GREET

people from all over getting their Star Wars on and the whole comic world that surrounds it. Star Wars, cycling, George Lucas are just a few of the things that give Modesto a great story and history. Past, present and future generations are excited by this, and if our economic development team in Modesto is serious about growing our economy and attracting people and business, these are great things to celebrate. Let’s do this right. Let’s support our local businesses. Let’s make sure our artists and musicians are welcomed back to the stages. Let’s open safely and not go too crazy so we don’t relapse. We really do have one chance to get this right. Our local businesses really need us to work together to do this. I really hope to start seeing you out and about, chatting, laughing, singing, playing, rocking and enjoying. Get your shot, gather safely and soon we will all be in the goove and the resistance will win and defeat the evil empire of COVID. May the 4th be with you,

Greetings friends

It seems to be a different world in the last 30 days. Everywhere, you can hear the sounds of our society unlocking from our long winter of pandemic. We have gone from tik-toking our daily rituals to getting back to the outside world and connecting with people again. Thank goodness we have smart people that are getting vaccinated so that we can begin to have a new “normal” civilization that looks out for each other, not just for themselves It is really that simple and that safe. You have a better chance of being hurt in a car crash, 12 in 100,000 than an adverse reaction to the vaccine 1 in 1,600,000. These are odds I can live with. I did it, my whole family did it and I hope you will do. If you do, we can hang out. Such a deal! Now that we are vaccinated we are traveling again, seeing the world and we even checked out the Aurora Borealis in Alaska last month. It is weird starting out this May as a 60year old. I don’t feel any different, but I do look at things different and for some reason, everything is more vivid. I am paying more attention to my surroundings, my health and the people in my life especially my grandson. My mission is to surround myself with positive people that make a positive difference. We need to connect with people that want

to make things happen, send positive messages and create ways to make our neighborhoods and our city better and most of all, get things done. Better yet, with vaccinated people that want to get together and make a positive difference. May for Modesto has become so much more important to me and Modesto. For one, is it bike month, and I grew up riding my bike around Modesto and then racing all around the region and even brought racing back to downtown in 1983, the Tour de Graceada. And now, May is the home for all things Star Wars. This amazing film by Modesto native George Lucas changed everything and it is so good to see events and activities, Stormtroopers, City Proclamations and

What do these things have in common? 1. Top of the parking garage in downtown Modesto. 2. The top of the Briggsmore overpass. 3.Top of the Memorial Hospital parking garage. Answer, these are the highest points in Modesto where you can ride a bike. Modesto with an average elevation of 89’ above sea level means that these spaces may be all of 150’ high. Why is this significant? It means that Modesto is flat and that makes it really easy to ride a bike virtually anywhere in town with out breaking a real sweat. How truly easy is it to ride a bike in Modesto? In the words of Sgt. Pepper, “It’s getting better all the time”. There are more bike paths, cycling lanes are more visible and function and we have a trail system that is really useful. The Hetch Hetchy, the Virginia Cooridor, the Mensinger trail and the developing Tuolumne River trail are become quite popular. My house backs up to the Dry Creek Mensinger trail and I can tell you for sure that this is extremely popular and it is so fun to watch the athletes, the casual cyclists, the families with kids on training wheels all out enjoying our trails. Hopefully, soon, there will be a good connection from the Virginia Corridor to the Mensinger, but progress is being made so get out and enjoy. For Sunday Brunches, try your bike. There is ample bike parking in downtown Modesto. Most residents only live less than 3 mile from down and it is an easy trip. Plus you will feel better after a nice Sunday Funday when you ride your bike home. You can get in on the action by checking out the group rides at our local bicycle shops like Fun Sport Bikes and with the Stanislaus Bicycle Club. If you are more into the competitive mountain biking, check out the Modesto Composite High School team lead by local outdoor advocate and firefighter Darin Jesberg. There

May Day By Jim Christiansen

May Day brings more flowers and good news than alarm bells this year, as venues and events starting to bloom and open. Summer class registration and schedules going at Chartreuse Muse, Dragonfly Art for Life, Queen Bean, Mistlin Gallery and the Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock. Kaila Kindley is hosting classes and demonstration sessions at MoCon Theater and Gallery on Tenth and E Streets In painting, music and theater. Peer Recovery Art Project gallery hosting open hours during the week, and some music offerings to go with the Art. I had a chance to drop in and chat with John Black and take some photos of their new location as open Tuesday when many of the other locations closed. Mistlin Gallery is currently open Thursdays through Saturday. Chartreuse Muse still on their Saturday afternoon open schedule. One of the Topics I had with JB is when does Art Walk re-open. I had a similar question from Vicki Reid at Mistlin Gallery and other artists. I don’t have an actual answer to that, but from the interested attendance at Art Skulk 2 last month, and the art hanging possibilities in the new restaurant parklet locations, this popular activity could make a comeback. Another frequent question directed to me this month. When is Stanislaus Artists Open Studio 2021 going to happen? This should be resolved by the end of this month, on whether the proposed dates for mid-October viable to the participating artists. I am optimistic and went back to reorganizing and finishing my studio space on the alley near Graceada Park to do just that. I may open for some Open Studio weekends by invitation as early as this month, and moreover the summer. Other artists may do the same and I hope

The stage lights are beginning to light up again. A new season has been announced for the Gallo Center and they have reported some quick sell-outs. There is a new excitement on our local stages and venues as there are signs that we will change tiers for greater openings. During May, we will still be enjoying some theatrical stream casts, some will be taking to the streets and tickets will be selling for live events. It will be exciting. The Prospect Theatre project will be presenting a home-town hero reimagination of the relationship between legendary climber Royal Robbins and Warren Harding. A staged reading of Ken White’s one act play Early Morning Light is being produced by the Prospect Theater Project. The focus of the story is the controversy between Royal Robbins and Warren Harding over bolting on El Capitan’s Dawn Wall. The two men were very different. They were not friends, but they respected and admired the other. Theirs was a friendly rivalry. Robbins and Harding had two very contrasting styles. In the way they approached life and approached the wall. In a staged reading, the actors read from

the script. The sets, costumes, and props are minimal. Jack Souza is directing the production. Joseph Hypes plays Royal Robbins, Matt Capron plays Warren Harding, and Jack Souza plays Doc Guitar. Mardi Brewer is the stage manager. Mark Oesau will videotape and edit the production. The final performance will be made available for streaming in May. Liz, Damon, and Tamara Robbins and Denise Crosby provided constructive and insightful notes, as well as assisting with the production. Down the road, we hope to collaborate with the State Theatre on a virtual seminar and talkback. Live is back! Foreverland, Michael Jackson tribute is coming to the outdoor venue Lucca Winery on June 12. Tickets will go on sale for this and others on sale on or about May 15th so don’t snooze, as things will sell out quickly as we come back to life. Coming soon: East Bay Soul - June 17, Fleetwood Mask - August 15, Journey Revisited - September 18 For more info: www.red-tie.org/home Look for exciting new events from Central West Ballet, Opera Modesto, and the Gallo Rep and our school drama programs as the local campuses open up. Exciting times. Check this space over the next few months as the stages and the places come back to life and the performers return to the stages. www.modestoview. com for our amazing event calendar.

COVID has changed so much in our community when it comes to dining. The entertainment and the restaurant experience were some of the things that were completely upended. These are amazing places of social interaction, that for so many months have been impossible. Here in Modesto, there are many places that look a lot different today than they did a year ago. We have a new downtown filled with parklets for outside dining and expanded patio spaces and you are able to order a ToGo cocktail. These are some of the things that need to stay with us in the future. One of the places that has changed the most is Torii Japanese Restaurant in East Modesto. This has been a long time Modesto favorite for both food and a vibrant karaoke and cocktail experience. Here we are in 2021 and the place looks fresh and amazing. A complete new layout features Teppanyaki tables adjacent to the sushi bar and the main bar. Coowner Danny Zeng is very proud of the new restaurant. “We really had to rebuild most everything and it gave us a chance

10

for a new design, and create a place that will be fun and showcase our cooking tables”. It truly is a fresh design and we immediately felt welcome and comfortable. This is a very different place from the other locations he owns, Fumi Sushi and Kimoto along with Brandon Dodge and Kern Lew. One of the best things is that one of Modesto’s great bartenders Sheri Midori Perry is there. I immediately ordered some of my favorite drinks that she has perfected over the years at Minnie’s and the Tiki, like the Mai Tai and the Planter’s Punch. The bar is loaded with great options and is conveniently placed between the sushi bar and the karaoke stage. Yes friends, karaoke is still here and rocks the place on Thursday Friday and Saturdays. Once seated, we were greeted by our chef, Joseph Music. (yes, that’s his real name) As he displayed his cooking tools, flipping the spatula around and tapping out a beat on the griddle, we ordered our sushi appetizer and a round of Gyoza (Potstickers) both pan seared and deep fried. After we landed on a steak, chicken

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

and shrimp selection, the show started and the eggs started cracking, the volcano of onions caught flame and the fried rice was served. Great drinks were part of our fun as the entrees were grilled to perfection. They even have an American Graffiti roll. I loved that. Great service, great tastes, great fun and we had a wonderful experience. If you are not interested in the table preparation, there are traditional entrees available and the sushi counter is on point. The Ahi, Hamachi, Unagi and Sake were so very fresh and prepared perfectly. Danny’s eyes were on our experience and he was making sure all of the diners were being attended to. As we ate, the restaurant started to fill up and please note that you should make reservations as the weekends are operating at the distanced capacity. Don’t miss out. Torii wins the award for the biggest change

during COVID and it will be a place that we visit regularly, if not for the full dining experience, but for the cocktails and the karaoke. Let’s have some fun and support our local restaurants.

Contentment Brewing is all about the custom flavors. It is about the small craft brew batches that allow founder/owner and brewer Alejandro Serrato to create an amazing experience, and connect with the people in his neighborhood. The College neighborhood has been loyal to Contentment over the last year. As Alejandro and his wife Abena scaled back during the pandemic to save costs, the people in the neighborhood kept coming back for more great flavors and to support a local brewery that is truly committed to being a part of our community. There were even times during the last year, he even ran low on beer thanks to his loyal customers. He received little or no financial assistance during COVID and was outside of the downtown programs and he is truly grateful to those that continued to visit. There are over 15 beers on tap, all brewed in the Contentment facility near MJC on the Campus Way loop. In the shadow of the famous grain elevators, this neighborhood is a cool part of town with great opportunities. Alejandro is looking forward to the return of students to MJC and for our community to open. During the pandemic, Contentment has had a great outdoor patio and a location for a food truck, more recently adding a stage for local bands to perform. As we move toward opening, there will be more plans for more bands and events to happen. We spent the afternoon making a circuit all the way down the line and really had a change to discover and enjoy the flavors from the Black Magic Stout to a ESB Extra Special Bitter to a Blood Orange or Apricot ale to a nice rich IPA and Hefeweizen. One of the best ways to experience Contentment is to create a custom flight, that is served on its own mini picnic table, hand crafted by Alejandro’s father. Around the room are the books that Alejandro studied as he learned his craft. As a fellow alumni of Stanislaus State, he felt that the school really prepared him well for this business venture. Last year, we both served on a Homecoming panel to encourage young students to follow their dreams and be a part and serve the communities where they live. Alejandro follows this model to this day, supporting local organizations and in turn the community has supported him. One of the most interesting details of his client base is how diverse the age groups are and how many regulars he has. It truly validates the attention to detail to making great beer. Oh by the way, they make their own Cream Ale and Root Beer. Bottles and recyclable Growlers are available for all of the flavors are available. Alejandro expects to be able to reopen the inside portion of the brewery in the near future. The patio is spacious, comfortable and is waiting for you. See you there.

W E I V R E T IN Chad Hilligus By Chris Murphy

A new day on stage at the Gallo Center is opening. Over the last decade, the Gallo Center has been guided by Lynn Dickerson and her team, smartly making the Gallo Center profitable and a vital part of our regional culture. I have a special fondness for the Gallo as I have been on the board or committee since the center was a blueprint back in 2001. Since Lynn announced her retirement, a huge search began to find a new CEO that would take the center into a solid and exciting future. The Gallo Center is proud to announce Chad Hilligus as the new CEO starting in June. Chad is a veteran performer, having toured with the Ten Tenors and many stage roles, and managed high profile performing arts centers in Palm Springs and Santa Fe New Mexico. We warmly welcome Chad and his husband to Modesto and hope you get to meet him soon. Let’s meet Chad. ModestoView: What was it that excited you about the Gallo Center opportunity? Chad Hilligus: The Gallo Center is one of the premier performing arts centers on the west coast, largely due to Lynn Dickerson’s extraordinary leadership. The opportunity to be part of a team and an organization that is consistently setting and raising the bar for our industry is incredibly exciting. But more importantly, I’m at a place in my career where the community I’m serving is just as important as the job itself. I’m looking forward to diving in and making Modesto home as quickly as possible.

MV: How do you balance the needs of diverse and eclectic programming vs the need for predictable box office success? CH: Believe it or not, you can do both. My primary job is to listen to the audience and read the market. That takes time. What qualifies as a “predictable box office success” in one market, may not necessarily do well in another. This first season for me will be about two things: reopening and listening. It will be interesting to see how the audiences have evolved post-pandemic. MV: How important to a community is live music and the performing arts? CH: Carol Channing used to always say “Art is fertilizer for the brain.” I would go a step further and say that the arts are essential to the human experience. I think this became even more true during the pandemic. To quote the great Joni Mitchell, “Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you got ‘til it’s gone.” Nothing can replace the visceral experience of collectively participating in a live performance and the Gallo Center is such an important part of that story. MV: Where and when was your most memorable performance in your career so far? CH: As a performer, it was opening the UEFA Euro 2012 in Warsaw, Poland with The Ten Tenors for a crowd of 50,000 people alongside Brian Wilson and Taio Cruz. Never has an opera singer felt more like a rock star. As a producer/pre-

senter, while there have been many, getting to produce and direct Carol Channing’s 95th Birthday Celebration at the McCallum Theatre in 2016 will forever be one of my crowning moments. As a spectator, I would say the first time I saw Chris Botti. Yes, he’s an incredible performer, but more importantly, he taught me how to be a gentleman on stage and how to share the spotlight. MV: Any message you would like send to Modesto? CH: Be patient with us. This is going to be a season filled with challenges as we do our very best to reopen the Center safely. As Lynn and her phenomenal team have done throughout the pandemic, we will continue to follow CDC, state, and city guidance to welcome you back as soon as we can, but there may be some bumps along the way. Let’s remember that we’re still all in this together. MV: Beatles or Stones? CH: Beatles. I can tell we are going to get along great - Chris Murphy

The Roots of Star Wars, American Graffiti, the influence ofComic and On May 14, 1944, George Lucas was born in Modesto, USA. On May 25, 1977, Star Wars took over the big screen and immediately changed film forever.

Books!

The Star Wars Adventures of Luke Starkiller Yes friends, this was the original working title from Draft 3 of “The Star Wars” in 1975. Star Wars was a work and an idea of George Lucas’ for quite sometime. An idea that began with Lucas’ imagination, making home made roller coasters in his back yard on Ramona Avenue, publishing a neighborhood newsletter, buying records at Harley’s on J Street, buying comic books at Readmore Books on 11th Street, just down the block from his fathers stationary store, reading and watching Flash Gordon and building sets at Downey High School and racing fast foreign cars in parking lots and tracks throughout the central valley. The inspiration of the Disney swashbuckling sword play, the car racing and the childhood dream to tell a great story has made George Lucas one of the film making greats of all time, creativity born in Modesto USA. We are truly the Home of Star Wars. I was one of those kids standing in line at the Briggsmore in 1977, waiting for a movie that had heard about for a long time. My friend Terry Allen’s family had Bonanza Books and Comics, then located at the corner of College and Bowen. After school we would sort used books, unwrap the new comic books, and have a ringside seat to the comic imagination that inspired Lucas, who at that time was making Star Wars in Tunisia. Terry knew George’s parents and we would go to their home in Del Rio and see photos from the production of Star Wars. Terry, Dave Ackerman and I waited at the front of the line as science fiction fans, excited kids, and artists that loved the creativity. As the theatre darkened, we cheered as “A long time ago, in a galaxy far away” appeared and the opening theme blasted and the intro story rolled across the screen. We cheered Luke, Leia and Han and hissed Darth Vader. The rest is history and George Lucas became a global household name. To learn more about George Lucas’ early years, check out the kiosks on 11th St between I and J Streets. www.modestocruiseroute.com

Comic Escape

Comic books have inspired so many, all over the world, taking kids to places you can only imagine and creating a world of escape and excitement. Today there are multi-billion dollar franchises based on the DC and Marvel Comics, ComicCons, Cos Play, new characters created daily and so many more are bought to life by creative artists. Some of the most iconic illustrations have been drawn and created by local talented creatives. Here are a few of them that have really broken through and are stars in the comic world. Our first one here is the talented Allen Passelaqua. Way back in 2008, he created a comic illustration of me I still treasure and created our first comic cover on our March 2008 issue.

Allen Passelaqua

ModestoView: What did comic books mean to you when you were growing up? Allen: Comics were my gateway to reading books when I was really young. I started with compilations of Peanuts, Garfield and others I checked out from the Hart-Ransom school and Modesto downtown library. The simple art and what I thought was hilarious humor got me hooked. When I finally found real comic books later that art blew my mind and the stories were above me. But I wanted to understand and it got me interested in things like science and history. MV: When did you know you wanted to be an illustrator? AP: I always loved to draw. The art in comics was amazing and a lot more interesting to me then drawing cows or trucks. The idea of telling a story with art really appealed to me as well. Dynamic caped figures and dark cityscapes were so far removed from my fields and orchards. It was an escape I could not only imagine, but create for myself. After spending all day on a tractor and creating entire worlds in my mind I would draw them when I was finally done working. MV: How do you think Star Wars changed comics, art and science fiction culture? AP: Star Wars was a huge influence to my young mind. I remember renting A New Hope on VHS and re-watching the trench scene on the Death Star until the tape almost wore out. Looking back, I understand what a paradigm shift it was in Sci-fi up to that point, but I got in at the ground level and expected all my sci-fi to be as good. I was pretty disappointed until I found books from Heinlien, Herbert, Tolkien, and others. MV: What is your favorite character to illustrate? AP: I’m all over the place now. Recently I have drawn a lot of Mandalorians, but I really like a lot of anime like Sword Art Online, Bofuri, and Demon Slayer, to name a few. MV: Anything else you want to share Star Wars related, or otherwise? AP: I still love Star Wars and will watch anything that comes out related to it. Star Wars isn’t perfect and it doesn’t have to be. It’s an escape and when it’s about people coming together to overcome incredible odds and stop injustice, and make the universe a better place, it’s at it’s best.

Ethan Beavers By Middagh Goodwin Ethan is a Comic Book Artist who calls Modesto home. He has created art for DC, Darkhorse, Cartoon Network to name a few. His portfolio includes Batman, Wonder Woman, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Star Trek, Samurai Jack, Indiana Jones and of course Star Wars. Just announced Ethen Beavers will be pencilling and inking the new Justice League Infinity comic books. Justice League Infinity #1 will become available on participating digital platforms on May 13, and then a 20-page print version will hit stores on July 7. Pick up a copy at Invincible or Modesto Comics. Beavers has previously worked on the animated series Justice League Unlimited . MV-Have to ask. Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Being from Modesto, did you ever think you would be a part of the Star Wars Universe? What does it feel like to be a part of the Lucas Lexicon? EB- I never set my sights as high as Indy and Star Wars- not in my wildest dreams. I’ve surpassed my career expectations so many times I’ve lost count, which is great for me creatively because I am such a big fan of those films. MV-What have been some of your favorite projects to work on? EB-Obviously, my first job at DC Comics. Another was when I worked on an episode of Justice League Unlimited at WB. I couldn’t believe I actually got hired to work on the Samurai Jack Comics. Illustrating the NY Times Bestseller NERDS as pretty great. Artistically I took a quantum leap forward when I finished my first Little Golden Book. That was Batman, and I’ve done most of my best work on the dozen or so I’ve done thus far. MV-Where can someone find your work and or be able to commission a piece if they are interested?

Turlock Toon Squad By Middagh Goodwin The Turlock Toon Skwad (the team behind the art for all the posters used for Graffiti-Con and the NorCal Cosies), Harold George, Adam Harris and Omar Salinas have created several Star Wars sketch cards for Topps. Artists are given a set amount of cards (Usually 50 or less, depending on what you choose), and payment is between $4-$8 per card. These “One-Off ” cards are then reviewed and approved (or rejected). You only get paid for the ones that have been approved. Harold said his biggest pet peeve is that they want realistic drawings, and that keeps you from expressing your style on the cards (to a point). Adam Harris said “ It’s a lot of fun researching the characters and being a part of something bigger. Plus, there’s the added resume cred as these get approvals from LucasFilm.” Omar Salinas added “As a lifelong Star Wars fan it’s an awesome feeling being a licensed Lucasfilm artist.” Once the cards are approved, they go into a Topps set that they place in stores. Each card is randomly placed in a pack that has pictures from the movie they are promoting. If the movie is not out, it is hard to find a reference to use to draw. Adam Harris is the sketch card master and has drawn several sketch cards for various franchises including the Avengers and others.

May the 4th Day

May the 4th be with you...

In 2016 Modesto USA became one of the first cities to have an official designated May the 4th. The Mayor of Modesto and the City Council presented the official proclamation to the May the 4th Committee and the annual celebrations would continue with a special commendation. This day will live on in Modesto history as May the Force Be With you is known around the world as a form of greeting, parting and a wish for peace and balance in the universe. Modestans can all walk proud and know that in every galaxy, the Force is with us, especially on May the 4th. The celebration in 10th St Plaza will return in 2022 and we hope that you will join us. New Galaxy of Characters Coming? The comic and film world of George Lucas could soon come to life on a big wall in downtown Modesto. David Boring, founder of Never Boring Designs began as an illustrator and some of the people that have worked for his firm have gone on to do amazing things. Ethan Beavers, profiled here in this issue was one of those artists. He has created an outsized design using characters he has illustrated and created. This would be an amazing tribute to Modesto’s comic culture as well as a nod to one of the world’s greatest filmmakers and Modesto native sons. It would truly be something worthy of a galaxy far, far away. If you would like to help make this design a reality, contact me at chrism@modestoview.com

Some Like It Haute By Aaron Rowan

I’ve always been a serious foodie, but I enjoy Burger King far more than any respectable foodie ought. Whenever I dine inside, I find their TV almost always tuned to the Food Network channel. I’ll sit and scarf my processed patty while watching their series ‘Chopped,’ the competition show where contestants create innovative dishes from an array of mystery ingredients. The irony is almost worthy of O.Henry. Modesto Unplugged is like a French Laundry in a fast-food world. Our concert series is for those looking for something fresh and unique, not merely the same crop of cover bands that are a heavy staple of the downtown music circuit. There are three basic categories of programming we offer: original songwriters in an assortment of genres; traditional ethnic folk songs from across the globe; and opera/musical theatre/pop variety shows featuring young vocalists. With my former listening-concert venue Moon & Sixpence now out of the picture, I’ll be returning to other intimate spaces I’ve hosted over the years as live music becomes more regular again. Of all the venue owners I’ve worked with, Barbara Alvarado at the Dragonfly Art For Life is easily my favorite. She’s been the most enthusiastic about both accenting her paint nights with music, and

about the artists themselves, more than one of whose albums have spent months in her CD player. Try one of her paint-pour sessions sometimes and go home with your own work of abstract art. Three shows are on the slate this month at the Dragonfly (1210 J St.) Music will fill the room on Friday evenings at 7:30, $5 admission with extra fees for those who’d like to paint while they listen. May 7, we’ll have my Young Artist series starring Zoey Rae and friends, delivering a Postmodern Jukebox-esque program. Expect some sweet harp tunes, love songs and other treats. On May 14, it’s her near-namesake Zoe Rose, visiting from Stockton. This Zoe is folksy and bluesy and downright gritty at times. You’ll dig her one-woman-band approach. Then on 5/21, I get to introduce someone new to my series and to the downtown scene at large. Beck & The Band are fronted by young songwriter Rebecca Hernandez. Expect a set of light acoustic pop/rock & folk with a spiritual edge. Studies show that concert attendance will add years to your life, so come around and enjoy some of these colorful evenings of music. Intimate performances. Infinite playlist. Spring into Graffiti Season We have the building, now help us build it! The Graffiti USA Museum will be a place that will make us all feel better about where we live. We wil have a fun place to take guests and people from around the world will visit and learn our story! We need your donations, your ideas, and even your labor to bring this to life.

Want do know how you can help?

Donations

We need your donations, you can do it monthly, annually and we have some great donation gifts that will make you feel like the coolest cat in town. We are also talking big donations, like building naming donations.

Naming Opportunities

If you want to recognize one of your family with a wing, or an exhibit room, we can do that.

Build 10th Street

Inside our museum, we will be creating a newly imagined “10th Street”. You can create or sponsor one of the businesses along the street. For example, my family is putting in a record store, Murphy’s Records, it will be a real record store. We are working with the Modesto Radio Museum to put a radio station inside the museum that will be their museum. There will be a Sanders Appliance Store. You can be a part of this and we want your help to create the magic that will attract people from all over the world.

Help us build it.

If you are a contactor, builder, pipe fitter, welder, carpenter, we need your services. The more things like sprinkler systems, HVAC systems, restrooms and Kitchen construction donated or at least at a reduced cost, the faster we can build this museum for all to enjoy. Thank you so much to the Valley Builders Exchange, many members have been working to build the museum and to date have contributed over $300,000 in in kind services. Are you next? We really hope that you see our vision and want to be a part of it. Please contact us a info@graffitiusamuseum.com to connect or you can donate at www.graffitiusamuseum.com We are on the corner of Coldwell and Historic 99, aka North 9th St. Let’s do this Modesto and bring the Graffiti USA Museum to life.

SONG WRITER VIEW

Some say that Songwriters are a bit like historians, “concerned with the continuous, methodical narrative and research of past events as relating to the human race.” I say we are seeking to catch something universal by crafting melodies and threading prose-developing and advancing the art of the song. Music is inherently creative and is constantly collaborative. Because of COVID-19, the necessary spontaneity of in-person sessions vanished. Add coping with all the stresses that come with the unknown, the pandemic has certainly been fodder for inspiration. Here’s what the composers have to say. Candace Lamb-“ I didn’t pressure myself to do any work. For me, I write best when I feel a strong inspiration, and I didn’t feel strongly inspired to write any new material during the stay at home order. I never want my music to feel like it’s work so that it doesn’t take away the joy that it brings to my life. I performed a few online live streaming events, which was a learning process in a few different ways. In some ways it was trial and error in setting up sound with my audio interface, getting the sound levels right and getting the techie stuff to connect properly with my PC. I found it challenging with not being able to gauge my audience to really feel the vibes of the people watching.” Chris Doud-“ Even though we weren’t performing live I was able to focus on other projects. The first thing we did was a John Prine tribute video. I also spent many weekends doing live stream solo shows from my basement to pass the time. But by far the most productive thing I did was put out a double album. Originally it was just going to be a country album with my band the Salvage Company (Ryan Coscia and Jacob Canada) but with all the extra time I was able to work on a bunch of other material and develop and record those songs as well. When it was all said and done it was two separate albums Worth of material that I tried to put out as one thing. We’re planning to officially release it in June,

20

Keeping Their Composer By Patty Castillo Davis

record release party sometime around then, and then some promotional shows for the album ongoing.” Tyler Bates of Us4love-” The pandemic has turned our music schedule completely upside down. with everything being shut down for a significant amount of time, we had to get (alternative) jobs as music was our full-time job before Covid. It’s made us appreciate it when we get together and play on the weekends. We have been writing and producing our own music and we are currently working on many new projects some of which include our newly released song, “For You I Will” and a new summer pop tune called “Never Coming Down”. Dominic Del Curto-“ This year has been mostly about going back to the drawing board for me. There has been a lot of listening to new music, practicing, learning new techniques, and songs composing and recording. I have really used this opportunity to return to being a student of music. I had forgotten how satisfying it is to just sit and study music for its own sake. I also took an online banjo class taught by an amazing performer and teacher Catherine (BB) Bowness. The class was so engaging and challenging it was like learning the banjo all over again! finally, I have been recording everything I have been learning at the Sound Chamber in Modesto. During COVID I have recorded two original banjo instrumentals and one traditional fiddle tune. I am currently working on three more singles to be released this Summer. I will be out playing some live dates this Summer and I look forward to that! https://dominicdelcurto.hearnow.com/ camellia-drums The neighborhood community concerts born out of necessity have become an ingenious alternative during COVID-19, for information on booking your own neighborhood concert please inquire at 021giant@charter.net

Raul hails from the small town of Grayson CA, where music was part of the family. At the suggestion of his brother, he started playing Bass with the main influence Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Influenced by some of the Funk and Soul players like James Brown, Stevie Wonder, RHCP, and Youtube creators such as Davie 504, Adam Neely and especially Jacob Collier. Well, folks thanks to all you good people doing the right thing, wearing masks, social distancing and getting that Soul Vaccination, things are improving. Remember to reach out and be kind as a lot of us struggling right now, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Bicycle Safety & Maintenance By Efren Martinez

Now that Spring has sprung I’ve been noticing more cyclists on the road during my own rides. With more people on the road biking, I also have been stopping more often along the way to help a fellow cyclist do some onsite repairs. All too often many cyclists go month after month never paying much attention to routine bike maintenance before each ride. I admit I too have been guilty of this kind of behavior. Outside of just checking the air pressure before a ride I often pay very little attention to the other safety parts of my bike’s mechanics. Just recently I took my bike into our friends at Fun Sports Bikes in Modesto to get my road bike tuned up. To my surprise my bike needed much more than just a simple tune-up, it needed a full overhaul. As the list went on and on of the service my bike needed so did the cost. It’s no secret that cycling is not only a great fitness outlet but it’s equally an expensive one too. What I learned from my friend Brian Zahra, who’s the owner at Fun Sports Bikes, was that I could have helped keep the cost down by keeping up on my routine maintenance. Keeping your chain well oiled as well as inspecting/adjusting your bikes gears, tires, rims, brakes before each ride is recommended. In other words, look for issues that may happen before they happen. Just like the saying goes, “an ounce of prevention.” I admit my bike needed a bit more than a simple gear adjustment, I needed new tires, a new chain, a new gear de-railer, new tape and brakes as well as a tune-up. It turned out to be quite costly equal to a month of my Sunday’s weekly allowance. No matter, safety first and I needed to have it done. When your bike is well maintained it keeps the costs down for the future and you know you’re going to have a safe ride. When we share the road with cars it can be like flying through an asteroid field out there. Our

bikes need to be able to stop as well as downshift in a split second when that light is about to turn red. For this kind of detailed service and repairs, I was fortunate to have Aiden Armstrong, a bike technician, at Fun Sport Bikes work on my bike. His professionalism, as well as skills, were impeccable. Outside of him who kept calling me Sir, it was a comforting pleasure to have him work on my bike. Thank you Aiden I appreciate the term of endearment “Sir” but please call me Efren. Sir would be my grandfather. Aiden did a great job on my bike. That following weekend I took it out for a 30-mile bike ride and it rode perfectly. It was like riding a new bike but even better! I’m all set now for my Summer rides. Like I said it’s all about safety when it comes to making sure your bike is well maintained but never forget the personal safety checklist before heading out for a ride. Below is my newly revised own personal safety checklist that I go through before each ride. I’d invite you to check it out and perhaps adopt some of the items on my checklist to help keep you safe on the road. Cheers to your health! There are plenty of reasons to love May. It’s the start of summer, flowers are blooming, and you can finally begin entertaining outdoors again without worry again. May ushers in the warmer months with fun holidays and food days, from Cinco de Mayo to Mother’s Day. Ms M is enjoying the change in the neighborhood and realizes now as things are slowly opening, it’s best to get out and enjoy them again. Here are a few things you might enjoy checking out while saving some change. Let’s play ball! The Modesto Nuts are welcoming the Stockton Ports on May 4th to kick off their season for opening night! ALL AGES VIEW Happy May Modesto!

This month we are going to see all of the beautiful flowers that April’s showers have brought to us. A few weeks ago, I participated in Modesto Garden Club’s Spring Garden Tour. There is no way I would rather spend my Saturday morning than on Magnolia Avenue, enjoying magnificent backyards and meeting some of the most down-to-earth people. Whether you missed this event or couldn’t get enough, the Garden Club sends out a monthly newsletter that you can access on www.modestogardenclub. org to find more information on garden tours, workshops, luncheons, and fundraisers. Seeing the beautifully maintained gardens on Magnolia reminded me of

how important it is to maintain not only our community, but also our Earth. According to the US EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency), “A typical passenger vehicle emits about 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year.” Your carbon footprint can be decreased significantly by choosing rail travel when possible. I have spent many weekends on the San Joaquins Amtrak route that runs all the way from Bakersfield to Oakland with stops such as Modesto, Stockton, and Emeryville. In fact, the Emeryville station is only a few yards away from BART, making this the perfect, and most efficient, way to travel into the city. While on the train, you have the advantage of taking in the scenery as well as the option to catch up on work—both of which cannot really be done while driving on Interstate 580. Personally, I enjoyed writing my school papers as the train ran along the Suisun Bay. Even at the age of fourteen, I was able to travel as an unaccompanied minor under the condition that a parent signed off on both sides of my trip. This gave me a sense of independence and allowed me to visit my friends in the Bay Area before I had a license, but in all honesty, it is still my preferred form of travel, even at seventeen. Once again, I hope that you were inspired this month. Whether that is to support a local club or possibly even plan a trip on California’s extensive railway system, stay active, stay involved, and most importantly, stay safe Modesto
