EDITORS It getting exciting as I now become “Father of the Bride” Our soon to be larger family with Ryan Leupp wishes everyone a happy Harvest Haunting Season. Chris, Ryan Leupp, Madison, Becky & Abbey

Greetings Modesto Friends: I love fall.

The feeling of harvest season and most of all Halloween is just different. It is just wonderful this time of year. The café patios are nicer, the food tastes better, the flavors are stronger, it is a little cooler and the evenings get darker and it is still dark when I get my newspapers in the morning. Tomato season has wrapped up and my amazing crew at Sierra Pacific can breathe a little bit after cranking it so hard. This is the time for celebrating the incredible local music scene and honoring those who have made it better. This is the season for our fall festivals, school sports and sprinkles of rain. It is getting really busy so you need to check our ModestoView.com calendar before you leave the house. I love to walk. Walking in downtown, or to a coffee shop, or wherever. When I travel I walk, leave the hotels, find fun local places, ask around to see where people like to eat, pick up a copy of each city’s ModestoView type magazine and just try to explore. That is what we are doing here in Modesto. We like to walk from place to place, restaurant to restaurant, dinner to music to final cocktails. We need to continue to encourage new business downtown and welcome Rancho Fresco, Commonwealth and the expansion of Greens. If you haven’t tried these places out, you better git goin. Make sure you walk from place to place. Education is everything. You never stop learning. Every new ModestoView is a learning experience. We learn more bout our city, our people, or friends and who is really committed to teamwork and making our city a better place to live. We need to support our schools and the school programs. CSU Stanislaus s is our University for our entire region and is really important. Raise your hand if you are an alumni….. OK me too, so lets do a better job of connecting with our university and show the world this is a first class education available and show employers that there are talented people here in Modesto, waiting to make a difference. For those that raised your hands, I will be hitting you up to contribute to the One Purpose Scholarship Program. Let’s invest in higher education and keeping our talent pool here in Modesto. Living Local is Amazing I make a point to eat, drink, shop, listen and volunteer local. This is how we do it. This is how we make our city great. ModestoView connects with the best businesses in town that want to make a difference. If we focus on the positive, positive people read ModestoView and they find our great team of business and that makes our community stronger. We all do business with our friends and that is ModestoView. We are all friends making our city better, supporting each other and celebrating the good thinks happening. Just like James Taylor and Carole King sang “Winter Spring, Summer or Fall, all you have to do call, and I’ll be there” ModestoView is happy that you are reading and are our friends. It just works better that way. Family is the best I love my new role as Father of the Bride. Becky and I are so excited for Madison’s wedding next year and we are so happy Abigail is recovering from West Nile and things are spinning right again. So from my family to you and our amazing ViewCrew to you, we wish you a Happy Haunted Harvest Fall and enjoy all the interesting things that will cross your path, on the road, trail or on your computer or phone. We are all in this together and thank you. Please send me your comments about what you like and wish we did better.

by Ruben J. Porras I don’t know how you feel about the paranormal but living on I Street for a couple of years made me feel like we are simply not alone. Could it be that the McHenrys still roam the grounds of the mansion or that some long passed Gallos still come back for a sip or two? Halloween always makes me feel like I need to lock myself up and hide. I suppose I am a real wimp when it comes to fear. I’m not afraid to admit that I’m the guy that takes his garbage out at night and then runs back into the house like Satan himself is on my trail. I loathe scary movies because they make me feel like a hand will reach out from under my seat and pull me to my death. Recently when my girlfriend wanted a new bed she explained that we needed something tall enough to store things under. I thought she was crazy. Does she not know that under the bed is where serial killers and monsters hide? One of the strangest experiences that I ever had living downtown was on a cold winter night when I was alone in my apartment. I recall a figure sort of glowing and glistening in the corner of the room I was sleeping in. It was there one minute and gone the next and this happened for several nights in a row. I was terrified to the point that I reworked my entire space to sleep in another room. That room had a Murphy bed and every night I would say a little prayer to myself when I pulled out that bed. I just knew that something horrible and dangerous lurked behind it. Something that likely had a collection of knives and ice picks. Something with a hook for an arm and a thirst for the blood of a weird writer with an imagination that is stuck on overdrive. I’ll stop rambling now and focus on you for a minute. What will you do this Halloween? Will you take your kids out and ask for candy? -- You know, the same kids that have been told never to take candy from strangers. Will you spend your hard-earned money to get lost in a haunted house that may require you to wear an adult diaper? Will you sit through another screening of

HAUNTED HAPPENINGS

one of those terribly frightening films that are released every year? What is our obsession with wanting to feel paranoid and scared? I’ll never get it. Flip through our magazine this month for all sorts of tips and events about all things spooky happening in the 209. There is something for everyone to do. If for some reason you need me on Halloween night I will likely be somewhere cowering in fear, shrieking like a little girl and shaking like a leaf while my girlfriend laughs at me. She’s pretty darn cute so I

bend easily to her requests and I have a feeling that I will end up in a movie theatre that night. All I can say is that I hope that they have plastic seat covers! Have a safe and happy Halloween. Carve a pumpkin and not a person. Stuff a scarecrow and not your family pet. Whatever you do -- never, ever reach under the bed! Follow me online at facebook.com/rporraswriter or at twitter.com/writerlifeco. I’ll follow you back. I promise. Don’t be scared of me. Or should you be? {Insert evil laugh here.}

You can’t steal my idea, but I basically have tion (“I’m a bit of a history nerd,” stated eningly fancy and fun -- next door to the perfect Halloween costume for this year: Edgar Allen Hoe. I’m thinking black dress, black boots, tasteful push-broom mustache, and a raven on my shoulder for panache. Genius, right? I’m finding that Halloween cocktails, like the costumes of the ladies who slurp down said drinks, are getting progressively more sugary and gut wrenching. Where’s the creativity? Where is the class? Phil and I thus ventured to downtown Modesto in search of autumnal spooky sophisticated sips. The obvious place to go was Dewz. Dewz commitment to excellent taste is only outdone by it’s lovely bar interior. The man in charge of pouring the delicious nectar is Wyatt Smith, a fellow gin lover, avid deep water diver, and the excellent mixologist responsible for making my afternoon go down a bit smoother. This lucky ghoul was served a trio of delicious pours: the Princely State, combining gin, rum, juice, and black pepper into a savory cocktail nod to British coloniza-

Wyatt); followed by a classic Manhattan, Wyatt’s favorite, featuring black walnut bitters, Bulleit bourbon, and house brandied Washington cherries; lastly, Wyatt served a Black Strap Rum French pressed coffee, and topped with a cinnamon and Grand Marnier-infused whipped cream. Wyatt’s attention to detail is as refreshing as his Manhattan -- quality and experimentation are key. “Everything I can possibly can do I make in house and from scratch. The only time I don’t make it myself is when I know someone else can do it better,” he states. House infused vodkas line the bar (currently consisting of cucumber, pineapple, and cranberry), the cocktail list is lined with creative concoctions of Wyatt’s invention, the beer tap rotation is fantastic and beerbased cocktails are also offered, but if wine is more your dig, you’ve definitely darkened the right door. The wine list itself is staggering in its offered variety and character. Speaking of wine, here’s something fright-

Dewz proper is their interactive and sleek wine shop, featuring a fantastic vinos plugged into a pay-as-you sip card system. Once you get yourself a Dewz wine card, the sky is the limit with a candy store selection of two ounce pours. A charcuterie, cheese, and dessert Dewz menu is also available while you trick-or treat your way through the boozy fun. No dyed green martinis or store bottled syrups -- Dewz rightfully boasts a more sophisticated step toward your drinking palate, which Wyatt believes will always provide a more memorable and enjoyable experience. Indeed so, sir; Dewz has proved itself an ideal spot for leisurely October drinking. As the illusive Mr. Poe stated, “Who cares how time advances? I am drinking ale today.” Just in case you were curious to know, time passes particularly well at the Dewz bar. Happy Haunting, Modesto. DEWZ 1505 J St, Modesto, CA • 209.549.1101

CHEF Melt With Me!

FB: Dana’s Family Kitchen FOX40: See Chef Dana every 1st Friday of the month

by Dana Johnson

Brian Fiscalini and Dana Mariano Gonzales

One of my favorite songs of all time is me. She introduced me to Mariano Gonza“Dancing in the Moonlight” by King Harvest, so it’s not a stretch that one of my most favorite cheeses is called Purple Moon by Fiscalini Cheese made right here in Modesto. Purple Moon is cheddar aged over 10 months and soaked in a Nor Cal Coast Cabernet Sauvignon that is so Dana`licious! While I’m not convinced that a cow has really ever jumped over the moon, I do believe that without superior cows, you cannot produce superior milk that creates superior cheese. When I found out the “Best Traditional Cheddar in the World” at the World Cheese Awards in London, UK went to Fiscalini’s bandage wrapped cheddar for the 2nd time in 6 yrs. as recent as 2012 I had to scope it out for myself! Way out on Kiernan I found the farm and was miffed at where the retail store was hiding. The store is more like an office outside the door where many rich and creamy cheeses are being made for sale. Yes, you can purchase from there directly, but luckily we are surrounded by numerous local vendors that carry Fiscalini Farmstead Cheeses like Save Mart, Costco, Raley’s, Safeway, O’Briens, and several other local specialty stores including Chopping Block. I love that wineries are also inclined to have Fiscalini cheese for sale to purchase with my wine, like OakRidge Winery and Ficklin. When I walked in I was greeted by Lana Davidson-Valencia who had a bright smile and an excitement about cheese just like

10

les, a highly skilled cheese maker who has been with Fiscalini for 13 years. His passion for his craft runs deep, his education is impressive, and his commitment to making the best cheeses continues as does his education in his field. Amazing that even with all the prestigious awards to his credit, he still isn’t above learning more! 4 generations later, Fiscalini Farms is still family owned and operated and I met up with Brian Fiscalini. At the breezy age of 29, he is most happy to be married with 2 young children carrying on the family legacy that he also shares with his sister Laura Genasci. Their father John Fiscalini still resides on the property but he is retired now and enjoying the game of tennis. Brian has a good work ethic and a happy demeanor when it comes to running this massive farm that has not applied commercial fertilizers to crops in over 20 yrs. and produces renewable energy by converting traditional waste products into electricity and hot water. Modesto View owner/publisher, Chris Murphy, said only one word I could remember when discussing Oct. chef view article, “Fondue!” So I got out my fondue pot; All Fiscalini~ San Joaquin Gold, Hopscotch, Lionza, and Horsefeather’s Spread melted together, then I added crumbled cooked bacon, and a hint of garlic. I had grilled NY strip steak cubes alternated with sourdough French bread on skewers covered them in the gooey greatness paired with a bold cab, OMG! Next dish, hot angel

HAUNTED HAPPENINGS

hair pasta, spinach, & Fiscalini’s Scamorza! My Scarlett, 16, said she could eat like this every night for the rest of her life. Next she asked me for some wine to go with it, like I was so caught up in the moment that I would allow that, not! MoView signature question to Mariano:

Beatles or Stones? “Stones! Anyone can get inspired listening to the Stones!” So now I imagine in the moonlight on Fiscalini Farms the dairy cows are dancing to the Rolling Stones in order to produce the best cheese in the world!

Fiscalini’s Perfect Potato Recipe 1 large baked potato 1 tsp. butter 1/4 c. Fiscalini’s Horsefeathers Spread Cut top off baked potato and scoop out inside. Mix butter and Horsefeathers in a small bowl. Refill potato skin and bake 12 minutes at 325, until top begins to brown.

ROCKABILLY ROCKABILLY MAMA by Jennifer Allsup

Even though the Rockabilly category is still Alton. Even out the “Stagecoach Drifters “ fairly new to the annual Modesto Area Music Awards. The past three years have been fabulous to the genre. Let’s chat about this years’ 2014 nominees. First up “ Little Johnny & the Sleepwalkers” a Merced based trio that mixes sounds of Rockabilly and Psychobilly. Whether you’re the rough and ready type or the danity haltered polka dotted dressed kitten. You’ll be dancin’!! Oh, then there is the lovely “Betty Ann & the Lonesome lll”. A tall Blonde bombshell with a three piece in full throttle honky tonkin’ sound. Betty also takes pride in her 49’ Kaiser Traveler which she works on by herself. She is also the president of “Lady Luck Car Club”. Betty inspires women to feel like a beauty in their own skin. So if you’re honky tonkin’ around? Go check out Betty Ann & her Lonesome III. No Honey Jack here. Were about to taste some pure old country roots with a twist of Rockabilly! The “Honey Shots “ Modesto’s based married duo Tess & Devon Boyd on yet another exciting adventure in a musical highway. Always impresses me when I find a happily married couple with full time job & two boys that can find the time and passion for a little guitar pickin’. Adore the Boyd’s!!!!! There is not a man named “Charlie” in this mix of four drifters. But the “Reins Men” Tony Trevino is no strange to being the whip of these “Stagecoach Drifters”. Ridin’ “Shotgun” Jason Finely on lead guitar a master for strumming those lickin’ tunes. Can’t drive a strong coach without a “Near” handy with her slappin’ stand up bass Amie

with the “Off ” Anthony Azavedo standing and kickin’ a three piece drum to the rattle of the Reinsmen. Tiffany Rose & the Silvertones playing some country rock n roll classics along with her originals. Tiffany has a distinctive sultry voice a crowd pleased.Tiffany’s vibrant band makes everything sound right on key. You’ll never see a face light up and smile so big when upon the stage entertaining the crowd. These botcher’s are no secret to the Rockabliiy scene in Stockton.” The (Secret) Hitchers” play your honest outlaw country rock n roll.” The (Secret) Hitchers” formed to make ends meet sometime later here they are still kickin’ butt. Think you got the rhythm, to rock with the wrangler’s? The foothills, is one of my favorite places to stomp around. Well, with “Rockin’ Rick and the Rhythm Wranglers”, you’ll be delivered a shoe stompin’ grand time. Rick has played Viva Las Vegas including some of his artist on his record label “Hi Ho Silver Record”.

Jumpin’ on a wave with the masked bandits, on one heck of an instrumental ride with “Geronimo & the Scalpers”. These three masked gentlemen have a great stage presences. Keeping the overseers moving along the wide tide of he dance floor. Love watching them perform. Always leaving the crowd with shouts out of “One more”!! One nominee left, but definately not last! Mr. Roddy Jackson from Merced, Ca. Mr.Jackson is a teacher and a legendary entertainer. Born in Fresno, Ca. Roddy started his musical talent at the age of twelve learning piano and drum. Shortly after forming his first band “The Dreamers “. In his high school days Roddy auditioned at Specialty Records and played with the Merced Blue Notes and was part of the central valley’s first supergroup, Kent Witt and the Downbeats with Roddy Jackson. Roddy was signed as a solo artist, by recommendation of Sonny Bono. Roddy continued playing but and still tours around the world as a global ambassador of Rockabilly music. Some songs you might be familiar with. “I’ve Got my Sights Set On Someone New” & “Hiccups “ both done in 1958....a Rockabilly Legend!!! INTER Meet Mic Gillette One of the legends of power horns will

be performing in Modesto on October 18. This will be a special benefit show for the Center for Human Services and is an event you can’t miss. Tower of Power is legendary around the world and Mic Gillette is one of the founding members making the transition from a band called of all things, “The Motowns” to Tower of Power, with regular airplay on the legendary KSAN in 1970 with huge hits “You’re Still A Young Man” and “So Very Hard to Go”. Their sound would come to define a power brass sound and still dominates today. Mic was a musical prodigy and learned to play trumpet when he was 4 and has spent his years teaching music and raising money for school music programs. Mic Gillette has generously shared his talent with the Modesto community over the years and this show at the State will be spectacular. We were fortunate to get a few words with Mic as he prepped for this show with the Mic Gillette Band. ModestoView: Did you ever think your love of music would take you to the forefront of the power horn music scene? Mic Gillette: No, it was all about playing music and shaping it to be fun to play and hear. We played for us. When people liked it and encouraged us, we ran with the ball. For almost a year, I was the only horn in the band. Then I started building the horn section and the game was on! MV: Tower of Power has become the “gold standard” by which other horn sections are judged, what made it so special? MG: The strength and tightness of the horn section was truly the reason we chose the name. I am a strong lead player and when we added Doc Kupka on Baritone Sax, I picked up the trombone and this added to the breadth of our sound. In my humble opinion, there have been several other lead trumpet players in the band since I left who I consider to be much better than me, but as one of the original arrangers of the funk style, they don’t do what I did. I don’t mean to sound cocky, but a certain degree of confidence is what it takes to lead a section like that. That, and a whole lotta air.

12

by Chris Murphy MV: You started playing early and had a special talent, what do you say to encourage kids that need to work a little harder to stick with learning to play an instrument? MG: First thing I tell them is to stop practicing. This normally does not sit well

with their band directors until I explain my statement. If you want to get better at your instrument, you need to play a lot. But when you DO play, don’t practice, perform. Practicing is like trying, and as we all know, Yoda said there is no try. Do or do not. My take on that is when you play, don’t TRY to play, PERFORM! Play every note you play the very best you can every time. With this, you are always playing your best, and that becomes your standard. You won’t doubt yourself as long as you know you are always capable of playing your best. MV: What was one of your favorite Tower or Power moments? MG: Recording our Back To Oakland album (Time Will Tell and Below Us All the City Lights) with my Father, Ray Gillette at my side on trombone. My first performances as a small boy were playing by HIS side, and this completed a circle in my life. Ray was the best trombonist alive, I was told by many of the top musicians of his day. I miss him terribly but do my best to honor him with my horns, using all that I learned from him.

HAUNTED HAPPENINGS

MV: What drives you to make all the efforts you do to share your gifts and to teach music? MG: I don’t believe in “trade secrets” or hiding what makes great musicians so special. I think that is rude and selfish, to think that no one will ever be as good as them. I believe the next generation of musicians is supposed to be BETTER than my generation, and you know what? My generation ain’t so bad! MV: If you could share the stage for a gig at Carnegie Hall with anyone, who would it be? MG: My Father, hands down. That, no longer being possible, I would choose my daughter Megan to be at my side. The world is beginning to hear from her now. Amazing talent and sensitivity. And my hero. MV: What do you enjoy most about performing for such a wonderful cause in Modesto? MG: How could I turn down such an op-

portunity? Our band, MGB is breaking out right now, and the brain behind this wonderful show, Dave Boyatt, a true leader in his community, has the foresight and drive to include us in raising funds and awareness where it is needed most, on the home front. I really hope we pack the State Theater and all have a great time doing it! MV: What’s next for Mic Gillette? MG: Several very important things. First, we are in the recording studio recording our 2nd CD and it is coming along beautifully. Second, our daughter Megan has 2 incredible young boys, Maverick 2 years old, and Wyatt 5 months old. I am the happiest grandfather you will ever meet.

NON-PROFIT Northern California Womens Music Festival by Victoria Boyington, Special Guest Writer

Coming up with the concept behind The Northern California Women’s Music Festival started with a bit of inspiration five year’s ago. Founder and Director, Victoria Boyington was inspired after watching a documentary on Gloria Steinman. The

words of Steinman, “the best way to cultivate fearlessness in our daughters and other young women is by example” she says, “became the driving motivational force in cultivating our motto “Community For Every Woman” and “I believe we have created a format for the future of women in fine arts and business.” The festival is a welcomed presence in an environment that is embracing growing female empowerment especially among local musicians and artists. Not limited to a specific music style, the festival is defined by gender. In a desire to build the groundwork for generations to come, The NCWMF plans to expand and to reach out to include a larger audience through a variety of events that will benefit women throughout Northern California. The inaugural festival includes a concert featuring a variety of women performers from Northern California with a featured spot by the winner of the organization’s songwriting

contest. The line-up of performers includes Deborah Yates, Marirose Powell, Karmen Buttler, Patty Castillo Davis, Raylene Kemp, Mattea Overstreet, Iraya Cress, Victoria Boyington, The Funstrummers, The House of Orange, Amanda Wright, Bethany Joseph, Bekkah Barnett and Phoebe Zayas Defiance. Accompanying the music of the evening, there will be featured art and poetry from local women of all ages which will be on display and available for purchase. The event will also include vendors representing the finest women owned and operated local businesses. All proceeds will be donated to the Women’s Haven Center in Modesto with remaining proceeds benefiting women in Northern California though the festival’s Enrichment Grant Program. Submissions for the enrichment grant will begin January 1, 2015. Applications will be available online at: www.northerncaliforniawomensmusicfestival.com

BIG Did you know that we are in the midst of National Hispanic Heritage Month? by Ruben J. Porras ModestoView believes that a diverse community promotes acceptance and positive growth and helps to make our community a more colorful and interesting place to call home. The following are a series of questions and answers that we asked influential Latino community leaders, Tony Madrigal, Modesto City Councilmember and Maggie Mejia, President of the Latino Community Roundtable (LCR) of Stanislaus County.

is why LCR celebrates Cinco de Mayo in May, but looks forward to educate our community with the History of National Hispanic Heritage Month.

MV: Why do you choose to work so hard working with and advocating for the Hispanic community? Madrigal: As a Modesto City Councilmember for District 2 I know represent everyone in my district and Modesto, and I also happen to be a former farmworker who is proud to be bilingual, and bicultural. Because of my background I feel a deep connection to our Latino community which I have a personal understanding

14

about which is why I love to serve, represent, and advocate for our Modesto community. I’ve been advocating and serving all my life. I recall since I was about 10 years old, I’d serve as an interpreter for family members and farmworkers in our community where everyone knew each other. Mejia: I look forward to this month because there are so many members in our community that still think Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s Day of Independence and that

HAUNTED HAPPENINGS

MV: In your opinion what is the most important role that the Hispanic population plays in our community? Madrigal: Our Latino community plays many roles as it now represents 43% of Stanislaus County’s population. One thing is certain, we must have the united support of our entire community, including our Latino population, as move our community forward to create local jobs, make our neighborhoods safer, and protect our local water supplies. Mejia: My view is obvious that the Latino market continues to make a difference in our economy. You continue to see Latinos becoming business owners, executives, and continue to make strides on a National level. It is impressive to see so many Latino businesses that have seen the bad with the good and have survived all these years. I respect them for not giving up. This is one of the reasons, LCR is recognizing the businesses that have contributed to our economy for over 20 years. MV: Do you have a particular Hispanic role model or hero? Madrigal: My mom is my main hero because she’s such a hard worker, honest, and passionate about helping others. I feel I got much of my passion for public service from seeing her in action all my

life. My momma was so creative about finding ways to help others who were less fortunate, that I was little and we drove to Mexico to visit family for the holidays each year she’d stuff our pillowcases with old clothes so we could give it to kids along the way. Another hero of mine is Dolores Huerta. Dolores Huerta is such a lifelong champion of labor and civil rights and I’m so inspired by her. I’m proud to say I’ve met her several times and she always remembers my name and knows I’m a Councilmember. Her main message is steadfast: Keep organizing around your community’s issues, get people involved. Mejia: My role models were my parents. They always gave & shared with others & asked for nothing in return. About National Heritage Month according to hispanicheritagemonth.com “During National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15) we recognize the contributions made and the important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States and celebrate their heritage and culture. Hispanics have had a profound and positive influence on our country through their strong commitment to family, faith, hard work, and service. They have enhanced and shaped our national character with centuries-old traditions that reflect the multiethnic and multicultural customs of their community.”

What is Day of the Dead?

Day of the Dead/Dia De Muertos is observed throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The celebration takes place on October 31, November 1 and November 2, in connection with the triduum of All Hallowtide, All Hallows’ Eve, Hallomas and All Souls Day. It is tradition to build private altars called ofrendas, honoring the deceased using sugar skulls and marigolds and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts. They also leave possessions of the deceased.

This

event becomes more important every year here in Modesto. This is the collision of our Latino heritage, our Rockabilly history and our cultural future. The art traditions of Rockabilly music are linked with Day of Dead imagery, sounds and fashion. The classic cars being created by the next generation are inspired by both Rockabilly, Latino traditions and a “Los Muertos” culture that is both exciting and culturally important. MAMAAwards 2014

The Modesto Area Music Association turns 15 this year! It seems like just yesterday, Chris Ricci and I were wondering how we could create a great way to celebrate the amazing music talent in the greater Modesto area. So we decided to create our own black tie, Grammy-style Awards Show. Since the beginning, back at Club Maxx in the Doubletree, through two State Theatre remodeling projects, the opening of the Gallo Center and a year at the Fat Cat, the MAMAs were created to highlight and showcase the amazing musicians, singers, songwriters, promoters and the places and the events where they play. The home of the MAMAs is the fabulous historic State Theatre. We are excited to announce two new categories this year, Reggae and Punk and we will present awards in 21 categories that will all be presented the iconic Carhop MAMA trophy, produced and donated by Beeler Industries. This night is special. It is all about live music across our community, from Dixieland Jazz, to Metal and Rockabilly, we shine a light on local music. We hope you take a look. Please make a point to go see a live show. Eat at restaurants that host live music, and tell your politicians and city officials that new need to support and encourage live music. Please find a new band you like and more important, purchase their music and merchandise. We need to listen local. This year, we have a very special presentation. Back in 1958, Kent Whitt and the Downbeats started playing Rock and Roll. This was the start of this new live band music here in Modesto. The first rock and roll was on KBOX beginning in 1950 and by the late 50s KFIV (formerly KMOD) took over. As the kids in Modesto Dragged 10th, 1360 KFIV would play the songs of the day and since there was only one rock station, everyone shared the same music. Kent Witt and the Downbeats were the first Modesto area rock and roll band. This band included Kent Witt on drums, Bob DeLeon on Keyboard, Danny Toledo on Sax and Bill Gross on Bass, Connie Hightman on Guitar. The band was first formed to play school dances at Modesto High School and then became a popular draw in the area playing the California Ballroom and the Fable Room regularly as well as high school gyms. Roddy Jackson, living in Merced founded the Blue Notes with his high school friends in 1956. He was also touring up and down the central valley, was signed as a solo act to Specialty Records and making recordings like “I’ve Got My Sights on Someone New” that received national airplay. Roddy was the first recorded local rock and roller. Roddy joined up with the Downbeats and they become the Modesto area’s first “superband” and played regularly and later, without Roddy, did a USO tour throughout South East Asia. This band inspired later musical legends. Roddy would go on and become a touring musician and recorded songwriter and still performs today around the world. Ceres’s Jim Burgett scored a national hit with the single “Do I Worry?” and others like “Let’s Investigate”. In the mid 1960s, local musicians like Michael Allsup grew up listening to Kent Witt and the Downbeats, would travel and join national bands like the multi-million selling Three Dog Night. Michael recognized the influence of Kent Witt and the Downbeats in his autobiography “The Upside of Rock and Roll”

BLUES MAMA Awards Time

Support Your Local She-Riff

by Big Earl Matthews The world-renowned Mic Gillette Band will rock the State Theatre on October 18 to benefit the Center for Human Services’ Pathways program.

Hello everyone, fall is here and in Modesto that means MAMA awards time. I had the pleasure of helping out with the organization of the event again this year. It’s truly amazing how many bands we have in our area. I mean, just look at the list on the MAMA website (modestoareamusic. com.) The number of bands nominated this year is crazy and of course the nominations do not represent every active band in our area. It’s just a drop in the bucket of what we have to offer local music lovers on a weekly basis. I want to let you all know that it fills me with inspiration and joy to know how artistically rich our community is. I’d like to say thanks to everyone who works hard to keep the train on the tracks and moving forward. It takes a lot of effort, support and dedication to put on shows week in and week out and for that I thank you on behalf of everyone who gets to enjoy the fruits of your labors. Moving right along, I have been on a break from performing for the last three months but I am happy to report that I am back. I will be making my return to the stage at the Gallo Center on October 24. We are

working hard to put together a show that we are sure will knock your socks off. On October 03, the MOFO Party Band is coming to Hero’s for a night of goodtime blues. These fellas are the masters of the party and always deliver. Plan on dancing! On October 18, the Mic Gillette Band will be playing at the State Theatre. The show is a benefit for the Center for Human Services’ Pathways Program. Gillette is one of the most well known horn players in the world. This is sure to be a night well worth the effort and it should benefit a great local cause well. You can get tickets online through the State Theatre (thestate.org) or Center for Human Services (centerforhumanservices. org) or at Gottschalk Music Center, Barkin’ Dog Grill, or Ingram & Brauns Musik Shoppe. Tickets are $25. Last but not least. For the last two or three years I have been going to this really great Halloween party at the Prospect Theater. The band, The Wrong Doers always host and always bring along some friends to help keep the energy level high. This will be the first Halloween at the new location (1214 K Street) and I for one am really excited about keeping up the tradition. I hope to see you all out and about this month enjoying what Modesto and the rest of 209 have to offer.

And by ‘they,’ I mean one friend of mine who noticed my tendency to book lots of female talent, and sarcastically skewered me for skewing in that direction. Well, I make no attempt to deny it. Many of my headline acts have featured the lovely lilting of ladies. That’s the sort of sound which resonates with me the best. Go, girls with guitars! I’ll probably be in heaven, then, when the organizers of the Northern California Women’s Music Festival present their inaugural fest on Saturday the 18th. The team behind this have assembled a large roster including some of the most accomplished lady singer-songwriters of our area: Francesca Bavaro, Marirose Powell, Patty Castillo Davis, Raylene Kemp and more; and several other visiting artists from elsewhere in California. Local female poets and painters will also be showcased. Full listings and artist bios can be found at northerncaliforniawomensmusicfestival. com. There is also a songwriting contest which there is still time to submit to - final deadline is 10/10. Sister songwriters can send their original compositions in CD format with three typed copies of lyrics and $10 per entry via check payable to NCWMF, to P.O. Box 541, Ceres, CA 95307. Three finalists will be invited to perform their pieces, with the winner receiving a cash prize and recording time at Modesto Sound. Festival will be held at Prospect Theater, 1214 K St., from 5 to 11:30 PM. Tickets are $10. The following Saturday & Sunday, 25th & 26th, I have the honor of hosting two showcases starring L.A.-based songwriter and actress Rebecca Pidgeon. You may recognize her from her film appearances, but it is her lovely serenading that I hope you will come to know her for. She had a Grammynominated album a couple years ago, and is

touring in support of her new record ‘Bad Poetry.’ I like this lady’s style so much that I am offering up two chances to catch her. Both concerts will he held at Prospect Theater. Saturday at 7 PM with openers Patty Castillo Davis and award-winning cowboy/ campfire musician Kerry Grombacher; and Sunday at 3 PM with Chris Farris and Josephine Johnson. Tickets for each are $15 advance/$20 at door; or $25 if you’d like to enjoy both days’ lineups. Email modestounplugged@yahoo.com or call 209-543-5306. The latest season of ‘Sunday Afternoons At CBS’ continues on Sunday 10/12 with featured group Cradle Duende, performing a sweet fusion of Balkan, Klezmer, Latin and other world sounds. Showcase starts at 3 PM at Congregation Beth Shalom, 1705 Sherwood Ave. Tickets are $20 adult, $15 senior/student, $7 for children. Several nominees in the Americana and Singer/Songwriter categories of this year’s MAMA awards will be running around NorCal this month to share their music: Every Friday - Cottonwood Creek at Bett’s Gold Coin in Mariposa starting at 8:30. Saturday 10/11 - Sparrow Grove is among a country lineup at American Legion Post 521 in Rio Linda. This is a canned food & clothing drive sponsored by Honky-Tonk For Hunger. 12-6 PM. Sunday 10/12 - Alida McKeon & Patty Davis at the Riverbank Wine & Cheese Expo. Tuesday 10/21 - Francesca Bavaro at Alchemy Wine Bar in Murphys. 5:30-8 PM. After the MAMA ceremony on Tuesday night the 14th, Modesto Unplugged will host an acoustic afterparty at Minnie’s Restaurant. The awards show should wrap sometime around 11 PM, so migrate over right afterward and enjoy some acoustic jamming and featured sets by some of the nominees and others. See you at the big night!

MAMA

MAMA Favorites by Middagh Goodwin

October has always been one of my fa- Hop), Nathan Ignition(Singer Songvorite months and over the last three years being nominated and winning the MAMA for Promoter I have enjoyed it even more. This year even though I am not in the running for Promoter it is not going to be any different. I have been working behind the scene to help make the 15th Annual Modesto Area Music Awards being held at the State Theatre October 14th 6pm will be the best year ever. Two new categories have been added this year Punk and Reggae, the venue categories have been expanded and vote numbers have been at their highest ever. We have some great bands scheduled to perform this year including Renegade Conspiracy(Rock), Call Box(Pop Rock), Brutal Innocence(Metal), MSeaG(Hip

writer), City Psychology(Alt Rock), Ryan Russell(Americana), Triple D/Fleetwood Mac Tribute(you won’t want to miss this) and more. If this all wasn’t fun enough we have some extra surprises in store for everyone. Voting continues until 11:59 on Sunday October 12th so if you haven’t yet take a moment to Vote if you have encourage your friends and families to do so too. Once again Congratulations and Good Luck to all those who are nominated. Last year the Brewhouse at Hero’s won the MAMA for Best Venue and if you look at the schedule of events for October you will all know why. Oct.3rd the MoFo Party Band will have Modesto jumping with their good Rockin’ Blues. Oct.4th Cobalt45

artist from all over Nor Cal including several MAMAnees and past winners. Plans are in the work for something a little different, November 13th-22nd several of Modesto’s Promoters will co promote an Unconventional Venue Crawl with shows at The Brewhouse at Hero’s, Spinnakers and The Other Place, Cafe Deva and more. Each night a different Venue will be showcased by a different promoter featuring Punk, Metal, Rockabilly, Indie and more. We hope to encourage music fans to check out different Venues and hear something you might not be used to. Celebrating the venues that allow us to have such a vibrant music scene, the local bands who help keep it going and the fans who keep it growing. When the tide rises we all rise with it. There are always lots of great things happening in and around Modesto so take a look at the back pages check out the Calendar and make plans to see a show, hear some music, check out some comedians or look at some art. Friends don’t let Friends Miss great Shows.

METAL

Hey there friends and neighbors, it’s MAMA Awards season and as a nominee its hard to describe what it feels like to have the honor of being nominated for such a thing. I have mixed feelings about this event but I will not let all of my personal feelings bleed into this column. However opinions will be expressed. When it comes to metal in this town I hold it very dear and we are lucky to even be recognized. Modesto by large in not a very metal friendly town. It is very hard to get a gig in the Mo these days. Out of the 23 or so venues or so nominated this year only a small handful of venues will openly promote metal shows and only 2 of them are in Modesto far from the once friendly confines of downtown Modesto. Spinnakers and The Other Place both on Yosemite Blvd are the strongholds of local metal and sadly the only real place we have to go to see metal bands while other venues have said they will consider, it has yet to happen. The owner of both bars Bobby Cristoulakis should be commended for helping our scene stay alive. The people who put on metal and hard rock bands are being honored. Pamsterdam Promotionz, Myself (209Productions), Nic Padilla Promotions and Jill Ferris/Ryan Irons Presents

has a night of Hip Hop scheduled to get everyone grooving. Oct.15th The Slackers (NYC-SKA) returns with Sammy Kay & the Fast Four and Modesto’s own Proper Steady Originals. Oct.16th Punkabilly reigns supreme with the Koffin Kats(MI), The Independents (SC), OC45(MA) and the Nekrobats. Oct.17th The Brew HA HA will be celebrating our One Year Anniversary with some of our favorites from the last 12 months and as always hosted by Jimmie Menezes. Oct.18th it is St Paddy’s Day in October with The Tossers(IL) one of the best Irish Pub Rock bands in the world, Continental(MA) and more. If you are feeling the need to Rock check out Nic Padilla’s Event featuring The Alpha Complex, Hit&Run, Nothing But Losers and more at the Other Place and Spinnakers on October 3rd 7pm $12, 9 Bands, 2 Bars, 1 Night. This might be the biggest thing to hit Yosemite Street in years. On Oct.18th at the Prospect Theatre check out the Northern California Women’s Music Festival celebrating sisterhood in the arts community. Over 18 performer and

are all keepers of the flame and have all worked hard to bring the people local and national metal bands. The rest of the promoter nominees I’ve never heard of with the exception of Ron & Doug’s Excellent Promotions who champion local rock & cover bands. As per usual the bands who were nominated are pushing it and when asked what they thought of the MAMA Awards “Were just happy to be nominated” said Michael Potter of Divest Dreggs. and “It’s the best party of the year” said Rock Nominee Kevin Nicholas of Antithesis of It. The most excited seems to be Los Banos natives and Modesto adopted Brutal Innocence who have jubilantly promoted themselves and this occasion and I will bet they will be the most well dressed and coordinated band of the MAMA Awards as per their normal style. So for those of you attending the MAMA awards METAL is always the last category and most people leave before we are recognized and I beg you to stay till the end and support the people that fight and scratch everyday to keep our scene alive. That is all for me this month as always!! KEEP ONE FOOT IN THE GUTTER AND THE OTHER ON THE GOLD!!!

Happy in Modesto

by Mary Layton So far this has been a super active year for most everyone I talked to. Lots of positive changes but of course, there are always life’s hurdles and dramas. How do we stay happy and healthy, how do we balance out the ups and downs? There are so many nice things going on in our own community. Talented art teachers who offer a variety of painting and drawing classes for all levels. There is sewing, cooking, crafts and all sorts of outside activities. There are many wonderful, terrifically patient and kind music and voice teachers. Lots of different types of exercise classes that are challenging in a total sort of way. What they all have in common is that they improve the quality of our lives. They help to bring out our spirit and stimulate the creative part of our brains. Somehow we feel happier – for at least an hour or two we forget our problems and the daily grind. We walk away feeling rejuvenated and inspired. We also may meet new people, make new connections. This is truly an investment of time and effort with a healthy return that you can count on. For more info go to : taichi4modesto.com or call (209)572-4518

Trident Through the Heart

by Sam Pierstorff

Ninja Poet, MJC Professor and ModestoView Poet Laureate

From the back row of the classroom, I watch her gracefully unfold and scan the flier I had given her last month about my poetry reading this month. For a moment, I fantasize about her front row appearance next Sunday afternoon — legs crossing, polished red lips glowing in the perimeter of the spotlight that encircles me as she leans forward to eavesdrop on unspoken messages passed between us when others can only hear the cacophony of metaphor. But within seconds, she reaches with two fingers like tweezers into her mouth and extracts a wet, pink piece of bubble gum, pressing it firmly into the center of the flier. And as she folds it back into fours, I hear the gum crackle— the last bubble bursting.

BLUES&JAZZ If you love Jazz you’re going to love this. by Eric Benson The year marches on with morning chill and long shadows, and pumpkins and jack lanterns, then on to coolin the goose with all the trimming for Thanksgiving then, then with acceleration to light speed for the merriment of Christmas time in the city. Well there is plenty to plan for and be thankful for. Here’s some of my thought on my schemes on the low down on the get down coming up. One of my fav’s, Bruce Forman, Jazz guitarist extraordinaire is swinging through on Friday Nov 7th at venue to be announced. Bruce is bringing in Cowbop, a five piece band playing Western swing music on steroids with bebop solo’s and fantastic arrangements, Johnny Valdes CD release party will be at the Blue Monday Party Nov 8th at the Barkin’ Dog, and working on a date to have Chris Cain Band come in to do a Christmas Show in December. Also workin’ on Steve Lucy and the Rhumba bums for the hollowdaze. Blue Monday Party invitational Jazz and Blues Jam continued with great musicians of music lovers. Monday Oct 6th one the better Jazz guitarists alive today Eddie Duran, now 87 comes through as our guest artist. He is still playing some of the best straight ahead Jazz guitar you will ever hear. Eddie is one of the fathers of west coast jazz and has played with Vince Guaraldi, Cal Tjader, Stan Getz, Charlie Parker, Red Norvo and others, and recorded a gazillion albums on west coast labels as a house guitarist. He will come down for Blue Monday Blues and Jazz jam on Monday Oct 6th. Eddie stylistically can play chord melody as well as effortless fluid jazz lines and is one of the nicest cats in the business. His wife Madeline Duran will accompany him on Sax with house rhythm section John Adey on bass, and Dave hawks on drums. So come down you won’t want to miss this Blue Monday Party. Will be playing music for listening and dancing. Show goes 7:00 to 10:00 PM. Call for reservations if you want a good seat. Took a field trip to see Chicago at the Gallo and other than being very loud was a crowd pleaser, played the hits and kept the music flowing with only a short intermission. I’ll

The Gallo Center for the Arts continues with their diverse booking in Oct: 1st Emmylou Harris, 3 & 4th MSO with violinist Randall Goosby, 9th Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, and 17th Gin Blossoms. AUTHOR “Baseball and the Blues” In honor of the MAMAs.

by Ken White

When Mr. Lowney was done giving us the lowdown on his baseball career, he turned to the blues. He punctuated each pronouncement with a note or two on the harp. Happy and sad, upbeat and downbeat, fast and slow, cool and hot, and all the colors and flavors in between. “There’s nothing more American than baseball and the blues,” he said. “Both were born on the backroads and in the backwaters and at the crossroads of the American continent. If you want to understand the heart and mind and soul of America, who we are as Americans, you need to know both.” He gave a rapid-fire rundown of the long road they’d traveled together. “Baseball and the blues were born to break your heart. Baseball ain’t nothin’ but a good player tryin’ not to be bad. The blues ain’t nothin’ but a good man feelin’ bad. Baseball opens in the spring, when everything begins again. The blues have always been about new beginnings. Baseball ends when the chill rains of fall come. The blues never end. Baseball blossoms in the summer air and light. The blues are in full bloom just ‘round midnight. Baseball and the blues celebrate all the curves that life throws you. We play baseball to lift our souls. We play the blues to bare our souls. We play baseball to heal our hearts. We play the blues because our hearts have been hurt. We play baseball to get home safe. We play the blues because we have no safe home to get to. Baseball and the blues have a long memory. In baseball and the blues, you fail more than you succeed. One for three gets you into the Hall of Fame. In baseball, many are best remembered for their failures, not their successes. The blues celebrates that. Baseball and the blues reflect our triumphs and defeats. When we’re good, we’re very good. When we’re bad, there’s nothing worse. Baseball and the blues both make you suffer. Baseball and the blues tell a lot of the same stories. About race, playing it straight and cheating, immigration, the tension between fathers and sons, acceptance, class warfare, alienation, labor and management, pop culture, myth, the individual and the crowd, and heroes. In baseball and the blues, you can feel good and bad. Up and down. In and out. Fair and foul. Like a winner and a loser. Sometimes all at the same time. We see our own daily lives reflected in the wins and losses, trials and tribulations, of our baseball heroes. The blues sings songs about it. Baseball and the blues are haunted by ghosts of who and what have gone before. Of past heroes and moments, of present successes, of future dreams. Baseball and the blues are all about hope. Of a brighter day and a better tomorrow. For baseball and the blues, practice sometimes makes perfect. Baseball looks easy when it’s done right. So does the blues. They both fool us into thinking we’ve got it all figured out. Just before it all falls apart. No one beats baseball or the blues for long. In baseball and the blues, trouble happens. And I love them both as dearly as the Valley loves the rain.”

FIT Healthy Golden Years by Efren Martinez Even though I’ve been known to be able various services and education that will be to hold my own on the bike and in a foot race at age 46, I can’t help but come to the realization that I’m just a few years away from turning 50. I just recently I hooked up with Kim Viviano, from The Healthy Aging Association, in regards to the programs they offer to those who are 50 and over. Looking forward to the future, I feel that the more knowledge I have right now in regards to aging will help me when it’s game time in my senior years. Don’t get me wrong, I’m in no way saying that when I turn 50 it’s time to turn in my bicycle for a scooter. I’m saying that aging can be a healthy, happy and fun part of one’s life. On Friday, October 17th, I’ll be attending the Healthy Aging Summit at the Centre Plaza in Modesto. This event is free to the community and is specifically targeted to those who are 50 and over so that they may continue to live a healthy lifestyle through

offered there. Being 50 plus can be just be a number, especially when it comes to my friend Dave Enz. Dave won’t be slowing down any time soon. Dave’s 60 years young and is very active in kayaking, enjoys after dinner walks and his preferred choice of fitness is bicycling. In fact he loves riding his bike so much that he and my good buddy, Ed Battisfore, just celebrated their one-year anniversary as the business owners of the Oakdale Bike Shop in Oakdale. Dave’s made it a point to educate others of all ages, especially in his age group, of just how important it is to stay active and safe while riding the bike. Both he an Ed lead 4 different bike ride levels a week that range from distance and speeds to cater to all fitness levels. Dave is also very active in our community. When he’s not working at the Oakdale Bike Shop or leading a group ride,

you’ll find Dave volunteering for various charity rides like the upcoming Fruit Yard Century bicycle fitness event on October 6th at The Fruit Yard in Waterford. This charity bicycle event sports 3 distances and both Dave and Ed will proudly be there offering their support. Dave’s fitness message to the folks 50 and older, “Focus on staying flexible, walking, stretching and palates along with a cycling routine is a great way to keep you strong and fit.” The Oakdale Bike Shop would like to invite you to any one of their free bike socials. They happen every Friday from 6pm-9pm.

This is an event to get all of the seasoned and beginner riders together to talk all things bicycle, play with all the new bikes and accessories at the shop, and to make new ride connections with friends. Snacks and drinks are always served and it is open to everyone, regardless of where you purchased your bike. October 11th - Fitness Event The Fruit Yard Cycling Event info @ www.stancobike.org

Pumpkin Seeds by Leia Johnson

Pumpkin seeds, sporting events, fallen leaves, and of course Halloween. October is finally here! This month is one of the most eventful of the year, every weekend there is something super fun to do. My Friday nights will be spent cheering on the football field. Come show your school spirit at your favorite high school’s football games. However, football isn’t the only sport going on right now. The previous writer for the All-Ages section of the Modesto View was the talented water polo player Abbey Murphy. Though I’ve never tried the sport, I plan to support my school’s team. Soccer, Cross Country, Golf, Volleyball are also all having games and meets. All of the school’s sport event dates should be on their websites. Now, I’ve always been heard that Downey’s drama program looks professional. After seeing West Side Story, I completely agree. They have music, dancing, crazy characters, and most importantly, a ton of fun! Make sure to come

see Downey’s, “Little Shop of Horrors” this month. It is showing October 24th, 25th and November 1st at 7:30 pm as well as November 2nd at 2:30 pm. There will be a special showing on Halloween at 10:00pm complete with a costume contest. Students $6 and General Admission $8. It will be a trip you won’t regret making! The Modesto’s Boy’s and Girl’s Club will be hosting a family friendly haunted house in our very own McHenry Mansion from October 24th to the 30th. The admission is only five dollars, and children under the age of five get in for free. There will be fun games, pumpkin painting, and spooky, goofy encounters. To find more information and to purchase tickets, check out www.hauntedhousemodesto.com. I hope to see all of you out in the community soon, whether it’s in the stands, the auditorium or a haunted mansion.

BARGAIN Oktoberfest Words and Photos by Monica Barber There’s a slight chill in the breeze that tickles the bones on this fine afternoon. In fact, Ms. Monica has caught a light sneeze while sitting outside of Concetta’s enjoying a glass of wine. Folding my handkerchief I realize how lovely it is to enjoy the ambiance of fall and a skeleton walks by. It’s definitely the season darlings and not the wine. So let’s keep your bones in the money… October wouldn’t be the same without Oktoberfest! Check out the 31st annual celebration on October 3rd that honors German heritage with some of the area’s finest wines, micro-brews and authentic German cuisine. Enjoy live entertainment and more. Ping Pong in your blood? Do you like to support a great local organization for kids? For one special night, enjoy gameroom fun typically reserved for Boys and Girls Club of Stanislaus County members. Enjoy the Club atmosphere that kids love so much, adding some hors d’oeuvres and beverages that grown ups crave, setting the stage for business teams to go to battle on the ping pong table for championship bragging rights!
