I am thankful. I am thankful for my family and friends. I am thankful for creative and curious people. I am thankful for the energy of people that have ideas, who take action, think about the future, think about other people, get things done and love their community. This energy is special and there is a feeling that when we all work together, we can truly change the way things are into what we want it to be. We are craving our history, our authenticity and we want to capture those times where the good memories come from and we want to bring them back where we can. We love our modern life that is all connected by satellites in space but we want the simple things that bring us back to earth. This issue of ModestoView is dedicated to the creative and crafty people that feed us with the energy we need to connect with each other. Things made by hand are special, songs created from the heart are amazing, and the people that make and fix things are the true caretakers of our fast-paced modern society. Hand-made books, shoes, tables, appliances and other things bring a new connection to keep us local. I constantly look for ways to keep every dollar local, every gift I give comes from our community and we need to spread the word to people that we all know and do the same. Modesto gets better from the inside out and ModShop will be a showcase of location craftiness on November 29. Our downtown is starting to light up again. We have new restaurants opening, we have more places playing live music and that means that people are out walking and connecting again. But this is just the spark, we need to light it up. Our goal is to revitalize 10th St, 11th St, J St and hope this is the core that will energize the rest of downtown. We need you. If you are reading this, and you have not been downtown, consider this a personal invitation. Come see our new creative space where we will have a new office downtown in the old Camera Center. You will see Tony the Barber, Project Yes Youth employment, Stanislaus Magazine, Good Neighbor Shine and more. Well folks, I have gotten myself into quite an interesting situation. Last night my family and I celebrated the 14th birthday of my youngest daughter. She has always been my baby. The youngest always is, right? Well, that is about to change in a way as soon as this April. I don’t mean that Gracie will get demoted to non-baby status. What I mean is that we are adding a new addition to our little clan of wild-eyed adventurers. Yep. It’s real. We are having a baby! Nicole and I are very excited about this situation. This will be Nicole’s first, and the baby will be born with Gracie and my oldest daughter looking out for her. So, let’s do some mathWhat do you get when you add a crazed 39 year-old goof ball to a beautiful woman that makes him incredibly happy and then add a new baby to the mix? The answer is pretty simple actually - The result is an even crazier 39 year-old with children ages 18, 14 and zero. Wow! Luckily I am up to the challenge. I’ve learned that I’m about the right age at this point in my life to have a new kiddo. I’m more patient and happy than I ever was and unlike my past relationships, this one is built on unconditional love. Together we have random unexpected hospital visits, we argue, we laugh, we cry and we worry. But at the end of every day we fall asleep like two pretzels that even the jaws of life would have trouble pulling apart. October has been a challenge, but I faced it with Nicole and we made it work. I had to return to UCSF for a procedure that could have yielded terrible health news but things ended up vey positive. I walked out without the help of a walker or wheelchair. I was scared to death to ever return there. I was positive I’d never go home. So, health is ok at this point. I have another procedure scheduled in San Francisco in November, and I’m mentally ready for it. It will be fine.

I hope that everyone had a safe and exciting Halloween. Now as happens every year, life will be put on fast forward as we rush into the holidays. Do yourselves a favor this year. Shop local. Avoid camping at Wal-Mart to score a cheap TV that is exactly that - a cheap TV. Don’t fist-fight older people for coffee makers and toasters. Don’t bury yourself in materialism to the point that joy gets lost. Local shops are awesome. Give them a shot. In the next few months I will write about my new journey. I will explain my fear of dirty diapers and throwup and I will also explain why I somehow look forward to

those things. I’m going to be a fun dad with a sense of hope and compassion that will hopefully rub off on our little prince or princess. Enjoy November. Eat too much. Laugh too hard. Watch the Raiders get beat constantly. Do what we do as Americans, but don’t forget to spread your good fortune around a bit also. Follow ModestoView on Facebook and look for posts about food banks and other programs that need your help. Nobody should be hungry this time of year. That’s just not right. Follow me at Facebook.com/rporraswriter and at Twitter as @writerlifeco. I’ll make you laugh and show you pretty pictures of ugly things.

ART

Road Trip by Jim Christiansen

Hellen Million at Crow Trading, Jim Christiansen Pen and Ink, Dr Blue Music at Chartreuse Muse, Michael J Mangano at the Barkin’ Dog

Sometimes you need a road trip. Gives Nine days of Boston led to a short trip to Eva Haas oddities at Crow TradSanta Cruz for a preview of their Open Studio weekends, followed by a day trip to Yosemite and Watts Winery in Lodi with old friends, to fully fill out the inspiration needed to appreciate my 60th birthday and get me back to do art here at home. Here’s what’s coming up for November. Crossroads Country Quilters and Central California Art Association host a Fiber Show at Mistlin Gallery this month. www. crossroadscountryquilters.com Mistlin will also hold a NUNO felting class, November 8, making art to wear. Pick up a Celebrate Modesto Environmental Division calendar there. The Calendar features art and photos Modesto View’s Chris Murphy, Ruben Porras, and Becky Murphy. Other artists featured, Jack McBride, Anna Barber, Barbara Gill, Virginia White, Suzanne Staud, Linda Knoll, Brian Swander, Eric Luebke, and Adrian Mendoza. Chella will be featured next month in a solo show at Trewin Framery out on Pentecost Road off Kiernan. An Artist’s reception for the show will be held December 8, 5:30 to 8:30. Chella was also the first of the 40 artists already signed up for 2015 Artists Open Studio. If you’re interested in being on the map, artist application deadline is January 15. Last month’s pick for Art Walk, Preservation Coffee, where I can’t help but notice the “sold” signs on Art shown there. Barkin Dog featured Modesto View’s Michael J. Magano on the big display boards all month. Helen Million had art up as well at BDG, and the Skeletal Flamingo’s by

you new ideas, see new things, get out of the rut. My last column just finished before hopping a plane to Boston. I’d never been there before. I lucked into Arts week in Boston. Logged 8 hours at the Museum of Fine Art, looking at exhibits from the ancients, to antique musical instruments, World War I poster art, the Impressionists, acres of gallery on three levels. I recommend the side trip by Ferry over to Provincetown on Cape Cod, historic and current artist enclave. Quite a few comedy clubs in the Boston area. My Open Mic tee shirt went over well. MAMA award winner Tara Tinsley also in Boston on similar paths. A place full of history, you get a look at both the old and the new. I got to see Paul Revere’s house and the USS Constitution, and even day trip on Amtrak to Portland, Maine. Best day for me, Downtown for the Annual Berklee Beantown Jazz Festival, three stages, international jazz acts, four long blocks of vendors and musicians, in six hours of FREE fun. Same day, I took the metro to Harvard Square and ran into the FREE New England Americana festival playing Rockabilly and acoustic blues, on toward midnight. Saw a lot of street artists there, and met some artists from the Out of the Blue Gallery, a block from my brother’s house with invitation to see their new gallery. Their space is a 6000 sq ft with gallery, performance art and music performing space, resident artist spots, similar to the full area downstairs at Center Stage in Modesto. This kind of spot would be great in the proposed Modesto Arts Block.

BAR

Trotting Towards Health: Greens on Tenth By Kate Serpa Photos by Philip Johnson

I have a healthy family. They enjoy running; I enjoy sandwiches. Their idea of a fun vacation involves outdoorsy hikes; I would rather sleep in. They say, “Egg white omelet?” Negative -- I vote mimosas and bacon. When I think ‘running, outdoors, and breakfast’ all in the same go, the first thing that comes to mind is the annual November Turkey Trot, which my family participates in every year. The Turkey Trot, for those of you not in the know, is an outdoor run of some too-long indiscriminate length that happens in the morning, on Thanksgiving, that I have yet to participate in because that’s a whole cornucopia of ‘no’ on my end. I applaud you health types, I just know myself well enough to realize I can’t do it. Or, can I? You see Phil is one of those healthy types, too. He rides his bike voluntarily, he goes out during daylight hours, and he’s always talking about Greens on Tenth. “They have beautiful, organic, local foods,” he said. “Do they have a bar?” I responded. And then Phil said the magic words: “Yes, they do.” Firstly, Greens on Tenth is a beautiful space -- high ceilings, huge windows, fresh flowers, sleek interior, a wine cellar, and tons of rentable party space to boot. Ann Blair Endsley, owner and operator of Greens, was kind enough to elaborate further.

8

She states: “The whole Greens company started because we have an organic farm. We started a small market that was all organic produce and specialty items, and after about a week after opening people wanted to sit down and enjoy the items we made. This space was originally a separate kitchen to prepare items for the market. Customers began knocking on the door here, so we decided to put some tables down.” She continued, “I didn’t set out to make a bar happen. The Greens business has adapted to what our customers have asked for. It has all evolved very organically.” The result is a sophisticated stop near the heart of downtown Modesto, offering menu and bar items so enticing it’s likely to make even the non-health conscious (such as myself) take note. Freshly squeezed organic juices coupled with Cold House vodkas (such as the pictured fresh pomegranate & Cold House martini), local wines, craft bottled beer, and a ‘organic whenever possible’ bar menu to match (Paleo, vegan, and gluten-free all welcome) provide a dining experience that is not only en pointe, but also mostly organically based, locally

MADE IN MODESTO

produced, and, dare I say, a bit good for you. One bar aspect Endsley is particularly excited about is their artisan gelato production. The Greens team has been working to infuse ice pops with a boozy touch to make savory sweet treats. Served up in champagne flutes and mixed with organic flavors, these are a definite don’t-miss. The mojito selection is supposed to be exceptionally dreamy. Endsley states her mission is to provide quality jobs, food, and service through Greens in the Modesto community -- and her affirmation seems almost too good to

be true, but she’s working it. Farm-fresh produce runs to both market and restaurant, fueling an attention and commitment towards excellent local produce and culinary detail, thereby establishing Greens on Tenth as a fantastic dining AND drinking stop on the downtown map. All this health talk has gotten me awfully motivated. I think I might actually sign up for the Turkey Trot this year. Watch out, Modesto. 953 Tenth Street, Modesto, CA 209.572.1700 www.greensmarket.net

Featuring: Joel Morrison, Ashley Rose Tacheira, Traci Sky Sprague, & Bev Young Barney In the last decade of the twentieth century, a beautiful young woman in nineteenthcentury clothing is found floating on an iceberg in the middle of the North Atlantic. When rescued, she says only one word: Titanic. The woman, Winifred, is taken to an isolated spot on the coast of Maine where an expert on the sinking of the liner, a mysterious man named John, has arranged to interrogate her for six days. His goal: to crack her story, get her to confess she’s a fake, and reveal her true identity; his one clue: her enigmatic references to an unknown place called “Scotland Road.” By the play’s end, one of the characters is dead, all the characters’ identities have been questioned, and John and Winifred’s shared secret is revealed as they make one final journey to Scotland Road.

That is an accurate description of the tortillas made right before your eyes, heading straight for your mouth, and a sensation for your taste buds at Rancho Fresco (RF) Mexican Grill! Yes, I’ll say it… these tortillas will blow your mouth’s mind! Good thing for downtown patrons that Ismael Covarrubias, owner of RF, was so compliant with local law enforcement, fire department, and those from the Grayson Training Center that they insisted he open a second location more conveniently located for their RF burrito fix! This new location on J St. has only been open 2 months and is another success. The original location on Crow Landing is also available if you think like me, breakfast at one & lunch or dinner at the other, right?! Ismael is the father of 2 beautiful girls (I saw the photos), manages, cooks, cleans, & embraces every function in his restaurants, while he occasionally makes time to dine at his other favorite restaurants including Vito’s and Raw Sushi Bistro with his girlfriend. Ismael is proud to prepare and serve all his Mom’s (Teresa) original recipes on his authentic Mexican menu. Chef Jorge is the unintentional RF slogan maker “Who’s Next?” which originated at the 1st location when he was swamped with a crowd taking orders faster than a machine, his only reply was “Who’s Next?!” Thank you to Rancho Fresco for supporting and promoting numerous local charities to everyone that comes by, including DID, Veteran’s Hall, and he donates his banquet room to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Mo View signature question, Beatles or Stones? Ismael, “Beatles”, Really? He said “oh yeah Paul McCartney is the man”, he obviously didn’t understand my question; I didn’t ask what man he admires! He is regretting his answers & wishes he said Stones! Writing the Chef View each month for the Modesto View is rewarding in so many ways, especially getting to meet Modesto’s hard-working culinary employees, getting fed like a queen, and having the privilege to share my finds with the loyal Mo Viewers and patrons of Modesto and the surrounding communities. Please know at my Thanksgiving table I will give thanks to everyone for this opportunity that truly enriches my life. Happy Thanksgiving!

ROCKABILLY

Mr. Roddy Jackson by Jennifer Allsup Let’s stand-up and give a huge applause to Mr. Roddy Jackson, 2014 Rockabilly M.A.M.A. winner!! If, you weren’t lucky enough to witness a magical night of reuniting musicians on Oct 14th, you missed one heck of a party. Mr. Jackson reunited with some old friends Kent Witt and the Downbeats, taking the stage together after many, many years of being on their own musical adventures. Hanging out with Mr. Jackson was truly memorable He is very witty with a continuous smile from ear to ear. He told me how much he appreciated us all celebrating and recognizing all the talents old and young. Here is a little background about the ole’ so cheerful Mr. Roddy Jackson! Mr. Jackson was born in Fresno and moved to Merced as a child. His father was a singer and songwriter and he learned to play many instruments at an early age. Roddy started his musical talent at the age of twelve learning piano and drum. Shortly after forming his first band “The Dreamers“. In his high school days Roddy auditioned at Specialty Records and played with the Merced Blue Notes and in 1960 became part of the Central Valley’s first supergroup, Kent Witt and the Downbeats with Roddy Jackson. Roddy was signed as a solo artist, by recommendation of Sonny Bono. Roddy continued playing but still tours around the world as a global ambassador of Rockabilly music. Some songs you might be familiar with. “I’ve Got my Sights Set On Someone New” & “Hiccups “ both done in 1958. In 1999 Paul McCartney recorded Roddy’s “She Said Yeah” which is on his hit album, “Run Devil Run.” It is a burner. Since 1995 Roddy has been entertaining throughout the Central Valley, in the Bay Area and on the Coast doing his one-man show, “Roddy Jackson, The Music Man.” Ace Records in London, UK, released an album titled “Central Valley Fireball,” in 2007 Roddy performed in “Rhythm Riot,” the biggest oldies music festival in Europe

College and also Balico-Cressey School District. He continues to teach as a private music tutor at Gottschalk Music in Merced. His career is still rockin! He started work on his new record for Hi Ho Silver Records with a hot Rockabilly band and no doubt this will be another amazing record from the “Central Valley Fireball”! We can’t wait to hear it and we will keep you posted. He is a Rockabilly Legend!!!

Matt Nathanson Returns to Modesto Matt Nathanson is an honorary Modestan and each and every one of us can feel good when you hear his songs on the radio. Matt has lived in San Francisco since 1997 and quickly became a regular fixture in the Modesto music scene. The first X Fest in 2000 featured Matt Nathanson and he has performed at nearly all venues in Modesto during regular appearances here through 2005. He has performed top bill shows and some 92.9 Underground Lounges in the last few years here in Modesto. Between 2005 and 2007 he hit the big time, with his album “Some Mad Hope” burning up the charts everywhere unleashing hits like the platinum selling “Come on Get Higher” and “Car Crash”. “Faster” put him in the top tier of music in 2011 and the rest is global history. His newer records sell like crazy. He has toured with Kelly Clarkson and headlines his shows that sell out. His most recent project was to assist with providing 1000+ hearing aids in Peru with the Starkey Hearing Project. The “Headphones” video will melt your heart and the song will lift your heart. You will never forget a live show with Matt, whether in a room with 20 people or a packed auditorium. He is funny, clever and amazingly talented. We caught up with Matt just after his return from London. Chris Murphy: Matt, so excited to hear that you are coming back to Modesto for Hit Radio 92.9 Acoustic Christmas. It blows my mind to see you now on MTV and documentaries feature you as a “spokesperson for music” and part of the top tier of successful musicians. We are lucky that you really got your start in music back here in Modesto, way back when. Matt Nathanson: I know, it just doesn’t seem like it was that long ago. It all started to happen back with X-Fest in 2000. It was a really good line up back then and then I have played all over Modesto and big shows like Summerfest and it always feels good to play here.

You’ve

Local comedian, Anthony K is working his way to the top of his game by performing at places such as the San Francisco International Comedy Festival and Sacramento’s famed Laughs Unlimited where everyone from Chris Rock to Jerry Seinfeld have taken the stage. Catch the return of Anthony K to Modesto on Nov 29 at the Fat Cat and prepare to be blown away. Quite a bit has happened to shape his popular act in the past six years. Support this guy, folks. He is going places and going there quickly. MV: So, we hear that you’re quickly becoming a famous comedian. What have you been up to? AK: I’m the furthest thing from “Famous” but I have been getting more work and am staying busy which is all I want. I’m currently trying to develop new material and a show that i’m writing.

MV: Who are your comedy idols? Is there one comedian that you really look up to the most? AK: My favorite comedians are Roseanne Barr, Patrice O’Neal, Chris Rock, Jim Norton and Opie & Anthony. I’d say that I look up to Patrice O’Neal the most because of his stance on the business (of comedy) and I always like comics who are just “thinkers”. ALLAGES Turkey Trot

by Leia Johnson

EPIC FILM Hometown Hero Epic Film by Chris Murphy

It’s the time of year we all start to think about what we are truly thankful for. I had the honor of going to The Modesto Area Music Awards (MAMAS), with my dad. It made me realize what a great music scene Modesto has to offer. Whether it’s Rock, Pop, Hip-Hop, Metal or Folk, Modesto has it. I’m going to make more of an effort to see local music, and so should you. This is also a time of giving from what we have to make other people enjoy the holiday. You will hear ringing bells by the red kettles. When you’re passing these kettles, be sure to drop some change in, every bit makes a difference. The money you place in these kettles will be sent to the Salvation Army and used for those in need As we are coming towards the colder months, we find so many coats that we aren’t using. One of my wonderful friends, Emma Baily is taking used coats, washing them, and making sure they are finding a home. I think that this is a great idea to keep everyone cozy during the cold seasons. She is especially in need of girls coats. If you would like to donate and make a dif-

ference in someone’s season email Emma Baily at thebailys@me.com. I mentioned the Turkey Trot last year, but it’s definitely worth going to again. The Turkey Trot is a 5k run on Thanksgiving morning. What’s a better way of appreciating our community than spending time in it with your friends or family in the beautiful Tuolumne River Regional Park. Whether you are six or sixty, the Turkey Trot is exciting. There is even a mini kid friendly race at the beginning. Sign up at finishedresults.com or ZVents.com. Whether you’re running, listening to our cool music, or donating, I hope to see all of you out in Modesto this month!

BIG by Chris Murphy I love crafty and creative people. Better yet, I love it when there are a lot of creative and crafty people like we have here in Modesto. From the musicians who craft amazing music, to our artists that craft wonderful works of art, to our super diverse group of crafts people that make clothes, books, gifts, and other creative crafty things. I live in a house loaded with creative crafty works with my wife Rebecca Murphy constantly creating cool works of art. We get to celebrate our community craftiness at Mod Shop on the Saturday after Thanksgiving from 6-10 on J St in downtown Modesto. Not only is this Small Business Saturday, it is our shop local day. It is highly possible that you can complete any holiday shopping list during Mod Shop. Mod Shop picked up where HandBorn left off a few years ago and now it is back and better than ever featuring music, fun, food, fellowship and really cool handmade things you want. We introduce to you the secret agents of craftiness that bring Mod Shop to life. Kate Trompetter, who by day runs Marketing and PR for Center for Human Services, is one of our best community service advocates. She is married to Dave Rogers (an awesome drummer) and they are raising three kids. Ruhi Sheikh bears the heavy burden of being married to our amazing Ninja Poet Sam Pierstorff, but in reality she works for the Stanislaus Community Foundation, has her own jewelry line and is dedicated to living and teaching her craftiness and even assisted her three talented kids at the All Kids Craft Faire at the Library. Tricia Rosenow is a map maker by day, seamstress by night. Tricia Rosenow has been a part of the arts community in Modesto for many years. The mother of two was a fixture at Handborn with her business dittyPop bags, and was a member of Modesto’s favorite dance troupe, The Radiowaves. ModestoView is on a mission for people to learn about and explore all things local, shop local, eat, drink and live local, so let’s meet our super mod and special agents of craftiness. Kate, Ruhi, and Tricia ModestoView: What is so important about having a self sufficient hand made craft industry in a community? Ruhi- Having a community that can rely on their hand made crafts to generate a living is empowering. When you can combine your passion with being financially independent, you end up with residents who aren’t afraid to think outside the box, which makes our community richer and more diverse. MV: Do you feel that kids of this generation are getting the craft skills they need for a well rounded life? Ruhi- There does seem to be so much emphasis on academics nowadays that there doesn’t even seem to be time for kids to learn about things like how to make crafts. Being able to envision something, design it, and then bring it to life with your hands teaches so many skills that are long lasting. It’s an education that is just as valuable. MV: What message do we need to send to our community about the value of “Handmade” and “Locally Produced”? Ruhi- We live in a small community and when you purchase something that is created here in Modesto or eat at a restaurant here in Modesto, you are helping a small business stay open, which keeps your hard earned dollars here in our town, which will then benefit our town where we live and help us grow and flourish. It’s a win-win for everyone.

Kate: Keep our dollars here! This is about celebrating our community’s gifts AND it’s about economic development. There is so much talent in our city. This event is just one of several examples of how we can showcase the skills and gifts of our residents. At the same time, shopping locally keeps our money here. Keeping money within our community makes it healthier. MV: For people that think crafts and they think old quilting bee, what do we need to say to them and how can they be enlightened. Ruhi- First of all, if they think that, they need to come to Mod Shop to see for themselves how high caliber these “crafts” are. We have people who screen print original designs on t-shirts, jewelry made from reclaimed metal by hand. We have industrial, hand sewn denim clothing, furniture that is custom designed and built. We challenge you to not be impressed with the “crafts” you see at Mod Shop. Kate: Then they haven’t been to Mod Shop. What will be on display at this event, it’s high quality, something-for-everyone, irresistible product. This is not your grandma’s craft show, unless your grandma is totally awesome, in which case you should bring her with you. MV: - What are some of your favorite handmade experiences? Ruhi- Some of my favorite gifts that I have received have been handmade. I love to hear why they chose a certain fabric and why they designed something special for me in mind. It’s incredibly touching and so memorable. Tricia: I love teaching skills to the younger generation. We have crafty play dates and the kids get to bring home a handmade skirt or stuffed animal and they are so proud to show off their work to family and friends. MV: What is your own secret weapon of craftiness? Are you good with a glue gun, sharp with sewing or ace with art or something else? Ruhi- I love to plan parties! I love all the fine details for how you can make your party original and memorable. From the hand made decorations, color scheme, thematic food to the party favors. I love to create it all from scratch. Tricia: I’ve been sewing since high school, It’s a great skill to have and comes in handy to help people with alterations, costumes, or a custom bag or clothing item that they can’t find anywhere else. I recently made a walker bag for someone just out if surgery, and historical costumes for a school event. Kate: Ruhi and Tricia are the crafty ones of this trio. They are party planners, decorators, sewers, creators. One of these years perhaps they’ll rub off on me.

MV: What can people expect at Mod Shop? Ruhi- bottom line, the warm and fuzzies. When you walk downtown during this busy holiday weekend with your family and friends, and you see tons of people out shopping in our local stores and not Black Friday Shopping at the mall, you will feel so touched and you will feel pride. You will see downtown all lit up and hear beautiful music as you shop from store to store. You’ll be amazed by the variety of items that are all handmade and you will find something for everyone you love on your list. You’ll get to see a part of Modesto that you may not see everyday. A thriving, talented community that you can be proud to be a part of. Kate: Fun, family, friends, live music, shopping, food and drink. If you come downtown on the 29th, do some shopping, support a local business, hang with some friends and hear some great music, expect to walk away from this event feeling full, literally and figuratively. MV: Say someone doesn’t care one bit about hand made anything, why should they care? Kate: If you’re looking for a reason to celebrate this community and have a great time, come downtown on the 29th. If you’re not about crafts, be about participating in your community. You’ll be glad you did and you’ll feel proud. MV: Describe your ideal day in Modesto? Ruhi- My ideal day includes laziness and yummy food. Sleeping in, going to breakfast at Deva. Going to Queen Bean for coffee after, reading a book on the porch. While the kids read quietly too.. this is ideal right? Going for a walk downtown, taking the kids to the park , walking to Camp 4 for a late lunch. Maybe attend a really neat Science talk at MJC and a visit to the Great Valley Museum . Hooking up with friends for dinner at Sushi Garden and a movie with the kiddos after. Rinse Repeat. Tricia: I like to start the day with coffee at Preservation, walk down to the farmers market for the best fruit and veggies in the world, then take the kids to the library for a new stack of books. In the evening, catch a show at the Gallo Center and meet up with friends at a new place downtown. I’ve been meaning to make it to Commonwealth! Kate: It’s probably very similar for all of us. I’d want to start with a really great cup of coffee at Preservation. Then I’d go to farmers market with my daughter. If I’m lucky, I’ll visit a great restaurant with my family and find some time for my friends. Generally, I’d just want to be where my community is…there are some of the best people in this town. #10 Beatles or Stones? Ruhi- I love a British bloke in fitted jeans, but I’m going to have to pick Coldplay. Sorry Chris Murphy. Tricia: Beatles Kate: Can I say James Taylor? If you’re making me pick, I choose the Beatles. J

Cosmic Bath and Beauty was born out of my desire for honest, natural and affordable body care products to serve the needs of my family. As a lifelong creative & maker, I decided that if I couldn’t find quality products that met my new-found requirements, I was happy to make them. And if I was going to start somewhere, the beginning – cleansing – made the most sense. So I set out to create a simple soap that was both gentle and effective with ingredients that even my children could pronounce. Cosmic Bath and Beauty launched in 2010 with what our family called “the ultimate bar of soap.” At Cosmic we hand-cut and bevel each bar to fit comfortably in hands both large and small. We use blends of essential oils & non toxic fragrance oils that stimulate body, mind and soul. Continued next page

ACOUSTIC Yosemite Songwriting by Aaron Rowan Retreat I turn this month’s column over to one of Modesto’s great musical gems, who would like to share her recent experience at a wonderful new songwriter conference. Yosemite Songwriting Retreat By Francesca Bavaro A few months ago, I had the honor of winning the MUMfest songwriting contest. I was elated, proud and humbled. Then, on top of that I was surprised with a gift. A gift I didn’t even know the extent of. I won a stay at the Yosemite Songwriting Retreat for this past weekend. I had just been researching it but decided I couldn’t afford it and I thought it, ‘It must have been fate!’ And if that is the case, then fate is wonderful. The Yosemite Songwriting Retreat was a whole new world for me. All of the people there created this huge melting pot of experienced songwriters with a history to the few who had never even written a line before. It was truly magnificent to see a community of people so

supportive to someone they had just met a few hours ago. The age range of everyone there was really interesting to me. I was the youngest at 22, but it just kept going! Everyone got along so well, no matter what their age or experience. They offered little master class sessions on Saturday and Sunday by the guest teachers they brought out from across the country. Peter Rowan, Terre Roche from the Roche Sisters and Keith Greeninger. They played mainly folk music, which I’ve never dived into, and it was eye opening. They’re songs were so hauntingly beautiful, with intricate lyrics that went beyond telling stories. So from them I was inspired to write and I got two songs out of the weekend that I love. We stayed in a dorm style room, and my roommates were fantastic. Three beautiful women, different in age, style, and experience. But at nighttime everyone would come together after hours to jam and explore each other’s musical flavors.

There was bluegrass as well as the folk music and that was certainly entertaining. I loved hearing all the root songs and the instruments plucking away vigorously. I was slightly at a loss all weekend because I didn’t bring my keyboard but I don’t think it would have fit in anyway. I enjoyed just being a listener and taking it all in that weekend. Overall, I would say that this experience was one of the best I’ve had. For one weekend, strangers came together and became this tight knit family. The atmosphere was wonderful, the commodities were great, and the music was perfect. Gail Dreifus, the woman who runs this shindig, is an amazing person for doing this. She was

Who has taken a trip out to Yosemite Blvd to check out some of the dive bars? There are some funky places to explore but they all have their own special sense of charm and nostalgia and that is likely why dive bars have grown in popularity lately. Take the time to cruise over and check out June Bugs. This cozy little spot had been called Glo Worm for a very long time but changes have been made to spiff it up a bit. All the classic dive bar features are in play - Cheap, strong drinks, pool, interesting characters and a jukebox. You really can’t go wrong! like a proud mother watching all of us get up there for the open mic nights. I hope she continues to find happiness in bringing others complete bliss. Also, thank you to Aaron Rowan. Thanks to him, I got to go! I would definitely recommend everyone who loves songwriting to go. Next year will be here before you know it. Go write some songs!

MAMA MAMA Favorites by Middagh Goodwin Wow what a great time we all had with the Modesto Area Music Awards this year. When Murphy and Ricci conceived the idea for the 1st MAMA 15 Years ago back in Y2K, most of the members of the Youth Bands were not even born. Maybe they had it in the back of their minds that the world was going to end and they wouldn’t have to be doing this for the rest of their lives. But Music is Alive and Well and could not be stopped by Y2K or the Mayans end of the world predictions. If we all continue to support each other to build things up it will only continue to thrive and get stronger for another 15 plus years. The biggest surprise was that of Mike Vanek 209 Productions, winning the award for promoter. If you saw the shock, tears and joy on his face you would know it was unexpected even for him. Modesto’s Super Group performing Tusk by Fleetwood Mac, with the Gregori High School marching band was another highlight of the night. The evening was filled with great music from Nathan Ignition kicking off the night to early Metal performances by Perfect Nightmare (Youth Band Winner) and Bombs Overhead to Before Twenty ending the night representing Reggae as a category for the first year. The mini-mama was introduced with Doug Robinett (Rock Pose), Jennifer Allsup (Best Wigs) and Laser Voodoo(Lights and Lasers) being presented this new addition to the ceremony. Big Earl and I presented a super secret award to Murphy and Ricci the PAPA for all the hard work and dedication they have put in over the last few decades. We the music fans are all the real winners, each show, each performance. Thanks to all the performers and all the venues that give us such a rich and vibrant scene. 2015 will be here sooner then we think and the next batch of nominees are already performing all around the 209. Make plan to see at least a couple shows a month and become an educated voter for 2015 Modesto Area Music Awards. Saturday Nov. 1st Mike Vanek kicks things off at Spinnakers with a Day of the Dead Celebration with

METAL Reflections of the Past and Future 20 years of 209 Heavy Metal and Rock Shows... by Mike Vanek Hi & Howdy friends and neighbors!! As you may know I was fortunate enough to win a MAMA Award for best live music promoter... Before I go on, I must congratulate Best Metal Band Winners BRUTAL INNOCENCE!! Who works hard as hell to bring you a rad metal band!! With that said... This honor has made me reflect on the past 20 years. In the 90’s things were different... I remember rad bands... I remember venues that are no longer with us and the people that brought us the shows the shaped our scene... Bands like IMMORTALITY, INFESTATION, CARCINOGEN, FATHOM, ALCOMY, were some of the first bands to attract my attention. These bands made way for bands like Built, Makeshift Grey, Dam, Isolate, Butterface, Cursed/Cursed AD, Differential, Rubberfinger, and Morbius among others. I remember the people who brought the knowledge of the way our business works. Chris Walker, Robin Steely, Dave Ussery, Jojo Rush, Bobby Hart, Meeker, Jimbo, Jeremy Penick, Ryan Birchfield, Bryan Campbell, Chris Ricci, Mike Allsup and his cousin Russ, Mike Inderbitzen, Chris Watson,

Bryan Strait, Mitch Maisetti(RIP), Chris Murphy and everyone else that supports and taught us the game!! I also like to think about the future of our scene. I think about bands like Brutal Innocence and the excitement they bring. I think about Perfect Nightmare who has the brightest future of all. Those kids are as rad as it gets!! Most of all I hope. I hope for somebody to take over the Fat Cat and reopen it to the public. I hope for people to start new bands and new music. I love our scene and will never stop putting work in our scene till the day I am no longer in this world!! I wouldn’t be the person I am today with out the bands, the people and the scene!! Thank you very much for 20 years of 209Metal!! Keep one foot in the gutter & one fist in the gold!!

BLUES&JAZZ by Eric Benson If you love Jazz you’re going to love this. One of our own home grown musicians Johnny Valdes is doing a CD release party in conjunction with the Blue Monday Party Nov 3rd from 7-10PM at the Barkin’ Dog Grill. The CD is a duo Jazz guitar album with virtuoso guitarist John Stowell. Backing Johnny up will be the Straight Ahead band with Dave Hawks drums, Marti Martinez Sax, and John Adey on bass. As Mike Wolff Steinway endorsed Jazz pianist said “Right now everyone’s a jazz musician…everyone’s struggling”. But for Johnny he is one of the few making a good living playing live music, teaching guitar and doing what he loves. He plays Jazz, R & B, Funk and rock music with his partner in crime Kelly Ramirez. Life on the B-side, life was like that, livin’ on the down low, life in B-flat. He’s the drill: sleep late, pack your gear and play 5-6 nights a week in venues where the music is sometimes out front & personal, sometimes wallpaper. His day job or we should say night job allows him to woodshed the music he loves and share it with students and fans. Johnny has studied with Mimi Fox, mentioned in Downbeat’s top 100 guitarists, and John Stowell, and others. His influences are broad: from Jimi Hendrix, Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny, Mile to Coltrane. On the bandstand Johnny has played with: Chris Cain, Dave Mathews, Mic Gillette, Bruce Forman, John Stowell, Mark Little, Ro Rodgers, Gabriel Manzo of Malo, Lady Bianca, Barry Finerty, Freddie Roulette, and others. Some come down for a sampling of Johnny’s music with the Straight Ahead band, you won’t be disappointed. Call the Dog for reservations: 572-2341, tell em Eric Benson sent you. Some bright moments recently: the drama with the MAMA’s with a tearful Mike Vanek winning for promoting his metal mayhem, Patty Castillo won for her acoustic vocals prowess, Barkin’ Dog for best small venue and Hero’s for best large venue. Congrats to Big Earl & the Cryin Shame for a sellout at the Gallo, so if you don’t like the news go

out and make some of your own, as Herb Cain once said. The Gallo Center for the Arts continues with their diverse booking in November: 5th America, 9th Herb Alpert & Lani Hall, 10th Art Garfunkel, and the 22nd classic album: the Beatles’ Abbey Road. Got my tickets to Art Garfunkel, if you have not seen him he is amazing with or without his other half Simon. Live music in DEWZ Wine Bar is back in November with live music Friday and Saturday nights 7 to 10:00 PM, incorporating the best local musicians playing in the intimate wine bar environment. The lineup for Nov:1st TBA, 7th & 21st Francesca Bavaro, 8th & 28th John King & Robin Montgomery Jazz guitar duo, 14th & 22nd Tim Allen best of Elton & Billy Joel, 15th Stephen Bernd smooth Jazz guitarist, 29th yours truly Eric Benson & Robin Montgomery Jazz trio with vocalist Rayleen Kemp.

AUTHOR

“Friday Night Lights” by Ken White In the spirit of James Joyce. There was nothing like Friday night football, sitting in the stands on a fall night, while two sets of helmeted, padded, and cleated gladiators did battle for school pride. It was an opportunity to check out the cheerleaders, as well the rest of the girls at our school and the opposing school. It was a chance to show our school spirit and root for the home team. And try to stay out of fights. There were always hoods from our school and the rival school that were ready to pick on smaller kids and maybe each other, if they’d gotten enough liquid courage. Never a dull moment. Kids, like schools of swarming fish, came together and separated in the autumn sunset, giggle-talking to one another, checking their hair and make-up while looking for the other, trying to find that special missing person and hoping they were looking for you, with waving banners of school spirit and widemouthed, laughing faces overwhelmed by everything drowned out by the uniformed pep band and short-skirted yell leaders under bright, white lights begging you to watch the game on the field instead of the game in the bleachers, but knowing they were a side-show not the main attraction as the announcer described the action and named names and the fans on the opposite side were a faint memory of hot dogs and See’s suckers, cotton candy and cool evenings threatening rain, but you were packed so tight on hard, splintery, wooden benches that you were warm enough and hoped you wouldn’t have to pee in a crowded bathroom before half-time when the drum major strutted onto the grassy field followed by a phalanx of uniforms, playing fight songs and Souza marches until the muddy combatants returned following a locker room pep talk, fired up and leaving it all on the dead brown field until the Zebra’s gun sounded victory or defeat and everyone streamed away to their next rendezvous to do it all over again.

POETRY by Sam Pierstorff

Handle With Care When love arrived on our doorstop in a box wrapped in plain brown delivered by a man in the same color, we shook it—its tiny pieces rattling like popcorn kernels in an iron skillet. The directions were in Mandarin and French. We spoke neither. I retrieved the toolkit, the hammer and nails, the long screwdriver with the plus sign at the tip. You grabbed a towel, worried about the mess I would soon make. But you were patient, like a scrub nurse, handing me parts and holding your palm open for the pieces I gave back. It took hours, and sure, there were screams, but it was finally built: love. We made it. And each night, as we reassemble it, we discover what else it can do and learn about the parts we have forgotten to use.

Aqua Aerobics 101 Swimming is a great part of my training as a tri-athlete although it can be somewhat monotonous going back and forth 128 times in a 25 meter pool. But there is an alternative if you’re not training for a long distance swim. Sherrie DeBerry has been teaching aqua aerobics since 1988 and I always get a sunshine smile greeting from her and her students when I come across them at my gym’s pool. Aqua Aerobics is a great cardio workout with low impact on one’s joints. During her hour long class, they practice several different exercises that would include resistant training with Water Noodles, BuoyBarbells, Kickboards and balls. No worries if you’re not the strongest swimmer, the class takes place in the shallowest part of the pool, so if you lose your balance you just stand up. Sherrie’s Aqua Aerobics takes place at The Brenda Athletic Club on Norwegian in Modesto 4 days a week Monday through

by Efren Martinez

Thursday at 8:00am. The class is co-ed so it’s a great way to share some fitness with your partner. The pool is heated so the class is year round; rain or shine, fog or wind, they are always in the pool. In fact the only time the class would be canceled is if an electrical rainstorm was in our area. Some of the biggest benefits to her aqua aerobics class would be cardio, core, strength training, toning, stretching, flexibility and balance without a lot of jarring and pressure on your joints. This is why most doctors actually refer a lot of their patients to her class According to The Aquatic Exercise Association you can expect to burn 400 to 500 calories per hour when exercising in the

water. Additionally water offers 12 times the resistance of air which helps to improve muscle strength. Sherrie’s message: “Come Join US! It is SO MUCH FUN! We laugh a lot and have become great friends like a little aqua family. I’ll give you a great workout! We have a lot

of different ages, shapes and sizes. Some are in great shape and some are recovering from an injury or surgery. No matter what level you are at, I will work with you and help you. Water aerobics is a great thing and you deserve something GREAT!”

Aqua Aerobics Fitness Tips.

Use Aqua Socks for a better foot grip. A silicone aqua cap helps keep your head warm in the winter. A bathrobe in chilly weather is recommended for after you exit the pool. www.facebook.com/QuakeFitness

BARGAIN Happy November Words and Photos by Monica Barber The sun creeped down the horizon some- 8th, the Motown Brewfest welcomes over time ago and I’m adjusting to writing in my car by overhead light. I excused myself from writing in the corner of Preservation Coffee so that the lovely people could get home. It’s shaped up to be another late night working on words for Ms. M. Somehow the thought occurs to me that I’m lucky I don’t have to do this everyday. I’m fortunate not to live in my car and blessed to know that after I’m done sending my emails, I have a home to return to. While it’s not ideal living circumstances, currently I have food, a warm bed and family surrounding me everyday. Being thankful is something we don’t often do because we don’t make room for it. Well much like your wallet, your gratitude can be budgeted in! Here’s some ways to appreciate others and give back locally this November Dia de Los Muertos, also known as the Day of the Dead is a honored celebration in the Mexican Culture. It may sound grim, but it’s very much a celebration of living. You honor your loved ones that are dead. On November 1st Modesto welcomes the 2nd Annual Day of The Dead Celebration to the Centre Plaza. Live entertainment, dinner and dancing with proceeds to benefit The Annual Toy Drive. Tickets: $35. Students: $20. More info: 209-872-9415 Getting a frosty brew may not sound like a way to help your community but in fact, spending money locally shows your appreciation for Modesto! On November

16 breweries and resturaunts from the local area paired with live music. Tickets are $25 and will get you five 8oz drinks, fare for cuisine from any restaurant and an uber coupon to help you get home. Proceeds benefit the Mellis Scholarship Fund. Info: http:// www.motownbrewfest.com/ Giving a little TLC from your helping hands by donating time to those in need is one of the most rewarding and immeasurably valuable things you can do to lift spirits. Interfaith Ministries always welcomes donations of clothing, money and time. On November 22nd they are teamed up with Artsy Folks to host a Holiday Boutique. Crafters, Artists and Vintage Vendors will be on site at the beautiful Mchenry Mansion to sell some Christmas goodness for a great cause. Check out Farmers Market and swing through! Info: http://interfaithmodesto.org/ The 2nd Annual ModShop arrives just in time for those Christmas gifts and wraps up your November in a lovely way. This annual locally endorsed public event celebrates and showcases independent artisans, crafters and designers right after Thanksgiving. Join together to support your favorite handcrafter or artistan November 29th from 6pm10pm in Downtown Modesto along J Street. Info: http://www.modshop209.com/ Stay grateful for everything and remember to budget in time to appreciate each other! Happy November! Kisses, m.

DOWNTOWN MODESTO

Many restaurants start serving dinner early so that you can get a nice meal in before the shows and movies that begin at 7 or 7:30.

Open Late!

Downtown Modesto is the place to be late Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. There is live music every night of the week in one of our great clubs or restaurants. After the show, stop and enjoy a nightcap.

There are parking garages at 9th and L Street, 11th and K Street, 11th and I Street and 12th and H Street. Parking is close to all restaurants!

Go Downtown Modesto! ModestoView is all over the new Modesto Environmental Calendar. This is a really cool thing that comes out each year and features local area images on each month. This year, some of the images that you see in ModestoView made the calendar pages. Along with other local artists, Becky Murphy, Ruben Porras, Adrian Mendoza and Chris Murphy’s art and images are featured. Make sure you pick up your calendar today and start marking the important days. Calendar is available at 10th St Place or you can print it online: http://www.ci.modesto.ca.us/pwd/docs/Environmental-Calendar. Artsy Folk Holiday Boutique Artsy Folks (formerly Artsy Girls) will be hosting a Christmas Boutique for Inter-Faith Ministries of Greater Modesto on Saturday November 22nd at the beautiful and historic McHenry Museum, 1402 I Street, in Modesto. If you’re interested in being a vendor call: Elizabeth Greenlee-Harrison 209/480-9414 or 209/572-3117. If you are a vendor, make sure you invite your friends! www.facebook.com/events/308602189323751 There are many ways to help out during the holidays. We like the Salvation Army because over 85% of all funds received go directly to those in need and all are served without discrimination. The best way to help is not to give to people in the streets, but to give to organizations that do the most good in the right places. The Salvation Army serves this way. You can be a bell ringer for Salvation Army by calling 209-522-3209. You can do this as an individual, a family, or with a group. You can also give personal items that are needed in the shelters. Donations can be taken to 320 9th St or 625 I St. Items needed are: Toiletries, bedding, underwear & socks. The shelter opens Nov 3 Modesto starts the giving season off big! Join your friends at the Modesto Center Plaza for the Salvation Army Kettle Kick Off. Nearly $200,000 gets raised to help prepare for the winter and holiday season. The Kick-off is Thursday, November 20, 11:30 at the Centre Plaza. Tables are only $100 for a table of 10 and nearly sold out. If you can’t make it please donate. http://www.salvationarmymodesto.org/ Spirit of Giving Run is coming December 13. This is another fun run and will have a new start location in 10th St Place and there will even be snow for the start of the race. Preregister Nov 8 at 11-2 pm for the Modesto Spirit of Giving 5k run at Fuzio Universal Bistro while enjoying free refreshments and spin the wheel for prizes. Don’t forget to bring a canned food item to benefit the Modesto Gospel Mission. T-Cups Cafe - 10th Street Place, Downtown Modesto (Next to Brenden Theatres) Tired of waiting a whole year between county fairs to score a delicious funnel cake? No worries folks! You can now satisfy your funnel cake desires year-round! A new business has opened next to Brenden Theatres at 10th Street Place that serves delicious milk teas (must try) and a variety of other appetizers and goodies. T-Cups had an action-packed grand opening and they hope to prove the curse of their location wrong. To make things even more convenient, they offer free wi-fi access, plug-ins and they are open until midnight on Friday and Saturday. Nice to see something so modern and fun downtown!
