Now that we’re coming off this crazy political season, it’s time to put all of our collective heads together and make sure we are celebrating everything that’s positive about the place we live in. We need to focus on what we can do to make our community better. We need to energize our friends and family to help create things that improve our community. With the rains come revitalization and freshness. The winds and the storms bring in a fresh new breeze of energetic new ideas. The fall smells and colors truly invigorate. We make who we are. We create our own city and that’s why this month we are celebrating the people that make, create, invent, produce

and deliver on the things that come from our hands and share them with the community. ModestoView is special as our ViewCrew is made up of the people that actually create events and art in our area and I am so grateful for their contribution. We also can’t forget our veterans in the role that they play keeping us all collectively safe. We celebrate the talent of our local music community by launching a new MAMA record label so that their talent has a voice and we broadcast to the rest of the world. We have the excitement of Modesto On Ice, ModShop and we ramp up into Rockin’ Holidays. There are some truly magical events on the horizon. We need you to help amplify these messages, sharing on Facebook so that the rest of the world sees what we see. Most of all I am thankful for my family. I have the most amazing kids. Every day I remind myself how lucky I am to have them all in my life. My amazing wife Rebecca who puts up with all this ModestoView craziness but understands that we are creating a community that we want. I am looking forward to being a neighbor in In my new neighborhood and celebrating the daily experience that is Modesto USA. by Maryann Spikes As cold weather sets in, it is time to talk warmer options for those who sleep outside Modesto’s emergency shelters, which are geared to singles, not couples or families. Do you know of a family living on the street with children? Next time you see them, please tell them about Modesto Family Promise. Modesto Family Promise, short for Family Promise of Greater Modesto (FPoGM), is an inspired alternative to splitting up families experiencing homelessness. They have plenty of room to grow to meet demand, because they operate out of volunteer churches. FPoGM is one of 202 affiliates of Family Promise across the nation. They opened their doors in Modesto in 2005 to meet the need to provide families with a safe place to stay together while they overcome homelessness. Since 2005,

Modesto Family Promise has helped more than 200 families in the Central Valley regain their independence and overcome homelessness, and over 80% of the families served have remained in permanent housing. FPoGM is comprised of a local network of hundreds of volunteers from 14 hosting congregations who donate their houses of worship as temporary homes, as well as facilities for case management. This makes it possible to shelter families of any size and composition, including dads and teenage boys, for about one-third the cost of traditional shelters. While the network of congregations fill in each other’s gaps by partnering together to provide shelter, companionship, meals, support, and compassion on a weekly rotating basis, FPoGM case management addresses root causes and works with our community to find solutions to prevent future episodes of homelessness. “New Beginnings”, their unique financial education program, teaches basic budgeting, banking and life skills. FPoGM also provides a Rapid ReHousing security deposit and short-term rental assistance through the Emergency Solutions grant program. Their newest component, “Renter Restoration”, provides for landlord outreach and helps families with evictions reestablish a rental history.

5 Questions with Modesto’s Salacious Wizard Cult

Salacious Wizard Cult (SWC) is an anomaly among bands in the Modesto scene. While most young bands go for the loudest, the flashiest, and the hippest, this local duo opts for deliberate although quiteTechnicolor-restraint over the typical bravado. The singer-songwriting duo is comprised of beat mastermind Stephen Cowdrey and vocalist Stephanie Aderholt. The idea for the SWC originated from a daydream that Cowdrey imagined up to escape reality. Just a month after SWC released their album Cura, the nominated duo was at the MAMA’s dressed head-to-toe in disguise while moving around among the crowded press area. (Quite the contrast to their recognizable music, as evidenced by last year’s much praised performances and e.p.’s.) Filtering the angular post-hype of electronica through sultry, beat-heavy atmospherics of a contemporary sound, songs on their newly released Cura attain an otherworldly, mesmerizing rhythm - the perfect background music for a midnight seduction or nursing intense heartbreak. The album is very mature material for a pair of 20-somethings.

Wednesday night the pair took a break between college classes and performing to answer a short set of questions for me. The unusual twist being that we’ve sat down for an interview before in person when they were a trio about two years prior; now the duo specializes in personal & emotionally driven electronic music and are astonishingly ready to record more. MV: Tell us about yourself. SWC: We’re a two-piece of sad wizards. We like to make sad, personal music about our lives, our dreams, and our emotions. Our sad songs have made our shows some of the happiest moments for us and our friends. MV: The album is called Cura. What does that mean? SWC: It’s a Latin word meaning, “spiritual charge of souls.” And to us it’s a concept, the

concept of the healing process. To cure ourselves through music. MV: What inspires your music? SWC: Sadness, loneliness, betrayal, and of course, death. MV: What keeps you motivated to keep pushing the boundaries with your music? SWC: Well, it seems that electronic music seems to have a stigma that it’s supposed to be happy or dancy but we don’t feel that way. We think that any medium of music can have a feeling of whatever you want it to. We don’t feel anxious to say anything too personal on a record anymore. Love and death were definitely some of the motivating factors for our album Cura. MV: Who would you like to collaborate with & why? SWC: Kenneth Anger and David Lynch. We’d like to score. Thanks SWC! November 12 and 19 will be the first of regular twice a month Open Studio days at my house, with follow up in December on the 10th and 17th. This should keep the studio cleaned up in advance for the 2017 Stanislaus Artist Open Studio April 22 and 23. The AOS steering meeting is back in action, and I am AOS publicity person. January 15 is the final deadline to apply, with $75 entry fee, photos for the map, and directions to your studio. Studio spaces can be shared, and more information will be coming out on the Stanislaus Artist Open Studio facebook page. PERFORMANCE A Time to Perform in November By Kaye Osborn and ViewCrew Staff There are many theatrical productions in our area. The one show that I am very excited about is GCRC’s production of The Diary of Anne Frank. The last time I saw this play was at Beyer High School many years ago. The high school performers were amazing. My husband and I toured Anne’s home in Amsterdam- an incredible moving experience. The production will have a preshow discussion with dramaturge Hillari Deschane. I know many performers in the cast-all are stellar! I worked with the young girl playing Anne Frank last year in Lakewood’s musical Sleepy Hollow! I am so excited that she auditioned and earned the part. As the holiday season is upon us, I find I have less time in each day, a lil’ more stress, and a valid reason to treat myself to something I enjoy while I’m multitasking for everyone else! Stewart & Jasper Orchards Company Store conveniently located in the ever popular McHenry Village is my kind of place to do just that! Shopping, wine tasting, and free specialty food samples all in one swanky, yet cozy setting! Sure we can order specialty food products online, but we won’t be able to taste a sample beforehand, shipping costs can be expensive, and if you have to pick up your package at the post office those lines are even longer at this time of year. Stewart & Jasper is a family run business of over 65 years located in the Central Valley including Jim Jasper, his son Jason Jasper, and his 10 year old son Jake Jasper who even has his own line of flavored almonds; mesquite smoked, bloody Mary, and bleu cheese & cracked pepper! Their philosophy is to give customers the finest quality products by controlling every aspect of production, from the orchard to the marketplace, from the ground up. Besides their Modesto store, they have 3 more in Patterson, Monterey, and Newman. I had the honor of volunteering with the Salvation Army for the Community Brunch where they took 3rd place in the Dan Costa lead competition. I can tell you that this is a very hardworking group and that they are doing the most they can for the people that need their services from food assistance to after school tutoring, mentoring, teen activities and important this winter, the shelters. The best way to help is not to give to people in the streets, but to give to organizations that do the most good in the right places. The Salvation Army serves this way and you can be assured that your dollars actually go to food and shelter. We like the Salvation Army because over 85% of all funds received go directly to those in need and all are served without discrimination. As a donor, you want to funds you donate to go directly to the programs. This is a very important issue that we can help solve. You can also help support Salvation Army in other ways. VETERANS Veterans Day is November 11

We remember and recognize those that have served and still serve today. We can’t forget the sacrifices that the few make for so many. It is important to remember as we face a more complicated world and we only go into battle only when necessary that there are so many ready to serve and all of their lives are valuable. My uncle Chuck served on an aircraft carrier, my brother-in-law Danny served in the Navy and so many friends that we all know are veterans. My good friend Steve Perry served in the Navy and we feature him on our cover this month as Thanksgiving is the time of homecoming and thanks. Their stories are important to learn and their experiences can teach you a lot. Additionally, my mom’s birthday is Nov 11 so this was always a special day at our house. So let’s make sure that we are flying our flags on November 11. Originally known as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of hostilities at the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. It was renamed Veterans Day in 1954

This unique partnership between a city, county and nonprofit to support veterans has only been done in a handful of places nationwide. The new center will feature a large banquet hall, conference center, Veterans Service Office, Area Agency on Aging, and the Community Services Agency. The program will feature speeches

When Christine Capsuto starts to sing, you’re liable to forget about anything else happening around you. I first heard this stunning soprano when I first attended the superior local concert series, Sunday Afternoons At CBS, and I walked away understanding just how Odysseus must have felt while tied to the mast of his ship. Christine and her fellow singer took us on a glorious vocal tour around the world that day. (What do you call someone who belts out opera songs in English, Italian, German and Czech? A polyglottis!) Christine has performed with theater and opera companies all over the Bay Area and across the country, playing leading ladies in Chicago, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Marriage Of Figaro and more. Vocalist Rachel Garcia’s rich and nuanced style draws inspiration from everyone from Ella Fitzgerald to Fiona Apple. We have so much musical talent, so much variety and a community that is really special. It was really special to celebrate 17 years of the Modesto Area Music Awards last month. There are few cities that rival what we have in terms of music, the variety, the creativity and the flat out hard working musicianship that we see nearly every day. Our huge thanks goes out to the MAMA team that put this show together and donated their time and effort and thanks to the State Theatre. This is a treasure Modesto. We need to embrace, celebrate, support and encourage our local musicians, from the time that they start learning how to play in school band, with a music teacher to the day they do their first gig or even later, headline the Fillmore and tour the USA. All of that has happened with Modesto bands and on October 11, at the State Theatre we celebrated. Over 23 music awards were given that were chosen by the voters. The

MAMAs recognized the hardworking band Silvermoon, celebrating their 40th year. There was a moving tribute to the late Ryan Russell whom we lost too soon. We celebrated Modesto’s own music, Rockabilly, and we honored the bands of the next generation with a youth award. Randy Mandy Band performs at the 2016 MAMA, photo by Michael J Mangano When you read the headlines and hear the latest reports of Modesto it can sometimes draw a divergent sketch of what is truly a remarkable landscape of the Central Valley. Travel just a few miles outside Modesto, and you’re surrounded by Country. Farms, Ranches, communities and people who work hard, play hard

and have each other’s backs. Together on back porches or down by the river, local musicians sing about life growing up in the country. Amanda & Randy Russell, known as the Randy Mandy Band, have been making music and singing songs that reflect their surroundings. Their Folk/Rock/Country Blues style comes from the memories they’ve made in and around the back roads and bridge of Knights Ferry. “It’s fun making music in this town!”, Says Amanda. “My Grandpa used to play the banjo with the old timers, and now we’re singing and playing with the cool and unique characters of this town too. They’re the ones who help make up the storylines of our music.” Whether they’re singing at the Knights Ferry Saloon or in the music houses throughout Modesto, they strive to bring their unique stories to everyone. With Randy and Amanda on Guitar, John Montes on bass and Jordan Smallwood on Drums, they perform as much original music

as they can. “Our music tends to have a very honest and more pure sound. What you hear is who we are.” Says Amanda. “If we ever cover a song, it’s usually one that our friends have written. We love to see the look on their faces when they hear our take on their music.” It’s those friends and fellow musicians who have influenced the Randy Mandy Band’s evolution of sound, as well as Randy’s late brother Ryan Russell. “Ryan cared deeply about good, quality music,” Says Randy, “inspiring those who listened to it. He believed you need to give music room to grow. Music is a process and it takes time for the song to develop.” Randy and Amanda say they will continue to work on Ryan’s legacy of putting together an album that reflects his art and passion for local music. They are also working on more original songs of their own which they say will come together in a EP in the coming months. Music has the ability to heal, inspire, and bring us together through story and song and the Randy Mandy Band will keep adding chapters to their folktale. D.J. There is just something special about people who make things, build things, repair things and breathe life into regular objects and see the beauty of the possible. by Ken White What is happiness? That’s what a 10-year-old boy from a small California town wants to know. It’s 1958. Christmas is just around the corner. His family isn’t happy and he doesn’t know why. So he sets out to explore his home town and find out. With a little help from an elderly gentleman and a magical snow globe, he discovers that true happiness isn’t about having the most of everything, but making the most of everything you have. When his journey is finally complete, he learns that That Happiness Thing is home and family. That Happiness Thing: A Hometown Fable is my first children’s book. It will be released in November. That Happiness Thing is a bit of a hybrid, with elements of a children’s picture book and chapter book. I envision it as an illustrated short story for children and adults, similar to Nate the Great. Its look and feel is not unlike The Christmas Wish by Lori Evert and Per Breiehagen, Knuffle Bunny Free by Mo Willems, and The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg. Although I conceived and designed it as a children’s picture book aimed at 5 to 10-yearolds, the real audience is Baby Boomer parents and grandparents, who will appreciate the nostalgia and will share it with their children and grandchildren. I also see older children (8 to 10) reading it on their own. Children’s Book Events I will be appearing with illustrator Ron Wilkinson at the Carnegie Center’s Children’s Book Fair in Turlock. Ron and I will be there on Saturday, November 5th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ron will be there on Sunday, November 6th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In the last two years, we’ve given out $5000 in scholarships to deserving local students. STAGE&POETRY A&P Productions, Creating a Scene from Scratch By Summer Krafft A&P Productions, a Modesto-based film production company, is setting the bar high for film in the Central Valley. They are the award winning duo of four feature films; the two artists who make up A&P Productions are Paul Ragsdale and Angie De Alba. Of their partnership, Paul said, “A lot of people don’t have a partner when it comes to helping you make decisions. I always have her to give me backup or feedback on decisions. I think that’s very important for film, to have collaboration. You can tell how much her abilities add to a film. She helps get everything done and make it three-dimensional.” In response, Angie said, “Visually, Paul is great at writing things and I’m really great at understanding and making them come to fruition. He has a clear idea of what he wants and I have a clear understanding of how to make that a reality. The process helps complete the whole aesthetic.” Within the process, Paul is usually the pri-

mary writer, director, cameraman, and editor; whereas Angie is usually the producer, artistic director, sharing in some editing, and handles the financial aspect of getting their work done. In addition to being a creative team, the two are also a real-life couple. The pair met in school. Angie said, “We met in film school. We started off collaborating as friends, bought equipment, linked up with actors and other filmmakers, and it went from there.” Paul added, “After we left college, we were getting our life together: we didn’t start A & P until 2010, and then we started going to plays.” It was through watching local theater that the two found the actors they would come to work so closely with, and that some of their work would ultimately be influenced and inspired by. MAMA In Full Swing By Middagh Goodwin Autumn is in full swing and it is that time of year we all should reflect on what we are thankful for. I am grateful that another year for the Modesto Area Music Awards is put to bed. It was a great night filled with music and emotions. Always fun, but more work than you can imagine goes into the annual event. I for one am thrilled and thankful for what we are working on for the future. Becoming a non-profit, creating a label MAMA Records, and working to help get our local artists more exposure and opportunities to perform. The Modesto Area Music Association is going to be 18 next year and all-grown up. You will be hearing a lot more about what we have going on in the next few months. One question that comes up as far as the awards are concerned is, “How does one get nominated?” One of the easiest ways to stay on the MAMA radar is to email your events to events@modestoview.com. Not only will your

shows be put in the monthly calendar but we will be reminded of just how active you are. Make sure your social networking sites are active and up to date. Keep your event calendar updated as well. These are all good practices if you are hoping to get a mamanation or not. Make it is easy for not just your fans but prospective fans, venues, and bookers to see what you are doing and know what you are all about. Something else new for next year’s awards is the addition of the Video Award. The only requirement is that the music used is original and by an artist or band from the region. We are excited to see some amazing collaborations between bands and videographers, maybe some stop-motion animation, or something more cinematic in scope. The great thing about the video award is it is open to everyone. We are all very excited to see what you all come up with. ROCKABILLY The California 99er’s by Jennifer Allsup Ladies and Gentlemen introducing the 2016 Modesto Area Music Award Winners in the Rockabilly Category. Drum Roll Please……

California 99er’s from Oakdale Ca. The Central Valley’s Rockabilly Classic Country, Band. The perfect band for Corporate Events, County Fairs. Country Dance Events and any function that needs some great Country Music! This band has an amazing connection to our Modesto music history. As you know, Modesto is the birthplace of Rockabilly music, and this band has a direct connection to the legendary Maddox Brothers and Rose. Band member Kirby Sisco, during his acceptance speech at the 2016 MAMA Awards announced that he actually used to play with Rose Maddox. Now that is some serious music history. It happens here in Modesto. I caught up with the California 99’ers to learn a bit more. Jennifer Allsup: How did you all meet and come up with the name California 99er’s?

California 99er’s: I was hired by Dale Himes to play lead guitar and sing with the already existing band. The band is named after the 99 highway which also used to be known as the Honky-tonk highway!

JA: What is the bands future plans? To travel or stay close to the Oakdale area? C99er’s: We don’t plan on traveling; we’ll play the general Modesto area!

BLUES Turkey Time by Earl Matthews

Hello everyone! It’s turkey time and as always I am ready. Just had my knives sharpened and if anybody tries to get my wings they better be ready for a fight. Kicking things off this month is the Rob Hill Band on the 4th up in Knight’s Ferry at the 50’s Roadhouse. It’s the perfect way to start your month off with a bang, great music, good food and a trip to the foothills. On the 11th there are 3 shows worth mentioning: Turlock at the Vintage Lounge you can catch the B-4 Dawn Band serving up R&B Soul and Funk all night long. At the Barkin’ Dog you can catch Jeremy Norris and the Dangerous Mood playing some rocki’n blues. Ralston’s Goat will play host to yours truly with my man Ray Vazira of the Poorhouse Millionaires, doing our acoustic thing in the bar for your enjoyment. On Saturday the 12th Jeremy Norris will be over at Nino’s for their monthly customer appreciation party and BBQ at 2:30pm. It’s a

great time with no cover and the best free BBQ you ever tasted, just bring a dish to share. Then on the 15th is one of my alltime favorites Mr. John Mayall will be at the Crest Theater in Sac. I had the pleasure of seeing him years back and I will never forget him as long as I live. He is a legend, pure and simple. The Little Fuller Band is back at the Black Oak Casino on the 18th. I adore this band. They are talented, fun and well worth the drive. I think it is only a matter of time before these guys are on the major festival circuit. Honestly though, you should go see them. Latkes and Vodkas is coming early this year on November 19th. This annual event hosted by CBS Modesto is a super fun fundraiser for youth programs. Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame are proud to be performing again this year. It’s a dress up event and I feel like that sets this one apart from so many other shows we do. Drinks, dancing, and great food are all on offer, so let’s have a party. Have a great month and I look forward to seeing you out at a show.

ZEN Celebrating the Good Old Days (Part 1) by Mary Layton

I like to introduce you to a place in Modesto that I have grown to love very much. As a matter of fact, it was love at first sight when I came upon it for the first time in 1999, on the eve of Y2K when the world was supposed to end. This place has that certain something that makes you feel you could be anywhere in the world. It’s got the smell of wood and shellac, the smell of history and stories. So much character and atmosphere. Gives you a special feeling. And so it is that I have looked into its past. We are talking about a place in downtown Modesto, on the corner of 5th and I Street, right off the freeway. It is a place where families celebrated Christmas and enjoyed good food and drinks all year round. This place is called Dania Hall, a name given by the Danish Club who used the hall for cultural events. The Hall was built in the early 1900’s and all the members of the Danish Club (150 members) helped to build it, from scratch, including beautiful furniture, some built in. It’s a nice brick building with large windows in the front. It used to have a

mural of a cowboy swinging a whip at the side of the building facing the freeway. Starting in the 30ties the Danish Club rented the hall to its Club members on the weekends for dances and meetings. In the basement was ‘The Orchid’, a restaurant with long tables and benches and a large industrial kitchen. In the corner of the building was an independently owned business, a formidable saloon, ‘The Whip’. It was the happening place in the 50’s where people would go for a drink. Later, due to a drop in membership the building could not support itself and stood empty until the present owner purchased it, about 20 years ago. There had been many plans for the building as I found out from the owner. It was to be the Shirley Temple Museum of Dolls. But plans changed and the dolls found a home in Stanford. Dania Hall was also used for Music recitals. For almost 20 years Dania Hall has been a place for Martial Arts, teaching Kung Fu, Thai Boxing and T’ai Chi. To be continued in Part 2 in Dec. So you bike, run, swim, lift weights and maybe even jazzercise for fitness, but how about considering some Kung Fu fighting as part of your weekly workout? sure you have a grasp on how packed with events this month is going to be. Before your calendar is completely filled; plan for an outing using my favorite form of travel; the train. I am infatuated with the idea of transportation and the accessibility that it gives us to go to new places. On occasion, I ride the Amtrak train from Modesto to the Bay Area to visit friends and family. It’s an extremely unique experience and I think we as Modestans take the access to the city completely for granted. Riding from Modesto to Emeryville, I had the ability to completely immerse myself with how beautiful the central valley is. It was something out of a John Steinbeck Novel, watching the fishermen and the field workers whilst listening to the bumps of our carrier on the tracks. I was completely in love! The Amtrak Train, The San Joaquin runs all day from Sacramento to Bakersfield and has connections to Lake Tahoe, Monterey, San Francisco, Oakland and a ton of great other cities. Amtrak also provides a sign-off at each end for minors traveling alone, which is handy for young adventurers. In my opinion, a train ride is much more appealing than a car ride and ultimately is faster transportation.

Though we all know that trains by nature and purpose, are used to get you from point A to point B, Oakdale’s Dinner Train has an innovative use. The Sierra Railroad, located in Oakdale, is the third oldest railroad in North America and has been used for dining and entertaining since 1999. By going onto their website www.sierradinnertrain.com, you have access to view all of their upcoming events! This includes sunset meals, murder mystery shows and beginning in late-November, the Christmas Train! These fairly priced tickets include dinner and a great view for the entire family. This is an awesome opportunity you can’t miss out on! Tickets are very popular right now, so be sure to buy yours as much in advance as possible. Sing a Long Messiah Sunday, November 20

Ninth Annual Sing-along “Messiah” Welcomes All Singers Vocalists of all ages and abilities are invited to participate in singing one of the greatest choral pieces ever. Arias, Solos and fantastic epic choruses that are loved by millions. You can even join in on some of the classic solos. Singers of all ages and abilities are invited to participate in the ninth annual sing-along performance of G.F. Handel’s “Messiah” on Sunday, November 20. The community-wide event, which is free and open to the public, will take place at 4 p.m. at Trinity United Presbyterian Church, 1600 Carver Road in Modesto. If you have a score, please bring it as there are limited copies available. Featured soloists will include sopranos Sandra Bengochia and Duana DemusLeslie, Katie Steffanic (alto), Bruce Merchant (tenor), and Richard Colla (bass).
