businesses, like the ones that advertise here in Modesto. Now more than ever, in this Amazon world of shopping, it is more important that we shop and live local, buy our goods and services from our friends in town. That keeps our community strong and when you see a local company like Direct Appliance grow and expand, we need to support them. We are proud that they advertise in our ModestoView. This is how it works, for goods, services, food, drink and more, let’s celebrate our local and support those that support local. Thank you for being loyal ModestoView readers and it is so good to meet many of you when we’re at events like the Community Brunch, Picnic at the Pops, Power of the Purse and so much more. It’s Rocktober. I remember when I first heard the word Rockober on the old KSAN San Francisco many years ago and I thought it was the coolest! It sums up the month perfectly. October is truly the best blend of fall, music, haunted treats, dark mornings and darker evenings with a nice fall chill that really gets you in the mood for anything. It is especially relevant here in Modesto USA as we are smack dab in the middle of harvest, the MAMA Awards bring the best of Modesto area rock to the forefront and we are getting our haunted groove on. Best of all, my family is back together and we are all living in Modesto. This has made me as happy as it is possible to be. So glad that my kids enjoyed growing up in Modesto enough to come back and begin their new adult lives here. Good jobs, great culture and amazing relationships. Becky and I are truly lucky and love our kids more than they can know and having Ryan and Harrison in our lives is the cherry on the top. Music is my favorite thing in the world. There is nothing like music to take you back to a place, a memory, a first date, first dance and that’s one of the reasons why the Modesto Area Music Awards are so important. Not just to the bands that make the music, but the creativity of the music community, the great songs, the live shows and the positive impact live music has on

our community. Cities with a great musical culture are more creative, vibrant and attract more interesting people. That’s why we need to celebrate our places that host music, the band and the musicians that create music and the events the bring us together. Please vote for your local faves at www.modestoareamusic.com The last day of the month should be a national holiday. Halloween is amazing and is our family’s favorite holiday. The spooky, creepy fun that we have is a blast and decorating the house for a night of trick or treat is the most fun. We will be on the lookout this month for the creepiest and the most decorated houses and will be showcasing them on our ModestoView Instagram. So if you have a tip, please let us know. Hope to see you out and about on Halloween and for the other Dia de los Muertos events this season too. It was heartbreaking to see the fire that destroyed one of our long time local businesses in Modesto, but it was heart warming to see all of the support from our community as they rebuild. We want to make sure that we are celebrating and shopping at our locally owned

THANK YOU

Thank you all for supporting us!

The Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group and ModestoView crews teamed up to support the American Heart Association and we walked in the annual Heart Walk. This was more than just a walk, it was a commitment to a healthy lifestyle and being aware of the things that build “heart health”. We all need to move a little more and get out there and make positive changes and we were proud to do that. Thank you to all of our team that helped make a difference. Thank you to all of our local business partners, friends and family that donated to our team and to our effort. We really came through and helped raise a lot of money. For those of you that still pick up my calls fearing that I will be asking you to donate to something, thank you for supporting us. You really made it work. – Chris Murphy

MAMA Preview

By Chris Murphy In 2000, Chris Ricci and I wanted to showcase the amazing musical talent we have here in our area. 19 years later, we are still celebrating musical talent and the talent keeps getting better. Music, and in particular live music, is so very important to a community. Cities and towns with a live music culture draw more creative people in. They tend to support programs like music in the schools as the arts are important to growing smart creative kids. Music in the schools is what leads to things like MoBand in the Park, VMI Rocks and other places where people can express their musical talent. We are on an upswing with more places hosting live music, more banquet halls, restaurants and bars showcasing live music and we even have a community stage that ModestoView built in 10th St Plaza to showcase music all year long. There are so many different kinds of music from Americana, to Pop, Indie, Jazz, Blues and Metal that have a big depth of talent. We are proud to award the MAMA Lifetime Award to Modesto’s Steve Ashman who gives so much back to our community. You can meet him in our interview on page 14. One October 16, we celebrate all kinds of music in the Modesto area and this is one night where we are all one music community. Over 200 nominees in 20 categories will be showcased at the historic State Theatre. We need you to VOTE! You pick which band, singer, event or venue will take home the coveted MAMA Carhop statuette, precision made by Beeler Industries. Show your support to the live music culture in our area by voting at www. modestoareamusic.com You can watch the awards beginning at 6:30 on the 16th at www. modestoview.com Vote NOW!

CHEF By Brandilyn Brown Photos and intro by Chris Murphy

Something very exciting has happened! Our American Graffiti history has landed smack dab in the middle of the Modesto Historic Cruise Route in a very tasty way. Linda Abeldt & Rex Osborn just opened Graffiti Dogs in the 10th Street Plaza. Honoring the city’s American Graffiti history, it’s a match made in heaven being on 10th Street along the legendary cruise route, surrounded by classic cars every weekend for the Downtown markets and festivals, paired with a classic American food: hot dogs. When you step inside, you are welcomed to the world of cool classic car culture. They are open every day (excluding major holidays) serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. And if you think there’s no such thing as a breakfast dog, think again! They’ve got 4 to choose from, so definitely give an egg and cheese dog a try. Their menu consists of 20 dogs, or you can build your own (called a “Garage Dog”) with an array of delicious local ingredients. No matter your diet, they’ve got you covered: all beef hot dogs, chicken dogs, brats, and vegan dogs. They have gluten-free buns, or go bunless for less carbs. Salads are also available, with many of the same toppings as the dogs. Nothing about this place is boring, even the salads! Chef Dane Barry really spoils you, making many of the toppings from scratch, such as the chili, the bacon jam and the onion relish. Even the chips are made just for you when you order them. You can’t get fresher than that. The kitchen is super efficient and each dog is crafted by hand. Also in the kitchen is Des Sanders who brings her experience to the craft hot dog. Our favorites? The Graffiti Dog, which has so much on it that each bite tastes completely

10

different! It has onion relish, kraut, blue cheese, bacon jam, bell peppers, tomatoes, pesto aiolo and brown mustard, topped with breaded onions. Runner up is the Cop Dog, a deliciously surprising mix of mac & cheese and bacon jam. Each dog has a fun cruising name, like the Wolfman Jack Chili Cheese Dog or the Faros Dog. Our other fave is the Cruise Route dog that is loaded with kraut and so much more. You know what else is part of good ol’ fashioned graffiti fun? Milkshakes. Even our Frankensteins on the cover of this issue know how to enjoy a milkshake! You can order one in nearly any flavor you want. Want a little crunch with your dessert; order a soft-serve cone, your in-

ner child will thank you. Or your real child, get them one too, sharing is caring! The Little Hot Rod menu has everything your little humans would want to eat. Their patio is perfect to participate in any event that happens in the plaza, and the outside seating allows your pet dogs, too. So come in the next time you’re downtown to experience a piece of Modesto’s oldest most favorite pastime. Order at the Fueling Station (kitchen), fill up at the Fuel Pump (soda fountain) or if you’re over 21, check out the taps at the Lubrication Station, and enjoy your gourmet dog with a shake, thinking back on where you (or your parents) were in ’62. Start your engines, eat up and chow down!

Much Ado About Fado By Aaron Rowan

October Movies

Fadista > Fashionista is my musical motto this month. I first met Ramana Vieira a year and a half ago and listened to her album ‘Fado da Vida,’ and she’s been at the top of my list to catch a live show ever since. They call Ramana the new voice of Portuguese world music. Fado, the most widely recognized music of Portugal, is a passionate, soul-stirring music with soar-

ing vocals and dramatic tales of love, loss and redemption. Bay Area born and raised, Ramana has developed a fresh take on the classic Fado style with added instrumentation and a New Age vibe. You have the chance to live fado da vida loca and join me in the front row at the Gallo Center on Saturday 10/13, when Ramana and her ensemble take the stage. Guitar, bass, violin, percussion and guest vocalists will round out this captivating musical style. 7 PM, tickets starting at $20 at www.galloarts.org. The very stylish and stylized StringQuake are passing through on their way to the eastern Sierras, and I’ll be presenting them at Center Stage Conservatory’s lower level studio, one of my favorite listening spaces. Electric harp, cello and percussion combine to share fresh and intricate arrangements influenced by Latin, classical Indian, West African folk and Balkan music. They are among the very finest acts I have worked with, and earned more than one standing ovation the first time I featured them. 948 11th St., downstairs in the City Center building. Saturday 10/6 at 8 PM, $15/$20. Visit www.modestounplugged.com for more info.

Sunday 10/14, Tom Rigney & Flambeau at Sunday Afternoons At CBS. Fiery Cajun and zydeco two-steps, low-down blues, funky New Orleans grooves, and heartbreakingly beautiful ballads and waltzes. 1705 Sherwood Ave., 3 PM, $10-$25. Saturday 10/20, the new Catfish Community Gathering & Music Festival at Woodward Reservoir in Oakdale. An all-day lineup from 10am-10pm will include reggae acts A La Lune and Natural Revolution; singer-songwriters Vanessa Valencia and Inca Waiit; and headliner Dan Kelly, lead singer of Fortunate Youth. $10 admission. METAL Greetings Metal Heads and aspiring Metal Heads By Brent Terry My name is Brent Terry, and I will be your gracious tour guide through the ever-changing world of the Modesto Metal Scene. I have been a proud member of the community for a number of years, and even though some of you may not know my name, face, or voice, I am very proud to be a part of this community. That being said, I am elated to be a part of the Modesto View, and would hope you will return to read future articles. That all being said, let’s get this started with the immortal words of Max Cavalera, “UM DOIS TRéS QUA…” (And yes, it is Portuguese and not Spanish, do not write in and complain!). It is great to see bands that I have shared the stage with for 15+ year still kicking ass and taking names. Stigmurder is one of these bands and I highly recommend you make it out to see not only one, but all of their shows! I am sure Stigmurder will be tearing up the Central Valley all Summer, but the announce-

ment that they will be sharing the stage with the mighty Goatwhore, The Casualties, Black Tusk, and Nothing But Losers for the “Metal Alliance Tour” date on November 9th at Full Circle Brewing, 620 F St, Fresno, CA, 5PM is one hell of a way to bring in the Winter. Congratulations to Stigmurder and N.B.L. for landing such an incredible opportunity. October 27th People! Mark this on your calendar, but let’s not kid ourselves, put this date in your phone so you do not miss this show. “The Summoning Carnevil - Metal Stage”, taking place in Downtown Modesto, is absolutely stacked with some of the Central Valley’s very best! With performances by Eroszion, Sworn To The Black, Nothing But Losers, Echoes of The Forgotten, Lost Horizons, Harlot Exiled, Bavmorda, Hard Knox, Fear The Worst, Ununoctium, and Manic, it promises to be one hell of a time. Thank you for taking the time to read my first contribution to the Metal View, and I would love to hear from you, the fan, the bands, or just those who have something to say. I would love to feature your band, artist, or anyone that has a direct impact on the Modesto Metal Scene. Keep it Metal Modesto

GEEK

Geeks who Drink Night at St. Stan’s

by Alan Falconer Are you just itching to flex your pop-culture trivia muscles? Lucky for you, there’s a weekly quiz game in Modesto where you can win prizes while having a fun night out with your friends. St. Stan’s Brewing Co. Tap Room plays host to Geeks Who Drink, a free pub quiz featuring eight rounds of eight questions each, meaning you’re in for a full night of wracking your brain with your fellow teammates to earn prizes such as free pints or even money toward your tab. So obviously, the stakes are pretty high, here. Up to six people can be a team, but don’t worry if you’re flying solo or don’t have a full complement; you can find other incomplete teams and join forces to compete while getting to know your new friends. The categories cover an incredibly wide range of topics across decades, so age and personal background are absolutely no problem- in fact, you’ll probably want to make sure your team is as diverse as possible so you have the best shot at taking the lead. But taking the lead is no easy feat. Sixteen teams competed the night I attended with fellow ViewCrew, and the competition was fierce! I got the impression that more than a few teams may

have been doing this regularly for some time, which speaks to just how fun the games are in addition to how the St. Stan’s creates a warm and inviting atmosphere with their huge selection of drinks and incredible food (seriously, try the Spicy Monkey pizza). But even though there may be some pub quiz veterans playing, the more is always the merrier. My team and I felt welcome immediately, and it was a night full of celebrating the correct answers and collectively groaning when we got questions wrong. But ultimately, is Geeks Who Drink all about winning? No. Do I say that because our team got last place? ...I’m going to stick with “no”. Because what Geeks Who Drink is really about, in this reporter’s opinion, is celebrating pop-culture while having a great time out with friends. And at the absolute very least, you’re going to learn something. For example, did you know that paisley is not only a pattern, it’s also a town in Scotland? That’s a freebie from me to you. You can play Geeks Who Drink’s pub quiz in Modesto every Thursday at St. Stan’s Brewing Co. Tap Room starting at 7:00pm, but if you’re elsewhere in the Central Valley, consider checking www.GeekswhoDrink.com to see where a game is being played near you. And for more info on St. Stan’s, you can visit www.ststans.com.

INTER

Steve Ashman MAMA Award winner and Community Advocate By Chris Murphy

It is so great when people that excel in one field and then use their talents, fame and skills to do great works in their community. One local organization is so very fortunate to have one such person, Steve Ashman. Steve is the executive director of CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates, a local branch of a national nonprofit that advocates for abused and neglected children in the court system. Steve brings to this role, a background that includes founding one of the Bay Area’s most popular bands, Zasu Pitts Memorial Orchestra in the 1980s and 90s with an amazing global reputation that still plays today. Steve blends his love of music and his passion for advocating for children with excellent results here in Modesto. He gives so much back to the local non-profits and the Modesto Area Music scene and that is why he is the 2018 MAMA Lifetime Award winner. Let’s meet Steve. MV: Where did you grow up? SA: Los Angeles, CA MV: Who inspired you growing up? SA: My grandfather, Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King MV: What did you want to be when you were in school? SA: LMAO! Had NO idea! MV: Why the upside down bass? SA: A friend of mine needed a bass player and was desperate. I told him I would play (notice: not COULD). I was predictably awful but something made me go and buy a bass the next day. I based my purchase on – of course – what it looked like. So I bought a right handed, fretless bass. The only thing was I play left-handed. MV: How did ZaSu Pitts Memorial Orchestra get created? SA: I had been sick for some time and a friend of mine (Philip Lithman, AKA Snakefinger from a SF band, the Residents) asked me to put a band together to open for a project of his. I called a bunch of friends (all of whom were in other bands) and told them I wanted to do a set of 60’s R+B (nobody was doing anything close to it at the time) and the Pitts were born. February 13, 1983 was our first gig at (a now defunct club) the I-Beam in San Francisco.

14

MV: What was a Hall of Fame memory of ZaSu? SA: My god there are a ton! I guess for me it’s the relationships I have with my band mates. We really are like a family. I am a Godfather to 3 of the kids born to members of the band. I count many of the members of the band as my favorite people. They are all incredibly talented, but even better humans. I feel lucky to be playing music with them. They are all a gift. MV: How did CASA find you? SA: They needed someone who could be a pain in the ass, was driven and wasn’t afraid to risk. I guess I fit the bill. When I began at CASA we were serving 13 kids. Last year we served 231. It’s an extraordinary number – but we still have anywhere from 300-400 kids on our waiting list at any given time.

OCTOBER HALLWEEN HAPPENINGS 2018

MV: What is so important about their mission? SA: We serve many of the most vulnerable children and youth in our community, kids in foster care who have been abused and neglected. We make a positive difference in their lives and try to model the positive possibilities that exist for each and every one of them, regardless of the situation they are in. MV: How does this help the most vulnerable? SA: Kids often do not have a ‘voice’ – especially in a complex system like the Court system. Although they have an attorney and a social worker, their attorney often has 120-150 other cases and their social worker can change at the drop of a hat. We hope to provide a consistent, caring adult in their lives that really get to know the child or youth … and not just on paper.

If we can connect on a deeper, more personal level with these kids we can advocate for THEIR needs in a world that is often based on an adult’s needs or desires. MV: What is something people may not know about CASA? SA: We are small but we are mighty! Our volunteer advocates are amazing and committed – and we need a lot more of them to meet the never ending need. MV: Are your former band mates supportive of your musical fundraising? SA: Absolutely. All I have to do is let them know what it is for and they are all in. Every one of them is committed to making the world a better place; again, they are an amazing group of individuals. MV: How do you see your passion and your profession mixing in the future? SA: My passion is my profession. I am lucky that I can (and do) lead two very distinctive lives and get to commit to both. MV: Describe your ideal day in Modesto ? SA: Aside from hanging out with my family, waking up in the morning and going to court and having all of the kids we serve adopted or in long term positive living arrangements followed by lunch (BBQ preferred) and then a gig with my band and the friends I have made here in Modesto sitting in at the State Theatre with no curfew! MV: Who would you most like to share the stage with? SA: Eric Clapton, Bruce Hornsby, Aimee Mann, John Jorgensen, Steve Winwood, Paul McCartney, Jim Gordon MV: And our traditional question: Beatles or Stones? SA: Beatles. Although I would like a blood transfusion from Keith Richards.

Eddi Marie Julian - Credit: ModestoNews.com For Halloween and everyday candies and chocolates, look no further than Beckles Candies and Gifts in Downtown Modesto. Owner and resident candy expert Eddi Marie Julian gave us a tour of her store and a demonstration of some fun Halloween and Fall themed candy making that can be done at home! For this demonstration, Eddi Marie showed us how to turn everyday snack items into chocolate-dipped delicacies. “These are easy, little crafty snacks,” she said. We used pretzels, giant marshmallows on a stick, and even dried fruits as our base snacks. She added, “The flat sticks work better than a pole stick for the marshmallows.” The next step is to dip the snacks into a small bowl of melted chocolate. Milk, dark, and white chocolates can all be used for this. To melt the chocolate, you can use a double boiler method for stovetop cooking or melt carefully in the microwave, checking every few seconds to make sure the chocolate does not burn. “You can re-heat the chocolate as long as you don’t let it solidify,” said Eddi Marie. Immediately after dipping the snack into the melted chocolate, we used a variety of candy to sprinkle onto the chocolate. Now, this is where you can really get creative. Anything from candy sprinkles

and crushed nuts to toasted coconut or other small candies can be strewn over the still-warm chocolate and stick to the surface, becoming adhered to the chocolate as it cools and solidifies. Eddi Marie used carefully placed, colorful candy-coated sunflower seeds to make candy faces in some milk chocolate covered giant marshmallows for a charming effect. The sky’s the limit with what you can do to decorate your candy to make unique treats for Halloween, kid’s parties, or simply a festive indulgence. Once our snacks were dipped and decorated, we put them on wax paper to allow the chocolate to cool and set. While we were waiting, we talked about another of our favorite fall treats: Eddi Marie’s famously delectable caramel apples. There is something so nostalgic about the look, feel, and taste of a classic caramel apple in the fall. You can make your own caramel apples at home, too, and even decorate them with additional flavors, chocolate drizzle, and candies like we did with our chocolate-dipped snacks. Eddi Marie makes her famous apples year-round when in season and even makes special variations and custom orders. “We like to start with the caramel, and then anything else will stick to it very nicely. One that we have done before is the Apple Pie Caramel Apple. It’s dipped in caramel, then white chocolate, and cinnamon apple pie seasoning,” she explained. You can order special batches or stop by her store to see what’s fresh and ready at 950 10th Street in “Sweet 16” in Downtown Modesto, where you’ll also find all of the chocolate and candy you’ll need to make your own special treats like we did!

MORE hAPPY HAUNTINGs Tis the season of haunts, harvests and hallow. There is something magical about this time of year, when the cool breezes blow through the trees and the leaves begin to fall into Autumn. The mist just seems to blow across the lawns and parks and there might be eerie sounds to make the day more interesting. There are so many ways we can celebrate this vivid and surreal time of the year of giant harvest moons and pumpkin spice lattes. Let’s take a look at some of our surreal options this October. Make sure you check out www. modestoview.com for the latest fall harvest and haunted events in our community. Step inside a haunted land of 11th St. in Downtown Modesto. GO MODESTO! Peace Officer Run - October 7 Voting for the Modesto Area Music Awards will end at Midnight on October 14th with the Awards Show taking place at the State Theatre on Tuesday, October 16th. Over the last month, I am sure you have been hit up by more than a few nominees for your vote. Hopefully, you have checked out the nominations in all the categories, have gone out and seen some new bands or checked out a venue, cafe or bar you might never have been to before. Many people think that this is what the MAMAs are all about, a competition to see who can get the most votes and take home a carhop trophy. That might have been correct in the beginning, though over the last few years the Modesto Area Music Association has become a non-profit, has curated numerous events, helping pair local performers and get them paid over $30,000 in the process. Our goal is to help create and grow a vibrant music community and use our resources to connect those in need of performers with the right bands, solo artists and performers and get them paid. We are also going to be awarding a few scholarships to VMI or Modesto Sound. This way we can help nourish the next generation. If you are a local business owner, organization or club, please feel free to get in

touch if you are in need of live entertainment. The Modesto Area has a rich and fertile entertainment scene, we could use a couple mid-size venues sure, but the talent is out there. Please consider spending your money at places that support live entertainment, that host art shows, poetry readings and comedy, In this way, we will see more and more spots follow suit. There will be more avenues for local and yes touring bands to set up for the night, and we the arts and music lovers will reap the benefit from this. Also since most places in the area that allow live entertainment are locally owned, you are supporting your friends and neighbours as well as the performers. As we all know money spent locally, is reinvested in the local economy. If you have not taken a moment to vote, go to www.modestoareamusic.com/vote, check out all the nominees and vote for who you think should win, Most of the nominees have links so you can check them out, see if you like what they do, hopefully, you find some new favorites.

This race was developed to honor the police officers from Stanislaus County who were killed in the line of duty. In honor of these heroes, the start line, finish line and each mile of the half marathon will be dedicated to one of the 17 fallen officers from Stanislaus County. The officer’s photo along with the agency they worked for and their “End of watch” date will be displayed at their mile marker. www.peaceofficermemorialrun.com 6:45am- Ceremony honoring the 17 fallen officers who have paid the ultimate price in Stanislaus County. 7:00am- Half Marathon / Relay Start 7:20am- 5K Start 9:30am- Kids Fun Run Start 6am to 12pm- Safety Faire/Race Expo on I St between 10th and 11th St

SONGWRITING FALLing Into Music

October Blues

by Patty Castillo Davis

By Earl Matthews

Autumn is the crowning glory of the year and the prelude to all things ghoulish and sacred at the same time. With mostly cooperative weather and limitless choices, you can partake in every type of event where music is the focus. I would be remiss if I did not mention the MAMAs. On October 11 at the historic State Theater, nominees from across the 209 in multi genres of music will be recognized. If you did not nominate your favorites or vote, pleaseno dissent. Keep playing your heart out and booking those shows. Create a strong, unrelenting online presence, be high profile. Put forth the best product you can and when the summons comes around, “Who do you think should be nominated for a MAMA”?, speak your mind during this time. Later is too late. Please read my previous piece online about the 2016 Unplugged/Songwriter nominees and visit pattycastillodavis.com for my picks in each category. Now in it’s fourth year, the Yosemite Songwriting Retreat, October 7-10 is an intensive weekend of instruction with a variety of accomplished songwriters. This year’s instructors include Grammy winning Americana artist Laurie Lewis, fierce slide guitar player and poet

BLUES

David Jacobs-Strain and soulful and heartfelt songsmith Keith Greeninger. In addition to classes and workshops, there will be opportunities to perform and record your songs and sign up for mentor sessions and get individual attention. Anyone 18 years and older can participate. Previous songwriting is welcome but not necessary. For more information visit www. yosemitesongwriting.com. I would like to call on all Unplugged/Songwriter talent in the area to please contact me at pattycastillodavis.com if you are interested in bringing your music to some fine venues in the 209, promote your product and reach a larger audience. Send your existing event dates for publishing on or before October 16. As usual, keep making original music, team write with another, join the 52 Week Club, test your art at an open mic but by all means create.

COMEDY Hello, hello, hello

seasonal menu full bar event venue

greens on tenth 953 tenth st. 209.572.1700

Hello, hello, hello. It’s my View-a-versary! One year ago I started writing the Comedy View column. Thanks to all five of you for reading. Send cake. October = MAMA’s. During a lapse of judgement, I asked the comic MAMAnees why they should win. Taylor Evans: I want to show other crappy comics like Jason Sohm we have a chance in the world. Marcus Peverill: ‘Cus I’m cute and cuddly. Saul Trujillo: I have the best chicken soup recipe in the game. I saw Suge Knight one time. AJ DeMello: I’m just here to get drunk. Chris Teicheira: I am old and will probably be dead before the other MAMAnees. Serena Gamboa (the Spicy Latina): I produce for veterans, cannabis groups and more. Also, I fill the PC boxes of female, Latina and epileptic. Rhoda Ramone: Vote for the Spicy Latina, best rack in the 209. Andre Morton: I have devoted myself to Jesus. He’s given me the strength to persevere in this industry with his love. Jimmie Menezes: I’ve been building a #209comedy community so fans and artists can enjoy the quality stand-up found in large markets. Anthony K had no comment so you’ll have to guess whether he deserves your vote. MAMAs

By Felicia Aleman are announced October 16. Stay tuned. On September 7, the State Theater and the Gallo Center both hosted sold-out comedy shows—an incredible feat in a city that has no comedy club and a small scene. However, the Gallo Center hosted local comics with headliner Anthony K joined by Chris Teicheira and Taylor Evans. It was encouraging to see so much support for local comedy with a house that included many comics from the 209 and surrounding areas. These three all gave phenomenal performances. The show was hilarious and on par with any Netflix special. Most importantly, this show had heart. All of the comics spoke honestly about valley life, tweakers and all, in a way that was hilarious and loving—like how the family talks about the silly cousin who has one cocktail too many at family gatherings. The storytelling was masterful and the laughs didn’t stop. Anthony K closed the show with a moving tribute to his grandmother that turned tears of laughter into more tears. Modesto View readers, I can’t say it enough. See a local show. Support local talent. You won’t be disappointed.

FIT

MV: How are you feeling these days as a lighterman compared to when you were at your heaviest? Earl: My energy level is through the roof! I feel better and can be on my feet for a lot longer. It has changed my life in so many ways that it would take 500 words to scratch the surface. MV: What type of message can you share with others who might be struggling with weight loss? Earl: When I started this diet I was scared that it would take me years to get to my goal. It was scary, and I questioned whether or not I had the strength of will to see it through. It has been 16 months, and I am almost to my goal. It has been hard at times, but well worth the effort. I can’t recommend this diet enough. My doctors are amazed at what I have done and everywhere I go it’s all people want to talk about with me. It’s honestly the best thing I have ever done for myself, and unlike surgery, I didn’t have to mess up my digestive track for the rest of my life. I’m not trying to judge anyone for getting it done, I know it’s a hard choice, but I knew that I didn’t want to do that. I did it myself, and I take pride in that. For anyone out there who wants to make that weight loss change, I say go for it. Do your research, talk to your doctor and take it one day at a time.

Inspirational Earl By Efren Martinez I recently had the pleasure to DJ an event with Big Earl. You all might know him from his bands, “Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame” or maybe “The Poorhouse Millionaires”. I couldn’t help but do a doubletake when I saw him. WOW! He has lost a lot of weight. In his own words, “the size of a football player”. Once being overweight myself, I know that weight loss is no easy task and takes a great deal of discipline and dedication throughout one’s life. After exchanging a few quick hugs of happiness, I asked him if he would share his weight loss journey for all of us who might be struggling with weight loss. Although according to Earl, the weight loss “Journey” is not over just yet. I told him at the rate he is going; he might want to consider changing his stage name from Big Earl to Inspirational Earl. MV: What is the name of the diet program you are using and how does it work? Earl: I did a “Keto Diet”. The basic idea of the diet is to remove sugar and almost all carbohydrates from your diet to stop the production of insulin. Then increase your intake of healthy fats to stimulate the production of “Ketones” by your liver. Once in a state of “ketosis” it will become fat fueled, and then, by restricting calories you will burn body fat much faster than on a regular diet. MV: How much weight have you lost and what was your heaviest weight? Earl: At my heaviest, I was at 650lbs. I have dropped 260lbs, and I’m now at 390lbs. My

goal is to get down to 300lbs, which for my height and build is the ideal weight. MV: Are you doing any kind of exercise including walking with this program? If so, what is it? Earl: I don’t currently work out due mostly to joint problems related to my weight and past injuries.

ALL AGES BOOing By Sofia Johnson

October is here along with one of my favorite childhood traditions… BOOing! BOOing is sort of a Halloween version of doorbell ditching, but there’s a twist. You prepare a basket of small gifts and candies on the porch, along with a BOO poem and instructions. If you are BOOed it’s your turn to BOO someone, but don’t get caught! I have been doing this fun and friendly tradition for as long as I can remember and even my parents like to BOO their friends! Another fun thing to do this spooky season is just up the hill at Columbia State Historical Park. They will be hosting ghost tours for only $10 on October 21 and November 4. The tour will lead you through the old, 1850’s mining town as you hear stories of unexplainable sight-

G ETHTE

ings, noises, and supernatural occurrences. I for one, am especially looking forward to this, as Columbia is also a nostalgic part of my childhood. Columbia is also a great place to go for a day trip or even an overnighter. Spend your day panning for gold, riding the stagecoach, eating ice cream and learning more about its amazing history. For any other fun this season, there are some great corn and hay mazes in the area that i suggest checking out. I hope everyone enjoys this beautiful season in this beautiful town we live in and has a spook-tacular Halloween!

ZEN The Journey By Mary Layton There’s a famous Chinese saying : The journey of ten thousand miles starts with the first step. I wish I could paint or draw. But because I want to paint as good as Picasso I

won’t even start Now, if I would just start with a single, easy step, like enrolling in an art class and learning, little by little about the tools and the paper and how to hold the brush and how to mix colors, I may indeed be on my way to learn how to paint. Expectations are counterproductive. They intimidate and inhibit us. Even writing these words require that I start with the first word. Where do I want my words to go, what will I encounter in the process? This applies to anything mankind is involved with. Building a house, starting a family, playing music or creating a vibrant community or making friends. For parents to see their child take their first step brings them great joy. Like the baby who learns to walk, we can take our first step toward learning something or to fulfill a wish. And like the baby we won’t be so smooth and graceful, so capable right away. But in time, little by little our hard work and perseverance will pay off. It’s all about that first step. It could be as simple as a click on what interests you in your computer or making a phone call. Or getting that guitar out of the closet and playing one or two notes. Or sticking in the Italian Language CD into your car radio...and you may have started the amazing journey of ten thousand miles. For more info go to : taichi4modesto.com or call (209)572-4518
