amazing, the smells, the tastes and the cool breezes. This is the turn, it’s the transition from a hot summer to a nice cool fall. There is this fall freshness, the smell of fall gets intense, with fall cooking, farmer’s markets, and the menus at restaurants change too, flipping over to the cold weather foods. Anything with butternut squash is at the top of my list and dare I say it; Pumpkin Spice but I love the smell of warm apple cider. It is good for my heart too now that it has been shocked back into shape. But friends, Modesto is under attack from a pair of TV shows about Scott Peterson (further known as “he who will not be named”) Modesto is taking a beating so
a bunch of TV execs make money off of us. What do we do? We stay “Modesto Strong” and show that our community is so much more than the news. We are better and we need to spread the word. That is why I started ModestoView back in 1997 so that we know about the good in our community. We have fantastic neighborhoods, great community events, true volunteer inspiration, team-work, dining that rivals anywhere, arts and culture that make us proud and friends and family that support each other. This is the real Modesto. Let’s spend this time together, promoting each other and our lives with positive information and activities. When I meet people, and they say, “Modesto, isn’t that where……” and I cut them off and say “George Lucas. Yes, we are the home of American Graffiti and the birthplace of Star Wars”. It is amazing how differently the conversation goes after that. You can do it to. Say no to trolling, negativity and celebrate the people and events that try to make a positive difference. So let’s get back to why I love October. For me, this is ROCKTOBER! The MAMA Awards will be at the State Theatre on October 10. Chris Ricci and I had a vision in 2000, to celebrate the local music with all of the style and the ceremony of the Grammy awards and show that our local music talent is special and that they are appreciated. This is truly an evening where
Modesto View Wins Hermes Creative Awards Gold!
We are so very honored that ModestoView Magazine as won Gold at the annual Hermes Design Awards for 3 years in a row. It is so very exciting that our locally produced magazine with a mission to “Serve Civic Pride Daily” took top national honors. Thanks to all of our ViewCrew writers and to the amazing design duo of Peter Grimaldi and Photo Artist Michael J Mangano for these amazing creative skills. Hope you enjoy what we are doing.
the entire music industry comes together, all genres, all radio stations and all of the promoters. This year, the celebration continues and we honor Modestan Michael Allsup of Three Dog Night, who through all these years of global tours, gold and platinum records, continues to live here. We salute all of the 200 nominees and hope that you will all vote at www. modestoareamusic.com and tune in to ModestoView to watch the show live. Most importantly, fall is the time for family. We are all busy, so many fund raisers and events, but nothing is more important than being a family. Our door is always open to our kids and we are so lucky that Madison and Ryan like to stop by and that we get to visit Berkeley regularly for Abbey and love our Cal Football. Our patio has become a great place to spend a fall evening. Best of all this month? Halloween! This is a national holiday at our house and we hope you will stop by our haunted home for some trick or treat. Can’t wait for the spooking to begin. Thank you Modesto friends for having a local business, creating a local event, painting a local picture, recording a local song as we are all the richer because you do and ModestoView is here to help spread the word of your good efforts. Thank you and Happy Haunting, Chris Murphy Founder & Publisher – ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com

With a twitch of her nose, our amazing daughter Madison Murphy Leupp transforms into a bewitching beauty. She is truly a magical woman that lights up a room when she walks in and we are so very proud of her. With a nod to the vintage TV show, we celebrate all of our haunted happenings and this enchanting spooky season. We celebrate our many Halloween memories as a family and look forward to so many more. Thanks to Michael J Mangano for bringing so many of our crazy ideas to life.

NON PROFIT United Cerebral Palsy Safari Dash: Life Without Limits By Brandilyn Brown Do you live a life without limits? Do you often think about what that means? I met a precious group of people whose lives are dedicated to breaking limits. Can you imagine a world where disabilities didn’t stop anyone from living a rewarding, happy and productive life? United Cerebral Palsy has had a center here for 30 years. I recently heard about them and wow, do they have a story to tell. UCP’s adult day centers in Modesto and Turlock work hard every day to create lives without limits for its members. Cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injuries, mobility injuries, autism and many other disabilities of other diagnosis can pause lives, but UCP is making sure those pauses are short. Only 20% of their members are affected by cerebral palsy; they assist anyone affected by mobility issues, regardless of the biological cause. Every day they hope to enrich the lives of their members by giving them independence--the kind you and I take for granted every day. Many of us have daily opportunities to make memories, make money, make new friends, and experience something new. Can
you imagine NOT having those experiences every day? The instructors at UCP strive to create stimulating environments to benefit members and encourage them to try something new. Aside from the day center, they have a program called Expanding Horizons, which is devoted to doing just that by integrating something new directly into their lives. Field trips of various kinds bridge the gap between mundane and exciting, making every day an adventure. Recent trips include bowling, visiting parks and beaches, volunteering efforts, going to San Francisco and taking the ferry to Alcatraz, and even camping. UCP has partnered with Tuolumne Trails, who have adapted common outdoor camp shenanigans like hiking and swimming for anyone to enjoy, regardless of physical limitations! Their job placement program gives their members a sense of independence and self that only comes through employment. They can place members with a job coach to assist them in fields such as janitorial, landscaping or cooking, which make them feel like productive members

ART WALK
Trick or Treat By Jim Christiansen Trick or Treat! I haven’t got a lot of ghoulish or zombie apocalypse to add to our Modesto View, except to suggest some theme like that for October Art Walk. So far, the new format has included Clue Mystery, Pirates, and Rockabilly, so stop in to find out what happens this month on October 19. And in case some Art Walk spot seems dark, dank, even though on your route, check and see if you have the new semi-annual map. www. modestoartwalk.com Look up for Extempore, the pop up Artist Alley bar. Mistlin Gallery continues its juried Autumn Art Festival show this month. Art Work is for sale, but you can see half a bicycle in mid-air, or Eva Haas’ portrait of Steve Bannon, and more in this big fundraiser show of the year. And check out fall workshops and classes. You don’t need a costume, nor the model either to attend the weekly Wednesday night life drawing group in the Mistlin studio area, 7 to 9 pm. Fee is $10 a session. Bring treats at your peril, or contact Jack Morris for more information for joining the model schedule or letting you in the door to draw, paint, or sketch to a live model. The Cake Walk shoe still up at Chartreuse Muse with some Fall expected changes celebrating of 15 years in business. The Muse also has fall classes, located down on Tenth Street. Over at Barking Dog, Dawn Wagner “Hollywood” art will replace the continuing show by Margaret Ritchey, changing over at October Art Walk. At Carolyn Huff Photography, George Balliet is the featured artist. George describes his art as “pareidolia” which he defines “the mind perceiving a familiar pattern of something, where none actually exists.” That seems spooky enough to visit. And if it isn’t, Brian Swander has art up at Preservation Coffee. Trick or Treat, collect some drink and goodies while you’re out. The Harvest Festival shows up Friday, October 14, downtown Modesto. This annual event features local artists, many of Modesto Artist Salon, crafters, vendors, food, and fun. That one is a full day event. That same weekend I am holding my annual Birthday Open Studio at my house on Bodem Street, where Bodem and Sunrise split, with some sale pricing as there is a lot, and I’d like to see my art get home. And I’m just past deadline

It is fall and you know what that means? Great drinks made with Do Good Bourbon. To make it even better’; How about some bacon? Yes, it is true, bacon makes everything better, even a premium whiskey. Our friends at Ralston’s Goat have created a savory new flavor that will really make you feel like it is fall, where the tastes are amazing. Our friends at Do Good Distillery have taken craft spirits to a whole new level where even those that may not like a bourbon whiskey, can now fall in love with it. Bartenders Sean Koehn and Jennifer Allsup and created something that will make you fall in love with fall. Oh, did we mention it has DoGood Bourbon and bacon? We thought so.

Sake and Sushi
Ah, finally, it’s fall! California is cooling down, leaves are falling, and we are back to a two-day-a-week watering schedule (for those of us that water at all!). If you are sick of literally pumpkin spice flavored everything, we have the perfect drink for you. Brandon Dodge, owner and head bartender of Kimoto Sake & Sushi, Modesto’s Japanese pub, invented a special cocktail to commemorate the best season of all. It’s aptly named the “Tsukimi” after the Japanese Fall Festival. Made with 12-year Suntory Yamazaki whiskey, apple cider, a dash of cinnamon, and garnished with a luscious red apple skin, it’s the best fall drink we’ve ever had. It was so delicious we had to have two! Order it all month long at your local izakaya (“stay in sake shop”), enjoying every sip while it lasts.

PERFORMANCE A Time to Perform in October By Kaye Osborn and Chris Murphy Many of you know that I am a retired teacher
of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing plus I teach American Sign Language at Modesto Junior College. I love going to the theater and am especially excited when certified interpreters interpret the show. The interpreters work hard to convey the meaning of the words or music. They certainly enrich the theatrical experience for the audience both Deaf and hearing. When a venue learns there will be Deaf in the audience, they contact me to help them connect with the certified interpreters. I applaud their efforts in providing qualified interpreters that will make the experience rewarding and enjoyable for the Deaf audience members. Imagine the disappointment, if someone who is not certified attempts to translate a production. The Deaf audience is disheartened and most likely will never attend another show at that venue plus the word goes out within the Deaf community that the venue did not provide certified interpreters. Many theatrical venues are offering Open Captioned shows so that you can follow the script while watching a show. Shorenstein shows in San Francisco and Ashland Shakespearian Festival are offering Open Captioned shows for those audience members with hearing losses. If you attend a show with certified interpreters, please, applaud their efforts by waving your hands in the air. They will appreciate the recognition.

Loving Luigi’s October is when baseball ends and football becomes front and center. So what goes well with both? Pizza! There are a lot of pizza places, but we love the local places and decided to dive right in. Local pizza places come and go, but rarely do they stand the test of time when it comes to the three things I look for when eating at a restaurant. I look for taste, quality, and customer service! Well, Luigi’s Pizza, owned and operated by Pete Warda, surpassed every one of my tests – and with flying colors! The food was excellent and after I complemented him on the fact that his Luigi’s Pizza Facebook Page has almost 20,000 followers, eventually, I was able to get the camera shy owner to take a photo with me for the article. Not only does Luigi’s Pizza pass all of my personal tests, but this local Modesto Pizzeria has also earned Yelp’s 2016 and 2017 “Most Loved Pizza Award!” Yelp CEO, Jeremy Stoppelman, signed certificates for both years and you can find them hanging on the wall inside. Luigi’s cooks their pizza in a brick oven with only 100% fresh ingredients! Here’s a little fun fact about Luigi’s Pizza as well: The brick oven that cooks your delicious pizza has been at that exact location, for 50 years now! As always, I brought along my Modesto View photographer and friend, Michael “MJ” Mangano. When Pete shared with us that the oven had been there for the past 50 years, MJ said, “Wow, imagine how many pizzas have been cooked in that oven through the years!” I nodded in agreement and I felt a little nostalgic as well. Pizza is tricky and people have strong

opinions on whether they consider it fattening or healthy. Honestly though, it depends on who you ask. Pizza consists of a high portion of bread and some consider that - BAD. However, pizza also contains a large volume of vegetables and most consider that – GOOD. Either way, a lot can be said about a woman who is willing to sit down and not be fearful, when it comes to the number of calories that may enter her body in one sitting. That’s right folks; I am not afraid to own up to my “stuff!” So, with that being said, I will admit to the fact that I sat down at Luigi’s Pizza with my two children and literally demolished an entire pizza, a few chicken wings, some of their famous garlic stuffed cheesy bread balls, and their calzone! I ate ALL that food in one sitting and I don’t feel bad about it - not even a little! If you know me, then you are well aware that I am in no way a Skinny Minnie! So I definitely had no problem enjoying every single morsel and mouthful of the food we ordered! Words cannot describe the way each bite fused an abundance of flavor together, soothing and satisfying each and every one of our taste buds! In between bites and smile-filled conversation, I asked Pete our signature question, “Beatles or Stones?” He answered, “Beatles, because, well, they are THE BEATLES!” For the record, and just in case you’re concerned about the massive amounts of pizza I consumed and/or my health, after I unapologetically overindulged on the best pizza, chicken, and cheese bread I have ever had, you will be happy to know: I did top off my fat-filled meal with one of Luigi’s scrumptious salads!
Of course, I could only eat two bites of it.

MAMA Awards 2017 - MAMA is HERE!
By Chris Murphy We are so very excited about the 2017 MAMA Awards hosted by the State Theatre on October 10 at 6:30 pm. Since 2000, we have been celebrating the best in Modesto area music. We celebrate the venues, the events and the people that make the local music community shine. The Modesto Area Music Association is now a non-profit organization so we will be better equipped to help promote, develop and present our local talent and make sure that our local industry is professional and ready for the world of music. Chris Ricci and I had a vision in 2000, to celebrate the local music with all of the style and the ceremony of the Grammy awards and show that our local music talent is special and appreciated. This is truly an evening where the entire music industry comes together, all genres, all radio stations and all of the promoters. This year, we celebrate the legendary accomplishment of Michael Allsup of Three Dog Night. Through the course of his career, that has landed 7 Gold and 1 Platinum album, with global success with a band that is still touring today, Michael Allsup has called Modesto home. Who says you can’t rock the world and live in Modesto USA. There will be a tribute of his music. Ken Riddick will be presenting the award to Michael Allsup who will be in attendance. The MAMAs will also feature a special tribute to the musicians we lost in 2017: Kevin Garcia of Grandaddy, Penny White of the Sensations, and Evin Yagegar of the Barking Dog Café. Live music makes a city vibrant, exciting and makes it a place where people want to live and work. The MAMAs are more than just an award show, they are a night where we all work together to build our live music system, encourage the support of our city and county and make a statement that Modesto USA is a creative musical city. Please take time to vote. Since 2001, we have had a home at the fabulous historic State Theatre of Modesto, celebrating on a stage in this beautiful 1934 theatre. This is MAMAs house. This year, the talent is even better, the crop of 22 categories of nominees is amazing and the sound production and the songwriting is better than ever.
The show begins at 6:30 pm and will be live broadcast on ModestoView.com

UNPLUGGED A Moon With A View Welcome to the fall season, friends in music.
October Movies
Magic continues to fill the moon-house this month at Modesto’s newest concert home. Moon & Sixpence Music And Art House can be found at 500 S. 9th St. between E and F, nestled back in the courtyard. Doors for all concerts open half an hour prior, and it’s cash only at the door. Here’s what October has in store for us in this intimate listening space. Minor Birds blend classical piano, guitar, standup bass, and various instruments with a modern twist of dramatic indie pop and a touch of goth and grunge, seeking to create original compositions and weave tales that are otherworldly yet familiar to many. Saturday 10/7, 7:30 PM, $10. The Hollands are a full-time internationally touring family with a knack for engaging audiences and rousing a singalong. They are 21st century nomadic travelers frolicking in the organic folk revival scene. 10/8, 3 PM, $15. Subur-
by Aaron Rowan ban Paradise (formerly The High Voltage Band) are a pop-punk band from Ripon, CA making their own unique style of rock. The trio was chosen to perform on the 2015 Vans Warped Tour and chosen as a finalist to perform on The Hard Rock Cafe’s 2017 San Francisco Battle of the Bands. Friday 10/13, 8 PM, $5. Finnish folk duo Vellamo crafts ethereal folk-pop with gorgeous vocals and memorable melodic hooks, combining a love and vast knowledge of Finnish folk music with the western singersongwriter tradition in a unique and beautiful way, and creating an exotic and magical acoustic experience. Saturday 10/14, 7:30 PM, $10. Blending the harmonic innovations of jazz with the melodic resonance of folk, Max Hatt & Edda Glass evoke a world that stretches from the beaches of Rio de Janeiro to the prairies of the American west, leaving audiences with a feeling both light and deep. Sunday 10/22, 3 PM, $15. Willy Tea Taylor’s remarkable ability to sing about profound subjects in a simple way makes his songs a great place to lose yourself in well-written lyrics, alluring melodies, and a voice that ties them together with emotion as deep as the artist’s own roots. Opening act Mia Edsall is a songwriter from Bellevue, Idaho, playing guitar, 5-string
clawhammer style banjo, and accompanying herself on harp. Wednesday 10/25, 7 PM, $10. The W Lovers share a cultured blend of alt country and Americana that rings of rustic small towns and makes the listener feel warm and at home. Opening act The Darcys are a Modesto duo playing acoustic folk and Americana music - a mixture of original songs along with some covers (both obscure and more well-known.) Friday 10/27, 7 PM, $15. Harpist Erica Messer combines classical prowess and popular music arrangements in performances both beautiful and boundary-pushing. She has traded in Fauré for Fleetwood Mac and Beethoven for the Beatles. Her fellow harpist Ella Jenkins is a songwriter with blues, Celtic, folk and pop influence. Saturday 10/28, 7:30 PM, $10.
ROCKABILLY MAMAs Are Coming by Jennifer Allsup Place your votes now before it’s too late. There are so many categories to pick your favorite bands and venues. Rockabilly is our music Modesto and this category is special as Rockabilly was born here in 1938, thanks to the Maddox Brothers and Rose. We celebrate this music today and are proud of these nominees. It seemed just yesterday, we where honoring KC “Don Juan” Maddox at the MAMA Awards. This year’s nominees for Rockabilly stem from across the 209 as many other categories. From Stockton to the Foothills and beyond to Merced. Polyester Wags from Stockton . Playing true country with a rockabilly twist. Five members that are making an honest living entertaining the masses. Johnny Devil and his Sins living in the foothills

of Sonora Ca. Bringing you outlaw country and rockabilly mixed together. Johnny Devil and his Sins can be found on Hi-Ho Silver Records. Heebie Jeebies brings a dark mix to the rockabilly music scene that they call Hell country, shoegazing western songs that break your heart. Rockin’ Rick and the Rhythm Wranglers another foothill favorite. Recently Rockin’ Rick signed with another record label out of the L.A. area and leaving his record company Hi-Ho Silver Records. It’s all about the Wild Records Company that will help them spread their all American 50’s rock n roll. Little Johnny and the Sleepwalkers out of the Merced area. Putting the hard side of rocka-
billy and making that fast paced psychobilly sound. Voodoo Killer bring it home start from their roots of Modesto, Escalon and Oakdale Ca. Voodoo Killer is new to the MAMA’s this year. But, these gentlemen and their bluesy graveyard rockabilly style is not a stranger to them. All the members have been in different bands. Playing different styles. Now they are one and man they kick butt. Greasehound, the boys from Patterson are a strong wind of psychobilly. They have performed all over the place. Richard Romero the front man is a designer as well. Making art for their band and other adventures. Some might call their type of rockabilly a surf rock of sorts. I suggest you check them all out on-line and place your vote for the 2017 Modesto Area Music Awards. Voting will end very soon. MAMA night is Oct 10th at the State Theatre so place your votes before it is to late. Voting ends at midnight Oct 8

METAL
by Eve Oberlander
October is upon us, my
favorite month of the year because of the Modesto Area Music Awards and our city’s downtown live music Halloween celebration, The Summoning. First off I’d like to congratulate each metal MAMAnee for best metal 2017. Each band deserves to be nominated because of several important reasons. To name a few, I’d say each MAMAnee has an album, EP or is currently recording an album or about to release said album within the next few months. This is a big deal. Bands put in so much effort to produce an album from start to finish. This takes a ton of time, practice, work and money to make it possible. The bands MAMAnated have put in a ton of work in general, booking gigs with National Acts, touring, writing, recording and promoting all while attending each other’s gigs and showing support for each other. That’s special and so METAL. Who’s going to win? We will find out on October 10th. Good luck to Bavmorda, Cursed, Stigmurder, 17TEN, Nothing But Losers, Hang the Kode, Symbolik, Accidentally Murdered, Lost Horizons, and HellHeart. This year, The Summoning, downtown on October 28th will have two heavy metal stages brought to you by Beyond the Limits Promotions and
Asylum Productions. The Summoning is a Halloween block party with 12 stages and cash prizes for best costume. The Hellraiser stage features: Echoes of the Forgotten, Painting Chaos, Lost Horizons, WHITEWOLF, From Devastation, Who Wants The Crown, and Diversity of One. The Carnevil Stage features Stigmurder, Sexy Zombie, Nexdeus, Mind Of A Machine, Hard Knox, Sir Corruptor, AGE, Ununoctium and Power of Pain. Farmers Markets are more than just places to pick up fresh produce and other market foods. Cities with real farmer’s markets are magnets for chefs, great restaurants and a population that values fresh foods and cooking. It says good things about a community that has a vibrant Farmer’s Market. The Modesto Certified Farmer’s Market is a weekend must-do event and it’s a good chance you will see all of your friends, hear some great music, learn some great recipes. And for sure, take fantastic locally grown tastes home. Let’s get to know Marie. Originally from Philadelphia, Marie Uber found Modesto and boy are we lucky. Marie and Dennis Uber have really made Modesto a tasty place. In addition to being parents and grandparents, they have been married for over 50 years, Marie is the Manager of the Modesto Certified Farmers Market and we get to enjoy the treats each Thursday and Saturday from May to December. Marie went to school at Davis High and received her degree in Biological Sciences from CSU Stanislaus in 1981. While at school, she was a manager at TriValley Growers Cannery so local food has been her specialty. Dennis originally was a farmer and retired from Gallo Winery in 2015. Marie became the Market Manager in 2007 after serving as Assistant Manager since 2004. You can’t miss Marie at the market where she also has the support of her daughter. Market regulars recognize the regular vendors and the seasonal specialties and the market has grown and thrived under her guidance. ModestoView: Why is the Modesto Certified Farmer’s Market so important to Modesto? Marie Uber: It features locally grown fresh seasonal produce. The vendors are prominently interactive with those who shop there. It is now open late March through late December. It brings together so many elements from our community; local business people, musicians and shoppers from as far away as Sacramento who come on a regular basis. The market has gained a reputation for having diverse children’s activities, music and providing a venue where local non-profits can get their word out to a large audience very quickly. We add so much to the community effort at healthy eating. For instance we had 2 grants working for our community. The first was the “Jr. Chef at the Market” where our own chef David Bradford and with partners ESRCD teaching healthy eating and cooking skills to 7th and 8th graders for 9 weeks in the summer of 2016 and 2017. This was entirely free to the Jr High Schools who sign up: Roosevelt and La Loma who are in areas where 70%(average) have students who are on the no-cost or low-cost lunch program. Costs ran about $1200/day for this program which the grant covered entirely along with administrative costs. It was also designed to be MOBILE so we can partner with almost anyone and go any where now. We also have a grant with The Ecology Action group (Berkeley) who in turn partners with

CDFA to provide $10 free dollars to match their Food Stamp purchases at the market. And they can do this at EVERY market. This program is called Market Match. MM is a match program that requires that we (the market) MATCH much of the costs. By the way we are looking for sponsorships to continue the Jr Chef program into the future now that the grant has ended. MV: What are you most excited for when the season opens each year? MU: Seeing the vendors who return and the shoppers, both those who are regulars and those who are new. The shoppers here want to know and care about what they eat and who grows it. People that shop regularly ask questions, important questions
about healthy eating. We address this with our Chef Cooking Demonstrations 2x/month. I love talking and interacting with everyone. MV: Do the chefs here in Modesto use the farmers market in their restaurants? MU: We see on average 5-7 local restaurant owners there every Saturday and Thursday. We also see local Health Food stores buying large quantities of organic and other produce on a regular basis. MV: What is the difference between certified and non-certified? MU: Very simply certified vendors “sell what they grow”. Vendors with crafts for instance do not grow any part of what they sell, they put the components together to create their product. Therefore you cannot know exactly where an item came from whereas in agricultural products where they come directly from the source and can be verified.
MV: How do we encourage more people to eat healthy from the market? MU: As I talked about earlier, the chefs do a tremendous job of using our seasonal produce and demonstrating how to use them in healthy recipes, which we also provide when the chefs are cooking. The EBT and the Market Match programs help those in need to buy the healthy produce items to maintain a healthier diet MV: What is one of the myths of a farmers market that you would like do dispel? MU: The market is a business owned and operated by and for the participants. The costs of bringing the market and its activities and programs are substantial and are paid for by and large by the fees collected from the vendors. Their pricing will be reflective of theirs and the markets operating costs. You get what you pay for I think might sum it up. Our vendors work hard to create a fun, pleasant atmosphere so people can come and relax and spend time with friends and family. MV: Is there anything more farm to fork than this? MU: Direct to the consumer, fresh from the farm (picked that morning) is as good as it gets. MV: You keep a good mix of vendors with both raw and prepared foods, how does this make the market better? MU: It gives those shopping a good variety. There is something for everybody. I like to think we have everything from Artichokes to Zuccini.

Lemon Up is raising money for breast cancer! This is a really awesome way to help raise funds and awareness. Our friends at Lemon Up at the Modesto Certified Farmer’s Market will be donating all of their proceeds from the Oct 5 & 7 markets to the local chapter of American Cancer Society breast cancer awareness division. They have set up a virtual team, Lemon UP! at Making Strides of Modesto which is presented by Alfred Matthews on October 15th. Also, Diva’s and Dudes with Susan Power will be raising money with a celebrity bartender event at Tresetti’s on October 5th from 5-9 pm. Stop by for a drink and the funds will go to the Making Strides event. Don’t miss the Making Strides event at the Gallo Center for the Arts – October 15 8 am. www.makingstrideswalk.org FOR MORE MODESTO INFO: www.modestoview.com
MV: What do you think would make the market better if you had unlimited budget? MU: We would be able to serve the Community better by adding even more programs than EBT (Food Stamps), Market Match, Cooking Demonstrations, and Jr Chef, etc. I would to have more educational interactive programs for the kids that would allow the parents to shop while they play, learn and grow with us. We provide “Market Money” for school kids to come to the market and learn about farming, growing what they eat and more. I’d like to expand it. I would also like to have parent/child and adult cooking classes at an affordable low cost fee for the entire market season. MV: Halloween is a special day at the Farmers Market, what makes it so fun? MU: The vendors participate by being in costume and truly enjoy having all the kids come to their booth to trick-or-treat. We offer substantial prizes to children and families who participate and win the costume contests. The costumes each year are SOOOOO creative. We have an awesome artistic community in these kids. MV: What are some of your favorite fall flavors?
MU: Lots of great produce comes with fall: beets, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, eggplant and grapes. There is so much its hard to pick. MV: Describe your perfect Modesto day. MU: Waking up to a cool breeze, a good cup of coffee and going to work at the market! MV: Our traditional question; Beatles or Stones? MU: Being a child of the sixties and a lover of music...they both brought music into a new era in different ways so I couldn’t pick one over the other. The Stones gave us all a sense of freedom and who couldn’t dance the night away to the Beatles.

PLANET Wild Planet Day at the Great Valley Museum by Brandilyn Brown In case you haven’t heard about it before, The Great Valley Museum’s annual Wild Planet Day is a fun event you don’t want your kids or grandkids to miss. While standard classroom settings struggle to make science fun, it’s an easy task to do for the awesome staff of volunteers at the four-floor Science Community Center at the West Campus Modesto Junior College. Not only can students with bright minds witness robot races, they can make a bat box and learn about bats from The Bat Lady, explore chemistry techniques with Enoch High School’s CSI program, and even take a trip into space! If you’ve found a “neat rock” on a recent adventure, you should bring your unidentified chunk of Earth to the Geology Club’s table to identify for you. Experienced staff members will guide you through the museum, and will bring out reptiles for your viewing delight. The planetarium, with its best-in-the-nation Carl Zeiss projector, will take you on incredible and life like tours of our universe using LED and digital technology. After “boarding the starship” and getting comfortable in your
seat, you can see the night sky above the Central Valley even in daytime. You can roam around to see any of our other eight planets, or go outside the Milky Way Galaxy and see the millions of other galaxies in our universe. Using the Zeiss, those of us who are not astronomers can now see the Great Red Spot on Jupiter, the shadow of Saturn’s rings on its surface, and the famous non-spherical moon of Mars, Phobos, which looks more like a potato than our very-round moon. There will be several shows to choose from, and each show is only additional $5. Last year we learned a lot about bats, this year special guest Park Ranger Shawn Estes will talk to us about bears. Bring the whole family and have a “beary” good time! $5 per person OR $20 for a family of 6. Parking is free on Saturdays. Saturday Oct 24th, 10am-3pm. SONGWRITING October Originals by Patty Castillo Davis
Everyone who knows me knows that I always get a request to sing Linda Ronstadt’s version of “Blue Bayou”. This song is one of the most beloved in my repertoire and was written by Roy Orbison and Joe Melson in 1961. Before I and thousands of other folks covered this song, it was a new creation, a fresh idea, an original story from two men’s imaginations to share. Our scene is rife with musicians who fashion innovative music. I’d like to give one last push for our local Songwriter nominees for the Modesto Area Music Awards category Unplugged/Singer Songwriter. Tractor Boy Chris Ward makes his home in Oakdale and plays regularly locally and in the Foothills. Tractor Boy’s tongue-in-cheek style fuses Honky Tonk Punk Rock with Comedic Alternative. Me & You The Duo are newlyweds Tyler and Christina Bates based out of Modesto. Inspired by the band Civil Wars, they take their harmonies seriously and on point. Already commanding television, radio and a successful single- enjoy them live on October 4 at the Barkin Dog MAMAnees showcase at 7pm. Cole Hinkle, a Lodi native has an old soul and his focus is on a career in Country music, influenced by Johnny Paycheck he has traveled to the Country Music mecca and played the famous Blue Bird Café in Nashville. Buy his EP entitled “Fallen”on iTunes and Spotify. Dale Huff ’s inspiration came from attending Johnny and Kelly’s local shows and made the move to open mic opportunities where he gained a following. Oct 13 Dale will be at Bookie’s ,music starts at 9 pm. Mattea Overstreet’s familiar Indie-Girl vocals
make her precisely on trend and her “Ladymagic” keeps her busy. Jordan Waters is making tracks across the region with his positive attitude, activist heart and catchy original material. On Oct. 3 Jordan will be a strolling musician during the Downtown Sampler. Nathan Ignacio is a One Man Band. Playing Guthrie, Dylan, and Cash inspired tunes from Modesto to the Foothills, you will be entertained. Mondo Mariscal is the 2017 Stockton/ Modesto NASH Next competition winner. In November, Mondo and 9 other finalists from across the country will compete in Nashville to be the NEXT Nashville hitmaker! You can experience his Country offerings on Oct. 13 at 8pm at Woodbridge Crossing. Stevie Vasquez honed his many transformations of style at the Queen Bean open mic and feels ready to embrace his original voice whether it be with secular or sacred music. Kayla Just’s debut single “California” conjures up a pleasant, accustomed female sound. Oct. 4 at the Barkin Dog you can hear Kayla. Showtime is 7pm. Deva Sunday Breakfast music includes Geovannie Brooks 10/1, Nathan Ignacio 10/8, Poorhouse Millionaires 10/15, Tim and Patty 10/22 and Me and You-the Duo 10/29. Join the Patty Castillo Davis Band at the First United Methodist Church’s Downtown Music Series on 10/6, during the Dia De Los Muertes Art Walk on 10/ 19 and on the Sierra Dinner Train’s Haunted Masquerade Ball 10/28.

BLUES My Birthday Month Hello everybody and welcome to the best month of the year aka my birthday month! I’m turning 41 and I’m having more fun than ever. It’s music, I say music, that is the fountain of youth and on that note, let’s talk shows. On the 3rd is an event called the Downtown Sampler and if you head to the 10th St Plaza to hear me with the Poorhouse Millionaires starting at 5:30pm and get a taste of all Modesto has to offer. The next evening at CR2 Wednesday Friendsday welcomes Nathan Ignacio and Mattea Overstreet at 8pm. On the 6th you have 2 great options: you can see Rob Hill Band at the Rotary Club Mixer in Modesto or you can check out Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame at Valley Brews in Stockton. Jumping ahead to the 11th Cole Hinkle will open Wednesday Friendsday with the Voodoo Killers for a great night of music. There’s a big show in Folsom on the 12th: William Bell, Bobby Rush and Charlie Musselwhite are playing the Harris Center. All 3 of these fellas are blues royalty. This is a mustsee show for the serious blues nuts out there. If you like your Blues served with a side of Rock and Roll I suggest you head over to
Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds the Gallo Center on Oct 13th for a night with the Fabulous Thunderbirds. The original Kim Wilson is one of the most amazing performers I have ever seen, no joke. I saw him hold a large crowd in silence for almost 10 minutes while he sang and played a capella at the State several years ago. Plus their songs “Tuff Enuff ” and “Wrap It Up” are two of my all-time favorites. Joe Medwick’s Funky Floorboards will be at CR2 for Wednesday Friendsday on the 18th. Just a couple days latter on the 20th Poorhouse Millionaires are playing at 108 Sports Lounge in Riverbank. Oct 25th Members of Buffalo Buffalo Mk White and Adam Bishop will be sharing the bill with Washboard Monkeys for Wednesday Friendsday at CR2.

ZEN Yin and Yang by Mary Layton There is an ancient symbol from China that has pervaded western culture. We all have seen it around health food stores, martial art classes and bookstores, on T shirts and hats: The Yin and Yang symbol. A circle divided into two teardrop- shaped halves, one white, the other black. Within each half is a smaller circle of the opposite color. What does it mean? In a nutshell, the Yin and Yang symbol is a concept in Taoist philosophy representing perfect balance. As with many of the other Eastern philosophies such as Zen, the Tao is an experience rather than a “thought”. It holds that all beings and even the
universe itself, are made up of two forces called Yin and Yang. The Yin principle (the black half of the circle) represents darkness, cold and femininity and invites withdrawal, rest and passivity. The Yang principle (the white half of the circle) represents light, heat and masculinity generating expansion, activity, even aggression. Within each half is a smaller circle of the opposite color telling us that each principle has a little element of the other. This is what constitutes a healthy whole. Although they are opposites, Yin and Yang reside together, interact with each other and unite as one. Everything has positive and negative elements within itself. A symbol so concise, describing all of life - is truly amazing! In a continuous flow of becoming and transforming, everything always moves in one direction or the other. Up or down, toward day or toward night, toward lightness or heaviness, growth or decline, life or death. One thing for sure, is that the two forces do not represent good or evil. The Yin aspect of things is just as important as the Yang, you cannot have one without the other. For more info go to : taichi4modesto.com or call (209)572-4518

ALL AGES Autism is a factor in every community, and Modesto is no different. Modesto has incredible programs to support children and adults who have autism. At all high schools there are two programs, Pura Vida Club and Pals. Pura Vida translates to Pure Life and is a club supporting high functioning autistic students. These students are typically are in general education classes, and have one only period together to better their social skills and to meet new friends. I spend every day with Downey’s special education students through the PALS program. For one period, I get to help low functioning autistic students go through their adaptive physical education class. Because of these kids, I am excited to go to school. They, without fail, make my day with their optimistic attitudes and their constant strives towards their daily goals. If you are a high school student, I 100% recommend getting involved in these programs because I have gained more knowledge than in any other core class. If you have or know an autistic child, The State Theatre is showing three wonderful movies (UP, Home and Sing) that are entirely sensory friendly. The lights will be on, the sound will be low, and all autistic families are welcome to come for free! Disney’s UP (my favorite), will be shown on October 11th at 4:00 PM and you can find all the other times and

DRAIL is a program that helps adults with autism live independently and get connected with the resources they need! To support this amazing program, there will be a color run down our very own Virginia corridor trail! On October 21st, you can walk, run or wheel while getting covered in color powder, for a great cause. Sign up for “The Great Pumpkin Color Run” by October 6th on the website https://www.eventbrite. com/e/drail-5k-great-pumpkin-color-run-tickets-36617794810 I am beyond excited about these wonderful events and hope that you can get involved to make our community that much better. Don’t forget, Ernest and Julio Gallo learned how to start their winery business at the library. Who will be next? DIANE; SURGICAL WEIGHT LOSS PATIENT
In the last decade, the number of adults now taking prescription drugs has increased nearly 10 percent – an increase correlating with the rise in obesity across the United month. When you’ve tried every weight loss tool in your kit, but the weight won’t budge, it’s time to try a new tool that may make the difference. Take our surgical weight loss assessment at ValleySurgicalWeightLoss.com out if you’re a candidate, or call (877) 946-3604.
Weight loss surgery may be an option for adults with a body mass index (BMI) equal to or greater than 40, or equal to or greater than 35 with serious health problems related to obesity. Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding may be an option for people with a BMI of 30 or more who have at least one serious obesity-related health problem. Weight loss surgery is considered safe, but like any surgery, it does have risks. Consult with your physician about the risks and benefits of weight loss surgery.
