Pic from Picnic at Pops This is one of my favorite nights in Modesto. There are so many outstanding events in our community, from MoBand in June and July to the end of summer Picnic at the Pops on the grounds of the Gallo Winery, there are truly special times to hang out with your family and friends. Things like this make the greater Modesto area special and really make us a community. You should make a point to do these things and really enjoy your time.

mo-town-mail Dear Modesto View Folks, Last year's inaugural Oktoberfest was a resounding success, so several Gustine community organizations are again teaming up to present the second annual event on Saturday, 10/4/08. As last year, it will held in conjunction with Wolfsen's Meat and Sausage's annual sausage tasting. This year, the City of Gustine is the event sponsor. The Oktoberfesta Organizing Committee would be very grateful for your help publicizing the event. Thanks, Rick Nagle Hi ModestoView I’m from the UK and was in California on holiday in the Spring of this year. I had a night in Modesto but I didn’t know the place and had no idea what I was going to do. In my hotel room (Best Western Town House Lodge - very nice, excellent value) I found a copy of ModestoView and within minutes of starting to read it had found somewhere close by to eat (Hero’s Sports Lounge and Pizza). ModestoView kept me occupied while drinking some excellent beer (just like us Brits like it) and eating my splendid Pizza (the Texan). While reading ModestoView, I was struck by the obvious sense of pride and community you have in Modesto. Local people contributing to and supporting their own town to make it the pace they want it to be. You should be proud of

yourselves, your community and your excellent local ModestoView. I hope to be back in Modesto sometime and I will certainly look for a copy of ModestoView if I am. Best wishes to all of you and thanks for making my stay a great one. Andy Rawlins Swindon UK Chris says: We emailed Andy and told him that his next pint is on us when he comes back to Modesto.

greetingsweb=modestoview.com from modesto! Thanks also to Noel Rocha Design that was able to read our minds every month and get Modesto View to Mattos Printing in Newman. Thanks to my wife Becky, who has put up with my and all of our crazy projects.

Greetings Modesto Fans:

Abby, Becky, And Madison at Cal

Now, my family life and my family business need to take priority and it is time for ModestoView to be a thing of the past. Those of you that have dealt with family health issues can understand and above all, my girls come first. I sure hope that you have enjoyed ModestoView.

I want to make a special thanks to my company, Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group and Mike McNulty for always supporting our community and giving back to so many local organizations and in this case providing most excellent distribution service for each ModestoView distribution location under the guidance of Samuel Adjetey, the hardest working person in the whole world.

ModestoView has been a labor of love for our community since 1997 when our original PlazaCam went live with my friends Noah Juergenson, Scott Camble, and Elliot Gage. We have delivered community info, events, fun, pictures, video, the very first live webcasts, video and photo galleries to our community, all, 100% locally created and printed.

I will still help lead the Modesto Area Music Awards,(the MAMAs) as music, along with my family are my passions. I want to thank everyone who ever read ModestoView in print or on-line. Thank you. We had fun, changed our community for the better and the best wishes to everyone.

Now back to the sweet part. I want to thank our contributors that have been the best voices for our communities. ModestoView was a volunteer effort and was never designed to be a big profit center, only a voice for the people of our community. That was our mission. Spread the word, spread the love and spread a positive message. Thanks to Rick Serpa, Abbey Murphy, Madison Murphy, Megan Serpa, Randy Siefkin, George Osner, Jim Christiansen, Greg Edwards, Jill Ferris, Pam Hays, Kay Osborn, Eric Benson, D. Hear ModestoView Live

October 2008

Now the bitter part. This is the last issue of ModestoView. We have had a great time changing the conversation here in the greater Modesto area. Our magazine shook up the local entertainment media scene, the traditional media changed and updated their format to be more like ModestoView and do a better job showcasing local talent, culture and arts. That was a great compliment. Other new magazines have emerged and show that our local living is very interesting and we should be proud. Our work here was fun, successful and I hope you have enjoyed it and are proud of what we have accomplished.

There are big thanks to these people or ModestoView Magazine would have never existed. These are the people that believe in Modesto and what we are trying to do. Vince Porter of Alfred Mathews and the believed in ModestoView from day one and if you ever buy a car, you must buy one from him. I love my Yukon Hybrid. Ben Barnes from Harland Jewelers is another star and deserves your patronage. He has beautiful jewelry. Chris Ricci from the Fat Cat and Chris Ricci presents should be our next mayor. Judy and Larry Rackley from the Dented Chef are the some of the best people in town have the best cookware and Mark and Charlyne Smallwood of Harvest Moon were there for every single issue and their food is some of the best I have ever had. Needless to say, ModestoView was more about friendship than pure business.

CONNECTIONS WOES Avoid a connection flight with less than an hour between flights. If possible, book the earliest possible flight. This way if there are delays or mechanicals, your chances are higher in making your connection.

Always pack a snack bag in case you are stuck at an airport with no restaurant and there is a delay. Comfort food such as almonds, chocolate etc. Carry an empty bottle through security and fill it at the drinking fountain once you are inside the gate area. Always have water with you to stay hydrated.

LOST BAGGAGE? Always bring a carry on bag on-board with the bare essentials. If your luggage does get lost, you have what you need to get by until your luggage reaches you.

BETTER SAFE THEN SORRY From experience: If you are on a flight and the oxygen mask drop, don’t wait for the flight attendant to tell you to put it on, just buckle up and put on your mask. The Flight Attendant is primarily there for you safety.

3-1-1 RULE ON LIQUIDS Liquid explosives are still a threat so limit the amount of liquid you are carrying. Remember 3-1-1 3ounce bottles or less for all liquids, gels and aerosols placed in -1 quart sized, clear plastic zip top bag -1 bag per passenger. LICENSE OR IDENTIFICATION PLEASE To speed the security process, have your ID and boarding pass out and ready as you approach the checkpoint.

Theresa Minjares is based out of Sacramento Airport and resides in Modesto. Along with her career as a flight attendant, Theresa is the Booking Agent for Reese Entertainment. She currently books a number of local acts as well as name acts throughout California. Be sure to visit her website at www.reeseentertainment.org. Modesto is incredibly fortunate. We are lucky enough to have some of the best restaurants in California manned by some of the most talented chefs in the state right in our backyard. The Central Valley’s reputation as the “breadbasket of the world” gives Modesto’s finest chefs first access to the freshest produce found anywhere on the planet. In addition, nationally-envied purveyors like Gallo Winery, Sciabica Olive Oil, Fiscalini Farmstead Cheese, Stanislaus Food Products, and Word of Mouth Bakery, which are all local and family owned, give us entry to some of the most excellent food in the world. As the sun sets on ModestoView magazine, I’ve been thinking about the various amazing chefs I have had the opportunity to interview over the past 2+ years. Some have left Modesto to move on to some of the world’s great dining epicenters of food, such as Chris Schully’s Cayenne to New York, or Eric Magnani of Bacchus to San Francisco…one of this writer’s favorite chefs, Pierre Zaldua from Gervasoni’s, is preparing delicious Basque meals in that ‘big kitchen in the sky.’ Some restaurants have unfortunately had to close their doors, such as Aqua Shi, Nosh, and 1505. What are we left with? Only some of the finest independent family-owned restaurants in the entire Central Valley! These dedicated establishments consistently continue to offer great tasting food and service all at reasonable prices. Frequent readers of my column know my personal favorites continue to be Harvest Moon, Galletto (be sure to check out Miss Martini’s article), Dewz, Clayton’s, BLVD, Gervasoni’s, Skewers, Concetta, China Gate, Guru Indian Palate, Bacchus, Minnie’s, and Chefs of New York Pizzeria. Modesto restaurants also excel in extraordinary service. Some of Modesto’s greats are Will at Dewz, April from Clayton’s, and Jerry at Galletto. Wonderful wine service is always delivered by Raphael at Galletto, Nick at Dewz, and the entire staff at Sip’s Bistro. Impeccable service has the ability to transform a great meal into a memorable one.

Have you been to downtown Modesto lately? This is an exciting time as the new Gallo Center is open, the State is presenting great shows and we are seeing some brand new restaurants and nightclubs opening up that will make your experience complete and the winter nights are beautiful.

Parking There are parking garages at 9th and L, 11th and K, 11th and I, and 12th and H

Many restaurants start serving dinner early to that you can get a nice meal in before the shows and movies that begin at 7 or 7:30.

D. Martini is our mistress of the night, taking you on a special cocktail tour

Comfort and class intertwine naturally Lushies, Ms. Tarah Whitfield is a bartender on top of her game! Charming, personable, and tactful in the ways of proper pouring, Tarah has been excelling at bartending for approximately two and a half years. For ou r interview, Tarah took me on a lovely tour of the gorgeous Galletto Ristorante all the while she chatted animatedly about wine, martinis, and working at the restaurant; it was clearly apparent that this is a girl who genuinely loves her job, and is also damn good at it. When she isn’t dishing up smashing drinks, Tarah, a fellow gin and tonic drinker, studies marine biology

Though Galletto is a seemingly wineonly-saturated restaurant, cocktails are still incredibly popular. No kidding! The decadent cocktail list is tempting enough to make anyone swoon (see: Basil Grand Martini: Grand Marnier, Chambord, Kettle One, white cranberry juice, and fresh basil and strawberries)! Galletto is always on top of alcohol distribution lists, bringing in an impressive array of fabulous stock, prompting fellow bartender Jeremy Lovejoy to comment that Galletto has the ‘best bar arsenal in town.’ Lovejoy is preaching the truth, Lushies. Galletto sports two full bars, seventeen different beers, 600 bottles of vino (with twenty-seven by the glass, all held within the gorgeous downstairs wine cellar), and arguably the best single-malt scotch collection in town....and that’s just a modest taste, dears. Bar too overwhelmingly awesome? Not to worry! Galletto provides a number of excellent alternatives. Firstly, if you have yet to dine at Galletto, you must rearrange all prior priorities and stick lunch/dinner at the top of your list; the kitchen, under Chef John Surla, is a renown pillar of fine-dining perfection. You must also be sure to drop in regularly also Lushies, new menu items are introduced every month. Sundays will now reign as your favorite day of the week thanks to Galletto brunch, held from 10-2, which dishes out excellent crepes and omelettes along with, naturally,

mimosas and bloody marys (or, as I call them, the breakfast of champions!). Food too overwhelmingly awesome? Why not unwind by choosing a cigar from the twenty different selections? Or why not a rousing game of bocci ball in the outside patio? Going to the Gallo Center for the Arts? Be sure to bring your ticket stub in for a discount. Galletto is able to accommodate lovely events and banquets. What makes Galletto specifically unique, says Tarah, is its timelessness, “you could put Galletto absolutely anywhere and it would still be a success.” Galletto goes out of their way to get it all perfect for you. Is there anything Galletto Ristorante doesn’t have? No Lushies, they honestly have it all: beautiful surroundings, fabulous food, to-die-for drinks, an incredibly accommodating staff, a stellar wine cellar, bocci ball, cigars, and Ms. Tarah Whitfield. Galletto Ristorante has bested the ideal blend of elegance, warmth, wine, and family. Swoon! This is Miss Martini affectionately signing out. I’ll see you at the bar Lushies!

**Miss Martini note: An enormous thank you to all of the establishments who supported ModestoView and granted me the amazing opportunity to nose around and ask too many questions! I had a ridiculous amount of fun! Cheers!**

Here it is Lushies, plain and simple: Galletto Ristorante is FABULOUS (note: adj., def: great, extraordinary, surpassing expectations, amazing) in every sense of the word. Galletto Ristorante: an excellent night out!

at MJC. Brains and Bombay! Girl after my own lushy heart!

modestoview magazine

Doing a piece on Galletto Ristorante was no easy task, Lushies. Oh sure, chatting it up with the lovely staff in the restaurant’s beautiful atmosphere and having a handful (or two) of stellar drinks while making some notes was easy as a cold shot of Jack; but when it came down to me actually sitting down and vainly attempting to convey the class, elegance, and warmth that Gallettos effortlessly pours out into a modest one-page write-up.....now that’s difficult. Therefore, I will attempt to make this simple as possible in order to prevent myself from authoring a short novel of praise.

layton’s has been serving up delicious food in downtown Modesto for 5 years. After a dramatic remodel of the restaurant 2 years ago Clayton’s not only serves great meals but also has one of the most comfortable dining venues in town. Add to that a great bar, friendly and attentive service and a classically trained chef, and you have a recipe for success. Executive Chef Robb Perez is a Culinary Institute of America graduate who has a genuine passion for the food that he prepares. Modesto view (MV) sat down with Chef Robb (CR) in the dining room at Clayton’s to get his views and opinions on a number of subjects. MV: Why did you decide to become a chef? CR: I have always had a passion for food. There are many amazing cooks in my family, but it really started out with my parents, and particularly my mother. She instilled in me a love of good food and a discipline to learn.

MV: What is the most important quality that a chef possess? CR: A passion for food! Also, a commitment to using the highest quality ingredients as well as the best seasonal ingredients. This allows me a great deal of creativity in the kitchen.

restaurants downtown? CR: We use local produced ingredients whenever possible. We live in the world’s bread basket which allows me source the highest quality fresh ingredients. I also source a lot of my produce at the downtown Farmer’s Market.

MV: Tell our readers about your training. CR: I started my formal culinary training at Columbia Junior College. From there I enrolled at the Culinary Institute of America in New York where I graduated in 2006. In addition, I studied at the Szechwan Institute of Higher Cuisine in China for five weeks. I also worked as a sous-chef in New York City and as a chef in Cleveland, Ohio.

MV: Have you ever cooked for anyone famous? CR: Donald Trump, he had a porterhouse steak and lobster tail. He’s a very good tipper. I also cooked for Nolan Ryan and Reggie Jackson, two baseball hall-of-famers. They also ordered steak.

MV: What is the most popular item on the menu? CR: The New York steak with house-made demi-glace. The daily fish special is also always very popular. MV: What sets Clayton’s apart from the other

MV: What are three items you always have in your refrigerator? CR: Grated parmesan cheese, butter, and heavy cream. I don’t have a cholesterol problem, but it could happen. MV: What is your culinary indulgence? CR: I have two. Modesto’s taco trucks, where I always order tacos pastor or a pastor

burrito. I also frequent In-n-Out Burger where I get a Double-Double “animal style”. MV: Outside of your culinary indulgences, where do you go out to eat locally? CR: Gervasoni’s, I always get their lambchops. They’re delicious! They also have great service and a great bar. MV: If you could invite any three people to dinner, who would you invite, and what would you prepare? CR: First, Pelé, the greatest soccer player ever; I am a huge fan. Next, my grandmother. She had a big influence on me and passed away before I had the opportunity to cook for her. Finally, Thomas Keller who is, in my opinion, the greatest chef in the world. We would start with an appetizer of shrimp tacos (they’re on the menu at Clayton’s) and I’d also prepare a BBQ bounty of ribs and steak. I would also cook my favorite dish: paella (Spanish saffron rice dish), which includes mussels, clams, chicken, chorizo, and vegetables.

he Next Downtown Modesto Third Thursday Art Walk will be October 16, same night as the Modesto Area Music Association Awards. Last year in July I got a chance to produce an Art and Music event for the Third Thursday Art Walk with the State Theatre, and was visited often enough by Chris Murphy, complete with coverage in Modesto View, and photos, where I’d joked we were working on a Best Small Venue MAMA award nomination to compete with friend Eric Benson and Blue Monday. 15 months later, working on our latest Art Walk event, with Eric doing the music at Clayton’s as Sandy Lynn and I displayed paintings and pastels, and over at State Theatre had P. Wexford’s Steve Kenworthy playing celtic music, a visual artists himself as Rosemarie Sturgill, Tricia Spenker and I did a show on printmaking, I read in Modesto View, that the State Theatre is a venue nominee, many of our music guests nominated for a MAMA award, but we weren’t as an event, but get the entire MAMA awards show in our usual October Third Thursday time slot. So bring your black tie and invitation, even pick up your Third Thursday Art Walk map, but be just the music October 16 at the State Theatre, but the map shows the other stops to be featuring art as usual. Art returns at the State Theatre on the Third Thursday schedule in November. Here is just a recap of the music guests, most nominated or actually won the MAMA award, such as Jon Valenti and Tara Tinsley. Our line up of musical art fans include Rachel Renae, Bob White, Joelle Maddyson, Dave Hanley, Rhythm Deluxe’s John Ady ( our most frequent music guest) Joe Barretta, Funky Tim of Minor Dischord, and a nod to Andres Cervantes and Solo Bassists, and Crissy Harris and Dirty Monday who played the stage for one of experiments in using the whole theatre as an art venue, and have worked with other of our visual art artists and set up crew in posting posters for State Theatre concerts and events, as part of our cooperative agreement with our host nonprofit to continue our mutual success in art, live concerts and film series. We are an art event anyway, but included the music, inspired by the art venue work that led to our gig at State Theatre, the Modesto Blues Festival, and the After Art Walk parties Continued on Page 30

209 Rap Artists Speak Their Minds (Nominees for 08 MAMA Hip Hop Awards) What is good 209? It’s that time of the year once again. I see new faces in the 209 rap game and the Motown Music awards are here. Nominated for Best Urban Hip Hop GRAINS OF SAND, LIVIN PROOF, MACKALOT, RUFF CITY, STARRZ,TL TRONIKFUQ & YUYO MC. So I hit up all the artist and asked them in this Email… And this is what they had to say! Note: Grains of Sand, Ruff City, TRONIKFUQ were not available for comment! YO WAS UP, CONGRATS ON THE NOMINATION! WHERE DO YOU SEE 209 HIP HOP GOING IN 2009? DO YOU FEEL 209 HOLDS THEIR OWN IN THE RAP GAME? ARTIST: THURM STARRZ WEBSITE: myspace. com/savstarrmusic

Hey there congrats on your nod also. I feel like the radio stations are taking a bigger interest in the 209 hip hop scene a lot more nowadays, and the music from the 209 is getting much better. The artists are stepping their game up for the most part. They are being more professional. Q1.As for were the rap scene will go in 2009, I think it's more of a question of where we as artists want to go. I feel that all 209 musicians need to expand farther than the 209 if they wish to be truly successful. We must get our music heard by the right people. Q2.I feel that if we wnt hip hop to pop hard in this central valley we must work together and pool our resources a lot more. There has been a little too much selfishness and, hating and back biting in our genre here in the valley. If we want ourselves to be successful we must do for ourselves. but if we want our area to gain a buzz we must collaborate and work together much more than we already do. Thanks for the interview. ARTIST: YUYO MC WEBSITE: YUYOMC.COM

Q1.No one will ever know with new artists and songs popping out all the time the Hip Hop Music scene stays strong as long as the label or artist stays loyal to the Rap Genre many great things can happen. Keeping new music and songs that attracts fans and or people thats what keeping Hip Hop alive. Q2.I honestly can say many artists and labels. Yes, but the true Hip Hop Artists in 209 who made lots of noise these past years are really taken the 209 Rap scene to a whole other level. Don’t sleep on 209. They’re on their music challenge just like any other city.

green by George Osner

Fall is Here

S

ince I’m attending the American Planning Association conference in Hollywood while writing this, I’ll start with a couple of comments gleaned from the meetings about global climate and sustainability:

consider a swap with the cousins, of friends or neighbors— maybe they have a great costume from last year that would be perfect. Dressing up in the parents’ clothes is also often good for grins. If all else fails, try the thrift shop, or costume rental.

In Vancouver, BC, after a brutal windstorm that uprooted or knocked down about 1000 heritage trees in the city’s Stanley Park, the citizens, business, and government have come together recognizing that changing storm severity is a symptom of climate change and are working to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Home grown entertainment is a fun feature of the season. Modesto has a corn maze, so that’s literally green . It’s next to Funworks at 4307 Coffee Rd in Modesto, Phone: 209-578-4386. If you’re on the West Side, Fantozzi Farms at 2550 Sperry Ave. in Patterson has over 4 miles of paths through 12 acres of corn, Phone: 209-892-2015. Up in San Joaquin County there is the ever-popular Dell’Osso Pumpkin Maze at 26 Stewart Road in Lathrop, phone 209-982-0833 (on the web at pumpkinmaze. com).

In Lake Tahoe, climate change is recognized as a serious threat to the continued viability of the lake as a crystal-clear gem of the mountains, and also as a cause of increasing wildfire threat. Centered around a theme “It’s about the Lake, stupid,” a wideranging coalition of organizations, individuals, businesses, and agencies are coming together to work on the problem. It’s October, that time of year for litlle pixies, ballerinas, ghouls, goblins, devils, angels, celebrities and hoboes running amok. A time when every desk in every office features some highfructose corn syrup packed sweet. Can this possibly be Green? First, as to costumes. Using the Recycler’s Mantra, consider a solution that doesn’t involve another new piece of chemicalimbued plastic and taffeta shipped from China that will go in the trash on November 1. Since your kids are probably not going to want to reuse last year’s costume, a couple of possible ideas:

As I am severely tempted by all the candy lying about in this season, I keep resorting to my CSA box (CSA is a Community Supported Agriculture—you subscribe and get a big box of farm produce each week direct from the farmer; mine is from Rancho Piccolo, ranchopiccolo.com, phone 209-205-0197). This is harvest season and there are lots of delicious healthy choices— fruits, vegetables, dried fruit, nuts, the list goes on. Remember, if it’s a whole food, it has a lot better chance of being healthy. Here’s to a healthy, safe, fun, green October for you and yours.

Tribute to Buck and Chester Modesto lost some musical legends in the last few months. We have talent that is truly amazing and it is sad when we lose a friend. Chester Smith and Erik Buck Townsend passed away and we will truly miss them. Both Chester and Buck Townsend were the recipients of our lifetime Modesto Area Music Award. Chester was one of the true originals of country music and was a radio pioneer and later a TV executive. He played music as

long as he could and had a resurgence over the last few years with his teamwork with long-time friend Merle Haggard. Buck Townsend raiser the bar for talent in Modesto bringing his world wide opera skills to Modesto with the creation of the Townsend Opera Players. Buck was a very generous with this time and talent and gave back to the community in so many ways.

As we go into the fall season, most of our lives are doing homework. This is kind of sad as this is our last ModestoView All-ages pages. We hope that we have shown some very fun things to do in town and we hope you have liked it. Halloween is our favorite time of the year. It is starting to get cooler, the nights are darker and this is an interesting time. Make sure that you tell your friends about the cool things you like to do and have a good 2008 and beyond.

Top 5 Things to do in October 1. Make your own Halloween costume shopping at a thrift store 2. Go cheer your friends that are playing soccer on Saturdays 3. Learn to make your own special kind of whip cream 4. Take your aluminum cans to the recycling center (you will get over $2.00 per pound) 5. Always say good things about people, you will never worry about this getting back to you.

Marie Gallo with her Modesto View Marie Gallo has been part of my church parish for many years. Me, I really didn’t know much about her other then she is a nice lady and always offered everyone at our St. Stanislaus parish a smile and a hand shake. It wasn’t till just a couple of months ago that I learned her last name and that her family enjoys making wine here in the Modesto Area. Besides all that, when I see Marie Gallo after mass, I see a nice, warm and giving person in our community. This was why I eagerly looked forward to getting her Modesto View. MV: Marie, how long have you been a resident of our great city of Modesto? MG: All my life, I was born at Saint Marie’s hospital in downtown Modesto, known later as City Hospital. MV: What high School did you attend? MG: Modesto High School and very proud of it! MV: In High School, did you participate in a sport, band, orchestra or club? MG: I was in the Orchestra and I played the Piano in and loved performing in concertos. MV: In your high school days, what sock hops in Modesto bring back the fondest memories.

MG: Efren, it was more like high school events. I always looked forward to Prom, and in fact I was the Prom and Rally commissioner for my class. I was always very much into school events and music, so I was involved with many musical productions through Mr. Robert Wing. MV: Marie, let’s talk education. After high school did you continue with your education or did you decide to be a stay at home daughter, wife, mother and/or family oriented person as it was more of a tradition at the time? MG: I decided to continue my education at Notre Dame de Namur and later became a teacher. MV. As far as entertainment, I would be very interested to know what your personal preferences are today? Jazz, Big Band, Classical, Swing, Rock & Roll, Hard Rock, Rap, Oldies but Goodies, Motown or all of the above? MG. I enjoy all of the above, but I favor and love Broadway musicals. One of the best shows I ever saw was “South Pacific.” I like rock too and I would have to choose the Beatles. They were in a class by themselves. MV. Let’s talk movies Marie. As time goes by, the movies I enjoy have changed. At one time, I was into scary movies. But now I am more into comedies. Marie, what type of

Marie and Tony Bennett

movies do your prefer to watch these days? MG. Anything that’s a musical. I love Rogers and Hammerstein Efren, I am a movie person. I prefer to laugh so comedies are very big on my selections when it comes to movies. MV: Who is one of your favorite comedians? MG: Adam Sandler I loved the movie “Mr. Deeds.” Also, Steve Martin. Steve is about as classiest act you can get when it comes to comedians.

MV: Marie what are your thoughts of our new city pride here in Modesto, “The Gallo Center” and how exciting has it been for you to see so many great performers come through thus far? MG: First and foremost Efren, Let me say “Modesto deserves this Arts Center”. It was all about timing here, and it was perfect timing for our community to have such a place for the Arts. Again, I think timing is everything, and it was time for Modesto to have a Center for the

Arts. I feel very proud that our city has its own Arts Center. MV: Marie, lets talk wine. It’s a cool fall evening at your home; you’re visiting with family and friends. What color and or year of vintage wine would you prefer to share with them? MG: Anything we make is what we serve. We like to serve various vintage wines, but my husband Bob likes all types of colors, vintages, varietals and other wines from all over the world. But Efren, I would

like to say any wine my daughter Gina makes is my choice to share with family and friends. MV: Marie, you have been a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church for many years and a strong supporter of many charitable events in our community. What are your thoughts on our new parish out on Maze Blvd? MG: It will be another beautiful addition to our community and a testament of how important God is to us. Marie, in my interviews, I always ask a silly question that generally has nothing much to do with anything other than to get our readers to smile. After serious thought, I came up with a question that had to do with your experience on being a well rounded person, mother,

Marie Gallo

aunt, grandmother and sister. Ready? MV. With the presidential elections coming in November, I went ahead and came up with some other candidates that are not on the presidential ballot to choose from. Yes Marie, they are very silly ones at that. Here it is, if you had to choose a Muppet to be the next President for our great Country who would it be? 1.Kermit The Frog 2. Oscar The Grouch 3. Grover The Monster 4. The Cookie Monster 5. Ms. Piggy 6. The Count Now I know this might be a hard choice here, so if you need to call one of your grandchildren to help you out, that’s fine; you can get back

to me on this one this one. MG: Ms. Piggy all the way! And I will tell you why Efren, she’s a woman , she’s smart, she’s funny, and shows/ proves that women can to do anything. MV. Even a Lady Piggy Muppet Marie? MV. Yes Efren, even a LADY Piggy Muppet! MV. Marie, my final question. Could you share a few words of wisdom with our young folks out there looking to start a new career, getting married, starting college or perhaps a fresh family thought? MG. Work hard, Pray often, Follow your dreams with a passion and the most important thing; “NEVER GIVE UP ON YOURSELF”

Her legendary involvement to create a community that was good for her large family and her unstoppable drive to build and develop the arts in Modesto is unparalleled. Most of all, she loves and is very proud of her family and celebrates all of their joys and successes. Today, the Gallo Center for the Arts stands as the new cultural beacon in the Central Valley. The Gallo Winery is the largest winery in the world and revolutionized the culture and the wine business and is a source of community pride and is responsible for hiring many of the young professionals that are helping Modesto become a more cosmopolitan city. It all

Marie will be the recipient of the 2008 Lifetime Modesto Area Music Award for her contributions to the cultural advancement in our city. She will receive the award at the State Theatre on October 16. We asked Marie a few questions we always wanted to know. MV: What is your biggest wish for the cultural future of Modesto? MG: We need to keep arts in the schools. We must continue to make sure that the art community is vibrant and reaches out into our community. Tough times are coming, we must make sure that we continue to support the arts organizations like TOP, Yes Company, Modesto Performing Arts and more. MV: Who would you most like to see perform at the Gallo Center? MG: Harry Connick Jr, Elton John, and Michael Feinstein MV: If you could share a meal with anyone, past or present, who would it be? MG: Mother Theresa, George Gershwin and Rogers and Hammerstein.

Since Marie was young, she has been immersed in the arts. As you young girl, growing up her in Modesto Kimble Street home, the daughter of Judge Frank Damrell, she loved the arts and studied piano, a love that still lives today. Modesto is lucky as Marie is one of those people that chose to come back to Modesto. Born in Modesto at St. Marie hospital, later City Hospital, she wend to Lincoln School and then Modesto High. Her college degree is from Notre Dame de Namur University. After marrying Bob Gallo in 1958 at Our Lady of Fatima, (her parish based on the new geographic dividing lines) she lived in San Francisco and was a music teacher. Marie found that she missed the ability to get involved and really make a difference in her community and realized that she could make a bigger contribution in her hometown of Modesto rather than San Francisco. This was one of Modesto’s luckiest breaks.

connects and our community has connected with our new arts center and Marie Gallo in her own way has connected with all of us.

modestoview magazine

Marie Gallo is one of the most fun people that I know. Always interesting, endlessly energetic, terminally optimistic and beyond persistent. If there is one word that best describes Marie, it must be “Passionate”. Marie is a true Modesto resident, enjoying our local restaurants, a regular to the movie theaters and involved in many local activities and always has a smile and a positive word for everyone. I am proud to have gotten to know her over the years.

Weeks are passing by, I’m thinking of you But you are always here in my heart. And I miss you and wish you were here to stay. Months have already passed without you here on this earth But you are always in my heart and in a better place now. And I am happy you have a better life now. Life was too short for it to end for you But you will always be in my heart and on my mind. And I will always love you, Daddy, but I guess it Was time to say goodbye. October 2008

Randy’s Reel World By Randy Siefkin

I

confess that I did enjoy the quirky Coen Brothers’ film “Burn After Reading,” now playing at the local megaplexes. Too often films like this fail to reach the Modesto market (or have only a brief run), crowded out by big studio productions, and ultimately wind up in my Netflix queue.

October 2008 modestoview magazine 22

That is why we are fortunate to have the State Theatre, the region’s only showcase for independent and foreign films. In the coming weeks local audiences will be able to see “Brideshead Revisited,” a reprise of “Vicky Christina Barcelona,” (see my comments above about abbreviated local runs), the much acclaimed documentary “Man on Wire,” and the French thriller “Tell No One.” Check the State’s web site (www. thestate.org) for more information. Also at the State is the fourth in the series of Midnight Movies, “Pink Floyd The Wall” on Friday and Sunday, October 10 and 12. Last month’s showings of “The Goonies” drew more than 200 fans. In addition, PFLAG’s “MoFest Film Festival” is scheduled for two screenings Saturday October 11 – one at 2:45 and the other at 6:45 p.m. Details on both events can be found at the State’s web site. And you don’t want to miss the State’s Halloween Event on Friday, October 31, featuring the original “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” “Frankenweenie, “Mars Attacks” and other surprises.

On Sunday, October 19, The Modesto Film Society presents Frank Capra’s “Arsenic and Old Lace,” the 1944 screwball comedy featuring Cary Grant, Raymond Massey, Peter Lorre, Priscilla Lane, Josephine Hull and Jean Adair. You’ll find more information about the film and the Society at the State’s web site or at www.modestofilm.org. Short Subjects: Is the independent film industry’s problem quality, quantity or something else? “New York Times” Film Critic A.O. Scott wonders whether “there are too many movies…or too few of us.” His colleague Manohla Dargis characterizes most of today’s independent films as “nice, polite films of the sort you hear about on National Public Radio in between sob stories and pledge drives. Some are indelible works of art. Most are disposable and many look, sound and play out, beat for beat, like Hollywood movies with lower budgets….These are not films that will ever create a new wave; they barely make a ripple, and intentionally so, since each ripple might threaten possible revenue. Better to make audiences smile than make them squirm, better to reassure them than to shake them up, better to stay safe than say, ‘Sorry, Mr. Murdoch.’ ” Do you have an opinion, a comment or question? Email me at rsiefkin@aol.com, or call 521-8772.

General Manager of the State Theatre

At the State By Sue Richardson

Fall concerts plus The State’s first Halloween Party & Monster Film Mash What's old is new again at The State

O

ur assignment was to report on what’s happening for Fall. Easy enough because there’s a lot going on at The State. And I’ll get to all of that but first, I must digress. The State is the only theater in the region showing first-run art, indie and foreign films. It’s also the only theater in the area where you can sit in the auditorium and enjoy a glass of wine or a beer, but that’s another topic altogether. The digression at hand is the type of films we show here. They’re not boffo blockbusters or shoot-‘em-ups. They are, instead, award-winning and critically acclaimed films, some of which have wound up being huge box office hits. One such film was “Pan’s Labyrinth.” Others are smaller and some are just plain sleepers such as the recent coming-ofage film “The Wackness,” starring Ben Kingsley and newcomer Josh Peck. Box office was terrible. The film was great. Not sure why the disconnect, but I urge you to give these films a chance – especially if you want to see provocative films that sometimes enlighten, almost always challenge your perspective and occasionally change the way you see the world. And now, back to Fall. We’re in the process of booking several artists so check our web site regularly for details, as they unfold. Confirmed bookings include popular guitarist and smooth jazz artist Craig Chaquico for Friday, Oct. 24 and singer-songwriter Matt Nathanson for Thursday, Oct. 30. Nathanson, one of the headliner’s in B-93’s Acoustic Christmas last year, is getting a lot of air play these days so we’re expecting a sell-out. General admission tickets are $16. Looking for an adult Halloween party where you can get in touch with your inner zombie? Where it’s OK to dance the Transylvania Twist and sing along to Monster Mash? And where sci-fi films don’t include chainsaws and serrated

cutlery? Then be sure and get your tickets now to The State’s Halloween Party & Monster Film Mash, Friday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. There will be plenty of spooks, spirits, wine and beer, along with a costume

contest for prizes, an organ concert and three flicks, including a Tim Burton 2-fer – the black comedy “Mars Attacks” and the short “Frankenweenie” – and the 1956 feature-length “Invasion of The Body Snatchers,” considered by many to be one of the best horror films of all time! General admission tickets are $15 in advance or $18 at the door the night of the Film Mash. In November, we have long-standing favorite Tommy Castro booked for the 12th. His shows rock and it’s no wonder why he’s got such a huge following. There's a lot of dancing in the aisles when Tommy Castro comes to The State. We’re also working on booking Joe Ely, Edgar Winter and Joe Otto. Check our web site for information (www.thestate.org). I would be remiss if I didn’t mention fall films. First there’s our own film fare, which includes a repeat engagement of the Woody Allen film “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” starting Oct. 10, and the much-anticipated “Man On Wire,” opening Friday, Oct. 17. Check out Randy Siefkin’s column for more on this and other fall films or, watch the trailer by going to The State’s web site or our myspace page at www.myspace/statetheatremodesto. We are also trying to book “Choke,” the soon-to-be released film based Chuck Palahniuk’s 2001 novel of the same name.

A Hallows Eve & What To Be

By Efren J

W

ell, looks like Halloween is upon us again. Charlie Brown and the parties will start even earlier this year. Last Halloween, I went to 6 Hallows Eve Parties. My biggest dilemma; what to be for each Halloween Party I went to. I didn’t want to be the same old thing and just using the costume I used at the last party just didn’t work for me. Last Halloween, I was a High Roller, Superman, Andy from Raggedy Ann & Randy, Death Walking, A Whoopee Cushions, A Monk and my favorite, A Banana. So on that note, I’m thinking I would consider myself to be an expert on picking out a good costume for a Halloween Party. Now the Whoopee Cushion was some great fun, but getting squeezed all night long at the party kind of made it uncomfortable and a bit smelly. My advice, if you’re going to be a Whoopee Cushion, equip yourself with your own whoopee cushion inside your costume. It makes for a better/sillier time at the party and your social conversations will consist of more than just 2 words. “Hello, & Good Bye!” “Pew” Now being a Banana, that was the best costume for me of choice last year. A Banana can be fruity fun, it’s easy to dance around in, and everyone loves Bananas. Some might say that the Banana fits me best. Hmm.. FYI Modesto View Readers! Here’s a warning if you decide to go with this ever so cool piece of fruit, being a Banana can be dangerous! Why? At my last Halloween Kid Party; I noticed a Gorilla there. He quickly spotted me and before I could even say, “Trick or Treat” I found myself running for my life from this huge Gorilla. Comical, you bet! But still, very dangerous. That is if you’re a banana and there are Monkeys and Gorillas near by. Oh My Gosh! This year for Halloween I think I might be a puppy. Heck why not, everyone loves puppies and in fact, some of my best friends are dogs. Just call me puppy love baby.

Here are some of the new costumes out this year: Speed Racer™: Trixie Deluxe Adult Costume , Captain America, Pizza Pie , Adult Optimus Prime “Transformers Character” , Couples Costume - Bacon & Eggs. My Prediction for the most Popular Halloween Costumes is Batman™ The Dark Knight Adult Costume, Also available, The Joker™ /Batman also available in kid sizes. For you older kids, Beer Bottle Adult Costume “Everybody will love you!” Get 5 other Beer costumes together and you will have a six-pack.

Regardless friends, whatever you decide to play the part of at your next Harvest Festival, Halloween Party/Dance. Make sure you have fun with it and please; if you celebrate with spirits, make sure you have one that’s not drinking them. Have a Designated Driver. Happy Hallows Eve Everyone: For More Information on costumes, visit the the good people at Daydreams and Nightmares and shop Modesto! Halloween in Modesto

T

his is a trick or treat dream. Halloween is on a Friday this year. The kids are ecstatic, the parents are jazzed as there will be a whole weekend for Halloween parties and you can actually enjoy the Halloween season, one of our favorite all year long. Most importantly, be safe. If you are at a Halloween party and you have a bit too much, call a cab (see page 4 for local transportation info) If you are in the neighborhoods, please drive slow. If you have a van of kids and you are working the candy friendly neighborhoods, do not let the kids out in the street and kids, be careful and wear reflective clothing. Here are a couple of really fun things to do this season.

Scary…. By far the scariest thing in Modesto is the haunted house/fright factory located in the parking lot of Vintage Faire. This is not for the faint of heart or for little kids. You won’t be disappointed as

these folks go over the top. www.itsscary. com There is scary and very scary. Be prepared. Look for this next to Johnny Carino’s right next to Sisk Road.

Funworks Pumpkin Maze This is fun for a date, groups of friends, post cocktail reverie or even for the geotrackingmap-reading-stamp-collecting expert with a stopwatch. It is more fun after dark with flashlights. Funworks is on the corner of Coffee and Claratina

IN 3-D! Riverbank Haunted House The Rio Arts and Joey Heustis take the Haunted house to the next level. With 3-D effects (glasses provided) you will be blown away by the scary talent at the Riverbank High School Black Box theatre. There will be areas for scary and not-so-scary. Kids under 10 are only $1 with an adult.

very one needs a little Modesto history. Your kids need to know the McHenry family history and learn more about the creation and the evolution of Modesto. On Saturday, October 4, 2008, the McHenry Mansion in downtown Modesto will host a Jubilee celebration, commemorating the 125th anniversary of the mansion, built in 1883. The entrance will open at 5 pm for guests to check in and the opening ceremonies begin at 5:30pm. At this Jubilee celebration the McHenry Family, the Julio Gallo Foundation and all that have participated in the restoration or have worked at the mansion will be honored. After the short ceremony the grounds of the mansion will come alive with 1880’s period entertainment as Mrs. McHenry entertains her guests. The entertainment will include Gottschalk’s Music Store’s Sousa Band playing period music throughout the celebration. Additionally, from 8 to 9 pm Ernie Bucio’s Orchestra will be playing music for dancing. Vaudeville actors will perform on the side-yard stage. Actors will be mingling

hroughout the crowd acting as if they were living in the 1880s. There will be a fortune teller and a snake oil salesman working the crowd. The 2nd floor balcony will be the stage of a damsel in distress. Champagne and wine (provided by E&J Gallo) and light hors d’oeuvres will await the guests as they arrive for the toasting of the honored guests by Mrs. McHenry’s servants. During the week prior to the event the mansion will be lit up with colorful lights to draw attention to the beautiful mansion. The cost is $35 per adult and tickets must be purchased in advance. To purchase tickets or for more information, please call (209) 577-5235 If you miss this event, have no fear, the McHenry Mansion is open daily for your touring and educational pleasure and later in the year, it will be decorated for the Christmas Holidays. We wish they would to the McHenry Mansion for Halloween like we did on the cover of this issue.

Artists & labels like Doja Click, Darkroom, MONSTER BOOGIE Fat Cat Music House and Lounge Moonshine, Twap Nina and so on have been reapin the valley hard. at DEVA, often with Off the Air, and opened up an opportunity to work with the Blue Monday crew at Clayton’s to do a once a month Thursday show with Art, since many of us were down drawing the bands. The art walk itself is a multi arts experience, each venue different, and this month’s DEVA presentation with reception for Glenn Hutsell, featured through October, included the 11 piece Ukelele Band. One of our artists who displayed his wire sculpture, Big Earl Mathews of Big Earl and the Crying Shame, illustrative of the nexus of art and music in our area. October 3, ModestoArtX and the Peer to Peer Recovery Art project, will host with the Behavior Health and Recovery Services advocates office, their second Fall Art and Music event, at 800 Scenic Drive, Modesto. Various community and program artists will be featured, with live music guests on the Behavioral Health campus, open to the public to view local artists and musicians team up in an effort toward an anti stigma campaign for community inclusion and greater education in mental wellness and recovery. 11 am to 2 pm. www.myspace.com/modestoartx Rock N Roll is featured theme by guest photographer show by Al Golub, at Photographers Gallery, a career’s worth of shots to be seen. The Photographers Gallery has been presenting a great group of shows this year, and also offering classes. www. modestophotographersgallery.com October classes with photographers this month beginning at 6:00 Let there be Light (room) Oct 8 and 15 Al Golub, instructor Strike a Pose/Portrait Photography – Oct 22 – Rebecca Harvey, instructor Photographers Journey – Oct 29 –Edward Mendes, Instructor Regular art classes take place at a number of locations around town, including the community classes, and regular class schedule at MJC, where a number of arts students have notified me they are working on projects worthy of Third Thursday. Karen Cox will be doing printmaking workshops once a month at the Chartreuse Muse, on first Saturday I believe, through December. Same location includes the Tuesday Night life drawing sessions for only ten dollars, and one Thursday a month, portrait night headed up by Jack Morris who requested a plug for one I often draw or paint at. Found Judith Cochrane there this month, as I tried to recruit her for Clayton’s art walk, only to find a lot of her work over at Crow Trading, a good place to drop in on. Life group friend Penny Meyer is back from miniature show in Spain, and has an acrylic workshop at the Muse, and more classes listed on the web site. www. TheChartreuseMuse.com The Chartreuse Muse will also be host for the Beauty for Ashes fine art auction to “benefit women overcoming poverty in the third world.” A project of LifeWind International. www.lifewind.org This is a fine art auction to help women become empowered through LifeWind’s Aid with Equal Dignity , where you will find new works of art from Seattle, New York, the Bay Area, Central valley and Modesto. Auction dates are “silent auction” October 22-25, 10 am to 5 pm, with Preview with the artists October 24, 3 to 7 p.m., and live auction reception with the artists, October 25, 8 p.m. All events at the Chartreuse Muse, 910 Tenth Street, Modesto. Call 209-5240600, ext 215 for more information. Back to school art supplies rush has been evident at Artel Art Center at McHenry village, and a full slate of classes in acrylics and oils noted on the board. Artel is also a place I drop of posters for art events, the State Theatre, so check the bulletin board for business cards, art events and classes near the front counter and front door. DEVA is also good for this up by the coffee bar. www.artelartcenter. com Don’t forget, vote for music at www.modestoareamusic.com for the MAMA awards, and if you aren’t there for the awards show, pick up your maps for Third Thursday and check out new art displays at Anderson Gallery and Frame Shop, Trewin Framery, Etouffee, Mistlin Gallery, Picasso’s, DEVA, and the rest of the will be open for Art Walk venues, October 16.
