order. I want to tell all of my friends and colleagues thank you for taking my calls, answering my emails when I repeatedly ask you to donate to the causes and organizations that need our help. I truly thank you and appreciate your generosity. We walked a mile in high heel shoes for Haven Women’s Center and raised nearly $3,000. Thank you. Thanks also to all that donated to the Gallo Center for Arts Madness. Just when you thought it was over, this month I will be calling to help raise funds for the East LaLoma Park Playground and for the 100th Season of MoBand and something really big coming up. Thank you in advance for taking my calls and supporting these efforts. We are really trying to do some good things for our community that really make a difference and your help is so valuable. It is great to live in a place like Modesto where we can really get involved and make a difference. Every month seems to have a special theme, but May is really about the variety. The weather is nice, it’s not so warm yet and that means that it is really nice for everything. If you haven’t dusted off your bicycle, you need to do it as there are bike paths to ride, Sunday Funday brunches,

Modesto’s GOAT? By Chris Murphy I was chatting with Stanislaus County’s PR Ace Amy Vickery and Modesto’s Chief of Police Galen Carroll at Love Modesto and we got to talking about GOATS. What kind of goats you ask? Well, as you may know, Modesto’s original slogan, before Water, Wealth, Contentment, Heath was “Nobody’s Got Modesto’s Goat”. Cooler heads prevailed and the words that adorn our Arch today were chosen, but this brings another subject to light. What is Modesto’s official animal? Should it be the humble Goat? Moreover, what if we really embrace Modesto’s Goat in the many ways we can, including G.O.A.T., Greatest Of All Time. Who are Modesto’s greatest? Who is our

Bike to Work days, family cycling festivals and you can get your spandex on for Ride for Mom so you can enjoy a Mother’s Day Brunch. We even have Modesto’s first bicycle show too. If you miss the Amgen races in Modesto like I do, you can take in the Modesto Criterium on May 19 and get your fill of high-speed excitement downtown. Our house will be hosting 5 bands for Porchfest on May 19, so hope you ride by and enjoy, we will have lots of bike parking. But no matter what you do, get up, get going and enjoy this nice flat terrain that we call home. You will feel so much better. But what really gets me going are the things make Modesto and our area better and different. How do we improve the places, things and processes that make us great, not just good? One of our Hall of Fame events is MoBand Concerts in the Park that brings thousands together each week and the many events that happen in our parks, from Gala in Graceada to a weekend family birthday party. These things are why we are taking a look at our area parks, the places we gather, recreate, relax, play and meet our neighbors. There are some really good parks and there are some that need our help. Whether you are 5, 50 or 90, good parks are a sign of a Hall of Fame? Modesto High has their Hall Of Fame, we have the Legends of the Cruise Walk of Fame, so why not a new walk of fame, featuring Modesto’s Greatest of All Time right down the sidewalk of 10th St. Who would be in this group? What do you think? On top of that, should we embrace our inner goat and make it a city mascot? Every organization seems to have a mascot, why not Modesto? amazing summer Thursday nights with MoBand and 3,000 of your friends in the Mancini Bowl bandshell at Graceada park, with food, drink, wine, and fun sounds have made the perfect evening; a hall of fame slice of Modestocana. This 100-year season begins with a MoBand 100 Year Birthday party at the McHenry Museum on May 30. This will be a beautiful evening as the ribbon is cut on the 100 Years of MoBand history exhibit at the Museum that will be on display through the middle of July. June and July in Modesto’s Graceada Park, enjoy the sights and sounds of the 100th Year Modesto Band of Stanislaus County’s Concerts in the Park. May blooms with art events all over the area, and plenty of workshops and classes local and regional. Check the schedules at Mistlin Gallery, Tri-Chromatic Gallery, Chartreuse Muse, Dragonfly Art for Life close to home, but venture out and see what else offered in Turlock at Carnegie Art Center, the Bothwell Center for the Arts in Livermore, Lodi Art Association, Merced Multi-cultural center in downtown Merced. And something new, the Un-workshop Open studio time happens Fridays from 5 to 8 pm at Mistlin Gallery. Bring your art supplies and go free form in the studio in a social setting. Intended artists 18 and over, FREE. May 9th, drop in 6 to 11 pm at Copper Rhino 2 featuring artists from the Central Valley Artist Facebook group, an interesting group of artists including the talented Linda Knoll. Worth a look and a chance to see local art branch out of downtown. A lot of crafter and artisan events start happening in May and continue through summer. I saw quite a few arts vendors at Earth Day in Graceada Park, and sure to see more at Graffiti Summer events and DoMo Market. Nice to see a booth from Harmony Enterprises, the Tie Dye iconic Modesto art business since 1979, May 12th Carnegie Art Center artisan market Sunday May 12, noon to 4 pm, showcasing local artists, artisans and crafters. I mentioned the Shire Community Space started their 2019 fundraising push last month. Shire reports their private show a success starting their crowdfunding campaign for their next construction phase. Tri-Chromatic Gallery has a subscription push to their Patron page. Since 1977, “May the Force be With You” has been part of the global lexicon.

This phrase, created by Modesto native George Lucas symbolizes the magic and influence of his epic film Star Wars, the follow-up film to his breakthrough American Graffiti. Just say “May the 4th Be With You” out loud and you will hear the pun that so many Star Wars fans worldwide have used to proclaim their love of the saga. “May the Force be with you” to all that celebrate Modesto’s bestknown citizen George Lucas’s beloved Star Wars story is the phrase that binds us all together and is a message of hope for all, like peace or shalom. On May 3rd, 2016 an official proclamation was made by the City Council making May the Fourth Star Wars Day in Modesto. Two years ago marked the 40th Anniversary of Star Wars: A New Hope and we celebrated big in the 10th Street Plaza. A new tradition was born and this year Star Wars Day looks to be bigger and better. On Saturday, May 4th at 3 pm we descend on the 10th Street Plaza once again to celebrate all things Star Wars. We have invited all the Fan Clubs to join us the 501st, Mandalorian Mercs, Dark Empire, Astromech Builders and Rebel Legion. We have reached out to the NorCal Cosies and Central Valley Costumers to join us as well. We encourage you all to dress up as your favorite characters or just sport a Star Wars T-Shirt to show your love. Once again the Lodge Pole(Jedi) Pickers and Beyer High School Band will be performing live and Laser Voodoo will be putting on a laser light show to thrill children of all ages. Fuzio, Ralston’s Goat and Graffiti-Dogs will be doing speciality themed food and drinks. Many of the restaurants and all the vendors will be donating a portion of sells to the Valley Children’s Hospital. Seven years this month. Hundreds of distinct musical acts showcased in intimate spaces from small recital rooms to art galleries to black-box theatres. Exotic instruments and languages quite possibly never heard in a live concert setting elsewhere in town. Modesto Unplugged has evolved and refined over the years but has never outgrown the qualities that make us unique among the downtown music circuit. While many local venues rely heavily on cover/tribute acts, or the same lineup of performers month after month, our primary mission is to bring new and fresh musical flavors to the table. Along the journey I’ve enjoyed opportunities to shape the programming of my favorite regular series and festivals both here and in the Bay Area; connect talent with venues on both sides of the Atlantic; run around the country on multiple mini-tours with fantastic songbirds; and enrich myself by attending countless

events curated by friends and colleagues throughout the area. My favorite fellow local presenters are Opera Modesto, Sunday Afternoons At CBS, and Red Tie Arts. Together, the four of us represent the leading edge of what I call the Resonant Renaissance. We’ve laid the foundation, now it’s up to you to do your part. Go beyond liking the idea of these unique cultural offerings, and embrace the reality. Seek them out in the synagogue, at the Mistlin Gallery, in the McHenry Museum, in the other out-of-

the-way places where the magic happens. Greater community engagement is the key to elevating our blossoming Renaissance to a higher level. Modesto Unplugged’s big showcase this month is a Mother’s Day matinee concert which will introduce something different yet again to our programming. The String Revolution is a quartet of guitar virtuosos sharing a passion for many different musical styles, guitar techniques, and distinctive sounds. One of their players, Janet Robin, was named a “Top 50 Acoustic Guitarist” by Guitar Player Magazine in 2017 and has served as a touring guitarist with Lindsey Buckingham, Meredith Brooks, Air Supply and others. INTER VIEW DeSha McCleod By Chris Murphy Death with dignity is probably something every one of us wishes for. Death is a certainty, but it comes to us in many ways. When death is caused by cancer or some aggressive disease, not only is it terrible for the patient, it can also one of the most difficult and stressful issues for family and friends. At some point, when you are out of options, compassionate end of life can be a salvation. Community Hospice means so much to so many. There are so many educational programs that can be helpful to any family and the more you learn about Hospice, the more important it is to our community. Founded in 1979, Community Hospice celebrates 40 years of caring this year. Running Community Hospice, Inc., Community Hospice Foundation and CHI Management, Inc. is a complicated job. As the mission of Community Hospice is to deliver care, regardless of the ability to pay, outreach to the community is a constant activity and fundraising is endlessly required. The team at Community Hospice have created inventive ways to reach out to the community, from the “Before I Die” kiosks to the Over the Ledge rope repelling challenge and so many more. DeSha McLeod has been at the helm of Community Hospice and its affiliates since 2013. Arriving in Modesto from Mississippi, DeSha has a long career in Hospice management and earned her MBA and BS in Business at William Carey University. She manages a great team and has really become a strong member of the Modesto community. Let’s get to know DeSha.

I quickly declined due to the atrociously, heartbreaking experience my family endured during my Grandfather’s time on hospice. After giving every reason why I was not the person to establish a start-up hospice agency, they asked me to reconsider. DM: One of the greatest myths of hospice care is that it is only for people that have a short time left to live and are dying within the next several days or a couple of weeks. The most consistent feedback we receive from the families and/or caregivers of our patients is that they wish they had reached out to obtain hospice care and services for their loved one much earlier stating, “I don’t know why we waited so long.” Hospice services focus on enhancing quality of life for those with an advanced life-limiting illness, providing physical, emotional and spiritual support for patients and their loved ones. MV: How does it feel, know that you are helping people in some of the worst times? DM: Grateful. In what other service line or industry can you give patients and families/caregivers assistance, compassion, kindness, hope, time and comfort during their, or their loved ones, tentative, and often frightful, times of their life? As I am not a clinician, it is such a privilege to be able to provide the resources, tools and encouragement to our amazing clinicians that provide hospice and palliative care services and support to our patients and caregivers. It is a most rewarding way to spend my days. MV: Community Hospice has a robust educational program; how does this help people prepare? DM: Knowledge is power. Everyone is entitled to make their own choice about how they want to walk their end of life journey. Having a full understanding about what health care choices and types of care are available at the end of life, empowers individuals to make informed decisions about their own healthcare. MV: How can people get involved with Community Hospice? DM: Volunteers are at the heart of Community Hospice and we welcome your time and talents. We would not be able to provide the services we do each day without the dedication and support of our volunteers. There are many ways to get involved as well. Volunteering provides the opportunity to meet like-

minded people, get hands on experience, earn service credits and feel a sense of pride in your accomplishments for helping those in need. Opportunities include; hospice care support, grief support services support, fundraising/special events, marketing, retail operations and more. MV: Your team has developed some creative fundraising projects; how do these connect our community? DM: It is our hope that our variety of fundraising projects will provide the opportunity to engage people of all ages, backgrounds, talents and abilities. Our events provide our organization the opportunity to not only raise awareness and funds for Community Hospice; it also provides us the opportunity to educate our community members on the importance of the services offered and the benefits they can provide. There will come a time in each one of our lives that we will be faced with difficult decisions for ourselves or our loved ones. The knowledge of resources available can ease the journey ahead, enhancing quality of life and allowing us to focus on what matters most. MV: Community Hospice is 40 years old this year. How will you celebrate and how can people get involved? DM: We feel so humbled to be celebrating 40 years of service. We are acknowledging this great milestone by taking a look back at our heritage and sharing the stories of many of those that have helped shape us to who we are today through our 40 short stories campaign. We will also be acknowledging our anniversary at all of our events including all of our major events, i.e. Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, Foundation Gala, Golf Fore Community Hospice, Over the Edge, Fantasy of Trees trilogy, and others throughout the year. We have so much gratitude for everyone in our communities that has touched and been a part of the legacy and success of Community Hospice. This year we really want to take a moment to reflect and share our gratitude for each person that has supported our mission. MV: What one big thing do you think people should know about hospice? DM: Clinical research has repeatedly proven that hospice care and services prolong patients’ lives. It is our hope that all people gain the acceptance and understanding that hospice provides hope, compassion, time and quality of life. Hospice is not about giving up … it’s about living.

MV: If budget were no issue, what would you like to create or develop for Community Hospice? DM: It is a consistent, challenging task as we strive to meet the evolving needs of our community. There is so much loss in our communities, too many that travel their final weeks and months alone, too many that walk their grief journey alone, and too many that struggle with a serious illness without any support or resources. There are many things Community Hospice would do if budget constraints were not an issue; provide palliative care services to anyone, insurance or not; develop and establish a Community Grief Center, a special place that would meet the needs of all our residents that are traveling their grief journey; and, open additional branches to better meet the needs of our patients, families and communities. MV: What do you enjoy most about living in Modesto? DM: Modesto is my home, and I most enjoy the sense of community that exists in our city. MV: Our final question: Beatles or Stones? Modesto’s First Bike Show May 19 10 am - 3pm

You know Modesto is all about the car shows, but how about a bike show? The Central Valley Cruisers are presenting a bicycle show in 10th St Plaza. This is the 5 year Anniversary of Central Valley Cruisers and their Bike Show will run from 10 am to 3 pm and will feature a bike show with awards, raffles, and prizes and a DJ for music fun. Central Valley Cruisers started in 2014 with 19 people with the goal to be open to all, friendly and a way to get out of the house and exercise while also supporting local businesses by stopping by to eat and drink on rides. Starting Today their Facebook shows over 500 members. They support Modesto Gospel Mission and to date have fixed or repaired close to 40 bicycles and donated several more. They have also donated (6) 55 gallon drums full of coats and twin bedding over (2) years of Coats and Blankets rides. Let’s go to the Park!

Some of history’s greatest moments have happened at a park. Seurat’s famous pointillism A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, concerts in Central Park in NYC, speakers corner in Hyde Park, the show Parks and Rec, Summer of Love in Golden Gate Park, a melting cake in McArthur Park, marathons, protests, movements and so much more. Our region is host to many parks that have identities of their own. Most of us know Graceada Park, home of MoBand, Mancini Bowl, Earth Day and so much more. Did you know we have dog parks, county parks, bike parks, skate parks, Native Gardens, water parks, and State Parks all within a 30 minute drive? Some of these parks are well established and well used, but some parks are in need of an upgrade, or even just a visit. Some of our parks have had the playground equipment removed for safety, but now need some serious upgrades. But what you need to do is check out our parks, take time and use them, plan events with your friends and get to know the parks of our region.

There are so many resources available at many of our parks, and one of the ways to learn about all of the options is the City Of Modesto Activity Book. There are swimming lessons, events for kids, art lessons and so much more at many locations. Some of our parks feature splash zones that is really great free family fun. There are some places you can go to get some mountain biking, boating, hiking, windsurfing, picnicking and so much more. There is so much variety with Woodward Reservoir, Laird Park, Frank Raines Park, LaGrange Park and Modesto Reservoir, all offering a very different experience. Woodward has been home to some amazing music festivals and Modesto Reservoir offers some great boating and recreation. Caswell State Park

There is a huge 250 acre state park that is within 30 minutes from our area located along the banks of the Stanislaus River that snakes through the park with many trails, featuring full service camping, water play areas, oak riparian woodland areas with many nature outlooks and wildlife observation area. How you can help?

The best thing you can do to help is visit our parks. Having people in the park keeps the activities on the positive side. Foot traffic and population is the best way to stop bad activity. There are two park projects that really need your help right now in Modesto.

East LaLoma Park needs you! Yes friends, we need your help to build a new playground. A few years ago, all of the playground equipment was removed, with nothing left for kids to play on. East LaLoma Park is important to the community and families need a safe and fun place to play. You can help the LaLoma Neighborhood Association build a new playground, close to the pavilion that will revitalize this park. One of my favorite places in Modesto is the corner of 10th and J. This means downtown to me, it is the epicenter. 10th St just has some magic to it as the site of our legendary cruising and the cruise route, but all of the tasty places to eat, drink and enjoy being a part of this city. This is really what it’s all about, enjoying food and drink with your friends, sitting on a patio and watching the city go by. Ralston’s Goat has really become one of those places where you can hang out with friends, feel like you are in the middle of our city and enjoy friendly cocktails and amazing food. Owner Mike Shelton has worked really hard to make sure that every one feels like family at “The Goat”. A former bar owner, The Goat is his first restaurant and this month, Mike and Chef Gil Alfaro have launched an amazing new menu, that has been crafted over the last year with experimenting and feedback from diners and we couldn’t be more excited. SONGWRITING VIEW I’d like to dedicate the May Songwriter

View column to my Mother, Jeannie Ann Rombout Castillo. My Mother made sure that I ate healthy, dressed properly, was given a spiritual foundation, roots AND wings-I owned my own recordings of Hank Williams, the Supremes and the Righteous Brothers before I ever entered Kindergarten. My Mother taught me the language of Aretha, Carole King and Neil Diamond, believed heavily in live music and only complained mildly about the profane AC/DC, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Cheech and Chong and the Some Girls album. While I “trained and vocalized” at the top of my lungs to The Divine Miss M, Barbra, the Carpenters and Pat Benetar, Mom was encouraging and understanding. I get to be me because she was free in her love of music♥️ The Third Thursday Art Walk will bring a Troubadour from the North, Horatio Monroe downtown to the ModestoView stage at 11 th and J from 6 pm to 9 pm on May 16. The Vibes- that “unsettled” spectacle of musicians cooked up of members from 6 MAMA winning bands is back at it on May 22. Their monthly offering at the Barkin Dog coincides with Wine Wednesdays, is free with surprise guest artists, themes and genres, and downbeat is 7 pm. The Ceres Street Faire showcases live music on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday May 5 in downtown Ceres at two stages. I am shamelessly plugging my participation in the 2019 PorchFest. On May 19 I will be performing with Tim Allen and Steve Ashman from noon to 1:30 at 1125 College Avenue. The Patty Castillo Davis Band featuring David Rogers, Tim Allen, Joe Baretta with Steve Ashman will be at Edgebrook Drive from 2:30 to 3:30. Madre’s Day Music in the Plaza On May 10 will host Liliana Hernandez at 7 pm interpreting beautiful styles of Mexican music on a night filled with culture and style. Deva Cafe’s Saturday Live Music Matinee brings BrewBaker a dynamic duo made up of Nate Brewer and Seth D Baker covering a mix genre of music in an acoustic style on Saturday, May 25 from 10 -1 pm. Vanessa Valencia continues her take over of the 209 on May 4 at Most Wanted Wine Bar from 6:30-8:30 pm. and every Thursday evening at the Brave Bull. Happy Spring to you all. I normally do a calendar run down but there is so much going on this month that I am going to try something different and talk about why this month is such a great month for music in Modesto. Let’s start with Music in the Plaza. Every Friday starting May 3rd there are great bands playing for free in the 10th St Plaza in Downtown Modesto. Lots of folks come out and its a wonderful atmosphere. You could post up on one of the restaurant patios and have dinner and a drink or you could bring out a folding chair and be right in front of the band. So much fun. The Oakdale Chocolate Festival. The name alone is enough to entice me but for music lovers, there is so much more. Great bands all day and a celebration of the greatest threat ever invented. The next one is my favorite event of the entire year, Prochfest. If you haven’t been, you owe it to yourself to make it a priority this year. May 19th, 12-5 pm. So many locations that you will have to take some

time and look at the schedule to see where your favorite bands will be this year. I am going to be posted up all day on Magnolia, one block away from Graceada Park. My friend Randy is hosting a Blues Stage with Ava Grace, John Clifton, Shad Harris, Project 59 and Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame. I can’t tell you how much fun I had last year. I hope you take your time and look into all the great stuff going on around town for this event. When its all over there is going to be a big Wrap Party at Ralston’s Goat too. Mite just turns into a huge jam. Only one way to find out. I hope you all have a great month and I hope to see you at a show.

All you Latin music fans out there, we are doing a Cinco De May celebration at the Barkin’s Dog Grill on the 6th of May. Actually a little known holiday Seis De Mayo was created by a little known local promoter who wanted to book all the hippest Latin musicians that he could not get on Cinco De Mayo, yep that’s me. Featured in the Band this time around Gustavo Ramirez Cuban classically trained pianist and Cuban mulit-percussionist Carlos Caro. Also in the band: Latin Grammy winner Jamie Dubberly on Trombone, Kevin Marin Trumpet, John Adey on Bass, Dave Hawkes on Drums and Johnny Vales on guitar. It is a Blue Monday Party so we will be playing: Jazz, Blues, Funk and some of the most smoking Lain music you will ever hear in Modesto. Thanks all that come out for the monthly Blues & Barbecue event in April, music and food good on a casual Sunday afternoon!. This Month Sunday May 19th the Blue Monday Band with special guest Johnny Vales guitar slinger and vocalist hosts the jam. The Burnt End Barbecue is at 822 9th street. drums, Conrad Johnson Bass, Dave Dow & Eric Benson. We will be playing Blues, R & B, Funk and a little of everything else. The Gallo performing arts Modesto for May brings in: May 5th Ryan Stevenson, 6 & 7 were all in this together, 11th Pink Floyd Laser Show, 11 also MSO with Stravinsky music, and in June 4th Rain- Beatles Tribute, and 8th Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats. Another partner in crime for music in the area is John Griswold also embracing an older demographic. Lee Rocker, the bass player for the Stray Cats was the forefront of the big Rockabilly revival in the 80s and it hasn’t stopped since. Rocker will be playing the Gallo Center on June 8. Hello, hello, hello Modesto View-ers! April showers are bringing us May shows and there are a lot of them this month. A highlight is the State Theatre brings YouTube star and stand up comic JP Sears. JP Sears produces videos that parody “new age” living and healthy eating fads. I got to speak to him for a bit on my lunch break from my real job while he was, I assume, at home in Austin, TX massaging his chakras or handpicking the gluten from his bread while wearing his signature purple shirt and flowered headband. (Fun fact: he thinks he has 10 purple shirts, but he can’t be sure because he isn’t very good at math. JP was raised by an atheist father and Catholic mother, so he’s not sure where his interest in health and exercise came from, but it started at a young age and by the age of 20 he began his spiritual journey. Eventually, JP spent 14 years as a life coach before turning to comedy. Fourteen short years later he was an overnight sensation with his YouTube show “Ultra Spiritual Life”. Episodes like “How to Be Gluten Intolerant” and “Prancercising” poke fun at the extremes some people go through to show how healthy they are.

By Felicia Aleman Mostly though, JP is a down-to-earth guy who is in his words, “stands for kindness and acceptance” and is “blessed his audience has found him”. When I asked what he recommended for a healthier lifestyle he offered the following advice: laugh instead of criticize, your practices should give you energy and leave you feeling better and of course, get a Buddha statue for your living room. As spring has now sprung, foot races are now in an abundance. That’s great if you can afford to race every weekend. I learned early on in my racing career that it isn’t always so affordable to race every race, just because. Yes, some races are better than others and even more so the importance would be the charitable cause for the money the race is being produced for. Let’s face it, not everyone out there is looking to be part of a charitable race to help cats learn to be a disc jockey. This is why I not only pick and choose the closest charitable/cause/races closest to my heart, but also which ones give me more bang for my racing bucks. Friends if you’re only planning to race just one of the many great races in May I’d like to recommend The Modesto Memorial Classic. This RUN features a 1-mile or 5-K race on a certified

flat paved shady course along the Tuolumne River. Run or walk it, the choice is yours. It also has one of the best FREE kids fun runs. All kid fun run finishers will receive a medal. WOW! If that wasn’t enough all who registered for the race will be treated to a pancake breakfast as part of the registration fee of paid runners and walkers. Prize money is available to the top 3 men/women finishers and 1st master’s (over 40) finishers in the 5k. This Event is my personal pick race for the month of May since it benefits the Modesto Vet’s Center which helps returning combat veterans and their families. They say April showers bring Mayflowers and Modesto has proven this to be very true. This whole area is blossoming with all kinds of beautiful wildflowers. We are beyond lucky for all the amazing wildlife native to the central valley. Our beautiful state flower, the California poppy can be seen all over. Did you know that May 13-18 is Poppy Week? The best places to check out wildflowers this time of year are Knights Ferry Recreation Area, Red Hills Road Trail, and Pacheco State Park. There are also many other places around Modesto that you can find amazing flowers such as the farmers market on Thursday’s and Saturday’s on 16th Street or you can even start your own garden!

Students can also look into their school’s floral design programs as some of the high schools in Modesto do offer this as well. Lets not also forget the amazing ROP classes that are offered. For those unfamiliar, students going into their junior or senior year can ballot for certain classes on other high school campuses. These classes, such as Davis’s firefighter ROP program or Downey’s medical program, allows one to explore different professions they may be interested in. Anyway, I truly hope everyone had and amazing spring break and summer is just around the corner. Happy May!

important than finding a meaningful life? The content of the meaning may change but it

is a question humans never stop asking themselves. Does our life have meaning? There are different ways we may find meaning in our life. We may discover it by finding or creating an occupation that is worthwhile, or by doing something for one’s community/society. We find meaning by experiencing something or meeting someone. Meaning may also come to us by changing our attitude toward suffering that is out of our control. Life can be very hard when we encounter illness or a hopeless situation. It is then that we are propelled to ask what it is that truly matters. What is the meaning of life? Nietzsche, the famous philosopher said this about it : “He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.” We have the capacity to turn things around when we search for something that gets us connected to the infinite, that takes us beyond concerns that ultimately aren’t that important. Being connected to the infinite we may feel a sense of awe, surprise, joy, sorrow and gratitude. Meditation, prayer, being in nature, music, art, literature, poetry and dance can connect us to the infinite. Or when we feel love for family and friends. Other personal choices, activities, relationships, hobbies and even simple pleasures can give meaning to life. Having a positive attitude I think helps to endure suffering, hardship and disappointment,

DESIGN VIEW From Bauhaus to Modesto’s Courthouse

For many Modestans, Bauhaus is an awesome tapas haus off of Downey and Kimble Aves serving delicious cured and smoked meats, pickled seasonal vegetables, and a wide selection of international and local craft beers. And so it is. But Bauhaus is also one of (if not the) most influential and revolutionary global movements of art, architecture and design. Founded in Dessau, Germany, in April 1919 by acclaimed architect Walter Gropius, the Bauhaus was a school whose functional, rational, modernist approach influenced the education, practice and theory of architecture, graphic arts, product design, textiles, and many other forms of art and design worldwide, including here in Modesto. In 2019, a global movement is underway to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus and its myriad of contributions to society. And we’ve selected Bauhaus as the theme of the Modesto Architecture and Design Week (MADWEEK), September 21-28, 2019. The global influence of Bauhaus can be directly traced to and seen in downtown Modesto today. Our iconic Stanislaus County Hall of Records is the first ever “International Style” county building in California. In 2017, the Modesto Art Museum commissioned and published the report “The Stanislaus County Hall of Records: Modesto’s Monument in Modern Architecture,” documenting the historical significance of this architectural gem to Modesto and to California. The structure was built in 1939 with New Deal funds and designed by Modesto architect Russell Guerne DeLappe. be easily fooled. Just around the corner from and connected to the Hall of Records is the current Stanislaus County Courthouse, Modesto’s most direct line descendant of the Bauhaus. Completed in 1960, the Courthouse was designed by architect Mitchell Van Bourg, who was himself a graduate student of Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius at Harvard in the 1940s. Among other elements, Van Bourg’s use of long strips of windows in the Courthouse design are characteristic of the International or Bauhaus style developed by Gropius. In 2018, the Museum Art Museum commissioned a modernist poster of DeLappe’s Hall of Records by local designer Jordi Camps, Jr. and unveiled during MADWEEK to raise awareness of this priceless architectural, cultural, communal, and economic asset. The Museum has commissioned a second poster this year by local designer Eric Le celebrating the Van Bourg Courthouse to be unveiled during MADWEEK 2019. As plans for the new courthouse in downtown Modesto moves forward, the fates of the Hall of Records and current Courthouse are unknown. It is crucial that we understand and appreciate the architectural, cultural, economic and historical value of these Bauhaus-inspired buildings now more than ever. Go Modesto: Music in the Plaza

Music in the Plaza returns to the 10th Street Plaza in Downtown Modesto on May 3rd in conjunction with DOMO First Friday with some Indie Rock from French Cassettes(2010 MAMA Winner) and Tino Drima. May 10th we celebrate Madre’s Day with Lilana Hernandez with festivities starting at 5 pm and music 7-9 pm. Enjoy some hot blues music with area favorites Gary Gervase & Kickstart Blues Band on the 17th. May 24th do not miss Joe Barretta, Patty Castillo Davis and Tim Allen three of Modesto best bringing the hits from the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s and beyond. Closing out our first month back is Remedy, it has been a while since this female fronted powerhouse has performed downtown so you will not want to miss it.
