Fall is invigorating. Especially this year. The last 20 months have been gray, blah and a long cold lonely winter. Everything seems to taste better in the fall and this year even better, as I lost of a lot of my taste when I had COVID last year. That really sucked. Now, things taste wonderful, buttery, savory and sweet. You know it is full when the restaurants have butter nut squash on their menus, one of my favorite dining out seasons. AND, many days are nice enough to still sit on the patio. Did I ever mention that I love patio dining? Yes, I probably did, more than once. Even though we are not out of the COVID woods yet, it is time to get that holiday feeling back, as we know it won’t be as bad as last year. It is feeling colorful, it feels fresh, and it tastes wonderful. After a year of what seems like non-stop fires, the air is feeling crisper as we put Halloween and the MAMA Awards behind us, we get that holiday spring in our steps. As a reminder, the way we do this is to be safe, get vaccinated and look out for each other. Thanksgiving season is not about you or me, it is about each other, and being the person that makes our community safe. This is what freedom really is. October went by in a flash. The 21st MAMA Awards celebrated a rebirth of our music and performing arts community and was a fun success where we recognized our “Lifeline” awards for those that helped us get through. There is a lot going on this time of year. We have been really busy at our Sierra Pacific

Warehouse Group keeping the supply chain running, and the ModestoView crew has been really been working hard creating new events and spreading the positive word. This is the month of Thanksgiving. I am a believer in celebrating the holiday at hand. As the commercial world starts playing Christmas music, I feel we need to resist. This is the harvest and Thanksgiving season and we need to treat it special. Call me traditional, but not until Thanksgiving is over and the dishes washed, will I get our Christmas decorations out. As a family, we will engage in our traditions of putting up our tree, watch Christmas Vacation and drink eggnog from our Wally World cups. It is a different fall here in Modesto USA. Many things familiar are coming back, but there are others that are still missing. One of our friends is back, as we welcome Modesto On Ice back to downtown on November 20. ModestoView and Sierra Pacific are proud to be a sponsor. This has been such a game changer for downtown and was so missed last season. Modesto On Ice has attracted thousands of people to experience our downtown, many that had whom had not visited for quite sometime. Hopefully they found something new they will like. As we gather with families for Thanksgiving and the holiday season begins with Black Friday, ModShop will be missing and will be rescheduled for the spring. However, have no fear as we are highlight some of the local crafters that will make your holiday season bright as we shop local this year, especially on those big shopping days and let’s focus our giving locally for Giving Tuesday on November 30. ModestoView is all about support our
local businesses and I am very thankful for the local businesses that advertise in the pages of ModestoView so we can continue to bring this to you, free of charge. Still, I need your help so I can help you. ModestoView works hard to have the best event calendar in the Stanislaus County area as we reopen our economy. My friend and senior editor extraordinaire Middagh Goodwin manages our calendar and spends a lot of time looking for event info. We can’t do it without you. Please send us your events, boutiques, festivals, live music, educational sessions and fund raisers, even those happening next year, so we can make our calendar the best resource you can count on and just as importantly, help you plan. Send your info to events@modestoview.com to get in our calendar and even featured in these pages, on our Facebook, our Instagram and our Twitter. No one else connects the print edition with our social and digital programs like ModestoView to help spread the word. There more there is to do, the more people get excited. I wish you all a wonderful harvest and Thanksgiving. I am truly thankful for you our readers, our friends and our partners and hope that ModestoView brings you joy and mental refreshment. I hope to see you out all safely out and about so we can enjoy this community together. Thank you all so much, Chris Murphy Founder and Publisher, ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com

THANKSGIVING VIEW By Chris Murphy There are many ways to help those that need it the most during the holidays. You don’t need to have a lot to give a little. Everyone can help in some way. Here are a couple of ways you can make a difference. We like the Salvation Army because over 85% of all funds received go directly to those in need and all are served without discrimination. The best way to help those in need is NOT to give to people in the streets, but to give to organizations that do the most good in the right places. The Salvation Army serves this way and you can be assured that your dollars actually go to food and shelter. This is a very important issue that we can help solve. You can also help support Salvation Army in other ways. You can be a bell ringer for Salvation Army by calling 209522-3209. You can do this as an individual, a family, or with a group. You can also give personal items that are needed in the shelters. Donations can be taken to 320 9th Street. Items needed are: toiletries, bedding, new towels, underwear & socks. Also, you can help anytime by going to the website and they will tell you a current need you can fulfill. Truly, anyone can lend a hand. http://www.salvationarmymodesto.org/
Comfort Kits Needed Love Stanislaus County needs our help. Hundreds of children in our area enter foster care every year with just the clothes on their back or a few belongings in a garbage bag. In collaboration with Child Protective Services, Love Modesto / Stanislaus County has the Comfort Kits program (quality backpacks or small suitcases with many useful items) for children who have just been uprooted from their family. There is a huge need for these supplies that will help in the most urgent time of need. The average retail costs for each kit is $50-70, but we can purchase items in bulk at around $40/kit.
Here’s how you can help: 1) Donate for Comfort Kits. If you would like to donate, Love Modesto needs receive all financial donations by November 2) Help assemble kits 3) Shop for Comfort Kit items or 4) Or you can shop and build Comfort Kits on your own. You can also help distribute the Comfort Kits on December 4 at Centenary Church from 8:30-11:30am. Financial donations need to be received by November 7. Completed kits need to be dropped off at Centenary Church by: November 30th (8:30-11:30am) or December 1st (8:30-11:30am). 1911 Toyon Ave., Modesto Your help would be greatly appreciated and you can donate, shop and/or volunteer, visit: www.lovestanislauscounty.org/ comfort-kit-drive
Modesto Gospel Mission Join our community in helping provide warm Thanksgiving meals and coats for the hungry and homeless this holiday season on November 24, 11-4 pm. We ask that you consider making a donation, of any amount, to support a great cause. Here’s how you can make a difference. You can donate directly to the Modesto Gospel Mission and there are ways to volunteer as well. Donate here: www.modestogospelmission. org Clothing items for the “bundle up” are: New or gently used coats for men, women, or children. All sizes, Hats, Gloves, Scarves, Socks. The Central Valley has a strong community of brave men and women that have served our country in many conflicts and wars around the world. Though we live in a very patriotic country and support our armed forces, there are many veterans at home that are in need of resources, health care, and community. The American Legion is a non-profit organization that has veterans’ best interests at heart and has been working hard to create a friendly, welcoming environment in their community. The American Legion was founded in March 1919 after World War I to help soldiers returning home and the American Legion was also instrumental in the creation of the Veterans Bureau to provide life insurance, disabilities compensation, prosthetics, and health care services. Today, the American Legion across the country continues to provide resources to veterans. The American Legion Post 74, located at the Stanislaus Veterans Center at 3500 Coffee Road, has created a space for veterans to gather, meet, reflect and tackle the issues facing the community. Culture Coffee Bar: A Mobile Community
Being a Smart Axe By Middagh Goodwin Have you ever wanted to drink a beer hang out with friends and throw an axe in the comfort and security of the indoors? Well, you are in luck, you can do just that at the Smart Axe, Modesto’s only and Northern California’s premier axe throwing experience. They have 3 beers on tap Cali Squeeze, Michelob Ultra, Lost Coast Hazy IPA and a Washington Apple Cider along with various canned beverages including hard seltzer. They have a variety of snacks and you are more than welcome to bring your own food or have it delivered. Smart Axe has 15 lanes to throw on with league nights taking place on Mondays. You are also welcome to bring your own axes but they must be approved, TVs Mark S Allen is one of the owners of Smart Axe and he took the time to talk to us about how things all got started and how Smart Axe became the fastest-growing axethrowing bar in Northern California. MV: What inspired you to open up an axe-throwing bar in Modesto. MA: One of my best friends on the planet is Doug Link, he runs and owns an Imax Theatre and he called me from New York City and said you won’t believe where I am, I’m in a bar throwing an axe and there is a line around the block, I have never had so much fun, want to do it. I said I am in and we formed the Smart Axe on that day. MA: And you are kind of a Smart Axe. MV: A little bit, that is the funny thing about it, we put all these funny names with axe in the title in a hat so my three partners and I had an equal shot of getting our name picked. I had “Axe Hole” and that was rejected and all these others, but they pulled Smart Axe out of the hat. MV: What is your demographic coming in to throw? MA: It is funny that you ask that because most people would expect it to be guys like us, guys who would throw axes at trees. But we have more females 18-24 coming in coming in than any other demo. MV: You have league nights every Monday. MA: That’s true, we are a part of the World Axe Throwing League. Very quickly when this sport started taking off in Canada and then North America they formed an international league so it is all regulated. We are
8
a member of that and have certified league events quarterly. MV: Other than Modesto how many locations do you have and where are they located? MA: This is one of six locations, we are the largest California owned and operated chain of Axe throwing bars. Our flagship is in Sunrise and 50 where we were born and survived the pandemic, Folsom on Historic Sutter Street, Roseville, Fairfield and Davis opening up in early November. MV: Thanks for bringing Smart Axe to Modesto. MA: No lie, I was talking to our manager Tiffany on the way up here, and our biggest numbers, our strongest numbers are in Modesto. MV: The ModestoView Question, Beatles or the Rolling Stones? MA: I am a Beatle guy through and through but I am conflicted. Who is the best Beatle? MV: I am a fan of Ringo. MA: I am a fan of Pete Best. Experience the best axe throwing in Modesto with us at The Smart Axe! If you want to make new friends and become an axe-throwing legend, join our Axe Throwing League! Reserve your target today.

Ah November, a month we love to focus on community….ModShop, Small Business Saturday, being thankful, paying it forward, and getting loved ones together over homecooked meals. You are probably shopping at the Modesto Farmers Market frequently this month in preparation for all the cooking and eating, and if so, then you’ve seen the cute coffee trailer always parked near I Street, the Culture Coffee Bar. And if you’re anything like me, you buy your coffee first to warm you up before you go purchase a loaf of Edith’s Zucchini bread, a Bloomingcamp Ranch berry cream pie, a bottle of Ranch seasoning from Girl vs. Garden for your favorite chicken dish, a piping hot ready-to-eat bowl for lunch from Foxwood, a sourdough salted chocolate chip cookie from MatKat to surprise your daughter, and a plethora of produce from J & J Ramos Farms. Owner Jamie Griswold worked at Get Fit on Mchenry for many years before feeling like she had reached her maximum potential there and wanted something more challenging. Wanting to stay in close proximity to the Get Fit community she loved, she wondered what she could do and how she could continue to grow that feeling of community in Modesto, and bring it to a larger audience. She loves Modesto, and all its people, and wanted her community members to be seen and heard. To have a place they felt they belonged and enjoy each other’s company. Driving around town and admiring our murals, she realized she never saw a coffee cart anywhere. Her and her husband love to travel and would spend time on their trips in small local coffee shops connecting with themselves and others, and Jamie loved the idea of making that sense of community mobile. She broached the topic with her husband who was easily converted to the idea, and in December 2017 they signed a contract to have the iconic Culture Coffee Bar trailer built. While they waited, Jamie started creating recipes for drinks. She served cold brew out of Get Fit to test recipes, make connections, and hopefully get an income coming in.
By Brandilyn Brown The Chocolate Cinnamon Buff Brew was the first creation to reach the public. It’s a protein coffee whose taste completely rivals (dare I say “obliterates”?) the famous Bang Keto Coffee drinks. Now she’s serving up three Buff Brews: the first Chocolate Cinnamon, as well as Snickerdoodle and Chocolate Peanut Butter. Culture serves both hot and cold drinks, and if you’re specifically looking for a drink that screams “It’s finally autumn!” try the Salted Maple Latte; it’s my favorite hot beverage on the menu. For your littles or non-caffeine consumers, try the sodas! My daughter loves the orange cream in summer, but in winter always goes for the hot vanilla steamer. They often carry gluten free and vegan donuts too, from Boho Buttercream. While Jamie is certainly succeeding in creating that sense of community she craves with the mobile bar (She greeted two customers by name while I was there! Talk about “being seen”!), a more concrete community is the direction she wants to go. A Culture Coffee Bar storefront will open in January, next to Get Fit at 2801 McHenry Ave. So you’ll be able to get your favorite cup o’ joe alongside a breakfast sandwich or pastry, and hang out as long as you wantto chat with that loved one you wanted to catch up with, or work on that paper that is due, or read a few chapters in that book you have been meaning to finish. While Jamie sipped on her iced Americano (her favorite item on the menu!) I asked if there was a coffee that inspired the whole journey. She chuckled and shook her head no. “It wasn’t coffee that inspired me-I love coffee, but it was a catalyst to create the sense of community I craved. I want community, Modesto needs community, and I wanted to create some. I encourage anyone who sees a lack here to fill the need. Make Modesto the place you want it to be. Anyone can do it! Never give up, go for your dreams. Don’t be at the end of your life thinking you wished you would’ve done that one important thing; if you want something, make it happen. You CAN do it!” continued page 9

MAMA Thanks
By Chris Murphy Celebrating 21 years of MAMAs was one of the most fun nights in a long time since the pandemic stopped the live music. We love celebrating our local musical talent, our musical heritage and our musical future and seeing each other again. We are at a critical time when we really all need to work hard together to make sure that Modesto area remains a ‘Live Music City”. None of this is possible without the hard work, dedication and friendship of our local music community. The MAMAs would not have happened with out the amazing diligence and promotion of Middagh Goodwin. He did an amazing job and we have a great network of talent and is a great friend. To my co-founder and friend Chris Ricci thank you for your vision, friendship and love of our local music scene and for keeping this vision alive with me for 21 Years. Jennifer Allsup is a great stage manager and kept is running on schedule with a smile. Thanks to our Sierra Pacific team for the great set up is so valuable and so very appreciated. Mark Oesau, John Herman and the stage crew were flawless and the sound was amazing and thanks to Darin Morris and VMI Rocks for the stage equipment. Thank you thank you to the State Theatre and Kirstie and Gabi for being the home of the MAMAs. Thank you Steven W. Perry for energizing the MAMA Foundation and propelling us forward and upward. ROCKABILLY VIEW
By Chris Murphy
The red velvet Speakeasy is a perfect place for these shows and ModestoView and the MAMA Association are proud to present these shows along with Tony T and Trevino’s Barber Shop to celebrate and preserve Modesto’s Rockabilly heritage that began in 1938. BONUS! Who is Roddy Jackson? Only one of the originals, rockin’ the central valley since 1958. Not only was he in the Blue Notes and Kent Whitt and the Dowbeats, he is a songwriter with his own music that is known around the world. Roddy penned the song She Said “Yeah” co-written with Sonny Bono. First hit with Larry Williams, it was then covered by the Animals, Rolling Stones, Flaming Groovies, and Paul McCartney. Roddy still tours the world, and recently played Viva Las Vegas. How cool is that? Soon, he will be back on a local stage at the Speakeasy, possibly November 12. You can purchase his collection here www.amazon.com/Roddy-Jackson-Consider/dp/B08HFQGG9
Modesto is getting its Rockabilly groove back. There are some really cool shows happening that you should not be missing. Inside the Speakeasy on 12th St, some of the most jumping music around is going on with bands from up and down the 99 dropping in. Big slappin’ bass, driving guitar riffs and a beat that will get you dancing. Last month we had the Rocketz and the Infamous Swanks and it was great. This month, the action continues on November 12 with the Highway 99 Meet up with really cool bands like Hotel Circle, the Pendletons and a possible quest appearance by the legendary Roddy Jackson, the Central Valley Fireball and global Rockabilly star. The fun continues on November 26 with a knock out show with 3 Bad Jacks, The Pendletons, Tractor Boy and a solo set by Daniel DeLeon of the Rexerex. The music gets going at 9 pm and you won’t want to miss anything.

As we finish up this November ModestoView, it is raining, hard. Last I checked it was snowing in the mountains, dumping a couple of feet of that valuable white snow and some resorts are evening opening early. Could we be having a ski season this year? Fingers crossed we will be in the ski groove this season. Some of our regional ski resorts suffered fire damage, and some have been working hard for every inch of snow. So get your P Tex and iron out and watch some Greg Stump films like the Groove Requiem or Blizzard of Aahhs to get in the mood. Stay tuned for the 2021 Ski Season and check these sites regularly.

W E I Mani Grewal V R INTE
November and Thanksgiving are really all about family. We live in a community that is great for families and a great place to grow up. We are fortunate that we live in a really diverse community, rich with different cultures, traditions, foods, music and so much more. It is with this that we work hard to try to find our common issues to make our community better. Manmeet “Mani” Grewal was born and raised in Modesto and is a product of Modesto Junior College and UOP’s School of Management. Mani became familiar with local government as a member of the Planning Commission and served as Modesto City Councilperson. He was appointed to the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors in November 2020. Mani and his wife Jas farm in the community and own and operate dental offices throughout Stanislaus County. In addition, they are very active in the Sikh community and are raising four children in Modesto. This is truly an active and involved family and I have been proud to work with Mani on many local issues and projects like the 911 Remembrance events, the Graffiti Cruise Walk of Fame and appreciate his support for the Graffiti USA Museum project that will drive a big boost in tourism in our area. Let’s get to know Mani. ModestoView: What do you love most about living in the Central Valley? Mani Grewal: Firstly, I truly believe that this is a great place to raise a family. There is great education, and many things to do in the area. In addition, I love the people of the Central Valley— they are direct and honest. The Central Valley is also a very diverse region with many people from different backgrounds. MV: When did your family move to the Modesto area? MG: My parents came to Modesto in 1972, and I was born at Memorial and never left the area! I went to the Sipherd Elementary and Johansen High School and completed my schooling at MJC and UOP. I am proud to call Modesto my only home! MV: When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up? MG: When I was younger my choices of profession were business, practicing law, or be an elementary yard duty— the yard duty was always cutting my recess time short!
12
MV: How did you and your wife Jas meet? MG: I met my wife in college while we were students at the University of Pacific. MV: What was it that made you want to stay in Modesto after college? MG: Modesto is my home. My family, friends, and community all reside here. I knew that I wanted to start my career and family in Modesto. MV: What made you want to go into public service? MG: Public service is a way to give back to the community. My parents always told me
MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE
that the community has given us so much, and this is just one way to give back to it. I think so much can be accomplished when you have people who look to work together. I want to emulate that through my public service. MV: You see both sides of our economy, as a government leader as well as a developer; what do you think we need to do to improve our planning and development? MG: We need to act to bring good paying jobs to Modesto. No one will do this for us. The County and City must lead in
By Chris Murphy creating an environment that attracts good businesses and jobs to our region. The bureaucracy should be a partner to our business community, not an obstacle. MV: Our region has a very active Sikh community and you and your family is very active, is there anything that you would want people to understand about Sikhism? MG: Although the attire may be different, the values are the same. Hardworking, law-abiding, good neighbors and sharing our blessings are the cornerstone of the religion. MV: What would you say the biggest obstacle that our community needs to tackle in the next 12 months? MG: We need action, not words, on addressing our housing shortage, good paying jobs, public safety, and COVID-19 recovery. I believe that if we come together and work as a community we can make progress on these issues that have plagued us for too long. MV: If budget were unlimited, what would you implement in our community to accelerate our economic development. MG: If I had an unlimited budget I would bring more attractions, like the Graffiti Museum and Children’s Museum. In addition I would work to beautify our county and cities— especially when it comes to parks and trees! MV: Thinking about the future, what are you the most excited about MG: Opportunity in Stanislaus County outpaces our challenges. I am confident that we can work together to take advantage of all of these opportunities by coming to the table and taking action. MV: Describe your ideal day in Modesto MG: I would start my day by taking a walk on Virginia corridor or Dry Creek Trail. I then would have breakfast at My Garden Cafe and then play basketball with my kids. For lunch I would have a home cooked meal with my wife Jas and family. I would then catch a movie at Brenden Theatre and have dinner at a downtown restaurant! MV: Beatles or Stones? MG: Beatles for sure!

comfort food season It is fall, it is comfort food season.
By Chris Murphy
I want warm food, savory food and something that is a little bit different. I don’t know about you, but I am pretty over Pumpkin Spice. So as we approach Thanksgiving, what can we enjoy that that has that warmth, a wonderful taste and will just make your taste buds come alive? The answer my friends is butternut squash. This tasty squash is not only cool looking, it really brings happiness to food, in ravioli, in soups, in pasta and so much more. Just like strawberries in the spring, cherries and corn in summer, we have pumpkin and butternut squash in October in November. But just where can you find this tasty treat? And how easy is it to cook with it? We have your answer and there are many ways you can enjoy this treat. In our area, butternut squash soup is the most common. I have tried many of them, and they are all different, some spicy and some rich and creamy. More of a reach is butternut squash ravioli. When you see this on a menu, my advice to you is order it immediately. So let’s do some squash exploration. First things first. These are easy to roast in your own oven and they are available at most of our local grocery stores and at the Modesto Certified Farmer’s Market. They are pretty slick, you can cut them in half, scoop the seeds and glaze with your favorite accent and bake. Et voila, the transformations begin.
Now is where the fun begins. Food Fix
First, when you stop reading this and get browsing on Instagram or TikTok, look no further than Marco @Woodfire-whiskey. He is posting some great recipes and easy preparations, and he has whipped up an amazing butternut squash soup, and showing you how to make it. Matching it up with a sandwich, he finishes with some of his favorite whiskeys. It’s a good combo meal deal. Check out this and his other culinary and whiskey paired treats. Now we head to 11th Street to Food Fix Located on 11th Street, Ashley Olsen has created a butternut squash soup, beginning with squash from her garden, and now with hand selected squash. Ashley is the craftiest in the kitchen and really created a tangy yet smooth roasted butternut squash soup that pairs nicely with their slaw. Once you try this, you are going to want to enjoy the rest of the menu and try her cookies for dessert that are out if this world. Around the corner, we find Concetta on J Street - Paul Tremayne always has something interesting to serve. Fresh off his trip to Italy, Paul’s butternut squash raviolis are inspired super unique, in a really good way. Not made from the traditional pasta, these incredible treats are made with won ton that gives them a really good texture and a nice bite. The butternut squash is enhanced with maple syrup and nutmeg and cooked. Prior to plating, the raviolis are quickly sautéed in brown butter to finish and then plated with a Romano cheese. These are a dream to eat, they are big and they are satisfying. Paul paired our raviolis with a Grace and Ada Grenache which made this experience perfect and left me wanting more. You better eat early to get these as Paul only makes enough for 10 -12 orders nightly. They are on the menu from November 1 to February 13. Then we mozied on to Fuzio on 10th Street The trees in 10th St Plaza are changing colors and Fuzio is loaded with fall flavors and seasonal cocktails. The butternut squash soup is really refined and rich, sprinkled with sage, with fresh bread and butter. Thomas and Chef Justin normally like to put a nice spin on traditional flavors, but in this case, it isn’t necessary. The serving was just the right size and paired perfectly with a Rombauer Chardonnay. Fuzio, 1020 10th St, Modesto 209-5579711 @fuziobistro
Burleys When I reached out on Facebook to explore butternut squash options, nearly everyone told me about Burly’s. It’s a cryin’ shame that I haven’t been there already as it is a fantastic place, staffed with an ex-Mallards team with chef Mike Ortiz. The entire menu is tempting but their butternut squash soup is nicely spiced, topped with candied walnuts, crème fraise and some fried kale paired with a William Hill Chardonnay. It is so smooth, I had to have a second bowl and Chef Mike and the regulars there make it a great time. You need to look closely to find it, but it is worth it and you will be back. Please check out Burly’s at 1219 N. Carpenter Rd. Suite 5. Modesto 209-3129400 @Burlyscaliforniabistro

Galletto The presentation of these butternut squash raviolis is beautiful. This year they have a new plate that spreads out the square raviolis so that each one gets the perfect amount of crumbled goat cheese and a delicious citrus beurre blanc. Add to this a sage walnut pesto and this is one of the most delicious raviolis you can get. The tangy goat cheese and citrus really bring out the butternut flavor. I paired this with a chardonnay and loved every bite. Finally, every piece of focaccia soaked up any extra buerre blanc and goat cheese. This is featured on the menu. Galletto Ristorante 1101 J Street, Modesto 209-523-4500 @gallettoristo Verona Cucina Italiano The Italian flavors from the Jaime and Edwarda Alderete are always wonderful. I regularly enjoy their rich flavors and comfortable dining room or the bar. Every fall, butternut squash raviolis will find their way to my plate. They are not currently on the menu, but you can ask for them and the supply is limited, so don’t dilly dally. Verona 1717 McHenry Ave, Suite 46 209-549-8876 @veroniacucina Chefs of New York Just got word from Vinnie and Kim Altadonna that butternut squash ravioli with a creamy tarragon sauce will be on the menu in November. I am so excited. Their raviolis all year long are on point and now that they have a full bar and live music on the weekends, it is quite the place and they are open daily at 7 am. 918 13th St Modesto 209-857-5102 @chefsofnewyorkdowntown We also received great comments about LaMo in Turlock Gervasoni’s out on N. McHenry Ciao Bella in Century Center Velvet Creamery on McHenry And many people’s home kitchens. We will continue to search for butternut squash and will update this month with the #butternut tag. As always, ModestoView is out there looking for the tastiest treats for your fall flavors. #eatlocal

Modesto’s population is approximately 216,810, it is the 19th largest city in California. What does that ultimately mean? There are a lot of people living in and around Modesto. Statistics show that about 68% of what is spent locally is reinvested in the community. Remember that statistic. Independent businesses return back into the community more than three times as much money per dollar of sales than chain competitors. How can we grow our local economy? What I am suggesting is if we all just switch our spending, even just a little it will add up to a huge impact. Even $5, the price of a cup of coffee at one of those corporate cafes. That minute amount adds up in a very large way. We want to make sure all our favorite places are still serving us when things return to normal. We are going to want to go out and eat, get our hair cut or have a spa day. Not everyone that lives in Modesto is in a position to spend even $20 extra while we wait. Let us remove the very young and old and the unemployed that is somewhere around 40% of Modesto’s population. Let us for good measure and to make it easier round that number up to 50%. 50% is 108,405. That is still a large number of people. If each of us spends just an average of $20 on gift certificates or deliveries from local Cafes and Restaurants, Hair Salons, Spas and other locally owned businesses that amount adds up to $2,168,100 in just a month. In a year’s time, that comes to $26,017,200. What a generous amount of money to give to invest in our Community, in our friends and neighbors. Remember I told you to not forget about that statistic of 68%? Those local businesses you are supporting spend a significant amount of that back locally in your shops and restaurants. employee your friends and family. That is an extra 1,474,308 each month going back into the local economy. This is a compounded effect. Maybe instead you want to buy gifts for the holidays? There are several great artists, crafters and artisans that you can support and get unique gifts for your loved ones. Gift Certificates to places that host Live Music and plays make fantastic gifts too. Pledge to go out and support your Community when things get back to normal. Shop local, shop small and remember together we can make an incredible impact!

T S E V R A H & FALL
miss this holiday season. Well that’s fine with me as we need to look local this year and make sure we are all about the local businesses that got hammered during Covid. Think about it, we spend the last 20 months purging and cleaning our homes, do we need more stuff? If we do, let’s make it count. I worked for a Japanese guy in my late 20s and he told me, “the best thing you can collect is experiences”. That is so very true. Let’s collect what really means something. Dinner out with friends, a road trip through the hills, something hand made, shopping at a local boutique, seeing a play or concert or maybe even ice skating. So let’s make this season about experiences and let’s keep our oh so precious dollars and bitcoins local and when it gets to Black Friday and Shop Small Saturday and Giving Tuesday, let’s remember our friends and their businesses or organizations.
Black Friday Tips Fall. I love it. I think most people like fall, especially when we get a bit of rain to start it off like we did. This morning, the air was cool, chilly even, and it turned out to be a beautiful day, for work, for walking, riding, and eating dinner on your own or a downtown patio or parklet. I know I am up for all of the above. There is a feeling you get in fall that is hard to explain; the anticipation of the holidays, putting away the jack-o-lantern and bringing out the squash, maple syrup in your whiskey, and of course, cleaning the leaves out of your gutters. Fall makes you want do drive around, cruise the hills, check out a sunset that happens so early, watch the leaves turn and maybe stop and linger for a bit where you would normally speed through. As you enjoy your explorations, make sure you tag your photos #modestoview so we can ride along with you and share your experiences. Most importantly, enjoy your Thanksgiving Day. Turn off your phones, your Socials, and just enjoy the moments. The best businesses are closed, and their families are home too. Being thankful for family and friends is the most important thing. Oh and for the record, November is the month of Thanksgiving. It’s not Christmas yet, so at least at my house, the Christmas décor will be up after Thanksgiving and Black Friday. Since we are talking about Black Friday, let’s chat a bit about what we can do this year. Hundreds, maybe thousands of ocean containers are backed up bringing import goods in. Many of them will

Our advice, stay out of the long lines and spend this day shopping with our local stores. Or you can do like we do over the last few years and do a downtown Modesto Pub Crawl. You will feel so relieved to not be shopping, but cruising around with your friends, supporting local restaurants and cafes and truly enjoying the day after Thanksgiving.
November 27Shop Local on Small Business Saturday.
This is the day when it is all about our local economy. When you shop local, you are not buying a CEO their third beach house, you are helping someone put their kids through school, play soccer and support the local business people that are the first to give back to the community. It really is true; Amazon is not going to sponsor your kids’ soccer team. They may spend billions going to space, but that doesn’t help us here on the ground. Support the people that are investing in our community so we should invest in them too. We do business here with our friends and we need to keep our $ local.
Giving Tuesday
November 30 is the day to really lend a hand, and find some non-profits that need your assistance. This is a national/ global day of giving. Make sure you help a non-profit that puts the funds in the programs, not overhead. Even small donations can make a big difference. #givingtuesday

Big Earl: I started off doing wire sculpture when I was working at camp Jack hazard in 1994. I started with telephone wire and worked my way up to Bear copper wire. I made sculptures of bugs and symbols and sometimes I made baskets. I continue doing that for years and would show my stuff in galleries when I lived up in Humboldt County. Mostly it was just for fun and occasionally I would sell pieces or do custom work. During the pandemic, I came across my wire sculpture tools and brought them into the house and washed them off and haven’t looked back. Now I’m mostly doing jewellery and wearable art but I still enjoy doing sculptures and always have at least a few out at my table during events. You can find me at Big Earl’s Wire Works on FB or IG

Fall Excursions
Did you know that salmon spawn the first two weeks of November? What is salmon spawning? It’s when salmon run up the river to their spawning grounds (where they deposit their eggs.) The salmon, which have migrated from the ocean, swim to the upper reaches of rivers where they spawn on gravel beds. After spawning, all Pacific salmon and most Atlantic salmon die, and the salmon life cycle starts over again. Basically the rivers are packed with bright, pink, red salmons and it’s a beautiful sight, so pack up the kids and get going! One of the best places to watch are from Roberts River Ferry Bridge or at the Knights Ferry— only 30 minutes from Modesto on Highway 132 or Highway 120/108! While you are at it, stop by Roberts Ferry Nut Company for a milk shake. My fave is the fresh banana. Once you get that far, check out historic LaGrange, or cruise on up to Couterville. Heck, since you are going, check out Groveland and even go up into Yosemite. This drive is simply beautiful when the trees are changing. BIG VIEW Modesto on Ice
Ice skating in Downtown Modesto is back! We missed our friends at Modeston On Ice last year and now it is time to lace up our skates again. ModestoView and Sierra Pacific are proud sponsors again for the reopening of this great family and fun event. Skating sessions are daily from November from November 20 all the way through January 17th. There will be many theme nights, group skates and it is really easy to learn how to skate. Many have given of their talents, time and hearts all in support of the children served by Community Hospice’s Pediatric Palliative Care Program. Each beautifully decorated tree and wreath will be up for auction on Handbid starting November 6th. Participants may visit the stores of McHenry Village to view and bid on the beautiful trees and wreaths and complete the Fantasy of Trees Passport for a chance to win a $500 Visa card that can be used at the participating Merchants of McHenry Village. Premier Raffle Tree Tickets are available for purchase Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. by calling the Community Hospice Foundation at 209-578-6370. Proceeds raised from Fantasy of Trees support Community Hospice’s Pediatric Care Programs, including palliative care, hospice and grief support for children and their families. UNPLUGGED VIEW
The SongRemembers When
Welcome, dear reader, to the 100th UnpluggedView column. Here’s something special to mark this milestone: stories from a few of the great creative people I’ve worked with over the years, about pieces of music that carry a special meaning and the true-life tales that accompany them.
ROY STEVENS (General Director, Opera Modesto): In 2012 I had the remarkable opportunity to perform the role of Skanderbeg, the national hero of Albania, during that country’s centennial anniversary of independence. Skanderbeg was an amazing man, general and literate diplomat from the fifteenth century. It is pretty crazy that a non-Albanian would have this honor. It was partly that the head of the Albanian National Theater & Opera wanted to honor the American presidents who helped Albania achieve and retain independence, and partly that I suited the role. The opera, ‘Skanderbeu’ by Prenk Jakova, is one of the most important operas composed in the northern dialect of Albanian from the 1400s. So, for the native Albanians, it was very challenging because of the ancient dialect. For me, it was, well, just Albanian! The music is beautiful and distinctive. I was the only non-Albanian in this production on the national stage of Albania, then in Macedonia and finally at the World Albanian Diaspora Concert at the Arena of Geneve in Switzerland. An experience and honor I will never forget; an opportunity to represent my own country in a way not normally given to performers, and to honor the fine people of Albania. ALZARA GETZ (award-winning songwriter/ bandleader of Brother Spellbinder): After three years away at graduate school for social work in Pennsylvania, I returned to my apartment in San Francisco. As I walked around the neighborhood, admiring the beauty of the architecture and feeling home again in the Bay Area, a melody came into my head with the words “20 Years Ago.” I quickly recorded the idea on voice memos. Later I realized it had been exactly 20 years since I had moved with my son into the very same apartment. But 20 years ago, I expected my life to be something entirely different. I had hopes and dreams that never materialized and others I never imagined that did. The song represents a sense of lost innocence, yearnSubscribe to our You Tube channel at: youtube.com/modestoview
by Aaron Rowan & friends ing and idealism. When you find you’ve returned to the place where you were, you may ask yourself: Am I going backwards? Is this some karmic circle? Did I fail or succeed? What do I know now that I didn’t know then? AARON ROWAN (concert curator/scene supporter): In late June of 2017, I embarked on the second of three tours that year with a mesmerizing songwriter from the mountains of Colorado. At that time my assorted musical duties included serving as her tour manager. This particular journey was a train adventure of the kind I enjoy so much, which took us on a meandering route south with views of the Pacific, through the blazing desert landscapes and forest towns of Arizona, into New Mexico with its lovely earth colors and architecture, and finally full circle to Colorado Springs, one of my favorite destinations. Days spent surrounded by works of art forged both by the natural world and by the minds and hands of humans. Nights filled with “music for the haunting” as her bio phrases it. But the greatest musical payoff for me came after the tour ended, sitting in my travel companion’s backyard not long after a light summer rain. She busted out her guitar and belted out her rendition of ‘Barbara Allen,’ a Scottish ballad dating back to the 1600s, as I trained my video camera on her. Whenever I rewatch that song (which can be found on the Modesto Unplugged Youtube channel) I feel the longing to be back wandering the streets of the Springs. DONNA PHILLIPS (music educator & enthusiast) Sometimes a particular song becomes part of your soul with one wondrous, magnificent moment moving you profoundly. It happened for me when, after a traumatic injury left me unable to walk until major surgery, I grabbed an unmarked cassette tape to listen to as I drove for the first time in four months. It was a rainy, dreary day on the road as the music started to play. At the exact moment, I heard the lyrics “At the end of a storm there’s a golden sky,” the clouds literally parted and shafts of glorious light streamed down! I had come full circle, for the cassette was an acapella recording I made of my own singing during my most bleak time. I had listened to it to repeatedly over the past year for inspiration. What a finale that day - truly at the END of a personal storm and highLIGHTED with a Song and a Golden Sky!

SONG WRITER VIEW November is a reminder to be grateful. What we have all been through has led us to this place, this new normal. I am thankful for my tribe of support escorting me to this time. Gracias por todo from the bottom of my heart. I am grateful for all of the people who have been trying to be a source of positivity during these crazy times and posting pictures and videos of what they are creating and sharing good news and bad news so that we can all be reminded that we are in this together. I’m grateful to those fan followers who are helping to keep artists alive by continuing to tip virtually even when we don’t always have something going because we are still not fully open and the surge and the viral variants continue to thrive in our county. I’m giving you a no-frills look at what some songwriters have going on. This month there are great choices for entertainment. I’ve been fangirling of Ava Grace these days. The songwriting is thoughtful and melodic and has radio quality. Ava joins forces for a slick show at the State Theater on Saturday, November 20 at 6 pm with her band Gravel and Grace(a collaborative effort with local Bluesman, Earl Matthews) and Earl’s central claim to fame the Cryin’ Shame. Koala & the Golden Boy have evolved into a fully electric option called Horizon Point. You can find them at Ralston’s Goat on Friday, November 5 playing original and

cover material. A very personal and poignant program hosted by Modesto’s Alzheimer Dementia Support Center Inc comes to the State Theater on November 12. A viewing of Roberto Carlo Chiesa’s film “Inside My Being” followed by a Q & A session with an Alzheimer panel and some personal insights of my own experience with music and memory and I’ll perform some songs with personal connections to losses I’ve known from this dreaded disease. This educational event is an affordable $5 and begins at 6 pm. The Modesto Certified Farmers Market Thursday markets end this month but there is still plenty of time to enjoy the great bounty of our county. Live music continues at the market through December. Please come out and say hello on Thursday, November 4 and enjoy my collaboration with Drum Love’s Dave Rogers as we play all kinds of tunes for all the kinds of people.

Twist & Shout
By Tasha Wilson
Katie Clawson loves to dance! But even more than dancing, she loves to help people. Most of all, her joy comes from assisting senior citizens and she is constantly looking for ways to help them feel better physically. As an Occupational Therapist, she incorporates dance into her sessions, sharing the many benefits that come along with this activity. Katie has been dancing since 2013, but in 2018, she experienced some physical challenges that began to affect her health. Her stamina was fleeting, and she was forced to stop dancing on her feet. However, Katie refused to give up! She would not allow her weakening body to fail her 100%. So, she did what was in her heart: SHE DANCED! Katie decided to try healing her own body and she began thinking outside of the box. Instead of dancing upright, (and on her feet), she started dancing in a seated position and made immediate progress. Her overall health began to improve. Her coordination was better, and she was feeling good. Her positive outlook took over completely, and she thought about ways she could help others who may be in a similar situation. Specifically, she began to think of senior citizens whose mobility might be on the decline. After imagining all the possibilities, she started a “seated” dance group while at work, (in a hospital setting), with six patients at a time. Katie stated, “While working with my patients in the hospital setting, I knew I definitely wanted my class to be seated. So many elderly people have issues with pain in their hips and knees,
stamina, and/or balance issues and a few of my patients have been over 100 years old.” The class was a hit and Katie ended up bringing her creative thoughts to fruition by teaching a FREE “Seated Senior Class” at Love2Dance Modesto, in 2020/2021, (via Zoom), due to Covid19. Katie danced there for five years, (before her health challenges began). When she shared her idea with the owners, they were completely on board. Fondly reflecting on the dance studio and the owners, Katie went on to say, “They are the most inclusive studio I’ve ever seen. They teach toddlers all the way through seniors, and the owners are a mother and daughter team – Meg Harter and Michelle Rau. It is truly a wonderful place.” Katie Clawson’s class takes place every Thursday, (except holidays), at Luv2Dance, located at 3604 Oakdale Road, Modesto, CA. To enroll, you must be 58 years of age or older, wheelchairs are welcome, and all physical issues are encouraged to participate. From Katie’s perspective, “Dance is unlike any other exercise. It’s fun and not repetitious like regular exercise. It works on so many components of the nervous system and muscular system. It allows you to utilize your coordination, timing, rhythm, memory, integrating the body and extremities in unison. Most of us have seen YouTube videos of Parkinson’s patients unable to move or walk in silence, but who can move their bodies to music. Anyone can dance. Everyone SHOULD dance. Music is powerful. Dance is powerful. There is no rule that states dancing cannot happen seated, where many seniors feel safer!” Who can argue with Katie Clawson’s positivity? Finally, I asked our signature question, “The Stones or the Beatles?” Katie replied, “The Beatles, because I like to dance to Twist and Shout!”

The MAMA’s were back live with a big dose of normalcy returning to the State Theatre! Winners and losers but we are back together with live music. It will be challenging as the weather changes, “I’m beginning to feel a Chill” as the song goes, but we will persevere. I am excited to be able to bring live music to Chef ’s of New York with Jazz on Fridays and Blues and Roots music on Saturdays as of November. The lineup for November: 5th Blue Monday Band, 6th Thunder Roads,12th John King Duo Jazz guitar, 13th Shad Harris, 19th John Albano Jazz guitar, 20th Tony & the Tough Times, Chicago Blues, 26th John Adey’s Jazz Experience with Andrew Rosenblum, Dave Hawkes & Michael Soria, 27th RJ Hass Band/ Blues, Santana. vocals and Eric Benson Keys. We play jazz, funk, Latin and the Blues. The jam goes from 7-10 PM with a full bar and great food! Chris Murphy at the MAMA’s brought up that we need a fullservice music house like we used to have with the Fat Cat Music House. I hope we can put this together as we have the musicians, and we have the audience; we just need to build it and they will come. A lot of my peeps are still on the fence about coming out to see a show even with social distancing and precautions in place. I encourage all to get vaccinated and be cautious but not fearful! This is our world, and we all need to get on with the business of living. The State Theatre is back in business with shows, check out their site for the lowdown: www.theState.org, and Modesto Unplugged: Dirty Cello Nov 14th at Valley Music Institute: www.modestounplugged.com. And I encourage all to take a trip to Yoshi’s Restaurant and Night club Jack London Square Oakland. It is a world-class venue for Jazz and live music that managed to survive the pandemic and is back open. Well, the pandemic will be around for a while but in the meantime, we have to continue to support our economy and businesses that support the arts. We are trying to do more live events outside with social distancing to keep people safer and inside shows with smaller capacity. All we need is for you to come out and be part of the scene! All the best Eric Benson, peace out!

GRAFFITI USA VIEW By Chris Murphy
The world got its first glimpse of the vision of the Graffiti USA Museum at our first open house. Nearly 2000 people walked through, checked out the cars, the exhibits and got a taste of what this amazing museum experience will be like. Each theme room was stage to give an idea of what can be. Not only were there cars, there were the legendary KFIV radio DJs spinning the hits all weekend while the Board of Directors and Advisers gave tours. The gift store was jumping’ and people were very excited to meet the amazing and legendary Gene Winfield, creator of some of the most amazing cars ever built, with cars appearing in Star Trek, Bewitched, Batman, Man from UNCLE and so much more. The Graffiti USA Museum is located less than a mile from Gene’s shop on Tully Rd. It was a wonder weekend and great to see people get so excited.

Take the Week Off
By Efren Martinez
You are faithful in your daily fitness routine. Each day you work out and although you switch it up it seems that you’re not seeing any new results. Yes, you’ve plateaued. It does not have to be this way. Although in most cases it is true that if you stop working out for three days you start to lose your fitness conditioning. That’s OK! It’s like this, sometimes you have to take one step back to go three steps forward. If your workouts have become easier for you over time and you’re asking yourself at bedtime, did I run 8 miles this morning and just forget? It’s time to take a week off. Unlike tapering off slowly before a race, taking an entire week off can have some very positive results in your fitness endeavors and overall attitude. What I’ve found is that if you take a week off from fitness your body starts to lose its daily fitness memory of some sort. Not to worry muscle has memory! Meaning that your

strength and muscles will come back after taking long periods of time off from working them out. So go ahead and take that week off from fitness. Do other things that don’t involve fitness but still are centered in a healthy way of life. You’ll find that when you come back to your fitness routine after a week it will be more challenging than it was the last time you worked out and that’s a good thing. You always want to feel a bit of exhaustion and some good fitness pain after each workout. This means that your body benefited the most from your workout. You’ll also find that doing this a few times a year will improve your yearly fitness results as well as open your mind to other cool things in life outside of your same weekly regimen. That’s just straightup good and healthy. Give it a try, you’ll be glad you did. Follow me at www.facebook.com/QuakeFitness & www.facebook.com/quakedj

HISTORY VIEW
Longtime Downtown Business Gem
By Harrison Power
Since the days of Downtown Modesto being the bustling center of commerce and the community, we have seen numerous shops and restaurants over the years have to contemplate moving to another location or closing altogether. The demolition of historic homes to business fronts was one reason, city growth and opening of the mall being another. Because of this, there is a decreasing number of businesses and tenants who can truly claim a longtime standing serving customers downtown – among them is Cavanna’s Jewelry, which has provided Modestans with watch repair and jewelry expertise for over 100 years. Moreover, this downtown icon has been a Cavanna family tradition. If you stop in Cavanna’s Jewelry today at 1014 J Street in the first floor of the beautiful Beaty Building, you will be warmly greeted by Norman Cavanna ready to assist you with repairs or questions however he can. The family background in watch repair and jewelry began with Norman’s father, Cesar Cavanna. An immigrant from Italy, Cesar Cavanna opened his first
watch repair shop in the early 1900’s at 1010 H Street after moving to Modesto. His specialization was in “high grade Swiss and complicated watch repairing” as highlighted regularly in the Modesto News-Herald. Norman Cavanna was born in 1935, and ultimately followed in his father’s footsteps studying watchmaking in Oakland and learning the latest fine watch and jewelry techniques. It was when his father retired that Norman carried on the family name
and business – in 1964 he and his wife Mollie opened a new Cavanna’s Jewelry at 1019 J Street. That address, of course, being located in the Hotel Covell, and where Cavanna’s called home for 28 years. When the City of Modesto deemed the historic building unsafe amid announcement of the Tenth Street Plaza redevelopment project, and with no solid plan to revitalize the beauty and glory of the hotel, many of its tenants began to leave. According to a 1997 issue of the Modesto Bee, Norman and Mollie Cavanna were the last business tenants of the Hotel Covell to leave. They moved into their present location in the Beaty, across the street from their former storefront. And it is from here now that Norman himself continues providing Modesto with unquestionable passion and knowledge of his craft. My wife and I recently stopped in for a watchband adjustment and to see if there was any hope

left in my great-grandfather’s 1965 Bulova Accutron, and Norman even had original tools distributed by Bulova when the Accutron hit store shelves. It may take some time he said, but it was clear he was the man to trust. He can assist with any watch and jewelry repair needs, with likely few curveballs that could be thrown at him. Gratitude Season
As a prelude to the busiest season of the year, November often helps us remember our gratitude for the wonderful things our community has to offer. Often we forget to drop by our favorite restaurant or stop to view the artwork in local shops. Upon returning home this afternoon from fall and soon-to-be jolly shopping, running errands and grabbing a quick bite at Deva Cafe, Ms M realizes she enjoys both the fun and functional this time of year. Here are some ways to save on the fun so you can afford your functional. The world is a stage and starting weekend November 12th through the 21st, Prospect Theater Project presents their production of The Humans by Tony award-winning playwright Stephen Karam. Which is a drama about family and the tradition of thanksgiving, which is relatable this time of year. Grab a few hours of R&R by joining PTP for a performance that will encourage the arts and performers in our community. Tickets: GA $25. By Monica Barber are all hustle and bustle. On November 18th, Cheroot Cigar Lounge in Modesto will host one of its renowned comedy nights with the best local and bay area comedians to serve up the laughs. The show starts at 8 pm. Get your tickets early as this event tends to sell out and the seats fill up early. Tickets: $20. Info: https://www. eventbrite.com/e/cheroot-comedy-nighttickets-165048196599 A wild and swingin’ party is just the right way to head into the holiday season and close out the month. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is back in town at the Gallo Center for The Arts on November 26th and it promises to be a wonderful time for all. Pick up tickets for what will no doubt be a thrilling and rocking evening to remember filled with your favorite holiday classics ala swing and jazz style. Tickets start at $29 and up. Show: 7:30pm. Info: https://tickets. galloarts.org/8274/8275 Welcome back Small Business Saturday! Modesto’s Downtown Improvement District will be abuzz on November 27th and downtown is better than ever. Come, shop local on Small Business Saturday at all the showcased businesses, and remember you are supporting your friendly neighborhood shops and vendors. Do not forget to grab a warm tea or hot chocolate at Preservation Coffee if you are on J Street while you shop in Downtown Modesto. I hope you all had a wonderful Halloween. I spent my time with friends and family, as well as eating sweet treats. Fall is by far one of the most beautiful seasons we have here. November is the month to remember what we are thankful for. I am so grateful to live in a place that brings out so much beauty during this season. I love watching all of the leaves turn different colors and feeling the air get crisp. The fall colors are arriving, and our beloved Modesto ash trees foliage comes upon us. One of my favorite things about Fall is all of the yummy things my mom and I bake. Every Fall, my mom and I bake these delicious vegan chocolate chip pumpkin muffins. Try and find some time to cook or bake with family this month. For some more pleasure this season, I recommend checking out some fun corn mazes in our area. I love Dutch Hollow farms. It is super family-friendly, and it is located right here in Modesto at 4524 Milnes Road. They have a corn maze, pumpkin patches, games, a petting zoo, and so much more. A farm day pass is

$12, and children two and under are free! Be sure to head there in Spring as well because they sell their beautiful tulips. I go every year with my family, and it is one of the highlights of the season. This month, I would like to take the time to talk about one of my newest favorite spots to visit in Modesto. The Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum! I visited during their recent open house. This is one of the most incredible places on the old Historic US99, about a mile from the original Burges drive-in! It displays many different vintage and classic cars, as well as interesting facts about each vehicle. For example, It was fascinating to see a 1932 Ford five-window coupe and realize this was built the same year my great-grandmother was born. Visiting this museum cemented my dream that, yes, one day, I would have a convertible. Check it out on N 9th street. I highly recommend taking a peek! I hope everyone enjoys their Fall as much as I will and has a wonderful season!

ZEN VIEW ‘Tis the Season
By Mary Layton I cannot believe it has come around again, the season of sweaters, hats and boots! And I’m not quite ready for it yet. This year I feel a bit rushed, time is flying by faster than usual. It seemed like I was just in the middle of so many projects at home, trying to catch up and now it’s time to eat Turkey again! But Thanksgiving is truly a wonderful holiday. Finally friends and family have a good reason to get to together for some really good food and to remember to be grateful. Having gone through many issues last year I am looking forward to it. It seems as though we were battling an unfamiliar storm system, getting tossed this way and that way, not knowing where we would land. But despite the fact that the world has been faced with so much uncertainty, stopping and going again, ups and downs and many losses; in general people were able to be resilient and adapt. Of course, recovery still feels slow in some places and then when things do get going, it feels like
we have to hurry to get everything back on track again. Speaking for myself, I think I have tried to go with the punches and stay the course, just keep going and concentrate on what is right in front of me. Whenever possible I make sure to get some rest, relax and do things I enjoy around town, like going out to a restaurant, or go listen to a local band. We are so lucky that we have access to great entertainment at the Gallo Arts Center. What a great variety of shows, concerts, operas and ballets to choose from! It’s such a welcome relief and truly transforms my outlook. Thank God that live food for our spirit is more accessible again. There always will be new challenges and controversies. Focusing on myself and becoming more aware when my own behavior prevents me from being a better person, I feel that I have actually come to understand some basic truths. I can achieve personal progress when I try to be more accepting in situations involving my relationships with family, friends and co-workers, even strangers. I believe that no matter what happens that one can reinvent oneself. Even when all the doors are closed there maybe one that is open. ‘Tis the season to feel some magic. Have a great Thanksgiving! GoModesto:
Skank on Down to Congregation Beth Shalom on November 6th 7pm for a Reggae Dance Party. This chance to see two of the areas best reggae artists in one location for just $10. The multiple MAMA award-winning reggae band A La Lune is an area favorite with their big brass sound and cool rhythms. Honey B is a California artist with a positive approach and a Caribbean twist. She spent over a decade in the West Indies where “country life” and island culture made a deep impression on her ideals and musicality. Her reggae flavored vocals, delivered in what’s known as a “singjay” style, offer a fresh and futuristic sound with a respectful nod to Jamaica’s musical pioneers.
