival. Co-organized by the American Institute of Architects Sierra Valley Chapter (AIASV) and the Modesto Art Museum, the Modesto Architecture Festival has attracted as many as 5,000 people annually to our city. Among the many activities in 2017 were walking tours showcasing historic buildings in the Modesto Design District and Modesto Modernist buildings; a Modesto House History Workshop to explore the history of your own house (I uncovered the 1864 document signed by Abraham Lincoln himself in which he deeded the property on which my house is located to a decorated veteran of the War of 1812!); a Family Architecture Experience and Kids Workshop at the Stanislaus County Public Library with crafts, games, and activities for children of all ages; and an Architecture and Design Film Night at the State Theatre featuring a selection of short films on architec-

ture, design, landscape, and urban design. The Festival has helped to elevate the impressive and unique architectural history of Modesto and has brought greater awareness and recognition of the important contribution of design to our city. As the Festival enters its second decade following its 10th anniversary last September, the AIASV and the Museum have joined forces with the Modesto Design Collective (MO.DE) to broaden the content of the Festival beyond architecture to celebrate the contribution of the broader design community to our city. Going forward, the newly-branded Modesto Architecture & Design Week (MADWEEK), scheduled this year for September 16-23, will include content and participation from the fields of architecture, fashion design, graphic design, interior design, landscape architecture, product/ industrial design, social design, and user experience (UI/UX) design. MADWEEK celebrates design as both an art and a science, heightens public awareness of design and the value of architects and designers in creating more livable and vibrant communities. MADWEEK will be an inspiring week of exhibits, films, installations, interventions, kid’s activities, speakers, open studio visits, tours, trainings and workshops, and other special events with a variety of community partners. My Mother has always been in support of my
music. When I was a minor she and my Dad and a crew of their friends would caravan to various bars around town so I might participate in their “Talent Contests”-it was always on a school night, it was always after 10:00 pm , I always sang a Linda Ronstadt song and I always placed. My Mother was by my side in Italy when I sang a solo offering in a choir piece for His Holiness Pope John Paul II, cantored a solemn mass at the Basilica of St. Francis of Asissi and when I won my first solo MAMA award on the night of my Mother’s Birthday, I only found it fitting that my Best Singer Songwriter MAMA award go to my Mama. It’s a wonderful thing to have a Mom it’s even more wonderful knowing she has you. The Ceres Street Faire 2018 will continue to celebrate the centennial of this fair city with a hometown parade and huge lineup of talent on Saturday, May 5 and Sunday May 6 all along the streets of downtown. Deva Café will be giving Mothers the VIP treatment on Sunday, May 13 with an “All Request Concert” of music by MAMA artists Patty Castillo Davis and Tim Allen. JAZZ If You Love Music, You’ll Love This And so it goes a friend and one of the most
enthusiastic people of the arts I have ever met has passed, RIP Mrs. Full of Grace Lieberman, actor, musician and a life force invigorating the arts scene in the Valley for years. Even in the twilight of her years she still sang and was involved in Drama in the area. She embraced all the of the arts and supported you if you were an artist amongst us. She knew the realities of the finances of the business but her unrelenting optimism made you felt anything can be done, “we will make a way to make it work.” Grace, you will be missed, and your life force lives on. One of the joys of a jam session is the unexpected, something thrown in that makes everyone take pause and remember the reason for why we play the music. Such a night happen last month when little Zoey, a guitar player all of 12 years old sat in with the Blue Monday Band. Nervous tuning up with her father’s coaxing I cued her, we will take it through one time and when we come around “play the Blues!”. Zoey plays a right handed guitar upside down , she is a leftie. She played the Blues bending notes and finding her way with Will Rock from the Rick James Band cheering her on, chorus after chorus trading with Johnny Valdes on guitar played on and at the end had a

Keeping the vibe and the excitement of Rina’s Run was one of Mike Mason’s, the race directors, primary goals along with adding a new feeling, a Ripon, Manteca & Modesto Moves Training healthy active lifestyle. “Moves Training is a non-profit training club that trains in your local community for a healthy active lifestyle by walking, running, or rolling from start to finish.” The pluses of this type of fitness club versus any other are that their certified RRCA coaches will formally train you for a 5K, 10K, Half and full Marathons to help you to not only finish your race but also to keep you injury free. Their motto is “Together we will keep each other moving” Ripon’s Run will feature a Half Marathon, Quarter Marathon & 5K. COMEDY Hello, hello, hello May is here and I’m making like a tree and
branching out. This month I will be producing comedy shows for the first time. Comics perform/”train” and try out new material at open mics. Modesto hasn’t had a comedy-only open mic in the 2+ years I have been performing. In addition, I am semi car-less making it hard to travel, so I am excited to announce that I will be hosting a new monthly open mic at Stanislaus Brewing starting May 8. The show will consist of an open mic from 7-9 where comics will work on new material and a showcase from 9-10 where comics will do their more practiced material. I am looking forward to seeing new faces and bringing friends from Sacramento and the bay to Modesto to show off my hometown. Modesto and the 209 has some really talented comics and I hope that you will support them. This month my video interview is with Dave Garret. Dave will be a part of the World of Laughs Comedy Jam headlined by Jeff Garcia on May 18 at the State Theater in Modesto. Whether on stage or his dating profile Dave is brutally honest. We talk about his dark humor, his skateboard and I’ll ask if honesty really is the best policy when it comes to a dating profile. Dave and Rocco my cameraman will help me continue working on speaking better...umm, I think.

Happy May! In the last few weeks, I have noticed
a change in the air. Everywhere I go seems to smell like flowers and fruit (and I’m not complaining). This month is jam packed with music events and new things to experience. To me, nothing says Modesto more than listening to Music in The Plaza paired with a perfect orange sunset behind the Double Tree. Luckily we have the entire season to enjoy those stellar summer nights. Starting now, there will be live music every Friday night at 7pm at the 10th Street Plaza! Now that I have a job and understand the struggles of saving money, I truly know that nothing is better than free events with all of my friends! Another great event that is coming up is the State Theatre’s “Way Back Wednesdays”, a monthly visit to classic films from the

1970’s-1990’s. On May 16th at 7pm, they are kicking off this summer long event with ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High’. Later on this summer, they will also be showing the films Fargo and Clerks! I hope everyone has a fantastic month! Don’t forget to stop and take moments to appreciate this weather, how beautiful our community is, and how this is our ONLY summer 2018. I can’t wait to experience it with all of you.

Who hasn’t heard of the Jedi,
lightsaber wielding knights from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away? Star Wars, the brainchild of Modesto’s own George Lucas, is one of the most iconic films in cinematic history. What is there not to love about Star Wars? The only thing for me might be the word “Wars”. That’s because I’ve always had a hard time with movies containing violence and destruction. But even I am deeply touched by this great saga. We get to see leadership, teamwork and cooperation, bravery,

love and wisdom at its finest. I enjoy talking about Star Wars with an old friend of mine who pointed out to me that the Jedi way very much rests on Buddhist and Taoist philosophy. Of course he’s right. And though much can be said about Lucas’ work with Star Wars itself, I’d like to remark on the Jedi’s training as defenders of peace. The concept of a group of highly, specially trained individuals safeguarding humanity within the strict guidelines of an old religion or deep seated philosophy has been a running theme of many a legend on our own planet. But exactly what kind of training do the Jedi undergo? This training would fall within three different general categories: philosophy, martial arts and utilizing “the force”. All three categories were equally important and were required to be mastered for a learner to be recognized by the Jedi Council as a Jedi Knight. In our own reality, martial arts is all about utilizing “the force”, that is the part gathered and channeled to strengthen the body in physical and internal ways or to utilize externally for combat in defense. Some martial artists would call this ‘chi’. A good martial artist will learn combat, the philosophy about the use of martial arts, and the energies that such disciplines can wield. My friend would have much more to say about the way of the Jedi. It’s a serious path, no doubt. To be a Jedi is hard work requiring lots of study and lots and lots of practice. Grace Lieberman was a cultural sparkplug. She championed all of the arts and her talent and drive got people to get together and create amazing works. From opera and musicals to stage concert performances, Grace was Modesto’s Sweetheart. Her opera performances with Buck Townshend and with Paul Tischer were legendary and her contributions to keeping the arts alive were larger than life and she gave so much back to the arts community. She was celebrated at the 2004 Modesto Area Music Awards with a lifetime award that was presented by her friend Marie Gallo. Her spirit in the arts community will live on.

The first piano will appear in 10th St Plaza on Star Wars Day, May 4th and will feature a Star Wars theme. This piano will remain in 10th St Plaza on the stage. Art Time and Sip Wine Paint Venue by Brandilyn Brown Sipping a glass of wine and simultaneously smearing paint around on a blank canvas seems to be all the rage right now, and the ViewCrew, who enjoy trying new things and staying on top of what’s new and hot, got together to do just that at the fairly new Art Time & Sip Wine Studios. We knew they allowed outside food and snacks, so we brought in some lumpia and lettuce wraps from Surla’s on 12th Street. It was perfect to pair with the wines they keep in stock (such as Dark Horse and Barefoot), and in case you are not a fan of wine, never fear: they have some good beers on tap like 805 and Stella Artois. Our teacher, Sergio Soto, made the experience even more fun! He taught us how to draw the famous Modesto Arch, with fireworks in the background. He was patient when we made “additions” to our paintings like Death Stars or Pokemon , encouraging us to explore ourselves and create our perfect downtown Modesto scene, which could include anything we wanted. We also got to meet their other teachers, Vanessa Hadady and Alex Walker. You are guaranteed to enjoy your paint night with any of the teachers on staff! This is Modesto’s first exclusive paint and sip venue, though there have been several non-studios that have hosted such events before. Susan Wagoner opened the studio in January of 2017 and quickly embraced the hoppin’ downtown culture. Susan was a bartender before she became a junior high school teacher, and now she has combined both skill sets and created a lovely atmosphere for patrons to enjoy and explore their inner artist. The studio hosts poetry nights frequently, and is open during the monthly Third Thursday Art Walk. Music in the Plaza is packed full of great local performers. We kick things on the 4th with Lodge Pole Pickers playing your favorite songs from the 60 and 70’s. May 11th join Big Earl & the Poorhouse Millionaires performing some of the best blues and Americana music anywhere. On the 18th come down and celebrate Mexican Heritage with Texas Funk as they play Tejana, Cumbia and Oldies.
