Aaaaahh Fall.

There is just something magic about this time of year.  It is chilly when I go out each morning to pick up my newspapers.  Yes, I get three newspapers, the Modesto Bee, SF Chronicle and the New York Times.  A nice cool morning with a cup of coffee, flipping the pages of a newspaper.  It is bliss.  Plus, there is something great about reading a newspaper, or a magazine like ModestoView as you can’t swipe left, or right and you read all sorts of things you hadn’t planned on reading.  That is where a good education comes from is reading and understanding the different things that happen in our world.  It’s different reading a printed page than a screen.

I think that the more time we take to read and learn the better decisions we make and become good critical thinkers, as opposed to just parroting the stuff on cable news.  This month, we take a deep dive in our local education as we meet and interview Dr. Sara Noguchi, Superintendent of Modesto City Schools.  It is a challenge to try to education a diverse group of people, and it gets harder all the time. So let’s take time to celebrate our teachers and those that take that challenge to educate the next generations.

October went by so fast, it seems like school started, we had the MAMA Awards and then it was Halloween all in the blink of an eye.  The tomato trucks are off the roads,

and the fall flavors start teasing us about the holidays.  I am a traditionalist.  November is for Thanksgiving all the way through Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a day off to be with family and friends.  At our house, the Christmas light switch doesn’t go on until the day after thanksgiving, and even then, I don’t get near a big box.  My time and my money stays at our locally owned businesses on Black Friday and Shop Small Saturday and especially at ModShop.  If you do it right, you can take care of all of your holiday giving on this one day in downtown Modesto, or at boutiques in McHenry Village.  You can always get a 55” TV, but you can’t always get a cool wonky felt creature or something hand made.  Make your giving count this year, Speaking of giving, there are people and families that are in need this year and we can all help.  I am proud to be one of the kettle bell ringers at the Salvation Army Kettle Kick Off with my Graffiti USA Museum colleagues and our Modesto Children’s Museum friends.  When you give, please make sure what you give goes directly to the programs that actually help people. I would be honored to take your Thanksgiv ing donation to the Salvation Army and make sure it goes to a good cause. Email me at Chrism@ModestoView.com if you would like to donate.  We can make a difference and do good for others, So let’s have some fun this month and enjoy

the live entertainment in town, the amazing harvest flavors with butternut squash and other fall tastes and cheer to the sounds of our favorite football teams and make sure we take time to get outside and take a deep breath and really enjoy, maybe even run a Thanksgiving 5K at the Turkey Trot Rockin’ Holiday is coming on December 3rd. We will light the Rockin’ Tree, enjoy the Rockin’ Snow, and hang out with Rockin’ Santa and create a lot of holiday memories. If you would like to help us or sponsor Rockin’ Holiday, please let me know.

Friends this has been a tough year for many and hard on our local businesses. That’s why ModestoView features our hard-working local companies and encourage you to visit them. We are so very thankful that we have local businesses that believe in ModestoView to be the beacon of good news and positive information.  Thanks to our ViewCrew, that each do their part to make Modesto better, and share what they are working on each month. Our ViewCrew are not just writers, they are the “doers” that create and make things happen and I am glad that we can help spread the good words.  Thanks to all of them, we are able to design, print and dis tribute ModestoView all across our county.  I am very thankful to you all.

Most of all, I am thankful for my family for being the true source of my energy and hap piness.  Everyday I am grateful that my kids live here in Modesto and we are able to share so much of our lives together.  I wish each and everyone of you a wonderful Thanksgiv ing and hope that you find the thanks that you need this fall as we take time to gather. And finally, VOTE on November 8.  If you believe in preserving our democracy and our individual rights, this is essential.

See you all out and about and please say hey if you get a chance,

With gratitude, Chris Murphy

Goodbye to Deva

There are some milestones that are hard to take sometimes.  First we lost Minnie’s, one of Modesto best and unique places.  Now we have lost Café Deva.  Deva has been a part of downtown Modesto’s fabric for over 25 years. It was very special to me as it was the first place I discovered downtown

when we moved back to Modesto in fall of 1996 and were living with our folks in Ripon.  A French café, lattes, breakfasts, and croissants in downtown Modesto!  It was perfect and reminded me of my time working in Europe, and Paris in particular.  Lorena Loftis built something amazing

and Heather Elkins made a valiant effort through COVID.  The music memories, the lunches, the Thursday Rambles, the Off the Airs, ModShops, the dinners and the great times and conversations will always be with us.  With good vibes like this, we are hope ful that someone will take this space and do something magic with it.

Deva always toasted guests with “à votre santé” and back to all of them “à la vôtre”

Fall Colors and ArtART VIEW

It is 15 years since I was invited to write this column, November 2007.  In the month of Thanksgiving, grateful for the opportunity to help promote local artists and art events.  A lot of Holiday pop-up shopping arts and crafts events, and the Return of ModShop downtown.  ModShop will be November 26th the Saturday after Black Friday.

I am marking the passing of time, with a personal 2023 Coffee Cats Calendar, featur ing my watercolor coffee cat paintings, with a special gallery edition available at the Mistlin Gallery and Chartreuse Muse, with an original sharpie sketch and signature.  For an unsigned calendar/planner, order online from Coffeecatscalendar.com

The Chartreuse Muse features owners Sandra Veneman and Ellen Roehne as the current show. The Muse celebrates some 20 years in Business. An anniversary party and reception will be held at the gallery, Satur day, November 5th, from 5 to 8 PM.  The event will debut the new 12 and 6-month collectable subscription project, Artfully Yours. 16 local artists in this first release.  Pricing and how it works can be explained with a visit to the Chartreuse Muse, as there are different price levels. An interesting Holiday gift purchase idea, and I am glad to be one of the artists invited.  Art creations are 3-inch square or less and feature draw ings, ceramic pieces, miniature sculptures, drawings, and collages by local artists.

At the end of September, DoMo Walls invited artists who scrambled to add new murals downtown in time for First Friday in the latest public mural festival.  New murals are located on 12th Street by FASM and Shane Grammer Arts.  1324 J Street

mural by Camer1. Joel Aguilar painted the image on the back wall of the State Theatre.

On the alley, next to J Street Starbucks the artists are Samuel Dominguez, Drigo and Patricia Pratt. Then there is the Boring De sign building, is the Darth Vader-dominat ed mural that gives credit to @maxxer242 and @weiser1er.  Check the DoMo Walls Facebook page for profiles on the artists, projects and full addresses to view this ad dition to downtown Modesto’s Identity.

Everlasting Beauty is the current show at the Mistlin Gallery.  Inspired works by the Complementary Therapy art group will be shown until November 19. This program of cancer survivors and caregivers culminates each year with a display of the journey these artists take on.  The Central California Art Association gift shop at Mis tlin features the art and restored vintage bicycles of Brian Swander, seen in the front entry window of the gallery.  Rounding out November is the opening of the 6 x 6 project fundraiser show, and the balance of the gallery the juried members Pets and Portraits exhibit.  Affordable holiday art in all sizes, many with a pet theme this year.

The third Thursday Art Walk is November 17th with the usual gang of venues, and local artists on the sidewalks and inside businesses.  The Downtown Art District feature local art and artists all year round, all month during business hours.  Many restaurants, and shops not mentioned in these 500 words have a lot to see, offer, something to eat or drink in an artful ambience.

It is also home to comedy, music and many community events for all ages.

Rodin Ranch FaRmeRs’ maRket: mixeRs & mocktails

Hot Toddy too, so we recommend that one as we get into the colder months! Yummy! Looking for snacks too? They have you covered. Fruit trays, nut trays, or grab a box of the Sugar Plums, and start a new tradition with your loved ones: made from local dried fruit and almonds, fresh honey, sugar and spices. Each sugar plum is made

moved to Modesto to operate the fam ily farms that would make Rodin one of Modesto’s most known farming families, growing almonds, cling peaches, nectarines, plums, pluots, apricots, grapes, freestone peaches, tomatoes and melons. Rodin became a name we all know and love. His daughters, Marie and Angie Rodin, took over the family business and in Decem ber 2014 they made a bold step to open a Farmers Market in downtown Modesto at the corner of 10th and J serving the freshest fruit from their farms and many of the products of her family & friend’s farms. Their shelves are lined with products like dried fruit, raw and flavored nuts, nut butters, elderberry syrup, honey, olive oil, popcorn, and fudge. Don’t forget to get a coffee to go-try the daily coffee special because you can’t go wrong with something like a peanut butter cup latte!

I hope you will enjoy making new memo ries this holiday season with Rodin Ranch’s lemonades and treats. Let the turkey eating commence and sip on, friends!

How do you host a holiday party with yum my drinks for everyone: those who partake as well as your beloved teetotalers and all the kiddos? Do you like mixing cocktails but have a toddler who wants to partake from your glass all the time? We all have family members who choose to abstain for all kinds of reasons, so how do you make them feel super special and included when they’re visiting your home?

My secret: Rodin Ranch’s homemade lemonades and juices! Oh, these are so delightful and refreshing! Rodin offers any flavor you could want, each made fresh daily: watermelon, peach, strawberry (or strawberry kiwi!), ginger, blackberry, man go, pineapple, and we’ve tried them all. At $6 for a half gallon, they’re a steal of a deal. They last 7 - 10 days in the fridge. If you’re coming up on the expiration date and have some left (which is doubtful-I bet this won’t last 24 hours in your house), make some

ice or popsicles with the remaining juice to consume later.

They can be mixed with alcohol and bitters for a delicious libation or served on their own for anyone who can’t have or doesn’t like alcohol. All you need is a fancy glass or flute to make your visitors feel like they are an integral part of your holiday cheer. And they will think you slaved to make that drink, when it really took you less than a minute!

Our favorite is the peach, followed closely by the pomegranate. They’re very versatile and bursting with flavor so you can drink it as is or if you’re creating a mixer just add a shot of rum or vodka to make a delicious beverage. Use any of the citrus based ones as a base for your Gin & Juice to change things up. No matter who is drinking your creations though, set a sprig of mint in it or give it a sugar rim so it looks picture perfect!  The Ginger makes a scrumptious

by-hand-to-order so they are always fresh. At $25 a box they are a steal!

The story of Rodin Ranch starts before 1969, but I’m going to start off in the Anthony Rodin chapter: at age 21 Anthony

Shop Small Buy Local

MAMA Thanks!

Shop Small Saturday is November 26th and I encourage everyone to continue the trend and Buy Local Art and Music for all your Holiday Gifts. Your purchases will help to keep our arts community vibrant and healthy. I want to challenge everyone who reads the ModestoView to go to a new local show this month. That would be over 150,000 additional attendees. 150,000 supporting local musicians, restaurants, bars and venues. At an average of $5 per person that would come to a $750,000(over 9 million a year if done monthly) support ing local musicians and businesses. What an easy and fun way to create and build a vibrant arts community.

So many of our area musicians have upped their merch game with T-Shirts to Skate boards. Pick up a Tee, CD and Patches, Horizon Point, Jeff Moore, and Aware all have new T-Shirts. Rockit Music Gear has tons of guitar straps, patch cables and more, locally made right here in Modesto www. rockitmusicgear.com

Metal bands Burning Bridges have released a new CD. 2X Americana winner Tiffany Rose and the Outlaw Hearts just celebrated the release of their debut, Chris Doud & the Salvage Co, BluesBox Bayou Band and the Flowers also have music for you to purchase.

I also encourage you to stop by and pick up a gift for yourself or a loved one from the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum, you can purchase a T-Shirt and show your sup port or give a tax-deductible donation in someone’s name.

Check out the Black HeARTs Market on the first Friday of each month to find unique crafts and custom art by some of the area’s most creative. You will not only put a smile on the face of a loved one, but you will keep Art Alive.

Additionally, you can support the local arts community by buying gift certificates to your favorite cafes, restaurants and bars that host live music and act as makeshift galleries.  So why not stop off at Ralston’s Goat, Queen Bean, and Contentment Brewing to name a few and pick up some stocking stuffers?

Don’t forget the Gallo Center, State Theatre and or the Prospect Theatre; all three are

non-profits and have events scheduled throughout the year and tickets make for thoughtful gifts too.

Buying and giving local will make you feel fantastic, and you can be assured that your gifts will be some of the coolest under the tree. While you are out shopping for friends and loved ones, don’t forget to treat yourselves. Pick up some new music and art, get dinner or see a show when you are grabbing those gift certificates.

Sign your kids or yourselves up for some music lessons at one of the great local Music Schools, might we suggest VMI or GK Music?

Check out all the great local artists, crafters and vendors at ModShop in Downtown Modesto on October 26th.

If we all spend even a portion of our holiday gift budget with local creators, we collectively will become the largest endow ment for the arts.

Community Tree Opens November 25th

Beginning November 25th, the Community Christmas Tree celebrates 38 years of mak ing a magical Christmas morning, no mat ter the circumstances, and gives children the “gift of hope” each year! On the tree, there are cards representing approximately 2,500 children that need some sparkle in their lives. The Tree is sponsored by Soroptimist International of Modesto and Modesto Sunrise Rotary, partnering with KHOP Radio and Vintage Faire Mall.

You can help make these holidays a happy time for a child that may not otherwise receive a gift during the season. Names of the children are submitted by local schools and social service agencies and repre sent some of the neediest children in the Modesto area. Most of the children ask for necessities like coats, shoes, socks, pants, and blankets.

Here is how you can GET INVOLVED: Visit kiosk on the second level of Santa’s Village at Vintage Faire Mall, check out a tag, shop for that child and return your tag with the gifts “unwrapped” to our Kiosk.

The gift is then wrapped and delivered to that child in time for Christmas.

To ensure that all children receive a gift, we encour age monetary donations as well! You can easily donate if you are interested in providing financial sup port for the Community Christmas Tree! These donations go towards ad ditional gifts for children’s cards not picked from the tree, gift wrapping, and other special treats that help to make the season shine.(See details on dona tions below).

The tree booth will open at Vintage Faire Mall on Black Friday - November 25th and run through December 18th. Hours are 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM daily.  Businesses and organizations can also share in the spirit of giving by supporting 10 or more children! Contact Pam Shelton-Allen at 551-0221 for further information.  Facebook at “Community Christmas Tree” for more information and to follow the journey this year!

As the holidays approach, and I appreci ate the autumn colors, I’m reminded of a mildly amusing thing that happened on a brisk November afternoon five years ago. We were setting up for a concert at my former listening-room space, Moon & Sixpence when a wild turkey appeared out of nowhere and began wandering around the courtyard outside the venue. This was a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving. I hope that the bird was able to enjoy some of the music before it got slow-roasted. I miss Moon & Sixpence. I miss many of the listening-room venues I’ve hosted with over the years, many of which are now lost to us. This sad shortage was even reflected in this year’s MAMA Awards, where the ‘Best Venue’ category was absent, leaving only the Bar/Cafe/Restaurant categorywhich more often than not means cover bands and/or background music. Modesto is currently without an independent venue dedicated to live music. Until somebody comes along and establishes a Freight & Salvage-type venue (and hires me as talent booker, naturally) I’ll be here doing what I can to help stave off cochlear winter by hosting intimate concerts with eclectic tal

ent worthy of such a venue.....and hosting them in whatever out-of-the-way spaces will have me. Quality original songwriting and unique sounds are the goals. If such things are your jam, Modesto Unplugged is the series for you.

In addition to my frequent songwriter nights at the Dragonfly art gallery, I’ve be gun a bimonthly series at the 25-seat ‘Jewel side room at the State Theatre. It turns out to be a pretty decent space for the sort of listening experience I like to curate. Con cert #2 taking place this month will take on a very unique flavor. It’s a Steampunk Cello Cabaret experience featuring UNWOMAN, who’s been high on my list to feature for some time. Unwoman (Erica Mulkey) is a cellist & songwriter from San Francisco, whose music is a darkly futuristic homage to her classical training. It’s an atmospheric sound layered with skilful cello, rich vocals and beats. Have a listen to some of her YouTube clips: there are music videos of original songs, and more offbeat offerings, such as the one where she plays cello while a pop singer covers Pat Benatar’s ‘Love Is A Battlefield.....in Klingon. Damn, man, my concert series is plenty eclectic but that particular collaboration kind of puts me to shame.

Unwoman will appear at the Jewel on Wednesday, November 9. Doors open at 7 pm and music begins at 7:30. General admission is $25 cash only at the door, and about half the seats are open as of now. RSVP for this cool cello cabaret at modestounplugged@yahoo.com or 209543-5306. Intimate performances. Infinite playlist. MODESTO UNPLUGGED. www. modestounplugged.com.

New Excitement in Riverbank

Downtown Riverbank is getting ready to shine.   For the last few years, the rede signed downtown area along Santa Fe Avenue has been working hard to get the buzz going again with a redesigned Wine and Cheese Festival and other investments. Places like Toasted have lit a spark and now it appears that there is going to be a steady stream of excitement.

Randy Rocha has been a friend for a long time.  His Tap Room in Modesto and the Twisted Pig became solid staples of north-east Modesto.  A few years ago, at a fortuitous meeting over cocktails, Randy met Janet Smallen who works for the City of Riverbank and they began to plan a new restaurant called the Daily Dose featuring lighter foods, delicious sandwiches and craft cocktails designed around Sake and other lower alcohol offerings.  When Randy sold the Twisted Pig, these plans became a reality and you can visit Daily Dose now with Olivia Castagnetto at the helm. Jessica Mendez behind the bar makes beautiful drinks.  For the mornings, they have Kombucha, breakfast shots, Nitro coffee on tap and even a spiked coffee with cinnamon.   For lunches and dinner, they have margaritas, and local beers on tap.  Daily Dose is specializing in lower alcohol beverages using Sake based spirits, blending with Tequila, Rum, Vodka and Gin.  These are used like normal mixers and Jessica even made me a Mai Tai.  For happy hours, you can even get a Sake Bomb or craft Vodka Sake with Basil and other custom blends.  If you are camping out for an afternoon, this is a great way to go.

The food word of the day is Empanadas.  Breakfast, lunch and dinner empanadas.  These are really delicious.  The breakfast is bacon, egg, cheese and potatoes and the Beef and Cilantro and the Chicken Buffalos are so tasty for the afternoons.  Chef Dee Orio really blends great flavors and she make sure her slow roasted prime rib is

perfect every time, loaded on a fresh focac cia with extra dipping sauce. You have to try anything they do with their caramelized onions, like the Cali Club.  You can also find some amazing meats with hard and Genoa salamis, mortadella, and a variety of specialty cheeses.  These can be found on their charcuterie boards and the Italian sandwiches.

There is a good variety of high-top seating options, great seats at the bar, and a cool conversation area up front and a sidewalk patio.  There is a lot of easy parking and downtown Riverbank is easy to navigate.

Randy and Janet really want to help develop downtown and get people to spend more time in this part of town.

It doesn’t stop here. Randy was attracted to the former Red Carpet Bar location across the street from the Dose and is building a new larger sized eatery called The Black Sheep that will be up and running by

December 1 with a large outside patio. Well it doesn’t stop there either as Randy will be opening a former service station and garage on Highway 108 that will become the Pump House that should open in early January.  These are a lot of changes coming really soon for Riverbank.   “I really want to do something in the downtown area that is all walking distance”, said Randy. His experi

ence with the other two restaurants made planning these new places pretty straight forward, adding nice patios, expanding into adjacent buildings and creating transforma tion.

Janet has been a Riverbank resident for 18 years, and downtown is where she works and wanted to make a difference with the Daily Dose and since they are so excited about there they are making these invest ments, good things should happen with more hours and entertainment options coming soon

Harvest Flavors

There are amazing flavors all over our area. Just because Halloween is over doesn’t mean that pumpkins are all done for the season.  We haven’t even hit full speed yet with pumpkin pie, butter nut squash treats, fall nuts and fruit, persimmons and apples that find their way into everything from lattes, pies, cookies and bread. Places you need to visit regularly are Rodin Famers Market at 10th & J, the Rodin Fruit Stand at Claribel and Oakdale and Modesto Certified Farmer’s

Market. Our friends at Stewart and Jasper have flavored nuts, fruits and more with a great wine tasting.  Load up on fall fruit and vegetables and make your home menu exciting and tasty this season.  Rodin and Stewart & Jasper make great gift baskets to take to Thanksgiving dinner.

November is home to one of my favorite foods ever, butternut squash raviolis and soup.   Galletto and Concetta make amaz ing raviolis and you can get the soup at Burley’s.   Verona in McHenry Village has raviolis during this time as well.  Concetta only makes a few daily as they are big, hand made, sautéed in brown butter and deli cious.  Trust me, you will be sad if you don’t

who have an opportunity to practice and perform gain self-confidence and discipline that transfers to other domains in their life. Finding passion through music, dance, art, and other VAPA disciplines provides students confidence and a path to a pos sible life-long talent. Our vision at MCS is to greatly expand VAPA opportunities for students.  Currently we are in the beginning stages of offering Folklorico and Mariachi at a few school sites.   We are very fortunate to have amazing community partner ships with The Gallo Center, Modesto Junior College, CSU Stanislaus, and other community-based organizations. We are excited to be a supporter of the future Modesto Children’s Museum, currently under construction.

I think we are at a point in time where edu cation has never been more important.  The ability to understand, analyze and navigate in our community and in the world is be coming more difficult all of the time.  Prob lem solving and teamwork is a learned skill and knowing how to work together is a big part of the educational process.    My mom was a teacher here in Modesto and as a kid growing up, most everything we would do was some sort of educational experi ence. With our own girls, the experience of school, the ability to learn at many different paces and to find your way in around the world, comes from education. It is an amazing thing to have school systems that meet the wide range of needs of our diverse students.  On a cultural note, for the people of Modesto really love MoBand concerts in the park, we need to be thankful we still have music in our schools as that is where the MoBand performers got their skills.  So you see, it all goes back to a solid education.       To take on this daunting challenge, the person at the top needs to set the tone.   Modesto City Schools is led by Dr. Sara No guchi.  She is a northern California native and developed her education background in the greater Sacramento area starting as a math teacher.  She has been dedicated to education justice and equal opportunities at all levels, creating an Equity and Racial Jus tice Task Force and is very optimistic about the possibilities for all students and recently worked out a direct admission program to UC Merced. She has her Doctorate from University of the Pacific, her Masters from CSU Sacramento and a Bachelors from San Diego State University. She has three children and two grandchildren.  Let’s learn more about Dr. Noguchi.

ModestoView:  Modesto City Schools serve a wide range of student diversity and needs, what do you think the biggest challenge is today?

Dr. Sara Noguchi: Our greatest challenge is meeting the mental health needs of our students, staff, and parents.  Since the pandemic began, Modesto City Schools has increased our social emotional and mental health support by approximately 3.5 million dollars.  Additionally, we have increased our school counselors and behavioral support available at our school sites.  Our challenge is staffing a number of hard to fill positions.  Stanislaus County struggles to find qualified mental health providers, more specifically mental health clinicians.  Ensuring our students and families have access to any needed mental health support is both a challenge and a priority for our school district.

MV: COVID really made it hard on edu cation and teachers, what is something good that came out of the pandemic plans and what are the big challenges get ting up to speed again?

DSN: While the pandemic was difficult for everyone, our district has greatly benefitted from some of the changes that have resulted from having 100% of our students learning remotely. Currently, all of our students have a personal computer and internet service.  This is important because it leveled the playing field for all of our students and their families. Having a personal computer in every household, not only allows for all students to access learning outside of the school day, but it provides parents with a tool to access Parent Workshops which has significantly increased over the past three years.

MV: Modesto is fortunate that MCS leadership has kept music in the schools as a priority, I believe, and I think data backs this up. Having music and the arts in school helps the thinking process and actually helps in test scores.  Do you find this to be the case?

DSN: Offering students of all grade levels an opportunity to participate in the Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) is an essential piece of a well-rounded education. Students

MV: With unemployment being so low, do you view the role of education even more valuable to develop a ready work force?

DSN: Central to any community is the public school system.  Every community needs their youth to be educated both with skills to support college-going aspirations and today’s workforce.  I believe that stu dents need both sets of skills to be college and career ready.  The majority of college students need to work, so by supporting them in learning a workforce skill, they are better able to support themselves as they go through college.  For those students who choose not to pursue college, the learned skills and certifications gained through our Career Technical Education pathways will support them as they go into work-based learning, job shadowing, and internships. All components of our programs provide students with exposure to local opportuni ties and the skills needed to be prepared for college or career. Our teachers look to our local businesses for their input on what soft skills and technical skills are needed to best prepare our students for the work force.  Our goal is to ensure we provide a comprehensive education that will provide a pathway to our student’s future success, whether it be by way of post-secondary education or immediately upon graduation.

MV: What are the plans to strengthen the International Baccalaureate program at Modesto High?

DSN: The International Baccalaureate pro gram is an excellent program for students who are looking for a rigorous course of study that will prepare them for the best educational options post-secondary educa tion.  We are pleased that our IB program represents district demographics and all student groups are represented in the pro

gram. Additionally, students demonstrate success year after year through their mas tery of content demonstrated on IB exams, but also through their acceptance rate into four-year colleges following completion of twelfth grade.

MV: If you had unlimited budget and personnel, what would you do to change the school district for the better?

DSN: Wow- what an awesome question! I am deeply committed to building struc tures and systems that ensure ALL students have equitable access to education and opportunities. I would work hand-in-hand with our labor partners, and community partners to create the right conditions for all students to succeed. Together we can build a district where every student thrivesregardless of the neighborhood he/she lives in.  A district, where every student soars to their highest levels of success.   We want our average students to stretch and achieve exceptional levels. We want our struggling students to catch up to their peers, so they too can achieve amazing things. We want our high performing students to learn the skills needed to compete in any 4-year college of their choice.  How do we create this? We ensure that all students have the academic, social-emotional, and mental health supports they need to thrive. This takes a talented and dedicated workforce all working together in service of our students, and their families.

MV: What is the best way local businesses or individual people can lend a hand and get involved?

DSN: We absolutely need local businesses to support our Career Technical Education (CTE) programming through mentorships and internships.  We also need to hear from them, regarding their needs. Modesto City Schools is a family, and many individual community members are connected to someone who works in the school dis trict.  I would ask individuals to support the school workforce, as each and every day, they work their hearts out and it truly is a hard job.  Empathy and understanding can go a long way.

MV: Describe your normal day as the Superintendent?

DSN: I have never had two of the same days. There are no “normal days” for a Superintendent.

MV: Finally, the most important ques tion, Beatles or Stones?

DSN: Beatles.

This is the most refreshing and invigorating season of the year.   The days and evenings get cooler, the leaves are beautiful for walks in the park and November seems to be where we change gears.  Just so we all are clear, and despite what you see in the stores, November is for fall harvest and Thanksgiving.   The Christmas holiday season doesn’t start until AFTER Thanksgiving, so let’s not rush ourselves and savor this month of fall tastes, smells and crafty experiences. Thanksgiving day is for family and friends and everyone needs a day off.

MOD SHOP IS BACK!

Mod Shop will be hosted on November 26, 2022, in downtown Modesto.

This year at Mod Shop we are taking it back to our original platform of highlighting the uber-talented folks in our com munity, on a more scaled-down platform. This allows our vendors to have more booth space and gives our shoppers more space to walk comfortably and safely. In addition to supporting our handmade artisans, we want to give down town businesses a day to shine on Small Business Saturday. We have extended our hours from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm, which gives families lots of time to enjoy the afternoon on into the evening, with time for enough downtown Modesto nightlife. We will have busking musicians performing, and a drum circle.

This year ModShop will host around 75 vendors in 6 loca tions. VMI School of Rock, Dragonfly Art for Life, City Center Courtyard (located next to the Modesto Chamber Office), Tresseti’s Wine Room, Mistlin Gallery & Greens on Tenth. In addition to our Makers, we will host MoSt Poetry Center’s lovely poetry-on-the-spot booth with all proceeds benefiting their non-profit.

We are also excited to invite former MJC photography and ESL student Thelma Salivar to showcase her photography exhibit. “Titled, Letters Home Photography Project.” This exhibit tells the story of immigrant families and how they are documenting their life now to share with their families back home. Thelma would like to help fellow immigrant families and students share their stories as well, and will be assisting with taking photos to send back home.

Mod Shop is thrilled to partner with Modesto Subaru, a business that truly believes in sup porting the arts in our community.

WonkyFeltFun

Modesto has its’ own little group of characters.  No, they are not from a sports team, nor from a TV show or movie, but these various crea tures have been spotted in and around 10th St Place and now have quite a following.

What started as way to cover a patch of damaged carpet on the 3rd floor of the City / County building, these little critters began to magically appear, first as a safety notice for a missing carpet tile, a little piece of lawn getting mowed by little hot dogs and little felt safety cones issuing a warning, to a cast of others that began to inhabit this space.   Who was doing these little mini art expos?

Turned out that one of the building employees, Sara Lytle-Pinhey, Executive Officer for LAFCO, the land agency forming commission, was the mischievous creator of these crit ters and miniatures. “I saw that a piece of carpet was missing for a while, so tried to find a fun way to call attention to it”.  Sara is known as one of the creative fun people with a lot of good ideas. Her Halloween costumes are amazing and the cast of characters that found stardom on the 3rd floor carpet space have become the stories of legends.

Over the next few years, these little daily curiosities got their own Instagram page and fans from all over started cheering these little inhabitants on.  These weren’t just Kozy cones, but friendly hot dogs and even musical stars. The Beatles were celebrated with a recreation of Sgt Pepper,  Sgt. Felty, small felt guitars, and even uniforms for little hot dog Beatles.  As a Star Wars fan, Jabba the Hut (with Pizza) Millminem Falcons and land speeders have made and appearance and a tribute to the band Garbage, also one of my faves.  Even the ‘32 Deuce Coupe from American Graffiti made an appearance, complete with THX 138 license plate.  It is a big world and there are felt mini Matterhorns, Golden Gate Bridges, Disney castles, chocolate factories, robots, condiments, and so much more.  In a nod to the classics, Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks was recreated in 3D.  So let’s get one thing straight, this is so much more than crafty, it is art, display and per formance art and really provokes thought as art should.  It will be interesting to see where Sara takes this in the future and how elaborate they will become, but with all she has done so far, you know it will be fun.  One thing is true, it is great to have government officials with a creative sense of humor and crafty skills.  There are so many creative people in our community and we love to celebrate those the make things that make us smile and want to be part of our social fabric. From the Modesto Area musicians to the artists at the Mistlin Gallery and the crafty vendors at ModShop, there is really no reason worry about your holiday gift giving this year where you can eat, drink,

shop local and make people smile, and make yourself feel good.       See more and follow Wonkyfelt @wonkyfelt and enjoy the fun.

Lowrider Culture Takes Center Stage at Graffiti USAFall

On the heels of Hispanic heritage month, and as the Modesto Crusier’s Council works towards recognition for their community and cultural pastime, (gatherings that commingle their love for classic cars and a celebration of family and support for the community.)

Till Andrade’s 1956 Chevy Wagon Lowrider “Rosemary” is now on display at Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum. It was unveiled at the Modesto Cruiser’s Coun cil Crush Cancer Cruise meet-up at the Museum on October 21st. “Rosemary”, a 1956 Chevy Wagon celebrates family, history, and Chicano culture. The car’s res toration has been a family affair in memory of Andrade’s beloved mother-in-law, Rosemary.  Over a 7-year period, Andrade’s family has added a new radiator, fan, alternator, air shocks, tires, horns, and a vibrant paint job to their classic Chevy wagon.

Lowriding goes back to the early days of cruising when Hispanic GIs returned home with money in their pockets from their time in the service. Like many Americans, they spent some of that money on buying a car. There was a  surplus of Chevys to be bought at a reasonable price and they became the preferred car for lowriders. Many using the mechanical skills they acquired in the military would fix up and modify the cars, oftentimes putting weights in the trunk to lower the cars. Whereas the Hot Rods were made to be hot and fast, the lowriders were built to go low and slow.

Going back to the early seventies, low-rider clubs have made the community the key element to who they are and what they do. Yes, they talk about and work on cars just like any other car club but the social aspect is a much larger component. On any given weekend you will find members of the 20-plus local lowrider clubs out raising money for charity, funeral or medical expenses and not just for those in their immediate group. Lowriders encompass the largest population of up-andcoming classic car enthusiasts.

Even though we have been in the thrust of Fall, we are just getting a taste of the brisk new temperatures. It is going to take a bit to get use to the evenings arriving sooner.

The sharp scent of chimney smoke and the smell of fallen leaves mixed with the wet earth (when it finally rains), will be a nice experience.

I appreciate all of it. This is the beginning of the end. The year is coming to a close.

The Modesto Certified Farmers Market Thursdays come to completion for the season.

There are six dates of live music at the mar ket this month.

11/3 Bill Marion

11/5 Patty Castillo Davis & Rick Fletcher

11/10 Ross Redding

11/12 Chaz & Jess

11/17 Jamie Byous

11/19 Big Earl Matthews

It has been a better year than the one before.  We were moved.

We either opened the door and stepped through it with less terror or we remained terror stricken, stayed inside and locked the door.

Either way we made a move.

I went through right on through that door. I personally made strides in my career and now serve as the Director of Advocacy for the Central California 2S/LGBTQIA+ Col laborative and Resource Center.

Arts and Humanity

I have my boots on the ground, walking the walk.

I get to live in the best of two worlds- Stewardship and Music.

We incorporate live music every chance we get in our events to cul tivate culture in this community.

Come visit me at 1202 H Street, look for the big rainbow flag. I’d love to give you a tour.

The MAMA Awards became a proving ground of just how vital women remain. The live performances held great representation with chick centric material.

The Lady Bosses behind PorchFest brought home the steel once again.

The Best Comedian prize went to Molly Magee.

MAMA is a lady after all.

Susan Powers and Rebecca Harrington dominated the third weekend of October by bringing information and celebration dur ing the same weekend by turning Modesto pink and Mexican.

The Gallo Center for the Arts’ Brown Bag Series of live concerts on the lawn did a wonderful job of equity in hiring local female talent.

The best days are yet to come for women.

I will end with saying that I am grateful.

I am grateful for my family.

I am grateful for my friends, my band mates and everyone I’ve had the pleasure to col laborate with musically.

I am grateful for my job and the family we have created at work.

I am grateful to the readers for all of the support.

I am grateful to be allowed to be a Creative and Caretaker of the arts.

Please send your December event informa tion to pcdenterprises@yahoo.com to be included in the next issue by November 18.

Veterans Day is November 11th

We remember and recognize those that have served and still serve today.  We can’t forget the sacrifices that the few make for so many.   It is important to remember as we face a more complicated world and we only go into battle only when necessary that there are so many ready to serve and all of their lives are valuable.  Their stories are important to learn and their experienc es can teach you a lot.   So let’s make sure that we are flying our flags on November 11.  Originally known as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of hostilities at the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, it was renamed Veterans Day in 1954

Here are some of the events that will mark Veterans Day: 9:00  am - The Veterans Day Parade begins at 10th and O, and proceeds down Need ham to Graceada Park.  There will be a pro gram at Graceada Park in Mancini Bowl at 10:30 AM.  The parade and program in the park are organized by local veterans honoring and remembering veterans, ac tive duty military and celebrating Women Veterans.  The parade will include military vehicles, marching bands, classic cars and Grand Marshals.  The family friendly pro gram at Graceada Park will include tunes

MODESTO’S FIRST LANDMARK!

While Modesto has historical and architec tural landmarks throughout the City, there is only one that has the special distinction of being Modesto’s first landmark. Formally recognized by City Council in 1989 just one year after the Landmark Preservation Commission was established, the McHenry Mansion located downtown at the corner of 15th and I Streets became the City’s first designated landmark, and it continues to be one of Modesto’s most recognizable remnants of the Victorian era.

Built for Robert (Brewster) McHenry and his family, the Italianate mansion served as the in-town residence for the McHenrys aside from a home located out on their expansive Bald Eagle Ranch north of town. Completed in 1883, the mansion became the McHenry’s primary residence. Beyond early agricultural successes in the Modesto area, Robert McHenry became a prominent financial leader in Modesto through his time working at the Modesto Bank before then being named President of the First Na tional Bank of Modesto in 1884. The ornate décor and impressive style of the mansion was a status symbol fit for the McHenry’s reputation and unique amid other struc tures in the budding valley town.

Upon the death of Robert McHenry in 1890 and Mathilda McHenry in 1896, their son

Oramil McHenry inherited the mansion and moved his family there making it the second generation’s home. After the passing of Oramil McHenry in 1906, the house was used on and off by his second wife Myrtie Langdon before it was turned into a sanitarium from 1919-1923, after which the home was divided into several apartments and remained so until 1976. The mansion was purchased by Julio and Aileen Gallo for the expressed purpose of facilitating its restoration to save a piece of Modesto’s early history. The Julio R. Gallo Founda tion donated the Mansion to the City of Modesto for public enjoyment, which began in 1983 following the full restoration. The grand home has served as a point of civic and historical pride since.

With much of Modesto’s early buildings and homes having been lost throughout the 1950’s-1980’s, it is understandable why the McHenry Mansion was selected to be city’s first landmark. While the McHenry Mansion is not the only Victorian home remaining in Modesto, its downtown loca tion and prominent community support helped to see it preserved for generations to come. So as we get ready for the holiday season, make sure to plan a festive tour of the mansion and stop by their revamped Christmas Fair!

Life happens as well as injuries like it or not, either by an accident or in fitness. When injuries do happen it’s best to prepare your mental state for the challenges that may lie ahead. For many athletes, injuries are part of the game. Honestly, most of us don’t deal with them too well. As athletes, we are happy and proud to share our fitness abili ties and talents at any given moment. When injured the struggles are not only dealing with the pain but the reality of not being able to perform as easily as before. For runners, it can be very detrimental to our mental health. Many runners are addicted to those endorphins that come on strong when running. Not being able to reach that continuous 6-minute mile to activate those endorphins is like a fish desperate to breathe out of water. Although we may still be able to jog or walk it’s not the same. We just can’t achieve that runner’s high jogging. This is not just about runners. Injuries affect all athletes in all sports such as football, tennis, baseball, basketball and so on.  The mental part of your injury

can really come on strong. Along with the physical injury a person is also dealing with being deprived of what brings an athlete happiness. Fitness!

This is very real friends. Depression among athletes is quite common. If you suffer from an injury either from fitness or another accident it may be best to get help through a therapist or an injured athlete’s support group. They will help you deal with accept ing your new fitness abilities while you are on the road to recovery. On that note, it’s very important that you don’t stop working out. Even though your abilities may be lim ited, depending on your injury, you must work around those issues. Think of other muscle groups. If you can’t run, walk. If you can’t walk, swim. If you can’t body build, stretch. In other words don’t focus on what you can’t do, instead focus on what you can do in fitness. Some kind of fitness is always better than no kind of fitness. Remember the body is a very complex and amazing machine. All injuries take time to heal. Just follow your doctor’s orders along with some physical therapy.

Never stop reaching out to be the best and healthiest you can be at any age.

Thanksgiving Assistance

November marks the start of gratitude season. We are reminded more frequently to find gratitude for all the people, places and things in our lives, especially those we take for granted because we don’t see them often. Sometimes forgetting to drop by your favorite coffee shop, means you may never get a second chance again. Saying goodbye to Deva Café this week reminds Ms. M that it is important to enjoy the small things including shopping local especially this time of year. Since it’s the time of year to be giving and saving money, here are some ways to budget in both the fun and remain practical with your finances.  Music makes the world go around and local favorite’s Off The Air returns with new concert series with featured upcom ing shows at Greens on Tenth and venues in the downtown area of Modesto The all-ages show on November 4th welcomes Salacious Wizard Cult, Daze Baby and So Much Light. We’re Open!

There are many ways to help those that need it the most during the holidays. This is truly a day to be thankful for what we have and to make sure those that are in need get some assistance.  There are many ways to help and we look for those that direct most all fund directly to their pro grams. We like the Salvation Army because over 85% of all funds received go directly to those in need and all are served without discrimination and you can be assured that your dollars actually go to food and shelter. You can also help support Salvation Army in other ways.  You can be a bell ringer for Salvation Army by calling 209-522-3209.   You can do this as an individual, a family, or with a group.  You can also give personal items that are needed in the shelters. Donations can be taken to 320 9th St or 625 I St.  Items needed are: toiletries, bedding, towels, underwear & socks.

Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot

This is without a doubt the best compliment to Thanksgiving Day. Before your meal, how good would it be to get dressed up, take the family and get in a 5K run or walk? Trust me, that extra helping of mashed potatoes will taste that much better after you start the day at the MJC Turkey Trot at Legion Park. This is a family friendly 3.1 mile course on a paved path with some grass and dirt. The 1/2 mile kids run will be on grass, 1/4 mile out and 1/4 mile back. There is also a Gobbler Walk, an event for just walkers on the same 5k course. Strollers/dogs are welcomed. Lots of parking, easy run and a lot of fun. Check in begins at 7:30 am and races start 8:45 for the kids and 1Ž2 and 9:30 for the 5K. Overall male and female finishers will receive a medal. T-shirts will be provided and will be guaranteed to the first 1200 entrants. Please no strollers, headphones, or dogs in the 5K run. We will see you there. November 24.

I have noticed that people are so overwhelmed and busy that they don’t find time to return

calls anymore. We are rushing through our day. Some of us want to get things taken care of quickly so that

can be done with whatever it is, but of course as soon as we think we are done, whoops there’s the next piece of work!  I find It takes a conscious effort to break out of this trap, to take time out and smell the roses. But the reward is guaranteed. I can tell because it makes me be in a good mood,

Maybe I do some exercise, go take a nap, re lax.. play with children or pets, call a friend, go for a walk, ride a bicycle, play an instru ment, bake some cookies, paint or dance to my favorite music. I may do something out of the ordinary, like seeing a show, listening to someone’s poetry or go out for a nice meal. One can just decide to be grateful to be alive and enjoy the company of family and friends. Watch a beautiful sunset or sunrise!  Pray and meditate. This is your chance to use your voice. It is a precious right and please be part of the process. The worst thing for democracy is voter apathy and the future of our democracy is seriously at risk with people actually questioning the process of the peaceful transition of power and rejection of authoritarian ism that began with George Washington. Seriously. You need to know how the issues affect you, know the facts, vote on the propositions, vote for your elected officials at the local level. Every vote counts, right down to who is going to be in charge of our local com munity school districts and vot ers office. ModestoView does not take political sides, but we are strongly recommend a YES vote on Measure H to invest in Modesto and L for school upgrades. Information and knowledge are keys to success and a well informed popula tion is the key to democracy. So don’t take a pass on this election.

Use your voice and VOTE.
