Happy Rocktober. No matter what is happening, October is always Rocktober when it is the month of the MAMAs. Heck it has been that way ever since KSAN used to call it Rocktober back in the 70s. This is the 2nd weirdest October in modern history. Last year was the weirdest, as we were all locked down, not knowing what was going to happen. Was it the end of COVID or was it the beginning? Well here we are a year later, stumbling aimlessly down the path to recovery and normalcy. At the same time, I am just counting down the days until I decorate my house for Hallowe’en and get ready for the Trick or Treat and I am planning a contact free candy delivery mechanism. Hallowe’en is our favorite holiday and this year it is on Sunday, which means a have a WHOLE weekend to get my house ready for that magic night with pirate ships, ghosts, spiders, wine, friends and so much more. I hope to see you there. Twenty-one years ago, the Modesto area music scene was amazing. So amazing in fact, that Chris Ricci and I decided to create a celebration event that brought together all of our different genres of music at one event and highlight those bands and people that really made a difference. For many years, we were rich with performing spaces, music houses, plazas filled with people and local radio that really helped promote nation acts that would allow local bands to open. These events like B93 Summerfest, XFest, Downtown Rocks and others would be regional showcases. Here we are today, performance venues ravaged by COVID, corporate radio not showcasing local bands and everything is upside down. We must make a stand Modesto. There is so much talent, from the bluegrass of Oakdale to the Indie sounds of the Shire to the Jazz of downtown and the rock that shines on stages big and small, wherever we can play. Our webcast days may be over, but we need to claw our way back to live music prominence. Sadly, the live music opportunities are rested on the backs of the

restaurants that were hit the hardest during COVID. We need to create! We need new venues! I felt the energy of the crowd when my band Third Party played 10th St Plaza! We need our population to get its’ crap together and get vaccinated so we can all gather again. I attended Bottlerock in Napa where you had to be vaxxed or have a fresh negative. It was full. I just returned from New York City where vaccination proof was required to get into a club, theatre or restaurant. They were full. People will do what they need to do if there is something they want to do. So let’s do this Modesto. The MAMAs are a non-profit organization that will be the champion of live music in our community. We will be coming back to you with ideas, asking for donations and our goal is to make live music a pillar of this creative city we call home. There will be a MAMA Awards on October 19 at the State Theatre, the home of the MAMAs. We are not exactly sure what format it will be, but we will keep you posted and we will celebrate. But please vote for your favorite at www. modestoareamusic.com so we can move this forward and present the Beeler trophy to a great musician. Our region is an area rich in culture. Mixed cultures make life interesting. The more we embrace something that is not familiar, we become closer to the world. Some people say that Globalism is a bad thing, I disagree. The more we are aware of what different cultures need or want, the more we understand. This month, as we ramp up to the creepy and crawly

haunts of Halloween, we look forward to what it means to think beyond the world we live in. Dia de los Muertos has always fascinated me. I’m not a religious person, but the idea that we celebrate those that have passed before us is good. To do this, we have to respect history, traditions and embrace something bigger than ourselves. This month get to know Rebecca Harrington who has really brought DDLM to our community and I hope you enjoy it. Community is what it all gets down to. When you walk into the 7th Street Modesto Market, Chefs of New York, Fuzio, Concetta, Tresettis or any of your favorite places to eat, it is all about hanging with people you know, eating flavors you love and sharing life experiences and maybe eating 4, 8 or 12 Tacos de Birria. My name is Chris Murphy and I have a taco problem. These things are amazing, and if you come out and rock with us Oct 1, you can discover these at the Modesto Market, and fortunately many places around town. But please visit and support our local businesses and places you love, where you feel like family, where people know your grand-baby and sit, shop, hang and enjoy. This is what it’s about friends, feeling like family, in a place with rich culture where we can all be who we are and keep each other safe. Enjoy your October and I hope to see you out and about. Lucy’s Face Painting has been actively involved in Día Del Los Muertos festivals in the City Modesto and Murphy’s Calaveras County since 2017. I look forward to being part of these community events and sharing the culture through my face painting. I love to hear the stories of people remembering and celebrating family members that made a lifelong impact in their lives. Patty is wearing a dress which was passed down from my Tia Victoria Contreras Jessup who started her next journey September 18th, 2019. Victoria was a great role model that inspired me to reach my goals and live life to its fullest. I look forward to future Día De Los Muertos events in the local community.

In Memoriam - Brian Swander

An Artist Has Left By Paul Forakis

Brian Swander slipped away in the cool morning hours on September 17, 2021. He was surrounded by loving, caring friends and his dog Oro, in his remarkable home that he built, with a print room, painting studio, bike restoration and wood shop. In his yard you walked on mosaics, some only partially exposed near fallen Roman columns. You were in Pompei. In the lair of his bike room filled with Raleighs, England seems close. Brian’s effect on our community runs deep. His knowledge of old world craftmanship made him uniquely qualified to work on restoring the McHenry Mansion. He was both old world and new, a true Renaissance Man. All of these attributes speak of his talent, but he was much more. The man was kind and stubborn, he was generous to young artists, musicians and those aspiring to greater heights; he held himself to a high moral standard. Brian helped us all as much as we helped him not because it is easy but rather it is the work we must do together. He so loved his friends that his space was our oasis to rest, talk, play music, enjoy food, play with Oro his dog and the place he could work in and create; and he did! He worked to make the community the place he wanted to live in and his friends were his garden. No matter where we lived, Brian tended us all in his own way. Falling Leaves and Halloween By Jim Christiansen

The season of Falling Leaves and Halloween. In the middle of October is Stanislaus Artist Open Studio, rescheduled 3 times since 2020 to October 16 and 17. Hard copy maps are available from the 40 or so participating artists and downtown galleries. Online, get the map pdf file online at www.stanislausaos.com I am one of the artists on the map, and the Open Studio weekend invites you to visit my home studio on an alley near Graceada Park and MJC. This is where I write this column, design posters, frame my life drawings, paint a bit, and will be sharing my studio spot with fellow artist Richard J. Bradshaw. All artists on Open Studio have art for sale. Some will have snacks, music, art demonstrations. Our local artists work in a variety of media. The event is FREE. The maps are FREE. One of my favorite things during Open Studio is referring visitors to my favorite studio to visit, that of my friend, Renaissance Man, Brian Swander. Accomplished printmaker, painter, musician, theatre set and prop builder, and in my opinion, host of the best after party of Open Studio weekends. Brian passed on September 18 after a long struggle with illness. Just the posts on Facebook show we lost a very valuable partner in the multiple arts community and the overall City of Modesto. Brian Swander, a good friend to many. Mistlin Gallery Autumn Art Festival and gallery fundraiser show will end early in October, and the annual Memorial Medical Complementary Therapy show will take its place opening October 8. The Mistlin Gallery FB and YouTube live program, “Expose Yourself to Art” has revived at a new time and date for Wednesday Nights, the same night as the life drawing group, currently in need of models. of Jonathan Troxler and more artists and classes this month. Peer Recovery Art Project has the art of Nadia Irizarry featured, with other artists, and Open Mic and other activities going on. Mary Scheinuck featured artist at the Kruse-Lucas Gallery on Tully across from MJC. The MJC Gallery is reopened. Rita Barbano will replace me as the featured artist at Barkin Dog Grill this month. Other Art Block areas to consider, Picasso’s Gourmet Deli and Gallery, Beads of Contentment. Art Walk soft opening through September saw the reappearance of more artists and venues for Third Thursday. In addition to Dragonfly Art for Life, Preservation Coffee, Chartreuse Muse, marked by the yellow balloons, the corner at Tresetti’s sidewalk artists are back. Peer Recovery Art Project opened for the night. I believe there was art at Ralston’s Goat. Next Third Thursday is October 21, and artists and venues interested in joining up and supporting the official Art Walk effort, look to announcements ahead of the 2022 season. End of the Month, Cricket’s Hope will host its 9th Annual “Art of Hope” event on October 28. The project supports the ARK – Art Restores Kids Program and features local

artists matched up for their interpretation of children’s images from the ARK artists. Inspirational program. Information: www.https// crickets-hope.org Graffiti USA Museum Open House is October 2 and 3. 10 Am to 5 pm on both days. www.graffitiusamuseum.com

If your friend asks you “Wanna go to the Lumberyard?”, and you respond “No, I don’t really want to go to Home Depot today,” you are gravely misinformed! Lumberyard Cellars is a new wine bar in Escalon, and yes, you do want to go. Derick and Megan Webb are a husband and wife team with a passion for wine. Derick is the winemaker who studied at Modesto Junior College before getting his BA in Enology at Fresno State. He finds joy in sourcing the yummiest grapes to bring you an excellent wine. It’s called “Lumberyard Cellars” to pay homage to the building it once was. Any home-town Escalonian knows that the beautiful red barn building used to be the local lumberyard, and despite it being many things since those grand ol’ days, the lot is still known as the Lumberyard. Megan grew up in Escalon so it just made sense for the Webbs to create Lumberyard here and let their roots dig in and multiply. The labels on the bottles might be plain, but don’t let that fool you, the liquid in the bottle is not plain at all. Try all his wines for the low tasting fee of $10. We think you will love the light, refreshing Sauvignon Blanc the best, but the Rose was equally as crisp on a warm summer day. Since summer lasts 9 months here in the Valley, feel free to come sip a glass right up until Halloween and purchase a few bottles to share with your loved ones over the holiday while you’re there. If you swing by with a friend who isn’t much into wine, that’s ok. I bet you can bring them to the wine side with the oh-so-delectable house-made sangria. It’s mixed daily with seasonal fruit so you will never have the same glass twice. If

8

that doesn’t do the trick, they carry Stella Artois and Oakdale’s Last Call Brewing to satiate the taste buds of your beer drinkers. Get a charcuterie board with your tasting for only $15, which features some of the best the Valley has to offer like Hilmar Cheese, Nut Up Industries, Stuyt Dairy, World Food Products, and Fiscalini Cheese. They easily feed two people. Seating inside or outside is very posh and comfortable. Squishy couches or high stools are your inside choices, and if you sit outside on the patio furniture covered from the sun, surrounded by gorgeous twinkle lights, you’ll feel very special indeed. It’s relaxed enough for drinks with your friends and romantic enough for a date night. Derick and Megan want you to know that everyone is welcome at the Lumberyard; their goal was to create a friendly welcoming wine bar where you feel appreciated and like you belong. We certainly felt like we belonged, so we can attest that they have succeeded and I’m sure as they continue to grow that feeling will only become stronger. Food trucks often park for the evening as well, and monthly concerts are in the works. Follow them on Facebook or Instagram for more information as those plans unfold. They’re also having a grand opening on October 16th from 12-4 pm, celebrating all four businesses in the lumberyard building: Pencie & Ginger, Studio Off Main, Total Dairy Solutions and of course, Lumberyard Cellars. There’ll be a selfie station and a dessert bar, yum, so don’t miss this fun afternoon. For real, try the sangria! You will fall in love. And remember to tag #modestoview in your photos for a chance to end up in the magazine! Drink responsibly and sip on, friends! Lumberyard Cellars, 1455 First Street #4, Escalon. 209-857-6181

Post Pandemic Renaissance

MAMA VIEW Historically after a pandemic or any lifealtering event on a major scale happens there is an explosion in creativity. We are not there yet(though I am looking forward to it) but we have seen many of our fantastic local entertainers back out and performing with a newfound joy. Hopefully, we will continue to be able to see these bands do what they love and be entertained by them and if we are lucky there will be volumes of new music to grace our ears in the near future. The Modesto Area Music Awards will return after a year-long hiatus and hope to bring the pomp and circumstance that we have all come to know and love from the yearly awards show. There have been some changes with this year’s awards, first, the categories have been cut back to 14. The Award show is being held outdoors this year in order to accommodate the expected attendance and keep the risk of spreading Covid to a minimum. Mamanees and their guest are invited to attend the event which will be staged in front of the State Theatre on Tuesday, October 19th and begin at 6:30 pm. State and CDC guidelines will

By Middagh Goodwin

be followed, masks are encouraged and proof of vaccination or negative test may be required. We are narrowing down who will perform this year, they will showcase a mix of what the 209 has to offer. Voting went live on September 15th and you will continue to be able to cast your vote until October 17th at 11:59 pm. Remember you only get one vote and must verify your email address for it to count. Take your time and go through all the categories and choose who you think should go home with the coveted carhop statue, you are the academy and your votes choose the winners. Good luck and congratulations to all the mamanees. I always suggest you go out and check out as many of the artists as you can along with the venues that support live local music(you might just find a new favorite.) Several mamanees have gigs scheduled at Ralston’s Goat, Rivet’s, P Wexford’s, Nino’s in Modesto, Cru and Udder Place in Turlock just to name a few over the next 3 weeks leading up to the awards show. Sometimes the best things are on the other side of the tracks. But interestingly, the other side of the tracks is relative from where you are and in fact, wherever you are is the right side of the tracks. One if these places that checks every box is the 7th Street Market. Located between F and E streets, it is along the railroad tracks. Pulling in the parking lot, you see a cool outdoor patio, with amazingly enough, a built-in stage. This pretty much tells you all you need to know, great food, good company, good community and live music. Community is really what it is all about. The 7th Modesto Market has a history reaching back to 1849 with the Chinn family in Truckee, later moving to Isleton in 1900. Patrick Chinn is a 4th generation Californian store owner and started working in the store when he was 8. The family market sign that dates back to the 1800s is on the wall and the 100 year old cash register they used is proudly on display. After nearly 100 years of operation in Isleton the family store was sold. After a brief foray into the golf industry, Patrick connected with the Rinaldi’s Market in Linden and got the bug to open his own market and wanted to create a unique place, with hard to find specialty products with a huge selection of indie craft beers and a meat counter. People soon discovered this amazing variety, the curated selections and Patrick would even drive to San Diego to get some craft brew favorites. Today, the store is so much more, but it is still focused on relationships, high quality and their own brewery. Three years ago, Persuasion Brewery was created and there will be celebration events this month. Brewmaster Jonas Dixon has been creating some great new tastes, including a Cherry Rhubarb Pie Sour beer that will debut October 1. We got a sneak taste and it is amazing. L.J. Combs who large scale beer making experience has been working hard to increase the brewery’s capacity as they expand their flavor offerings. The heart of the market is the bar, with 20 different

offerings on tap and is the store’s social center. With one or two tastes, Patrick and the other bartenders are confident that there will be something for everyone there. Over the last few years, the beer selection has expanded, the deli has gotten busier and the meat counter is one of the best in the region with everything from grass fed Carne Asada, pre-prepped Tri tips to big giant Tomahawk steaks and specialties from Niman Ranch. One of the Market’s not-so-secret weapons is Sandra Rios, who creates entrées on a regular basis, steak and fries nights, burger specials and one of the most amazing things ever, Birria Tacos. I have a confession, a year ago ago, I was not really hip to Tacos de Birria. Well, I was the poorer for not knowing about these delicious Birria stew-dipped and pan fried tacos. Sandra’s are out of this world and now I am a junkie. They come in a plate of 4 and once you have one, you will be hooked. You need to stay tuned to their

Instagram to know what days they are being made. Our band Third Party will be playing on October 1st to celebrate the 3rd Anniversary and these tacos are on the menu. You won’t want to miss these and you can enjoy them with your beer out on the patio built by Mark Runnels and enjoy with the music. 7th St Market has become the go-to place for specialty hard to find Mexican and Asian foods, amazing meat counter and one of the largest selections of craft beer anywhere. This is truly a small world of amazing tastes with a staff that can really lead you in the right direction. Customers are dedicated, the staff is very attentive to what the needs are and are really helpful. The wall of beer coolers has just about every flavor you can think of from light Pilsners, IPAs, fruity flavors and stouts and porters.

There are a couple of leather chairs so you can sit and contemplate all of the choices. Long time Market regular Chad Johnson explains it this way, “The Market on 7th street is a Modesto treasure. For years they have been my favorite place for everything I need. I come here for a quick sandwich at lunch, groceries for dinner and for the freshest beer selection in town. Over the years I’ve watched it grow to become a fun, social space that serves up live, local music, Persuasion Brewing and Sandra’s amazing cooking. Rebecca Harrington By Chris Murphy

Modesto is fortunate to have people in town that are super volunteers and really care about our community. These volunteers work hard to do something special and make things happen, Rebecca is one of those people. She has been active in the community throughout her life from Modesto HS, MJC to American GI Forum. She has worked for a local school district assisting families to understand how to help their children and as an advocate for women’s healthcare. I got to know Rebecca through her work with Patty Castillo Davis and the 100% free to the community event in Downtown Modesto, Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). As with so many of our local events, COVID-19 has played a hand in the cancellation of this years’ event. They had planned on moving the event to Lakewood Cemetery in Hughson, but that was not to be. I felt it was important to talk about this important cultural event in our city and county that is rich in the Latino culture. Many people will still celebrate and create Ofrendas (altars) on their own. There are those who may not partake of the same or any religion, they will find the celebration of Día de Los Muertos a fascinating blend of art and culture as the community pays reverence to honor their family and friends who have passed. There has been no time that this tradition holds more value than this past year. We wanted to catch up with Rebecca, and despite many medical setbacks. She is still the driving force in our community, and

14

we asked her to share why these events mean so much and why we should celebrate in our own way. Let’s get to know Rebecca. ModestoView: What has driven you to continue to volunteer in our community and make a difference? Rebecca Harrington: I started my road to volunteerism while a student at Modesto HS. I recognized a need to help those who felt they did not have a voice in the community. At the time we did this through community theatre group we created to share the Latino experience. I continued to help others throughout the years in back-

ground as I raised my family. Once my own children were grown, I took a more active role in the community by participating in local community organizations and work. MV: Where did you grow up? RH: I am born and raised in Modesto. My family came to Modesto in 1928, my father and his brothers all attended Modesto HS. MV: What made you originally want to get involved in community service? RH: My grandmother always reminded me to never forget where we I came from.

My roots came from Mexico, where I traveled after graduating high school. She asked me to go to Mexico to see where she was born, learn to speak, read, and write Spanish well enough that I was asked what part of Mexico I was from. It was an eye opener to see why so many people immigrated from there to here, the United States. MV: Why is Día de Los Muertos so captivating to so many? RH: The basis of it comes from the celebration of All Saints Day and All Souls Day. The Mesoamerican culture of Mexico revered its ancestors, when the Spanish came to their country with the Catholic religion it morphed into something more which became Día de Los Muertos which is recognized by UNESCO.

MV: In years past, the altars downtown have been so elaborate, what do the altars mean and what purpose do they serve? RH: It is the way to remember our loved ones who have passed from this physical world to the next world (heaven). We believe that they never leave us and are with us like a guardian angel. We recognize the signs, a butterfly, a hummingbird, or scent that brings them back to us in thought. The Ofrenda (altar) is a representation of who they were and the things they loved in life. The marigold is used to guide them back to this world, the food to feed their souls while here and the things they loved so they know we have not forgotten them. MV: How important is it that Modesto and our surrounding areas embrace our different cultures? RH: We all have roots to another country, in sharing our differences we find out how much we truly are alike. When we open our minds, we open our hearts and to each other. There is so much more to us all than what we live. Through sharing our cultures with one another, we are taking a virtual journey to other countries without leaving our home. able to travel, we bring to them a glimpse of the world through sight, sound, music, and food. MV: What has been one of our favorite memories from past Muertos events? RH: The beginning, 2016 in bringing a free event to the community that many said it couldn’t be done. I love a challenge. We started out small, and the event took on a life of its own and in 2019 I believe we had well over 12,000 people attend the days long event. I love the vendors, music, ballet folkloric dancers, and the beautiful colors of the event. It’s a rush for me and that one day I completely forget what ails me and my soul is free from pain. MV: How would you like this to evolve as we move forward and what can people do to embrace our cultures? RH: I would like to see our many cultures bring their special events to the community of Stanislaus County and be a part of the local museum. So many have contributed to our community, and they have a story to share. It is through understanding that we become better neighbors to one another and to the future of our children.

MV: What impact did the Disney film Coco have on the recognition for Día de Los Muertos? RH: The movie Coco brought Día de Los Muertos to mainstream America. Anytime Disney does a film, it reaches so many in a way that we could not do individually. The movie explained why we celebrate this day and that we should never forget out loved ones who have passed. They are as much a part of who we are even though they have left the physical world. Coco told us how important family is and should always be, it was by far one of the best movies made to share cultural traditions. MV: Describe your ideal day in Modesto. RH: My ideal day would be walking in downtown and seeing the many cultures in our community represented in a heritage center that celebrate who we were, who we are and who we will become in the future. A community that embraces and celebrates all of us no matter where our ancestors immigrated from. MV: Beatles or Stones? RH: The Beatles are my favorite, I love how their music style changed through the years, Love the White Album. I am also a fan of Queen, so many of their songs are timeless. MV: How do people connect with your for future events? Rebecca Harrington, email: ddlmstan209@gmail.com and (209) 585-6590. We have many volunteer opportunities when we organize events. Student clubs that volunteered 4 hours and 10 students received a donation to their club and the amazing experience of giving back. It is an experience they will never forget. This event is 100% funded by sponsors and donations. American GI Forum is a nonprofit organization, Veterans in Community Advocacy, helping Veterans and the underserved. If you’ve always been a fan of the spooky and creepy crawlies around Halloween time, there’s a chance you were like me and reading ghost stories and googling “Haunted Places in Modesto” as a kid. No? Not your thing? Well maybe now’s the time to learn! Here are my favorite SpOOoOoKy stories from two of the most historical and old places in Modesto.

The Modesto High School Auditorium

(Go Panthers!) is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of a young student at the school. Now, even the creaky chairs and old red velvet is enough to make you feel like there’s something spooky about this hallowed hall, but the story goes that he fell from the top balcony and died when his head struck the concrete floor below. He’s often been seen walking back and forth on the balcony and moaning and knocking from the halls beneath the main building. If you were a student at Modesto High, you know that there is a staircase that has been locked to the basement for many years, I often tried to sneak in to hear the noises or catch a glimpse, but to no avail. Who knows what happened to the young man all those years ago, but at least he’s at the best high school in town!

The McHenry Museum and former Modesto Library, According to the Modesto Bee is said to be haunted by a friendly, crafty ghost that worked tirelessly on a loom in the basement. According to Heidi Warner, the ghost kept adding more than half a dozen inches to the cloth over time and only stopped weaving in 2007 when the loom was destroyed in a fire…but while it was on display at the museum, the story went: “This loom, believed to have been used on a local ranch in the 1800s, was brought to the museum some years ago. When it was set up, about four inches of cloth was woven. Over the years, the length of the cloth has grown. To this day, no one has been seen operating the loom, yet the work apparently continues.” Maybe the ghost was one of the original crafters in town inspiring events like ModShop and the Farmer’s Market. Nevertheless, we are so excited that the McHenry Museum is back open for visitors! Get your old time-y spooks and learn more about our wonderful community by checking out the museum open Friday through Sunday 12 to 4 PM. See you there! more BIG View continued on page 18 FOLLOW US:

One of the things that I really admire about this community, are all the great things that people do to help other people and the community at large. Many of these folks do this as philanthropy and receive no benefit other than the joy of the work and the outcome. Last year, James Boggetti said to his son, George, then 8, that they would sell pumpkins that they would raise together for his college fund. As this began, the pandemic hit. The conversation changed, as it was obvious there was a lot of need, especially from the first responders. Not breaking his promise, Dad said to James, “I think the first responders need some help to take care of the community”. James agreed. So, last year saw the birth of a new pumpkin stand. It will again appear next to the Twin River Saloon and is largely self-service, although sometimes manned by George (now 9), and his siblings Preston and Sutton (both now 6). In its first year, they raised, $6,300.00 for first responders, benefitting; Woodland Avenue Fire, Modesto Police, Stanislaus Sherriff ’s Department and California Highway Patrol. Sheriff Dirkse says, “We have a great community with strong support for law enforcement and first responders. The Boggetti kids are a great example of this, and we are humbled by their selfless efforts.” “I like doing the right thing”, says George, “It makes me happy to see people smile”. In asking him how involved they are in the process, he tells me that from planting, to watering, harvesting and selling, they are involved all the way through the process, adding “my brother and sister like to cut the pumpkin stems”. I asked him if there was a better salesman in the group, “Me!” he said excitedly, “but my brother and sister are good too” The stand again will be at 7000 Maze Blvd and will open the first week of October and will be open until the 31st. It is self-service and is easily accessible with a drop box for payment, so yes, you are on your honor. Some weekends you may run into young George, Preston or Sutton, they may give you some pumpkin advice. George assures me they have all sizes of pumpkins, concrete pumpkins and even as big as me.. that may be difficult, but his enthusiasm is refreshing. George, Preston and Sutton are great examples of the pure hearts of Modesto. Making the sacrifice to help those, who help the rest of us, is pretty special. Luckily, there are many other inspiring stories, of other wonderful people, who make this place better, softer, kinder and more wonderful. Make it a mini trip, buy a pumpkin, grab some lunch at the Twin River and smile knowing something nice just happened and you played a part in it. FOR MORE MODESTO INFO: www.modestoview.com

High art goes high-tech this month when Opera Modesto returns to the Gallo Center with its first production of the season: Mozart’s final opera ‘The Magic Flute.’ Featuring a cast of about 20 vocalists, the piece is a fairytale full of gorgeous music, comical star turns, laughter, sorrow, and unusual twists and turns that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. True to their often larger-than-life style, OpMo’s staging of this fantasy adventure will employ projection technology covering nearly 900 square feet to form the scenery and set pieces, including the thrilling opening scene in which the hero flees from a digitally rendered dragon - the creation of graphic artist and Modesto native Christopher Flores. They’ve also partnered with another local artist, Shirlee Rudel, whose paintings inspired by nature and mysticism will provide the backdrops for the rest of the opera. Dancers from Central West Ballet will also help bring this surreal narrative to life. Showtimes are October 15 at 7:30 pm and October 17 at 2 pm, with informative lectures on the composing of this opera delivered one hour prior. Tickets run $39$79, available at www.galloarts.org. Coming later this fall is a major Modesto Unplugged showcase. Sunday, November 14 at 2 PM, it’s the return of the one and only Dirty Cello, who have been star headliners of my series for over eight years. Classical cellist Rebecca Roudman has

performed with the Modesto Symphony Orchestra, and has contributed to motion picture soundtracks including ‘Looper’ and ‘Kill The Messenger’ (the latter of which, incidentally, starred Modesto native Jeremy Renner.) Dirty Cello is Rebecca’s let-herhorsehair-down project, where she takes her instrument down more fun avenues such as blues, bluegrass and classic rock, accompanied by Jason Eckl on guitar and a rotating cast of musicians. Rebecca doesn’t just get the Led out - she shreds the Led out. The band also composes original songs and offers some flavors of Celtic and Eastern European music. This ensemble whips up a standing ovation whenever they come through town. Adding to the fun of the afternoon will be two 2021 Modesto Area Music Award nominees: True South, one of Modesto’s finest original music party bands with lots of country-rock and bluesy offerings; and youth rockers Float On, who I so enjoyed having at my last VMI concert that I invited them to serve as the regular opening band for my showcases there. We’ll be in the Valley Music Institute building at 1220 J St. Doors open at 1:30, $20 cash only at the door, and you can reserve seats at modestounplugged@ yahoo.com or 209-543-5306. SONG WRITER VIEW

Every Fall the local entertainment community comes together to celebrate their achievements. Hip hop artists rub elbows with Punk Rock and Country players and Comedians share shop talk with Opera singers. It’s the one time of the year that all of these eclectic parts come together as a whole for the Modesto Area Music Association awards show. Folks dress in their finery and share libations and stories and connect in a neutral space where the most nominated and the novice stand in the same long line at the concession area. It’s a night full of reflection, perception, rejection and reception. And it’s what we deserve. There has been a marvelous cultivation of creativity in this fertile soil of the Central Valley and we continue to enjoy its legacy and this year’s event promises to boast not only the accolades of the best of the genres but a reunification of a family separated by unparalleled circumstances. (At press time) for this outdoor event all prevailing rules by the CDC and state mandates shall be adhered to, masks, proof of vaccination and/or proof of negative COVID test is required for all attendees 12 and older. My personal relationship with MAMA is long and fond. I had been disheartened at a 13 year losing streak and felt sweet astonishment at a win as a band member then a solo artist and finally as a band leader. The real takeaway is seeing what goes into making this all work. And the behind the scenes before ballots go live and the show’s first downbeat. You. You are what it takes. Without the votes from the audience and patrons and enthusiasts there is no MAMA anything. The entertainment is a sure thing, ever changing in its quality and approach. The loyal fans and followers who support the live entertainment are the souls of this scene. Unplugged is the category I am nominated

in as a solo artist. This primarily acoustic category includes multi genres and features singer Songwriters and cover artists alike. My fellow nominees are silky voiced gentlemen, tweens, teens and an AARP Queen (wink). My vote was cast for seasoned artist Candace Lamb who hails from Merced-her life experience is reflected in her songs which make her performances credible, you really believe she has lived all those emotions she sings about. My band co founded with Steve Ashman and David Rogers-A Gathering of the Vibes is nominated in the Blue Collar category, one of only two groups with female singers at the lead. There are thousands of years of fantastic music experience represented with these ten nominees. Go and listen online to all the choices before you vote. You will be astounded by how deep the talent pool flows in our area. Thank you for giving us the reason to sing our songs. There are very few people in the world left that participated, created and witnessed the birth of Rock and Roll. Modesto is fortunate to have been the home of one such person, KC Don Juan Maddox of the legendary Maddox Brothers & Rose. Quite simply, in 1938, the first notes of what would become Rock n Roll, were played by Fred Maddox, slapping the strings of his upright bass on KTRB Radio. The Maddox family made their way to Modesto to pick fruit during the dust bowl era and music was the escape from the labors of farm work. After World War II, the Maddox family music was all over the airwaves with the whip smart vocals and banter of Rose Maddox and Don Maddox, the lead fiddle player. Their music was upbeat and fun at that time called Hillbilly Boogie. They toured across the USA, inspiring musicians and bands including a young Elvis Presley and his band the Blue Moon boys. Bass player Bill Black idolized Fred Maddox and they slapping bass would make a huge noise in Elvis’ That’s All Right Mama. Don and the Maddox Brothers and rose would perform through the 1950s and when Rose left to become a solo artist, Don took his earnings and moved to Oregon to raise cattle and occasionally playing all over the world. Don Maddox was honored at the Modesto Area Music Awards with a lifetime achievement in 2013 where he performed with local all-star Rockabilly line up and

then teaming up with Rockabilly icon Deke Dickerson at a show at Hero’s. Don never really believed the impact that his music had on Rock n Roll and even referenced me in the Ken Burns’ documentary on Country Music. Don was a legends’ legend, idolized by the musicians that came behind him like Marty Stuart, and he wisecracked through his life, bold and living fully until his passing on September 12 at 98 years old. Today, this music lives on around the world with the Stray Cats, Reverend Horton Heat, Big Sandy and also with our local Rockabilly movement with Tony T and the Pendletons, the slapping bass of Amie Estelle, Rockin’ Rick & the Rhythm Wranglers, the Central Valley Greasers and the legendary Roddy Jackson who still travels the world playing Rockabilly. ModestoView is supporting twice monthly Rockabilly showcases at the Speakeasy that will make you want to get up and dance. To learn more about our Rockabilly and local music history, please check out: www.modestomusichistory.com Go see Tony T & the Pendletons and special guests the Rocketz on October 1 and with the Infamous Swanks on October 22 at the Speakeasy presented by MAMA, Trevino’s Barber and ModestoView. Wham-O Fitness

By Efren Martinez

Back in high school, I was known to many of my friends as the “flying flyer”. Unknown to any of us back then were the benefits we got when we gathered to play Frisbee. Many times after a full day of school we would gather at a local park and play 3 fly’s up or better yet just a game of Frisbee. Although our Frisbee games were less than dull we often tried to out trick ourselves. I actually got pretty good at it. My favorite trick was to catch a Frisbee while doing a roundhouse kick while my entire body was in mid-air. Thus how I got the nickname the “Flying Flyer.” Mind you if I was to try and do that today I most likely would not be able to get up off the ground. Yes, it’s been more than a few

years since I’ve been able to leap into the air like gazelle doing gymnastics. Let’s face it we’ve all aged and so has my body. Still, Frisbee fitness can still be had safely without flying through the air to catch a Frisbee. I’m talking about Frisbee Golf. It’s not anything new but has really taken off over the years. Frisbee Golf, also known as Disc Golf, is a great way to get some exercise along with fresh air and that very essential vitamin D. It’s also a way to be able to gather with friends outside and share that group fitness while we are still in this global pandemic. Frisbee Golf is very similar to the game of golf and much more affordable. Honestly, if you’re not looking to become a professional all you need is a Wham-O Frisbee. It’s up to you just how serious you want to get. The main thing is to get out and have fun. Here in Modesto, we have a couple of golf courses to choose from. HISTORY VIEW

The Cemetery” By Harrison Power There are many attributes and that can help set a community apart and make it unique from another – its charm, its great trees, its museums, and landmarks. But one of these destinations, which can be found in most towns of any size, that encompass all the qualities listed above, are its cemeteries! Local cemeteries are often as old if not older than the towns themselves and are the final resting places of prominent figures whose names can be found on street signs and in the history pages. As the ViewCrew ramps up for Halloween, we wanted to highlight the cemeteries we drive by every day or have visited once on occasion, as it is easy to connect cemeteries with ghoulish haunts and grinning ghosts – but there really is so much more to know and appreciate about these places. Scenic Drive outside of downtown Modesto is not home to just “the cemetery” but rather five individually established cemeteries all with their own histories and purposes, previously referred to as the “Silent City.” Throughout these cemeteries you will find and recognize many important

Modesto founders and settlers, including the McHenry family. Acacia Memorial Park was originally established as the Masonic Cemetery in 1872. However the oldest burials here are those of the Laird Family children from Westport, whose graves were moved once the cemetery was established and selling plots. The Modesto Pioneer Cemetery was originally five acres purchased in 1872, and was established as the Odd Fellows Cemetery. While the Odd Fellows established their cemetery the same year as their Mason counterparts, the land included the remains of an earlier family cemetery, the McLean Family, with baby

While many Modestans and people in the area may opt to move in to one of the cemeteries discussed above, the other local destination is Lakewood Memorial Park, located just outside the southeastern boundary of town toward Empire and Hughson. Lakewood has its roots as a five acre pioneer cemetery, established in the 1850’s. The oldest marked grave here is that of Mary Hudleson, who died April 13, 1855. But the oldest section of the cemetery was also originally the burial site of numerous settlers marked with wooden markers that have been lost to time. Among prominent Elvira T. McLean being the oldest on-site burials here are Florence Thompson (the burial here in 1856. The Modesto Cemetery, Migrant Mother photographed by Dorothea originally laid out in 1872 as the Modesto Lange), former area mayors and superviCitizens Cemetery, holds the final resting sors, George and Dorothy Lucas (parents of place of many early Modesto and Stanislaus George Lucas), and Dean Jagger (General County settlers. ALL AGES VIEW By Grace McNamara

Welcome

By Chris Murphy It has been many years since we launched ModestoView Magazine in 2006. I really believe that Modesto will only be great if our youth enjoy growing up here. It is up to us as parents to pay attention and it is our job to build a city where people want to come back. Our first All Ages editor was Madison Murphy, now Leupp in 2006. Our next was Abigail Murphy (Power) in 2007. Leia Johnson took over in 2013 and Sofia Johnson has been with us for the last few years. Madison and Abigail have both successful returned to Modesto and we hope the Johnson girls will do the same after college. We welcome Grace McNamara to this page and we are very excited to see Modesto through her eyes and that we all pay attention. #modestofuture

Hello Modesto! My name is Grace McNamara.

I am the new writer for the All Ages View column. As you all know, Sofia Johnson, a good friend of mine, was the last writer. We will miss her and wish her well at Cal Poly! I am so excited to be following in her footsteps and take over. I am happy to get this opportunity, and I can’t wait to share with you all the love I have for this wonderful city we live in. First, I’d

like to introduce myself. I am currently 15 years old. I am a Sophomore at Downey High School. One of my favorite things to do is dance. Since I was four years old, I’ve been dancing, and I am now on my high school dance team. Danceline is our schools’ dance team that performs at our home Downey games! There’s nothing better than cheering on your home team with your fellow peers, so come to a game under those Friday night lights! I also recently joined our schools’ water polo team. School sports are a great way to try something new and get your body moving! This season, schools will be offering tennis, football, volleyball, polo, golf, and cross country! It is excellent to all stay involved actively. Since summer has come to an end, it can be hard to get back into the swing of things. Many of us, including myself, tend to feel stressed out, whether with work, school, or new environments. We need to remember that our mental health comes first! It is good to take breaks and have balance. Something I like to do when I’m stressed is to invite a friend and go downtown! Downtown is my absolute favorite area of Modesto! One of my favorite places to unwind is Cafe Deva. It’s such a comforting and welcoming place. Plus, the coffee and food are delicious! Deva is located on 1202 J Street. I highly recommend heading over here! I hope everyone had a wonderful summer and is looking forward to this upcoming autumn!

ZEN VIEW Necessity

By Mary Layton

I knew a wise man who always used to ask: “Is it necessary?” - I think this is a really good question that I can apply to anything I think or do all day long! It is amazing when you find out that a lot of what we think or worry about, do or buy isn’t really necessary. So much of what we do or say is out of habit. Often we don’t even have a clue why we do what we do. We live in challenging times to say the least, new developments of any kind are unfolding in all areas of our lives. Some of us had to make sacrifices in our routine activities, change jobs, figure out new livelihoods and budgets. We had to adjust and learn to accept all kinds of losses. Things have become more pressing. Most of us find ourselves busier than ever, trying to get our business taken care of in a timely fashion so that we can deal with the next thing that needs to be done. We may feel exhausted and irritable. There is a sense that everyone does what they deem to be the right approach to many

of our current issues. The world has changed in front of our eyes very quickly. For many people it has brought hardship, for some great economic opportunity. Sometimes desperation can be a gift because it mobilizes us to venture out of our comfort zone and take a leap of faith. There’s growth in necessity. We may discover that we had used our talents in such insufficient ways before. Necessity brings us in touch with our talents and our true potential. Doing something out of necessity does away with the things that are superfluous. We may find it necessary to be kinder and more nurturing to ourselves and others. It may be necessary to get some rest, or go for a walk in this lovely Fall weather. To cook something delicious. Listen to music. Feed our spirit with good things, like laughter and play, movement and fun. For more info go to taichi4modesto.com or call (209) 572-4518

MODESTO’S MURALS,

OUR OPEN-AIR GALLERIES

by Salvatore Salerno Poet Laureate of the City of Modesto

By Chris Murphy

Downtown Modesto features an amazing variety of murals celebrating so much of Modesto’s culture. This all got going with the original Aaron Vickery Deuce Coupe at 13th and J Streets. Then more appeared with a ’57 Chevy at the Modesto Chamber of Commerce, a large scale mural celebrating Royal Robins on Camp 4, and the beautiful Corezon de la Valle at 15th and J and many others followed and artist from all of the the world have painted in our city. Murals have even spread up McHenry. I was really proud to be part the Community Mural team that put up Graffiti-themed murals, Murals in MoTown captured our hometown themes and DoMo walls lead by Aaron Vickery, converted a main alley into an art alley. Now we are moving on, block by block with amazing artistic creations that will amaze both people in town and those visiting from elsewhere. Let’s check out what is happening this year and enjoy a mural-themed poem from Modesto’s Poet Laureate Salvatore Salerno.

DoMo Walls goes Triple

By Stephanie Foster, DoMo Partnership DoMo Walls, downtown Modesto’s international mural festival, is looking a little different this year under COVID conditions; we’ve scaled down our international call to national artists only to avoid unnecessary international air travel. This year, three artists will paint three different walls in unique locations in downtown Modesto starting September 30th and finishing up in the first week of October. The artists, from Denver, CO, Dallas, TX and Modesto, will be given more space than past festival mural events, allowing onlookers to enjoy the artists’ work while not encouraging multiple days of dense, heavy gathering. Additionally, DoMo First Fridays season finale is being planned for October 3rd, 6-10pm, with a watchful eye on CDC guidelines for large outdoor public gatherings. First Fridays will be a great opportunity to come out and observe mural installations along the J Street corridor while enjoying art and crafts, music, dining and dancing in the streets and taking advantage of downtown’s wonderful restaurant patios and parklets.

Public art plays a riff on democracy, Since it is by the artists, for the people, and of what Modestans know and love. Do make some time, as you go around town, to meander from your business rounds or on your way to that movie, favorite restaurant or pub, coffeeshop or gallery, to step around corners, head into alleys, to meet and greet the walls painted for you. How bold they are, what a dazzling array! Some pay homage to hometown heroes— Royal Robbins and his mountainous ascents, George Lucas and his monuments of film, and a tribute to firefighters, heroes every day. Others celebrate icons of our history— the Modesto Arch, the hillside poppy fields, the bountiful harvests of orchards and crops, the locomotive that pulls them to market, a cool ’57 Chevy and other classic rides. Even some businesses got in the game. Have you dined beneath a harvest moon dog or been ushered in by the theatre harlequin? Some murals are ablaze with brazen patterns, abstract swirls, impossible meaning to know, while others tease you to go figure. Why is that fierce woman snarling? Why is that cool monkey grinning? Machine, human, and animals—huh? There’s a lion, a tiger, a parrot, oh my list is shy of six dozen more murals, I’m sure, but that’s just what your curiosity’s for! Go about your business in Motown, folks, but take your leisure to visit galleries of the open air, bright displays always there, ever free, just linger a while and wonder anewat the color-wild art of democracy.
