Becky and I are so excited to celebrate Abbey and Harrison’s engagement with Gentry and Michelle Power. Great meeting new family Fall is invigorating. It is colorful, it feels fresh, and it tastes wonderful. I don’t know why, but everything feels fresher when the mornings are chilly, the breezes roll through and as I write this, I have a sweater on as the winds passed through the patio. The 20th Anniversary of the MAMA Awards was a really fun success, our best ever as we made it a street party with our friends at the State Theatre. The musical showcase we presented made me so proud of our local music talent. Halloween is over, the bats and spider webs are put away and the leaves turn and the mornings are dark. I love it. There is a lot going on this time of year. We have been really busy at our Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group, and the ModestoView crew has been really out in force supporting the events in our community. This month, it all changes. As the commercial world starts playing Christmas music, I feel we need to resist. This is the harvest and Thanksgiving season and we need to treat it special. Call me traditional, but

not until Thanksgiving is over will I get our Christmas decorations out and as a family, we will engage in our traditions of putting up our tree, watching Christmas Vacation and drink eggnog from our Wally World cups. Which brings me to the actual season change we get here in Modesto USA. We welcome Modesto On Ice to downtown on November 23. This has been such a game changer for downtown, and it has attracted thousands of people to experience our really energy charged downtown. There is so much more happening all the time and the ice rink amplifies it. Then the other signal that the seasons are changing is Modesto’s ModShop. This is a testimony to local talent and creativity and the way we showcase our makers, our musicians and our community, we can make a really good switch over to December, again, ModShop happening on November 30, AFTER Thanksgiving. Traditions are what make our families special, and there are times when families take on new traditions, passing
some key events to the next generation. That’s the way we pass these on to the future. It is nice when so many of our family traditions are our community traditions. ModestoView and Sierra Pacific are proud to be sponsors and supporters of Modesto On Ice, ModShop, the Ill List and Rockin Holiday and it is great to feel teamed up with other people like us. It truly makes Modesto special and I am thankful to all of the businesses that team up with ModestoView here in this magazine, and support us, like we support the events that we work with. Veterans Day is November 11 By Chris Murphy
It is important to remember, as we face a more complicated world and we only go into battle only when necessary that there are so many ready to serve and all of their lives are valuable. We can’t forget the sacrifices that the few make for so many. Their stories are important to learn and their experiences can teach you a lot. So let’s make sure that we are flying our flags on November 11. Originally known as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of hostilities at the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, it was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 Here are some of the events that will mark Veterans Day: 9:30 am - The Veterans Day Parade begins at 10th and O, and proceeds down Needham to Graceada Park. There will be a program at Graceada Park in Mancini Bowl at 10:45 AM. The parade and program in the park are organized by local veterans honoring and remembering veterans and active duty military. The parade will include military vehicles, marching bands, classic cars and Grand Marshals. The family friendly program
November 11 – Escalon – Veteran’s Parade, brought to you by Escalon American Legion, begins at 10:30am on Main Street. November 11th Oakdale Veterans Day Parade - Hosted by the VFW Post 2922 starts at 9:00am at the Oakdale FES Hall on Lee. Parade starts at 10:00 am and will travel down Pontiac to Fish Park. There will be a Veterans day ceremony at 11:00 am, and the VFW Auxiliary will be serving a small lunch afterwards. Guest speakers include Jack Griffith, CEO of Protecting Soldiers Rights, and prospect for California’s 10th Congressional District Ted Howze. We will also have the Commander of VFW Post 2922 Dan Vigil Speaking, and Oakdale City Councilwoman Cheriln Bairo. Community Hospice will be holding a Veterans Pavilion Dedication on 11/11 at 11:11am. 4368 Spyres Way, Modesto.

Time of Thanksgiving By Jim Christiansen
October was a great month for art in the
community with the second round of Downtown International Mural competition. Take a walk down Art Alley and see the new work, up against the murals that appeared last year, and you get a whole new environment to enjoy in our downtown Arts Block. I was down at various times to watch the artists at work, and the reception of onlookers during DoMo market was outstanding. When out for Third Thursday or pub crawl, check it out, as this will continue. Art Walk itself will be November 21, and there will be Art on the sidewalks on 11th and be sure to stop in on Blades and Bottles, Dragonfly Art for Life, Carolyn Huff Gallery, Tri-Chromatic Gallery, Preservation Gallery and the other venues on the map. Check out the Shire Community on H Street for new events too. Barkin Dog Grill has changed to mostly daytime hours, but open late Third Thursday for Art Walk. Aashonte Mercer is current featured artist. Nicklaus Hunt going up November 20. My month starts with the Pick and Gather Fall Festival in Livingston November 2. I’ll have some art, and there will be music Saturday, hay rides and more. Then I get to support Crickets House with 51 other local artists and the Art Restores Kids program, November 8. Good event, art for sale supports the effort. The expanding art scene now includes a new venue at Tenth and E Streets. The Modesto Conservatory of Music, Art, Theater or MoConMAT as seen on Facebook is the brainchild of organizer Kaila Kindley. This unique new space, seeking artists, memberships, actors, poets, musicians and other opportunities for artists and community alike. Not far from Moon and Sixpence, extending the Arts into another sector downtown. Check it out at www. modestoconservatory.com The Annual exhibition by the Memorial Hospital complementary therapy program runs through November 15. “Pink, Pearls and Denim” is the theme of this year’s show by cancer survivors and caregivers. Every year this show of poetry, single artist work and collaborative efforts projects hope, gratitude, and life affirming spirit. Interesting large piece in the main gallery, is a Life is a Mosaic pathway. Many of the works are for sale, and the display often accompanied by poetry. “The Passion of Flamenco” takes place November 23 in the Mistlin Gallery, the fourth in its series of cabaret performance. A night of music, dance and desserts in an Art setting, featuring the guitar of David Chapman. Thirsty Thursday is back at Stanislaus Brewing Co. (Modesto’s beloved St. Stan’s) with weekly trivia night and drink specials! Every Thursday at 7pm, come out with
your friends and play a game of trivia via “Kahoot!” using an app on your phone. No teams-everyone plays for their own gain! There’s 120 pop-culture related questions that cover music, movies, books, comics, even actors personal lives. Mr. Mitchell and I knew about 80% of them so you have a really good chance at winning some cool prizes. They’ve expanded their menu to include brick-oven sandwiches and desserts like classic French Dip with au jus and Churro Donuts. We really liked the loaded fries, too! Did you know the Parmesan cheese is freshly shaved every day? You’ll never
see freeze-fried cheese balls in here. Their beer repertoire has also expanded and we can happily report that it is a well-rounded beer list for all beer drinkers everywhere. Our favorite on the menu right now is High Water’s Campfire Stout, a perfect autumn beer, but if you like ciders they also always carry Indigeny and Tapped Apple. They offer cauliflower crust on their pizzas, AND they have plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. Alchemy Bread’s Bonnie Ohara

owner of Alchemy Bread and self-taught sourdough bread baker, says the community of other artisans in Modesto is at the heart of what she loves about her bakery. “A lot of the people that supported me from the beginning are the other people that make stuff. The people that make soap, that roast coffee, that make music and art...” These are the first people in line on Saturday to pick up their fresh bread. “We all support each other. It’s not about the bread and cinnamon rolls, it’s about people meeting each other. It’s a place to be together.” Alchemy Bread started when Bonnie noticed how much bread her three kids could eat each week. Bonnie thought that she could save money by learning how to make her own, so she took a trip to the Stanislaus County Library, checked out some bread baking books, and made bread every single day until she got really good at it. What started with a simple loaf for her kids’ PB&J’s has become a world of baguettes, challah, brioche, and ciabatta. When asked where she got the name “Alchemy Bread” she said she was inspired by the ageold scientific pursuit of combining air, water, earth, and fire to transform lead into gold. “A lot of my origin is turning nothing into something. I turned not having enough money for food into bread and turned bread into this business. You are taking something that could not sustain you on its own and making it into something that fills you with joy through a magical process.” Bonnie began to post on social media and started a blog which gained organic attention and popularity because of one fact: people love bread. She posted new recipes, beautiful designs, tips and tricks and one day was approached by a publisher with the idea to write a book! Bread Baking for Beginners was released in October of 2018 and has quickly become a national sensation. Organized in order of difficulty, with her book you can start by learning how to bake a perfect loaf and eventually learn the art of the French baguette and braided challah. We asked if we could quickly learn to make a baguette by the holidays, but Bonnie gave us some bad news. “Baguettes are the last chapter. They are so hard. It probably took me about 500 baguettes before I felt like I was making beautiful baguettes that I would feel comfortable charging people money for. They’re so simple, they’re difficult. They should have a thin, crisp crust, airy inside, and a nice nutty flavor, never squishy.” Though her freshly baked breads and goodies are only available to Modesto locals, her recipes are being made by bread lovers across the country including celebrities like Jenna Fischer. Alchemy Bread offers monthly subscription boxes, brand new classes, and epic merch that features Modesto, CA in the logo that have been sent around the world. She shares all the information for her new schedule and menus on her social media channels like Facebook, Instagram, and her website. But you better hurry! “When I upload anything on my website, I always post to Instagram and Facebook. It’s first come, first serve for all of our classes and subscription boxes, so they often sell out. I recommend putting on notifications and alerts for social media posts so you know right away when there’s something new.” Every Saturday at noon, Bonnie hosts Saturday Bread at her home. Folks line up along the block to try her fresh bakes of the week while catching up with their friends and neighbors in the community. Saturday Bread is open to all and is the highlight of every week. What could be better than a trip to the farmers market and a stop at Bonnie’s to round out the perfect weekend morning? When Bonnie hosted her first class in October, she noted that there was only one person from Modesto, while all the others came from over an hour and a half away with copies of her book to be signed! Modesto’s 1915 Southern Pacific Depot
Save the Depot! If the current plan is accepted by the city council, our 114-year-old depot will lose much of its historic and architectural integrity. The plan is to remove most of the interior waiting room walls including the historic women’s waiting room, creating one large open space. The exterior wall on the track side, considered the front of the depot, would also be removed extending the waiting room to the arches that would be filled in with store front windows and doors. Though done in the name of safety, security, and to meet the needs of ACE Train passengers, these goals can be met, and the building’s historic integrity preserved and restored. Over the decades our depot has been altered to fit
the needs of the times but overall the building has maintained its character defining Mission Revival features inside and out. With this major alteration, the historic feel of the building and its value as an economic and tourist asset for the city will be lost forever. This should be a prime opportunity to adapt the depot to a new life, to preserve as much as possible of the historic building, to restore many original details lost over the years, and to provide the security we all desire. If this is done right, we will have a safe, comfortable, beautiful depot that is an icon for the city; a tourist attraction especially for architecture, history, and railroad enthusiasts; a beautiful building that will be a gateway to our city; and

a building we will be proud of as we celebrate in 2020 the 150th anniversary of the founding of our city by the railroad. I think we deserve better. If you think the same, I encourage you to write to your city council member, the mayor, and the city manager expressing your desire that they provide a transparent review process with public input, and ask them to come up with a new plan that provides security, safety, efficiency, and preserves and restores the historic interior and exterior of the depot. After a many year struggle with the Southern Pacific Railroad, the Modesto Chamber of Commerce successfully sued the railroad in 1914 winning a new depot for the city. The railroad relied on its own architect and assistant chief engineer John Quincy Barlow and his team to design the Mission Revival style depot. The contract price was $9,720. Construction began Monday, July 12, 1915, and the depot opened at 4 pm, December 11, 1915. The depot was used by the railroad until 1971. It was Modesto’s third depot. The first depot, built in 1870, burned in a spectacular fire on August 23, 1884. The second depot opened in November 1884 and was used until December 1915. It burned in 1982. The first two depots were at 9th and I Street.

Now that we are in the world of all-digital streaming all the time and things craved are powered by batteries and are obsolete the day you get them, there is something kind of wrong about this. Not that we don’t love our technology, but there is nothing really special about a space grey digital device. You can’t make one at home, you can’t pass it down from generation to generation and it really doesn’t warm your heart like something homemade. Things that are made with care and wonderful experiences are the best gift you can give. We are very lucky as Modesto is loaded with some amazing crafters and artisans. From the amazing local baked bread artistry of our FoodView featured Alchemy Bread to the funky felt creations of Wonky Felt, there is truly something interesting for everyone. Ahh, but you say, “Why can’t I sit in my jammies and order up all of my presents and have it delivered to my door one box at a time?”. You can, but you shouldn’t. FILM VIEW More than likely, you’ve already heard about Modesto’s 20 Year Plan. Well, brace yourself because this up-and-coming, Moguls in the making duo, are destined to change the trajectory of said plan! Allow me to introduce you to Sky Tallone and Jon “Spider” Santana. Together as partners in business, (and in love), they have created a locally successful company called Aberrant Films. The two met while attending The Academy of Art in 2007. Initially, a friendship emerged over their love of competitive pool. To this day, neither can agree on who is better at the game. At any rate, one thing is true, they both share a love of film and a great desire to develop their craft by making it huge here, in Stanislaus County. Sky and Spider are a strikingly attractive couple. To look at them, you end up wondering why they don’t just cast themselves in the starring roles of their own films. Each has done their fair share of acting, but their true passion is in writing and directing. I tease them about their good looks because, with those great faces, you would never think that the two of them would write such dark scripts and stories. I call their writing style, “Very dark, (with a smile).” Sky and Spider’s film company have already

garnered them multiple awards for the films they have created together. Their repertoire consists of numerous films, including “Vox Populi” and “Citizen Cube.” Although they work closely with their friend Tyson, an illustrator and one of their buddies from The Academy of Art, many of the early productions were created in the home of Sky’s mother and father. When it came time to shoot, often, it was a family affair. Sky’s sister Sierra, also acts in a few leading roles, including, “Finn Stein.” I co-starred alongside Sierra in “The Top Room” for the 2019 Modesto 48 Hour Film Competition. Aberrant Films was awarded “Best Student Film.” Aberrant Films is lighting up Modesto’s entertainment sky with stars in the making and we have Sky Tallone and Jon “Spider” Santana to thank for it! Camp Jack Hazard is such a part of our community fabric. Life skills are found at camp and it is so good when kids can experience it. There is a very special event at the State Theatre featuring the amazing music of Oakdale native Brett Dennen in the cool vibe of the State, celebrating 85 years. Brett’s music began during formative years when he was a camper and later a counselor at Camp Jack Hazard. Brett learned how to play guitar at Camp. His most recent album is “Here’s Looking at you Kid” and he has been touring non-stop in 2019 on his Lift and Vacationer Tours. Previously touring with Jason Mraz, John Mayer, Dave Matthews Band, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Pete Murray, Michael Franti and
others, it is great to have him in Modesto for this show. Jason Poisson, the dynamic leader of the Jack and Buena Foundation that operates the Camp, is excited about this show and the chance to bring our community together to support a great place that delivers an important experience to the youth of our community. Are you ready for a guilt-free Thanksgiving dinner? This is a family friendly 3.1 mile course on a paved path with some grass and dirt. The 1/2 mile kids run will be on grass, 1/4 mile out and 1/4 mile back. There is also a Gobbler Walk, an event for just walkers on the same 5k course. Strollers/dogs are welcomed. Lots of parking, easy run and a lot of fun. Check in begins at 7:30 am and races start 8:45 for the kids and 1Ž2 and 9:30 for the 5K. Overall male and female finishers will receive a medal. In 1994 downtown Modesto was a different place. The big department stores were gone, the theatres were dark and many businesses were boarded up. But this was about to change. At the same time the State Theatre was being restarted, long time restaurateurs Mitch and Tammy Maisetti and Paul Tremayne would open the aptly named Tresetti’s. (TREmayne & maiSETTI) They created the World Café and Wine Shop and it helped lead the revival of excellent downtown dining, supported the growth of the arts, and encouraged a new wave of new restaurants in downtown Modesto. What has made Tresetti’s successful, has been the hands-on management of the Maisetti family. They were big supporters of live music, hosted Fat Tuesday and street festivals, supported the Downtown Sampler and are generous with their guest celebrity bartender fundraisers. Over the years, they opened and closed Jax, parted ways with Paul, and continue to co-own the legendary Tiki Lounge. Sadly, Mitch passed
away in 2014, losing his battle with cancer and his wife Tammy and son Jordan, stepped up to fill this larger than life void. It was difficult, as they grieved this loss, they had the strength to press on and kept the focus of innovative food and great service at the front. Tresetti’s is still a strong leader in the dining experience in Downtown Modesto and they welcome the downtown competition as Tammy says “It makes downtown Modesto a better destination”. One thing you will find today that was true in 1994, Tammy, Jordan and Jaxon Maisetti are there with niece Christine Davis, on the floor, in the kitchen, celebrating Dodger blue and mingling with their loyal and new customers, working side by side with their dedicated team, making sure the experience is as good as always. Additionally, you can support the local arts community by buying gift certificates to your favorite cafes, restaurants and bars that host live music and act as makeshift galleries. So why not stop off at Ralston’s Goat Deva, Queen Bean, Tresetti’s to name a few and pick up some stocking stuffers. Don’t forget the Gallo Center, State Theatre and or the Prospect Theatre; all three have events scheduled throughout the year and tickets make for thoughtful gifts too. Buying and giving local will make you feel fantastic, and you can be assured that your gifts will be some of the coolest under the tree. While you are out shopping for friends and loved ones, don’t forget to treat yourselves. Pick up some new music and art, get dinner or see a show when you are grabbing those gift certificates. The wind down is upon us. The reflection is on the horizon. The blessings are counted, inventory taken at holiday time as to where we might be without our fortunate favor and luck. Maybe this is the first time you get the chance to pay it forward, return the favor and elevate someone who doesn’t have your opportunities. The annual fundraising concert and coat drive, SHARE the WARMTH will be held on Friday, November 22 at the Barkin Dog Grill. This annual event will feature award winning artists from the region from 7-10 pm. This all ages event is free and all donations of outerwear will benefit the Inter Faith Ministries of Greater Modesto clothes closet which will serve 1000 families a month. Please come and enjoy an evening of great music for a super cause, reservations strongly suggested. On Wednesday, November 20, MAMA winning Singer Songwriter Mondo Mariscal and his band, Good Time Charlie will bring their exciting brand of Country

We thank him for his support but realize it will be a loss to have one less venue for all ages to support the arts community and allow family to support the arts but family comes first you all. COMEDY VIEW Hello, hello, hello. I am currently at an undisclosed location in the South, but I can still stay current 209 goings-on. Last month I had each MAMA-nee give their statement and this month I have an interview with this year’s winner: Chris Teicheira. This is Chris’ second win. Chris is a Manteca native and when he’s not driving his tractor for his family farm he is busy making people laugh. Chris is also the closest thing to a leader of the Deaf Puppies. The Deaf Puppies is a group of comics who bring together their unique talents to produce shows throughout the valley and maybe a little mischief, too. The group is named after Chris’ very own doggy pal who is, in fact, a deaf puppy. Felicia: How long have you been performing? Chris: This is my 10th year, though I did take a few months off in 2010 to start and end a marriage. Felicia: Is it different winning the second time? Chris: It was a little different this time, I’d lost 6 or 7 years in a row when I won the first. So this one was a little more joyous, and not so much a relief as 2015. Felicia: What was your secret to winning? Chris: My secret to winning is being a FB tramp, and having high school teacher

Great Weather For Cycling By Efren Martinez Halloween has passed and the chill in the air is starting to get even chillier. Soon we’ll be all layering up with sweaters and jackets. Yes the flip flop sandals have been put on the highest shelf in our closet along with our sped up metabolic rate we were enjoying during the summer. As I’ve mentioned in previous FitViews, when it gets cold, our metabolic rate generally slows down and it’s easier for most of us to gain weight during the cold winter months. In fact research has us to believe that most of use will put on an extra 4-6 pounds over the holidays. Why? During the hot summer months our metabolic rate generally speeds up because our bodies are working harder to keep us cool. When you perspire, it’s a sure sign that your metabolic rate is in full gear. It is flowing at a much faster pace to keep us cool versus if we were lounging all snuggled up with a blanket on the sofa. During the winter we all tend to be less active and it starts right around October. Lately I’ve noticed a decline of people at my gym as well as the regular folks that I’d see out exercising when I’m on a run or bike ride. Loads of factors are up against you this winter to stay away from the gym and/or your fitness routine. Another show stopper that might be up against you to shy off from your fitness is

the loss of dayight in comparison to how much sunshine we had all summer. Soon it will be dark by 5 pm and you just might find yourself looking to put on your pajamas. Don’t do it! Instead put on you fitness clothes even if you don’t plan on working out. This should help push away that mind set internal clock that’s telling you it’s dark and time for bed. So here it is, it’s too dark to go for a run or bike ride. It’s too cold to even think about going to the gym when you’re all cozy and warm on the sofa. No worries! You can still avoid gaining those extra 4-6 pounds during the holidays without much effort. Back when I was 330lbs, I wasn’t healthy enough to exercise so instead of doing pushups, I started to do push-outs. They’re simple and have to do more with self discipline. How it works is when that second helping of food is put in front of you, “push it out” and away. That glass of eggnog, push it out and away. That second cocktail, push it out and away. That scoop of ice-cream or piece of cake, push it out and away! You get the idea. Honestly doing these push outs helped me in so many ways. Soon after I managed easily pushing out and away those second helpings. I was able to incorporate this behavior to help me quit smoking and any other unfavorable habits. Now if I can just use this same concept to help me with shopping. Comically speaking and according to my wife, this would be a favorable thing since I tremendously love to shop for fashionable clothes. Cheers to your health!
Little Free Libraries
It is the giving season and what better gift to give than to donate the gift of reading? You can help develop a love for reading, especially in youths that will continue through their entire life. Modesto has a plethora of unique little libraries scattered across town, there is an excellent chance that one is in your neighborhood. These little libraries rely on the take a book, give a book model. They are almost always in need of donations, especially kids books. Maybe you will find a book you have been wanting to check out too. We are encouraging everyone to go through their collection and see what you have just collecting dust. There are many ways to help those that need
it the most during the holidays. You don’t need to have a lot to give a little. Everyone can help in some way. Here are a couple of ways you can make a difference. We like the Salvation Army because over 85% of all funds received go directly to those in need and all are served without discrimination. The best way to help those in need is NOT to give to people in the streets, but to give to organizations that do the most good in the right places. The Salvation Army serves this way and you can be assured that your dollars actually go to food and shelter. This is a very important issue that we can help solve. You can also help support Salvation Army in other ways. You can be a bell ringer for Salvation Army by calling 209522-3209. You can do this as an individual, a family, or with a group. You can also give personal items that are needed in the shelters. Donations can be taken to 320 9th Street. Items needed are: toiletries, bedding, new towels, underwear & socks. KettleView ModestoView and MAMA will be ringing the bell! The Kettle Kick off is the big event of the year, created by the legendary Modesto volunteer Bette Belle Smith. Modesto starts the giving season off big! Join your friends at the Modesto Center Plaza for the Salvation Army Kettle Kick Off. Nearly $200,000 gets raised to help prepare for the winter and holiday season. The Kick-off is Thursday, November 21, 11:30 at the Centre Plaza. Tables are only $100 for a table of 10 and nearly sold out. If you can’t make it please donate and support the teams that are raising $$.

Thanksgiving Celebration will be held on Monday, November 25 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church at College and Soddard. The event will begin with gathering music at 6:45 PM and the Thanksgiving Celebration, featuring music from the multitude of Stanislaus County faith communities will begin at 7 PM. Comfort Kits Hundreds of children in our area enter foster care every year with just the clothes on their back or a few belongings in a garbage bag. In collaboration with Child Protective Services, Love Modesto has developed Comfort Kits (quality bags with many useful items) for children who have just been uprooted from their family. In order to meet the need, we need 1,000 Comfort Kits. The average retail costs for each kit is $50-70, but we can purchase items in bulk at around $40/kit. Here’s how you can help: 1) Donate Comfort Kits. If you would like to donate, Love Modesto needs receive all financial donations by November 1. Or you can shop for Comfort Kits on your own. 2) On December 5th and 6th (9:30-12:30pm), can you volunteer at the Christmas Comfort Kit Drive. Your help would be greatly appreciated. I encourage you to make this a tradition of your own if it isn’t already. Another holiday favorite coming up this month, and what I personally look forward to all year, is Modesto on Ice! Beginning Saturday, November 23rd, you can visit our seasonal ice rink in the heart of downtown Modesto. You definitely do not have to be an experienced skater to enjoy this wonderful amenity. Want to take a break? Order hot chocolate and a cookie while sitting under a beautiful tent decorated with floral arrangements and hanging lights. ZEN VIEW Obstacles to Self-Discovery The obstacles to fully
discovering oneself may be that we are continuously emphasizing certain aspects of ourselves while neglecting others. We say we don’t have time. But it may be a matter of choices we make. Are we really trapped? I have noticed that people have a way of overdoing things. This isn’t just true with frivolous pursuits but also with activi-

ties that on the surface appear virtuous. The latter ones can be, in a hidden sort of way, just as self-destructive. We may need to question our priorities. For example, a priority could be wanting to take care of a lot of duties a.s.a.p. and getting them done well and quickly. We are racing with ourselves, time being our opponent. How much can we get done? Or we may be involved in taking care of other people and their problems, trying to help with their challenges while ignoring our own. We wonder why we’re feeling irritable and exhausted, somewhat dissatisfied. I certainly got some of that obsession going on. I’m a fastidious cleaner. I want everything to look nice and tidy. I’m quite the slave driver, with me being the slave. It has happened that I go to sleep and ask myself whether being so fastidious with making order and cleaning the house continuously is all that essential. I always have the answer to that question. It really isn’t all that important. I’d rather have more time set aside to be creative, to uncover and develop the less known parts of myself. Go out, do something out of the ordinary. I may have to try something new, give up the comfort of doing the same old same old, even sacrifice not being so good all the time. I ask myself what is missing in my life. What would I
do if it wasn’t too selfish? If it wasn’t too crazy? I think many people are caught in this dilemma. But wouldn’t it be better if we were more interested in discovering more about our true nature? It may bring lots of positive changes. Sitting at home too much we miss all the wonderful things going on in our communities, but being constantly on the go and never finding rest, may also not lead to self-discovery. We need a bit of both. Time alone to meditate and enjoy just being there in the moment, as well as time to step into the unknown and walk the road less travelled. Discovering oneself is the work of a lifetime, requiring many attempts and learning by trial and error. Listen to the voice inside, to the longing of your soul. Your soul may want to run through a forest, sit by a stream, draw, paint, play music and dance. Sometimes do exactly what you thought you don’t like to do! Surprise yourself. Learn something new. Meet new people. Contacting anything new can give oneself an experience of a different dimension of oneself one hasn’t nourished and cultivated in a while or never before. It is so cool to see our local performing arts theatres launch their new seasons. The Gallo Center is in full gear and now the Turlock Community announces their 2019/20 season. Kit Casey and the team put together an annual line up that always pleases, bringing some new performances and bringing back some favorites. Right out of the gate, Turlock will be presenting the legendary comedian Gallagher for his Farewell Smash Tour on November 9. Gallagher basically invented the comedy special and has 3,500 live shows, 14 Showtime specials and if you sit in the Sledge Zone or Death Rows, bring glasses and raincoats. It’s going to be a fun season with James Garner as Johnny Cash, the US Air Force Band, Price is Right Live, Tom Russell and the Tam Tam Talent show and more to come.
