EDITOR’S

Greetings Modesto Friends

CONTENTS

Chris Murphy and Don Maddox

Well October sure lived up to the name Rocktober this year. My wife and I thought we would just be chillin’ with Abbey off at college, Madison working in San Francisco, but no, October was rockin’ busy. First off, Halloween is a national holiday at our house so that was a lot of fun. Second, it was the MAMA Awards. This year was really something special. Modesto finally took its proper place as one of the roots of Rock ‘n Roll and the Birthplace of Rockabilly. K.C. “Don Juan” Maddox returned to Modesto for the first time in decades to be honored, along with his family, the Maddox Brothers and Rose for their role in the invention of Rockabilly at the 2013 MAMA Awards. It was truly amazing and heartwarming to see the applause and respect given to Don from our music community. He was treated like the true musical legend that he is and in return, he gave it his all and performed and played his fiddle for three nights in a row, showing every second what a true showman is. Amazing. I was honored to be his host and I am more fired up than ever to make sure that this history is celebrated and that we tell the world about who we are and welcome visitors from around the world to share our music and American Graffiti history. This is who we are and it is good. Civic pride comes from within and that is what we showcase every day and every month in ModestoView Magazine. It is easy to throw rocks or expect other people to be the ones to create change, but it is up to us to do it. Watching our musicians play with Don Maddox, or jam with Deke Dickerson or perform for Robert Ulrich on stage or see their artwork for sale or perform in their first play is inspiring. We have to create more opportunities for Modestans to shine. That’s why I am so very proud of the writers we have here at ModestoView. They are featured here because they celebrate and share what they love and do. That is why ModestoView is different and it loaded solid with total goodness each month. Please be our friend on Facebook.com/modestoview and you will be treated to the same goodness upon every visit to our site. Follow us on Twitter.com/modestoview and you will be up to date all day long with the positive events and happenings here in Modesto. We all are the change, we are all creative and we all make a difference. We welcome a special guest writer, former Modestan and GLEE casting director, Robert Ulrich to ModestoView this month as he brings his talent and time back to Modesto to give back to inspire the next generation. We can all do this. We can create events like ModShop that change the way we look at local artisans and show this can be a strong economy. Everyone can do it and by picking up this copy of ModestoView, you are doing it to and hopefully you will take away something new and good and spread the word. Thank you very much

MAMA

Chris Murphy, Don Maddox, Jeff Jardine Modesto made global music history on October 23. The Modesto area music industry gathered at the historic State Theatre to celebrate 19 MAMA Award winners and present an award to the legendary K.C. “Don Juan” Maddox. Don and his family, the Maddox Brothers and Rose, invented Rockabilly music back in the late 1930s and 1940s. The percussive slappin’ bass beat become the Rock of Rock ‘n Roll in the 50s. This was an amazing night complete with a video award presentation by country star Marty Stuart, a Rockabilly history video by Chris Murphy and Don Maddox stories by the Modesto Bee’s Jeff Jardine and a special Rockabilly proclamation by Modesto Mayor Garrad Marsh. Tony Trevino, Anthony Acevedo and Amie Alton put together a vintage Rockabilly combo so that Don Maddox could perform his legendary music. Don played his fiddle, cracked his signature jokes and enjoyed the evening of musical celebration and the Modesto area showed Don our gratitude and respect. The MAMAs are one of the most fun nights of the year as all of our genres of bands, musicians, radio stations and venue operators all gets together to celebrate our local music scene. There were epic performances by Breaking Chainz with Megan Robertson, Clockwork Hero, Christine McGrew, Darlin’ Clementine, Triple DDD, Stop Mo-

Thanks also to ModestoView and Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group for arranging Don and Barbara Maddox’s transportation from Oregon, the Doubletree Hotel for hosting the Don and Barbara. The State was brilliant with the MAMA Awards making this all happen. It was an epic and awesome night of Modesto music and celebration. The MAMA show will be ready for rebroadcast in November and thanks to all that voted and take the time to care about local music, go to shows and support our local live music scene.

Medical issues and relationship issues peppered a busy October but I am back in better shape and ready to really enjoy November with my family and friends. I’m really looking forward to my first Thanksgiving with my girlfriend Nicole and my daughters and then after that a beautiful Christmas before we all embark on our first New Year together. The one thing that I’m really looking forward to this month are concerts. I need to get out and see as much live music as possible. I suppose that the recent MAMA Awards sparked something within me. It is hard not to feel inspired when you are surrounded by so much talent. In regard to relationships, is anyone out there an expert? Nicole and I recently had a pretty nasty boulder put into our path and I was pretty sure that I had lost her. I did the guy thing and pretended not to care for a while and then I did the human thing and rolled up into a ball on my couch and cried like a big baby. You see, I have won and lost a million times and I figured that losing her would just be another thing that I’d have to deal with. I can tell you honestly that I had no idea how strong my feelings were for her. We have made up although we still have some work to do and I’m fine with that. I really love this woman and I plan to hold on to her like a cowboy on a bull in a rodeo. I could use a favor if you would be so kind – Get downtown and support the businesses that are trying to survive. The business landscape is changing around my home and it scares me a bit. There are a million empty storefronts down here and some businesses are only opening on a limited basis. Even Save Mart jumped ship and this does not bode well for a chubby guy addicted to Ben and Jerry’s and Snickers bars. Seriously, did you know that downtown had a boutique that specialized in metaphysical items? Intrinsic Elements on J St. is that shop and they sell everything from books to incense. They also have an amazing collection of candles, water features, jewelry and handmade items. They are at 1214 J St.

Words and Photos by Ruben Porras

Just down the block from them at 1208 J St. is Crow Trading Company. Thanks to Crow I have two coffee tables that always held conversations – One is a box that once help bomb parts during WWII and the other is a Chinese money box that is over 100 yearsold. Crow has antiques and new items and every trip there is an adventure and a test in will power for me. Do what you can to stay happy this month. For me, I’ll faithfully take all the medicine required to keep me alive and happy even if it makes me tired and groggy and I will hold onto Nicole like my life depends on it. They say that there is someone out there for everyone. I believe that I have found my match folks. I’ve been in love before

but nothing since my health problems has made me hurt like thinking that I lost Nicole did. It felt like I was being told that I had Cancer again or that one of my daughters was hurt. Eat some sushi, eat tacos from a truck, watch an indie film at the State and find a place to dance like nobody is watching. These are the things that make Modesto special to me. Enjoy your home. Enjoy Modesto, USA. The photos this month are just a few that I captured throughout the month that really stood out to me. Thank you to Efren Martinez for shooting the photo of Nicole and I at the MAMA Awards.

ART November Art Walk Here at the Queen Bean, Art View is thankful to have wifi and able to send in this month’s column late for deadline, and still cover what’s coming up for November. Sort of the way artists have a habit of last minute entries into shows and our own Stanislaus County Artist Open Studio Tour. By the time we come out with the December Modesto View, we will be past the December 1 deadline for any artist, any media, to enter the 2014 Artist Open Studio event. $25 entry fee, gets your studio, name, contact information on the official map, and invitation to the public to visit your work. You also have option to enter the Purchase Award competition where if selected you get paid for an art piece to be given away by raffle during the Open Studio. There will be a preview show at Gallo Center, and the event is April 12 and 13. So, if you are an artist, know an artist, get your application in before the next Modesto View comes out. On the official website, you can pay your fees by paypal, fill the form online, or use our contact info and email, to get a form mailed to you, or look for them at local Stanislaus County Gallery. In the previous three Open Studio weekends, the maps have featured artists in Modesto, Turlock, Oakdale, Riverbank, Hughson, Escalon, Manteca, Waterford, Ceres, and we’re hoping for expanded coverage in Patterson and Newman, where the Del Puerto Artists often featured the same weekend in Patterson Repertory Theater’s Art and Wine Gala. The November Third Thursday Downtown Modesto Art Walk is November 21, not to be confused with Thanksgiving the following week. You can plan your trip in advance from the website or get a printed map available at many of the shops and businesses downtown www.modestoartwalk.com I was at Crow Trading last month where we had a good crowd, many on their way to see the Khmer Youth of Modesto dance performance in the Cambodian Culture in America display last month. Various spots have music, or other performers and art that aren’t otherwise noted on the map. Third Thursday happens all year around. Good time to get your holiday shopping started. California Art Association will work with students from the Fremont Open Plan Elementary School in Modesto to acquire an overall understanding of the elements of visual art and their applications. Through examples, directed activities and reflection, students will learn the vocabulary and applications of the elements using a variety of media including pencil, charcoal, watercolor, pastel and papier-mache. Grant awarded was $4,350. This program is part of the C.L.A.S.S. program headquartered at Mistlin Gallery. Doing the Harvest Festival I had a student friend about nine ask me if my Jesters painting was “cubism.” I told her that may be close, as some call my work “abstract expressionism,” but that sort of conversation got me to ask her who her favorite artist is. “Picasso!” she said. So, I got to surprise her and her mom, that there are real Picasso works at the Carnegie Arts Center, and pretty sure they got to the show. This is what is fun writing this column, showing on Art Walk. You meet new artists.

BAR Tuesdays with Tresetti’s By Kate Serpa Photos by Philip Johnson

Tuesday is likely the most boring day of the week. Most of you will disagree, firmly stating, “What about Monday? Or Wednesday? Those days suck!”

But

you see, Reader, Mondays and Wednesdays still have a measure of motivation behind them. Mondays you have you drag yourself out of the Sunday wreckage of wine-bingeing whilst watching Game of Thrones, and put on a presentable face by 8 a.m. in attempt to successfully hide your hangover from your coworkers until 5 p.m. That takes motivation, skill, planning, eye drops, breath mints, moist towelettes …. So when Tuesday morning rolls around, it’s pretty difficult to muster Monday’s passion of actually giving a damn. Likewise, Wednesdays put you within a stone’s throw of Thursday, which equals visible approaching weekend time. So in short, Tuesdays are the --insert female dog synonym-- of the week. They are forgettable; they are lackluster. What’s a girl to do? Never fear, Reader, Tresetti’s World Caffe is serving out a beginning of the week boredom-breaker with its triple T -- Tresetti’s Tuesday Tastings.

8

For just ten dollars you receive three 4 oz. pours of whatever specialty liquor is being featured for the week along with three paired appetizers. This is an excellent event for you indecisive people I always end up behind in line for the bar that don’t know what to order; Tuesday Tastings make it look like you know what you’re doing. Better still, the event runs from 5 to 7 p.m., giving you plenty of time to get home, watch your stories, and get your eight hours (which, like most things, is always easier with a few cocktails in you). Featured boozy selections vary week to week; Smirnoff vodka has been recent favorite with its new Wild and Sorbet flavors. When Phil and I ventured over, a Fresno brewery, Tioga Sequoia, was the main event -- yielding happy gents pours from five brew selections coupled with a variety of finger foods. Think of the possibilities! Tresetti’s Tuesday Tastings provide an ideal after-work/

un-awkward first date/meet up with friends environment. You’re in the heart of downtown, right down the street from the Gallo Center, have access to Tresetti’s generously stocked wine shop and lovely patio, and are one waiter-request away from fantastic bar and fine dining fare. Tresetti’s Tuesday Tastings will continue to hold a place in my

weekly planner and heart until they transition to tequila tastings, in which case they might just be holding my hair. Tresetti’s World Caffe 927 11th Street, Modesto, CA 209.572.2990 www.facebook.com/tresettis-world-caffe

CHEF Rockin B’s Dana~licious Burger~licious!!! by Dana Johnson

FB: Dana’s Family Kitchen FOX40: See Chef Dana every 1st Friday of the month

Do any of you Modesto Viewers remember the line “Get in my belly!” from Austin Power’s “The Spy Who Shagged Me” movie in 2008? I’m not going to say the characters offensive name, but after my very first visit to Rockin B’s, I kinda knew what he was feeling once I bit into their incredibly juicy, but not greasy burger, “Get in my belly!” Without hesitation or any reason for exaggeration this burger was “supreme” even in comparison to so many of the Dana~licious burgers I’ve devoured before! I’d actually call myself a burger connoisseur and prominently qualified to highly recommend Rockin B’s for your next burger stop and really taste what I call Dana~licious. Shana and Barry Peterson opened Rockin B’s in May 2013. Both were born and raised right here in Modesto. They have been married for 14 years and have 2 kiddos. Shana previously worked 8 years for Modesto City Schools with special needs children, which I personally know takes dedication and heart. Barry worked the past 20 years as a lineman for Modesto Irrigation District (MID). Each have their own talents they bring to the restaurant, Shana created the Rockin B’s original “secret” sauce, while Barry created the company original BBQ sauce. The #1 selling burger is The Shay Shay Burger that boasts fresh avocado, pickled jalapeno, bacon, and choice of cheese! Barry starts at 5am to hand-make each patty. They also shared with me that every bite of the burger has been thought through so every bite is exactly the same, that’s Dana~licious style! Barry also holds claim that he founded the word “Shimmerville” in 1968 (Barry’s birth year) a noun of-

10

ten used in his MID years: Shimmerville is a delightful community in the state of yumminess located between perfection and unobtainable. Love it! Rockin B’s already has “regulars” as they call themselves. I call them addicted! I also believe it has something to do with the chopped bacon on the burgers instead of the often getaway strips, Anyway, if perhaps 1 day out of 6 you decide to lay off the burger and shimmer over to the wedge salad be sure to order it with the grilled

chicken breast, a side of garlic fries, and if you are 21 or older have 1of the 2 beers they have on tap. Maybe you need a meatless day, I won’t understand why, but the 3 cheese grilled cheese would be a great way to go. So as I was walking down the street after thoroughly enjoying a wonderful evening at the MAMA awards with my son, sharing the sidewalk was a thrilled young band that just won their first award! Congrats I said, they asked me if I was there with a band, oh

I wish! I told them I write the Chef View article for the Modesto View Magazine, they said that was totally cool. I asked the band if they wanted to know what I thought was the best place to get a juicy burger in Modesto, before I could answer they all yelled out Rockin B’s on McHenry! We all high-fived in unison! Special note, Rockin B’s will make any burger combination with any items on the menu. They make lettuce wrapped burgers known as protein style, too. But for me, I had them make mine with a perfect egg over medium to pass through my lips! Modesto View signature question: Beatles or Stones? Barry immediately says Stones for Shizzle Brown-eyed Girl, like no duh and rushed back to his grill. When I asked Shana she said “wow those are both before me”. I stared at her with a questioning smirk, then she said I like both, I think. She was like an adorable game show contestant, as I told her Barry and I both said Stones, she was like, then Stones for me, too! It was one of those you had to be there to truly appreciate the enthusiastic comedy! In my head I kept saying Thank you Shana for playing The Dana Is Always Right Show! See you soon at Rockin B’s (Shimmerville) my fellow Modesto Viewers who can’t resist my food tempting words that bring you the best tastes of Modesto. Rockin B’s Burger Company 222 Mc Henry Ave. Modesto, CA 95354 209-524-7656 Hours: 11am to 7pm M-Sat. closed Sundays

STAR

By Robert Ulrich

I

was born and raised in Modesto, and have always felt a great connection with the town. I lived in New York City for many years, and I have now lived in Los Angeles for many more. But, I have never forgotten my roots. Throughout the years, my family and I have spent a great deal of time in Modesto, enjoying the restaurants, shopping and the theater productions. And of course, enjoying family and friends. As a Casting Director for television, I was able to fulfill my lifelong dream of being in the entertainment industry. My wife, Kim, a professional actress, and I have both been huge advocates for the arts. We’ve always been so impressed with the talent in Modesto, and have made it a point, even when we lived in New York, to attend productions in the Central Valley. I’ve produced many shows in Modesto, but I thought how wonderful it would be to feature some of Modesto’s most spectacular talents and incorporate professional actors as well. What better place to do a concert than the beautiful Gallo Center for the Arts. The state-of-the-art facility is amaz-

ing—I wish it had been around when I was young; I would have died to perform in it as a youth. So, join us one night only for an unforgettable performance as Hollywood comes to the San Joaquin Valley! This thrilling show is an evening of music and comedy starring Blake Jenner, Melissa Benoist and Alex Newell of “Glee”. Blake is the Teen

Choice Award winner for Breakout TV Star of 2013 - and Melissa, soon appearing in two feature films (one opposite Al Pacino and one opposite Miles Teller), will be joined by Lindsay Pearce, past winner of Modesto’s prestigious talent competition Valley’s Got Talent as well as the other Valley’s Got Talent winners for the past three years. is all about creating civic pride and encouraging our citizens to get involved and make a difference. I am also very proud to be a Rotarian. My friend Royal Robbins asked me to join Rotary nearly 15 years ago. I met Kathy Halsey serving on the Modesto Chamber of Commerce Technology Committee when we were pushing for DSL expansion to Modesto. Kathy has always been focused on working with the public and being involved in Modesto and Turlock. Kathy went to work at Pacific Telephone in 1978, back in the days when you had to lease a phone and a special color cost extra. She ultimately grew with AT&T and became Director of Public Affairs until she “retired” a few years ago. Kathy and her husband Dave have been together for nearly 30 years, married in 1978. They have two kids, Karly and Dustin, that attend Pitman High. Now she is busier than ever serving with a variety of local organizations. ModestoView: You were in the corporate world and now you are busier than ever. How has life changed for you since you “retired”? Kathy Halsey: First year was very mellow and I took a year off. I was doing so much volunteer work, my husband suggested I get serious and get a job that included service. I had job opportunities and turned down some fabulous offers. I took a job with the Great Valley Center as Sr. Director American Leadership Forum, Great Valley Chapter, In fact, I’m leaving tomorrow to attend the national board meeting North Carolina. I also continue to work as a consultant for AT&T.

Kathy Halsey - Rotarian by Chris Murphy MV: You have always been part of the community and a volunteer, what drives you to be involved? KH: First time I got involved when I was 10 or 11. I put on carnivals for the local neighborhood kids. When I was in 3rd grade I did a fundraiser for Muscular Dystrophy. My first carnival made $10.01 and mailed it to the national office. I have been fortunate to have jobs at AT&T that allowed me to be involved. I always wanted to represent the company with the public. MV: Rotary International is an amazing organization. Do you think community knows what they need to know about Rotary? KH: No I don’t. There is a lot of good work in the community. There are a lot of people that do things behind the scenes. At Rotary, we don’t spend time telling people what we do but we probably should. We need to do more to educate the community about what we do and encourage people to be involved. At Rotary, it is “service above self ”. We are involved in the Kettle Kick Off, we have the Rotary sock collection for the Salvation Army and we were instrumental, along with the other rotary clubs on the Virginia Corridor, Toys for Underserved Children and other special things coming up. We have just delivered dictionaries to third graders citywide and are beginning work on the Virginia White trail. MV: What makes you the most proud to be a Rotarian? KH: The work that Rotarians do, not matter how small or large the project. From the local level, whether it is wheelchairs, water

treatment, building trails or on the global scale with eradicating polio. The 2013 Rotary motto is “Engage Rotary Change Lives” MV: How do people get involved with Rotary? KH: Anyone can be a party of Rotary. We encourage all Rotarians to ask others in the community to be involved. If you don’t know a Rotarian, you call the Modesto Rotary office at 209-578-9999 and we will make a connection to bring you into this amazing organizations. MV: What do you think the people of Modesto could do to really make a difference? KH: Mentoring kids is a priority. There are so many kids that don’t have a good role model in their lives. There are numerous ways to do this . You really can change the future by working with kids and providing positive direction. I have a picture that that hangs in my house that reads, “The world may be little better since I was important in the life of a child. MV: You wear many hats, tell us some of your other hats. KH: I am active in the Modesto Chamber of Commerce and am the past Chairman. I also serve on the United Way Women’s

Leadership Council. I also sit on Turlock Chamber of Commerce Government Relations Committee and serve on Congressman Denham’s Academy Selection committee. There are so many very worthwhile projects. MV: We talked about the importance of the Salvation army and the Modesto Rotary has a Kettle Kick off team for the big event on November 21. How can people contribute and why do you think the Salvation Army is so important. KH: Look at all the things that Salvation Army does. Take care of those that can ‘t take care of themselves. They feed and clothe the needy and provide much needed services. When you donate to the Salvation Army you are “Not just giving a handout, but a hand up”. The best thing you can do to assist the needy and the homeless is

to give to organizations that help like the Salvation Army. MV: You and your husband Dave like to explore our country, where do you like to go and how do you travel? KH: Our passion is motorcycling and we only own Harleys. We used to travel a lot before we had kids and now we are really busy. We are looking forward to getting back on the road again. There is much country here in California left to see and also the across the USA. My mom was an adventurer and I want to follow in her footsteps. I really think we need to teach our kids to be adventurers and to be curious about the world around them. MV: Tell us something that people may not know about you. KH: We love going to the fair so much and even have a 100 year pass that we bought when the Stanislaus County Fair celebrated the hundred year anniversary. MV: Beatles or Stones. KH: Oh that isn’t fair that I have to pick. I have seen the Rolling Stones 5 times but I listen to Beatles all the time and know all the songs. This is a tough one. I can’t pick.

You can make nominations for the list of endangered buildings, structures, and landscapes being compiled by Modesto Heritage, the local preservation group. What buildings in Modesto do you want to see maintained, restored, preserved, and/ or reused and that give Modesto its unique identity: the McHenry/Brewster or Cressey mansions? What about the Modesto Arch, the old oaks along Dry Creek, the Lion Bridge, the former Elk’s Lodge on I Street, the Beaty Building, or the former World Savings Bank at 10th and I? Perhaps there is a building or structure in your neighborhood that could be on the list. Be an advocate for the special places in our community that deserve attention and preservation. When making your nominations, keep the following in mind, though not all points are necessary to make a building, landscape, or structure eligible: 1. The building, structure, or landscape should be important to the community because of its history or design 2. For more than a year, the building has been either under used, vacant, or abandoned 3. Vandals have attacked the building, structure, or landscape breaking windows, spraying graffiti, or causing other damage 4. Needed repairs and maintenance are not being done An endangered building list is important because too often the community is called upon to rally support for a building about to be torn down, when the development plans are already approved, or when it is really too late to do anything about it. A list helps the community identify buildings at risk while there still may be time to save them. The list is important because it also raises consciousness about the architecture and landscape treasures Modesto has and how they contribute to the economic well being of the entire community. Send your nominations to the Modesto Art Museum, modestoartmuseum@yahoo. com . The Modesto Heritage Committee will review the nominations and post them in the December issue of ModestoView and on the museum web site.

things that are made by hand. Handmade clothes, art, food, are all so special. My wife tells me that there is something special about people that repair, fix and create things by hand, and as an artist, she should know as she is so special. There is something magical and unique about hand made things. Each is slightly different, special and one of a kind. The Modesto area has so much talent when it comes to creating. Music, art, and food are some of the most popular, but there is a whole other world of daily functional things that should be a primary part of our community fabric. Pun intended. Nearly a decade ago, there was event called Handborn that brought our local crafts people together. AUTHOR “The Mud Bowl”

by Ken White

Photos by Vanston Shaw & Robert Merritt They were old enough to know better. These over-60 victims of fate. But that didn’t stop them. From playing a game in the rain. Like they had each year for the past 50 years. It started on a Thanksgiving morning at Roosevelt and Pike Park. Then moved to Thousand Oaks, now Kewin, Park. A group of Baby Boomers gathered to play “The Mud Bowl.” It was a morning of glory in a rushing stream of unremarkable days. Adolescence run wild in lives of quiet desperation. And a way to avoid putting away those young boy ways. For just one day. It started out as a game. Then it became an excuse. For these “boys of autumn” to never grow up. They’d been told for years by their parents, wives, girlfriends, and sibs to act their age. But, did they listen? No way. They just drank more, smoked more, swore more, played harder, and did more stupid things. What would you expect from a bunch of guys with nicknames like Dancing Bear, Whitey, Putz, Goat, Bo’re, Fast Johnny, Pancho, Hands, T Honey, and Pig. In the beginning, it was about coming home from college during Thanksgiving break to catch up. They picked sides. Argued over rules. Played some touch that quickly turned into tackle. No plays. Everyone just went long. Then stayed up all night, after eating way too much turkey, to drink, play a little poker, and razz one another about how it was going with grades, girls, and life. Then, it was about introducing wives and significant others and sharing pictures of new children, homes, cars, and jobs. They divided teams into “Class of ‘66” versus “The Other

18

Guys.” And canonized the gathering with T-shirts, a banquet the night before, a memorable (or was it memorial?) highlight video, trophies, and team photos. Real plays were sketched out on note cards. Tackle turned into flag football so nobody got hurt. Although a few did. Teeth, ankles, knees. And the local TV stations came out because it was better than covering soup kitchens. Then bird, cocktails, and cards. The same old routines and sarcastic digs as the years piled on. And now, it’s about memories. They make catch-up phone calls and send emails from homes scattered across the West. Look at the photos and watch the videos alone and together. Remember those who are gone. And recall what each of them had done and not done and still hoped to do. A little less turkey, a lot less alcohol, and no poker. They have passed the torch – AKA the “Cheap Shot Chicken” – to the next generation. And the generation after that. To carry on. As long as there are two players still standing, there will always be a game. The Mud Bowl was, and always will be, about old friends. And like Thanksgiving, it’s about family and tradition. And boys playing a game in the mud. To see the greatest hits of The Mud Bowl through the years, go to http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1DC1D27DE02B3FAD. In Memoriam: Kevin Clark, George Rogers, Don de Camp. All the Mud Bowl buddies Gather ‘round tonight Yesterday’s alive and kicking One more year So we talk about some old times And drink ourselves some beers Still crazy after all these years Still crazy after all these years

ZEN This is a special message from Jeff Pishney – Love Modesto & Love our Schools

Schools in our are are facing a very high student to teacher ratio and many students need positive relationships, role models and academic assistance. Our schools are requesting help to meet this incredible challenge. Can you donate at least 1 hour per week to be a classroom helper or mentor? When you volunteer, teachers and students will feel more supported, test scores will improve and your life will be positively impacted for the good! Here are other ways you can support our schools. 1. Donate “in demand” items for classrooms such as: copy paper, tissue, antibacterial wipes and dry-erase markers 2. Leave an encouraging card/note for a teacher, principal or staff member 3. Volunteer to be a crosswalk helper on busy streets where there are no student cross guards, help get kids to school safely 4. Get a TB test and volunteer at the school either as a classroom helper or mentor 5. Start a neighborhood fundraiser and give the proceeds to the nearest school 6. Gather volunteers on a weekend to clean up the parking lot, surrounding school grounds, adjacent park to help beautify the school 7. Read a book to a group of Kindergarteners or Pre-school children 8. Challenge your children, co-workers or neighbors to save coins for kids: turn in your coins at the end of the month to a school - see how your spare “change” can make a “change” 9. Volunteer to grade papers for a teacher 10. Donate gently used or new children’s books to a school library

Timing by Mary Layton Oh, there’s such pleasure in perfect timing. To say, do, show up or stay away, create something or get rid of something just at the right time! Really feels good when it happens. Perfect timing is magical. For example, a teacher saying something to a student just at the right time, when the student can hear it, get it, can really do something with the information. As opposed to saying it at the wrong time, when the student is not ready and ends up frustrated. Of course, this is true for all human interactions. Good timing in business is crucial. When to market a product, strike a business deal, or make an important move. Right time, right words, right contact. In the martial arts timing is essential. Before the punch or push is delivered it is already blocked by the opponent with little effort, taking the incoming energy and turning it into

his advantage. Right time, right contact, right place, right angle. You need a quiet, relaxed and open mind to achieve perfect timing. It is a journey that requires lots of practice and willingness to wait for the right moment. Once you stop just “doing things” you are on the way to discover the right timing. taichi4modesto.com or call (209) 572-4518

NON-PROFIT The State Faces a Challenge by Ruben J. Porras Independent films are all the rage in Hollywood these days as well-known actors and directors avoid the major studio system to produce what they feel are films that give them more creative control. The key to keeping these films being made is presenting and supporting them and that is where art house theatres such as Modesto’s State Theatre come into play. Many people are unaware that the State is the only art house theatre between Sacramento and Southern California. That means that certain films that are released would never be shown in this area if the State didn’t make them available to fans. This is not always an easy task for the State with constant negotiations with film distributors, planning and maintaining the theatre. Even with all that has to be done, the State’s role in presenting independent films is about to get even more challenging. By January 1, 2014, the State must raise a total of $200,000 to maintain its ability to show films. The reason for this is that the film industry is moving to an all-digital format and all theatres must follow this format in order to present films because that is the only way that films will be made available for presentation. To date the State has raised over $85,000 toward the cost of retrofitting the theatre to new film industry standards but there is a long way to go and a very short amount of time to get to the goal. You can help by donating any amount that you can afford. One-time and monthly contributions are welcomed. Visit thestate.org/digital for more information. Movies such as The Blair Witch Project, Big Fat Greek Wedding, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, American Psycho, Pulp Fiction and American History X all started as independent films and went on to become

BLUES & JAZZ

What’s new with Jazz and the Blues news by Eric Benson

Well out with the Jack o’lanterns and in with the turkeys then on to the presents, presents, presents! My how the time flies when you’re trying to get through the week alive! With the change in weather getting dark earlier and colder there are those of us ready for the fall hibernation, but not me. The downtown with music, restaurants and the Art Walk scene continued unabated year round and beckons me on. This time of year it takes on a quieter calm nature & I might sip a warm steamy beverage in a nice cozy venue. The State Theatre, home of the MAMA awards continues with some community friendly booking. Nov 2nd Dia De Los Muertos Music and Art Festival, Science on the screen: Another Earth Nov 10th, and Elvin Bishop Friday Nov 22nd, and for the kiddies: a visit from Santa with screening of the Polar Express on Dec1st. Elvin had the hit “fooled around and fell in Love” in the 70’s but still is smoking and puts on a Blues show not to be missed. The Gallo continues to amaze me with their booking: Yellowjackets, Three Dog Night, Blues Traveler, Straight no Chaser, wow! For November: 2nd Craig Morgan, (Country music), 3rd Laurie Berkner, queen of kids music, 6th Marizo, Portuguese Fado singer, (Fado is a minor folk bases idiom like the Blues), 15th Million Dollar Quartet Broadway musical documenting the meeting of Elvis, Jerry Lee, Johnny Cash, & Perkins, 22nd Abba Mania. My pick for the month if you like cult lounge, pop & Latin Jazz flavorings is the group Pink Martini comes through Dec. 3rd. And of the new venues on the scene is Rivets restaurant and bar. Some of the seasoned acts that play at Boardroom, Johnny & Kelly, Tim Allen, Joe Barretta are playing there weekend nights. The food & drink is good moderately priced but there is no cover charge. Another place for a quiet listen to music in ambient environment is DEWZ Restaurant’s Wine Bar. The Saturday night music is from 7:30 to 10:00 or so and features solo and small groups of musicians playing at acoustic volumes in the informal environment with folks enjoys wine tast-

Josh Rosenblum ing and a little noshing bites. I’m doing the booking bringing in Jazz & popular music with vocalists. In November we have: 2th: Francesca Bavaro, 9th John King & Robin Montgomery Jazz guitar duo, 16th: Pat Durr of Home grown guitar, vocals, 23rd Francesca Bavaro, and Tim Allen piano & vocals with the best of Elton, Billy Joel and other. I tend to book older seasoned artists but 2 young bloods I am excited about are Josh Rosenblum and Francesca Bavaro. You will see them regularly at DEWZ, Barkin’ Dog and other venues. The new invigorated Hero’s sports Bar is booking rock, punk and some world shows. The after party of the MAMA’s with Don Maddox surviving member of Maddox Family Rockabilly band turned it out with fiddling to remember. For November

so far: 7th Roddy Radiation, Skabilly Rebels, 15th the Moms, of us Giants. On the west side: West Side Theatre brings in some Blues and roots music with some tributes that do justice. On Nov 9th Johnny Cash with James Garner, and 23rd with the Refugees. A little drive but well worth it once you get there with a wonderful vintage theatre converted into music & arts venue. On the kickin out the jams side: Barkin’ Dog Thursdays with Dave Dow, (Jazz), Queen Bean Sundays hosts jam with acoustic, rock music. Need to get, give me some input at: mbenson@fire2wire.com, or cell 209-918-7033. Peace out, Eric Benson

ACOUSTIC

Of Caged Birds and Ladybugs

by Aaron Rowan

My listening life changed the day I played Brett Detar’s solo debut three years ago. I’d been enjoying his music for a decade before that, when he was lead man of popular indie band The Juliana Theory. When I learned of this solo effort I jumped to have a listen. But after years of naught but classic rock, and indie rock, and hard rock, I was unprepared for the rich banjo and steel guitar sounds I was hearing. It took numerous listens for this rootsy sound to even become tolerable, let alone grow on me. Fortunately, I stuck with it until I was completely acclimated, and I’ve never been the same. There is a quality of beauty in the acoustic realm one just does not find elsewhere. It’s always a special honor for me to get to work with Brett, and this month will be my third such honor. He’s got a phenomenal new record out and is touring the nation with songwriter Joseph West. They’ll be making a stop at Barkin’ Dog Grill on Wednesday 11/13. Local Americana rockers The Dustbowl Children perform as well. 7:30 PM, $10 cover for this evening of country tunes. The deep love I developed for acoustic music leads me to many cool places and people, but one of my favorites to listen to and work with is our very own country-rock ambassador Patty Castillo Davis. You may have enjoyed her at any number of local shows over the past couple years, but she’s got a musical history going back decades. Patty’s inspiration to sing was stirred the day she saw Nancy Sinatra perform ’These Boots Are Made For Walking’ on TV. She recorded her first single onto vinyl at the tender age of 4, a cover of ‘Leavin’ On A Jet Plane,’ harmonizing alongside her mother. She continued to pursue music in her early years, often singing with her church choir, before a break during high school. After graduation she began entering (and winning) competitions at different bars,

singing with their house bands. Upon becoming a mother, though, it was time for another hiatus. During that time Patty carried the monopoly on local car dealership jingles and did voiceovers such as for an Emmy-winning news special on the 1992 pipeline explosions in Guadalajara. She remained heavily involved in her church, where she has served as cantor since 1981. This eventually resulted in her traveling with her choir to Vatican City in early 2005, where she sang a solo for Pope John Paul II at St. Peter’s Basilica. The acoustics in the Vatican are pretty badass, according to Patty. Closer to home, she has opened for national acts such as Jimmie Vaughn, Frank Hannon of Tesla, and the Ronstadt Generations trio. She was nominated for her first MAMA the first year she returned to performing after her most recent hiatus, and has garnered a total of 11 nominations including one win for her part in Americana band Marirose & The Gypsies. And then, in early October of this year, Patty began on a path likely to lead her to new heights, with her journey to the Durango Songwriters’ Expo. TO BE CONTINUED…

FIT Fun In The Run by Efren Martinez On October 1st I was invited to speak at a School Assembly to promote running, the school jog-a-thon and a healthy lifestyle but had to readjust my program on the spot. You see, at the beginning of the school day, the kids were given a photo of me when I weighed in at 330lbs along with a mission statement introducing myself. The teachers informed the kids that morning that this was who their guest speaker was to be at the Jog-A-Thon Pep Rally Assembly. At the start of the assembly I remained hidden from the kids and when it started I was introduced. As you might figure, the kids were very much surprised when I ran up on stage a lot thinner than in the photo that they had seen of me earlier that morning. Just as soon as I jumped up on the stage and let the kids know that I am/was the same guy in the photo I instantly got this feeling that they weren’t buying it. I admit; I

wasn’t really ready for that and/or the kid’s unbelievable reaction. After all, here I was standing in front of them at 140lbs compared to the fellow they were expecting to see. ModestoView friends, I’ve done plenty of motivational speaking to adults on fitness, addictions and weight loss and it has always been mostly at churches or drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers. This was different, these were kids and the concept of losing so much weight and how unhealthy I was wasn’t something they could appreciate just yet. I quickly changed my approach from the science of running and living a healthy lifestyle to keeping the fun in the run. Good thing, as I got into my silly antics and entertaining, I realized that these kids could care less about how large I was nor could give a hoot on just how many races I’ve won. In the end, we all had a silly good

time and I encouraged the kids to participate in their upcoming Jog-A-Thon. Ok, so here’s the skinny, sure it’s great to win races and who doesn’t want to have that perfect body, but what I learned from those kids that day is that it isn’t nearly as important to win a race as it is to keep your fitness fun. We should all look forward to exercise as a kid looks forward to recess or PE. Friends, I invite you to embrace this very concept with your kids in keeping the fun in your fitness. If you have a child that is getting ready for a school Jog-A-Thon, encourage them to participate, encourage them to get off the video games and play more. This is also sound advice for moms and dads. Chances are you have a basketball, football or bicycle somewhere in your garage. Dust it off, grab your kid’s, lace up your running shoes and get your family play on. Leading by a positive fitness and

nutrition example is a great way to combat family/child obesity. Doing so will help your family grow stronger, healthier and who knows, at the end of it all you just might end up a lot thinner than if you were sticking to being one of those armed chaired athletes.

ALL AGES

BLUES by Leia Johnson

Happy Fall! This is one of my favorite times of year, especially watching the leaves change color. It reminds me of many special things this month Brown: Brownie Girl Scouts is when I started Girl Scouts, but it’s never too late to join! In Girl Scouts, not only do you make new friends, you also do lots of projects to help your community and to learn new things! We also have a performance where we have fun and show off our moves, called Puttin on The Hits. We go to Camp Groovy for a fun filled weekend with crafts, singing, dancing, and games up near Pinecrest! Girl Scouts is a great way to make new friends and to give back to the community! Red: Speaking of giving back to the community, Thanksgiving is coming up! Make

sure to give back by donating to the Salvation Army!! This time of year you will hear the bells and see the red kettles. It doesn’t matter how much you give, a little bit always counts! Orange: The turkey trot is coming up and Its always a tradition for me to go with my family on Thanksgiving morning! The turkey trot is a 5k run in a super pretty area on the Tuolumne River! Before the actual run there is a mini race for younger kids. Go with your friends, your family, your neighbors, or anyone! Congrats to Breaking Chainz! They are a band of teenagers who won the MAMA award for best youth band. Modesto had a ton of great youth bands. You can see them at places like Queen Bean, Barking Dog and Hero’s to name a few. Make sure you get to a show this month and support our local talent. They are one of the many things we have to be thankful for in Modesto!

Cooler Nights by ‘Big’ Earl Matthews

Hello everybody, November means cooler nights and my favorite holiday of the year Thanksgiving. November also marks since years since I moved back to my hometown of Modesto. It’s been long enough now that it have a hard time imagining living anywhere else, even though I did just that for almost 10 years. I am happy to be here and happy for all the great people I call my friends and family, musical and otherwise. My big news for November is that I am leaving, no I’m not moving away. I am go-

ing on tour, an admittedly short tour but, its the first one I have ever gone on so it’s huge to me. We, Ryan Russell and Poorhouse Millionaires are going to Arizona, to the Phoenix area more specifically to the home of The Hashknife Outfit and the Red Chair Recordings (Look both up on youtube). We will be playing a show with Hashknife and a few other bands while we are down there and I can’t wait to tell you all about it when I get back. We are only going to be gone for about 5 days so let me get back to the business of what’s going on here in November that you might enjoy. On November 2nd My Friends and I are throwing another party at the Prospect. The last one was a blast so if you missed that one make sure you don’t make the same mistake twice. On Nov 14th I am happy to present a great night of music at Deva Cafe featuring The Slaughter Daughters from Bend, OR, The Smokestack Relics from Boulder, CO and Good Neighbor also from Boulder, CO - All very Talented folks and well worth coming out on a Thursday to see. Good Neighbor and Smokestack Relics will also be at the Cow Track Saturday Nov 16th with another group TBA. The next show I want to tell you about is in Merced at the Partisan, This is easily one of the best bar/venues in the valley. They have played host to many great acts over the years. On Nov 22nd they will welcome Larry and His Flask. If you have seen them before then I would imagine you already have this date circled on your calendar. If you have not, take a moment and do that now. These guys put on a show that is second to none - great songs, great voices, excellent musicianship and enough energy to power Merced for a full day if the lights went out. They bring a mix of newgrass and punk that has to be seen to be fully understood. Well thats all for me this month. As for all of you, as this year winds down remember to be the kind of friend you want to have and go see some live music.

Go Downtown Modesto Uncle Lonny Presents: Mumbo Gumbo in Concert, with Tommy and the Edsels Friday, November 15th 7:00 PM The State Theater, $35/$30 available online at thestate.org Mumbo Gumbo blends many genres, from rock to sour, afropop to lush balladry, zydeco to country, into a celebratory danceable noise. Over nearly 20 years, on the septet’s eight albums and during countless gigs around their native Northern California, Mumbo Gumbo has created something that is less a specific style than a particular feeling: The sound of sheer joy. This Uncle Lonny Presents Concert is a benefit for Haiti’s children, through two projects: Be The Power of One, providing new wells and clean water, and The Global Orphan Project, caring for orphaned and abandoned children in Haiti
