HAPPY ROCKTOBER MODESTO!

HappyRocktober Modesto! The air is cooler, the breezes are breezier and there is just an increased energy when we get into the fall season. I love Modesto in October for this and so many other reasons. First of which, since 2000, the Modesto Area Music Awards are happening on October 13. It is crazy that it has been 12 years since Chris Ricci and I sat on the patio of Harvest Moon and wondered how we could help celebrate the amazing musical talent and supportive music scene we have here in Modesto. 12 Years later the annual black tie event is going strong, now with over 200 nominees in 19 categories! I love it. I love listening to the bands, the songs and seeing them live. Music is part of what makes a good community great. We have to keep it alive and strong.

The fall harvest feeling is really amazing here. Our small town feel, our rock and roll and our rich agricultural offerings are key our brand of Modesto USA- A Classic American City. American Graffiti heritage, feeding the world, great music and a small town feeling of great people in our community? Yes indeed, this is Classic, it is real, it is authentic and it is us. Awesome to have the Modesto Chamber of Commerce embrace this brand too. Don’t you love it?

So as we bust in to the fall harvest, when the moon is giant in the sky, the shadows get longer and the tastes and smells get more incredible. With Butternut squash soups and raviolis, pumpkin treats, fall flavors, the new Downtown Modesto Harvest Festival and the fall produce in our farmer’s markets, we all have something to like.

Add to this some big slappin’ bass, some classic cars, some flames and some good ole Retro-Americana style and we have a big thumpin, toe tappin’, and exciting and energetic fall season. Modesto is loving the new Rockbilly category in the MAMA Awards and this is the perfect kind of music for Modesto that brings our past and future together. So enjoy this ModestoView Magazine, experience our wonderful events and jump, jive and wail headfirst into our community. You will love it and you will feel Classic from head to toe, complete with flames and chrome tailpipes. Happy Rocktober Modesto.

Greetings Modesto Fans, This is the fun time of year. We are in the fall fundraiser season and we are all running around like crazy. We have been having fun with the ModestoView Magazine and hope that you have been too. We like interviewing people you may not know, showcasing the little things that make Modesto interesting and trying to encourage people to do new things each month. With the MAMAs and Halloween and Harvest events coming up, it is a colorful and interesting time of the year. Our family loves Halloween and all the events that come with it.

Robbie Fonseca’s “A Haunting 25th Anniversary” Exhibition October 28th & 29th – West Side Theatre Local artist Robbie Fonseca presents his mannequin art exhibition that has been on tour in the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica, Arm & Hammer Museum, LA Art Gallery, The Venice Art Gallery, and the LA Art Association Gallery.

The exhibition will feature two new works. I hadn’t heard about Buddy’s until recently when a friend of mine told me about a bar with a great tap selection and a lax rule on throwing peanut shells on the ground. My initial thought was: in Modesto? I haven’t heard of such a place.

I’m a bit on the arrogant side in which I assume I know every bar within Modesto limits, so a new place called Buddy’s was news to me. However, lo and behold, ModestoView readers, Roseburg Square had been hiding a gem of a bar that truly lives up to its name.

Buddy’s is not only delivering an excellent bar and restaurant combo punch, it’s also a place which is totally geared toward making patrons feel as though they are a buddy of Buddy’s.

You may be unaware, but Buddy’s offers something really fantastic called the ‘Buddy Locker.’

This ingenious system is aimed at the shot-taking crowd (which yours truly has ceased to be a member of since that throwingup-on-the-dance-floor-becauseof-tequila night…which we shall never speak of), which if you are a member of, should considering taking full advantage of. Here’s how the Buddy Locker works: you purchase a bottle of your favorite poison at retail price at Buddy’s who will then store your bottle in one of its behindthe-bar lockers. Your bottle will be eagerly awaiting your return and you can then pour out shots at your convenience at $1 a go.

This is an excellent set-up for birthdays, impending heartbreak, and frequent customers.

Speaking of frequent customers, Buddy’s has yet another ingenious system called…wait for it…the Buddy System. This

system is specifically geared toward regular patrons/buddies.

Here’s how it works: you are issued a card with which you are able to accumulate points, and these points accumulate perks, and who doesn’t love perks?

Perks include happy hour prices at any given time, or having your name engraved on any number of the wall-mounted tankards ready for your disposal any time you’re at Buddy’s. I’d say you’d have to be a pretty mean and miserable person not to get a tad excited about either one of Buddy’s systems. And if you are that mean and miserable, do us all a favor and don’t come to Buddy’s; you’ll ruin the fun vibe.

How would Jacquie sum up Buddy’s? It’s about family, creating fun moments, and finding new buddies, three things that I believe would be easy to access given the great vibe Buddy’s projects. Come for the pulled pork sandwiches and fantastic bar, come back for the awesome vibe, great staff, and lax rules on peanut-shell throwing.

Here’s what you need: -1/2 oz. Jack Daniels Honey Whiskey -4 oz. Lemonade -4 oz. Ice Tea -1 oz. Tuaca Here’s what you do: -Throw all the ingredients in a shaker. Well, don’t actually throw them in. You know what I mean.

Modesto’s Oldest Restaurant, 87 Years Later Still Cooking Strong!

Restaurants come and go, but with 87 years in business The Old Mill Café has more than withstood the test of time. It is as solid as Modesto’s Arch at age 99! Since 1924 The Old Mill Café has been cooking up breakfast and lunch favorites through the depression, floods, trains, and even relocating due to eminent domain in 1990.

Chef Joe also has his specialty south of the border chili verde omelet made from scratch like everything on the menu! If you are anything like me you will also be torn between the NY strip and the T-bone steak to go with your eggs! Old Mill Recipe Biscuits

2 Cups of flour 1 teaspoon Sugar 1 tablespoon Baking Powder 1 Teaspoon Salt 8 Tablespoons Butter 3/4 Cup Milk In a large bowl combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt together.

Cut butter into mixture until it begins to hook like corn meal.

The roll out dough and cut into medium biscuits.

Bake 12 min. or until brown.

Country Gravy

Start with 3 pounds of Sasuage About 1 cup of Shorting 2 table spoons of Black Pepper Pinch of Salt 4 cups of Flour 1 gallon Milk Cook sausage well then add your flour to make a rue.

Cook until flour starts to turn brown.

Then add milk and cook over medium heat to thicken.

by Abbey Murphy I love this time of year. I love it when it gets cold and starts to rain. I am a fall girl. It is still fun water polo season and the homework is really hard but there is so much fun to think about. Fall food is so good too. The oatmeal, the chocolate chip cookies and soup.

It is Halloween time and it is always good to find the awesome costume. Thrift shops are the place to start and I hit the Hope Chest on McHenry. There are cool jackets, dresses, vintage shoes and a ton of costume jewelry. You should be able to get the whole thing for less than $20! You still need to go to the Halloween stores to get the blood, the fangs, the wigs, and the extras.

If you are looking for the real costume, you need to check out Daydreams and Nightmares over on Carpenter Rd. You can rent the amazing professional costumer there. Peace Essay

In September we had the Social Justice Conference and one of our key subjects was bullying. This is something that has to stop and we have to treat each other with respect. We have to realize that we are all different and we all home something positive to offer. I would encourage my fellow students to be a part of the 25th Peace Essay contest this year. DJ Chopstiqs- Since I won last year, the DJ section for the MAMA’s is still the same. What I see a lot of are DJ’s that are coming up and some are still intheir bedrooms practicing and hopefully show this town what kind of DJ Community we have. Everyone can be a headliner, you just have to work more than you want to.

TL- At which moment in your life did you begin your path on the ones and twos?(DJ-ing) DJ Chopstiqs- I started DJing at the age of 10. But I’ve always had the passion for collecting VINYL Albums, 12inch, 7inch even 78’s(78rpm) TL- To give the fans a dose of your new work. what recent projects are you inclined with?

DJ Chopstiqs- I am working on a Mixtape project as we speak. It is titled “Life in a Mason Jar” and will be out in October of this year.

It is not your average mixtape.

It involves a whole lot of influences including country and rock mashed and meshed with hip hop beats. Stay tuned.

In addition Clone was last years Best Urban, surprising even himself with the win. Clone was not available for comment. This go around is full of new and already established artists. There is so much talent in the 209. We will see who takes the crown.

The MAMA’s Are Coming!

The 2011 Modesto Area Music Awards will take over Modesto on October 13!

This year, the MAMAs go retro lounge as we move our event to the Doubletree Grand Ballroom and Lobby. Over 10 live performances, 17 awards including 2 new categories this year, Rockabilly and Rockshow Promoter with a special most requested return of Poetry Master and serious MJC Professor Sam Pierstorff. (See Interview on Page 12) In 2000, crammed into Club Maxx at the Doubletree, the MAMAs became a showcase for the best local talent in all kinds of music from metal, to acoustic, jazz to blues and hip hop to House DJ. Amazing performances over the years have come from Good Luck Thrift Store, Flying Blind, UVR, Megan Slankard, DAM, Moonshine Bandits, Devante, Puffin Billies and so many more. More incredible performances and surprises are sure to happen this year.

The 2011 MAMAs will honor and recognize the amazing Ernie Bucio with an Annual Ernie Bucio Music Scholarship to support music in our schools and community.

Our entire community works together to make the MAMAs happen and thanks in advance to all the people that donate their time and facilities to make the MAMA Awards one of the best nights of the year. What things inspire you the most?

Words are so very powerful. They can hurt, they can heal, they can demean and they can elevate.

I am in awe of people that can pull the depths of emotion up with simple words and phrases. I can easily get lost in the literary imagery of what I read, but sadly I have a short attention span and so things I love the most are works like Old Man and the Sea by Hemmingway, shorts stories, run-on stuff like Kerouac, and satirical and surgical Hunter Thompson and Poetry. I cried when the Memorial Hospital Tour opened because of the powerful words of local teacher and poet Sam Pierstorff. His words are magical and this year he takes the helm of the 12th Annual MAMA Awards where his words meet music and celebrate the rhythm of Modesto in many ways. Let’s meet Sam.

How did Sam Pierstorff come to be?

I was born in 1975 to a Syrian/Muslim mother and an American/ military father from Kentucky.

Let’s face it: their divorce was imminent. I spent the next few years of my life living with one older brother, a tough-asnails mother, and a parakeet named Tiki in Orange County, California. After moving to five homes in four cities over the next ten years, Ifinally went off to college in Long Beach where my life really began. I got hooked on a drug called “poetry” and spent the next few years studying, reading, writing, and falling in love with language. Eventually, I received my Master of Fine Arts degree, moved to Modesto to begin teaching at Modesto Junior College, and soon was honored as the city’s Poet Laureate, which made me the youngest ever appointed in the state.

Though no longer the city’s official poet, I still host SLaM on RyE,Modesto’s monthly poetry slam; The ILL List, which I coorganize with Greg Edwards; and I run a small press, Quercus Review Press, through the college’s English department where we have recently embarked on our most ambitious poetry project to date: More Than Soil, MoreThan Sky: The Modesto Poets, a 252page anthology that includes 51 Modesto poets and portraits of each by Doug Holcomb. It an amazing book that will be released on October 22nd (Amazon.com).

What is your favorite word?

If I actually did have a favorite word, I would probably have stopped writing years ago. I would just say that word over and over. For me, I think it’s the combination of words that makes them sing, and finding those playful combinations is the fun of writing, like “coal” and “train,” for example. Pretty bland words in isolation, but listen to what Michael Stillman does in his poem, “In Memoriam John Coltrane.” He writes, “listen to / these cars carry coal, listen / to the coal train roll.”

Now we’re groovin’. Hear the alliteration of those consonant C sounds like the crunch of box cars connecting on the tracks, and of course, the play on “coal train” and “Coltrane.” Love it. It’s not the individual words that matter. It’s how we use them that makes all the difference.

What literature inspired you as a kid?

I didn’t read much as a kid. Ironic, I know. Other than some Encyclopedia Brown books, it wasn’t until college when I discovered Charles Bukowski that I began to learn about “voice,” and more importantly, that I had one too. Prior to that, as a kid, I was always outside skateboarding. Books were what I used to stiffen a wobbly launch ramp.

What if I told you I didn’t believe in inspiration? I think at best this concept is a myth for writers; at worst it’s an excuse that writers use to not write. I believe in perspiration, however. Whether you’re an artist, musician, or poet — the good ones do the work every day or damn near, and some days are better than others, but if we wait for inspiration to strike, we are waiting way too long between poems. If you’re asking me what topics I choose to write about, then that’s easier: family, kids, teachers, students, hookers, the girls with the missing door on her 1984 Toyota Corolla (working on that poem now).

I write what I see, so I am always watching with eyes wide open. There is so much out there worth elevating to a poem, but people miss the good stuffbecause they’re looking at the obvious: sunsets, waterfalls, almond blossoms. Not me. Those things are already beautiful and don’t need a poem to capture their beauty. I like the gum wads on the sidewalk, or the baby with an eye patch, or that large red-headed girl driving down Briggsmore with no car door. Doesn’t she deserve a poem more?

When did you realize that you had and felt the rhythm of language?

When I was in high school, my senior-year English teacher asked me to read a short poem out loud about my parent’s divorce— something about hiding under their bed before it wasn’t their bed anymore. Halfway through, I broke down in class, sobbing, completely ambushed by my own poem (as poet LillianVallee would say). My teacher knelt down and whispered, “You’re a writer, Sam.” She didn’t try to console me. I had shared something real and powerful and it helped me as much as it helped others in the class, and that’s when I knew I had to keep writing—to help myself and to help others. Not sure if there was rhythm in that early poem, but my heart was certainly beating like a heavy metal drum solo, and I needed to write things down to steady the pace of myheart before it burst.

What is it about teaching that you love so much?

I like staying as young as possible. Students are good for that. They introduce me to new language and music and trends that I don’t normally subscribe to (and still wouldn’t, but it’s nice to be in the loop). And of course, there’s always the student whose life path changes before your very eyes. He comes to community college after a stint in Iraq or in prison (true story) and heads off two years later to Berkeley to pursue a degree in English because my poetry or English 101 class inspired him. When that light bulb goes on in a student’s mind and you know you had a small hand in shaping the life of a fellow human being, that’s as good as it gets for anyone.

What do you think the effect of Texting and Twitter has had on modern conversation?

I think brevity is essential in poetry, so I am all for short, precise communication, but texting has become such a problem in classes. Students can’t disconnect. It’s an addiction. Young people today (and I know that phrase makes me sound like your grandpa) can’t live in the moment, can’t be at peace without the intrusion of the outside world. Everything becomes so urgent because their iPhone is vibrating. There’s no peace, no patience. And with essay writing, there’s no development, no thoughtful, sustained argumentation. Texting and Twitter have created a world where depth and detail become irrelevant or rarely required. Most of what people know these days comes from bumper stickers and headlines. No one bothers to get the full story anymore.

How do you like Modesto?

Modesto is slowly becoming awesome. You may be walking down-

town, take a few wrong turns, and awesome may be the last thing on your mind, but you can also spend Friday night eating pizza at Concetta’s, and then have drinks at Tresetti’s with dear friends, and end up dancing at the Tiki, because why the hell not? Or you might pop over to an Off The Air show or a poetry slam or an open mic at the Queen Bean. You can do all that and love this town. Or you can skip it and complain about how much we suck. But here’s my theory: if your life sucks in Modesto, it will suck everywhere you go—because the fact is, you probably suck. A city doesn’t make a man cool. A man brings cool to the city. I try to bring cool things here (i.e. poetry slams) and so does Greg Edwards (i.e. Off The Air) and Chris Ricci (i.e. X-Fest) and Chris Murphy (i.e. MAMAs!) and so do many, many others. So Modesto is great. It really is. But a person has to believe that first. Then the city will reveal itself to him or her—one cool new thing at a time.

You wrote an amazing poem for the opening of Memorial Hospital. How do you take something like a hospital opening and make it so personal?

I write poems one line at a time. I never pre-plan them. I just write a first line that leads to a second, and a third and so on. The poem naturally takes its turns, and Ifollow where the poem wants to go. It sounds silly, but that’s the truth.

So as I recall writing that hospital poem, I remembered those big cranes that built the North Tower and my toddler’s reaction to them every time we drovepast. And that’s where I began the poem, and the rest just wrote itself. I know that poem is on a plaque inside the hospital somewhere because people tell me they’ve seen it, but I haven’t been sick enough to be admitted long enough to see it myself. I think I am gonna wait to reread that poem.

Your book, Growing Up In Someone Else’s Shoes, was amazing? Were there any stories that meant the most to you?

The title poem, “Growing Up In Someone Else’s Shoes,” may mean the most to me. It was a poem derived from a picture of me and my brother in thrift store clothes under a tree. We looked very dorky. I was stiff with anger and my brother was all smiles. It was a sad photo actually because I knew how angry I was as a kid growing up poor in a broken home, but my mom tried always to make us feel special. God bless her. I literally grew up in someone else’s shoes, and I still feel like that insecure kid sometimes. Second to that short poem, I have a few pieces about my own children. When you’re a dad, your kids mean everything to you, so any poems about my sons or daughter mean a great deal to me.

When did you first get involved with Poetry Slam?

I used to slam in Huntington Beach and Long Beach while in college (late 90s). I never tried to make a team or tour nationally. I just signed up for every slam open mic in the area.

It was a blast. And it was always a great place to take a first date. So I did that for a while, and then when I came to Modesto, I wanted to bring that poetic energy with me, so I started the monthly slams at the Prospect Theater. We’ve been there with a full house on the 3rd Wednesday of every month for ten years now!

The Ill List is one of the most respected Poetry Slams in the USA. What makes it so special?

There is no underestimating the power and energy and enthusiasm of our great Modesto audience. They cheer so loud that poets all over the country can hear them. Poets call, and email, and message me all the time for a chance to compete here. We offer a healthy prize: $1500, and Greg Edwards and I go the extra mile

in terms of hospitality, hotel, food, etc. We always keep the line-up fresh, highly prestigious, and very competitive. And of course, seeing Greg in a bra and mini-skirt may have something to do with our glowing national reputation.

What do you think about Modesto’s place in the history of American Graffiti?

I wish, like a lot of Modestans, that good ‘ol George Lucas would come through and publicly anoint this town with his light saber so the whole world knew the story of American Graffiti, but alas, that may never happen. So we definitely have to keep up with our amazing car shows and Graffiti summers to relive the lore of the 50s. I am happy to see the effort being made to establish Modesto’s American Graffiti history. I am all for it. I do, however, get insanely jealous when I see all the beautiful classic cars come through in the summer while my ‘71 Chevy rots in my driveway. Someone please restore my truck!

Do you think that retro and the modern world can co-exist?

Totally. That’s the perfect blend these days in fashion, in entertainment, in life. Vintage is chic. my 9-year-old kid loves watching Star Wars at the very retro State Theater. Both the movie and the theater are way older than he is, but great things never die. That’s retro. It keeps coming back because it’s so damn cool.

Describe your perfect Modesto day.

That day is coming on October 22nd, 2011. It’s the day when the Modesto Poets anthology comes out on Amazon. It will be the day that everyone buys the book online and our sales rank climbs to #1 and the NY Times Book Review calls for an interview, and our town’s national reputation surges out of the dungeon of murder, meth, and auto theft, and into the light of literature.

If you had unlimited funds, what event or thing would you do to make Modesto an even more creative place?

I think Modesto needs a literary/book festival: A weekend of major authors from all genres doing readings, workshops, lectures. We have had a few great authors come through the college, one by one (i.e.

Kay Ryan, David Sedaris, Frank Rich, Maya Angelou, et al.) But what if we had all of them at once for a whole weekend and we could workshop with them, listen to their stories, and draw inspiration from some of the country’s most renowned writers? We could start quite a revolution here . . . with the pen, not the sword.

The most important question of all…Beatles or Stones… Why?

What’s New with Jazz and Blues? by Eric Benson We have lost three of our great local musicians in the last couple of years, Jazz trumpeter Deck Hogin, master guitarist Carl Robinson and now Ernie Bucio.

Ernie Bucio, Jazz and classical musician, bandleader and music educator, passed from a massive stroke in August. The outpouring of a standing room only musical memorial at MJC Auditorium on September 10th, 2011 showed the impact of what one man’s life can have on a community.

It was inspiring to see the people whose lives he affected with his music, work ethic and tireless love of his craft. Hopefully he is transitioning into his “nest big gig” upstairs next to Gabriel and his golden horn holding down second chair. Our condolences go out to the family, and Ernie my man you will be missed. Long time band mate and tenor man Marti Martinez will do a piece on Ernie for Modesto View next month.

On with the business at hand, the State Theatre continues to bring in some quality shows featuring a Flying Blind Reunion street party on Saturday October 1st.

The State will have food and bar, and VIP lounge area, doors open 6:00 p.m.This will be a homecoming for one of the hottest working bands Modesto has known. If dining before the show, Vito’s Italian Ristorante offers a discount for those attending the State shows.

This month Metal in the MAMA’s & The CVDM

A few things to talk about this month. First of all I would like to announce that after 11 years of supporting metal in our area me my company 209Productions have been nominated for a MAMA award!! I have been nominated for best rock promoter and I would really appreciate it if my readers would vote for me at www.modestoareamusic.com.

Speaking of The MAMA Awards. We have our own METAL category! The powers that be in MAMA award land have chosen to grace local metal bands with their own category. After years of mixing rock and metal in one category we finally have our own category and it’s a giant step for local METAL!!!

Finally what I really wanted to talk about this month! Being October I wanted to pay attention to the more extreme side of local metal. There is one dedicated group of loyal Death Metal fans that dedicate themselves to Extreme Metal.

CVDM (Central Valley Death Metal) was formed over that last few several years and was formed out of the fact that they were not happy with other Death Metal Clubs from other states and wanted one of their own to represent Death Metal in our area. When asked about it Bryan Flanagan of the club said “we weren’t happy with death metal clubs in our area claiming the east coast instead of representing where they’re from. It’s disrespectful and those clubs only do it to kiss ass. We could care less about the east coast”. With members in the cream of the crop of local Death Metal bands like The legendary Grind/ Deathband The Meat S**ts (One of Modesto’s 1st metal bands and one of the 1st bands ever to use samples in their music) also represented are Decomposition, Forever Obscured, Aborticide, Decapitated Midget Fetus, Death Metal is one type of metal that is not entirely accepted is our area but these guys have held court in Ceres at The Workshop for years and I don’t see them going anywhere soon! Many would argue that it was right here in Modesto, CA in the mid to late thirties. After being unsuccessful with sharecropping during the early Depression, the Maddux family hitch-hiked from Boaz, Alabama to California to get in to the music business in 1933. The band members consisted of (Fred, Cal, Cliff and Don) and one sister, Rose. After settling in Modesto, and honing their musical talents, they first performed on the radio in 1939. The Maddux Brothers and Rose very quickly became California’s best hillbilly band. In those days, the band was considered hillbilly, not country. “There was no rock n’ roll in those early days, before 1955. Only country-boogie. My brothers also played that way. We called it country then,” said Rose Maddux. They were the beginning sounds of rock with a hillbilly background, mixed with an authentic sound and risqué lyrics. Fred Maddux played the upright bass. The trademark “slap bass” technique was used by him as early as 1937.

Rose Maddux was known for her very signature style of singing.

“Nowadays, all the girl singers sound alike. I sounded like nobody else, and I guess that’s why I was so distinctive,” said Rose.

By 1951, the band had recorded for Four Star and Columbia Records. From 1953-1955, the band was playing packed places every weeknight while on tour across the country. They played shows with Elvis Presley and became part of a movement in musical history that has influenced many of today’s famous as well as local musicians. By 1955, the rockabilly scene was in full bloom and the Maddox Brothers and Rose had already been paving the way for nearly 20 years right here in Modesto.

Thanks to their musical influence, mixed with the western swing, boogie woogie, and rhythm and blues style of the 50’s and 60’s, today we enjoy bands that still sing true to that era. For example, Stray Cats, Reverend Horton Heat and local bands like The Refuzniks and The Pendeltons.

By the time Modesto View comes out, you only have a couple days to view the Modesto Art Museum World Mini-Print Show at McHenry Museum. The World Mini Print show caps a busy September for MAM, with the photo installation “Meet Your Neighbors” by Jessica Gomula and the combined events of the Modesto International Architectural Festival. The Mini Print Show opened September 20, and plays out October 2. While international in scope, Andrew Cain noted to me that few of our many printmakers in area entered. I hope to have seen this show a few times by the time this column comes out and enter next year as well as encourage others to enter.

Weight Loss & Shaved Legs?

When you look at Brian, it’s more than noticeable how much weight he’s lost recently and it only makes his handsome shaved head more attractive, but his legs too? More on that here after a bit; I met Brian 2 years ago at Fun Sport Bikes in Modesto when I was looking for a new road bike, he knows bikes and he dialed me in with a perfect bike for my Triathlons. With just a few recent modifications, I’ve increased my speed quite a bit from my earlier days when I first started riding with him. Back then he was weighing in at 204lbs and yet, he was still very fast on a road bike. In fact, I struggled to pass him on the road. For the longest time, I studied his form, his bike, as well as his pace on how he was always able to tackle a hill and always come out on top first. I was totally intrigued and I couldn’t figure out how such a heavy man could be so fast on a bike, especially uphill. Well, just recently I paid him a visit and much to my surprise he was thinner, like 35lbs thinner! WOW! He looked great including all of his handsome self and his shaved head too. I asked him, how did you do it? His reply, “Efren, it was as easy as riding a bike”. OK sure, but after having my own experience with weight loss weighing in at over 300lbs not too long ago, I just knew that there had to be more to it than just riding his bike.

Just the same, I knew that there would be no keeping up with him now. He was fast before, now he’s screaming fast and recently he started racing. In fact he just completed his first bike race and did very well. Out of 40 racers, he placed 16th. Not bad for his first race. Still, the fact that he is and always has been so fast on a bike amazed me. As time went by, I stared to study his persona. What makes this guy strong, what makes this guy go, what makes this guy fast? Well if you know Brian, you know that he’s a great guy and in a ride he will make sure you’re OK if you break down before he goes on. Still, after much thought on this, it came to me! Perhaps it’s his handsome shaved head. Less hair makes him more aerodynamic, it just makes sense right. Well, no. Not really, we all wear helmets so in theory we are kind of riding with shaved heads.

All of us even the ladies. I’ll stop there just to save some of us the thought of your wife riding next to you bald as Mr. Clean. Oops! Sorry, damage done, picture painted in your mind now.

Anyway, after some more deep thought on Brian, I came up with the only possible explanation, it has to be his legs.

Muscular? Sure. But shaved legs too, hmm? Those of us who know Brian knows that his email address starts with shaved legs. So could that his secret on why he is so fast?

So sleek, so aerodynamic, zero drag. Ridiculous, sure and honestly I can’t really say, I have never checked out his legs for razor burn. But, you can bet your sweet Astronauts that I will be paying more attention on what peddles his bike and will find out eventually. Does Brian really shave his legs for faster speeds on his bike or, is it still something else that only can be answered

SINGLE SPEED MANIA

You have seen them all over town, light, fast, sleek and one little gear on the back. Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the deal? What are they? Do you want one? The answer is yes on all fronts. Best of all, you can make one of these cool one speed rigs out of the 10-speed that is in your garage. That old Italian bike may just become the coolest bike in town. Modesto is flat and singlespeeds are an efficient and quick way to get around town. There are even bike races and rallies for single speed bikes. If you have an extra 3-4 hours, you can make one of your own. Be careful, some of thes bikes you see have a fixed rear gear and that means NO COASTING. Unless you are super serious, get a freewheeling single speed and use a brake. You will thank me later.

Here is the quick and easy conversion: -Strip all components except the front brake. The front is more efficient and has a shorter cable.

-Remove all derailleurs and chain.

See if your bike as horizontal or vertical dropouts.

If it has vertical, you need a chain tensioner that costs around $40.00

You need to replace these things: -Quick release with locking skewers.

-Drop bar brake levers with a single mtn. bike lever and cable -Double and triple chainrings need to be reduced to one, so short chainring bolts are required.

-Flat or low-rise bars -Nice pedals to wear with sneakers -New grips Key decision. The cheapest way to do this is to use your existing freewheel with all the speeds and just remove the extra front chainrings. Otherwise you need to buy a new single freewheel, usually 1/2 x 1/8 chain pitch requiring you to buy new front chainrings and chain. ModestoView recommends keeping your multi-speed freewheel, chain and just remove the extra chainrings. The best gear selection for around Modesto is 40t front and 18t rear.

Put it back together: -Insert new locking skewers into hubs.

-Insert new bars and secure into stem.

-Install brake lever â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Chose right or left side and install cable and housing.

-Tighten and adjust front brake -Install chain tensioner -Replace front chainring in inside or outside position to best line up with rear 18t cog -Install wheels and secure in position -Install chain and adjust to fit as close to a 40 x 18 gear as possible.

-With horizontal dropouts, adjust for/aft position for chain tension and secure.

-Install grip (spray hairspray inside so they will stick after installation) -Grease pedal threads and install pedals, tighten securely -Adjust stem and saddle height, pump tires.

-Double check everything. If you are unsure, go to local bike shop and have them give it a quick tune up.

-Ride.

Decanting Wine

A decanter is any vessel that is used to hold the decantation of a liquid, in most cases wine. While there are hundreds of different decanters on the market that range from inexpensive to very expensive and have many different looks, any large glass vessel will work.

Throughout the history of wine, decanters have played a significant role; for ease of serving, removal of sediment, aeration and even just for “looks”. Most wines on shelves today, however, don’t have a real “need” for decanting. In the past it was quite common for wines to contain a considerable amount of solid matter or sediment. The sediment in a bottle won’t hurt you, but it’s not real pleasant in your mouth. Today’s winemaking process makes this a lot less common and most wines don’t throw much sediment until they reach about ten years of age. Decanting these older wines to remove the sediment may be desirable.

Young wines can benefit from decanting also, though the goal is not to remove sediment. With a young wine the goal is to aerate the wine or to encourage it to “open up”. The action of decanting itself, and the large surface area in contact with the air in the decanter, alters the wine, softening its youthful bite and encouraging the development of more complex aromas and flavors.

If decanting a wine simply to aerate it just pour the wine into any suitable receptacle, even a common pitcher will do just fine. If decanting to remove sediment, the procedure involves more care.

First, take the wine from where it has been stored, hopefully lying on its side in a suitably cool, dark environment.

If you suspect a considerable amount of sediment, as may occur with older wines, it’s advisable to stand the bottle upright for a day or so prior to decanting to allow the sediment to fall to the bottom of the bottle. Even if you don’t plan on decanting, this step can be beneficial when serving an older bottle of wine.

When the time comes to decant the wine, remove the entire capsule (wax or foil) from around the neck of the bottle so you have a clear view into the neck of the bottle.

This is so you can observe the wine coming through the neck for sediment.

To enhance your view you can position a light source to shine through the neck.

With a smooth and steady action pour the wine into the decanter without rushing, so as to avoid disturbing the sediment.

Stop pouring when you can observe sediment moving into the neck of the bottle. Don’t fret too much if you haven’t achieved a crystal clear pour as long as the large, unpalatable pieces have been removed.

Once the wine has been poured into the decanting vessel it can be served at any time depending on how much aerating or “opening up” you want to take place.
