The leaved are fallin’, the air is chillin’ and
the turkey is cookin’ and we are getting ready for the fall transformation. Family and friend traditions are so important. Especially now in our family as we have a new grandchild and another on the way. These are treasured moments. I am so excited for Modesto on Ice, the Turkey Trot, the first viewing Christmas Vacation, and the opening weekend of Rockin’ Holiday. The excitement is building. Something is in the air here in Modesto. Besides the annual fall flavors, traditions and the fresh crisp breezes that roll in, there is some thing magic starting to happen. There are more families and kids in downtown, empty storefronts are featuring new restaurants and corners are lighting up with neon. The sound of live music is in the air once again and there seems to be a new freshness. Is that we are wishing for a new era in Modesto, is it really happening? Thanks all who voted and supported the MAMA Awards! Over 6,000 people voted this year and our local music scene shined brightly. It is one of Modesto’s true special resources and a secret sauce and the MAMAs turn the corner into fall and shine a light on what is special. We have an opportunity to make sure that we are all

going in the right direction. The business community has stepped up and people are investing. The non-profits are stepping in to make sure that those in need are getting the assistance they need. We need to make sure that our government is moving in the right direction too. The City of Modesto just received a grant for downtown beautification. Let’s make sure we are creating well-lit and safe places. It takes groups working together to make it happen. Let’s make sure that our leaders know what we want and expect. We have a community where we can all speak up and engage, so let’s all be a part of the solution. We need to make sure that the government resources are supporting safe places for the homeless and transient so that we can have a safe business and visitor experience. It all starts with why? People will team up if they know why. My grandson always asks “Why?” “Just because” doesn’t work. He wants to know how, when and why, and I need to explain it. Why we need a Children’s or a Graffiti Museum and what are the results, why we need safe places for camping, why we need well-lit streets and why each one of us benefits when we all succeed. When we support Haven, Salvation Army, Community Christmas Tree, or the Modesto Gospel Mission, the priorities will be quite obvious and they know we want solutions. This is the season to show our gratitude and thankfulness for what we have and how we can share. It’s a pretty simple concept.
I am thankful for all that have given of themselves, to make our community better, invest in where we live and step up to create magic places bring more people along. That’s why ModestoView is here to help learn about who and what is making a difference and celebrating our local businesses and non-profits. We can do this and I am grateful for everyone who reads and supports ModestoView and acts local. We have some great contributors that make a difference. Let’s make the end of 2023 the best we can and we have to start now to finish strong. Let’s make it happen. If you have great ideas on how we can do this, please let me know and let’s be a strong voice. With gratitude and thanksgiving, Chris Murphy, Founder and Publisher, ModestoView. chrism@modestoview.com
On the Cover
One of the great Thanksgiving traditions is the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. Another tradition is football and our November cover combines these 2 traditions recreating the iconic Peanut moment that will never change as Charlie Brown once again gets suckered by Lucy. Thanks to the Nelson kids, Cash and Ava who helped us recreate this hilarious moment. Ava looks so innocent, as she waits for Cash to take a run at the never to be kicked football. Apologies to Schultz and thanks to Mike and Shelly Nelson for the great kids!

November is the month of fallen leaves, remembrance, Shop Local Saturday, Black Friday, Thanksgiving, and the start of holiday shopping. A good time to hit the local galleries and art venues, including the new scenes by DoMo Walls downtown. Emily Ding created the sunflowers you now see at full height at 1012 11th Street. Ricky Watts and Fly Lord created the fanciful mural on the alley walls of the Children’s Museum, and Fasm and Chiwi the foodthemed mural behind Food Fix Butcher and Baker. A new Mural Alley is born. Seed 2 Cup: Serving
By Christopher Up All Things Brewed & Brandilyn Mitchell
There’s a new cafe in Oakdale, Seed2Cup, owned by Alan Allen and Lisa May. With a very “coffee-forward” line-up mixed with their passion for coffee education, they will have you trying concoctions you might not try from any other shop. They don’t saturate their beverages with sugary flavors hiding the taste of roasted beans beyond recognition. Their flavors are curated fresh in store from as local of ingredients as they can find. They often use produce from Sons Farm Fresh (Oakdale) and Vanderhelm (Modesto) when they create new flavors. And before you think, “Isn’t BrewView about alcohol? Why is this article about coffee?” This article is about BOTH because Seed2Cup serves brews from espresso machines, kettles, stills and fermenting tanks. They recently collaborated with Dying Breed Brewing on their Coconut Hoarder Porter which was DEEE-licious! So stay tuned for more options like that in the future as there will be plenty.
8
You will be able to order delicious waffles, paninis, salads, scones, or muffins alongside espresso martinis, mimosas, and Irish Coffees. Or have a pint of beer or a glass of wine! It doesn’t matter what your favorite libation is, they’ll have it for you or can suggest something equally yummy for you. As for their coffee though, you need to try something with their special Bourbon Coffee base. It can be served hot or iced and is rested in bourbon barrels for a delicious, complex taste. It’s got a hint of smokey deliciousness that you won’t find drinking a coffee with a simple syrup added in. You can mix it with complimentary flavors like pecan or pumpkin to create a unique-toyou beverage. While most coffee shops and breweries offer kids things like root beer, chocolate milk, and/or decaf frappuccinos, this place knocks those selections right outta the park by also offering tasty seasonal lemonades freshly squeezed and pureed in store daily.

Both Lisa and Alan are locals–Lisa has been in Oakdale since kindergarten while Alan has lived everywhere in the valley, he settled in Oakdale 4 years ago. Alan was previously in construction, and Lisa was a hairdresser, just 2 doors down from the cafe. Alan designed and built all the counter space and the fireplace in the cafe. Giving me the grand tour, I was happy to see a fireplace in the shop. He fondly recounted how he fell in love with Lisa sitting in front of the fireplace at the Fruit Yard, “We held hands and jumped in with both feet! I had to have a fireplace here.” I wonder how many couples will get to experience that at the fireplace at Seed2Cup? Alan has ADD, which is where his passion for coffee comes from. A science teacher he had in high school left an impression on him by being the first teacher to let him be himself in the classroom. If he needed
to get up and take a walk he could-click his pen, no problem-jiggle his leg, can do! Fidgeting was allowed. This teacher also let him drink coffee-which helped him focus more than anything else did. “It gave me a certain control meds didn’t,” he said. That became a lifelong admiration of caffeine and now a full time career. Lisa’s passion is baking, and she can do it all! From fluffy muffins with blueberries and drizzled icing to crispy chicken-filled paninis to warm gooey waffles with all the toppings.” They make the perfect team, and even if you don’t fall in love with another human during your visit here, you will def fall in love with their drinks and treats. Grand opening will be this month and the drink specials will be out of this world. Follow them on facebook for the hours and specials! We hope to see you there. Sip on, friends.

I want to say what a great night at The State Theatre of Modesto for the Modesto Area Music Awards. The point is and I believe always has been to elevate the entire entertainment scene in the 209 not just those MAMAnated. It is a celebration bringing together differing musical genres, venues, bars, cafes, breweries, promoters, comedians and this year drag queens and kings. A celebration of everyone who puts an effort into making things brighter and better through the arts. If you were not nominated or if you didn’t win it does not detract from the work you are putting in, it takes a village and rising tides and all that. I want to give a huge shout-out to every person who supports live entertainment and goes out to see musicians perform live, shows up to comedy shows, or drag shows, or buys a piece of art from a local artist, your support is what keeps everything moving forward, you all deserve a MAMA. Thanks to Chris Murphy and Chris Ricci for creating and keeping this event going for the last 24 years, to Justin Brown for running the PowerPoint and adding some visual magic to the MAMAs, to Jill and Ryan Irons(congratulations on your dashboard mama) for running sound and stage managing, to the staff at the State for always being so great, to Shawn Posey and Joanne Farish for working the Check-In Desk, to Nick and Johnny and the whole Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group crew for helping with set up and breakdown, to Michael J Mangano, Bill Harris(congratulations on your dashboard mama), Kevin Phal, Orlando Jose(congratulations on your dashboard mama), Elliot Gage, and the State Theatre Film School and everyone else who took pictures and video of the event, to all the performers and presenters, as I said it takes a village to make these kinds of things happen.
Photo by William Harris Congratulations to all the winners Mapuana-Unplugged, Horizon PointPunk, Dying Breed Brewing-Restaurant/ Brewery, Last July-Youth, High St. Blues Band-Jazz/Blues, The Wet Banditdos-Latin, Tiffany Rose & the Outlaw Hearts(3X)Americana, Modesto Porchfest-Event, DJ Invisible(3X)-DJ, Spy vs. Spi-Alt/Indie, FunkHaus-Blue Collar, Real One-Hip Hop, Serena Gamboa(3X)-Comedy, Sasha Devaroe-Drag, Beheading of the QueenMetal, The State Theatre-Venue, and with the Lifetime Acheivement Award going to Darin Morris of VMI. There were some Hall-of-Fame performances from Bobby Black and the Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit, Mystic Moon, and of course, Darin Morris backed up by Vintage Youth. Performers make sure to stay on our radar but sending in your gigs to events@ modestoview.com and everyone else please keep supporting live local music and art, it is what makes Modesto and the surrounding area a great place to live.
Modesto’s population is approximately 216,810, making it the 19th largest city in California. So, what does that mean? It means that there is a significant number of people living in and around Modesto. Statistics show that approximately 68% of the money spent locally is reinvested in the community. This statistic is important to remember. Independent businesses contribute more than three times as much money per dollar of sales back into the community compared to chain competitors.
How can we grow our local economy? What I am suggesting is that if we all switch our spending, even just a little, it will have a huge impact. Even $5, which is the price of a cup of coffee at one of those corporate cafes, can make a difference. That small amount adds up significantly. We want to ensure that our favorite places remain in business for years to come. Whether it’s going out to eat, getting a haircut, or enjoying a spa day, many of us are looking forward to these activities. However, we must acknowledge that not everyone in Modesto can afford to spend even an extra $20. To simplify the calculation, let’s exclude
the very young, old, and unemployed individuals, which make up approximately 40% of Modesto’s population. Let’s round that number up to 50% for convenience. This means that 108,405 people are still in a position to contribute. If each of us spends an average of $20 on gift certificates or dining out at local cafes, restaurants, hair salons, spas, and other locally-owned businesses, We can accumulate $2,168,100 in just one month. Over the course of a year, this amounts to $26,017,200. This is a substantial sum of money that can greatly benefit our community, our friends, and our neighbors. Remember, I mentioned the statistic of 68%? The local businesses you support also contribute a significant portion of that back to your community through their patronage of your shops and restaurants, thereby providing employment opportunities for your friends and family. This results in an additional 1,474,308 each month being circulated within the local economy. This demonstrates the compounding effect of supporting local businesses. Perhaps you are considering buying gifts for the holidays instead? There are numerous talented artists, crafters, and artisans who would greatly appreciate your support, and you can find unique gifts for your loved ones from them. Gift certificates to venues that host live music and plays also make excellent presents. Also buying gifts or making a donation in someone’s name to local non-profits like the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum, McHenry Mansion, or Museum are great gift ideas and support our community. Shop local, shop small, and remember together we can make an incredible impact.

The Ill List-
Invitational Poetry Slam is back!
Sadly, the Modesto Bee has discontinued the Around the Region section. We always used that as a resource. I want you to know that we have an amazing event calendar. It is not littered with sales, real estate or other clutter, but is event and activity driven for arts, entertainment, and community support. It is FREE to get your event in the ModestoView.com calendar and what’s in the calendar, appears in the back pages of ModestoView each month. But, 24/7 you can see what’s happening here in the greater Modesto area so you don’t miss out. See you out and about! events@modestoview.com
The Ill List can vote now! For 18 years, the Ill List brings Modesto’s creatives
together. The Ninja Poet, Sam Pierstorff hosts this amazing night of verbal head to head combat, where the audience and judges score each of the competing poets. These are international stars of poetry and this is hall of fame night. ModestoView & Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group are proud to be the title sponsor again this year. We are super excited to see our annual “commercial” the Ill List presents at the show. This is one of the most fun nights in Modesto all year and it makes you think. The Ill List has just a few solo seats left, so don’t lose your tix and remember to thank all of the sponsors and have a great time. State Theatre December 9 7 pm

Who’s Got Modesto’s G.O.A.T.?
OLD GRANDDAD –
CITY TREE PATRIARCH
by Aaron Rowan
By Harrison Power
The 23rd Modesto Area Music Awards
Old Granddad
With the changes in temperature and
changes in the seasons comes one of the most appreciated parts of Autumn in Modesto – the rainbow of reds, oranges, and yellows as leaves around Modesto begin to turn color. While there are several varieties of trees in town that change color with the season, the most prevalent tree that puts on the leafy show is the Modesto Ash Tree, which line many of Modesto’s older streets and neighborhoods. If you have enjoyed the shade provided by a Modesto Ash during the summer, or watched its leaves turn golden in the Fall, then you can channel your appreciation back to one singular tree: Old Granddad. Lovingly given the moniker by the community, Old Granddad was the original Modesto Ash Tree that was the source of all Modesto Ash here locally and around the world. For the original Modesto Ash being so distinct to Modesto and for its wide use throughout the 1930’s-1960’s, the Landmark Preservation Commission had formally recommended Old Granddad to be designated a city landmark in October 1989. City Council designated the tree a City Landmark in October 1990, making it City Landmark #4 and the first tree protected in the city for its historical significance. First planted in West Side Park (now Cesar Chavez Park) sometime between 1904 and 1911 by Louis Rose, Modesto’s first parks superintendent, Old Granddad was found to be no ordinary variety of Arizona Ash as had been thought when purchased from Francher Creek Nursery. The difference was discovered by city horticulturalist Lenard Brooks in 1927, and it was determined the tree was its own unique variety or mutated ash. Because the tree grew quickly and provided great shade, the tree had samples removed to graft onto other ash saplings to propagate the new variety. This production FOLLOW US:

continued as City crews widely planted the Modesto Ash along city streets, neighborhoods, and parks through the 1960’s – accounting for 15,000 trees in Modesto at one time! But unfortunately for the tree variety, not all green was gold as its quick growth yielded invasive roots and overplanting allowed for fungus to affect large swaths across town. However, with an estimated life span of 50-60 years, Old Granddad far exceeded that and many of Modesto’s current ash trees have beaten those odds as well. And with recent Measure H funding going into effect, the City Forestry Division has been hard at work addressing the maintenance needs of Modesto’s old ash trees. When the grand 80-foot-tall tree began to show its age and deterioration, creative solutions were deployed from 1940-1992 to prolong the beloved tree’s life. A concrete implant was set in the trunk, a system of cables was used to anchor the tree to a central wagon wheel, and nine steel crutch supports were put in place to hold up the tree’s vast branches. Despite these efforts, sadly, Old Granddad was removed on December 20, 2019 out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of park goers and visitors of the Maddux Youth Center. The City Forestry Division, however, did take cutting samples from the old tree prior to its removal to allow for possible future replacement if grafted. So as we start to see the beautiful display of leaves turning this Fall, we can all say a collective thank you to Old Granddad, and the dedicated City tree specialists who had cared for Modesto’s Original Ash Tree for over 100 years.
were recently held. It’s always nice to see some artists from my own series go home with prizes. But something is missing from MAMA - has been for a while now - and we need to talk about it. The awards recognize local musicians in a wide range of genres; annual events; venues; DJs, and even comedians.....but the category that once honored those who actually bring live music to town vanished without a trace years ago. I was the penultimate winner of the Best Live Music Promoter statue in 2017, but by 2019 the award was retired despite a host of superb musical programmers hosting supremely cool things on our music scene. This makes as much sense as an Academy Awards show with no ‘Best Director’ category. While I don’t go back quite as far as the founding of our city, my suspicion is that its Greatest Of All Time is hiding in plain sight among the musical movers active today. So let us take a moment to acknowledge a few of the visionary presenters making Modesto a more interesting place. John Griswold of Red Tie Arts is someone I very much enjoy supporting and collaborating with. He’s got a world music series in the fall/winter season that features an assortment of Latin flavors, along with Celtic, jazz, and a few other treats. Greg Edwards (Off The Air) is currently the top source of indie rock in town, along with singer-songwriter and other flavors. He’s back in action after several years’ hiatus following his migration to the Bay. Greg hosted fantastic lineups at Cafe Deva around
the time I first started out as a presenter, a few of which I was quick to poach talent from. Tina Driskill offered quite the diverse mix when she was head of programming at Sunday Afternoons At CBS: gypsy jazz, Argentine tango, Americana, opera, Celtic, and zydeco. With Tina at the helm, this quickly became my favorite local series to support. And now we come to my personal vote for G.O.A.T. - a powerhouse curating the highest form of musical expression. It’s the marvelous Opera Modesto, currently led by creative power couple Roy Stevens & Annalisa Winberg. The music of their full operas is heavenly beyond anything else I’ve heard on a stage. Smaller recitals are held throughout the year. A multilingual vocal revue takes place every December, in partnership with my own series - arguably the most fun small showcase either of us puts on. Their Summer Opera Institute builds up the next generation of opera talent. And their Story Into Song program, transforming classic books into opera experiences, has produced some of their most memorable creations. I’m plenty proud of the talent I’ve wrangled, and the standing ovations I’ve seen at my series, but whenever I settle in for an Opera Modesto experience, I’m reminded anew why they are a full octave above the rest. You can support some of these boss-level curators, and others like them, at these hot November concerts: Friday 11/3 - Portuguese fado star Ramana Vieira @ the State Theatre, 8 pm, $20-$40. Sunday 11/12 - Opera Modesto’s ‘Basso Bravado!’ with Nathan Stark & John Ames @ Mistlin Gallery, 2 pm, $20-$50. Saturday 11/25 - Red Tie Arts presents Tempest (Celtic rock) @ Papapolloni Bistro, 7:30 pm, $38-$48. Intimate performances. Infinite playlist. MODESTO UNPLUGGED. www. modestounplugged.co

Citizen Caine W E I V R Eric Caine INTE
By Chris Murphy
MV: Do you think that people don’t know what is really true, or are they just trying to go along? EC: There is a widespread knowledge deficit about issues like homelessness and water. I don’t think people are so much “trying to go along” as trying to survive. It’s become harder to enter and stay in the middle class. The very wealthiest among us are content with the status quo. Others are frustrated at the decline of the working and middle classes.
Local news and journalism is really important.
The free and independent press at risk, newsroom budgets have been slashed and our common dialog is cloudy as people seek shelter in their own social media bubbles. Sound ominous? Maybe, but that is one of the reasons that I started ModestoView back in 1997. We need a place for a continuous positive dialog. Not spin, but focus on the good. I had always assumed the local news would be handled and that good local journalists would digging into important issues and holding power accountable. We really can’t count on that in the future and we look to alternatives that have good and reliable and researched information. Eric Caine was a long-time community columnist for the Modesto Bee. For a time, we both regularly contributed to the Bee and it was an important part of community dialog along with other voices like John Michel Flint and others. Over the last few years, Valley Citizen has been stepping in and doing thorough investigations and is building a following. They have been one of the vocal advocates for the homeless, which in the spirit of Thanksgiving and helping those in need, is an important focus. The image of Flint is on the masthead of the Valley Citizen. Flint was a very direct columnist and didn’t flinch from the truth. Flint passed away in and Eric Caine one of his contemporaries has taken the lead in creating a well-organized news and information site. The issues surrounding homeless and inequality are a primary focus and these are hard to talk about, but tackling the tough subjects moves us forward and these things affect all of us. There are also

MV: What do you think will happen with local newsgathering? EC: It’s hard to be optimistic about newsgathering at this moment. However, I see two general trends: (1) The news giants will continue to broaden their scope and grow; prime example is the New York Times. (2) Niche news sources with a close focus on local news will develop and become sustainable. Most will remain small scale while fulfilling a dire need for local news, especially news that covers politics, government, and the environment.
important insights about our local living, nature and local wildlife, birds in particular. Eric is a retired English professor at Merced College. He is a UC Berkeley grad (Go Bears!) and has depth of knowledge and great ability to communicate. Let’s get to know Eric Caine and see how we can all learn more. ModestoView: What did you enjoy most about teaching English? Eric Caine: I’ve always enjoyed reading and the opportunity to revisit some of my favorite books and essays while looking closely for the “lessons” they contain with the purpose of communicating those lessons was always enjoyable. MV: What attracted you to become a columnist for the Bee back in the day? EC: The Bee had a contest. Since I was teaching writing, I decided to try to experience writing for publication. MV: Why did you start the Valley Citizen?
MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE
EC: I felt there was a need that local media were not meeting. I began mostly with water stories because the appropriation and exploitation of a public resource for private gain is one of the least understood issues throughout the Valley. MV: You and John Michael Flint had a different approach to events and issues, how did he become the inspiration for Valley Citizen? EC: John was an honest man who believed in the pursuit of truth through good journalism. I would like to think his spirit animates our quest to pursue truth and justice. MV: Over the last 20 years, how have the issues changed in our community? MV: The biggest change is the burgeoning growth of homelessness and poverty. Water has been an issue all along, but people are beginning to understand that it will grow in importance with the oncoming rush of climate change.
MV: How do you think we will make some big moves on combating homelessness, is there a big solution in our quiver of resources? EC: There is no one “big solution.” We will make big moves if and when the public becomes better informed about the forces that are driving homelessness, including rising costs and stagnant wages, housing shortages, and broken systems of care. It is crucial that we stop demonizing and dehumanizing homeless people. Our current tactics for dealing with homelessness are cruel and inhumane. We need to recognize that the majority of homeless people are human beings in dire need through no fault of their own. MV: Homelessness has been an issue for centuries, what makes it so different now? EC: The difference now is that it is so widespread and continues side by side with huge concentrations of wealth in fewer and fewer hands. When fewer and fewer people have more and more money, more and more people have less and less money. America has more than enough resources to mitigate extreme poverty. It lacks the political will to do so. MV: There is so much more happening in our community, what are things you would like to cover more if you had the resources? EC: I would focus more on our County Board of Supervisors, City Council, representatives in the House of Congress, and our local representatives at the state level. I would do much more on water and the environment.

MV: What do you want people to know about Valley Citizen that they may not know? EC: The Valley Citizen is informed and inspired by local citizens. They are the brains and backbones behind every story.
NOVEMBER 2023
MV: Are you looking for contributors and what can people do to help spread the word about what you are doing? EC: Best way to “spread the word” is by word of mouth. Ask your friends whether they’ve seen the latest story on the City of Modesto’s tactics for dealing with homelessness or the latest update on the race for congress. I will always look closely at contributions with a local focus.
AT THE GALLO CENTER! BOHEMIAN QUEEN NOVEMBER 1 PIAF! THE SHOW NOVEMBER 5
MV: What do you most enjoy about Modesto? EC: I live in a great neighborhood and we have a vibrant local arts scene.
SUGAR SKULL NOVEMBER 7 RIDERS IN THE SKY NOVEMBER 10
MV: What do you wish most for Modesto? EC: I hope we will be better able to express the will of the people when the people are better informed and more engaged in local issues.

MV: And finally, Beatles or Stones? EC: Stones. I did, however, very much enjoy Ringo Starr’s recent appearance here.

One of Modesto’s most anticipated openings has finally arrived. The Standard Pub is now open, with a new look, larger bar and a nod to the traditions that made it the iconic place that people are excited to experience. Nelson Ramirez has been a big part of Modesto’s restaurant and bar community for many years. I first met Nelson when he was part of the team at Bacchus, and the then newly opened Boardroom in downtown Modesto years ago. Since then, he has developed the very successful Rusty Nail in downtown Ceres teaming up with Sam Khacho. For years, one of Modesto’s most popular places was Monaco’s, home to Modesto’s old guard, with large servings, strong drinks and became a home for Modesto’s football and other coaches for regular afterhours. Over the years, it became Coach’s Corner when it was sold to Chubb Harakh, it’s long time cook. When Chubs and Krystal retired, Nelson decided to follow his goal of opening a full-service restaurant. Since then, and emerging from Covid, it has been a long road full of unexpected detours and surprises but after a lot of work, imagination, renovation and some great vision, it is open. The look is all new, clean dark walls and floors, beautiful wood paneling and dividers and the first thing the locals will recognize is that it is now one big room with a big peninsula bar. Traditionalists will be pleased that the local sport memorabilia remains. Nelson explained, “one of the reasons I wanted to do this was to build on the traditional, but bring a new style and open feeling”. The retro sports pairs nicely and there is even a wall of the collected football helmets donated over the years by the Coach’s Club. Sports fans will notice the array of many TVs so you never miss a thing.

The Standard Pub
Nelson has been working hard to build a completely new team, which has been a challenge coming out of Covid. Visitors will recognize some of Modesto’s most experienced servers, Heather Patterson, Jade Gray and Tawnie Thomas. Chef Michael Goularte has been preparing a menu that will please both the previous clientele as well as exciting new clientele and Chef Alejandro Baliel heads up the kitchen. One thing for sure is The Standard kept the famous “broasted” chicken. This is a long-time fan favorite. But look for new tasty rib eye steaks, pork Osso Bucco, spicy chicken sandwich, the “brisket” burger, a full line of salads and made to share appetizers, meat and cheese boards and so much more. The fish and chips are my current fave and sharable. The truffle fries are amazing and are the perfect side for a quick cocktail break.

The Standard Pub is open daily, and addition to the current specialties, the menu will continue to evolve over the next few months. Nelson explains, “I really want consistency and perfect flavors. This is something that people expect when they return and also to make sure our new clients have a wonderful experience”. Breakfast fans can enjoy early Sunday hours beginning at 9:30. When you step up to the giant peninsula bar, you will find a huge brass beer tap loaded with local and national options. If you look behind the bar, note there are some tiki glasses as they will be serving some Polynesian specialties, including a legit MaiTai and their special Hawaii 5.0. Large ice cubes on the ready for all of your classic traditional favorites like the maple old fashioned. The bar is where Nelson’s specialties shine through as this experience
must be excellent and top shelf. Take some time to check out the old phone booth and grab a selfie. My wife Becky loves the dart board and there is plenty of room with tall tables, bar seating as well as the traditional booths that remain in the main dining room. This will be something special for the east side of Modesto and having one of Modesto’s legendary spaces open again is special. I hope to see you there and we can all build new stories and experiences.

The Mud Bowl
60 Years and Counting Ken White
The Mud Bowl. It’s about tradition and community, friendship and football. It is the longest, continuous mud football game still being played in the nation. It was 60 years ago that some high school classmates played separate football games at Roosevelt Junior High and Pike Park. A couple years later, they combined their games and gathered on a Thanksgiving morning at Thousand Oaks, now Kewin, Park to play a football game in the mud. At first, they picked teams. Then they divided into the Davis Class of ’66 versus “The Other Guys,” which included younger brothers and Downey guys. It was tackle, then touch, then flag, then touch again. There were drawn-up plays, stats, and trophies. A banquet the night before, a highlights video, commemorative apparel, breakfast at The ‘Dial the morning of, post-game cocktails after, and poker the night of. There have been injuries and some of the originals are no longer with us. The players that gathered that first Thanksgiving grew to 20 regulars plus or minus and now there may be as many as 40 players subbing in and out. Over the years, more than 500 players have participated. One current player quarterbacked his team to two national flag football championships. Another QB, who played with NFL great Gino Marchetti at MJC, hopes to still be playing at his century mark.

Look up, Look all around - Friends, we need a major shake up. Last month, a Gallup poll found that 51% of teens average 4.8 hours a day on social media. This should be a wake up call to everyone. 4.1 hours for 13-year-olds to 5.8 hours for 17-year-olds. exciting project. This designation presents opportunities to engage the community, by creating a natural history icon, by teaching environmental studies to students, and by enhancing local ecotourism.
A NOD TO MAGPIES Salmon Spawn - Fall Excursions
Did you know that salmon spawn the first two weeks of November? What is salmon spawning? It’s when salmon run up the river to their spawning grounds (where they deposit their eggs.) The salmon, which have migrated from the ocean, swim to the upper reaches of rivers where they spawn on gravel beds. After spawning, all Pacific salmon and most Atlantic salmon die, and the salmon life cycle starts over again. Basically the rivers are packed with bright, pink, red salmons and it’s a beautiful sight, so pack up the kids and get going! One of the best places to watch are from Roberts River Ferry Bridge or at the Knights Ferry— only 30 minutes from Modesto on Highway 132 or Highway 120/108! FOLLOW US:

BIG VIEW
By Chris Murphy
Did everyone have a fun Halloween? Yes? ...Great!
NOW it is time to start thinking about the Holidays. Our
mornings are beautiful right now. The flavors are intense and it’s finally sweater weather. The nights come earlier, and the café evenings are magic. I know I will be thankful for a hard freeze that will wipe out the mosquitos! As we cheer on football, and the snacking that goes along with it, the real payoff comes at the end of the month. Thanksgiving is a time for gathering, conversing, playing and sharing family and friends day. It is NOT a shopping day. Take time, unplug, do a 1-day digital detox and really connect with people have fun cooking together, get the kids and grandkids involved. That is what I am truly thankful for. Thanksgiving can start with some family running fun. This a great family event. What’s better than a 5K run to get out there and rev up your body and get a good work out before diving in to the turkey, mashed potatoes/cauliflour or cranberry whatever, and of course the pumpkin pie. You support MJC Athletics by running the Turkey Trot. Park football is also Thanksgiving. Heck, Dolly Parton will be performing for half time so you can’t miss that! Many families and friends have long standing traditions, and this month we look back on the legendary Modesto Mud Bowl by Ken White. Take time to share your time. Teach your kids to bake cookies or make hand turkeys for the table. Play Jenga, turkey bingo, and find things that are free and fun. Encourage interactions that pass on family traditions and if you are new family, start your own new traditions. It will be fun and you will learn a lot about each other.
Twilight Time
This is not just a great Moody Blues song, but it is that transition to Christmas and Hannukah after Thanksgiving. These are three days that mean different things to different people. For those of you that are off on Black Friday, if you are into Black Friday deals, let’s keep our dollars local. Many of our locally owned stores offer their own special. Many downtown boutiques like Intrinsic Elements will be offering amazing deals and packages. Also make sure to check out McHenry Village as the stores transform for the holidays and take a break with our friends at Steward and Jasper for tasty holiday treats.
Black Friday Tips
In our family network, Friday is a downtown pub crawl day. For some reason, it is more fun to hang out with friends, and enjoy the fall flavors and tastes. From Churchkey, to Fuzio, Tresettis, Harvest Moon and The Goat, there are some great places in downtown to stroll, hang out, enjoy some tunes and get into the season.

Let me briefly introduce myself:
My name is Joseph Zimmerer. I am part of the “Revibe The Vibe” team that organizes a section of Downtown Modesto Partnerships’ “Domo First Friday” street fair, I write this column in Modesto View Magazine, “Eye On Modesto Hip Hop Culture” which you are currently reading, and I am the creator of multiple, smaller beat battles that have all culminated into our next big event: “Crush Congregation Beat Battle”, which happens this year on November 11th, 2023 with 16 beat makers competing elimination style. This Beat Battle will include special performances by the Bboys and BGirls from Knock Squad as well as D.J. True Spokes and M.C. Zeps (Rhymosaurs, Revibe The Vibe), and as a very special treat, we are bringing out world-renowned producer and turntablist extraordinaire D.J. Fresh off the album series, “The Tonite Show”, with production credits that include artists such as, E-40, Larry June, Curren$y, Raekwon (Wu-Tang Clan), Grouch & Eligh, and many others. he Beatmakers that will be battling in this year’s beat battle include: TOONWRLD, CELADOR, NEIKO MARTINEZZ, BENNETT VICKERY, OHRICKY, JMMY JMMY, BROTHER3, ATOM RODRIGUEZ ML3, A MILLION BEATS, CMONKEEDO, SHON J, JSTEEZ, POETIQBEETZ, KEVYKEV,,SYDEQUEST.
Modesto’s Hip Hop scene needs events like these. In the past decade, we have seen a whole generational gap of hip-hop missing in the Central Valley. We want to change that. We at Revibe The Vibe are dedicated to helping push forward the arts in a positive and public way. This Beat Battle at the historic State Theatre gives hip-hop in the 209 the kind of visibility it has never had before, which is why I am so excited to create future hubs for the next wave of cultural influencers, whether it be dancers, beat makers, poets, graffiti artists, or just enthusiastic young minds that need these outlets. Thank you to our sponsors: Collins Electric, Modesto Subaru, Kick N’ Taco, Apparel Graphics, and Burn And Rave Podcast. Extra Huge shoutout to the Revibe The Vibe Team (Zeps, Imax, Livic, E-Nock, That Fly Lord, Tekboi, GrimBoogie, El Chuy, KnockSquad) and to all the friends, family, and supporters of our community. Let’s keep this momentum. Tickets are $20.00 and are available at The State Theatre Website. Doors open at 6 pm and the show starts at 7 pm. This is an all-ages event.

Positive Role Model at 51 in Fitness
Last month’s FitView was a reminder that we all can look and feel our best at any age. I’m saying, 51 is the new 21 and I’m not alone. One man I know shows this example so well. His name is Pedro Teves. I met Pedro Teves many years back and we instantly became friends. We both share the same passion for a healthy lifestyle. Outside of our friendship, there’s no doubt that he’s an inspiration not only to myself but also to his students. Pedro is not only a High School History teacher but also a devoted husband to his lovely wife Monika, a great father of three young children, and a hard worker in all that he does. I’m just amazed and motivated by the man. He is all that above and yet he still finds the time to exercise and live the healthiest life possible with all the hustle and bustle it can bring. I’d say please enjoy my interview with the hope that he will give you the motivation to be the best you can be at any age. My friend, Pedro, is a positive role model for us all. MV. We have received amazing contributions from local Modesto businesses that will drive us forward in the next phase of our construction. Over the past two years, we have made tremendous progress completing sewer, fire suppression, seismic retrofitting, and electrical projects throughout the Museum. At the same time, we have been serving our community by successfully offering classic car sales by consignment, providing kids’ activities through community outreach, and supporting fellow non-profits through our event center. THANK you to all who have supported Graffiti USA. We are all part of Team Modesto. As we celebrate Giving Tuesday (November 28th), a global day of generosity, we highlight the importance of supporting non-profit organizations like the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, aiming to share, educate, and inspire visitors. NOW It is time to build an immersive experience and transform our Museum into a backdrop reminiscent of 1962. Over the Winter, the Museum exterior will come to life as we complete demolition, storm drain, grading, and paving projects in our parking lot, thanks to our generous donors. Your support on Giving Tuesday will be tremendous in helping the Museum continue its mission to complete this monumental project. By donating, you contribute to a community center that will be here for generations to come and enjoy. Whether you are a car enthusiast or appreciate the cultural and historical value of creating a Museum that celebrates our local culture, your contribution will make a difference. Regardless of size, every donation helps the Museum continue its vital work! Join us on Giving Tuesday and donate to the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum in person, via the QR code below, or our website!
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month and Dia de los Muertos,
the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum is showcasing Alfonso Gonzalez’s 1985 Chevy Monte Carlo through the month of November. This exhibit pays homage to the rich cultural heritage and artistic expression of the Hispanic community. Low-rider have a unique & distinct style that originated in MexicanAmerican communities. Known for their vibrant colors, intricate designs, and hydraulics that allow for dynamic movement, low-riders are more than just vehicles - they are works of art on wheels. Visitors to the Museum will have the opportunity to admire Gonzalez’s Dia de los Muetos themed low-rider, with windows beautifully engraved with calaveras (sugar skulls) and flowers. The custom paint job and intricate detailing exemplifies the fusion of art and automotive culture. Gonzalez is the second owner who acquired the car 8 years ago in 2015. It was in its original condition, just like you would have gotten it from the dealership, with 83,000 miles on it. We invite everyone to experience the beauty and craftsmanship of low-rider cars while embracing the diversity and cultural heritage of the Hispanic community. This special feature is a testament to the enduring legacy of low-riders and their impact on American car culture. Open Fridays and Saturdays 10 am-4 pm through the end of November.
Special Event Update: The exclusive November 12 fundraiser showing of American Graffiti with Candy Clark and Mackenzie Phillips has been rescheduled to Spring 2024. Sorry for the inconvenience and we will post a new date for this special event soon.

What’s Up Modesto?
I hope you all had a great October. November is the month of giving thanks, so I would like to share things I am thankful for here in Modesto! Modesto offers plenty of reasons to be thankful as we enter the season of gratitude. I am grateful for the amazing weather we have year-round, especially in the fall. November is the perfect time to explore some of the beautiful parks in Modesto, such as Dry Creek, which is a perfect location for senior photos. Get some exercise in the crisp air on the Virginia Trail, a great trail to walk your dog. Graceada Park is a cute location for a picnic. There are many more parks in Modesto that offer picturesque walking trails. Whether you’re going on a photoshoot, picnic, or walk, Modesto always provides the ideal backdrop. I am grateful for the amazing community we have in Modesto. Our residents are actively involved in local charities, organizations, and community events. We are all committed to taking care of our amazing
By Grace McNamera city and to keep making it better. I love how every event we have in Modesto always has a great turnout. This includes the Porchfest, the MAMA Awards, the Graffiti Parade, performances by talented musical artists, and so many more. There are many bands that started out with the Valley Music Institute. If you have thought about trying out your musical talent then I recommend trying it! I’m thankful for school dance programs. Having had experience in dance programs at two different high schools now, I can easily say we have fantastic dance programs in our city. I’ll be performing at the Gallo Center this November with my CCHS Dance team! I am also thankful for the people here, as I spend time with old friends and make new ones too! When I drive through Modesto, there are so many memories made here in my almost eighteen years with people and places. The older you get the more things change but the memories last. It is important to recognize the many reasons to be thankful for our beautiful and welcoming city!

Time to be Grateful By Mary Layton Once again it’s the month of Thanksgiving. For many people in this country there will be the traditional food feast with all the fixings to go with it. Families and friends come together to celebrate the love for life and its bounty. In these tumultuous and uncertain times a tradition like Thanksgiving is a welcome pause from the busyness of our daily lives. We have some time to relax, enjoy and remember what truly matters. Life has been bringing more challenges to most everyone and it matters that we get along with each other, appreciate others and be the most accepting people that we can be. Even within our families and circle of friends it can be hard to see eye to eye at times, but I think it is when we can accept each others differences that we can be stronger together
and more resilient in the long run. It’s easy to take things for granted… but feeling gratitude is what can put a completely different spin on life. Suddenly we feel there’s hope. This year I want to give thanks to everything that is good and beautiful in my life. I’m grateful for our students that have shared their knowledge, expertise and kindness with us so generously. I am grateful for all the health professionals in our school as well as in our community. I love that our stores and markets and restaurants offer diverse tastes. I am grateful for my neighbors, my family and friends who I can always count on. I am very grateful to live in this fertile valley and in this town that has so much to offer and is getting more attractive every year. Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving! Modesto Sound awarded $255,000 by the KDA Creative Corps By Middagh Goodwin
CALIFORNIA AUDIO ROOTS PROJECT (CARP)se Showca
GIVING THE STAGE TO MODESTO’S UNDERSERVED Modesto Sound, a nonprofit organization
dedicated to empowering youth through music and artistic media, recently received a generous grant of $255,000 from KDACC. This funding was awarded specifically for the California Audio Roots Project, an initiative aimed at capturing and preserving the diverse voices of the community in the Central Valley. The primary goal of the California Audio Roots Project is to create an extensive collection of recorded stories, poems, and songs that reflect the experiences and struggles of individuals living in the Central Valley. By providing a platform for people to share their personal narratives, the project aims to foster connection and understanding among community members facing similar challenges. Brenda Francis, the founder of Modesto Sound, expressed deep gratitude for the grant and the continued opportunity to advance their important work. With a strong focus on social justice and community engagement, Modesto Sound has been actively involved in various art programs, made possible by KDACC’s funding. These programs have not only enriched the cultural landscape but have also generated a significant number of employment opportunities, with a total of 611 jobs created throughout Central California. Under the guidance of Janet Seay, the Executive Director of Modesto Sound, the California Audio Roots Project has been conducting interviews with individuals residing in the 95354 zip code area. These interviews delve into personal struggles, including topics such as homelessness, addiction, abuse, and mental health issues. To ensure a wide reach, Modesto Sound has partnered with two local community radio stations and the public library in the 95354 zip code for this project. To encourage active participation, Modesto Sound has implemented a compensation system for residents who contribute to the podcast recordings. The primary target audi-
30
ence for these podcasts is the residents of the 95354 zip code, allowing them to connect with and relate to the stories shared. Access to these podcasts is facilitated through the HPI work, which provides valuable data on social conditions that influence health. Andrea Hansen, the Program Director of KDACC, expressed great enthusiasm for Modesto Sound’s grant and the positive impact it will have on the community. The grant program received an overwhelming response, with $21.7 million worth of grant application requests, demonstrating the immense need for support in the arts and community engagement. For additional information about the projects and initiatives supported by KDACC, please visit their website at kdacreativecorps. org. The KDA Creative Corps, a pilot program under the California Creative Corps initiative, plays a vital role in promoting community and civic engagement. Through various artistic expressions, this program raises awareness about critical issues such as water and energy conservation, climate change, and emergency preparedness. Modesto Sound remains committed to its mission of empowering youth by equipping them with valuable job skills in music and artistic media. In addition to its youthfocused programs, Modesto Sound provides the community with enriching radio programming and live concerts. For more information about the California Audio Roots Project and the incredible work of Modesto Sound, please visit their website at modestosound.org or contact them directly at 209-573-0533.
