The fall breezes are blowing in, and with them, they are taking time away at an amazing pace. I’m sure you, just like me are wondering where our year went? We haven’t been sitting around, but we have been going from place to place, event to event and the days slip away. With the fall, we center ourselves around family and friends and find places that are simple and we

embrace the makers who create simple hand made items and the smells of harvest food are richer than ever and those scents and sounds take us to a special place. If you can’t guess, I love this season. We all need to take time to enjoy November. Take time to connect with people and really make sure that we embrace this time all the way through Thanksgiving. We cheer those businesses that are closed on Thanksgiving and we highlight the local craftspeople and the small businesses for Black Friday and Shop Small Saturday. It is all about making Modesto and our region strong. Our local businesses need to work together and it is up to us to make sure we spend our hard earned dollars here in our town. These are our friends, and dear ModestoView readers, you are the leaders in our town to champion our local spirit. I am counting on you to spread the good word about the positive aspects of our city. We need each other and I thank the local business that support us producing this magazine each month and hope that you will check them out first when you need goods and services. You will discover cool new things here in the pages of Modesto, and we celebrate the accomplishments of our ViewCrew. Art House. Middagh Goodwin is taking the Modesto Area Music Association to a new level, Eric Benson continues to make Blue Mondays special and I can’t thank them enough for being such a great champions for local music. This is all about more than just cool stuff, it is about creating a city, a scene, a place to live. We are lucky to have friends that create events like Chris and Kim Ricci, Kate Trompetter, Ruhi Sheikh, Sam Pierstorff, Barry Day and others that make an effort to improve our city and ModestoView is proud to help support their efforts. We hope you enjoy your fall football, local school sports, the evening on the patios, the neighborhood gatherings and truly hope that you enjoy and celebrate all you are thankful for as transition into December. I hope you can come out and see play with my band Third Party at the Tom Petty Tribute show at the State Theatre on November 18 with four other amazing local bands. You will really like the show. I am most of all thankful for my wife and kids, without whom, none of this would be worth doing. Times together are irreplaceable and treasure. I am thankful for all of my friends that really make everyday worthwhile and fun. You are all so important and if I don’t thank you enough, I am truly sorry and will try to do more. Veterans Day is November 11th

By Chris Murphy We remember and recognize those that have served and still serve today. We can’t forget the

sacrifices that the few make for so many. It is important to remember as we face a more complicated world and we only go into battle only when necessary that there are so many ready to serve and all of their lives are valuable. Their stories are important to learn and their experiences can teach you a lot. So let’s make sure that we are flying our flags on November 11. Originally known as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of hostilities at the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, it was renamed Veterans Day in 1954

Here are some of the events that will mark Veterans Day.

There are many ways to help those that need it the Gardening with most during the holidays. my Son We like the Salvation Army because over 85% of all funds received go directly to those in need and all are served without discrimination. The best way to help those in need is NOT to give to people in the streets, but to give to organizations that do the most good in the right places. The Salvation Army serves this way and you can be assured that your dollars actually go to food and shelter. Giving money to those on the streets, makes the problem worse. This is a very important issue that we can help solve. You can also help support Salvation Army in other ways. You can be a bell ringer for Salvation Army by calling 209-5223209. You can do this as an individual, a family, or with a group. You can also give personal items that are needed in the shelters. As I shovel, you start to refill, one tender palmful at a time. You lean over the hole carefully to watch things fall, first the trickle of dirt, then the slow spiral of dry grass, and now the hard descent of your toys—red Legos, a plastic rake. Everything ends underground, mixing with earthworms and marbles of clay. The hole is now big enough for your evening bath. And if you could talk, I would tell you that planting trees is not as difficult as my lower back believes. Just dig wide enough for the roots to breathe. But in life, my son, remember this: do not dig your holes too deep or you might end up burying yourself.

ART Now Open By Jim Christiansen Halloween is over and the Holiday Shopping Season now open, but what a great turn out for the Trick or Treat Art Walk. Still Smoking had their Haunted House, all stops had candy, and Nadine Barrett’s spooky black light images enthralled many at Ralston’s Goat. November Art Walk is November 16. I’ll be at Ralston’s Goat this month, with a different project. Poet Gordon B. Preston sent me a poem one day, based on a drawing I did. He asked for my web site address, and sent on nine more poems based on my art. November 16, we present my original art or reasonable print version, and our new chap book of Art and Poetry, $10 each, at Ralston’s Goat. Poetry reading and artist talk included. Book title now, “Woman Nakedly Painting Flowers, Drinking Wine” 10 drawings by Jim Christiansen, 10 poems by Gordon B. Preston. Otherwise we’re gearing up for Mod Shop at the end of the month, as featured elsewhere in Modesto View. October’s end means that applications for the 2018 Stanislaus Artist Open Studio event are now full price, at $75 per participating artist. The Tour is April 7 and 8, fea-

Crow Trading includes local artists in their shop, and many or our downtown businesses hanging local art, have that art available to purchase. This is Fall art class season. The N’awlins flavors are better than ever By Chris Murphy

If you love New Orleans food like I do, you are going to love the new Bayou Menu. I have three words for you: Shrimp AND Grits. You have to feel the New Orleans thing, it is like music and it runs through you and Chef Daniel Antior is in the groove. From the holy trinity of spices he uses to the care he puts into his sauces and his key ingredients like pork, shrimp and chicken, Chef Daniel prepares your meal and it comes out like a wonderful song. Chef Daniel has really pulled the Bayou Grill and Bar in to the center of New Orleans. The Shrimp and (cheesy) Grits are absolutely to die for. The mushroom chicken is wrapped in delicious flavors and his generous use of tomatoes, okra and chiles complement each dish. This style is really a collision of tastes he explains, “New Orleans had a French and Spanish influence with the abundant produce, greens and seafood of the Mississippi Delta and the Gulf. Filé seasoning (ground Sassafras leaves) is a key American staple”. Chef Daniel has grown up in the kitchen, developing his skills as a short order cook where speed and variety is key. He then studied at the Institute of Technology Culinary School in Modesto and excelled in the traditional skills of sauté, grilling and so much more. He is a student of the spices, really understanding the role that paprika, chilé powder and cayenne pepper play in his cooking. He is naturally a pastry chef and this gives his deserts and breading a really special touch. Oh yeah, his Beignets? They are the traditional Café Du Monde recipe and should never be skipped when dining at Bayou. Some of his favorite entrees are the Blackened Prime Rib that is served with a red potato smash and greens. He features specials daily and really recommends eating the special as it is served as it is all supposed to work together. “If you want something custom, don’t order the Special”, he laughs. As our session ended, it all came back to Shrimp and Grits, my favorite New Orleans (or

southern) dish. And yes, they service fried green tomatoes, deep fried Okra, amazing Po-Boys and greens that will make any mom proud. Chef Daniel likes to keep the kitchen fun and make it all work together. He is married and has two young kids, Charlyze and Caleb and they keep his creativity up to speed. On the fun side of his menu? You should not miss the Brownie Fuzuki and Bananas Foster. As our conversation weaved around food and music, I asked our signature question, Beatles and Stones. It was Beatles all the way. It is all about the nice and smooth melodies. “I love the old rock, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chet Atkins the southern influences too and old records. I grew up playing trumpet and music is important. I couldn’t agree more. Hope to see you at Bayou Bar and Grill soon.

November Movies I met Maureen Langan back in the springtime. And by “met,” I mean she picked me to pick on during her standup routine. I had just started sporting the Amish look - the long hair & a plaid shirt. We got into a bit of banter about that. I knew then that I wanted her to be the Kelly McGillis to my Harrison Ford. When I decided to put together my very first comedy night at Moon & Sixpence, there was only one possible headliner. Maureen’s exceptional wit and honest rants on life’s absurdities make her a comedy standout. Jerry Stiller once said of her, “Maureen is to comedy what James Brown was to soul.” She knows just how to roast you as if you’d been stuffed into a Brazen Bull, and you’ll love every moment of it. With Eddie and Jess working together they had the song written within an hour. They knew right then they had something, working so well together. HellHeart wants to say thank you. Modesto Designer Pioneered Early Mechanical Voting by Lee Davis, Founder, Modesto Design Collective (MO.DE)

As we head to the polls this month, it seems only appropriate to feature a pioneering Modesto designer who invented an early 19th century voting machine. I ventured out on a chilly autumn morning to the Modesto Pioneer Cemetery to find the gravestone of celebrated Modesto architect and inventor, Julian Mourot. The stone was overgrown with weedy grass but Mourot’s legacy remains unsullied as one of our city’s most prolific designers. He was born in 1842 in Illinois and studied with a leading architectural firm there before settling in Modesto in 1879 until his death in 1928. Those familiar with Mourot’s work tend to focus on his architectural achievements, which were many. He is most recognized for his ornate and elaborate Queen Anne-style buildings, among them several Modesto business blocks, a hotel, a hospital, a school, and multiple residencies. He designed the majestic Tynan Hotel (later the State), completed in 1890 at the corner of 10th and H Street, with its iconic, ornate clock tower and Modesto’s first elevator. Mourot also designed the Stanislaus County Hospital and Almshouse in 1892 (a commission he competed for against fourteen other leading architects across California, a testament to his creativity and skill). Sadly, all of Mourot’s Modesto buildings have been demolished. Only a landmark residence he designed for a surgeon (from Modesto) in Pacific Grove remains. Beyond being an accomplished architect,

Mourot was also a prolific inventor. In 1893, he filed a patent for an innovative “Voting Machine.” His detailed description indicates a complex engineering mind highly aware of the voting zeitgeist of the late 19th century. His mechanized secret ballot system employed a series of “pitmen” enabling the voter to depress them and thus cast a vote, and then locking to prevent any further operation until the voter left the booth and another entered. A movable floor mounted upon returning springs enabled the machine for voting when a voter stepped on it. The machine had an intricate series of rotating drums that turned and advanced paper rolls with a voter’s selection, thereby maintaining secrecy, while automatically counting both the number of votes and the number of voters. It’s uncertain whether Mourot’s invention was ever realized. He’s not cited in any histories of voting technology. But what is most impressive about his invention is the timing. The concept of “secret ballot” voting was only introduced in 1888 in the United States after the widespread fraud reported in the contentious presidential election of 1884. In 1892, the first mechanical levervoting machine was introduced to reduce the risk of dishonest vote counting. Mourot’s patent, filed only a year later, represented truly cutting edge technology. While duplicitous politicians continue to make false and already debunked claims of massive voter fraud in California and across the country, we can celebrate our local design ancestor who pioneered early voting technology to protect our most fundamental democratic right. INTER I love reading, I love history, and I love curiosity. The written word is the key to the door to knowledge and insight to the world and it is a great gift for people to be able to craft a story, communicate a concept and make it engaging for people to read. There is a reason why so many people are on a quest to write the great American novel, be they the next Kerouac, Hemingway or to blaze a completely new trail. What is really fascinating are those authors that are able to take a piece of history, and make it into a great story that engages. The key to this is finding history exciting. Ken White is one of those people. Ken has made a career out of writing here in Modesto and has novels, screenplays, stage plays, and corporate work, as well as teaching, in his portfolio. As a Davis High grad in the late 60s, he studied at UC Davis and San Francisco State in the 70’s where he earned his M.A. in Educational Technology. He comes from a musical family. His late brother Wendell and sister-in-law Penny were in many bands and his sister Sammy is a MAMA-winning musician. Her husband Scott and children Jackson and Lauren are also musicians. Ken is in a band, the P.Rodells, along with his sister, Deb, a member of the Sensations, and his best friend’s son, David Rogers, drummer for Patty Castillo Davis, and grandson, Zyan and family friend Courtney Considine. Ken was a huge help in the content creation and editing of the Modesto Historic Cruise Route and he is also our “Author Emeritus” for ModestoView magazine. I was proud to be able to contribute a chapter in Ken’s new book, the Life and Times Modesto. Let’s get to know Ken White and I hope you like this new book. ModestoView: Why is the written word so special? Ken White: “The world is made up of stories, not atoms.” – Muriel Rukeyser, Poet It’s all about telling a story that connects and moves people. The physical act of putting pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard. We’ve been communicating with symbols since the caveman scrawled images on a cave wall. We still are. Words open worlds. They allow us to travel to distant lands, learn interesting and valuable things, share what we’re passionate about, and perhaps become somebody else or look through someone else’s eyes for a moment or two.

MV: What about growing up in Modesto influenced you today? KW: It’s always been the people. I still have friends I’ve known since kindergarten. When I tell people that who aren’t from here, they’re thunderstruck because they’ve never had that. It’s also the place. There’s something magical about California and the Valley. I know I’m almost home as soon as the plane crosses the border or I coast down the Altamont. MV: Do you believe that historical knowledge about one’s city creates a sense of civic pride? KW: Absolutely. Modesto has an incredibly rich history that we should be proud of. A lot of firsts have been accomplished here. Some pretty amazing and accomplished people have called – and call – it home. I continue to discover things about this city I never knew. MV: You have made a career out of writing. Is this a lost art or are there still opportuni-

ties for the up and coming student? KW: There will always be a need for written communication. The delivery system may change, but the process will not. Writing and speaking are two very different ways of communicating. Each uses different parts of the brain and body. Every human endeavor needs written communication and documentation, whether it’s writing a simple thank-you note or crafting a comprehensive annual report. And now there are more opportunities than ever for people to tell their unique stories, whether it’s through self-publishing, blogging, social media, gaming, writing songs, stage plays, webisodes, or whatever the next “big thing” will be. The reality is, we have an active, thriving community of local writers and publishers in all media. If it’s something that speaks to you, pursue it. MV: It’s always said, that the more you travel and experience the world, you appreciate the Modesto experience more? Would you agree? KW: I’ve traveled quite a bit. I enjoy meeting

other people and experiencing other cultures. But, I can’t wait to return home to the familiar; to the ever-present past; to a place that encourages and supports the arts and creative people; to a community. MV: Your novel, Getaway Day, combined so many things that we love, baseball, Modesto and a nice time in history that is good to write about. What did you like best about this book? KW: Resurrecting memories and sharing them. I call the book’s style “fictional memoir.” That’s because it combines real events and people with fictional events and people, very much in the style of “Ragtime” and other historical novels. At one point, the publisher asked me to cut out all the “personal stuff.” I told him that was the whole point. I wanted to share that with the other “baby boomers” who grew up in that time, as well as with their children and grandchildren who might want to know more about what helped shape them. Plus, it was an opportunity to create and preserve a shared history and legacy for my family, as well as to pay tribute to the men who influenced my life – my father, my coaches, and my teachers. It saddened me that my youngest brother, Wendell, passed away without having a chance to read the book. I’m working on a sequel tentatively entitled “Beautiful Day,” which follows the same characters in 1969. Instead of using baseball as the unifying thread, this book will use music. MV: Your new book Touchstones: Life and Times of Modesto is really going to be a milestone book. What made you want to do it? KW: I was asked to write it by Gwen Larsen, Susan Belt-Highiet, and Lois Belt, who are part of Press and Publications with the McHenry Museum & Historical Society. I agreed because it was time to update our city’s history and to counter the negative publicity we’ve received in recent years. But, I didn’t want to just write another history book because that had been done and done well. I wanted to capture Modesto as it is now which, when published, would become the most recent history of our town. MV: What was something you learned new from doing this book? KW: How many incredible people have lived and worked here and how much they’ve done. Plus, it allowed me to connect with a number of local individuals and organizations I had known about and respected, but never had an opportunity to meet or work with. MV: You and I share a love for the history of this city; what is a story that needs to be more well-known?

MV: When will the book be available and don’t you think everyone needs to give this as a gift this holiday season? KW: The book is scheduled to be out the first week of November. It will cost $40 and will be available at the McHenry Museum store. We will also be setting up a website to handle on-line purchases. All sales will benefit the Museum. There’s no better gift to give than the gift of history and civic pride. We will be hosting a book release party on December 14th at the Museum, which will be open to the public. I will also be selling and signing books at the Dickens Fair and Barnes & Noble on December

KW: The story of the Native American, Estanislao, after whom the county was named. He is reputed to be the only American Indian leader never defeated in battle and may have been the inspiration for the fictional character, Zorro. The Maddox Brothers and Sister Rose, which taps into our musical heritage and the birth of rockabilly. The career of Royal Robbins, who was a world-renowned mountain climber and entrepreneur. I’m actually working on stage plays about Estanislao and Royal. I will also be publishing my second children’s Christmas book this month. The “12 Days of Central Valley Christmas” continues to celebrate the uniqueness of where we live.

MV: What does our community need to do to make sure we celebrate our history? KW: Events and offerings like the Modesto Cruise Route and the Modesto Architecture Festival that are entertaining and informative. Support for, and promotion of, historical jewels like the McHenry Mansion and McHenry Museum. New museums dedicated to the Gallo Winery and George Lucas. A Graffiti Film Festival. Mentoring students of all ages and sharing with them the richness of our heritage, which may ignite in them a love of their community and its history.

There is something special about this time of year. We are experiencing a wonderful harvest, pumpkin patches, corn mazes and the tastiest treats at our local farmer’s markets. But as we go into the fall, we are thinking about the people that create, make and invent. The holidays are not that far away so it is not too late to get really creative and dive in to our local area makers. You may not dive in, but you may crash into some local makers like our own Tasha Williams did when she met up with the creative folks from ModShop. Friends, these people are what make the Greater Modesto Area (Stanislaus County) so special.

We celebrate their ideas and handiwork and hope you like your tour.

ModShop: A Creative Dream (Or Not)? Brace yourself folks! For some of you, the story I am going to share,

may be difficult for you tobelieve. But all of it, every word, and with each keystroke that leaves my fingertips – TELL A TRUE STORY! I have been continuously riding my bicycle since August. During that month, I took you and a few other Positive Peeps, on a ModestoView, “Tour de Food” joyride, all throughout town! Since then, I have been bicycle riding everywhere! I rode my bike through Queen Bean to grab a coffee. I breezed past Fuzio, only stopping to nibble on a Firecracker Appetizer. I slowed down briefly, for one Baklava bite at Papachino’s. I stuffed my face like nobody’s business at Luigi’s Pizza. Even with all that biking through town, still, I kept on riding. I just couldn’t seem to stop myself! Simply put, it was clear: I was turning into the female version of Forrest Gump, except – I WAS ON TWO WHEELS! I just kept riding and riding and riding! I ended up at the Riverbank Wine and Cheese Festival. My music was playing through my ear buds and I was singing loudly, as the Stylistics crooned, “People Make the World Go Round.” (I still don’t know if I jam to that song because I love “people” or because I love that my “bicycle wheels” go round). At any rate, I digress. . . . I had gotten lost in the music and I was riding at an unstoppable speed, enjoying every gust of wind that swept by my face. Then, in a flash, and as if out of nowhere, I looked up and saw a sign that said: ModShop Handmade Market. For a brief moment, I thought to myself, “I wonder what The ModShop is?” But it was too late! My speed was undeniable and I could not be stopped! As my bicycle and I frantically rode through the crowd, I was screaming out to all within my view, warning the crowd, “Look out!” and “Get out of the way!” and “I can’t stop!” Right then and there, wouldn’t ya know it? BOOM! I had finally come to a halt - A SCREECHING HALT! However, it wasn’t my brakes that that stopped me, it was a brick wall! The hit was so intense, that it almost knocked my teeth out! And let me tell ya, you’d have to see my pearly whites in person, to understand the devastation I would have felt in losing even one! But again, I digress. . . . . I crashed hard and I must have passed clean out, because when I came to, an Angel-like, exquisite beauty, was standing directly above me. She had cocoa skin with long black hair and it turns out, it was she, (Ruhi Sheikh, along with her two friends, Kate Trompetter and Tricia Rosenow, who started the ModShop 5 years ago). Back then, there were only 45 vendors, with the number steadily increasing up to 100 vendors now!

I could not wrap my head around the immaculate ModShop Scene that was now surrounding me on all sides! When Ruhi helped me up, she was so softspoken and kind, that I felt as if I had floated back into a standing position and landed on a soft cloud, instead of the hot concrete that was really below my feet. She had a gentle way about herself as she began telling me all about the crafters and magic makers that were everywhere in the ModShop! She explained how November was an excellent month for people to come and check out the handmade pieces that had been crafted locally, by each individual artists. Ruhi went on to say, that during their events, the vibe was just different. “It is simply a positive place for people come and have fun in a kind of “bustling night out,” she said. Eventually, I was on my own because whimsically, I had floated off and gotten lost inside the magical wonders of The ModShop! This was definitely my kind of scene! There were booths everywhere that had people displaying a variety of original items! There was beauty, as well as creativity, in every direction in which I glanced! I was among the coolest, craziest, and most artsy people I had seen in years!

BLUES Fall In Full Swing Hello everybody Fall is in full swing and we are gearing up for the holidays. This month I am trying something new and I hope you will come down and check it out. Starting on November 1st and again on the 15th, I’m putting on a show that we are calling Poorhouse Millionaires and Friends. My MAMA Awardwinning girlfriend Felicia Aleman will host and do her comedy then we will bring in a surprise guest to kick off the show followed by a couple sets from the Poorhouse Millionaires. Its going to be a fun show with surprises every time. You can expect to see us the first and third Wednesdays of each month. Two great options on the 11th. First, you can check out AC Miles from Fresno up at Black Oak Casino. For those of us wanting to stay closer to home check out the Funky Blues Band at the Hot Rod Dinner in Ceres. The Funky Blues Band is a brand new act with some great well-seasoned musicians, make sure to check them out. THey will be back at The Hot Rod Dinner on the 25th as well. COMEDY Hello, hello, hello by Felicia Aleman It’s November and time to be thankful. I’m thankful for winning the MAMA award. After only a year and a half into comedy, it was quite an honor to be nominated and surprising to win. The other nominees are more experienced and have all been supportive in booking and encouraging me. Sounds sappy, but it’s hard to express how much this has meant to me. So as it is with meeting any milestone, now the real work begins… INTERVIEW: This month I talk to 209 comic and two-time MAMA Award winner Jimmie Menezes. Jimmie has been active in the local comedy scene for six years and has produced shows throughout the 209 including the BrewHaHa at the former Hero’s and for the last year has run a monthly comedy show at the Outpost Saloon (last Wednesday of every month). Jimmie has also been my mentor--my first open mic and first show were his productions. Since then we have hit the road together going to open mics and performing whenever possible. We talk about how to get a MAMA win (spoiler alert: promotion, cross-promotion and more promotion), putting on shows and being on the road. The video will be available on my

If you are a Geek you are very lucky to be living not just in this era where so many cool Movies and TV shows are being made, but in the 209 where we are fortunate to have so many Conventions happening in our own backyard. November 4th and 5th take the short drive to enjoy the Tracy Comic Show at Northgate Village 1005 E Pescadero Ave, Tracy. Ticket price is very reasonable only $13 adults for the weekend kids $8 for a weekend pass. Meet Kevin Easton creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Margaret Kerry the original model for Tinkerbell, Voice Actress Kathy Garver and more. Remember your ticket also gets you into the Tracy Reptile Expo. With all cons, there will be tons of Vendors

and Artists to check out and cosplayers galore. You can get pictures with the 501st, Rebel Legion and Wolves of Mandalore(Star Wars Fan Groups), the Bay Area Ghostbusters. Oh, and yes there will be a Cosplay Contest this year hosted by the NorCal Cosies. So dress up in your best costume and come on out. Proceeds will once again go to Make-a-Wish, last year they raised $5850 and they hope to raise as much or more again this year. Ohana Con the family that brought us Turlock Comic-Con has been super busy this year producing Cons all over NorCal. On November 19th they will be returning to the Foothills for Sonora Con at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds. Tickets are $5 and kids under 12 are FREE. Expect lots of geeky and comic vendors, artists and cosplayers. NorCal Cosies will be there once again hosting the Cosplay Contest. A ton of fun packed into a little con. FIT You Should Be Running by Efren Martinez Jack Frost has returned and the holidays are here and with them will be the additional weight we tend to put on between October and February. Studies have shown that mostly all of us tend to eat more during the winter when it’s cold verses the summer. Why? When it’s hot, we tend to want to eat less only because our appetite shrinks do to the fact that our bodies have to work harder to keep cool while digesting a big meal. However, in the winter, food is like a warm comfort blanket and our body spends the needed energy to process our meals thus helps bring our core temperature up. It also helps with the fat we layer on our bodies to keep us warm such as a bear in the wilderness to help with hibernation warmth. But we aren’t bears, nor do we hibernate. In fact during the winter we tend to be a lot busier than any other time of the year because of the holidays. Let’s face it, for most of us food is everywhere and time is short so it’s easier to jump in that fast food line while you are out shopping

instead of coming home to cook a healthy meal for your family afterwards. Here’s the skinny! RUN! During the summer it can be extremely challenging to run in the heat, not to mention sometimes dangerous. Personally I’ve found that running in the fall and winter is the best time of the year. My perfect running weather temperature would be in the mid 50’s. In fact, the cooler it is, the faster I am. As I run in the winter, I find that my body tends to want to run faster and go farther in order to keep up my core temperature. It’s actually enjoyable for me. But knowing when to stop is the key. 3,6,8,13 miles, no mater what you run, look for signs of the chill factor setting in. Once you are no longer able to keep your core temperature comfortable, it’s time to go from a run to a cool down walk. At this time you should start to add on layers of clothing like sweats, a beanie, gloves and so on. But wait! Don’t add it on to quickly, wait for the signs that come from your own bodies natural chemistry. One that I look for is to notice when the steam stops radiating from my skin from how hot I am from running, that’s when I start to layer up. Make no mistake that winter can be the best time of

GO MODESTO Sing a Long Messiah Sunday, November 19

10th Annual Sing-along “Messiah” Welcomes All Singers Vocalists of all ages and abilities are invited to participate in singing one of the greatest choral pieces ever featuring arias, solos and fantastic epic choruses that are loved by millions. You can even join in on some of the classic solos. Singers of all ages and abilities are invited to participate in the ninth annual sing-along performance of G.F. Handel’s “Messiah”. The communitywide event, which is free and open to the public, will take place at 4 p.m. at Trinity United Presbyterian Church, 1600 Carver Road in Modesto. Here Comes the Sun by Leia Johnson

At five years old, ‘Here Comes the Sun’ was my favorite song. As all do, I grew and changed, but my love for The Beatles was firm. Last Spring, I took the Modesto Junior College class regarding the history of the British group. ‘The Music of The Beatles’ covers the magnitude of the fab four’s influence, from albums, movies, groundbreaking projects and musicians today. Steve Grubbs, the professor of the class, uses every platform to conduct his teaching. He would play the original recording of a song, then show it with post-production, and hop over to the piano to break down the musicianship of the song. After understanding the notes, he would tell us who composed it and the meaning of symbolism in the song. Of course, we didn’t have to do that with all 237 songs, a lot of class time is dedicated to their influences in fashion and world politics.

This class meets Wednesday nights from 6-9 January 8th - April 28th and is highschool, college and adult friendly. If you’re in highschool, the class is free, so I highly suggest taking this great opportunity to see what a college class is like. It is also transferable in the UC and CSU systems. You must register this month on mjc.edu website using the section name, MMUSG-112-4196. This was such a wonderful experience for me. It’s not a rigorous amount of work, so it’s ideal for working adults and most students. The professor is phenomenal and having taken the class, I have an abundance of knowledge about my favorite band! Apply Now! We may find out that we are good leaders, or good followers or that we can be incredibly nice and helpful or maybe we are resourceful and a fast thinker. Under pressure we get real. We do what has to be done. Say or give what we have been holding back. I had a chance to experience this during the Northridge Earthquake in 1994. I was amazed at how the whole neighborhood came together to help each other. Hearing the many stories in connection to the recent fires in our state we are moved by the outpouring of love and support. We find out how precious everyone truly is. It is what gives me hope.
