GREETINGS Greetings Modesto Friends! Step outside and breath in. There is something really special about this time of year. In November, it finally feels like fall, the evenings are crisp and the smells are intense. The scent of pumpkin spice seems to be just about everywhere and appears magically like the smells at Disneyland and the clink of glasses celebrating family get togethers over Thanksgiving are truly special times and bring back memories of every reunion and gathering. Harvest in Modesto is amazing. Soup, Squash, Fall Colors, Turkey Trots, Jazz on 10th and 11th, Buskers on the corner for ModShop and those crisp evenings where we finally get to get our sweaters out. These are the changes that snap your nose and make you pay attention. The college kids come home for Thanksgiving and there is touch football in the parks, and bike rides to the Yogurt Mill, Saturday breakfasts at Deva after the Farmers Market and so many uniquely Modesto things to do. These are the times that family memories are made, whether you are young and just starting out, or a teen in high school, or a couple that have been here forever and have your favorite habits. It all comes together in the fall. This is going to an amazing coupe of months. Great events at the Gallo Center, Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving, school drama and music concerts, ModShop Craft Faire downtown after Thanksgiving, B93 Acoustic Christmas on Dec 2 at the State, Modesto Holiday Parade, Rockin’ Holidays in 10th St Place with Rockin’ Santa and snow beginning Dec 5 and for the first time ever in downtown Modesto (since the old ice rink burned down at JC in the 80s) we will have Modesto On Ice beginning on Nov 22 for fun for all ages and our Spirit of Giving Run on Dec 12 and then we are into the Nutcracker and then Christmas. I am thankful that my family is healthy and that Madison and Ryan have settled here in Modesto and are surviving their home remodel, and Abbey is recovered from West Nile and is doing great at Berkeley. I am thankful for all of you that made donations to the CSUS One Purpose Scholarship program as we are making a solid bet on the future. I am thankful for my friends that mean so very much. I am truly lucky to have so many that feel like family and they are the reason that it is so wonderful to live here in Modesto. When I think of all the crazy things we think up do to and than actually make it happen, we are all just crazy and love living here. From the MAMAs to Rockin’

MAMA2015 Music in Modesto is an Amazing Thing by Chris Murphy We have so much musical talent, so much variety and a community that is really special. It was really special to celebrate 16 years of the Modesto Area Music Awards last month. Normally, we don’t look back in ModestoView, but music is one of my passions, and enjoying and celebrating the talent that we have here in our community is really important. There are few cities that music, the variety, the creativity and the flat out hard working musicianship that we see nearly every day. This is a treasure Modesto. We need to embrace, celebrate, support and encourage our local musicians, from the time that they start learning how to play in school band, with a music teacher to the day they do their first gig or even later, headline the Fillmore and tour the USA. All of that has happened with Modesto bands and on October 20, at the State Theatre we celebrated. Over 23 music awards

Photography by Michael Mangano were given that were chosen by the voters. The MAMAs recognized the legendary Ratz, one of Modesto’s pioneering rock bands of the 60s, out of which came Quicksilver Messenger Service. They still play locally today. We celebrated Modesto’s own music, Rockabilly, and we honored the bands of the next generation with a youth award. From singer songwriters, metal to classic Americana, Modesto came together to support our local musicians and venues. This is a special night for Chris Ricci and me, who 16 years ago, wanted to find a way to

recognize the talent and decided to host a black tie Grammy-style event. Today, the MAMAs are the peak of the Modesto music season and it is wonderful for musicians of all kinds, all the different radio stations, the venues, the promoters and the event planners all enjoyed an evening of Modesto music. Thank you so much to the fabulous historic State Theatre, Middagh Goodwin, Becky Murphy, Earl Matthews, Jennifer & Mike Allsup, Mark Oesau, Mark Haynes, JCD, Brandi Brown, Nathan Ignacio, Ron Meyer and Doug Robinett, Andy Johnson

The permits have been streamlined and city manager, Jim Holgersson has made it his mission to make doing business in Modesto easy. There is new teamwork with the Modesto Improvement Partnership that will be working cross function with operations, promotions and urban design

This is the classic chicken and the egg, we need more people downtown to get to the next level with housing and new businesses, but the downtown we have already is worth a visit. You will meet new friends at Commonwealth, enjoy all-ages music at the Barking Dog and you can walk everywhere. We will have snow in downtown for Rockin’ Holiday and we will even have ice skating with Modesto On Ice. You are never more than 4 blocks from anything when you park centrally Make it an evening, make it a day, get your camera and check out the architecture and more importantly, make notes about what you want. ART Much to be thankful for in November. by Jim Christiansen Zombie Apocalypse likely ended with All Saints Day, or sooner as Halloween gives way to Christmas and Winter Holiday shopping season. Mod Shop comes up November 28. Featured Saturday after Thanksgiving its get up and shop time from local artists and crafters. Before that, many other craft and arts fairs and pop up shops appear around the county, downtown and around Modesto. Preservation Coffee and Tea is rumored to have a pop up shop on second Saturdays. However you find us, consider buying original art and creations from local artists. Mistlin Gallery will feature the Memorial Hospital Complementary Therapy Group show of Art of Cancer Survivors. This annual show inspiring, often adding poetry into the mix of paintings, sculpture and other creations. Show runs to November 13. On the 14th, Mistlin Gallery opens its Home for the Holidays member show that runs to end of December. Congratulations to new Central California Art Association President Tony Pooler, for taking on the executive duties of the Mistlin Gallery organization. Chartreuse Muse will continue the 2gether show by Nicole Slater and Tammy Jo Schoppet.

Their opening October 10th, one of the best attended in recent memory. Muse also featuring other art and gift ideas as we get closer to Yule tide. Modspot will have art for sale, but also offering professional art classes with Esther Weinapple at the gallery on 13th and J, starting October 24, but continuing for four sessions. This is something new for them, and Esther did classes and taught with the Stanislaus Arts Council. Classes are popping up all over. Carol Earle has been hosting the free classes at Michael’s. Chartreuse Muse, Mistlin Gallery, Carnegie Arts Center also offer art classes for children and adults. Art Walk will be November 19, and Carolyn Huff Photography Gallery at 13th and K, Preservation Coffee and Still Smoking all good spots to drop in, if you haven’t already. Barkin Dog and PRAP gallery open, and you might

stop in at Trevino Barber Shop, in the old Gallery 909 stop. Art Walk always a good night to pick up something in original art by local artists. In Turlock, Carla Bengston art on display at the Art Space on Main, 139 Main Street. Next door is the Building Imagination Center. Carnegie Arts Center is not far away, with the Alphonse Mucha show running through January 10, now with the companion Organics show in the lobby. Carnegie has been offering music with art during the month. Check their website for events. www.carnegieartsturlock.org A stop in Turlock to consider for the holidays, First Street Frame Company. My October show “just add coffee” was a success for a one day event, but that means some art coming home, and being redistributed. DoGood Distillery: Made in Modesto! by Brandilyn Brown and Christopher Mitchell

Home Brew Recipe: A cute jar filled with Strawberry Lemonade and light ice, add 1 ounce Do Good Beechwood Whiskey Stir, serve, sip and enjoy!

Do Good Distillery is breaking the mold. The first distillery in Modesto to have a tasting room since the prohibition, is certainly one of the many triumphs they are known for. Since it’s inception in 2013, they have created more than 12 spirits, featuring several different whiskeys. The entire process is done as locally and sustainably as possible, though some ingredients need to be imported. The rye and corn they use is grown right here in our beautiful state, and the spent grains are given to farmers to feed their cows. Though still considered a new distillery, they are already making waves and bringing home medals. They just won 2 Whiskies of the World awards! Their Beechwood whiskey won Silver in Malt Smoked Craft, and Peat Smoked Whisky took home Bronze in Malt Heavy Smoke Craft. We got to sample the

winning spirits, and spend some time with the family, in their new tasting room. When you walk into the rustically furnished, homey space, you immediately sense what drives the family business. Ben Franklin’s famous quote, “You Do Well by Doing Good” graces the wall, alongside a photo of Officer Paul Roman Katuszonek. Paul’s love for bourbon fueled his passion to one day own and operate a distillery, but his life ended tragically on what should have been a normal, average work day. Led by former police officer Jim and his wife Liz, Paul’s friends and family came together (some moving to Modesto from Wyoming!), to begin distilling spirits with the same fervor Paul did. Paul lived out Franklin’s quote daily, so it was only fitting to choose a name to carry such a legacy on. Do Good Distillery was born. Ryan & Jenna Woods, partial owners of

Pura Vida, joined to manage the operations. When asked, “Why Modesto?” Jenna laughed. “Why not Modesto? Not only is Modesto our home, we want to put Modesto on the map for something positive. Napa is known for its wineries, and though we certainly have a flair for wine in the Valley, we could also be a hub for distilling. We could have a dozen distilleries that you could spend a whole day tasting. Tourists could come here and experience an array of spirits.” Yeah, we can support that idea! Dana’s Cranberry Turkey Melts

By Dana Johnson 4 hand carved slices of turkey breast 8 slices of sourdough sandwich bread 4 oz. whole cranberry sauce 4 sliced Havarti cheese 2 oz. olive oil Spread cranberry sauce on 4 slices of bread. Stack 1 slice turkey, then add 1 slice cheese, and top with another slice of bread to make a sandwich. Brush on olive oil on outside of bread. Grill until golden brown. Enjoy with an arugula side salad! Makes 4 sandwiches

2 c. chopped turkey (white and/or dark meat) 1/2 c. small diced celery 1/4 c. cranberries or craisins 1/4 c. light mayonnaise 1/4 c. light sour cream 1tbsp. brown mustard I bag spring mix 1/4 c. olive oil 4 roma tomatoes Combine first 6 ingredients in a medium size bowl. Slice open salad bag, pour in olive oil, shake bag to distribute evenly. Using 4 salad plates, divides salad. Use an ice cream scooper, place turkey mixture in the center of the salad. Garnish with tomato wedges. Makes 4 servings.

Dana’s Leftover Thanksgiving Pizza

1 tube pizza crust dough 1 1/2 c. mashed potatoes 1 c. turkey gravy 1 1/2 c. chopped white and/or dark meat turkey 1 c. sliced mushrooms 2 c. pizza cheese On a baking sheet unroll pizza dough. Spread on mashed potatoes, then gravy. Evenly distribute turkey, mushrooms, and cheese. Bake at 425 degrees for 15-20 minutes. Enjoy with a cranberry-orange gelatin salad. Makes 6-8 servings.

UNPLUGGED Swing Low, Sweet Cadillac by Rebecca Roudman My name’s Rebecca Roudman and I lead the San Francisco bluegrass/blues band Dirty Cello. We perform all over the world (including frequent visits to Modesto - headliners of MUMfest the past 3 years, and an appearance at the California Women‘s Music Festival this year) and love making music. We also like to use our music to help others whenever possible. Since 2011, I’ve been performing at a very interesting venue called the Cadillac Hotel. The Cadillac Hotel is a supportive housing development for over 160 tenants situated in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco. Kathy Looper, the director of the Cadillac Hotel, who helps the residents, also puts on noontime concerts for both the residents of the Cadillac Hotel and anyone from the neighborhood who wants to sit back and hear a concert. At my first show in the lobby of the Cadillac, I had a wonderful experience. The 30 residents who were in the audience were an enthusiastic and warm crowd. I’ve since come back to the Cadillac Hotel over and over again to perform for one of my favorite audiences. Recently while doing a concert there, Kathy seemed very upset. When I talked with her, she told me that they had recently received an order from the city to upgrade the buildings electrical system at a cost of over $300,000. We decided it would be good idea to host a benefit concert to help out. Along with the Cadillac Hotel, also in jeopardy is a doctor’s office for Chinese immigrants, the Bay Area Women’s and Children’s Center, a HeadStart program for 40 children, the Tenderloin Museum and SF Clean City. The Cadillac Hotel Benefit concert will be held on November 14 from 12 – 5 p.m. featuring diverse acts like Lavay Smith (1940’s swing), Melissa Cruz (flamenco dancer) ragtime pianist Wendy DeWitt, and of course the Dirty Cello band. November Movies As an architect in the central valley I have

designed many buildings using stucco as the exterior finish. This wonderfully versatile, economical and fire resistant product has been used in various forms and building types for thousands of years. However over the past several decades stucco has too often been used on the wrong buildings and in the wrong ways. Notable examples can be found in downtown Modesto where building owners have used it to recklessly cover up historic brick and stone building facades. This isn’t something that has just occurred in the past, it is still happening today. However one building on the 900 block of Tenth Street has given me hope for the

future. The owner of Greens is renovating the suite next door to their existing business at 953 10th street. This suite is part of the historic Ward Building. During this renovation they have torn down the stucco that covered the original building and have been restoring the historic façade. Although the project is still in progress, the transformation is remarkable. Built in 1911 the J.L. Ward Building located on 10th street between I and J, was designed by San Francisco Architect Bernard Joseph. The building has housed many businesses over the years including the J.L. Ward Furniture Company, the Modesto Bakery as well as JC Penny. Large glass windows topped with transoms on the first floor welcomed visitors to walk up and look inside. Above, the decorative brick patterns, quoins, and keystones elegantly framed large rectangular windows. This is how the building looked over a century ago. That is not the case today. The original building facade remained intact for many decades. However somewhere along the way and renovation after renovation, the original building became almost unrecognizable. The building owners had placed flat, beige stucco over nearly the entire façade. Thankfully for one portion of the building, this is no longer the case. The stark contrast between the newly restored historic façade and the adjacent suites that are still covered with stucco has never been more apparent. It is also encouraging that the City of Modesto has a Physical Improvements Incentives Program that allows for a grant of up to $10,000 for façade restorations within the downtown core. Projects like this one at Greens can qualify for this grant, and are a step in the right direction for downtown Modesto. I hope that others follow their lead and restore our history while revitalizing downtown for the future.

There are three powerhouse ladies that perform in our Rockabilly scene in Modesto. All lovely ladies with different backgrounds. Let’s start with Amie “Astelle” Alton. A freelance photographer for Lady Luck LLC is her day job. When, Amie is not shooting beautiful pin-up ladies, Amie is slappin’ that stand up bass whether on the streets of downtown Modesto or in a venue like coffee shops and a big stage like the Fat Cat. Amie also plays with numerous artists as a fill in for The Urban Pioneers out of TN, With Liz Sloan amazing fiddle player, Jared McGovern on vocals and guitar. Keith is gracious enough to sit out and allow Amie to step in. Amie also plays with Tony Trevino, Ray Vazira, Eli Allsup and Mike Allsup amongst others. Amie would love to travel with her bass and other musicians. One day that will come true. Amie and her bestie Shelly Sin also have a country based band that will be up and coming. Please stay tuned more from Amie. Or if you see her street performing. I suggest you stop and take a look at her mad skills, slappin that bass on the streets. The lovely and talented Tess Boyd a lady that has an amazing range on vocals, plays the ukulele and guitar. Tess is the front woman for the “Honey Shots”, who are on the Hi Ho Sliver record label owned and produced by Rick Torres in Sonora. I first met Tess many many years ago on stage singing her heart out with her husband Devon Boyd. Tess, has the voice of Wanda Jackson. Tess, has opened for the Mr.Tubbs & Modern Day Troubadours, The Saddle Tramps, Reverend Horton Heat in Modesto. Tess and her band can do covers and perform her originals as well. The Honey Shots are for hire in your club or private parties. Or if you like singer/songwriters she also does a solo project. She is a strong handed lady and not one to be reckoned with, unless you love those

INTER Cynthia Birdsill

Community and Economic Development Director, City of Modesto by Chris Murphy Cynthia Birdsill is one of the newest additions to the City of Modesto staff. In our January 2015 interview with City Manager Jim Holgersson, he indicated that there were really good things coming in regards to economic development. We are seeing those come to life now. ModestoView is very pleased to welcome Cynthia “Cindy” Birdsill to Modesto. Economic development requires bold vision, understanding of the needs of the city, developers and the new business that create our local jobs. Cindy has been on all sides of this equation and will bring her new calculus and ideas to jump start our local economy and to create an economic engine that will accelerate over the next few decades. Cindy, an artist and graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (BA), the University of Connecticut (JD), and Towson University (MFA), has worked as a scenic artist, a lawyer, and an economic developer, most recently in Coral Gables Florida. Her husband Jeff, is also an artist with many showings to his credit and teaches art in schools. We are very fortunate to have them here in town, so let’s meet Cindy.

Cindy and her husband, Jeff MV: I feel that we have come through some tough years and we are on the upswing, what opportunities does this present to the City of Modesto? CB: I agree, it appears the economy is on the upswing. According to the State of California’s Employment Development Department, the unemployment rate in the County was 7.6 percent in September, which was down from 8.4 percent in August, and also below last year September, which was 9.5 percent. In addition, Modesto Junior College is exploring several four year degree opportunities, including in the clinical work and specialty areas, that will help to provide workforce for the City’s growing medical sector. Development is also increasing. This provides opportunities for Modesto to train workforce and grow employment opportunities, to bring businesses to the City, and to increase entertainment and cultural offerings that will help to attract businesses and residents.

ModestoView: How did you get into Economic Development from your original artistic background? Cindy Birdsill: Well actually, I went from art and theater to law. I had the good fortune of landing at The Rouse Company as a commercial real estate development attorney for over 8 years. Rouse created one of the first planned communities in the country (Columbia, Maryland) and also was a leader in the shopping center and community shopping industry. That experience was a strong foundation for economic development, as both require a focus on the community and positive community growth. MV: What was that that made you choose Modesto? CB: I think the people. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. In addition, I really like the agricultural history and landscape surrounding the urban core. I grew up in Sylvania, Ohio, and Modesto reminds me a lot of my hometown. My husband Jeff and I feel like we are home here.

MV: How do you think your art background will benefit your job as a champion for economic development? CB: Modesto is a growing as a cultural destination. With the Gallo Center, the State Theater, the McHenry Mansion and Museum, among others - as well as the fine dining – Modesto is a destination for cultural tourism. The City also has a new Art in Public Places ordinance to encourage a diverse and culturally rich environment. In my role as the Economic & Cultural Development Director for Coral Gables, Florida, I ran the City’s programs for art in public places, cultural events, and cultural grants, and will bring B

that experience and skill set to enhancing the cultural life of Modesto. As the Americans for the Arts organization has worked to educate governments throughout the nation, culture is a distinct business sector that is important in an area’s economy. CB: I think Modesto is very aesthetically engaging. I am very impressed with the detail of the downtown architecture – from the recent façade renovation by Greens to the beautifully appointed historic McHenry mansion. The City is also unique with its mature and extensive urban forest, which I hope we will be able to continue to grow. MV: What do you think some of the low hanging fruit issues are in Modesto? CB: The recent life that has been breathed into the downtown is an exciting development for the City. More and more quality restaurants are making the downtown a place to gather and experience its pedestrian friendly environment. I think we need to continue to encourage the downtown growth as one of the City’s most prominent public spaces for its citizens. The plans for an integrated courthouse on Tenth Street will further strengthen the City’s and County’s government center. In addition, we

are seeing a growing medical sector in the City, that should be cultivated, especially with workforce support. The Stanislaus Business Alliance recently published results showing that 76% of businesses in the County plan to expand, and 77% are investing in research and development. This means we should also be supporting and growing our local businesses. MV: What have other cities that are similar to Modesto done to break out of economic hard times? CB: Cities across the Nation have struggled to recover from the economic downturn. At times like these, it is tempting to cut back on investing in infrastructure and initiatives that make the community attractive to businesses, residents, and visitors. However, to disregard these improvements can accelerate a downward spiral for the local economy if it loses its competitive edge. Luckily Modesto has retained a lot of the great bones and architectural detail of a vibrant downtown. You can see that cities like Livermore that have developed their downtown district become attractions in themselves, and are places that people want to be. MV: How important do you think arts and cultural assets are to economic development? CB: Arts and culture are becoming increasingly important for Americans to remain competitive in the global market place. We have always had the ability to innovate and bring a sense of creativity that increases value, and continuing to develop our abilities in these area will help us strengthen our economy. To do this well, we need to develop both sides of the brain from an early age through adulthood, rounding out the logical with the creative. As the leading economist Richard Florida has said, we live in a time where there is “the rise of creativity as a fundamental economic driver, and the rise of a new social class, the Creative Class,” which is a group that can include scientists, engineers, chefs, architects, designers, writers, artists or musician – any profession that involves creativity is a key factor. Experiencing arts and culture also allows us to connect and grow in a positive way, as we experience our ability to transcend, inspire, and commune. MV: How important is downtown vibrancy as it relates to city-wide economic advancement? CB: Cities and regions will need lively neighborhoods and business districts, cultural and recreational attractions, a great sense of place, protected natural areas and deep pride in local character to thrive in this century. In particular, communities need public

spaces where people can gather and interact on neutral ground. Social well-being and psychological health depend in part upon our ability to engage with our community. Having a welcoming and comforting public space on the streets of our downtown by making them more pedestrian-friendly is key. A walkable downtown shopping and dining district quickly can become a magnet for both public life and economic expansion, enriching the entire community. Most surveys show that Millennials are in large part actively seeking pedestrian friendly communities where they can walk or bike to work, to shopping and dining, and to stores and services that meet their daily needs. For Modesto to remain

competitive, it needs to become the place where businesses and people want to be. MV: Describe your perfect day? CB: A perfect day for me is one where I feel connected to my family (including my pets), to my community, to nature and allows me to enjoy an artistic expression like reading a good book, painting, playing piano, eating or cooking great fresh and healthy food, and drinking fine wine. MV: And, our signature question, Beatles or Stones? CB: Beatles. I love I’ve Got a Feeling and For You Blue.

ZEN by Mary Layton If it wasn’t for farmers planting seeds we

wouldn’t have all the beautiful almond and walnut orchards we enjoy today. And the fruits of their labor are shipped around the world. It is a big part of California’s economy, supplying jobs, livelihoods for thousands of families, these seeds planted for the generations to come. Birds and squirrels add to this bounty, their designs often hidden from our eyes and understanding. I find little walnut seedlings throughout my yard all year long. What an amazing drive of nature to preserve life! A lot of things go into planting a seed well and then raising it to its full potential. You have to have knowledge and foresight. You have to be consistent in your caring for it, make sure it has good soil, enough water and sun. Protect it from pests and weeds. And an impassioned love for the work involved is absolutely essential for growing things well. Without the drive that love engages, one would be hard pressed to keep up the discipline, responsibility and commitment growing living things requires. I believe the same is true for teachers. They also try to plant a “seed” when planning a lesson. For example: There’s a certain idea that you

want to give a student, project a specific feeling that will propel him to learn a particular thing. Without him or her noticing it you slip in that seed; it may come in the form of a question, a remark or through pointing out something. The farmer plants his seed into the soil, the teacher plants a new idea into the student: a relationship is formed from the act. Attentiveness, good timing and consistency bring good results. Like most students in the beginning of learning T’ai Chi, I also wanted to learn everything as fast as possible. It took a long time to understand that ‘fast’ was the wrong approach. Growing and learning to the new learner is such serious business. Sometimes you think you know everything when you actually barely have scratched the surface. This discovery may be discouraging to some. I found it was much better to learn things more slowly because things take better root that way. Progress is more thorough. I have been teaching T’ai Chi for the past 30 years and have seen many people come and go. A new crop of students will show up, stay for a while and leave again. But for those who stay there is the reward of improving and going to the next level. Some of those students have become teachers and so the cycle of life continues. Have you been abducted by an alien? Really, I “seen” ‘em too! There is something really cool happening here in Modesto over by MJC. There is an unusual time space warp that has created a hole in our solar system and a Portal has been created. Yes, this amazing place that by day is home to the Hope Haven West, a wonderful non-profit organization that supplies wheel chairs to people in central and south America, is by night, set to become a beacon of live music. Designed after the places like the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, the Portal has already hosted some amazing live performances. This is a cool space with interstellar relics and hypnotizing black hole nebula.

AUTHOR “Report of Separation” In honor of Veterans Day by Ken White

It’s amazing how little we know about our parents. Their hopes and dreams at the various stages of their lives. Once upon a time, my brother gave me a copy of my father’s U.S. Marine Corps Report of Separation – Form NAVMC 78-PD. It was basically his discharge papers; a snapshot of the recruit just before he transitioned back into the real world. Nicely typed out on a manual typewriter with the requisite carbon paper copy. As I scanned the document, I wondered who came up with the titles for each section and the required data for each. It listed all the usual facts: name, address, date and place of birth, race, sex, citizenry, marriage status, rank, pay grade, and serial number. Where and when he entered and exited service, and type of discharge. Then it got into more interesting territory. His RECORD OF MARINE CORPS SERVICE held the first new information for me. His military specialty was “Guard duty.” Did that mean that was what he volunteered for, what he was ordered to, what he was interested in, or what fell to him by default? His principal military duty was “Machine Gun crueman” which, I assumed, was a misspelling of crewman. Or not. I remembered him telling us that’s what he did, when he chose to talk about the service, which wasn’t often. I wondered what kind of machine gun? How many men were in the “crue”? How many men did he kill? He would never say. We never pressed. His EMPLOYMENT AND NON-SERVICE EDUCATIONAL DATA offered many additional surprises. His civilian occupation before he enlisted was “Student (H.S.).” He had enlisted at age 17 ½ before graduating from high school. His dad, Grampa Owl, accepted his diploma on graduation night. My dad had no secondary occupation listed. He had no last employer. He was a kid caught up in the patriotic fever infecting his country at the time. He and most of his buddies signed up to kill some Japs or Krauts or Wops. And that’s what they did. After he’d been in the service for a short while, Dad called one of his buddies, who I was named after, and told him to forget the Marines and join the Navy, which his friend promptly did. Under Trade Courses, nothing was listed. Under Courses of Greatest Interest was listed “Physical Ed.” Did that mean he was a jock, or that phys ed came easily? Did he want to become a PE teacher? Why does one pick PE as a course of interest? I wished I could ask him. PREFERENCES was the most revealing because it gave us a glimpse of his dreams, as well as the most frustrating because it raised so many questions. Under Preference for Additional Training, he listed “University.” I knew he had always wanted to go to college under the G.I. Bill, but marriage and a family quickly derailed that and forced him to abandon his young boy ways. He always said he wanted to be an architect, which reminded me of George Bailey in It’s a Wonderful Life and all those who lived “lives of quiet desperation,” waiting for some day to arrive when they could do all those things they had daily dreamed of doing; all those “some days” that many people never cross off their “to-do” list. In his later years, he never missed going to a local stock car or NASCAR race. And each year, he meticulously charted with pen and paper the lap-by-lap progress of the Indy 500 on the back patio, while listening to the radio perched on top of the outdoor oven in the days before TV and ABC’s Wide World of Sports coverage, which led me to wonder if he had dreams of being Parnelli Jones or A.J. Foyt or Bobby Rahal. Under Job Preference, my father listed “F.B.I.” I had never known that, or didn’t recall knowing that. What was it about the FBI that had interested him? Had he been inspired by G-Men movies? By J. Edgar Hoover and Elliot Ness taking down Capone and Nitti? Guns, I doubt it. Forensics, probably not because he didn’t like death. Investigation, perhaps, because it was a puzzle and a challenge. Maybe it was just exotic. Perhaps he was really just ready to do something as far removed as possible from Manteca and the Central Valley. As I looked at the simple document, I wondered what happened to the young man sitting in a wooden chair beside the uniformed clerk who asked him the questions and meticulously typed in his responses? What turns in life changed what he wanted to be to what he finally became? I would never know because I never asked and he was no longer here to ask. All that history died with him. Such a loss. For us all.

Each of the spellers brings their foibles and faults, skills and coping methods to the competition and the result is a hilarious look into parenting, overachieving students, and the nature of competition through the eyes of today’s youth. opened...Escape Modesto! Five of my classmates and I, along with four new friends got to experience this for the first time. For those of you who don’t know, escape rooms are essentially real life video games. They all have different themes and within the room you get to search for clues, leading to more, to find the key to get out. In “King Tut’s Tomb”, we had an hour to solve the mix of riddles before we ran out of oxygen. Each member of our group helped in some sort of way to figuring out what certain things mean. The best part about this experience is that it is extremely all age and family oriented. A lot of the time, children are more creative than adults so bringing along someone younger would come to your advantage. In life, every single person has a different way of thinking. These escape rooms help you embrace whatever you skill is and makes everyone feel like a detective. It was absolutely thrilling and the next day at school, everyone couldn’t stop talking about it. On September 19th I had the pleasure in not only being the DJ and Entertainer for the final Memorial Medical Center’s Cancer Awareness Run & Ride; but also to run this race for the last time. Or maybe not? On that day and many days after that the same question was asked in regards to. “Who will keep this one of kind Fitness Event going?” The answer was and is still the same, no one. This is why I’ve decided to help plant the idea seed here to the folks from my own fitness clubs such as The Stanislaus County Bicycle Club and The Shadow Chase Running Club, along with the 3 biggest bicycle shops in our area. I realize that coming together to work on one project can be challenging, but I’d like to invite these businesses to give this idea some thought. The benefits of keeping this event going are huge, not only from a fitness and business point of view but more importantly from a healthy

community and charitable view. I mean, why not? This run and ride event has already been established for 10 years thanks to the good folks at Memorial Medical Center. People will come! Sure it could be the same, but also different with the proceeds to help benefit our local food banks. Just like cancer, hunger doesn’t discriminate. This could mean helping to stock up our local food banks with food and recourses from a September Run and Ride just in time for the upcoming holiday season. This is one of the most exiting things to come to downtown Modesto in decades. The fun of skating is now back. Ice Skating on real ice, party space, snack shacks and so much fun. ModestoView has teamed up with Modesto On Ice so that we can celebrate the holidays with fun family activities. You can rent the party tent, book group skating and best of all, when you are done, you can walk to over a dozen restaurants, see a movie, see Rockin’ Santa and so much more. Mark your calendar! DECEMBER 5TH The Dickens Christmas Faire, the Celebration of Lights Parade, the Downtown Tree Lighting and the opening night of Modesto’s Rockin’ Holiday are all on December 5.

Friday November 6th, Doors open at 7pm, concert at 8pm Modesto Unplugged and ModestoView present a concert series “Live In The Cellar”, a monthly held beneath Greens on Tenth restaurant (953 10th St.) November brings eclectic Bay Area duo The Honeymooners, performing instrumental originals, jazz standards, and pop/rock covers with a jazzy twist. We remember and recognize those that have served and still serve today. 9 am - The Veterans Day Parade in downtown Modesto is organized by local vets to honor fellow veterans’ service to this country. The community supports this event with marching bands, classic cars and other community groups participating. Parade begins at I &10th Streets, north on I Street, left on 14th to Graceada Park for the ceremony. The parade is followed by a free lunch at the American Legion Hall on Santa Cruz Avenue.
