EDITOR’S Greetings October in Modesto is an amazing month. First, the beauty of the transition from summer to fall is nothing short of stellar. The leaves from our tree turn a brilliant orange and one of our favorite holidays, Halloween receives the most beautiful warm up act. There is a change in the air, a new feeling as the breezes get cooler, the fall harvest tastes, the butternut squash soups, the fall air punctuated by the occasional thunderstorm rocking the atmosphere and the sounds of music swirl around the Modesto area. Yes this it is a beautiful time of year. There is an amazing sense of community as we rally around our high school football, cross country and waterpolo games, we cheer our teams and root for our college and NFL football teams. ( Go Bears! ) The fall fundraisers are starting to join our community together for greater good and the evening start to become haunted and spooky as the we count down the days until we trick or treat our friends and neighbors. Fall as such a natural spookiness already with the blowing leaves the darker nights where friends enjoy evenings on patios around town enjoying our amazing wine and cuisine. This is a great season in Modesto. October in Modesto is also Rocktober! The 14th Annual MAMA Awards lights up the fabulous historic State Theatre on Rocktober 23. This is a very special event this year. In addition to feeding the world, being home to people like George Lucas and American Graffiti, we are also stepping up to take our place as one of the birthplaces of Rock and Roll and the home of Rokabillly, our own special sound. Besides recognizing over 200 nominees for best musician, band, venue or event, we are celebrating the legendary achievement of K.C. “Don Juan” Maddox of the Maddox Brothers and Rose. The 90 year old Don will be here to receive his award in a triumphant return to Modesto, where they became famous over KTRB radio in the 1930s and 1940s, paving the way for future rock greats. This month, we visited with the amazing Michael Allsup and he shares his rock and roll stardom story and why Modesto is still a special place. This all comes together as we reflect on all of the good things that Modesto has going for it. You don’t have to look that hard, but you do need to pay more attention to the good things than the bad things in our society. We face the same obstacles that other cities do, but it is how we celebrate the good that makes us different. We can overcome our challenges with civic pride. We can tackle tough issues if we are bound together by seeing all of the good. That is why ModestoView is here. We are unlike anything else in Stanislaus County. We constantly look for the good things, the great stories, our wonderful history and we connect it all with ModestoView Magazine, ModestoView.com and our amazing Facebook, Twitter and Instagram efforts. Just one look at ModestoView, it will change the way you look at Modesto. We will continue doing what we have been doing since 1997, Serving Civic Pride Daily. Thanks to all of you that read ModestoView and make it part of your life. Thanks to the outstanding local businesses that advertise in ModestoView that help us grow and want to reach the positive customers. Thanks to every one of you that spreads the good word about Modesto. Our friends are the people that will change Modesto for the better in the future. Glad you are here. Tell us what you want to see more of in ModestoView. FAMOUS Bright Red Animals and Mexican Adventures My girlfriend just looked out the window and said, “There is a cute family across the street in the park playing with a dog in a bright red sweater!” That is the kind of thing that I like to hear this time of year. The weather is perfect for family adventures and local road trips and those are my favorite things to do. Put ten bucks in the old mini van or Brady Bunchstyle wood paneled Oldsmobile soon and check out the cool towns and neighborhoods around us. Seriously, Crows Landing Road is an authentic reproduction of Mexico and places like Escalon and Oakdale will zap you back into time without you needing a crazy scientist sidekick or an expensive stainless steel car. Let’s talk about Crow’s Landing Road for a minuteWe took a quick family trip there last week and we came home with fresh meat that I had trouble ordering because I really need to embrace my heritage and learn how to speak Spanish, a bag full of pastries that tasted like Jesus himself was throwing food from the heavens and some really tasty fresh produce. Sure, you might be intimidated by all the motion, color and loud craziness there but that is the point. We all need a little sensory overload once in a while. It’s good for the soul. About Escalon and Oakdale — Farmland is always beautiful to visit and it is cool to see it knowing that it built everything around it. Walk down streets lined with shops that are still called mercantiles, meet a few people that you won’t likely forget anytime soon, ask questions and learn as much as you can. Keep an open mind and a have a playful heart. That will make every little trip much more fun and exciting. Let’s end this one here. Put down the paper, grab a camera and cruise over to the gas station. You have some exploring to do. You need tacos from a truck and fields of corn and old railroad tracks. We all do. I’m about to go stick a $400 GoPro camera in the river to try to film fish. Maybe I have lost it but that is how we get the shots that interest readers the most. That is how we

get as close to the action as possible without getting in the way. That is how we get just the right “ModestoView.” Be happy this month. Follow me on twitter if you have a chance. My handle there is RubenWriter. I am also on Instagram as

RubenWriter. That has been my favorite social media outlet lately. Sharing my art and having people really enjoy it is very rewarding. Photos this month taken in and around Escalon. What a cool place to visit.

ART October Art Walk October’s

Downtown Modesto Third Thursday Art Walk falls on my birthday, October 17. I am celebrating by getting a new map, and seeing what’s new. Find the new map at www.modestoartwalk.com or stop in at Crow Trading where some of my art on sale. Artists interested in showing their work during Art Walk should get a map and check with the individual venues to see if an opportunity to show available. Downtown also offers other art spots like Picasso’s, Café DEVA, Concetta and Tokyo Express. I try to keep readers updated on Art events in our area, but we don’t always get information by deadline. Best show I got to see, but failed to get in column last month, the Faculty Reunited display, that just finished at the Modesto Junior College East Campus Art Gallery. This is the kind of show I like to see in our area. Kudos to MJC Visual Arts Club and Dr. Richard Serros for putting this exhibit together. I got to talk to Dr. Serros about the recently installed

by Jim Christiansen project of Constellation mural panels at the new MJC Planetarium on the West Campus, represented by two quarter sized samplings in the gallery show. Caused me to take a trip to see the full sized versions. In North Modesto, the Uno Sergento Gallery opens its second show with featured artist Corey West. It is located at 5054 Pentecost, off Kiernan, in the One Stop Design Center. Trewin Framery is just a block away. Central California Art Association/Mistlin Gallery features Virginia White: “She’s Painting the Town” a retrospective 40 years of Virginia’s watercolors 1973 to 2013, with artist reception during Art Walk. Virginia is known for watercolors of architectural landmarks, such as Gallo Center, McHenry Mansion. New works in the show will include A & W Root Beer, The Flower Clock, The Modesto Arch at Sunset, and Tenth Street Place. Virginia has studied with some renowned watercolor instructors, George Post, Robert E Wood, Pop artist, Mel Ra-

mos, and locally, Dan Peterson. Virginia lives in Modesto and is a retired art teacher from the Oakdale public schools. Show runs October 8 to November 8. Also showing is Rebecca Harvey who traveled to Africa, Europe, Canada and Alaska with her camera. She started 30 years ago in the dark room with black and white film and now works with digital images. She lives in Coulterville and won awards in San Francisco Bay area, Sonora, and Manteca. Photos in the Mistlin Gallery include action shots of wildlife and color landscapes. Her philosophy is “A photo opportunity will last for only a few seconds but an image that captures your heart will last forever.” Her website is www.1photo-op.com Artist reception will be during Art Walk. The Chartreuse Muse, Mistlin Gallery and Carnegie Arts Center have children and Adult Art Classes fall sessions open. The Muse has a new fall show featuring Picasso’s owner artist Jordi Camps in September. The Chartreuse Muse life drawing group every other Saturday in the upstairs studio, 10 am to 1 pm at $10. lecture series. Focus On will feature another concert at Mistlin Gallery featuring Golden Bough and Tempest at the end of the month. See http://focus-on.org for details. George Cole will be featured in the third in series of concerts at Mistlin Gallery in November. Merced Art Hop will be October, as is the All Hallows Fantasy Faire in Sonora. Riverbank will have the Wine and Cheese Festival. Sonora features Second Saturday Art Night. Livermore Art Walk, Saturday October 12, 11 am to 5 pm - 150 Artists, Art Demos, acoustic music, wine bar on the plaza, art banner auction, free admission. www.Artwalklivermore.org 925-447 ARTS. BAR HOPpy Times at Dust Bowl Brewing Co. By Kate Serpa

You know what’s fun?

Beer. You know what’s not fun? Whiskey-fueled karaoke incidents involving assault (weapon of choice: tambourine) -- hence my absence last month. I wish I was lying. October is the month of love --and the month of beer. Actually the two are probably synonymous with one another now that I think about it. Dust Bowl Brewing Co. was entirely Phil’s idea, which is strange considering how much I love Dust Bowl’s fantastic, amazing, perfect beer. It’s my go-to after work libation. Somehow, this girl was lucky enough to meet with Dust Bowl founder and owner, Brett Tate, to talk about my favorite beer. And I’ll tell you honestly, reader, it was truly the first time I’ve ever been nervous going into an interview. Dust Bowl is something I have been in love with since I was first introduced. Meeting Tate was meeting my beer hero. I’ve realized many people in Modesto don’t realize that 1) Dust Bowl is locally owned and operated (Turlock), 2) there’s a tap room where you can go and eat delicious foods, drink delicious drinks, and not smack people in the face with your tambourine because the song they’re singing makes you sad inside. My name is Kate, and I’m here today to spread Dust Bowl awareness. Please take a pamphlet. The fact that Dust Bowl’s premium, awardwinning Hops of Wrath, is amazingly delicious is no surprise. Dust Bowl’s tenbarrel, state of the art brewery is less than a mile away from the tap room, ensuring a fresh pour -- and at 300 gallons per beer batch -- a whole lot of it. That’s a challenge if I’ve ever heard one So come with me, lovely reader, into the beautiful, immaculately outfitted Dust Bowl tap room for a frothy-fun time with Tate, Michelle Peterson (PR), Phil, and assault-committing me. There are fourteen rotating taps of the sweet stuff, with the occasional featured guest tap. Indecisive? I fully recommend getting a sample paddle so you can experience and savor five options at a time. Refer-

ence the massive chalkboard over the taps to see what growler bottles (that’s a solid half gallon for you, baby) are also available to fill with your favorite. Dust Bowl is kind enough to also feature $2-off growler fills on Wednesday. Wednesday is my new favorite day. And now, boys and girls, gather around for a bit of drunk history (crowd cue: cheers and applause). Dust Bowl is not some random name Tate came up with for his company; it has deep historical roots surrounding his family. During the actual Dust Bowl, Tate’s family moved from OK to CA to jumpstart a new life for themselves. Tate’s family history is comparable to his own

move from high school sports coach to recognized beer entrepreneur. Nearly every detail fuses his history with a modern twist -- from the water mason jars, to the barbed wire, the hobo signs scattered on the walls, to the 1928 original mercantile building to where it is all housed. Tate believes in the story of his family history and fervently represents it in everything he produces. So are we all on the same page about Dust Bowl beer here? I mean, we should be, right? This article has everything! Beer, heroes, historical events, chalkboards, incriminating stories about myself, $2-off growler Wednesdays….. I think we’ve got it all covered. This article really could have

just been two words: IT’S AMAZING. Honestly, reader, do yourself a favor and see if Hops of Wrath is featured on tap at your home bar. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Oh, and if anyone asks, we were hanging out on the evening of Sept. 16th. We were not drinking, not doing karaoke, and I did not have a tambourine. I’ll buy you a pint if you do me the favor. HOPpy Hour: Tuesday - Thursday: 2-5, all day Sunday DB Tap Room: 200 West Main, Turlock, CA - 209.250.2042 www.dustbowlbrewing.com www.facebook.com/dustbowlbrewing

A Time to Perform in October

Eleanor Roosevelt: My Story Thurs., Oct. 10 7:30 PM

by Kaye Osborn

Going to the theater to see a live performance is one of my favorite activities. My husband and I support local productions as well as out-of-town. We attend musicals, vocal and instrumental concerts, comedy shows, poetry readings, and dramatic presentations. The audience provides energy for the performers. Audience members should be quiet, attentive, and responsive. Be mindful and respectful of the people around you and the stage performers. Do not text, take photos only when given permission, spill over the armrest, or chat with your neighbor! And if anyone asks you to please be quiet, do not take it personally! I imagine comedians tolerate hecklers and learn how to deal with their outbursts. Do some research about the show you will see, especially comedians to make sure you will find them entertaining. Some comedians are G rated while others are R rated. Now, let’s get on to what will be showing in October.

CHEF Oakdale Cheese Factory & Specialties ...Smile and Say Cheese!

by Dana Johnson FB: Dana’s Family Kitchen FOX40: See Chef Dana every 1st Friday of the month

Miss Dana~licious was eating her curds and whey, when along came a family of cheese makers, who sat down beside her… The Oakdale Cheese Factory and Specialties has many time transcending characteristics of whimsy nursery rhymes reminding me of simpler times. Oakdale Cheese is made by hand in a vat from Denmark and has 4 family generations of experience creating their distinctive cheeses. I love that this quaint, yet traditional cheese factory that still gives free tours, (see schedule @ www. Oakdalecheese.com), free cheese tasting samples, and for 25 cents you can get a handful of feed for the goats, sheep, chickens, geese, and a llama named Mocha that reside there on the 4 acre property. Guests may also want to feed the over 100 Koi fish in the pond. I found it most relaxing to gaze at the waterfall & fountain in the lush green backdrop. The grounds have 12 shady areas with tables for eating an outdoor meal away from home, what a concept, it’s called a picnic! Big congrats to Walter and Lenneke Bulk for celebrating their 30 year wedding anniversary! The Bulks have been the OC owners since 1983 where it originally opened in Escalon. In 1995 they moved their successful business to a larger facility in Oakdale. The Bulks are 1st generation American immigrants from the Netherlands. Walter and Lenneke both love to make and eat cheese. Walter loves the aged Gouda while Lenneke favors the mild Gouda for its mellow smoothness with a hearty wheat bread she bakes at home. They have 3 grown children and their son John Dirk Bulk is now the head cheese maker. He has been following in his father’s footsteps since the age of 4. John graduated from dairy science milk processing in 2005. John recently wed his bride Jessica who also works at the cheese factory. I actually spied the sweet newly-

Walter and Lenneke in the early days weds strolling and holding hands while on a break enjoying the serene grounds. Oh how so many of us love cheese! Did you know whey is the watery part of milk that separates from the curds, as in the process of making cheese? The curds can take up to a 12 hour to process. 21 seasoning salute from Trader Joe’s is used to flavor the curds. The curds also known as ‘squeaky cheese’ at OC are a favorite healthy snack especially among kids. Our own Chris Murphy is known to munch on them regularly as he buys them at the Modesto farmer’s market. OC is also well known for their10 different flavored Gouda cheeses like garlic basil, smoked, jalapeno pepper, Mediterranean, and cumin to tease you with a few. I’ve often enjoyed soft goat cheese and was eager to try hard goat cheese, loved it! Then another 1st for me ‘quark’ cheese, similar to cream cheese but more tart, kind of like a thickened yogurt, but not, a real original with only 2% fat content! Quark originated in Germany/Austria. OC sells quark by itself, while they also use it to make cheesecake sold whole or in slices. Love this versatile cheese as OC has a pesto quark and a lemon quark, too! I imagine you may still be hung up thinking about that picnic concept! OC has a wonderfully stocked specialty store that has all the makings of a tasty picnic as you can get caught up in the moment! A lil

– Michael Allsup

The Origins of Modesto’s Rock are Rockin!

by Chris Murphy

ell you might have Never Been to Spain, or written an Old Fashioned Love Song, but you sure know the music of Three Dog Night. What you may not know, is that the roots of Three Dog Night start right here in Modesto USA. Michael Allsup was the founding guitarist of Three Dog Night back in the 60s and they conquered the music world. Michael Allsup knows his history, and his chronicles of his rock and roll years are one of the best guides to learn. Michael was very instrumental in the creating of the Modesto Historic Cruise Route kiosks. Three Dog Night will be making a big return to Modesto on October 12 at the Gallo Center that will surely be a crowd pleaser, loaded with hits like Joy to the World, Black and White and one of my faves, One. Modesto truly is a big part of the history of music. We caught up with Michael Allsup to reflect on Modesto music history. ModestoView: What inspired you to become a musician? Michael Allsup: First, my LOVE of it ... would be the main thing. I had been around non-musical instrument supported music (a cappella) my entire youth while attending the Church of Christ here in Modesto. (It was located in the now empty triangle lot formed by La Loma Ave, Burney St., and Rue De Yoe I believe) I’d say my main inspirations came from aunts, uncles and cousins who played and sang. Still, there was one person in particular that put me on the path simply by his moral support and encouragement. That would be J. B. Pemberton (John), an older friend of the family. He was so supportive. Amazing what a simple “pat on the back” can do for a young insecure kid of 13 or 14. My blind guitar teacher, Ted Nelson was ALSO integral with his loving support and guidance. He gave me all I could absorb and made it fun. He seemed truly excited for me ... that I loved it so much and was picking it up fast. I should mention Hank De Coito here somehow. He’s been gone a lot of years, but HE TOO was an influence on me as I started my musical journey. I heard Hank and

Michael Allsup pauses at the Modesto Music History Kiosk on the Historic Cruise Route his band play on a few different gigs. One out at Del Rio Country club and another at the Elks Lodge on McHenry. Beautiful man and trumpet player. He owned and ran the old Modesto Music Store on 13th street before he sold it to Doug Holroyd. I used to go down there and actually “sniff ” the Gibson guitar cases. Wanted to be buried in one, dontcha know! MV: When did you realize that you could really break out and make it in the world of music? MA: I never did realize it until it happened. Yes, a lot of “no direction - just play for the fun of it” early teen years. Totally irresponsible. Of course, that was part of the equation

in my ... and a number of other successful players backgrounds. Naive? Of course, but dedicated beyond my years I suppose. Local players like Earl Knight (Kissling) certainly helped shape and inspire me. Kent Whitt and the Downbeats kind of put the dazzle of “the biz” in my mind, too. Thanks to Kent as well as both Bobs (Hedman and De Leon), Connie Hightman and Bill Gross. I should probably include Danny Toledo, too ... even though I never heard him play. MV. How did you feel when you had your first #1 hit? MA: Thrilled. I remember it well. We were in Peoria, IL. at a fair in 1969. Before we performed, I was walking around the stock-

yard area (being a rural guy from Modesto). Sitting next to a prize bull was a bale of hay with a little radio sitting on it. Coming out of it was “ONE” (is the lonliest number). I specifically remember that moment and what I thought. “MY GOD! WE’RE A HIT”. An amazing, wonderful feeling. THANKFUL would be another word for what I felt. MV: What surprised you most about making it big in music? MA: Just how much I would be tested in the studio. A totally foreign experience for me, other than a couple of sessions I did in Los Angeles. The biggest surprise in that situation was learning how to work with a producer and engineer. Doesn’t sound like much, but it was huge. To work on songs that were really not directly from my musical background. Obscure songs. Here’s a better way to say it. To play songs in different genres, and be creative in the process. THAT was the biggest surprise. It was also the biggest gift to me. What an opportunity. MV: You still live in Modesto, what is it that makes you want to continue to call Modesto home?

MA: Because it IS home. No place like home ... and all that stuff. I’ve enjoyed my travels (in my youth), but these days HOME is the best by far. And let me put a plug in for you guys right here. The Modesto View is absolutely the most wonderful thing to happen to Modesto in recent years. I’m so proud of what you all are doing. Do you know that I take it on the road with me and read it cover to cover on the plane? Si, I do. Your digging through Modesto’s musical history is just too good to be true for this old muso. Please keep up the good work. Yes, I’m also proud of my “niece-in-law” Jennifer Allsup for her work in Modesto View. MV: What advice would you give to a new musician with goals of making it? MA: That’s a tough one. Old guys love to “ramble and share self proclaimed genius” (Ha) , but I don’t think I’ll venture down that road. It’s such a crap-shoot. Always was, but even more today. I just read a quote from Jim Henson (The Muppets) where he made mention of not just studying the way others did things. Meaning: Sometimes figuring it out as you go is the only way to yield something unique. Of course there are much better ways to study the craft these days due to the internet and you tube, so you should put time in there, too ... of course. In my day it was strictly “lift the record player handle up and put it back down where you think that geetar part was” and do your best to learn it with

melodies in nature and you don’t have to be on drugs to hear them, either. It’s out there if you listen closely.

your ears. Most players of my generation worked that way. Course there are those that DO read and can practice parts that way, too. MV. What artists are you listening to now? MA: Not many, as my hearing is really bad these days. Been that way for over 12 years now. One of the saddest things in my life: Having my hearing take such a major hit. If I could hear better, I’d be spending my time listening to Johnny and Kelly here in Modesto ... like most of you do. I still appreciate good music in different genres. I miss the days when I could actually hear music (on occasion) even from the wind through the leaves of trees. Yes, there are

ARCHITECTURE Downtown and Creative Placemaking

by Bob Barzan

Something

wonderful is happening in downtown Modesto. The community is coming together to create a vibrant neighborhood. The transformation began last year with two successful demonstration

parklets at the corner of 10th and J Streets, the installation of the Modesto Historic Graffiti Cruise Route markers (http:// modestocruiseroute.com), and the opening of the Building Imagination Center. Next was the opening of 10th Street between J and K to vehicles to improve business exposure and enhance vibrancy. The street may still be closed for special events, but its reopening is part of a larger plan that includes the blocks between Modesto Centre Plaza and the future Tuolumne River Regional Park at the foot of 10th Street. Phase three will begin shortly: a remaking of the streetscape between I and J streets with shade trees, art, and beautiful gathering places. All this is part of a multi-faceted effort to revitalize the whole downtown. Soon you will notice transitions on J and other streets. Though physical changes are easiest to

see, many other important issues are being addressed: job development, improved parking for cars and bikes, security issues, cultural amenities and retail experiences to draw people into the area, housing, economic incentives, transportation, branding, building restoration, and much more. Many players are involved including the City of Modesto, the Modesto Downtown Improvement District, downtown business and property owners, Modesto Chamber of Commerce, Modesto Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, cultural organizations like the Modesto Art Museum, and citizen groups. Organizations without a vested interest in Modesto are contributing to our city’s success. Artplace America, aware of our community-wide effort in creative place-making, has committed more than $227,000 in the last 18 months for the revitalization of downtown through the arts. The new Modesto Design District is part of their effort. The Creative Work Fund of San Francisco has committed $17,000 for the production of a movie about Modesto. Other financial commitments are pending. These groups see something in our community worth supporting. What can you do? music is a Modesto music tradition since 1937 and yet there are so many people that don’t know much about it. This month, I will tell you about some of the MAMA nominees and encourage you to go out and listen to these bands, online, or live on stage at the Rockabilly shows at Hero’s Brewhouse. One of our musical legends is nominated this year. Roddy Jackson ( George Rodrick Jackson) Roddy has been playing music since he was 12 years of age in 1954. Influenced by greats, such as Little Richard. Being a multi-talented musician he formed the Blue Notes was signed to Specialty Records back in the day. He later played with Kent Whitt and the Downbeats. Living in Merced Roddy is still playing and teaching music. See what more you can find out on www.facebook.com/roddyjackson Eli Goodtime & The Oldtimers, “An old sounding Rock n Roll band playing shows we hope you enjoy” says Eli Allsup front man. BIG MAMA Awards

by Chris Murphy

VOTE FOR MAMA!

Music talent is everywhere!

It is amazing to me the people that meet that have not been out to see a local band. Truly amazing. We have a musical history that is unique in the USA and is part of the evolution of Rock and Roll. We have local musicians that grew up playing in local clubs, skate rinks, restaurants, dance halls that have made it big around the world It all starts here at home. They may end up on Glee, selling out the Fillmore, racking up #1 hits around the world or they may be on the verge of breaking through and signing their first record deal. But they all start by working hard here in the Modesto area to show you what they have, and hope you will buy their music and come see their shows. That is what the Modesto Area Music Awards are all about. Maybe you haven’t heard of some of these musicians or been to one of the venues that showcase music, but maybe now you will. Give a listen, go see a show and help make Modesto a city that supports live music. Live music cities are different. There is more life, there is more talent and who knows, the next #1 hit may come from Modesto. In 2000, over 300 people jammed into Club Max at the Doubletree to celebrate the very first Modesto Area Music Association Awards, The MAMAs. Now 14 years later, we are ready for the 2013 MAMA Awards and now it is your turn to vote. We have Urban, Pop, Reggae, Indie, Acoustic, Metal, Punk, Cover Bands (Blue Collar), Jazz, Blues, Rockabilly, American and so much more. Modesto has events both large and small and a great network of promoters, restaurants and cafes that host music and what would a music scene be without comedians. On October 23, live from the fabulous historic State Theatre, the results of the MAMA Awards will be announced and broadcast live on ModestoView. There will be 9 amazing live performances, music videos and special presentations.

The 2013 MAMAs will be MC’d by the talented Alan Sanchez of Good Day Sacramento. Alan always shows the best side of Modesto in his reporting. That is what we look for in a host, a dedication to showing good side of Modesto and the MAMAs is a great way to do this. Watch this month as Alan discovers his inner Rockabilly star.

This year, we honor the roots of Rock and Roll and celebrate a living Modesto legend who along with his family, the Maddox Brothers and Rose, changed music forever. In 2013, we will be honoring the legendary KC “Don Juan” Maddox. Don is 90 years on and is set to take his place in Rock and Roll, Country and Rockabilly music history. In 1937, the first sounds of Rock and Roll were played on the Modesto airwaves of KTRB Radio by the then “Alabama Outlaws”, starring Clay and Fred Maddox with 11 year old Rose, later becoming the Maddox Brothers and Rose. After World War 2, the entire Maddox family changed

music forever with their “hillbilly boogie” music. Their music and the “slappin’” bass style of Fred Maddox, inspired the first generation of Rock and Roll, including Elvis Presley’s band in 1954. You will be amazed and so proud that our music, yes this Rockabilly music, is that root that put the Rock in Rock and Roll. Don Maddox is still touring and performing and is a regular with Marty Stewart and performs all over the USA and recently recognized at the Grand ole Opry. There are documentary crews currently covering Don and his life story. So incredible that a person that was there when Rock was born, will be re-

turning to Modesto CA. This will truly be a special and legendary year and our local music community is so very excited and we are so very proud to host the Don Maddox homecoming. Don will be performing with an amazing Modesto Rockabilly All-star band. You will not want to miss the live broadcast. The MAMAs truly celebrate the accomplishments of our local musicians, both of legends and those still making a name for themselves. AUTHOR “Tyranny of the Downbeat” Remembrances of Things Musical It was twenty years ago today, That Sergeant Pepper taught the band to play. They been goin’ in and out of style, But they’re guaranteed to raise a smile. So let me introduce to you, The band you’ve known for all these years, – The Beatles, “Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” There’s a saying. Our mortality is measured by the celebrities we grow old with; that movies help mark out our lives. Do you remember who you were when you first saw Casablanca, Citizen Kane, or 2001? In the Forties and Fifties, perhaps even today, that was true. But for me, it wasn’t the movies. It was the music. I remember exactly who I was and what I was doing by certain songs. And every time I hear one, I’m back to what I was then, at that moment. In the Sixties, music really did mark the time of

our lives. All the events, all the experiences, all the memories from that time are linked forever to a mesmerizing melody or smashing power chord, a mobilizing lyric or communal chorus. There’s another saying. Everything is changeable. Only change is eternal. It is inevitable. It is persistent. As predictable as time. As tyrannical as the downbeat. The Sixties were a time for change and a time of change. And rock ‘n roll provided our anthems. Because I lived in the Central Valley, I wasn’t always a part of what was happening in San Francisco – The City. So I participated, vicariously, on my time machine – the radio. It seems we always begin and end these travels with the same band. A group that keeps that decade alive for thousands. The Grateful Dead started us down the golden road and they’re still truckin’ today.

But “The Herald” who signaled the real beginning of our trip was, appropriately enough, a music critic: Ralph J. Gleason, with a little back-up from Ben Fong-Torres and local disc jockeys. Some on AM, but most on the first underground, free-form, FM stations, like KMPX, then KSAN. It was “Big Daddy” Tom Donahue, or Creedence Clearwater Revival playing the long version of “Suzy Q” at a street dance. The official journal of the journey was not Gleason’s Chronicle, but a “rock tabloid.” A new publication that commented on the counter-culture by writing about the music it made. Rolling Stone, a rag dedicated to printing “All the News That Fits.” Why fate chose The City as the location for this flowering of music and gathering of tribes will never be known. But it did. And it gave us an incredible amount of music and musicians. The Charlatans. Moby Grape. It’s A Beautiful Day. The Beau Brummels. The Jefferson Airplane. The Steve Miller Band. Big Brother. The Youngbloods. I hear Quicksilver’s “Pride of Man” and I think of Chet Helms and “The Family Dog.” The new children will live, For the elders have died. I wave good-bye to America, And smile hello to the world. – Tim Buckley, “Hello/Good-bye” I remember the first “official” outdoor rock concert. “Magic Mountain” at Mt. Tamalpais in Marin. Tim Buckley backed by Carter C.C. Collins. I wondered if I should wear flowers in my thinning hair. “Pushin’ Too Hard.” Sky Saxon and the Seeds. “The Loner.” Neil Young’s first solo album. We were all counter-culture cowboys, denim Indians like him. Fringed, buckskinned, and alone in our melancholy.

“Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-to-Die-Rag” will always be Vietnam and a long bus ride to Fresno for my induction physical. I was terminally healthy. Then, there was a longer trip to the Oakland Draft Resistance Center, knowing that if I didn’t do something I was going to die. After all, when the numbers were called the night of the lottery, I was number twenty-four. Cannon fodder. “Light My Fire.” The flip side of the awakening. The Doors at a roller skating rink by the junior college. On the inside, Jim Morrison was smoking and sultry. On the outside, two gangs were beating the hell out of each other. The old and the new; one living, one dying, in 4/4 time. “Long Time Gone.” The Polo Grounds. The Moratorium. The first taste of revolution, of defiance, of togetherness. CS&N wearing those furry coats. I remember walking by

them and thinking how short they were. There was a point when music and movies did come together. Easy Rider broke new ground in many ways. But, I remember it especially as one of the first movies to really use rock ‘n roll to help tell the story. “Born To Be Wild,” “Ballad of Easy Rider,” and “Don’t Bogart that Joint.” Reality at twenty-four frames per second. Watching Top Gun again the other night, the latest rock ‘n roll movie, I hear Tom Cruise say his mom’s favorite song was Otis Redding’s “Dock of the Bay.” It’s a little unsettling. We are now the parents we warned ourselves about. But, it’s really no surprise. It’s predictable. Just like time. It’s persistent. Just like change. And it’s inevitable. Just like the downbeat. Lately it occurs to me, What a long, strange trip it’s been. – The Grateful Dead, “Truckin’”

I was surprised how much fun that was. And how good we sounded! Everyone seemed suddenly transformed, relaxed and in a great mood. A lot of what is troubling people nowadays is the isolation and stress brought on by technology. I think we all crave and need a deeper kind of connection. BUSINESS Let’s go for a Jaunt The

ViewCrew just had the chance to talk with Jeff Cipriano of Jaunt Adventure Gear. Cipriano and his family recently opened up shop next to Camp 4 Wine on 10th Street. Opening a niche retail store in the midst of a tough economy is not what all people might do but it is exactly what a family known for their love of adventure would do. Check out Jaunt when you have a chance. Editor’s note: Learn more about Cipriano and Jaunt at modestoview.com. We will be posting more photos and a couple of extra questions there. MV: You opened an adventure store in the midst of a shaky economy. That seems like an adventure all in itself. Is this something that you have been planning for a while? What finally pushed you to set-up shop? JC: I spent a year or so thinking and planning on what we wanted to do, and what we could do to have a lasting impact on our community. We landed on what we love doing most, and found that we were able to fill a huge void for the greater Modesto area. Opening Jaunt Adventure Gear has been an adventure in itself, but I don’t think the struggles we face are due to the economy, I think getting our community involved in what we’re all about is our biggest challenge. MV: What makes you different than the other sports stores in the area? What separates you from the pack of speciality online retailers that sell what you sell? JC: Jaunt Adventure Gear is the only speciality outdoor gear shop in Stanislaus county. There are a few chain stores around that may meet some basic needs for some of the adventurous sports that we love, but those who want very high quality equipment and outdoor lifestyle clothing should come visit us at Jaunt. There’s no doubt about it, online retailers are Jaunts biggest competitors. But I believe there’s a value to a shop like Jaunt that you’ll never get from an online retailer. Customer Service is our focus and our top priority at Jaunt, and when you shop online there’s no comparison to the level of service that you’d get from a local shop, and that goes for anything, not just outdoor

sporting goods. MV: Our favorite thing about Jaunt is the family vibe that the store has going. You treat customers like good friends and you spend your personal time with them. Tell us a little about that. Tell us about the trips that you take them on and the reading station that you created for them. JC: I love to hear about other peoples adventures, and I love helping people find new adventurous places to go. Modesto is such a great base camp for launching adventures, you’ve got so many options to choose from. My wife Nicole plans trips about one a month. Sometimes she’ll take people to places that we’ve been to before, and sometimes she goes to completely new places. It’s aimed at letting people know what’s right in our own backyard. It also lets people know that you don’t need to be Bear Grylls to get out there and enjoy our natural places. MV: Let’s talk shop – What does an adventure store sell? What are your favorite things to use personally? JC: We sell items that make it easier to enjoy your adventures, and also make them more fun. Some of my favorites include: Nemo sleeping pads - they bring a whole new level of sleeping comfort when you’re not sleeping in your bed. Suunto watches - whether you’re up in the mountains and want to check your elevation, or training for a marathon and want to keep track of your progression, these watches are great tools to keep track of your goals. GoPro cameras - I’ve been using one for the past couple months and they are just super fun to use for nearly anything you do. I’m impressed with the quality, durability and the many uses that people use them for. I could go on and on with other cool stuff we have at the shop.

Johnny’s CD is not out yet but the music will feature some straight ahead Jazz, and groove tunes to listen or dance to. The food will be catered by my son Christopher Benson who will bring back some of his New Orleans soul food, Gumbo, red beans and rice, crab cakes with a whole lot of appetizers, and Crown Cake for dessert. ACOUSTIC

URBAN Hello

everyone. I am on the road to Mr. Olympia 2013 in Las Vegas NV. Sitting passenger next to my brothers Beto Sanchez and Jesse Ramirez. Taking this time to reflect on this years’ journey. As many you may already know the yearly Modesto Music awards is back. Many believe this to be as important as many other national awards ceremonies. Many genres are represented in categories: Bands, Artists, Clubs, DJ’s and promoters all spreading the word so they may gather as many votes as possible. Once this is done we all gather at The State Theatre in Modesto. I will be co-presenting this years urban award. I would like to extend my invitation to anyone who would like to attend to log on and watch the event live on ModestoView.com. This year, I would like to see more public involvement. The ballots are up online and I will be posting my blog on each artist running for the award. Stay tuned on our website modestoview.com

Going Dutch make her think,” Dorothy Parker once famously replied when asked to use ‘horticulture’ in a sentence. Parker was a 1920’sera writer known for her razor-wire wit and sarcasm - certainly my type of gal. She was also a prominent member of the Algonquin Round Table, a group of writers, actors and critics who met for lunch daily at the Algonquin hotel in NYC for over a decade. Mostly they just engaged in lots of wordplay at these meetings, but members were also inspired to collaborate creatively as a result; the entire group even produced a Vaudevillian revue at one point I’ve been fascinated by this concept for some time now, and in the fall of 2011 I first endeavored to bring it into the present day. The New Algonquin Round Table consisted of myself and some other friends on the area music circuit, along with a few from the visual arts and comedy circles, among others. We met up at various downtown eateries (could never really settle on a suitable one) once a week or so, to discuss anything and everything. We drifted off into some other projects after a few months and have not reconvened since, but I still believe in the creative connections that can grow out of this. Therefore, let us try once again. If you’re a creative soul or organizer of events in the local arts scene, you are invited to gather with us at Café Deva on the 2nd Saturday afternoon of this month (the 12th) at noon. Brush your teeth and sharpen your tongue like Dorothy Parker used to, make some new connections, and see where it leads! World music reigns supreme around town this month. A few highlight performances: -Saturday 10/5 at Queen Bean Coffeehouse, merrymaking nomads The Hollands, a family folk band from Australia. They are some seriously passionate musical people (one of them is even named Banjo!) who are sure to get you singing along. 7 PM, $5 cover. -Saturday 10/12, British songwriter Susan Enan, who has recorded with the likes of Sarah McLachlan, gives a house concert

near downtown. Email cottersL@yahoo. com for info. -Friday 10/18 at Central Grace Community Church, 918 Sierra Dr. (corner of Sierra & 1st.), Maurice Tani of alt-country/ Americana group 77 El Deora, giving a solo set at the season opener of the Great Valley Acoustic series. Show starts at 8 PM. $10 donation. -Sunday 10/20, Murasaki Ensemble, playing a fusion of Latin American, Mideastern and Asian sounds with lots of diverse instrumentation, is featured at Congregation Beth Shalom (1705 Sherwood Ave.) at 3 PM. Tickets are $20. -Friday 10/25, Kerry Grombacher, a veteran composer of cowboy and campfire music from New Orleans, is featured at my Hotel Euterpe house concert series. Travis Lake and Dr. Blue of local groups Bad Medicine and The Dustbowl Children will open the show with a short set. Email crashdog3@yahoo.com for info. -Saturday 10/26, a new monthly music series continues at the Mistlin Art Gallery (1015 J St.) with Celtic folk-rock acts Tempest and Golden Bough. I’ve got high hopes for Mistlin to prove a fine listening-room venue, and we could surely use more of those around here. Doors for show are at 7, music kicks off at 8.

FIT My friend A. J. Mitchell by Efren Martinez

It wasn’t till JC Cox’s mid 60’s that he decided to live an active sports lifestyle. I met JC at one of my Triathlon events and I was immediately impressed with his fitness endurance abilities. Since then, our friendship has grown and I quickly found out that we both have walked down similar paths in life having much in common; our love of fitness, our passion for living a healthier lifestyle and we both had heart attacks. But just like myself, it wasn’t always about a healthy lifestyle. Back in 2005 JC had a massive heart attack and had to have 3 heart catheters and 2 stints put in to keep him rolling. JC shared with me that when he was released from the hospital, he couldn’t even walk one block without feeling fatigued. Sure it took him some time to recover, but JC was determined not to let this get the best of him. While recovering, JC would go out each

day for very short walks and mark his progress on the sidewalk. As the days went by, the markings on the street got farther and farther and his walks got longer and longer and in no time JC was done walking and turned to bicycling. JC loves to ride, and it was his cancer survivor friends from Team Triumph that empowered him with the courage to do better and live his healthy lifestyle no matter what.

They continued to support and inspire JC, that regardless of their setbacks or struggles in the fight against cancer they were out cycling giving it their all. Well, much has happen since those short walks in his neighborhood; JC is now a Tri-Athlete. Thus far he has completed 10 Triathlons, 20 Duathlons, 4 cycling time trials and 20 running events including The Modesto Marathon. OMG Modesto View friends, he’s also a proud member of The Shadow Chase Running Club because even though his cycling is his strongest of the three in a Triathlon, he felt he need to work on his running skills. These days you will find JC training 6 days per week for a total of about 15 hours and his nutrition includes a lean diet, no sugar with very little bread, butter, beef, and pork. When he’s not riding or swimming, you will find JC doing speed work on the track with his running club. Sounds like a professional training schedule, well rumor has it that he’s picked up some fitness sponsors. In a Triathlon, if you’re not paying attention, to this 71 year old rock of man in fitness, he will kick your astronauts in the competition. I’ve competed and trained with him, trust me on

this, he can hold his own and even though his heart may have been weak before, I’m happy to say that his heart is a lot stronger today and it doesn’t just have to do with his fitness and nutrition but more so because the man has a loving heart of gold. On October 12th you can meet JC and his other cycling club members of The Stanislaus County Bicycle Club at this year’s Century Ride. It takes place at The Fruit Yard outside of Modesto and in consists of 3 different distance rides. For more information on this fabulous cycling fitness event, fallow the link here. www.stancobike.org

Fitness Tips

• To maintain your cycling strength during the winter, invest in a spin bike or enroll in a spin class. • Doing 5K’s on a regular basis will help you with better times in a Triathlon • To prevent a running injury, invest in new running shoes every 300 miles (visit On The Run) in Modesto. • Maintaining your bike throughout the year will save you money and may help prevent a cycling accident do to a loose adjustment on your bike. Let’s Flip a Coin

My favorite time of the year is finally here! I’m excited for the pumpkin seeds, the yellow and orange leaves, the apple picking and everyone’s favorite, Halloween! Fall is a great time of year to spend with your friends and your family! A great way to spend time together is by going to the corn maze at Funworks. It is a tradition in our family! You are given a map of the maze and you find all the stations and once you found all of them you win a prize! Another fun thing to do with everyone is to go to Dell’ Osso Farms in Lathrup, California. There is a Haunted House, Pumpkin shooters, Pillow Jumping, A petting zoo, a corn maze and so much more! Make sure to check out that place. It’s Pumpkin Carving season! This year be creative and do a unique pattern! A place where you can get your pumpkin to carve is Dutch Hollow Farms right here in Modesto. Of course, the best part of fall is Halloween! Whether you’re trickor-treating with friends, going to a party

Hello friends, I had a great

or just hanging out, you want to make it a memorable one. So, of course you’ll want an amazing costume! Day Dreams and Nightmares is a unique costume shop on Carpenter Road where you can rent your favorite costume and have a blast! Decorating the house puts me in the Halloween spirit and I like homemade decorations best. An easy decoration you can make at home is a miniature ghost. Place a few cotton balls in the center of a paper towel and twist the paper towel under cotton to form a head shape. Draw a face on the top and tie it with a string! Use a lollypop instead of cotton balls if you want to hand out a spooky treat! Have a great Halloween!

September, Sheather Fest was awesome. Getting to hang out with traveling friends was awesome. I was lucky enough to play some fun shows. All in all it was a very nice close to the summer. Now it’s October again and with it comes fall, my birthday, the MAMA Awards and a heap of great local music. Check out the list at the end of this article for show details. I’ve pulled some strings to get some very fun nights set-up and I hope to see you out and in the mix. I also have an update on all things ìMy Friends and Iî. We are planning more shows with the next one scheduled for November 2nd at the Prospect Theater. We are also mak-

ing plans for MFaI Round 2 CD to begin recording in January of 2014. Last but not least, we are going to try and put together our first MFaI festival. I can’t tell you how happy we are to have had so much great support from so many people. If you haven’t heard the first CD yet, pick one up at a show or go give it a listen on Spotify. I know you will enjoy these great local, all-original songs. A few words about the MAMA awards- I look forward to the MAMAs every year but not just because it is another chance to win a trophy. I mean trophies are rad but I love the MAMAs because it is a chance to celebrate local music in and around Modesto. In this age of high-tech globalized everything, it is easy to forget to look at what’s happening in your own backyard. The MAMAs are an annual reminder that Modesto has a rich music scene. A lot of people, including myself put a lot of time and effort into keeping things rolling in Modesto. A lot of talented people spend a lot of time writing, practicing and putting their heart on the line in the name of art in this little community. We love when you come out and see our shows and we love when you come talk to us. Live music is like a two-sided coin - On one side, the performers, and on the other side, the dancers and the audience. Together we make the whole picture. Together we share experiences. Working and supporting together is what makes us a community. I hope you all have a great month and I will see you out at a show.
