holiday is Halloween, I love the voodoo and music of New Orleans and the art of Dio De Los Muertos and all of the music and events that go with it. No Halloween is without a pilgrimage to Disneyland and experience the fun there. This probably explains our October cover created my Michael J Mangano and the cast of characters we have here that bring this all home. Heck, our own house is on the Omega Nu Halloween Tour. It’s not just the art and the music, but it is the taste of October that makes it so special. Everything smells and feels better when it turns to fall. Chef Dana treats us to some amazing fall cuisine with some of my favorite butter nut squash and pumpkin flavors and we even have a Harvest Festival downtown on the 17th. And of course this month ends with some seriously haunted cocktails from our fave local watering holes and a trip to Minnie’s is as close as you can get to Tortuga for some voodoos and zombies. Ah yes, I love this time of year and hope you do too. But wait, there’s more. The music of October is especially amazing as we get ready for the 16th annual Modesto Area Music Awards. Over 22 award categories 240 nominees and a night of music that is unique to most cities in American. But yes, here in Modesto USA we have fabulous talent and so many great musicians, singers and songwriters. Please watch the live-cast of the MAMAs on October 20th, right here on www.modestoview.com and experience the variety and watch live as the winners are announced. Our music community is so much more than our music, it is our network of friends that are the best anywhere. As our region was ravaged by fire, it was our music community that rallied to raise funds, play benefit shows both here in in the mountains, and collected much needed supplies and delivered them to the fire zone. I could not be any more proud to consider these folk my friends and
am so happy that we all can help. The music community here in Modesto is part of the fabric of our community and this is one of the reasons that Modesto is truly special and why we live here. Great things to do, places to be and amazing people. It really doesn’t get better. Thanks especially to Jennifer and Mike Allsup for always being there for everyone and we are happy to support them. ModestoView and Sierra Pacific are such great support for our city. This month is happening! The Northern California Women’s Music festival goes live from downtown Modesto October 23 and 24. There are a core group that have worked so hard, including Victoria Boyington, who besides being a mother of 8, is in three bands and is coordinating this festival. When we wanted our support and we were in and are proud to help bring Lita Ford to Modesto so that this weekend will be a celebration of women in music and a crucial part of our music community. On October 9th, we wrap up the One Purpose Scholarship fundraising program. We need to create a new generation of college educated kids that go to our local CSU Stanislaus and we need to create the jobs that keep them here in our region. We need the talent and the drive
of our next generation. If I haven’t reached out to you yet, please email me if you can make a contribution. You can help us change our community. Special huge October greetings to the local business that help make ModestoView possible. ModestoView lives because of our amazing ViewCrew that cares so much about our community. ModestoView has become the largest monthly magazine in our region because we are talking about the things that make our city good and because we have wonderful local businesses that want to make a difference. Do me a favor, please read through this issue and make sure that when you shop, you go to these places and support them. We all have to team up to show that Modesto is a great place to live. Please let me know what you like about ModestoView, and what we can do better. We want to be the resource you need for good Modesto living. Thanks Chris Murphy Publisher/Founder ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com
COVER STORY As the View Crew enjoys their favorite month, we find no better way to celebrate than paying tribute to and recreating those lovable hitch-hiking ghosts from Disney’s Haunted Mansion. Portraying these ghostly threesome on our cover are some of the men in the music metal scene in Modesto: Mike Vanek, our local promoter, Joseph Rush lead singer of Nothing but Losers, and Sean Walusko the lead singer of Zombie Death Stench . We like to thank Daydreams and Nightmare for costumes and their make-up crew Amber Marie Tomson and Holly Nichole for the amazing work! Look for their ad inside on their new location.

ello there Modesto! October is here and soon your homes will be surrounded by little kids dressed like Kim Kardashian and Donald Trump. These tiny wound-up bandits will be insistent that you give them sugary snacks to fuel their annual reign of terror. Stay firm and resolute. Don’t let the cute ones empty your bowl. I hope that everyone out there is doing well. I’m still alive here in front of my magic computer machine. At the moment my pet Chihuahua is looking at me like I have lost my mind because I gave her a few extra treats this morning. That makes her happy and keeps her off my lap while I try to type. Let’s talk street art - Modesto is hungry for art and I have proof (although completely unscientific) of this. I base my proof on the fact that we have received an absolute ton of positive engagement from content that we have posted featuring local artists and their work over the last month. It is evident that people love the color, style, grand size and raw talent that are combined to create some of the pieces that have popped up in Modesto over the last couple of years. The key in my opinion to the success of all this is good old-fashioned responsibility and respect. Nobody wants to walk outside and find spray-painted scribble on their fences and walls. That is always a bummer. What people like about the new art in Modesto is that much of it is done with permission. Boards have been put together. Artists have been scouted. Businesses have been given the chance to put their buildings on display. This is all incredibly organized for something that
comes down to an artist wielding a paintbrush or spray can with a crazed, dedicated look in their eye. And this is how it should be. If you are looking to get involved in the local street art movement, find the Classic Community Murals and Murals in Motown pages on Facebook. Send a message to the administrator of one or both pages expressing your interest. As it stands financial contributions are always needed along with volunteers, artists and ideas. If you have a vision of a 100 foot-tall Yoda painted on the side of the DoubleTree let it be known! You never know what might happen, right? I’m still trying to get the idea of a Chris Murphy mural painted onto the Gallo Center passed by a few key board members. Everyone needs a goal. Thanks to the big dogs at Peer Recovery Art, Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group, Wells Fargo Bank, Chris Ricci Presents and others for putting their wallets and hearts into making our city a more vivid and inviting place. This is a big deal folks. Art brings community together. Have a freakishly haunted Halloween and enjoy your families. Smile as often as possible. Be thankful that you live in such an awesome community. Contact me at ruben@modestoview.com or r.porras@me.com if you have story ideas or suggestions.

Fa l l i n t o D e s s e r t ! by Dana Johnson FB: Dana’s Family Kitchen FOX40: See Chef Dana every 1st Friday of the month
I tend to get a bit bummed out when I go to my favorite produce places and all of the juicy fruits of summer are scarce and temperatures start to cool. Yes, as much as I’ve enjoyed the past summer I must embrace the winds of change as I fall into dessert! Aaaah, as the season changes so do the local menus! Verona’s Italian Cucina is a prime example of where we can find the flavors of fall. They had me at pumpkin crème brulee! A little over a year ago Modesto View’s own Chris Murphy sent me to do a Chef View article at Verona’s. I had dined there before and like it quite a bit. Modesto View’s Jennifer Allsup joined me for her 1st time there, yep she was hooked! I got to spend a good amount of time with owners; Edwarda and (Executve Chef) Jaime Alderete, I love that we share the same passion for fine Italian food. I have been fortunate to occasionally do catering jobs for them. Edwarda’s sister, Rosemary has renewed my faith in old school hospitality as she is most efficient from beginning to end heading up the catering jobs. Jaime’s parents also work part time at the restaurant, making it oh so family friendly. So book now for the holiday season as we will travel to your home or business and provide you with amazing cuisine and stellar full service! Also, if you prefer the warm ambiance of the restaurant, again book in advance for the holidays as those reservations can fill up quick! Available via opentable.com where Verona’s received the Diner’s Choice Award, Congrats! See Yelp, too! No wonder Verona’s has been in business for 16 years when Chef Jaime is preparing so many seasonal specials alongside his traditional menu. If you are of legal drinking age, I suggest starting out with a fall flavor cocktail such as a chocolate or espresso martini, a café Verona, or an Italian Kiss! Hey, that’s a drinkie, not a direct invitation lol! Butternut squash soup from scratch will also be found on the fall menu. The entrees for fall are simply divine; Pumpkin ravioli, butternut squash ravioli, and osso buco is an Italian dish made with veal shank containing marrowbone, stewed in wine with vegetables and seasonings, so Dana~licious! Other popular specials are the portofolio chicken with chicken, smoked mozzarella, prosciutto, and
10
Recipe: pesto. Chicken mattone (brick cooked chicken) Brussel sprouts, bacon, spinach, and sweet potato puree. Try the linguini carbonara mad with guanciale (pork jowls, dried & cured!) white wine, cream peas on truffle poached eggs! Now that’s fine dining with Dana~licious style! Dessert! Oh Edwarda you have out done yourself and my waistline! Pumpkin crème brulee with house made sugar candy was yummy, the espresso panna cotta was a surprisingly ultrasmooth texture and flavor, and the caramel cheesecake with the apple compote, well, I’ll admit this, try and share it with me & it won’t be pretty! Enjoy these decadent fall desserts with a nice variety of cordials on the menu! Next time the Vin Santo poached pear is high on my list, too! What a delightful workday for me to find dear friends and local business owners, Carla and Greg Ciccerelli of Dream Dinners & Ciccerelli
Jewelers dining on a Monday afternoon with their daughter Alex (who also works in the family business) at Verona’s before they were going to take in a movie. They told me how they have followed Chef Jaime’s fine Italian cuisine for years. They also loved to be greeted by Edwarda, had Amanda as their outstanding server, and in the kitchen were 2nd Chef Daniel Antior, while Chef Jaime personally came over to the table to ensure everything was to their liking! That is Modesto service at its best! Modesto View’s signature question: Beatles or Stones was asked to Chef Jaime before and he gave me the wrong answer, so I decided to not chance it again! So, to be clear, “Dana~licious, Beatles or Stones?” Hands down, no brainer, all pure, without hesitation, and no doubt whatsoever… ROLLING STONES!!! (Publisher’s note: I detect a little Stones pressure of Chef Jaime?)
Dana~licious Pumpkin Pizza 1 ready made pizza dough tube 14 oz. canned pumpkin 1 peeled & thinly sliced apples 1 c. grated havarti cheese 2 tsp. all spice Roll out dough, spread pumpkin. Evenly distribute apples and cheese. Sprinkle all spice over pizza. Bake according to package directions. Optional: Top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream! Mmmm sooooo Dana~licious!

The Bluegrass Is Greener
O
by Aaron Rowan
ctober brings us much to celebrate in the northern California musical landscape. There’s the always phenomenal Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival at SF’s Golden Gate Park the first weekend of this month, and a stellar annual music conference in Mariposa county - the Yosemite Songwriting Retreat - the following weekend. I’m looking forward to soaking in a day or two of both of these weekend extravaganzas, and a whole lot of diverse music and arts offerings here at home. The ongoing Modesto Unplugged/ModestoView concert series ‘Live In The Cellar,’ held at Greens On Tenth, features two events this month. First up, on Friday 10/9, is something of a spinoff series called ‘The Bluegrass Is Greener.’ We’ll be featuring veteran bluegrass artist Kathy Kallick and her band, fresh off the release of their brand new album. Kathy has been leading bands in the traditional brand of West Coast bluegrass since 1975, and continues to evolve as one of the genre’s extraordinary composers and vocalists. She has won a Grammy and two IBMA Awards for her part on ‘True Life Blues: The Songs Of Bill Monroe.’ Concert starts at 8 PM in the cellar at Greens (953 10th St.) and admission is $20. Our goal is to make bluegrass a greater part of the Modesto Unplugged programming, so look for future offerings of top-notch California bluegrass talent soon. The following Friday, 10/16, we welcome the South Lake Tahoe duo of Anne Roos and Seán Cummings. Anne’s repertoire on the Celtic harp ranges from the expected - traditional Celtic, early Renaissance, folk, world and classical music - to the unexpected - Broadway standards, movie themes, country, classic rock and more. Seán Cummings, ‘The Tahoe Bagpiper,’ brings over 30 years performing experience and seven generations of clan tradition to play the music and tell the story of Scottish highland bagpipe. Doors open at 7 PM and music starts at 8. $15 general, $20 reserved front-row seating. Reservations can be made for both cellar concerts by calling us at 209-543-5306. Friday 10/2, local outlaw country songwriters Roy Dean and Chris Ward join forces with Sissy Brown (on tour from Oklahoma) for a lively evening at the Cow Track Lounge, 850 N. Yosemite Ave. in Oakdale, starting at 9 PM. Saturday 10/17, Townsend Opera presents Op-
era Remix: A Music & Verse Event, at the State Theater. It’s a unique live performance combining opera and slam poetry, featuring the Central Valley premiere of Philip Glass & Allen Ginsberg’s chamber opera ‘Hydrogen Jukebox,’ as well as performances of original work by Modestobased poets. Doors are at 6:30; performance at 7:30. An openmic afterparty will follow at 9:30. General admission ($10), reserved seating ( $25) and all-access passes ($75) are available through Townsend Opera at 209-523-6426. Sunday 10/18, the Sunday Afternoons At CBS series continues at Congregation Beth Shalom (1705 Sherwood Ave.) at 3 PM. Rabbi Shalom

celebration. We turn sweet 16! It is so crazy that some of the bands that are nominated, their members weren’t even born when Chris Ricci and I created the MAMAs way back in 2000. This is a celebration all musicians and bands and serves to created awareness of our amazing local music scene. Modesto has such a rich culture of music and we are really excited to add Latino Rock this year and hope to reach out more over the next few years. Music is one of the most exciting ways where our culture mixes, especially how many young Latinos are embracing the art and music of Rockabilly, a music that has it’s roots here in Modesto. This is just the start and we are stoked about where we are going. Modesto has amazing talent. As evidenced by the huge list of nominees in over 15 music genres, we are really fortunate to have these music makers in our area. We still have work to do. The Modesto Area Music Associate is a strong advocate for live music and works with the City of Modesto to encourage live music venues and music friendly polices. Music, culture and the arts make our city more desirable for young professionals, CEOS and other people who want to make Modesto their home or to visit. It is a vital part of our future economy and needs to be embraced and supported by local government and business. This is a key part of what is often

called “vibrancy”. This year, we celebrate the lifetime achievement of the Ratz. The Ratz were part of the 60s explosion here in Modesto. The central valley had great run of bands during the Summer of Love and Gary Grubb (Duncan) of the Ratz went on to lead Quicksilver Messenger Service and became one of the iconic bands around the world with hits well into the 70s with their mega hit Fresh Air. The Ratz still perform today and just recently performed a concert fundraiser for the George Rogers Park. Ratz member Patrick Durr is also in Homegrown, that was honored with the first Lifetime MAMA at the inaugural 2000 Awards show. The MAMAs are an evening of celebration and is unique that musicians, radio DJs, event promoters and venue operators of all genres gather to celebrate each other. The MAMAs will feature over 12 live performances and will present 23 awards at the State Theatre on October 20, beginning at 7 pm. Each MAMA winner receives the iconic Car Hop steel trophy designed by Becky Murphy and made by Beeler Industries. MAMA Awards are selected by the people and voting is open at www.modestoareamusic.com The MAMAs are not only a way to celebrate top performers, but to introduce the huge spectrum of music to the people of our region. Dr. Joseph F. Sheley President California State University Stanislaus By Chris Murphy
T
he central valley of California has been known for decades to be synonymous with hard work and values from agriculture, culture and education. CSU Stanislaus continues that theme by offering a world-class education mixed with the no-nonsense work ethic to produce outstanding students who are becoming tomorrow’s leaders. The campus is growing in enrollment and stature and is under the guidance of an excellent forward thinking President. An alumnus of Sacramento State, Joseph Sheley returned to his alma mater in 1996 after serving as a faculty member in sociology for 21 years at Tulane University where he also held the positions of chair of the Department of Sociology and faculty head of the University Senate. He holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Sheley was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from Sac State as the Distinguished Alumni Awards recipient in April 2012. In 2015, Money magazine ranked Stanislaus the No. 1 public university in the nation for helping students exceed expectation. These high marks in the Money magazine rankings mirror the U.S. News & World Report, which placed the University among the top 10 four-year schools in the country in serving Hispanic students. I am a proud CSU Stanislaus alumus (BCIS ’84) and fondly remember my college experience. I loved computer programming and coding, worked at Mom’s, enjoyed the school life, rode my bike to school and realized what a bang for the buck I got for my education. I hope that we can encourage more people to experience the value of a college education and our community needs to rally around our top ranked University. Smart cities and regions need a well-educated population. Let’s meet Joe Sheley. ModestoView: At what point in your life did you realize you wanted a career in education? Joseph Sheley: I got the bug during my senior year in college. I was lucky to have professors who were really engaged in their field, and I liked what I saw. They encouraged me to do graduate work, and thus began a long career.

To contribute to One Purpose, please visit www.csustan.edu/one-purpose and use Chris Murphy as team member Iheart MV: You see the gem that we have here with CSU Stanislaus, what do you think makes it so special in the network of CSU campuses? JS: Stanislaus State has been a gem for a long time, but it was a hidden gem. People are now beginning to realize that it a special place. A size and scale that promote individual growth, big enough to afford privacy, small enough to recognize the individual. A beautiful campus. A very good faculty and a dedicated staff. Most important: a university experience that provides the foundation for life and career. All CSUs do this, but we do it especially well. MV: CSU Stanislaus was ranked as the #1 university for exceeding expectations by Money Magazine; what does this mean to you and your team? JS: That honor is a huge source of pride. It means that we are doing more than offering a curriculum. Instead, we know that our students most often are the first in their families to attend college. They come to Stan State without the confidence and generational advice that more traditional students have. Our faculty and staff aim to build self-confidence and strength in the basics without cutting corners. That’s the
heart of the value-added Stan education for which we are ranked so high. MV: As a student, what do you think means most in their college experience at Stanislaus? JS: The quality of our academic experience is very high. But what puts us over the top is the opportunity for students, living on and off campus, to engage in the broader university life. All the research points to engagement as the key to success -- student government, music, athletics, residence life, clubs, peer mentoring, etc. Whatever the choice, growth, confidence, communication, social awareness, and organizational skills come from engagement outside the classroom. MV: Stanislaus has a unique combination of commuter students and those that live on campus, do you think that this enhances the experience for each kind of Student? JS: It is true that, technically, the majority of our students commute. But their experience is not drive-on, drive-off. They remain on campus throughout the day for both classes and nonacademic experiences. They study together,
work on extracurricular projects, socialize. In most ways, it is difficult to distinguish the commuter from the residential student. Few other universities achieve this as we do. MV: What are your key goals for the Stanislaus in the next five years? JS: Our focus is upon strengthening advising before as well as after students begin college. We want to work with our K-12 and community college partners to make sure that families understand that college is financially within reach and that, with early attention to the basics, their children can enter college truly ready to compete. This will help with our overriding goal: produce more college graduates for the region. MV: Attracting new students and keeping them in school is a very important goal, how does the One Purpose Scholarship program break new ground in this effort. JS: One Purpose affirms for our students that their hard work is understood and appreciated by our community. A One Purpose gift also represents an investment in the future of our region. Most of our students come from the region and likely will remain as part of an incredibly talented professional workforce that will attract business investment in the region. MV: If you had unlimited budget, what would be the one big thing you would bring to the Stanislaus Campus? JS: If I had to choose only one thing, it would be stronger attention to writing. Good writing skills encompass everything that an individual needs to make a difference in life and in employment: strong communication, critical thinking, economy, adaptability, nuance. The knowledge base matters, but employers really value the capacity to adapt and communicate. MV: When you are not leading your campus, describe your ideal day. JS: Getting away, spending time with my wife, Bernadette, watching baseball. MV: Beatles or Stones? JS: I like the Beatles.... but always the Stones.

Modesto Gospel Mission: A Beacon of Hope and Self-Improvement
Anyone can say they have a solution to the homeless problem, but it’s easy to forget that each individual and each family has their own problems, their own stories, that aren’t so simple to fix. Modesto Gospel Mission understands this, serving Modesto’s homeless community and taking the stance of empowerment, not enablement, to help the downtrodden back on their feet. What began as a soup kitchen in 1948, funded by one of the first Billy Graham Crusades, has evolved and expanded into what it is today: a shelter not funded by the government, but by faithful donors and fundraising events that offers programs most government-run shelters couldn’t dream of. Executive Director Kevin Carroll says the job is a calling, and that he’s happy to work in such a benevolent town. “It’s always been a giving city. I love Modesto; I love the community and what it has to offer.” Firefighter, probation officer, ambulance
By Nick Silva driver, past Director for the Teen Challenge program in Oakland, Kevin has spent his life raising the bar for civil service. Modesto Gospel Mission is raising the bar too, with a medical clinic, a year-round Children and Youth Center that’s open to the public, forklift, GED, and Food Safe certification programs that are also open to the public, an educational employment program, art therapy with Stanislaus Family Justice Center, and will soon have a dentist clinic, all within a one block radius. The Mission holds anywhere from 175 people a day up, with 30-day emergency shelters for men and women, a women and children shelter, and a shelter for fathers with children. They also have a new life program for people struggling with substance abuse and other issues, and a long-term 120-day program for people trying to obtain a job and get housing.
On Thanksgiving they gave jackets, scarves, and other winter clothing, along with Thanksgiving dinner enough for 1900 people, and on Christmas they had a line for gifts that stretched over ½ mile long. Those that stay at the shelter give back in their own way, making sure facilities are clean and even make jam in the Food Safe kitchen to raise money for the mission, and in return they get a clean change of clothes and sheets and three meals a day. Donors with special skills donate their time as well as money, helping tutor in educational programs and providing dental and medical services. The cycle of empowerment is evident, as 85% of their staff has come through their programs. All of this is sustained by the hearts and wallets of the community, with 144,000 volunteer hours logged last year alone, and fundraisers held year round, such as A Night of Hope Benefit Concert, featuring Dove Award nominated Danny Gokey. Danny Gokey is also the founder of Sophia’s Heart, a non-profit organization dedicated to
helping children and families who have been affected by poverty, sickness, broken homes and broken dreams. The concert is on Wednesday, October 28, at the Mary Stuart Rogers Theater inside the Gallo Center. Tickets are $25-$35 online at www.galloarts.org, or in person at the Gallo Center. Groups of 10 or more receive 15% off. The pre-show reception starts at 5:30pm, and includes a silent auction, and appetizers prepared by Modesto’s top chefs. The benefit concert will help fund the expansion of the Mission’s women and children shelter, which is according to Kevin, the growing population of homeless people in Modesto. Modesto Gospel Mission doesn’t have all the answers, and cannot singlehandedly solve the homeless problem in Modesto, but they are doing the best they can to impact the lives of those in need. “I have the best job in the world,” says Kevin, “because I get to see people come in and change.”

hen we think of ghost hunters, we usually think about groups going to truly haunted places like Alcatraz or the Winchester Mystery House, but Modesto boasts of it’s own ghostly haunts, too. There are rumors that there is a ghost who whispers in the McHenry Mansion, that there is a spirit who paces the Dry Creek Trail in mourning of the land, and the most interesting story is that strange things happen in Davis Park at exactly 3:33am. None of those could be confirmed by my own personal research, but I did meet some very cool people in my investigation of Modesto’s paranormal activities! Keith Clifton and his wife Pam, run the Nourishment for the Soul Wellness Center on Santa Barbara, in Modesto. Keith often helps spirits move on from this realm, and if they decide to stay, helps the spirit live harmoniously with the humans who come into contact with it. Although he doesn’t go “hunting” for ghosts necessarily, his spiritual work often brings him into contact with them. As a Master Reiki Practitioner, spirits seem to be drawn to him, and he does his best to help them be calm and find peace. He has cleared several residences in his time in Modesto, but none of them were the scary kind of ghosts we think of, but rather spirits likely lost, confused or attached to our world. For more information on his group, visit the Facebook page https://www. facebook.com/Nourishment-For-The-Soul-Wellness-Center. A few days later, I contacted the Ghost Hunting & Paranormal Research USA group. (Feel free to contact him on the facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ModestoGhostHunting). Ryan Privee runs the group and is a local psychic medium, who often finds himself communicating with those who have passed on. He has conducted many hunts over the years, mostly at local haunts like the cemeteries in Modesto and Ceres, and in Sonora, Sloughhouse Inn and most recently, Byron. He has also investigated the shop Daydreams and Nightmares, where he took this picture with a distinctive faint blue fuzzy blob over the chair. Looks like an apparition to me! He invited me to go to the Acacia cemetery in Modesto. I joined him on a Saturday evening at dusk to try to capture an apparition on film or a voice on an EVP, because his past hunts at Acacia have been successful. He took this picture of a tomb, with one random pink orb on the left side during one of this hunts there. After a few hours walking around Acacia, spending ample time at new gravesites with the recorder, we didn’t come up with anything concrete, though on two recordings there were muffled noises. One on recording we asked the young gentleman how he died, and we think we heard the word “driving”, and the other was what sounded like a little girl humming a song. We also captured what may or may be an apparition on the right side of this tombstone. What do you think?! Goodnight Moon by Sam Pierstorff
Award winning ninja poet and MJC English Professor and Poet Laureate- ModestoView
From outside the window, it must look like a crime is underway: late night, shades drawn, scattered light flickering like fireflies inside the room. But it’s only my son lighting up every storyboo page with his new flashlight and stabbing my eyes with the sun-end of his plastic torch. His aim is poor and the light skims the walls, ceilings, zips across the carpet like a swooping hawk. We’re near the end of Goodnight Moon, where the old lady whispers “hush,” and he lights her up— the old matronly mouse rocking in her chair— a comb, a brush, a bowl full of mush within reach on her end table. Then the picture book darkens as night grows older and not even his new turtle-head flashlight can brighten these pages enough to stop the slow fall of his eyelids past his eyes like the moon eclipsing the sun.

Less Tricks, More Treats by Nick Silva
Halloween is a time of ghoulishness and scares, but there are still some scares you want to avoid. That’s why we at Modesto View want to help you and your family have the safest trick-or-treating experience you can, with our list of 10 dos and don’ts on All Hallows Eve.
Have an adult. It’s always safer to have some adult supervision from a parent or guardian, at the very least to prevent their candy from being stolen by those pesky ne’er-do-wells next door (you’re not getting me this year!) Safety in numbers. If your kids do go trick-or-treating without supervision, it’s much safer to go out in a pack than to go alone. Make sure you know who they’re going with, you don’t want your own younglings turning into ne’er-do-wells themselves! Avoid unlit houses. The porch light is the universal signal for trick-or-treating participation. If the light is off, more than likely they’ve run out of candy or they’re just not in the Halloween spirit. Even if the house is well lit, never go inside. Stick to the sidewalk. Just because you’re dressed as the Man of Steel, doesn’t mean you can take steel head on! Carry a flashlight. It’s best to have some sort of light when you’re walking around in the dark so drivers can avoid squishing you. If you’re wearing all dark clothing, you should have something reflective, such as shoes made for night jogging, or even reflective tape visibly on yourself. Test makeup. Before you lather your whole face in costume makeup, be sure to put a small amount somewhere on you to make sure your skin won’t react negatively. You also want to wash it off before you go to bed. Wear costumes that fit. Loose clothing and masks that are hard to see out of are a tripping hazard. It’s better to get your costume early to make sure it all fits than to wait until the 30th looking like a ragamuffin (unless that’s what you’re going as.) Be aware of your surroundings. Avoid open flames of any kind, such as lit candles, and try to wear flameresistant clothing unless your costume is Joan of Arc. Obstructing your vision with a full-ace mask is never a good idea. Avoid dangerous accessories. Sometimes the most dangerous thing on Halloween can be yourself! Make sure swords, knives, and other sharp objects are made of soft, flexible materials, and aren’t at liberty to poke an eye out. No open candy! If it’s been opened or appears to have been tampered with at all, you don’t want to eat it. And as tasty as those homemade goodies look, never acccept anything that wasn’t bought in the store. There are some dangers in the world, but that shouldn’t stop you and your family from getting your annual Halloween sugar rush. That itself can be dangerous too, so be sure dole out the candy sparingly to save your family’s health and teeth. Make sure you follow our list for a safe Halloween, and we hope you yield the largest candy harvest possible.

blows into town on Saturday, Oct. 10, with the return of Omega Nu’s Fourth Annual Halloween Home Tour. Guests will have the opportunity to tour three Modesto homes, full of spooktacular décor and boutique shopping in the courtyard of one home. The tour, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will feature Halloween treats, but no scary tricks. Guests can tour at their leisure, with several rooms at each of the bootifully decorated homes and outdoor décor on display. Last year’s Halloween Home Tour raised $6,500, and 100 percent of the proceeds benefitted local charities supported by Omega Nu. Combined with other funds raised through the year, Omega Nu typically distributes approximately $65,000 to Stanislaus County charities each June. Other events include the Christmas Home Tour, Fashion Show and a May concert with Tim Flannery and the Lunactic Fringe.

Hello everyone! October
is here and it’s time to play dress up. There are some great shows this month too, but first let me remind you that every Thursday at Garlic Brothers in Stockton you can check out the Blues Jam, hosted by Jeramy Norris & the Dangerous Mood. Always fun, and it’s and a great way to meet other musicians and music lovers alike. They have a great menu and a view of the sunset that is to die for. On Friday the 2nd, Jeramy Norris will be at Royce Farms BBQ in Stockton starting at 6 pm. If you haven’t seen these guys in action, you really need too. On Saturday the 3rd, take a trip to the Country Club Saloon in Loomis to see Henry Gray & Lazy Lester live. Henry Gray has a career spanning 7 decades. He has shared the stage with such greats as Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, and the Rolling Stones, and is considered to be a legend in his own right. Lazy Lester is a master harmonica player and has written songs that have become blues and rock standards like “You Hear Me Knockin.’” They will be joined by Sacramento blues man Kyle Roland for what I’m sure will be a great day for everyone
Jeramy Norris & the Dangerous Mood involved. Then on the 24th, Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame will be up in Jamestown at the Gypsy Shack for a night of blues in the hills. This will mark our first time playing in Jamestown. As a fan, I have been to the Shack many times, and I can tell you first hand that it’s a great place to spend an evening and I do hope you can make it. Lastly, I would like to share a little bit about the best Halloween party I have been to at the Prospect Theater on K St in downtown Modesto, hosted by the Wrong Doers. They have prizes for best costume and the dancing just doesn’t stop. So make your plans early and get yourself on the list for a real good time. Have fun this fall everyone, I hope to see you all out at a show soon! Fri Oct. 2nd, Jeramy Norris & The Dangerous Mood, Royce Farms BBQ, Stockton, 6:00 pm Sat Oct 3rd, Kyle Rowland Blues Band w/ Henry Gray & Lazy Lester, Country Club Saloon, Loomis, 3:00 pm Sat Oct 24th, Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame, Gypsy Shack, Jamestown, 9 pm

For the music and the MAMAs. by Ken White “Light My Fire” “Light My Fire.” The winter of ‘67. The flip side of the awakening. The Doors playing at a roller skating rink in Modesto. Not wanting to be there on a dark Central Valley night. The opening act was a good friend’s band, the Kitchen Sink. Five teen wanna-be’s with a good sound. On the inside, Jim Morrison was smoking and sultry. On the outside, two gangs of hoods were beating the hell out of each other. I thought about the old and the new; one living, one dying, in 4/4 time.
“Magic Mountain” “Goodbye and Hello.” The summer of ’67. Tim Buckley backed by Carter C.C. Collins on congas and percussion. KFRC Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Music Festival at Mt. Tamalpais in Marin. A benefit for the Hunters Point Child Care Center. The first “official” outdoor rock concert. The inaugural event of “The Summer of Love.” For two bucks, 15,000 of us witnessed the Byrds, the Jefferson Airplane, Sons of Champlin, Captain Beefheart, and Merry-Go-Round. Hell’s Angels on hogs directed traffic. “TransLove Buslines” shuttled folks from the parking lot to the open-air amphitheatre. We knew we could change the world with words like peace and freedom. I wondered if I should wear flowers in my thinning hair.

“Long Time Gone” “Long Time Gone.” November 1969. A foggy San Francisco day. The Polo Grounds at Golden Gate Park. The Moratorium to End the War in Vietnam. My first taste of revolution, of defiance, of togetherness. 125,000 people looking for a reason to believe. Rock ‘n roll riding point. CS&N wearing those furry coats. Stills pounding out “For What It’s Worth.” They wandered among the people after their set. I remember walking by them and thinking how short they were.

I saw John’s last show with Richard Smith and Francesco Buzzuro, duo world class guitarists playing in an intimate garden party with good crowd, and heard good things about the show of Slim Man who played the Barkin’ Dog Grill to a good crowd so we hope we have not heard the last of John’s efforts on the music front. It’s Marisa Seaman’s (senior) first Downey production and is incredibly excited about this cast. “It’s a lot of work, but completely worth it because of the memories we make and the finish product that we put together”, Marisa says. Downey is known for their amazing theatre program and the students work for that title. “Our cast is very loud funny and there are lots of big personalities that mix together really well”, she continues. You can see Marissa as Julia Gibbs and August on October 16, 17, 23, and 24th at 7:30 and October 25 at 2:30 at Downey High School. I will be at every production for sure so make sure to stop by and say hello to me! Hope to see you there. Enjoy the Silence by Mary Layton
The first time I experienced silence consciously was when I was 12 years old. I was walking through a beautiful forest with my 16 years old brother. It made me feel special that he chose to take me on a walk with him. I was talking excitedly thinking that I needed to be “interesting” so that he would ask me to go for a walk with him again. He turned to me and said: “Hey, let’s try something new. Let’s be quiet and enjoy the silence. Silence is something very precious.” For a while I felt embarrassed, but then I noticed that walking silently with my brother was really cool and comfortable. The sensory experience of the forest and me and my brother in it in an instant became huge and wonderful: the light falling through the
22
trees, the smell of wood and pine needles, the noises of the birds and the sound of our feet touching the soft forest floor. It made me feel more mature and closer to my brother. Today I know that silence is a great source of strength. You may have experienced something like this. The peaceful look of a cat or dog sitting quietly – can we find such peace? What does it take? Taking time out, away from noises and distractions, away from words will make the mind quieter. Having a little quiet time can come in so many ways. Watching and being in nature, gardening, being creative and certainly having a regular practice of meditation, T’ai Chi or yoga in your life – all these are good ways to enjoy the silence. involved in a wonderful production called “Our Town”. Thomas Downey High School and our lovely director, Mr. Johnson are putting this show on. It is a production about life, love, family and growing up in the early 1900’s. If you saw either of Downey’s productions from last year, you probably remember August Eppler (Senior) from his amazing performances as Conrad Birdie in Bye-Bye-Birdie or as Orin Scrivello (The Dentist) in Little Shop of Horrors. August says that through Downey Drama, he has become more confident in everyday situations and a great public speaker. You can come see August kill another role as Charles Webb this month. Downey Drama and Mr. Johnson have given many students an automatic family and an incredible High School experience. Downey has sadly lost a couple of programs due to lack of funds but by coming and seeing our productions, you will be helping our program thrive forever. If you can make it to the first weekend of performances, do it because I guarantee that you will want to come back the following weekend. It is said that high school students can’t do this pro-

egardless of what your preferred sport is, fitness injuries go along with being part of the game, especially if you are runner. I personally have had more fitness injuries from running than in any other leg of a triathlon. Last May, I took note of a fellow runner, Anne M. Kelley, who took the over-all female division at Rina’s Run 1/2 marathon. At 57 years young, she is a running force to be reckoned with. For Anne, competitive running has been a big part of her life since the age of 23. She’s had more than a few accomplishments, such as her lifetime best race that happened at the 1991 Twin Cities Marathon in Minneapolis-St. Paul, where she ran a 2:42:50 to qualify for the Olympic marathon trials. It seems that Anne was born to run. “I just like the way it feels,” said Anne through an email conversation. “I was born with a distance runner’s bone structure and physiology, and running feels very natural to me. I’m a lousy
off my training for a week to many months off with no running at all. I’ve been injured at least once pretty much everywhere from my toes to my hips, but have never yet (knock on wood!) had a significant knee problem.” Anne has had a terrific stretch of training and racing this year, from March through her recent injury that happened in July, as she prepared to attempt her first full marathon since 2004. Like I mentioned before, Anne is a smart runner, and I have no doubt in my mind that she will return soon to the racing field even stronger, faster and more re-energized than the Bionic Woman. Singles and couples welcomed. All music selected will be danceable. You definitely will enjoy the music and requests will be honored.

athlete at any sport that requires power, quickness, or coordination, but running feels like something that I can do well.” According to Anne, when healthy, she normally runs every day for about 10 miles, with most of it at an easy pace, and 15 miles when training for half marathons. Note the key word here is “healthy,” including injury free. On July 5th, Anne injured an Achilles tendon, and since then she hasn’t been able to run very much. As a runner myself, this is more than heart breaking, but Anne is a much smarter runner than I. She actually has the discipline, unlike me, to know when to stop and heal verses when I keep going till I drop. It’s true, I’ll keep going no matter what, even if it pains me, and this is why my injuries last a bit longer than normal. So my advice is don’t do as I do, but more so as Anne does. “Most years I have one or more injuries,” said Anne, “depending on how you define an injury—anything from needing to back

Something new has landed in Modesto. It is called ,
“The Portal”
This is a special space in time that will be home to music events, large and small in a vintage warehouse near MJC. This is the brainchild of Uncle Lonny Davis. He has been doing music events to raise funds for his Hope Haven West and other deserving projects to fund wheelchairs to central and south America. Big stage, big space, lots of parking and of course the giant portal mural by Andy Davis. The Portal will launch with a private party featuring headline bands, our own Jon “Doc Brown” Camp and a special DeLorean. Are you curious? Ready for a new era of music in Modesto? Be at the Portal Oct 21. There will be a parade from downtown Modesto to the Portal at Tully & Caldwell. More info at www.modestoview. com as we get close to launch.
