GREETING VIEW

Happy Rocktober Modesto!

October is magic in so many ways.   The moon is magic as it brings out our fun fall weather and an especially spooky Hallow een.  Halloween is a National holiday at our house and the spooky spirit and shouts of “Trick or Treat” are in the air.  Many of our favorite events have returned and there are so many spooky things to do this month.  Check out our BigView and check out the Haunted Happenings.    The evenings are magic as the cool breezes bring some much needed natural air con ditioning to our porches and patios and the taste of fall flavors is bold and exciting as our local restaurants, like Burley’s that we are featuring, turn to their fall menus. The sound of live music wafts through the air.  From Jazz, to blues to rock to indie, there is something for everyone in Modesto.   This month we Vote for MAMA and celebrate our Modesto area music scene and our musicians.   I would say that Modesto earning a C+ on our live music scene this year.  We have lost some of our music houses that regularly brought in touring bands, some due to COVID and some due to regulations and operating cost.  We need to focus and turn this around.  The MAMA Association has been supporting Music in the Plaza, Blue Monday, Rockin Holiday, Rockabilly at the Speakeasy and projects with Patty Castillo Davis to help keep our

community rockin’. Middagh Goodwin is at the helm, making sure our local bands are networked, recognized and so much more.  MAMA would not happen without him.   Please take a minute to vote at www. modestoareamusic.com and try to get out to an open mic, jam, blues or country ses sion and support our local bands.  Creative cities are the vibrant cities of the future and love music is a big part of this.      Modesto, we have some choices to make.   Just the basic fact that you are reading ModestoView, you have already made the choice to celebrate the best of Modesto by enjoying the positive things about our community and I am sure you already lend a hand.  There are two basic paths forward in challenging economic times.  One, we cut everything to the bone and whither slowly.  Or we put our foot on the gas and invest in our arts, culture, and our people to build our city and attract new business and people. I choose the latter, and that is why I am supporting Measure H.  As you know, we don’t do politics or hard news here in ModestoView, but this is a chance to decide our cultural direction.  A community is so much more than police and fire, which are both important and necessary, but it is who we are and what makes us different that we need to focus on.  Let’s push the positive, invest in our

local economy and help build up our local businesses that make Modesto come to life.  I know we can do it and it will cost us ONE cent per dollar.  We can do it, and the busi nesses that advertise here in ModestoView will appreciate it.  Let’s invest and live local. October 1st is Pride in the Park.  It is really important that we all continue to stand together for equality for all as October is LGBTQ+ History Month and we as a com munity, need to support the rights of each of us to be who we want and love who we want to love all the time. Period.

I hope to see you out and about at one of our local restaurants, shows or at our parks and events.  It is so great to connect with you all and learn about what you like or want to see here in the pages of ModestoView.

The Great Potsticker Hunt

The Murphys 6th Annual Witch Walk:

Eat, Drink & Be Wicked!

Calaveras County is a 90-ish minute drive north-east of Modesto, and boasts some spectacular things to do and see, includ ing being the home of the little gold-rush town of Murphys. You’ll notice as you walk around enjoying the sights and sounds that Murphys looks as if “gothic” met “western” to create the Victorianesque town–but hon estly, isn’t that what “Victorian” is? The high collars, the lace, the cameo brooches, the finesse and elegance wrapped ever so gently with macabre: because the introduction of the camera brought with it a fascination for photos of the dead and an obsession with taxidermy. As if the aesthetic wasn’t enticing enough for Murphys, “Calaveras’’ is Spanish for “skulls”. So Murphys Cali fornia is the perfect location for an annual Witch Walk. And oh, did we mention all the libations at your fingertips?! On Main Street alone there are 25 tasting rooms, and a handful more within a radius of 5 miles. Honestly, you shouldn’t be caught dead missing the 6th Annual Murphys Witch Walk.

N ow what would lead us to this adventure?  The collective community is still reeling from the closure of the kitchen at Minnie’s.

One of the best things I have ever eaten is the Minnie’s Potsticker, and that combined with Suzanna Lau’s service and the ever toxic Jerk from Josie, Diane and Sherri, made for a wonderful evening, supported by the special fried rice, BBQ pork and more.  But alas, this is no longer.

From 11am-8pm on Saturday, October 15th, Main Street will be transformed into a *free and family-friendly* witchy maker’s market. While the storefronts, restau rants and tasting rooms are your ultimate destinations, I guarantee you’re going to complete all your Halloween (or for your traditionalists, Samhain), and maybe even your upcoming holiday shopping between your stops. The Murphys Witch Walk Wicked Goods Bizarre Bazaar features 40 vendors with booths at two locations, plus some of the stores are hosting their own pop-up shops, so I know you will find

Dynasty and others that we have missed.  We have found some that are close, but not all the way.   But here is where we need your help. What do you think?  For those of you that just love Potstickers, we need you to scour our area and help us find the best Potsticker. You may like it fried or steamed, but tell us what you love and why you love it.

something for everyone from your niece to your Father-in-law, taking into account your niece and Father-in-law are Wednesday and Gomez Addams.

I am on a mission to find the replacement to all of these treats, and in particular the Potsticker. This year, we have been sampling many different locations and have some great options.  Some that are more fried, some that are steamed and some that are both steamed and finished in the pan.  But how close are they to Minnie’s.   So far we have been check ing out the offerings from Ming’s, ShangriLa, China Gate, East China Town, China Express, Bejing, Fat Wong, Tokyo Express, Coaches Corner and more.  Still to check out are Imperial Garden, House of Potsticker,

You are encouraged to dress up as your fa vorite witch or warlock (though no costume will be frowned upon, the point is to dress up and have fun!). With the release of Hocus Pocus 2, I expect to see quite a few groups of Sanderson sisters. Come dressed as your favorite Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings characters, or maybe as Willow from Buffy, Melisandre from Game of Thrones or Saman tha Stephens from Bewitched. Get creative and make some memories! The costumes are fun for wearers and lookers alike and are also a big part of the great Witch Walk experi ence.

But here is where it gets tricky.  Who else also has a bar to find that kind of cocktail that goes with great Chinese food.  Who has a great Mai Tai? Who has custom glasses to make your experience better?  Who makes a great origi nal Mai Tai, Scorpion, or Zombie?  Can we create the whole package?  The bar at Shangri La?  The cocktails at Bejing?  Let’s explore the exotic Polynesian and Chinese offerings and see what’s out there.  We know that Minnie’s still makes the amaz ing Jerk and their other specialties, but we should be making sure that our local restau rants that try to create a good dining experi ence feel the Modesto love too.  Plus, it is always fun to try something new.

The Murphys Witch Walk was founded in 2016 by Teresa Rodriguez, owner of the Potted Plum, located at 90 Big Trees Road at the corner of Main Street.

Teresa learned about a suc cessful witch-themed com munity costume party held in Livermore as a promo tional endeavor to attract attention to local retailers, and she decided it would be worth hosting one to pro mote retailers that are ‘off the beaten path’ of Main Street. Murphys Witch Walk was born to bring people to enjoy the unique shopping, wine tasting, entertainment, and dining Murphys has to offer. Christopher Buttner, a longtime entertainment and event marketing professional who’s worked on major concert tours to internationallyknown San Francisco costumed festivals, joined the ranks as Co-Owner/Creative and Marketing Director in 2020. The two were made to run this event together-they make it seem effortless and their talents have turned this event from dream to reality year after year.

Over these 10-months, Wyatt continues to receive ongoing treatment and RMHCNC has been integral in helping Wyatt and his family. In Murphys there’s plenty of shade, plenty of space, and plenty of things to eat and drink, and I know they’ll deliver a cackling-good time for your whole coven!

This year, the Murphys Witch Walk is pleased to announce their charity is the Ronald McDonald House Charities

By jove, I think you should even make this your new Halloween tradition and stay the whole weekend! Why? Because there are events hosted the day after too, like the Co lumbia Kate’s Witch Tea in Columbia State Park and the Indigeny Fall Fest in Sonora. MAMA

Who’s Your MAMA?

MAMA 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award - Kyle Barker

Voting for the 22nd Annual Modesto Area Music Awards is life and will continue until 11:59 pm on October 16th. 23 years ago Murphy and Ricci had a little idea to host an awards show highlighting the talent that the great Modesto area had to offer, and the MAMAs were born. Like you we are excited to find out who the winners are going to be on October 18th at the historic State Theatre.

MAMAnees are chosen from a list of suggested nominees on several conditions including but not limited to, how active the artists perform, social media presence nods from bookers, restaurant/club owners, former winners and peers. The list gets narrowed down to 10 in each category. This year we are again keeping things tight with just 13 categories ranging from Alt/Indie to Youth Bands.

There will be 5 categories represented with live performances. This year we are honor ing Kyle Barker singer/keyboardist and owner of Barker’s Music with the Lifetime Achievement Award. On top of that, there will be a special not to be missed medley

performance featuring some of the area’s best songwriters including Marirose Pow ell, Chris Dowd and Patty Castillo Davis.

At the time of printing, there are still sixteen voting days left so go out and catch a MAMAnee or two or three per forming at one or more of the local hot spots regardless if it is an old favorite or someplace brand new, and make cast your vote. Remember at this point the winner is picked by you the music fans so make those votes count.

The non-profit MAMAs team up with many civic organizations, matching up musicians for special events, and music series such as Music in the Plaza and the Rocking Holiday. To get involved email mamarecords209@gmail.com

Please send in your events to info@ modestoview.com so we can help promote and keep track of all you do.

Please vote for your favorites now at www.modestoareamusic.com Voting ends Oct 16 at 11:59 pm

The MAMAs will be live streamed on www.modestoview.com

There are few people in the Modesto area that have been seen and heard singing, playing, introducing, supporting that Kyle Barker.   If you have been to a fundraiser, you have seen the Kyle Barker Band.  If you have been at a Graffiti festival, or out to dinner or at a night club or bar, you have experienced Kyle Barker.   Whether it be a solo gig at the State Theatre on the organ, or backing the amazing Sensations, or any other version of the Kyle Barker band, you have seen his show.

After high school Kyle got married and moved to California and settled in Modesto, in May of 1969, starting a new job at Sherman Clay in McHenry Village selling musical instruments.

Kyle has been performing in Modesto since 1969, and one of his first gigs was at the SOS, Sportsman of Stanislaus.  He ar rived in town on a Wednesday and played his gig on Friday. He played regularly at the SOS until 1975 as the house band.  This was a legendary time at the SOS, when global sports figures and celebrities would be invited guests, like 6 Million $ man, Lee Majors and many others.

During this time he started playing casu als. The Kyle Barker Band with John King and Nic Lemmo formed in 1981.  Penny White came on board in 1984 and the rest is history.

The most notable combination as been with the Sensations, with Penny White, Debby White, Shelly and Claudia Streeter Bellani and others through the years.  Some events will be the full Kyle Barker Band and some will be just a couple.   Kyle has been a regular doing his own thing as a solo performer.

Barker’s Music has been a staple for local musicians for lessons, equipment, advice and so much more.  As a member of North Modesto Kiwanis, Kyle booked the music at the American Graffiti Festival for many years.

The Kyle Barker Band played nearly every nightclub, restaurant, ballroom, or theatre in our region from the Vintage, the Tree Frog, Minnie’s, the SOS and so much more and even as the organist at the State Theatre from time to time.

The band has played corporate and recep tions gigs from the Fairmont Venetian Room in San Francisco to all the Country Clubs and Banquet Halls in the Valley. He is still playing and can be found regularly at the Chef’s of New York.

Needless to say, this is only a fraction of the experiences of Kyle Barker.

We are proud to celebrate Kyle Barker at the MAMA Awards for his lifetime of musical achievement.

Original songwriting.....the first love of Modesto Unplugged. We’re one of the few presenters in the area who value and emphasize original music, and our ‘Friday Night Folk Flight’ program is strong this month, welcoming artful and accom plished songwriters from Connecticut, California and Colorado. We begin on October 7 with a new voice debuting at my series: CT troubadour Anna May. Anna’s music is about memory and meditation, honoring a hope to enhance connection, humility, and joy among more people. Her style is streaked with tones of jazz, fresh interpretations of classic folk music, and alternative tragic Americana. October 14, we feature NorCal minstrel Liz Ryder, one of my favorite folk song writers based in CA. Liz is a British native with a style rooted in traditional English folk and a passion for rendering the old with a mind for the new. Accompany ing herself with fingerstyle guitar, Celtic bouzouki, banjo, and sometimes folk harp, she plays both traditional and self-penned music of a dynamic and honest nature. Payton Mahoney of local youth-rock ensemble Portrait Of Elysia will warm up the evening with a few tunes. October 28, it’s the return of a voice not heard in Modesto in far too long - one of the most powerful and distinctive voices in the MU-Verse. Xanthe Alexis has devoted her life to healing others, whether by guiding patients to recovery as a trauma therapist or transporting audiences to transcendence through soaring melodies and lush, hyp notic soundscapes. Xanthe’s songwriting grapples with anxiety and strength, worry and comfort, heartbreak and hope; and her sound hints at everything from Angel Ol sen and Sharon Van Etten to Julien Baker and Feist. All showcases run 7:30-9:00 pm at The Dragonfly Art For Life, 1210 J St., $10 at the door. For an extra charge, you

can also paint along to the music; there are frequent sip-and-paint sessions running concurrently with concerts, and more than one of my featured performers has walked away with a portrait created by a patron.  The full-band Americana show to catch this month is the record release party for Tiffany Rose & The Outlaw Hearts, sup ported by Chris Doud & The Salvage Co. Chris is the finest lyricist in all of Stanislaus County by my reckoning, and this is an eve ning I wouldn’t consider missing. Saturday 10/1 starting at 7:30, $10 at the door. Look for several more appearances by fantastic original songwriters before the year is out, and we hope to see you out supporting live music in Modesto.

FOOD VIEW

Raise your hand if you remember or have been to Mallards.   Back in the 70’s & 80’s, Mallards was a game changer.  At the corner of McHenry and Briggsmore, this upscale restaurant created by Dan Costa ushered a new level of culinary experience.  Throughout the years, many food service workers learned how to do this and build businesses of their own.  Many people ask me, what happened to Mallards and friends, I can tell you, that the closest thing we have is Burley’s on Carpenter Road.    Owned and operated by Kim Gaynor, daughter Daffani  and Chef Mike Ortiz, this place is a find, and once you go, you will be a regular.   You need to look for this as it set back from the street near Woodland and Carpenter.  Once inside, you know you have found the right places.    Kim and Mike both worked at Mallards. Kim on the food service and catering side, regularly ca tering places like the SOS Club, PSC, Gallo and many events and fundraisers.   Follow ing the closing of Mallards, Kim continued to cater events, but eventually needed a new kitchen.  Mike Ortiz had been operating Toscana in Turlock and they both decided to build a place that could be both a cater ing kitchen and a full service restaurant and they literally built the place with their hands.  They worked hard during Covid to get Burley’s ready, and the day that the purple rating was issued, allowing dining, they opened. They took the time during the pandemic to get things right.  Kim knew that she wanted to build this place on the West Side of Modesto where she was from.  It was important to her that the west side have premium dining and more importantly, be a place where people feel comfortable.   Mike knew exactly what he wanted to do and between them, and their Mallards experience, new what the menu should be.

To those that remember Mallards, you will be elated to see some of the favorites on the menu, like the Chicken (or Shrimp) Cavatappi ala Vodka with and the deli cious Filet Mignon with the garlic whipped potatoes. One of the highlight dishes is the Whiskey Peppercorn sirloin with whipped potatoes with a whiskey cream sauce. These are just amazing staples you just can’t beat.

For those that are not familiar with the legendary dishes, they make an amaz ing Poki Bowl, and get this, the Almond Crusted Chicken Salad, with ricotta/ honey champagne vinaigrette.  One of our favorites is a Thai Steak and Noodle Salad, with mangos, sliced avocados, noodles and peanut dressing.  Wow.

Chef Mike and Kim and Daffani are very focused on being true farm to fork.  They literally have most of the area farmers delivering to them, whether it is Pluots & white nectarines from Zaigers, Almonds from Fisher Nut, or specialty cheese from Fiscalini.  What’s more, you will regularly

find these farmers eating at Burley’s.

Chef Mike explains, “one of the unique ele ments is that our sauces change as the fresh fruit seasons change”.   They are just coming out of the apricot and nectarine season and the sauces now move toward apple and fall flavors.  October and November feature so many amazing flavors in our area.

The new generation at Burley’s is lead by Kim’s daughter Daffani Ryan.  She basically grew up in restaurants, and often wondered why so many of her friends were bartend ers.  The restaurant business is in her blood and she is sheparding in a new generation of first class food fans.  She laughs that when some of the regulars come in, it takes about 20 minutes for them to make their way from the front door to the bar, where Kayla Rude will have a Martini ready. Daf fani explains that the favorites from the Mallards days are still the favorites of today, and appetizers like the Calamari are the top sellers.

These are just a few of the tastes that you

amazing Butternut squash soup that we featured last year in the view.  The bar list is amazing, Louis Martini is “on tap” and the Martini menu is flavorful and there is truly something for everyone in your group.  Holiday reservations are being taken now and they have a 24 seat banquet room available for special occasions. I really hope to see you there and it will be worth your time and you will become a regular.

INTERVIEW

Brad Hawn

Brad Hawn, mild mannered engineer and architect by day, community organizer by night.  Brad is a truly multi-faceted individual.  Over the last few decades, he has been a Modesto City Council member, artist, gallery co-owner, property manager, active leader in his church, candidate for Modesto Mayor, advocate for homeless so lutions, past President of Modesto Rotary Club, creator of the Modesto Art & Wine festival in the 2000s and maybe the most important, a leader in helping create the Modesto Neighborhoods Incorporated, a non-profit that is linking together the people in our various neighborhoods to work toward at better Modesto, giving a direct voice to the citizen in each region.   Brad and his wife Nancy are truly making a positive mark in our community, truly living the life of community service and making things better all of our families. Brad is a lifelong Modestan, I have worked with Brad on many of these projects and know how committed he is to making a difference and currently he is helping us build the Graffiti USA Museum. During the pandemic, Brad has personally built some of the parklets along J Street.  Let’s meet Brad Hawn.

ModestoView:   What inspires you to make Modesto a better place?

Brad Hawn:  I guess as I got involved in city business on the Redevelopment Commission and later the city council.  I caught the bug of being part of the change to make Modesto a better place to live, a city that my kids and grandkids would want to stay and thrive in.

MV:  What was your first job out of col lege?

BH:  I worked for Bob Jacobsen.  It was a tough time as interest rates were at 15-20% and construction was very slow.  A tough few years to be an engineer.

MV:   How did you meet Nancy?  BH: I was at a Boy Scout Camp, she was with her family at Modesto Reservoir

and she was riding a Honda 90 but didn’t know how to shift.  So I got a chair and set up on the pathway she was riding on and tried to help her.  After a canoe ride and 7 years later we were married.  Here we are 45 years of marriage later and still madly in love.

MV:  It seems like there are so many issues that need our attention in town, how do we prioritize ?

BH:  Jobs, Housing, helping our homeless neighbors and getting the neighborhoods involved so that each neighborhood knows each other and do several street parties a year.

MV:  In my experience, things happen when our citizen are engaged, how did this inspire the creation of the MNI?

BH:  MNI is a group of larger neighbor hoods alliances gathering together to encourage each other and to inspire us to make our neighborhood better.  It is a great conduit for working with the city police, parks, trees, traffic, etc.

MV:   How many neighborhood orga nizations are currently operating in Modesto?

BH: There are currently 10, but we are working a plan to expand this number.

MV:    What are some of the needs that you see consistently across Modesto neighborhoods?

BH:  Safety, Homeless (mostly close to downtown and McHenry), and living wage jobs

MV:   What do you think is the best way to get our citizens involved ?

BH:  It all starts when a block of houses begins to become a neighborhood, Na tional Night Out, 4th of July or any block party that gets us communicating with our neighbors. This makes the neighborhood safer and helps with isolated neighbors, gives us the ability to dream about how we can make the neighborhood better, etc. RELATIONSHIPS are the top reason people feel safe and connected!

MV:   You are involved in so many things, what do you think is the most important issue that we can solve?

BH:  Connectedness of our neighbors and city where we can have places to serve our city to make it a better place to live.

MV:  Vibrancy is a mythical word, how do we design and engineer a city for vibrancy? Get everyone involved from the simple task of becoming a good neighbor who cares for an reaches out to the people

on their block to becoming a community volunteer to take on tough issues (that’s how I got involved in the neighborhood and then homelessness)

MV:   How do we bring back festivals in downtown, like Art & Wine or X-fest?

BH: I think some serious study of the citizens to see what they would like to see and support.  There are lots of ideas that other cities have capitalized on, but we need what’s uniquely Modesto

MV:  How do you balance the needs to manage your own business with the demands of being civically involved?

BH:  Most the time I’m balanced but those closest to me think I’m unbalanced.  Truthfully I limit my work schedule to free the time to do community work.  I do this because I love trying to move the needle, but it isn’t for the faint of heart. It takes years to see change in many cases due to the complexity of the issue, perse verance is a great quality in this work.

MV:   Describe your ideal Modesto day.

BH:  I have coffee early get to work and start the day juggling my job and com munity work.  The real benefit is the relationships that you can develop as you serve the community.

MV: Beatles or Stones?

BH:  Bad question…should be best movie…. Princes Bride, Sandlot or Green Card favorite movies and oh yes don’t forget Hunt for Red October.

CM:  Well, I put this down in the Beatles column based on the hints given in the movie selections.

Modesto Neighborhoods Incorporated is a very important part of our commu nity. It began as a LaLoma Neighborhood group started by Mike Moradian to give neighborhoods a voice and a mechanism to get things done. Best of all, you can be a part of it and represent your neighbor hood.  Check out the neighborhoods that have organized groups and get involved.  If your neighborhood doesn’t have a group, connect with MNI and learn how to get it started.  Modesto’s future is in your hands.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a great time to spread awareness about the importance of breast health. Early de tection is key - be your best advocate in preven tion of this disease, which means getting yearly mammograms, performing monthly self-exams, and mark your calendar on the first of the month to remember your exams. As we are coming out of a pandemic, many people have missed annual screening and mammograms, so I encourage you now if you are due for a screening to schedule one promptly. My passion and drive to make a difference educating and advocating for women began for me at the young age of 25, as I lost my mom to this brutal aggressive disease when she was only 48 years old. From that day on, I was always proactive in getting exams and screenings. After having a normal mammogram in 2012, I was diagnosed just a few months later with breast cancer...the words I never wanted to hear in my life. I was blessed to have a very proactive health care team here in Modesto. I underwent a double mastectomy and four rounds of chemotherapy. I am here today ten years as a survivor on a mission to be a big voice here in my community, orchestrating care for women and advocating for the very best treatment plans, encourag ing them to be ready.

Breast Cancer Quick Facts:

Did you know? Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States, except skin cancer. It is about 30% (or 1 in 3) of all new female cancers each year.

The American Cancer Society’s estimates for breast cancer in the United States for 2022 are:

- About 287,850 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women

- About 51,400 new cases of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) will be diagnosed.

- About 43, 250 women will die from breast cancer.

- Nine percent of new breast cancer diagnosis in the US are found in women under 45.

- Breast cancer mainly occurs in middle-aged and older women. The median age at the time of breast cancer diagnosis is 62. This means half of the women who developed breast cancer are 62 years of age or younger when they are diagnosed.

October holds the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Cancer (MSABC) campaign which started in 1993 with the goal of uniting communi ties, companies, and individuals with the collective goal to end breast cancer as we know it. Over the past two decades, the 3 to 5 mile non-competitive walks have collectively grown in to the nation’s largest and most impactful breast can cer movement providing a supportive community for courageous survivors and metastatic breast cancer thriver’s, including caregivers, and families alike. This year, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer celebrates its 30th anniversary and will take place in more than 150 communities nationwide.

Last month I was fortunate enough to attend two 50th Birthday celebrations back to back in one weekend. Both were filled with music and fellowship. It was frenetic, exciting, nostalgic and brought to mind how much we have all been through and how much we rely on one another to live. To really live. I know that I am very fortunate to be able to serve others in my work and in my play.

If you are looking to participate in your life in ways that feed your spirit, try infusing your consciousness with music. You will find several opportunities in this month’s issue to choose from. When you go to venues and events where live music is performed, you are supporting the musicians and feeding your own soul. Win-win.

October is National Arts and Humanities Month. Begin a lifelong habit of participation, explore new facets of the arts, and invest in the arts. Our community is full of theatres, galleries and creative spaces. Where will you start?

On Thursday, October 6, the annual SHARE the WARMTH Concert and Coat Drive benefitting The Food Initiative of Greater Stanislaus formerly known as Inter-Faith Ministries, the Salvation Army Barbarian Shelter and the Modesto Gospel Mission will once again be the hot ticket. This familyfriendly show features MAMA nominated Blue Collar band- A Gathering of the VIBES. Many special guests will appear throughout the night and the no-contact outerwear dona tion bins, designed by local artist, Claudia Bellani will collect your generous donations to help our needy neighbors. Downbeat is at 5:30 pm, 3318 Wycliffe Drive, Modesto. Bring your family and friends, your chair and tailgate gear and your giant heart-tip jar do nations will help purchase socks and gloves. October is LGBTQ+ History Month. This month-long observance will be highlighted in our community with a great family eventMoPride sponsored “Pride in the Park” on Saturday, October 1 and the anniversary and grand reopening of the Central California LGBTQ+ Collaborative and Resource Center on Tuesday, October 11 which is National Coming Out Day. These two steward-driven events will feature live performances and DJ music, food and swag. Let’s Celebrate! This is the last time that I will mention the Modesto Area Mama Awards (MAMAs). The end of the vote is on October 16 at 11:59 pm. Your voice is your choice. This is ours. This homage to music is the only time when we can cast a vote for our favorites, appreciate great art, campaign and sway the vote, gather

all the unique genres under one roof and celebrate each other’s craft. You can be sure that Kanye won’t be out there to disapprove and there will be enough cocktails to soothe an injured ego and toast a just accolade. The cool thing is that you re forever known as a MAMA nominee or winner after the award season. I am not here to campaign for myself or tout my illustrious career ( LOL) but I will say that all the other artists in my Singer/ Songwriter & Acoustic category are great in their own right and I wish them and all the other nominees the best and cannot wait to see you all on awards night.

Just a reminder that this is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast Cancer early detection and diagnosis can save a life. Please get regular screenings and listen to your body.

Let’s enjoy the cooler weather, the leaves changing color and take care of each other as we enter the virus season. Be mindful of your needy neighbors. Support local businesses. Tip the musicians. Put your ego aside for the good of the community. Ad mire a painting. Walk a mile in her shoes. Listen to some poetry. Tear down walls. Praise a kid. Thank a teacher. For the sake of art and humanity.

On September 30, 2022, through October 8, 2022, The Gallo Center for the Arts will be presenting one of the greatest plays ever adapted from the pages of a book. To Kill a Mockingbird, published in July of 1960, and written by Harper Lee, shook up the world upon its release. At the time, Jim Crow segregation laws were in full effect. Dr. Martin Luther King was opening the eyes of the nation, with news channels broadcast ing the non-violent “sit-in” events he would hold at restaurant counters that denied black patrons from eating their meals at the tables inside. Instead, they were only permitted to get their food in a to-go bag and eat outside, (in the back of the estab lishments). Even bathrooms and drinking fountains were separate and clearly labeled as either “Whites Only” or “Colored.” This was the Civil Rights Era and the tension, (when it came to race relations in 1960), was extremely volatile. One month after the book was released, Dr. King gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, and it was perfect timing.

Though Harper Lee’s book was written about a fictional town called Maycomb, Alabama, both the book and Dr. King’s

For Jim Johnson, Ph.D., this year’s produc tion of To Kill a Mockingbird is extremely special and dear to his heart. Ryan Foy, Director of Produced Theatre & Special Programming, put it best, when he stated, “Specifically, it is the 10th anniversary of the coproduction between the Gallo Center and Prospect Theatre Project that also acted as the impetus to create the Gallo Center Repertory Company and Sankofa Theatre Company. It is also Jim Johnson’s final show that he is directing as Artistic Director of GCRC.”

The cast is impeccable with actors David Hambley in the role of Atticus Finch, Cam den Van Lewen, will play, Jem Finch, Daisy Braley, will play, Scout Finch, and John Ervin III, will be playing the role of Tom Robinson. Mr. Ervin is the Executive Direc tor/Artistic Director, and one of the four co-founders, of the first African American Theatre Company, founded in Modesto, California, Sankofa Theatre Company.

Dr. Johnson did not take his responsibility as director for this production lightly either. He made sure the Gallo Center connected with Modesto’s local NAACP President, Wendy Byrd, to seek advice on how best to promote the story within our commu nity. You do not want to miss this incred ible event! All the details can be found here: https://tickets.galloarts.org/8765

Autumn Blues and Jazzy Nights

Ah, fall is upon us us and sweet September song has rung in a cooler season. I am no longer sweating in places I didn’t know I had places! The summer garden winding down and rust settling in on the vines but now is the time to plant fall crops and get ready for spring. Plenty to do with music and the arts in downtown.

Blue Monday continues to twice a month on the second and fourth Mondays and I hope to do more in the near future. The House Band featuring Andrew Rosenblum guitar, sax, John Burt sax, John Ady and Conrad Johnson Bass, and Dave Hawkes and Cortez Flores on Drums continue to amaze me and make it happen.  Café Urbano has a full bar and food available in a nice club environment from 7 to 10 PM. Urbano also has DJ dancing Tuesday through Sunday featuring Latin Based music.

A new note-worthy venue in Merced is Vinhos Wine and Tapas bar, with food, an expansive wine list with live music on the weekends. The music is Jazz, Blues and popular music.

Some great shows at Gallo Center but also check out some great venues out of

town:  Yoshi’s Oakland’s best jazz shows, Kuumbwa Music Center Santa Cruz and Piedmont Piano company and the Sound Room located in Oakland.

We are on the rebound from the global pandemic post-apocalyptic party so be a good human and get your soul vaccination at the vaccination station and stay boosted. Until our paths cross again peace out! And remember as Herb Caen said if you don’t like the news go out and make some of your own!

FUNERAL HOME’S ORIGINS – PERLEY HOUSE

McHenry Village

of excellence since

To some the idea of a funeral home, espe cially around Halloween, may give them the heebie-jeebies. But upon a deeper look into the origins of a well-known Modesto building, a much less spooky story was uncovered. For nearly 75 years, the white colonial in downtown at the corner of 12th and G Streets was the Franklin and Downs Funeral Home. To many in the area, it has always and only functioned as such. How ever, the house located at 704 12th Street actually has ties back to an early Modesto leader involved in the creation of our 1910 City Charter. Although the house itself has been extensively remodeled inside and out since it was originally built, it continues to remain a vestige of the era when large stately homes were still commonplace in downtown.

Completed between 1872 and 1887, the house was built for George Perley and his family. The Perley House was a grand three-story home, which featured a rather distinct turret along with ornate decorative trim throughout its roofline and porches. Perley was a prominent businessman in Modesto, being involved in real estate and run ning the first abstracts and title office in Stanislaus County.

When concerned Modestans at the start of the 20th Century determined a new government was needed to address rampant debauchery in the seemingly law less town, a group of 15 promi nent business and community leaders were selected to serve as freeholders tasked with creating a city charter to establish a more

effective local government and to provide structure and order to the town. George Perley was among the 15 freeholders with this hon orable duty. Once the new City Charter was adopted by voters on September 11, 1910, elections of the mayor and four city council men took place the following year in 1911. Perley was elected to serve as one of Modesto’s first councilmen, and in that capacity held the position of commis sioner of public works. He was a supporter of “progressive” civic reforms to improve and clean up the town, and even was the master of ceremonies for the christening celebration for the Modesto Arch in 1912. After committing half a century to business and the success of the City of Modesto, George Perley passed away in 1923. The home George Perley built was sold to George Sovern in 1921, who established the Welch and Sovern Funeral Home –which made it one of the first mortuaries in Modesto. After 25 years in operation, Sovern sold his business to Lewis Franklin and Saxon Downs in 1946, which then went on to do business in the same location until just a couple years ago. Though the home at 704 12th Street has changed consider ably in appearance from the time it was built for George Perley to the present day, it continues to serve as a reminder of the earlier generations in Modesto that sought to contribute to the community and make it a better place to live.

In October we get to enjoy some of the best weather all year long. For those who train all year outside, it’s a much wel comed sight. October is close to April’s weather when it comes to how pleasant the temperatures can be. I’d invite you to keep this in mind and think about doubling up on your fitness challenges. Now is a great opportunity to go that extra mile to help you achieve your goals.  They may be improving your overall health,  trying to lose weight, winning a race or just trying to improve your speed.

For many Tri-Athletes, double or even tri ple fitness days are the norm. We generally start out with an 8-13 mile run, followed by a 30 mile bike ride and top it off with a mile swim in the pool. During the sum mertime, this can only be done at the crack of dawn to avoid much of the heat that comes on so strong in the afternoon. This is why October’s weather is so pleasant. You can actually sleep in a little longer and still get your double or triple play fitness on in one day. It’s really the best time for me and many like me who enjoy being outside

in all aspects of our life.

Friends this October try and take advan tage of the cooler weather and double up.  Maybe play a game of tennis or pickleball in the morning, go for a run or walk soon after. Your mind, body and persona will love it. One more keynote! Please always be mindful of your surroundings. It’s best to remember that to stay safe out there we must stay clear of cars. In my mind, I always assume that every car out there can not see me so I make it a point to be seen. Cheers to your health!

Fall is here! Soon we will see the colors of the orchards turn yellow and red again. Definitely a pretty sight from a bird’s perspective. Ok everybody I will admit: Life is just going a bit fast for me at the moment, the weeks  zoom by and I try to get all the stuff done  on my to-do-list  in what seems shrinking time. Luckily I discovered a  beau tiful new form of relaxation and comfort on the Disney Channel and I love it!  Last night I watched “India from Above”. It was wonderful! I could swear even my cat was mesmerized. It is so important to remember how different and magical the world looks somewhere else ! It feels very refreshing and uplifting to see people approach life’s chal lenges differently.  How fun to learn about different customs to celebrate the mag nificence of creation. Great to see that even today people use the knowledge of their ancestors who found very smart ways to cooperate with nature and live in harmony with the elements.  So good that we have

different cultures to be inspired by.  I be lieve  we can learn a lot from other peoples’ know how, creative ideas and inventiveness. And they can learn from us.

What does our own world look like from above?  When I close my eyes I can see the wealth and abundance of fruits and nuts in our valley.  In the month of October we see people in Halloween costumes  and they put a smile on our faces. I think it helps to take a step back to see above and beyond what we usually perceive to get the bigger picture. Maybe there’s a lot more to be thankful for than we think.
