W E I V TING
GREE Greetings Friends,
We are a month away from Graffiti Summer, but it is May where we really step on the gas and get running fast. It was so amazing to see so many people out helping make Modesto better at Love Modesto. Thank you all to those that donated to our Walk A Mile team as we ended up the #1 team and helped a really important organization. I have said it before a million times, it is the volunteer spirit of Modesto that makes it special. Plus, it makes us feel better about the place we live, and trust me, there are many reasons. It is so exciting to see 10th St running at nearly full speed, the events are booked again, the music is in the streets, the stores are open, and the restaurant patios are busy, people are going to see shows at the State, Gallo, Prospect and Brenden and it feels good again and the late night tunes keep us going with some live music. It is like this all over town now. Part of feeling good about where we live is our amazing culture. Two things in particular for me this month and both of them related. May the 4th, aka Star Wars Day is something that came from the mind of a Modestan! None of us really know when George Lucas thought up the Force, but it sure started with his creative comic book times when he was growing up with the many illustrated battles between good and evil. It actually feels a little too close
MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE
to reality right now though. I was in Disneyland last month, and it feels so good to walk through Star Wars land and as a Modestan, I felt some kind of entitlement that this all came from our hometown hero. But that’s just the start. And #2, we are on the onramp to Graffiti Summer celebrating American Graffiti that started it all and it all began on 10th and 11th Streets in 1962. Wow. Don’t you love it? I love a good story. What makes this all really cool is that cruising was being out and about, getting out of the house, exploring and hanging out with friends. When I was growing up here in the late 60s and early 70s, my bicycle was my freedom and I went everywhere. Today, with all of the technology and an entire world available on your phone, it is even more important today to GO OUTSIDE and explore. We have so much nearby. We can hike, picnic, ride, camp, swim, play and so much more and we showcase some of the cool things you can do this month. The more you explore, the more you learn enjoy where we live. There is a new park ranger program starting and Chief Gillespie tells us about it in this issue and we have a pile of things to check out on page 16. I hope you take the time to explore, celebrate our Star Wars, our Moms, our families, veterans, our great food scene, and our
music. These are really good things that make living worthwhile. Our local businesses that live here, work here and play here are the ones we need to support when we eat, drink and shop. I am so grateful for the great businesses and organizations that help us spread the good word in our community, with their advertising. These are the people that hire people here in town and keep our economy going. We are like a race team with sponsors, and we appreciate every one of them and hope you do to. When you go out, tell people you saw it in the VIEW and please let me know what you like or don’t like so we can make each issue better than the one before. Come check out my band Third Party at Chefs of New York on the 12th, Porchfest on the 22nd and hope you see you at May the 4th downtown and so much more. May the 4th be with you, Jedi Chris Murphy chrism@modestoview.com
On the cover -
Our ace photo artist MJ Mangano can’t resist blending our amazing Star Wars and American Graffiti culture. Why not, since they are created by the same guy, our own George Lucas. In Modesto it is May the 4th and Graffiti Summer all year long. Enjoy our great history and celebrate this month. May the 4th Be With you. And don’t forget the Revenge of the 5th. When I first met Mae, she was a bit despondent and a lot determined! We were delivering a motorized scooter to her…but what she was really getting was some freedom. Mae lives in a board and care home in a small town and, due to COPD and other health issues, cannot walk far. She couldn’t even make it to the corner store for a cup of Coca-Cola…her favorite. I tried to chat with her a bit…small talk really. But as she sat on that bright red scooter, she looked at me and said, “I gotta go!” The last time I saw Mae, she was humming to herself headed to the corner store for her beloved soda. I did get a glimpse of her as we drove away – she was driving her scooter in circles and figure eights in the parking lot with a huge smile on her face.

When I first heard about Emilio, I only knew that his mom was hesitant to bring him to our adapted sports events. She was afraid, that due to his physical impairment, he wouldn’t be able to participant in a meaningful way and be embarrassed or discouraged. After a few laps around the skating rink with apparatus to support him and surrounded by his peers, she realized he would be just fine in our adapted sports programs. His mom reached out to us after that day saying, “Thank you for putting on the skating event! I truly appreciate you guys. I’ve always been too afraid to let our son participate. Watching him skate, I saw how happy this made him and I’d like to sign him up for Winter snow Skiing. This event gave me the push we needed to try new activities and not restrict him due to our own fear.” The last time I saw Emilio, he was pulling in from a trip down the ski run in one of our specialized “sit ski chairs.” He was fresh faced from the brisk winter air and grinning ear to ear, as were his parents when they saw him. I hear that he slept, with a smile on his face, all the way home. For 75 years, the Society for disABILITIES
has been bringing smiles to the faces of our clients and their caregivers. We work tirelessly to enhance lives in our community through our Medical Equipment Loan Closet, Adapted Sports Programs and Thrift Store career rehabilitation. Since our founding in 1947 and through seven name changes, we have persevered and grown in our mission to enhance the lives of people with disabilities. Today we serve over 6,000 individuals per year. Please join us as we celebrate our 75th year of service to the most vulnerable in our community…volunteer, donate and refer. You can help us bring smiles to those who need us most!

How do you know of a hometown hero? Someone who calls your attention Not to themselves, but instead the work at hand. There is such an unsung person, so I shall Christen his Ship of Good Deeds with the pennant Operation 9-2-99, and you can surmise the rest. At his steady helm, his teams have cleaned trails Along the scenic, but littered Tuolumne River Of its tires and tarps and whatever lies there, By the ton, through the years, and for no pay at all. If they are not worthy of praise, then no-one is. How can you become a hometown hero? That position’s always available, open to all; You qualify just with your heart and will. This could be the start of something small But worthwhile, so why not try it on? Helping out others might fit you well, so Maybe put down those shiny trinkets, Pick up a tool, some gloves or a shovel To beautify or tidy up where you can. Search your local patch where there is need, Perform one deed to make your city better. Thank you Chris Guptill for all you do for our city and our neighborhoods. Please join in and lend a hand to this project. It is a sad commentary that people leave such items to be cleaned up, and our community is grateful for people like Chris and Darin Jesberg that champion the beauty of our local rivers and creeks Like, follow and help here > @Operation9.2.99 - Chris Murphy

MAY DAY! MAY DAY! By Jim Christiansen

From the Fuzio Patio
MAY DAY! May Day! Ever had that disaster where the China Cabinet crashes to the floor, with flying crockery, glass, wood, and metal parts scattered everywhere? Fear not. You can upcycle, repurpose, and recycle that debris into Art. The featured show at Mistlin Gallery this month is “Trash to Treasures” which features all that application, and found object art. I will not be in this show but do things like this for my art garden and studio shop. Pallets can become a table or garden bench. Broken glass and crockery shards become Mosaics. Karen Kingsley will be teaching a Mosaic workshop at Mistlin, on May 7 and 8. Other classes for adults and children are offered this month, with Family Open Art Studio on May 14. Mistlin will also open the season on their Grace Lieberman Cabaret Series on May 28. Featured is the internationally known group Golden Bough, specializing in Celtic music of Ireland and Scotland. This is a fundraiser for the Central California Art Association, with tickets available online at ccaagallery.org Venture down the street and check out Picasso’s Gourmet Deli and Gallery. The dining parklet often has some art on display. Inside the restaurant, on display are the paintings of owner Jordi Camps and friends. I see art change up the street at Preservation Coffee and Tea. Concetta has art on the walls, as most of our bistros, and bars in the Art Block district. Murals on the alleys. While it is a good idea to support Third Thursday Art Walk, take a walk down anytime, you find Art rocks in the downtown environment. This month’s Art Walk is May 19. Dragonfly Art for Life, near Café Deva, State Theatre, Bouquet Bar, The Farmacy, LoFi, E and E Studio, and Reform Pilates are all on the map. Peer Recovery Art Project on Tenth usually opens with some music, this month continuing show by Tito and Fernando music-themed FOLLOW US:

paintings, with a Car Show coming up end of the month. For a new spot to find artists and crafters, Sam and Dave’s Market next door to Firkin and Fox. Chartreuse Muse will continue their current show “Cultivate and Garden” through this month, with an artist talk Third Thursday during the art walk. Look for art during DoMo Market, and The Black Hearts Market. Exploding at MJC, are the murals around the old Grange Company, and the Art Gallery at MJC East Campus. Across the street on Tully, the Kruse-Lucas Gallery features the artwork of Janet Hardie. A special showing of Dan Petersen Art Works coming up in June at Mistlin Gallery. Former instructor icon at Modesto Junior College, this will be among the last showings of his works. Recycling some old news from my art activities, hope to be back at Mistlin Life Drawing sessions Wednesdays from 7 to 9 pm. Only ten dollars, it covers model costs, open to any skill level. My own four paintings at Westside Theatre in Newman will be up the rest of this month, then make way for a new artist. The signs I make up for Open Studio from recycled plywood or hardboard, cardboard, will be used at my studio, and made into signs for Modesto Porchfest, where I host the band “Band Neighbors.” Then I will reuse them as needed for the Riverdance Farms Pick and Gather, featuring music, art, food and vendors, and U-Pick organic blueberries, cherries and strawberries. This is down in Livingston.

DIY Main Street Turlock Cocktail Crawl
Ah, Downtown Turlock! There is something so cute and quaint about this sliver of the Central Valley. It’s modern, but you see its old agriculture roots everywhere you look: brick buildings, iron wrought gates and fences, concrete planters filled with flowers in bloom. If you want to be taken back in time but still enjoy all the pleasantries of the 21st Century-I suggest walking a “cocktail crawl” of Main Street! Check out each business’s Facebook or Yelp for hours. Call your Uber, get dropped off, spend an evening sampling all the fine foods and drinks of Wine Street, then call your Uber for a ride home. Always DD, have fun, and sip on, friends! *Note: These are in order of our preference: feel free to visit them in any order you like! Drink plenty of water pre-crawl.
Loza Wine & Crepes
601 E. Main St. Turlock One of our favorite restaurants in Turlock! Loza’s often features Tsymbal Wines in their cocktails and mimosas, and anything made with Tsymbal’s Honey Wine is going to taste DELICIOUS. If you can’t pick just one flavor, get a mimosa flight. We recommend starting here since they close earlier than the others and you can pre-game with some food, too.
Bistro 234
234 E. Main St. Turlock Upscale dining without the snobbery or high price tag. Their chicken dishes are divine-always so flavorful and never, ever dry-but we’re recommending their desserts on this crawl. Cheesecake, pies and macarons, oh my! You never know what the “favor of the day” will be, so come dine often to try them all. They recently introduced new cocktails: Spicy Pena, Berry Delight, Brule Old Fashioned and Blue Fantasy. (You have to get the Blue Fantasy if you’re drinking on May the Fourth Be With You, a must it is.)
MAMA VIEW
Show Etiquette .By Middagh Goodwin Over the last few months I have seen, read and heard things that make me believe that many of you do not understand basic show etiquette. Everything from showing up early to a gig, to watching all the bands and not asking to be put on a guest list(this is a bigger problem now more than ever before because bands and venues need every dollar they can get to make up for the last 2 years of lost revenue.) If you are a fan make sure you share the event, check-in when you get to the venue, take a picture and post it on social media, and afterwards comment on both the venue and artists’ pages about your great night out. This goes a long way and encourages your friends to go the next time the band plays or there is an event at the venue. Artists advance your shows, email or call the venue a few days before you are scheduled to perform and confirm details; when you load in, when you go on and how long the set is, and any other details that will make things easier all around. Find out who your point of contact is on the day of the show, introduce yourself when you get to the venue and let them know who should get paid. Don’t wait until you are about to go on to ask for your drink tickets or food if that is provided. For venues, promoters and bands, create an event for all your engagements and keep your social media or website updated. Share
the event and invite your friends and fans to come out. Go the extra mile, create a flyer and put up at the venue and around town, not just on social media. If there is a door charge and you do have guests(which I said before should be few to none as we get back to normal), check them in early or give your list to the point of contact or doorman when you get to the show. If you are a bandmember, crew or guest check-in at the door, don’t just walk in like you own the place, remember respect goes both ways. This last piece of advice includes me and anyone else in the ever-expanding world of press and promotion, regardless of if you are with a local or regional paper or magazine, blog or social media influencer, or just a photographer who is friends with the opening band. Follow whatever protocols the venue has, from no to only flash photography for the first 3 songs to where you can take pictures. Often times there will be press junkets before the show where you can interview the artists make sure you are preapproved, show up early, and make sure you are prepared. Post your story or pictures in a timely manner and tag the artists, promoter and venue in all posts. These are just a few basics that should be obvious but unfortunately more often than not are not.
Cuts Steakhouse
142 W. Main St. Turlock Their cocktail menu is *on point*. One of my favorite cocktails is the Jack Rose, and their Jack Rose is *chef ’s kiss* the best ever. (Pictured below: applejack, grenadine and lemon.) If that’s not your jam try the Navy Grog or the Whiskey Sour. Their Sour has egg white in it which makes the drink so creamy-dreamy you’ll want a second. You should also try their brunch sometime this month-I hear there’s a day for Mom coming up soon and you should take her to Cuts!
Cru
130 W. Main St. Turlock DJ’s often rock this house on Friday & Saturday nights, so keep up with their Facebook page to see what’s happening. Heads up: Cru has a dress code and it is enforced, but that won’t stop you from having a fantastic time! We recommend the LemonDrop (which you can get in a sugar-free version!) to keep your buzz up without overwhelming you.
Udder Place
110 W. Main St. Turlock Home of the infamous Beer Pong Tournaments! You won’t go wrong ending your night here. Dance til you drop & stay out way too late-the perfect way to end your evening. Plenty of room to get your dance on but plenty of tables if you want to chat with your buddies. With their full bar you can get whatever you want. You can’t go wrong with an Old Fashioned or a Pineapple Upside Down Cake.

It is so very important that we remember all of those who served defending our freedom. What is happening in Ukraine now reminds us how important freedom and independence is and how fragile democracy can be without those that serve with honor. We celebrate honor those who serve and have served with very special events this year. Lakewood Cemetery – May 30, 1 pm This will be a very special presentation organized by Modesto’s SFC Steve Trapp with special appearances and speeches by Maj. Gen. Miles Davis, Col. John Rogers and the 191st Army Band. The 2022 theme is “This Memorial Day, We Tell Their Story”. Special thanks to the Modesto Sea Cadets who will place flags on Veteran headstones and the Enochs High School Drum Line, and Michael & Suzanne Akard. Please bring a lawn chair so you can enjoy this event that honors those who served. Acacia Park – A ceremony will begin at 11 am on Monday May 30 with a short band concert from the Turlock Music Cadets Alumni and taps with a full flag ceremony and military honors. Flags will line the roadways. Memorial Day Classic 5K – May 28 You can run in this patriotic event that benefits the Delta Vet Center. Veterans will prepare a pancake breakfast for all runners and volunteers with a short ceremony after the run. Something for Everyone at the Modesto GrubHubs
By Chris Murphy
Kristen, Greg and Kevin Reed What do you do when you and your family or friends can’t make up their mind about where to go to lunch or dinner? Does this happen to you where you go around the group and ask what sounds good? Pizza? Mexican? Burgers? Waffles? Pretzels? What do you do? Well friends, all you need to do is head downtown to the GrubHubs at 9th and G Streets. No matter what you are craving, you can find something that you will love, and so will everyone else in your group. Greg and Kristen Reed owned this land and after a trucking company departed, they were wondering what to do there. They knew that the Courthouse would be across the street in a few years and when they were San Francisco and in Reno enjoying the container and food truck places, the idea hit them to bring it to Modesto. Three years ago, the GrubHubs was born. Modesto has a good food truck culture and some pretty famous ones, but there wasn’t yet a central place to bring them all together. So Greg decided build a place, anchored by their own BBQ place and create a premium space that would be clean and safe and would attract people from all parts of town, commuters, workers, family, people grabbing a quick lunch and so much

Central Vally TV’s Carlos Rodriguez gets his Krepe Dog for the road more. Despite fairly complicated planning and construction obstacles, the sign went up on the corner, and soon Greg had a waiting list and today, all of the spaces have commitments. The very first one to sign up was Franci’s Papusas. She has been there since and is one of the favorites to this day. Nice asphalt, great covered seating, clean restrooms and even a space for music during the summer months. Twisty’s now operates the space of the former BBQ place and offers beer and wine with a segregated beer garden space. Up to 18 different trucks are there offering just about everything. You can find amazing wood fired pizzas, super tasty Krepe Dogs, Mango Crazy, and even premium Italian entrees that rival

a white tablecloth place at Braulio’s Bistro. Personally, I am hooked on birria tacos. One of the most consistent places in town to get them regularly is the El Mexicano food truck. They make everything there, but I only order one thing. The consome is really delicious for dipping, the tacos are firm and pan fried but filled with very soft tender beef. It goes down really well with a fresh mango drink. Kevin Reed’s favorite is the Margherita pizza. Pizza is great anytime and Harrison enjoyed the pepperoni pizza and of course, there are many great pizza choices. Abigail had the ceviche, Harrison a pizza, Middagh a burrito and a bottle of Coke, and Greg and Kristen had barria tacos. Something for everyone. When it was time for desert, there was
one thing that jumped up front and center, churros. There are pretzels, churros, blended fruit, aguas frescas, donuts and a variety of things that are desert friendly from the Churro Place with amazing caramel filled churros, or the Sweet Lab. The one big challenge is that there are just too many choices to make for one visit, so you will need to plan a return. Since we did this story, I have already been back once for more tacos and will be there again next week. Make sure you take a break and check out Modesto’s GrubHubs.

PORCHFEST VIEW
By Chris Murphy Let the celebrations begin as Porchfest is back! There will be more music on our street too. The best recommendation is to take your bike from place to place as there is good bike parking. Also, some of the houses have some nice grass area or adjacent parks were you can bring an ice chest and camp out for Kate, Ruhi and Trisha, who also bring us the day. It is up to you. Please make sure ModShop in the fall, have set the date of May that you take your trash with you. 22 for the biggest community wide concert. Make sure that you check the Modesto There are over 30 porches in the neighborPorchfest schedule at www.modestoporchhoods surrounding downtown Modesto fest.com and also make sure you check that will be hosting bands on their porches. ModestoView.com for updates as well. There will be music on over 30 porches from noon to 5 pm and you can make your way from porch to porch, sampling the great music that Modesto has to offer. There is everything from spoken word, acoustic singer songwriters, to classic rock and beyond, representing a pretty cool cross-section of the Modesto Area Music talent. These porch concerts are free to enjoy, but please generously tip at each location for the bands. That would be so very appreciated everything is donated. I am very excited as we will have bands from 11:30 am to 5 pm at my house featuring the Vibes, Third Party, Triple D and the return of Marirose Powell.

INTERVIEW
Sarah Dentan, Stanislaus County Library Director
By Chris Murphy The pandemic has changed so much. So many things were closed, some adapted and some went away. On the other hand, some things changed and may even be stronger now after making it through. The Stanislaus County library is one of those institutions. During the pandemic, library services, mobile book check out and other elements became a lifeline for many. Now the Library is offering even more services, including workforce development and even a new way to get State Park passes and you can do your part to Go Outside this month. We took some time to get caught up with what is happening with Sarah Dentan, Stanislaus County Library Director. She filled us in with some great information. ModestoView: As libraries are one of the great public gathering and information places of the modern world, how have things changed since the retreat of the pandemic? Sarah Dentan: Like every other organization, the library had to pivot and find new ways to provide service. We offered no-contact pickup of materials, virtual programs like story time, book clubs and trivia nights, and take-home crafts and STEAM activities. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) We created a digital services library card to enable people to apply for a card online and begin using digital resources without coming into the library. Offerings of eBooks, downloadable audiobooks, and other digital resources were expanded. Now that restrictions have loosened, libraries are getting back to offering services in a more traditional manner, but some changes are likely here to stay. MV: What are new services that the library is offering? SD: There are a lot of new offerings, supporting literacy development and learning. Read-to-Me kits contain books, music, a puppet or storytelling prop, and tips to help parents and caregivers create a story time experience at home. The themed kits check out in easy-to-carry tote bags, which is helpful for parents with kids in tow. Welcome to Reading kits are also packaged in tote bags with books and activities to help emerging readers succeed in reading independently. These themed kits each contain four books in English and two in Spanish or bilingual English/Spanish, one activity based on a reading skill, and a bilingual tip sheet for parents/caregivers. Through a California State Library/Library Services and Technology Act copycat grant, our library has established the “Uke Got This!” program, first developed by the Los Angeles Public Library. Participants can attend a class to learn the basics of playing the ukulele. The Ukulele Kits, consisting of a ukulele, tuner, carrying case, and instruction/song books, can also be checked out for independent use. MV: Are some of the old favorites, like Story Time, back again? SD: Yes, Story Times are back at the larger library branches and smaller branches are preparing to restart in-person story times in the coming months. Attendance is limited, so advance registration is required for each story time meeting at this time. The Summer Reading Challenge continued throughout the pandemic, although participation was reduced, especially during the time libraries were closed. So, we want everyone to know that the Summer Reading Challenge is available for all ages, and participants can track their reading using the convenient Beanstack app. This summer’s challenge, “Read Beyond the Beaten Path” takes place May 17 through August 2. MV: Just how do people get library cards nowadays SD: Signing up for a library card is easier than ever now. You can complete the library card application online or at a kiosk inside the library. Library staff complete the processing and issue the physical cards. Please bring a government-issued photo ID, and two pieces of mail addressed to you and postmarked within 30 days. Library cards do expire after three years, but renewing takes just a few minutes to confirm that the cardholder’s contact information is still accurate. You actually keep the same physical card. This is also a good time to remind folks that it’s important to report a lost or stolen library card, so the account can be deactivated to prevent fraudulent use.

MV: It sounds like the library is increasing the focus on teaching job and business skills, what is happening? SD: The Stanislaus County Library, in a partnership with the Stanislaus County Workforce Development department, offers expanded access to career resources and services for job seekers. The services include access to CAreer Pathways, a collection of online job training created with American Rescue Plan Act funds. People can get free access to skill-building and self-improvement opportunities from some of the top online learning companies, such as Coursera and LinkedIn Learning. Additional online resources include LearningExpress, Northstar Digital Learning, Skillshare, and JobNow/VetNow. These subscription-based services would be cost prohibitive for most people, totaling well over $1,000 per year. Learn more at www. stanislauslibrary.org/career_pathways.shtm

MV: How does the State Park Pass checkout work and are there other things like this that people may not know about? SD: The Stanislaus County Library offers free California State Park day-use passes, available for 14-day checkout with a library card. The new vehicle day-use passes provide entry at more than 200 participating state park units. They are not valid for perperson entry or tour fees, boat use, camping or special events. For more information and a list of eligible parks, please visit www. CheckOutCAStateParks.com To request a vehicle day-use pass, search “California Parks Pass” in the library’s online catalog; access the catalog at www.stanislauslibrary. org or the Stanislaus Library app. The California State Library Parks Pass program is a partnership between California State Parks and the California State Library, supported with funds from the State of California. BIG VIEW
By Chris Murphy
Did you know we have so many public spaces waiting for you? One of the most important recommendations I
can make is to turn off the TV, put down the game controller and get out and about and explore. Many of these things don’t cost anything and you can enjoy hanging out with your friends and family, make a picnic lunch or dinner and enjoy some of the vistas. You can even just go up Del Puerto and park on an overlook, or check out LaGrange or even just take a quick break at one of our city parks. The more we use the parks and enjoy what they have to offer, the safer they get as we are all out there looking out for each other. Plus, you can be a lot more healthy as you run, walk or ride along our trails or even take your bike downtown for brunch. You feel like you earn that extra helping of hashbrowns or bacon. Modesto is only 10 miles across, so it is pretty easy to get where you want to go from anywhere, and best of all, it is flat. Check out some of these fun options and enjoy this transition from spring to summer.
Hiking...
Go Climb a Rock!
There are so many places to scramble and hike in our area. Who knows, the next Royal Robbins may be out there scrambling somewhere. There are a lot of fun places along the Stanislaus and Tuolumne River, but one of the most epic and most beautiful places in the WORLD to rock scramble and rock climb is Yosemite, located right up the hill via 120 and 132 (the John Muir Highway) Please note, that reservations are required. If you don’t do Yosemite, try Hetch Hetchy. You can book in advance and there are some day passes that go on sale each morning at 8 am PST. If you have a hotel, camping, back country or Half Dome pass, you do not need an additional reservation. https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/reservations.htm
Playing...
There has been a lot of activity making sure our area kids have some great places to play and more are in development now. The Parks and Neighborhood department has been working hard through the pandemic and there are new parks in East LaLoma Park with some great kids play areas. You can find new parks and family spaces in each of our Stanislaus county cities. Many of these parks have little climbing walls, cool bridges and a lot of spiral slides. I know my grandson is loving the slides. There is a new activity guide with cool things for kids to do that you can sign up for. The Splash Pads will be opening on May 27!
Ashley Weaver Says:
Our entire team in the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department is excited to jump into Summer. We have family friendly offerings planned throughout the summer including free movies in the park, aquatics, Jr. Giants baseball, CSI Camp, tennis, soccer, adult softball and much more. Recreational swim returns along with swim lessons for all ages. Splash Pads will be running May 27 through September 5 (Memorial Day - Labor Day), 11:00am - 7:00pm. We can’t wait to see you! Picnicing...
Day trips mean more now than they did 2 years ago. The ability to get out with a small group of family and friends was a lifesaver during Covid. Hopefully during that time, you found some wonderful places to take your Pic-a-nic basket full up goodies and spread out the blanket for a fun and relaxing time. There are so many cool little spots around like the Native Garden Park in LaLoma, Roberts Ferry, Knights Ferry, Columbia, and many of our parks, where you can bring your own little happiness.
Camping...
You hear the horror stories of trying to get a campsite in Yosemite, but did you realize there are some other great and fun places to camp with your family and friends? Caswell Park is right here near Modesto, Woodward is right outside of Oakdale and both feel like you are on a getaway. You can regularly check the Yosemite available as they do have many cancellations and some same day offerings.
County Parks...
There are some places you can go to get some mountain biking, boating, hiking, windsurfing, picnicking, camping and so much more. There is so much variety with Woodward Reservoir, Laird Park, Frank Raines Park, LaGrange Park and Modesto Reservoir, all offering a very different experience. Woodward has been home to some amazing music festivals and Modesto Reservoir offers some great boating and recreation. Woodward even has a model airplane and go kart section. If you get a chance to get up in the west side foothills, Frank Rains offers amazing vistas and trails. Don’t forget, you can go to the Stanislaus County Library and check out a day pass. http://www.stancounty.com/parks/ FOLLOW US:

There is a huge 250 acre state park that is within 30 minutes from our area located along the banks of the Stanislaus River that snakes through the park with many trails, featuring full service camping, water play areas, oak riparian woodland areas with many nature outlooks and wildlife observation area. There are ranger and campfire programs and swimming is permitted. https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=557
Cycling...
During April, Modesto’s Gateway Park hosted a highprofile mountain bike race. Over the last few years, the Dry Creek Trail Group and the Modesto Composite Mountain Bike club has developed a really cool network of trails that parallel the Tuolumne River at 9th Street. These are great places to check out for riders of any ability and you can get a rockin’ workout as you navigate the twists and turns and the up and down profiles. Consider this one of the best cardio events you can do and have a lot of fun at the same time. There are also some road racing / riding clubs where you can do non-competitive group evening and weekend rides. There is a regular Wednesday evening ride at Fun Sport Bikes at 6 pm and the Dry Creek Trail Riders host regular rides as well. Check out the bike trails, and also take time and sign up to help keep this area clean and developed by joining up with the Operation 9 to 99 group and the Dry Creek Trail Coalition, lead by Chris Guptill and Darin Jesberg respectively. PARK RANGER VIEW
New Park Ranger Program
One of the most important issues for the use of parks is safety. There are so many issues and problems that could create issues in our public spaces, so Modesto worked on an innovative alternative. Modesto Police Chief Brandon Gillespie and his team have created a new Park Ranger program that creates a new kind of officer that is matched to handle issues that may happen in our parks, and create a new kind of patrol that can engage with the people. Lieutenant Brian Kleiber and Captain Robert Reyna will be overseeing the program. Modesto City Councilperson Chris Ricci has been a champion for this program. We asked Chief Gillespie to tell us about the new program. ModestoView: What are your hopes for the implementation of the Park Ranger Program? Chief Gillespie: Our city strives to be an inviting and safe community with thriving
By Chris Murphy neighborhoods. Ensuring city parks, open spaces, and trails are safe and attractive place for our citizens to enjoy helps achieve this vision. The Modesto Police Department responds to approximately 300-400 calls for service throughout the city each day and does not have the staffing resources to provide a sustained presence in city parks to conduct outreach and enforcement duties in an effort to connect individuals to services and abate illegal or prohibited activity. Police officers are dispatched to calls for service based on threat level and this can result in long delays for park calls since they are often related to low-level crimes and/or quality of life issues. By implementing this Park Ranger Program we believe it will help achieve a sustained presence in our city parks, trails, and open spaces, and reduce illegal and unwanted behavior. Park Rangers duties will include but are not limited to: • Provide a regular and sustained presence in any city parks • Act as city ambassadors to the public • Provide outreach and resources to those experiencing homelessness • Educate community members on laws and local ordinances
• Enforce laws, city ordinances, and rules and regulations within city parks • Work closely with community groups and city staff to identify issues, concerns, and trends in assigned areas MV: How will they best be able to patrol the many areas and acres of our park areas? CG: The Park Rangers will primarily use trucks to patrol our parks and open spaces but may also use electric bikes, foot patrol, or any other means that facilitate access to these areas. MV: How can the community help with
this important project.? CG: The community can help by staying in contact with our Parks and Rec Department as well as the Police Department to keep us aware of what is going on in the parks. We can keep abreast of our community’s needs and develop the best response when citizens keep us informed by communicating with us through email, the GoModesto App, or our dispatch center to report problems. I also encourage our community to interact with the Park Ranger’s when they see them. Say hi, get to know them and let them know what is going on and how things are going.

lineup. I got to introduce one of Modesto’s finest and most accomplished young artists, Valley Talent Project grand prize winner Alida McKeon, to the festival audience.
Modesto Unplugged turns ten years old this month, and what an enriching and exhausting adventure it has been. Close to 400 different artists have been featured in my series...helping cultivate original songwriters and youth artists...zipping all over America as a tour manager...playing pack mule for musicians...stage managing a few events...and supporting and enjoying countless hundreds of other musical happenings around town. Here’s a special look back at some highlights of the journey so far. 2012: My first downtown showcase, at the Barkin Dog Grill. A month later, the inaugural weekend MUMfest at various venues. That year I got to present showcases with three of my top five favorite lyricists: Brett Detar, Mary Bue, and Chris Doud (with The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit.) 2013: My highest-profile showcase that fall starred the Ronstadt Generations family band - Linda’s brother & two nephews. The music spilt over from the Barkin Dog to a small gathering at my place. Members of a musical royal family playing songs right on my couch! What an evening. 2015: Organizers of the SF Free Folk Festival invited me to host their evening concert

2017: I was invited to join the judging panel of a junior high talent show, where the champion, Kalea Jackson, would go on to win the grand prize at the Valley Talent Project two years later. That was the beginning of a beautiful friendship between Kalea and her mom. That fall, Modesto Unplugged took home its first MAMA Award in the ‘best promoter’ category. This brings us to this year. May music at the Dragonfly: Friday 5/6, They Catch Secrets, a new acoustic pop/rock youth band featuring Mapuana, who recently headlined our Young Artist series. Friday 5/13, Melodia Amaya presents ‘Freedom Through Voices,’ a program of fado, opera & pop songs with a few guest performers. Saturday 5/21, Gravey (TJ Lake & Meko Diaz) return to the gallery with another dose of down-home Americana jams. Friday 5/27, Charlize Elizabeth gives a solo set followed by a stripped-down set by her band Portrait Of Elysia. If you dig the style of Evanescence you’ll enjoy this one. I’ve enjoyed watching Charlize grow creatively and her new project has the potential to be one of Modesto’s great new indie rock acts. All shows start at 7:30 and come with a $10 admission. That review ultimately yielded a productive collaboration between the City and the community to ensure the continued preservation of a Modesto Landmark. The recent meeting of the LPC was focused on making sure the documented record of three City Landmarks accurately reflected their historical significance. Further, the 2022 Chair and ViceChair were selected unanimously by the Commissioners in attendance – of which Lisa Lomas was appointed ViceChair and I was appointed Chair. I greatly appreciate the opportunity to serve in this role, and I look forward to working with all Landmark Preservation Commissioners in future matters and preservation efforts. The Commission adopted resolutions to update the names and descriptions of Landmarks 44 and 51 to better reference original and prominent previous owners, and of Landmark 52 to capture the greater significance of Coffee Airport’s history to what is now the closed Municipal Golf Course. With adoption of the 1910 City Charter, Modesto’s municipal airport was the first in
the country to be expressly referenced in its city charter, where the City was granted the authority to “regulate the use of…flying devices.” An airport was laid out and facilities completed by 1920. Shortly after in 1921, the airfield was named in honor of Harold Coffee, a well-accomplished local aviator who while flying back to Oakland from Yosemite died at the age of 23 when the plane crashed at the intersection of Linden and Madison Streets in Modesto. After about a decade in service, the City ultimately moved the airport to its current location. I believe the task of landmark and historical preservation is and should be an ongoing endeavor. We are fortunate many landmarks have been designated since the Landmark Preservation Program was established in 1988, and those landmarks deserve the attention needed to ensure they continue to stand as points of historical interest. Also, there are still well-loved icons in downtown and throughout Modesto’s neighborhoods with their own unique contributions to our City’s history that likely meet benchmarks for landmark status. So, if you own or know the owner of a Modesto icon currently without landmark status and think it deserves a second look, I invite you to review Landmark Preservation. Basketball Fitness
FIT VIEW
By Efren Martinez
As I make my way around my neighborhood I can’t help but notice all the basketball hoops that piggyback people’s houses. The thing is I don’t see much play happening with these hoops. Sure the kids on the block use them but not very many adults or parents. Shooting hoops is a great form of getting in some physical fitness. It’s also a great way to spend some time with your kids outside and in the sunshine. It doesn’t have to be a rigorous fast-paced game. With just a little fun your heart rate gets into that cardio zone. It’s easily done by chasing after the ball when it bounces off the backboard with a few free shots. Virtually no special equipment is needed so it’s extremely affordable. You can pick up a portable basketball hoop for as little as $200.00 or go to any park in Modesto with a basketball hoop and play for free. Other than a hoop all you need are
some sneakers and a basketball. Friends one of the most important things to remember about setting up a basketball hoop outside of your home is to try and keep it in your driveway. The street sounds like a good idea but having to avoid cars or be on the lookout for them can be a drag. Please don’t forget to be considerate about not putting your basketball hoop on the sidewalk. For those who are disabled, it can be quite dangerous for them as they try to navigate around the basketball hoop base. Their only choice is to go on the street and sometimes no options are available for them to get around. They can actually fall off their wheelchair as it may clip either the basketball hoop base or fall face forward attempting to navigate from the sidewalk to the street. Let’s keep our sidewalks clear for all pedestrians. As far as basketball games go you can make your move outside with your kids for a friendly game of horse or even around the world. No matter what you do either with friends, family or by yourself you’re getting a good workout by simply shooting some hoops. Cheers to your health! Happy May, Modesto!
By Grace McNamera
May is here, and summer is arriving. I’ve been loving the sunny weather we’ve been having, and what better way to enjoy it than going outside! One of my favorite ways to stay active is going on a bike ride. I love going to dry creek and riding around there. This place has such a beautiful view. I love to take walks with my family or even go on a picnic with friends. Another great place to bike is the Virginia Trail. The trail is about 4 miles, and it’s a great activity to do with loved ones! Again, I highly recommend going outside and getting active. One of my all-time favorite places to go to is the Modesto Nuts Games. They’re finally back! I have so many memories from going to these games, and it’s nothing but
great fun. One of my favorite things about these Nuts games is the fireworks at the end of the game. Check out their website to see which games will be having them. Games in Modesto are located at the John Thurman Field. There are many different food concessions to choose from; they have excellent chicken strips! Also, don’t forget to take a picture with the Modesto Nuts mascots Al, Wally, and Shelley! With this hot weather we have, it is important to stay hydrated. One of my favorite summertime drinks is smoothies. My all-time favorite smoothie is strawberry. It is super fun to experiment with different fruits from your local grocery store or our local farmer’s market. One recipe I enjoy making includes: • One frozen banana. • 1/4 cup spinach. •Half a cup of strawberries. • Half a cup of almond milk. Of course, you can add your own fruit combinations to this and test it out! I hope you all have a beautiful May, and enjoy the sun!

ZEN VIEW Achieving Euphoria Mary Layton We are happy to announce that we are back teaching Tai Chi at the MJC! As you all know, most activities during the pandemic were stopped and it’s nice to see that things are moving again. However stress hasn’t gone away. We may feel, more than before, the need to take good care of ourselves so that we can better cope with the many stresses that we face in the world today. You may have such a practice set up in your life already. Any exercise and creative outlet will help us to feel more empowered. Keep in mind though that your body ideally likes to be included. So, for example, if music is your favorite thing then you could dance and move with it to get the ultimate benefit. Experiencing the totality of our humanity can give us a feeling of wholeness and belonging that heals even invisible wounds. Tai Chi offers the body/mind/spirit connection in one package. Learning Tai Chi starts with memorizing a
sequence of movements that have martial arts applications. These are shown sometimes in order to facilitate the memorization as well as help with mental focus and balance. In order to calm the mind and to improve memory, movements are repeated many times until they are absorbed mentally as well as physically. Tai Chi looks easy but it takes patience to learn. For the student that doesn’t give up there are many rewards and benefits. One can improve one’s physical strength and stamina as well as grow in confidence and increase one’s self awareness. Moving together with others at the same time, taking steps at the same time, shifting weight from one leg to the other at the same time, we may no longer feel isolated. All Tai Chi movements are circular, relaxing and beautiful. After a while one experiences a feeling of euphoria. After class everybody leaves with renewed energy, a sense of well-being and peacefulness. For more info go to taichi4modesto.com or call (209)572-4518
