I love the feeling of Thanksgiving. That warm home and family feeling. I really don’t care about any of the shopping things, and really, I draw a line at Christmas coming out before Thanksgiving. Call me traditional, but that weekend after Thanksgiving is when the tree goes up and our family gets out the Wally World glasses and we have eggnog and watch Christmas Vacation. Yep, those times are as good as it gets and now with all of the kids here in Modesto, it’s even better. I hope you have your favorite traditions as well. The colors are so vivid. I love to ride my bike around town and see the amazing colors in Modesto. We really do have 4 seasons here and when the leaves of the giant trees in our established neighborhoods turn, it is nothing short of a color show. At the end of the month, when families are running the Turkey Trot along the Tuolumne River, we have a beautiful transition to winter it is truly beautiful and amazing how this month really has a transition, much like our new issue this month. Our old printer shut down, falling victim to declining newspaper business, which is sad. Magazines like ModestoView are growing across the USA because we are
Celebrating Our

So, we chose a new printer that has better technology, and when other magazines and papers are cutting back, we are putting our foot on the gas with this new trimmed and stitched format and offer even more distribution. We are working hard to grow ModestoView, so we can continue to Serve Civic Pride Daily. We are so glad you are here and thanks for being such loyal readers. Of course, you can read the View online and we have a mobile ap and our market-leading Facebook, Instagram and Twitter programs are awesome, but I still love the feel of a printed paper in my hands and we are glad you do too. But I am super fired up for more reasons. Why you ask? Rockin Holiday is coming up and we have exciting plans with the amazing Rockin’ Tree, the Rockin’ North Pole and our downtown Rockin’ Snow season. It all begins December 1 so we are previewing it this month. Also, it is ModShop season and this is one of our favorite weekends and I get almost all of my holiday shopping done on one night
with locally made goods. We preview some of these in this issue. And most of all, it is the 30th year Anniversary celebration for my company Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group. Founded in 1988 by my father in law Mike McNulty and Roy Atkins, we have grown the company over the last 30 years, with a fantastic team of employees, serving clients all over the world. We are proud to be a family owned local business, as is our ModestoView. We believe in giving back to the community and leaving every thing we are involved with, better than when we got there. That giving spirit is what makes our community special and I am so grateful for the other local companies that do the same. This is a time for Thanksgiving in so many ways. I wish happiness and togetherness for you, your family and friends. Our friends and family are the most important things we have. Enjoy this time. NOVEMBER 11th
We remember and recognize those that have served and still serve today. We can’t forget the sacrifices that the few make for so many. It is important to remember as we face a more complicated world and we only go into battle only when necessary that there are so many ready to serve and all of their lives are valuable. Their stories are important to learn and their experiences can teach you a lot. So let’s make sure that we are flying our flags on November 11. Originally known as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of hostilities at the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, it was renamed Veterans Day in 1954
Here are some of the events that will mark Veterans Day: 9:30 am - The Veterans Day Parade begins at 10th and O, and proceeds down Needham to Graceada Park. There will be a program at Graceada Park in Mancini Bowl at 10:45 AM. The parade and program in the park are organized by local veterans honoring and remembering veterans and active duty military. The parade will include military vehicles, marching bands, classic cars and Grand Marshals. The family friendly program at Graceada Park will include tunes by the MJC Band, patriotic speeches by local leaders, and a 21-gun salute and taps on the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th day. ModestoView, ModestoNews and KAT Country 103 will be there announcing

THANKSGIVINGVIEW By Chris Murphy
There are many ways to help those that need it the most during the holidays. We like the Salvation Army because over 85% of all funds received go directly to those in need and all are served without discrimination. The best way to help those in need is NOT to give to people in the streets, but to give to organizations that do the most good in the right places. The Salvation Army serves this way and you can be assured that your dollars actually go to food and shelter. This is a very important issue that we can help solve. You can also help support Salvation Army in other ways. You can be a bell ringer for Salvation Army by calling 209522-3209. You can do this as an individual, a family, or with a group. You can also give personal items that are needed in the shelters. Donations can be taken to 320 9th St or 625 I St. Items needed are: toiletries, bedding, underwear & socks.

Hundreds of children in our area enter foster care every year with just the clothes on their back or a few belongings in a garbage bag. In collaboration with Child Protective Services, Love Modesto has developed Comfort Kits (quality bags with many
useful items) for children who have just been uprooted from their family. In order to meet the need, we need 1,000 Comfort Kits. The average retail costs for each kit is $50-70, but we can purchase items in bulk at around $40/kit. Here’s how you can help: 1) Donate Comfort Kits. If you would like to donate, Love Modesto needs receive all financial donations by November 10. Or you can shop for Comfort Kits on your own. 2) On December 1 (8:30-11:30am), can you volunteer at the Christmas Comfort Kit Drive. Your help would be greatly appreciated. ART VIEW 11th Anniversary by Jim Christiansen This edition of Modesto View Art View is
my 11th anniversary of joining the in-print edition of Modesto View, usually page 7, at the invitation of my friend, visual artist and musician Chris Murphy. This past Art Walk was great, and though officially no Third Thursday, your usual Art Walk venues ignoring that and practicing something known as Guerilla Art. Usual venues will be open, or not, as we’ve had a year around 3rd Thursday schedule over 20 years now, where Third Thursday is the thing. Art Night, so either Henrietta Sparkman or Charles Jeffrey Newberry will be the featured artist at Barking Dog. The current cowboy related them by Carol David, much of it in encaustic crayon, featured this month, after featuring Escalon born, International artist David E. Webster put up one of his well-traveled installations. Tri-Chromatic gallery, even Chartreuse Muse and Mistlin Galleries do performance art. I’m the founder of The Graceada Park Performance Art Project started in Modesto, where I focused on the great players of Modesto, and those unknown accomplished greats from my schools and University of California Riverside greats, I know as W.I.D., Worms in Disguise, that extends to some friends you may not know I have known all my life. This extends to my secret hobby in math and cosmological physics from Art History studies at UCR, in the thread of Leonardo and Michelangelo. Some people in LA area who know me well, wondered why I quit playing music and recording, as some friends here wondered why I’m manically practicing guitars, banjo, piano and tuning. Even professional musicians, artists and writers, have other hobbies, interests and family issues like my
mental health crash following some legal issues, depression, and severe health problems. I’ve had all of them, and art therapy, music therapy, and writing, getting your truth out there, so you’ll contact the friends I know, will get you out of your milieu of Modesto and find confirmations of what else I do, as I promote the great creative scene I found here in Modesto. For other guys in recovery with my cat Sam’s and my condition, is my long time associate Jullie Cox’s father’s issue, stroke, or similar cerebral hemorrhage condition. Chris Murphy’s recent heart issues, similar to my mother’s AFIB condition. Russ Owens has my father’s challenge, 30 years after some improvements made. Brian Friend after walking with me during the Heart Walk Modesto View sponsored, had heart surgery, is back up and working. So the sudden change when you make a breakthrough is exhilarating, somewhat hard for your own family at times to get used to. I’m lucky, 30 years later, I can play instruments again. Chris’ back in the pink. Big Earl’s looking great. Shad Harris knows what I’ve been through. Thanks to being on a Modesto View crew who really do the drill, understand how your best bet is play through it as best you can. I’m the crew leader and event coordinator for the Riverdance Farms Pick and Gather, with ranch owners Bill Thompson and Cindy Lashbrook, and like Strawberry; we added a second festival on our calendar. November 3 and 4. I’ve booked myself on our shade house stage as a way to get used to face an audience, and try that out, with a stage crew of primarily left handed players rarely seen to play for awhile and getting our tools out, that complement our visual arts. Please come join us. I recently explained some of the illusion tricks of the Tresetti’s mural, who is actually who, and who just a generic character, and

THURS how the illusions work. The woman I didn’t know I knew, who I got the eyes wrong, and changed after she left, not knowing who I was, is Kim Ricci. Tresestti’s never told her, she figured it out working with me on Art Walk. The ongoing sharpie drawings at Barkin Dog, adds more than just my drawings, but include Sarah’s sketches, that of our Publisher Chris Murphy, who when we draw the bands, side by side, uses my paper, one of my pens to do his way, me, my way, of the same song and band in set. Mark Navarro is the other artist with a napkin drawing similar to Van Gogh Starry night. We progress as we add more of our drawings at Barkin Dog, including not players, but the audience, staff, while the music playing. I’m a cartoonist. November’s Arts Lecture will include a presentation and book signing by photographer Roman Loranc called Traces,a life-long photographic exploration of tules and reeds from the marshlands and mountains of Poland to the wetlands of the Merced National Wildlife Refuge. Loranc’s work is exhilarating, blending real-life glimpses of nature’s simplicity in dance, geometry and music. The poems of Robert Lux are mirrors for dozens of magical photographs. Modesto Cardboard Challenge: Inspiring Youth Creativity
by Lee Davis, Founder, Modesto Design Collective (MO.DE) In 2012, the short film Caine’s Arcade
was released about a 9-year old boy, Caine Monroy, who spent his summer vacation building an elaborate arcade out of cardboard in his dad’s used auto parts store in East Los Angeles. The film (which was also featured and selected as the Audience Favorite during the MADWEEK Architecture & Design Film Night at the State Theatre on September 21st) focuses on Caine’s dream of having customers play in his cardboard arcade. It became a global phenomenon, with over 10 million views online, and tens-of-thousands of customers visited Caine’s Arcade to play. Shortly after the film’s release, the director founded a nonprofit to launch a Global Cardboard Challenge to foster kid creativity worldwide. There are thousands of creative kids just like Caine Monroy here in our own community. This was confirmed for us on Saturday, September 22nd when we hosted Modesto’s inaugural MADWEEK Cardboard Challenge & Day of Creative Play during the farmer’s market on the green outside of the Stanislaus County Library. The response was overwhelming. Hundreds of families and kids of all ages engaged in creative play through fun and exciting games and activities. At the heart of the day was the Cardboard Challenge, an opportunity for kids to build whatever they could dream up using cardboard, recycled materials and imagination. We were delighted to see the creative energy and talent of our young people and we’re excited to celebrate this month the winners of the 2018 MADWEEK Cardboard Challenge: FIRST PRIZE winner: Bennett Vickery – who created a mechanized arcade game
SECOND PRIZE winners: Yuushi Kennedy & Maddax Nielsen – who co-created a flying dinosaur THIRD PRIZE winner: Selah Chen – who created a miniature theater with a secret village on stage. Honorable mentions also went to: Lucy Daniels; Lila Garcia-Singh; Katelynn Geier; Kinsley & Kayce Miller; Audrina Yang; and Liam List for their amazing creative entrees! 2018 MADWEEK is especially grateful to Pacific Southwest Container (PSC) for the generous in-kind donation of cardboard materials; the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) - California Sierra Chapter for it’s financial and in-kind support of the event, and to the Modesto Art Museum, the Modesto Design Collective (MO.DE), and the American Institute of Architects Sierra Valley (AIASV) and our Challenge judges: Chad Kennedy, Barrett Lipomi, Jessica Ringer, Brian Schardt, and Amy Vickery. Creative problem-solving is one of the most important core skills for young people no matter where their interests lie, and no matter what educational and/or professional path they pursue. Creativity is a core social value and a critical skill every child should be encouraged to develop. Kid’s innate creativity, curiosity and passion needs to be nurtured at home, in school and by the community, so that more kids in Modesto like Bennett, Yuushi, Maddax and Selah can develop their skills and talents as creative thinkers and doers. The Trifecta Is Complete at St. Stans
By Brandilyn Brown
We know what it takes to make a memo-
rable water hole: good beer, good service, and good food. That trifecta is complete at the St. Stan’s taproom with their new pub food launch. They’ve had brick oven pizzas since day 1, but along with their mouth-watering pizzas they now serve up calzones (try the Spicy Monkey, it’s fantastic), gourmet sausages (individually or in a sharable sample platter), caprese salad, pizza-sized pretzels with beer cheese, and they even have dessert covered: churro donuts with house-made cinnamon whipped cream. Divine! We guarantee you’ll love pairing these new plates with their live music, Geeks Who Drink Thursdays and their Tournament Tuesdays. Tournament Tuesdays are a free-for-all. You show up with your buddies any time after 7pm and play a game you brought or pull one from the shelf. (Cards Against Humanity is a popular choice.) Prizes are awarded per table, and are various swag items and coupons for one penny pints. Geeks Who Drinks Thursdays are from 7pm to 9pm, and there are 8 rounds
Soup is Stewing this Season!
FOOD BITS
By Jessica L. Sule & Mick V. Rubalcava
Now that the cooler weather has
arrived, hot soup season is upon us! We went around town to taste a few of our local favorites that we have been eagerly anticipating. Mocha Magic has a dedicated soup season which has now begun. We treated ourselves to their Taco Chicken soup. The Taco Chicken has a thick, tomato base and is loaded with chicken, beans, tomatoes, and corn and is finished off with a pile of shredded cheese and tortilla strips. It was quite mild but very flavorful. Papachinos serves a popular White Bean soup all year long, but we tried a seasonal specialPumpkin soup! This time they made the soup vegan with a broth base and tons of warm winter flavors like cumin and garam masala. It had a thin purée consistency that was very rich and satisfying. Fuzio’s year-round offering of Clam Chowder on the weekends is even more mouth-watering in this weather! This clam chowder is chunky and hearty- well seasoned with herbs, red potatoes, celery, carrots, clams, and bacon, rivaling other soups of the same name. Another local favorite who serves many soups year-round is Chefs of New York. We indulged in their Pasta Fagioli, which

of the game in which to score points for your team. Prizes are awarded throughout the game like coupons for $3 off your tab. Also new is their gluten-free cauliflower pizza crust which is super delicious! Vegan and vegetarian pizza options are available as well. Coming soon is a beer club, where your rewards for loyalty will be cheaper pints, growler refills, and special VIP nights where you can try new beer before anyone else. is a heavier broth soup with garbanzo, cannellini, and kidney beans with pasta, tomatoes, and fresh herbs. This soup is great as a stand-alone dish or as a side accompanying an entree. One stew that is definitely an entree of its own is Sabatino’s Cioppino. This indulgent fish stew has a savory tomato-based broth and is overflowing with fresh swordfish, sea bass, Dungeness crab, shrimp, clams, mussels, and oysters with Italian seasoning. We asked the ModestoNews.com audience for soup suggestions. Local viewers Theresa Jones Nicolls and Jewel Kee recommended The Velvet Grill & Creamery as their go-to for a great soup selection year-round. Margarita Avila Lundberg loves the Tomato soup from Picasso’s. Diana Hess Mitchell said, “I adore the Tom Kha Kai at the Thailand Restaurant.” Christina Day and Cande Gaxiola both love the soups at Dewz. See more suggestions by local soup lovers on the ModestoNews.com Facebook page and go get some soup!

keto diet over the summer, after a friend got me curious about it. High fat, no bread, no sugar. It works! But everything is upside down when you’re on this diet. For instance, you have to take the gun and leave the cannoli. It’s unnatural, I tell you. Keto wasn’t the only thing that left me longing for the culture of Italy in recent months. At my annual visit to one of my favorite acoustic festivals, I discovered an incredible new act called PizziCali. This quartet is a beautiful marriage of friendship and musicianship, combining guitar, percussion, strings & vocals into a lively and earthy sound. Spend an afternoon with them as they share their deep love for old rhythms and traditions from different regions of southern Italy. Sunday 11/18 at 3 PM, Moon & Sixpence Music And Art House, 500 9th St. between E & F, $20. Another fine concert this month also features music from The Boot. At Sunday Afternoons At CBS, tenor Chris Pucci will be performing a selection of opera classics and pop standards in a program reminiscent of Andrea Bocelli. Chris has performed at Car-
By Aaron Rowan negie Hall and even received a bit of mentorship from Pavarotti while studying music. 11/4 at 3 PM, 1705 Sherwood Ave., $25/$20/$10. Bruce Guynn & Big Rain appear at Moon & Sixpence on Sunday the 11th. Their music has been on radio charts throughout the U.S., Europe and Australia. Their live set effortlessly flows from up-tempo dance songs to heartfelt ballads to improvisation. Bluesy Americana songwriter Bethany Saint-Smith will give an opening set. She’s just released a book of poetry and might even give a reading or two as well. 3 PM, $15. The State Theatre hosts two screenings of a fascinating music documentary, Landfillharmonic, on Thursday the 15th. The film follows the adventures of a student orchestra from Paraguay who play instruments built from recycled garbage. I saw a few of these instruments up close when I visited the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix. Showings are 10:30am and 6:00pm, free to the public. And we’ll end this month at Moon & Sixpence on Sunday 11/25 with Briget Boyle, performing work from her recent solo
album. Briget comes from a background singing traditional East European folk music with several different ensembles, but her solo career is built on genre-bending Americana. Show starts at 3 PM, $10 at the door. Up close and intimate is the greatest way to experience live music, so be sure to visit www.modestounplugged.com to stay up to date on all Modesto Unplugged has to offer!
GO NEWMAN Over at the classic West Side Theatre in November there is a reunion to look forward to and enjoy. It’s the return of the west side’s own HIGHWAY 33 band. This group of talented musicians has a tremendous fan group and real history in Stanislaus and Merced counties. West Side residents and former West Side residents, Frank Amaral, Tino Gomes, David Hicks, David Keller, and Paul Rettinhouse reunite to perform some of their favorite rock and roll standards. “America Recycles Day”
A campaign instituted by the National Recycling Coalition, is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle and buy recycled products. Since its inception in 1997, the America Recycles Day campaign has grown to include millions of Americans pledging to increase their recycling habits at home and work, and to buy products made with recycled materials. Residents in every State of the nation participate in America Recycles Day events. Held annually on November 15th, millions of people become better informed as a result of the national America Recycles Day campaign. In the “spirit” of America Recycles Day, the City of Modesto’s Solid Waste Division is partnering with the Stanislaus County Department of Environmental Resources in hosting an America Recycles Day event on November 15, 2018 at the Historic State Theatre. We will be showing the award winning environmental film, Landfill Harmonic at no charge. The film takes a look at trash as a valuable resource and offers alternatives for creating music out of trash. Landfill Harmonic is a true testament to the human spirit and that anything is possible when you believe! In a world where we have become a disposable society, a film like Landfill Harmonic will make you believe in innovation and endless possibilities even in the most unlikely places.

INTER VIEW Each November 11, we take the time to remember, recognize and celebrate those that put their lives on the line to service our county, keeping us free for nearly 250 years. There are also those that make sure that our veterans are cared for and served every day of the year. Modesto has recently seen the addition of a full service Veterans facility, offering education, meeting spaces, events and health services. In addition to health issues, many veterans need assistance to continue their education or find employment upon re-entering civilian life and returning to their homes in Stanislaus County. A large number of veterans do not know what services are available to them - or even where to turn. Michael Pelucca was recently appointed Board Chair of the Veterans Foundation of Stanislaus County. Mike served two tours in Vietnam as a U.S. Marine. He retired, after 38 years in education as a high school Business Education Teacher. Mike is active in the Marine Corps League, Disabled American Veterans, and the American Legion. He is also a current staff member of the annual Stanislaus County Marine Reserves Toys for Tots Campaign. Mike also tutors adults in Reading for Literacy programs. Mike is Chair of the Foundation and also Commandant of the Marine Corps League. Let’s get to know Mike and learn more about what they do. ModestoView: What is the mission of the newly formed Veterans Service Center? Mike Pelucca: The Veterans Foundation of Stanislaus County is committed to bringing people, organizations and resources together in time, space, and effort to effectively improve the well-being of all Stanislaus County veterans of the United States Armed Forces and their families. We entered into an agreement with Stanislaus County to create, operate, maintain and lease our 19,000 sq. ft. portion of the overall building. The Stanislaus Veteran Center located at 3500 Coffee Rd. in Modesto serve veterans, their families and many others in the community. Among services offered are the Veterans Service Office, the Area Agency on Aging, the MOVE project, HICAP insurance consultation, the Community Services Agency. Medical Care is offered by the VA Medical Clinic through VA Palo Alto Medical System. MV: You must be passionate about the role our service people have in protecting the USA as you service two tours in Vietnam. How does this affect your new role a service provider to fellow veterans? MP: I was injured in my second tour in Vietnam and medevac’d out and spent a year and half in the hospital. I saw firsthand what happens to many veterans, even those

who never served in combat were injured and exposed to harmful unknown and dangerous chemicals and accidents. Approximately 37% of veterans eligible for benefits from the Veterans Administration (VA) are enrolled in the system. Many do not know what they are entitled to have, or how to enroll. One of our goals was provide a one stop shop for veterans and their dependents. That is one reason why we formed the Veterans Foundation of Stanislaus County (VFSC). MV: Was it difficult to do a second tour in Vietnam? MP: It was not difficult to serve a second tour in Vietnam. I volunteered. I returned two months after I came back from the first tour. I felt that would I better serve in Vietnam rather than states. I had experience and knowledge to help new marines coming to the war. MV: Based on your experience, what is one of the common services that veterans require? MP: The most common services needed by veterans, are to enroll in the VA system for benefits they are entitled to have and earned, assistance with counseling to make the transition from the military into civilian
MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE
life, and finding assistance programs to help them have better life. We gather and provide information on county-wide events and resources to help veterans. MV: It was a multi-year project to be able to develop the Veterans Service Center, what did this accomplish that hadn’t been done in the past. MP: The Veteran Service Center provides veterans and their families to find the most needed assistance programs and socialization opportunities in one place. No driving all around town. Very soon we will be starting a morning coffee and doughnuts program in our banquet hall that holds up to 300 people seated. This will enable veterans to come in and socialize with other veterans to renew friendships and make new friends. Veterans may play cards, read, engage others in conversation. They will also be able to tell us what we can do for them at the center. Currently we hold a Senior Day Dance every Thursday beginning at 9:00 a.m. The band – Bonnie and the Boys Out Back – provides music for dancing and enjoyment. Our volunteers make fresh sandwiches that people can purchase with chips and beverages. This program has been in place for over a year. We also have a Friday afternoon veterans
and their guests at our Lounge/Bar starting at 4:30 p.m. every week. We are also setting up a library of used books and magazines for veterans to utilize. MV: What have been some of the big successes since the Center has been open? MP: We hold an annual Crab Feed in January and several events throughout the year. The dinner will also celebrate our WWII veterans’ with a tribute including the Johansen High Scholl musical program providing music and a presentation of the World War II era. We recently held a First responders dinner and tribute to remember the 9-11 tragedy. Many events have been held at our center Since April 2017. MV: How can people help with this project and get involved? MP: People wishing to help our project may volunteer to help, make donations, and come by to visit the Veterans Center. We are looking to create a museum in our lobby and hallways with items that reflect what veterans have done, and are doing, for our country. We live in a great country. They may contact us at 3500 Coffee Rd Suite 15, Modesto, 95355 or call us at 209-343-6292. Our main hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00p.m. Weekdays. MV: Is this facility available to non-veterans, such as other community groups? MP: The facility is available for non-veterans and other community groups to use for events or simply to visit us. MV: What do you enjoy most about living in Modesto? MP: I was born in Modesto and like this community and the location is near many places to reach fairly easy like the mountains and the ocean. MV: What is something that people might not know about our Veterans? MP: Many people may not know that Veterans’ all around our community and the country quietly work and volunteer in their community to help in many ways that help people in our country. They are unsung heroes ready to help those in need. When Veterans’ commit to assist, they follow through and sometimes go above and beyond. They are skilled and disciplined from their experiences in the military. MV: Our signature question; Beatles or Stones ? MP: Beatles 1st, Stones 2nd and also the Beach Boys For more information: http://vetsfoundation.org 3500 Coffee Rd, Ste 15 Modesto 95355 209.343.6292

Our advice, stay out of the long lines and spend this day shopping with our local stores. Or you can do like we did last year and do a downtown Modesto Pub Crawl. You will feel so relieved to not be shopping, but cruising around with your friends and enjoying the day after Thanksgiving.
Creativity,

family, friendship and fun is in the air every
November in Modesto USA. I walk outside in the morning to get my morning newspaper and it is dark, chilly and amazing. I just love the feeling in the air, and the buzz in the community as we get ready for the holidays, getting ready for Thanksgiving and other fun harvest events. Pretty soon, over the Thanksgiving weekend it all seems to fade into the Christmas holidays and Hannukah celebration. It is kind of weird how it just transitions and the seasons change from warm and comfy harvest to cool and wintery in front of your eyes, just like the center pages of this magazine you are reading. Kinda freaky huh? So let’s get into it and check out the cool things to enjoy. Shop Local on Small Business Saturday. This is the day when it is all about our local economy. When you shop local, you are not buying a CEO their third beach house, you are helping someone put their kids through school, play soccer and support the local business people that are the first to give back to the community. These are the people that are investing in our community so we should invest in them too. We do business here with our friends and we need to keep our $ local.

Singing Bear
I’m so excited to be at Mod Shop! It feels like these bibs are coming full circle; let me explain why. I’m Maggie High (née: Bankson) and I make baby bibs. My mom used to make these bibs and I helped her at craft shows/markets. Her health has since declined and when my baby started eating solids, I couldn’t use other bibs so I started making them. I’ve breathed new life into the bibs. I use contemporary fabrics, I revamped the edging, and I am very committed to and passionate about using only 100% natural materials. I served in the Peace Corps in Ethiopia and have traveled all over the world and have seen how plastic and synthetic waste can affect the environment, especially in places where trash pick up doesn’t happen. I believe that we, in developed nations especially, need to do all we can to help protect our environment. Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/ singingbearshop Website: http://www.singingbearshop.com

Holiday Preview By Chris Murphy
If you thought 2018 went by fast, wait until you experience the next 60 days. The Harvest and Holiday season is always so great here in our area. This year while we enjoy all things Pumpkin Spice, we will get into the Holiday season on the 17th with the opening of the Modesto on Ice Skating rink. All Skate! All Skate! Those are words that everyone loves. This super fun seasonal ice rink opens in the heart of Downtown Modesto on November 17th, 2018. Tickets go on sale online November 1st and are $12 for children 3-12 years old and $15 for ages 13 and up, including skate rentals. Best of all, make an evening out of it and walk around 10th and 11th St before or after your skate. Pre-skate dinner? Pictures with Rockin’ Santa at Rockin Holiday? Apres-skate cocktails or a movie? There is so much to do and enjoy. You can buy your tix in advance to make it easy to get out on the ice. Make sure you fill out your waiver in advance. www.modestoonice.com
Dickens Faire - December 1 7am-3pm
Take a step back in time! The McHenry Mansion will be fully decorated like a Victorian Christmas and there will be crafts and activities for the kiddos at the McHenry Museum. You may tour the beautiful McHenry Mansion, which will be decorated for the holidays as it was in Victorian Times. Docents dressed in period clothing, and stationed throughout the home, will be available to answer questions about the history and artifacts of this beautiful Victorian house. Note, the Modesto Farmer’s Market will be at its regular location.
Holiday Parade December 1

Make sure you get your spot along the route and your fave restaurant patios will fill up fast so don’t miss out. The Rockin’ Tree lighting happens immediately following the parade in 10th St Plaza. www.modestogov.com/553/Holiday-Parade

Special Guests! The 191st Army Band
Is coming to Modesto. This is a really big deal as this band has performed all around the world. Dating back to WWII, the 91st Division Band has a rich and distinguished history. Instituted in 1943, the band played near the front line in Italy alongside the 91st Infantry Division. In 2003, the band was ordered into active military service for 19 months for which it was awarded the Army Superior Unit Award. In 2008, the band was reassigned the 191st Army Band under the 63rd Regional Support Command.

There will be two versions of the 191st Army Band performing in Modesto on December 1. First during the City Of Modesto Holiday Parade, there will be a traditional marching band which will excite the crowd. Immediately following the Rockin’ Holiday Tree lighting in 10th St Plaza, the party band version will take to the stage for a fun night of Christmas holiday favorites and dance music to rock the crowd into the December night while the ModestoView snow flurries swirl and Rockin Santa visits with kids and families. Modesto is honored to have this amazing band here in our community to celebrate opening night.

Well, fall is upon us and there are changes in weather, temperature and political climate, I feel a chill! But whether you vote Blue, Red or Sepia Brown, if you believe in change just Vote. After all the drama on social media picking sides and naming names we all need to go out and vote, but please vote, this is how things get done and this is how we the people effect a change. And thanks all that came out to Blue Monday Party in October, aside from some great music by the band and Raul Slaps was the featured artist which was a fundraiser to replace his stolen Trombone. We raised a good chunk of change to help with his new bone. On to the business at hand, if you were at the Mama Awards you know we have some great musicians here in the Valley that we need to continue to support by any means possible. This means being creative about venues, promoting the arts and making it happen. New on the horizon this year a new venue is the “Shire” that won a Mama that is creating a new scene for the music and arts so check them out!

Hello, hello, hello.
Congratulations to Serena Gamboa--the Spicy Latina--for her win at the 2018 Modesto Area Music Awards (MAMA) for Best Comedy. Serena was born and raised in Modesto and has been performing and producing shows for five years. She was raised by her dad, an ex-Marine/ex-cop, so she has a love for veterans and regularly produces benefits for veteran’s groups. Serena is also a cannabis advocate due to her own experiences with cannabis for her epilepsy and works with Weed for Warriors. This advocacy has led her to create her own private label hot sauce. Please join me for an extended interview with Serena on the Modesto View website as she is my guest on my video show Run the Light. Speaking of interviews...apologies to Marcus Peverill. He was my guest on Run the Light for October, however, the video was not shared due to technical difficulties. Marcus will be rescheduled for December. In the meantime, he is probably performing somewhere near you so find him on Facebook and see a show. You may be thinking: hey, I think I could be funny, I could get an award. Well, comics

a Thanksgiving dinner, you know how special this annual Thanksgiving meal is for so many people. Local entrepreneur and successful businessperson Dan Costa remembers this growing up and this experience formed his work ethic that still drives him today. Dan has rallied his food service partners, his own team and community friends and volunteers to serve a full Thanksgiving for any that need it. Last year they served over 2000 people in need and nearly 35,000 have been served over 30 years. Please help Dan and Denise Costa and friends on Thanksgiving Day to really make a difference in someone’s life. Additional food prepared benefits the Salvation Army of Modesto. get started at open mics and there are a lot more open mics in the 209 (Francesca’s in Patterson, Finnegan’s in Stockton, Clarion in Modesto, Fired Up Grill in Ceres and the Blue Horse Lounge in Ceres to name a few), but you may be too shy to ask how to join in. Well, here you go. A crash course in open mic: 1) The standard time at a 209 open mic is 5 minutes so you should try to have that much time ready. Less is okay--just don’t go over. 2) Show up when sign ups start. 3) Put your name on the list. 4) Introduce yourself to the host so they’ll know you’re nearby when it’s getting close to your turn. 5) Go up on stage. 6) Keep the microphone in front of your mouth and speak into it--no really, remind yourself, you’ll forget. 7) Watch for the light from the host that is your cue to leave the stage 8) leave the stage. 8) Don’t get mad if the host mispronounces your name. I’m sure you shall be so famous we will all know you are Po-TAH-to head, not Po-TAY-to head, in the meantime, have a seat, Bub. Easy peasy.

I’ve been told many times by runners and walkers alike that Modesto’s Spirit of Giving “Jingle Bell Run” is the best local race by far. Tis the Season for giving! On the morning of Saturday, December 8th, our Modesto downtown comes alive once more like Christmas morning in Whoville. Yes, the snow will fall over our downtown Spirit of Giving RUN as runners, walkers and Who and Who alike take part in this Event. It’s fitness at it’s best for this Quake DJ with the giving spirit in all. There will be a 5K run or walk, Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus, Music by The Quake Mobile DJ, snow falling from the sky, being brought to you from our friends at The Modesto View Magazine, and so much more! Oh yes and don’t forget there will also be the children’s fun run where we need all the children to chase the Grinch
out of town because he wants to steal away your Christmas. All proceeds benefited from this fantastic event go to our Youth Recreation Programs and The Modesto Gospel Mission. Don’t forget to also bring non-perishable food items for a chance to win some great raffle prizes. All food items will be donated to The Modesto Gospel Mission. Don’t wait and preregister today at www. modestospiritofgiving.org Don’t forget the MJC Turkey Trot that is a great family race on Thanksgiving Day morning. https://runsignup.com/Race/CA/ Modesto/MJCTurkeyTrot Happy Holidays friends!

ALL AGES VIEW California Dreamin’
ZEN VIEW Faith

California Dreamin’ by The Mama’s & The
Papas as well as We’re Gonna be Friends by White Stripes have been on constant repeat for me this fall. It is also Scorpio season! Scorpios are best known for their passion and their love for longtime friends. And what is more appropriate as we near Thanksgiving? Give your friends a call and maybe you will get the chance to see some of the amazing events going on at the State Theater such as a Pink Floyd tribute show
It’s good to have faith. People who go to
on November 17th or a Frozen sing-a-long on November 24th. Or maybe get a cup of coffee at The Queen Bean or Deva cafe. Speaking of, Modesto has a tremendous music scene and both of these places have lots of opportunities to check it out, such as live local bands and open mic nights. Another exciting event that is happening this month is the opening of Modesto on Ice! Only $12 for ages 3-12 and $15 for ages 13 and up for each session. This is my all time favorite part of this holiday season. There is nothing I love more than spending time at the rink, surrounded by all my friends. It truly is the most wonderful time of year.
church on a regular basis or are devoted to a spiritual practice, when faced with difficult or painful situations, can fall back on faith as a source of comfort and peace. They are not thrown off by struggles and worries; they go about their lives the best they can, all the while trusting that they can rely on God or a higher power to guide them. Exercising my faith through prayer and meditation gives me more clarity and expands my thinking to see the bigger picture. Faith puts me in touch with a larger version of myself. Turning to God for help has taken me to a deeper place within myself. I sense that it is a part of me that wants what is good for me, that makes me to seek peace, happiness, direction and wholeness in my life. Instead of feeling
lost and desperate to change something in my life right away, or feeling that I must know all the answers, I may now be able to wait for the right moment to act or make a decision. I may be more in tune with external signs pointing me in the right direction or notice the wonders of my intuition. To have faith takes courage, the ability to take risks and endure pain and disappointments. It is often in our darkest hour, when we feel that our lives are most uncertain that the opportunity presents itself for us to reach for guidance form a higher power. And miraculously help comes to us somehow, in ways we didn’t expect. For more info go to : taichi4modesto.com or call(209)572-4518

November 6 is election day. Please Vote. This is your chance to use your voice. It is a precious right and please be part of the process. The worst thing for democracy is voter apathy. You need to know how the issue affect you, know the facts, vote on the propositions, vote for your elected officials at the local level. Every vote counts, right down to who is going to be in charge of our local community school districts. ModestoView does not take political sides, but we are strongly recommend a No Vote on 6 so we can keep our local road projects on track and get our state funding. Information and knowledge are keys to success and a well informed population is the key to democracy. So don’t take a pass on this election.
Use your voice and VOTE. 26
