Greetings Modesto Friends! Happy September!
Chris and Becky Murphy on the way to take Abbey to UC Berkeley. (Go Bears)
This is a big Murphy milestone. Both of our girls are out on their own. Madison living and working in San Francisco and Abbey now at UC Berkeley, all set up in her dorm and starting classes. It is so different around the house and a lot more quiet. But as I reflect on this, I feel two things beyond just the love and pride I have for my wife Becky and my girls. One, our girls grew up proud of being from Modesto. As they meet new friends, they are proud that Modesto is the home of a good childhood, George Lucas and American Graffiti. They grew up enjoying the music, art, community and culture we all talk about and celebrate in ModestoView each month. They remember the fun times at MoBand and watching the music in the plaza, and events at the McHenry museum, the cruise parades, concerts at the State and Gallo, school sports and dining on our favorite patios. They leave as ambassadors for the good in Modesto. Two. We now look at life here in Modesto, not so much as a parent seeking kid activities, but as adults, enjoying our friendships, exploring our city, visiting our art galleries, building our businesses, jamming with our fellow musicians, walking the art walks and eating and drinking in our favorite locally owned restaurant. It is an exciting point of view and we will continue to dedicate the pages of ModestoView, in print and on line to exploring and seeking out the good in our city for people of all ages. So with that, our ModestoView mission that we started back in 1997 is successful and it is growing every month. But there is so much more to do to make sure that Modesto stays on the right path to reach another new generation that will grow up proud of where they live and hopefully event one day will return and bring their education and talent with them. As we work hard to attract new professionals, young and not so young, we need to be able to showcase the best of Modesto so we can lure them from other cities. That is what ModestoView does and we are so proud to be invited to be a part of the recruitment team that showcases the good reasons to live here. People who read ModestoView know the good Modesto USA and what we can be. It is great to know that our mission to “Serve Civic Pride Daily” is making a positive impact on our kids, family and friends and hopefully new people that move to Modesto. We all have our part to do to make this the city we want. Thank you all for reading ModestoView and for all your ideas, comments and friendship. Thank you for listening, shopping, eating, drinking and living local. Chris Murphy Publisher and Founder, ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com

When you read this magazine or check us out online, make a point to visit these local businesses and tell them you heard about them in ModestoView. BAR B ITES & SLOSH BALL East Siders Rejoice! If you love P. Wexfords like we do you will be very happy. The ViewCrew was drinking pints and “shooting the boot” at P. Wex as they finished construction many years ago. We were there as the Boardroom opened in downtown and have been regulars there ever since. Now, we are planning on celebrating the opening of Rivets American Grill on Oakdale Road. This is going to be awesome and especially good for east side Modesto people that felt left out of the amazing local eating and drinking options. As Sept start, Rivets will be open and the theme is cool. AND, just like at P Wex and Boardroom, live music on a regular basis featuring the amazing Stangebrew starting Sept 6. Welcome from the ViewCrew and we look forward to many happy times.

Imagine this - You are sitting in front of your computer and your blinds are open so that you can see the glowing presence of a haunted mansion just across the street from the room that you are in. The window is open and there is a gentle breeze wrapping itself around you. It feels nice. Even though the wind is crisp and almost cold, it has the power to warm you because you are in a happy place. You are in a good place. A safe place. A place that you are proud to call home. It is hard to believe that September is here. If you read my August column, you were probably wondering if I would ever get through all the pain and heartache that made its way into my life during the course of the month. Today I am here and I am happy and I am not alone. Not being alone is very nice. Maybe this is all about age. I am 38 and 40 is so close that I can almost feel the eye exams and sore knees. I thought that I had a life plan with Dawn before she left. I’ve been positive, but it hasn’t been easy. I’ve had to buck up (think Oakdale bull rider) and get a little crazy to get what I wanted to make myself come to life again and I did just that. Like so many other stories in my life, this one is about a girl. A girl that won movie tickets from me one day. A girl that I called back every week to see if she wanted to go back to the movies. Maybe she might even want to go with me. Right now her pretty arms are resting on my window sill and looking out at the world that I described above. She was hurt when I found her and so was I. One day we just decided that we wanted to dust one another off and make a life. Here’s how it all went down in an easy-tounderstand format I explained to her that I was calling her weekly on Thursdays because my Fridays were never as special without her voice ringing through my head. After I explained that, she met my little girls and they approved of her and then one day she bought me a muffin and a mocha and sealed the

deal for me. I do a lot for people and I love it, but it was very special to have someone do something simple and special for me. I’m not sure how my September will go and I am ok with that. I know that I will see movies, listen to music and help plan the MAMA Awards, but beyond that, I’m just not sure. The thing is that I am ok with not knowing anything but the facts this time. Here are the facts - The leaves outside will turn to a shimmering gold color and blanket my sidewalk. She will make me laugh
every day. We will dance somewhere downtown. We will support all of our favorite local restaurants. It’s all pretty simple. Modesto has taught me how to love, folks. Let your guard down, get in the face of your goals and dreams and take what you need to make you happy. We only live once, right? Do it up right here in Modesto, USA where the Victorians are haunted, the cars are loud and little boys dream about space creatures until they become billionaires.
Taste of McHenry Village – Sept 19 6-9 pm This is a special month as it is the 60th Anniversary of McHenry Village. This was way out north on McHenry when it opened and 60 years later it is still a premier location for Modesto shopping. This month the Taste of McHenry will be a magical history tour where you can see and taste all that McHenry Village has to offer. Live music and wine tasting and lots of fun. Check out Modesto’s original shopping center and stop by and check out the 57 Chevy on the wall next to the new LaParilla. Tix are $12 for the tastings.

Summer Spritz
by Chris Murphy
Chris and Abbey in Venice drinking a Bellini
If you like lounging at cafes, hanging out at our local bars, especially those with patios or even with a group of friends like I do, you are always searching for something refreshing, not too sweet, not too sour and something that I can enjoy one, two or maybe even three. My daughter Abbey and I spent some time in France and Italy this summer where it was toasty warm on a few days and I rediscovered an old traditional drink and basically made it my mission to have one when ever I sat down. The “Spritz” is a perfect September splash of refreshment. life afternoon. Felt like a couple of Italian guys sitting in Piazza San Marco, people watching all afternoon. So fun.
the fresh taste of a shot of Lillet with 2 oz of favorite LaMarca Prosecco, and added a spash of tonic and a twist to blow our overheated taste buds away. Our trip around the world was amazing and we had some old school Italian sophistication at Concetta with Compari, some
We embarked on an world tour of Modesto and found some amazing traditional old school versions and some also some new twists of this simply refreshing drink. We started out with our local expert on the Spritz, Paul Tremayne at Concetta (and Tresetti, and Fuzio and Preservation and more things to come). Paul explained to us, as we awaited our refreshment, “The spritz is perfect for those warm summer days, you don’t want too much sugar and you want something lower in alcohol so you don’t get dehydrated. The Spritz is perfect for this”. Paul guided us to two of our favorite aperitifs, Campari and Aperol. How many of you have seen these bottles and wondered what to make with that? So at the counter of Concetta, we went Italian old style and we experienced the deliciousness of one shot of Aperol, 4 oz. Prosecco and a zest of Orange all served over ice. You can feel the refreshment wrap around your body. LaMarca Prosecco is a wonderful light sparking wine made in the Venice area and should be a must for your stash. Paul’s experience behind the bar, in the kitchen, with customers, and running many of our local favorite places make this one of the most educational and tasty bar stops we’ve ever made and snacked on an amazing pizza and talked food, drink all

Next we stepped up to the bar with our friend Rod Oldfield at Surla’s. Rod has
been making us tasty treats around town for years and always as something super refreshing on deck. Rod took us to to France with his idea of refreshment. Rod is a substitute teacher most of the week but shares his skills and friendship behind the bar with us and is a great addition to the Surla’s team. You can’t go wrong and Chef John’s appetizers are amazing. So Rod combined

Our next stop took us around the world in the other direction where we found ourselves at Raw Sushi. Melinda Jaco brings so much creativity and fun to the bar and even keeps her own stash of secret ingredients to make any regular drink special (ask for a Margarita Melinda’s Way sometime). This time, we went for the Zen refresh and started with a Zipang Sparking Sake! Out of left field, we have discovered a new favorite. 2 parts Zipang Sparking Sake with 2 parts special Hana Raspberry Sake and a few fresh raspberries were simply a mind blower. The ice cold bubbly drink is perfect and matches up so well with all of the fresh raw sushi appetizers.

CHEF Dana~licious Delighted @ Deva
by Dana Johnson FB: Dana’s Family Kitchen FOX40: See Chef Dana every 1st Friday of the month
Oh yes Modesto, if you love melt in your mouth food, soulful blues music, and/or have an eye for passionate art, Deva Café has it all! It was a Sunday morning in downtown Modesto when I was drawn in by decadent aromas of breakfast, the inescapable sound of the Poorhouse Millionaires, and local artists adorning the walls throughout Deva Café. This is the only place I know of in all of Stanislaus County where breakfast is served on Sundays with a free live band playing. What a fabulous way to indulge into Sunday, breakfast with the Millionaires! I had such a fabulous time on that Sunday, I decided to taste a bit further. I called Big Earl Matthews, lead singer of the Poorhouse Millionaires, also known for Big Earl & the Crying Shame, to meet with me & fill me in on the awesome find. Plus Earl is the Blues Editor for our very own Modesto View! Check out his well-connected to the blues world articles! Earl at the perfect age of 36 has been familiar with Deva’s as far back as the 90’s when he used to be the dishwasher! Now his band plays there every Sunday from 10am to Noon and they come in an hour earlier to enjoy their favorite menu items! Band members: Ray Vazira, Nathan Ignacio and Eli Lester love to play this weekly tasty gig, too! Earl’s girlfriend, Felicia and their 4 grandkids are also huge Deva food fans! Earl told me he loves Deva’s sausage and eggs with the house-baked mega thick wheat toast. Lol when asked if we wanted fresh raspberry or apricot jam, we answered the same “both!” Earl also can be spied there during the week lunching on the meatloaf sandwich on focaccia bread or
10
an irresistible chicken salad sandwich. Lorena Loftis has been the owner of Deva’s for the past 10 years, though originally established 21 years ago. Lorena and her wife Jamie have been together 7 years and have a 5 year old son Bryce who loves to spend time helping out at the family restaurant. Lorena and Jamie have shared in Deva’s business venture together while still frequenting other local faves like Vito’s Ristorante, Papachino’s, and Fuzio’s. Lorena confessed she is guilty of eating one chocolate chip cookie at Deva’s every day! I’d eat way more than that if the truth be told! Lorena’s fave sandwich is Euphoria; warm breast of chicken with fresh tomato, lettuce, onion, Jarlsberg cheese and herb mayo on focaccia bread. As I was listening to Earl tell me about some of the other reasons he likes his band to play @ Deva’s; I found me devouring a crepe that I created myself from the 16 choices of fillings! I went with the bacon, feta, basil, spinach, and garlic! Totally Dana~licious!!! I also munched down the red roasted potatoes, ultra thick sourdough toast, and alternated bites with Deva’s White Mischief white chocolate~ caramel hot coffee drink. As I was likely (and rudely smacking, sorry Earl!) Earl talked about just how nice the acoustics are there & that he doesn’t even

have to plug in. He was smiling telling me about the great lighting, the friendly feeling soon as you walk in, and how he really adores this place. Then the big interruption!!! Lorena brings us more food! A crepe, not just any crepe but one stuffed with fresh strawberries, bananas, Nutella, and covered in whipped cream! I went straight for the fork & reminded Earl he had a meeting to get to while I kinda (haha barely!) insisted he stay & share this dream crepe with me! Without fighting or injury Earl & I did a pretty good job of polishing off the plate! As I visited with Lorena I found we share the same passion when it comes to high quality, freshly prepared, and Dana~licious foods. I was equally impressed how clean she insists her restaurant must be maintained. I asked Lorena where she sees herself in 5 years from now, with a full smile and her eyes bright she said “Right here.” My first thought was; Great for me and the
rest of the food loving families and friends of Modesto! In lieu of a clip out recipe this month come into Deva Café and order your own recipe, the combinations are numerous with 16 filling choices for an omelet, scramble, or a crepe! The lunch menu also boasts homemade soups, salads, pasta salads, and hot/cold sandwiches. Deva Café has a decent selection of wine, beer, and I had champagne with my Sunday brunch! Modesto View signature question to Lorena: Beatles or Stones? “That’s a toughy, um, Beatles but they are aging me” Yep, that’s another reason why I stick with the Stones for their youthful energy!!!

MAMA VOTE FOR MAMA! by Chris Murphy
In 2000, over 300 people jammed into Club Max at the Doubletree to celebrate the very first Modesto Area Music Association Awards, The MAMAs. Now 14 years later, we are ready for the 2013 MAMA Awards. Modesto has so much amazing musical talent that Chris Ricci and I wanted to tell the world all about it and create a way to showcase our incredible music community. Our community is the best. They help present events, put on giant festivals like X fest, set up PA systems, help each other other, play in many bands and make this a place like very few other cities. We have Urban, Pop, Reggae, Indie, Acoustic, Met-
al, Punk, Cover Bands (Blue Collar), Jazz, Blues, Rockabilly, American and so much more. Modesto has events both large and small and a great network of promoters, restaurants and cafes that host music and what would a music scene be without comedians. On October 23, live from the fabulous historic State Theatre, the results of the MAMA Awards will be announced and broadcast live on ModestoView. In between all of these awards, there will be one of a kind live performances and a very special Lifetime Presentation to the legendary KC “Don Juan” Maddox of the Maddox Brothers and Rose to honor and recognize Modesto’s place in the history of the birth of Rock and Roll. You will be amazed. This will truly be a special year and our local music community is so very excited and our MC of the MAMAs will be Mr. Alan Sanchez of Good Day Sacramento.
Flying Blind at the first MAMA Awards in 2000 How does this work? You are the voter. The music loving fans get to choose who wins the MAMA Awards. Voting will begin on September 7th. Voting will take place on line at www.modestoareamusic.com This is the event of the year for the Modesto community and it is celebrated by all of the radio stations and all local media. Truly a community event of dedication, donation and teamwork. In the meantime, we want you to go see local live music. We want you to buy local music and buy local band merchandise. Every sticker, T-shirt and CD you buy helps keep our music scene alive. Go see local bands and support the bars and
restaurants that feature live music. Live music makes living special. We need you to tell the City of Modesto and those that are in charge of regulating live music, that “YOU WANT MORE LIVE MUSIC!” We need music and nightlife friendly policies that make it easy and attractive for the people of Modesto as well as our business and tourist visitors to enjoy our live local music. It all has to work together. To learn more, go to www.modestoareamusic.com and make sure you VOTE FOR MAMA. Eat, drink, listen and live local

INTER Susan Lilly - Stanislaus County Librarian by Chris Murphy I love libraries.
This is one of the best places to browse ever. Row after row of hardbound books, covered in plastic, with Dewey decimal numbers on the book spines, subject after subject, fiction, non fiction with another row after that, seemingly endless. True, the county library has a lot of books – 726,408 to be exact. Add books on CD, DVDs, magazines and newspapers and the number tops 787,000. The number is endless when you add electronic and subscription volumes. This is knowledge, all available to the people, to everyone. It is said that Ernest and Julio Gallo learned the wine business at the library back in the ‘30s. The value of this collection of information and material is estimated at $19 million. That sounds pretty impressive by itself, but, what’s really amazing is that it only scratches the surface of what the library provides and the education it can provide. Libraries are freedom and libraries inspire learning. But it is not all just books. Our libraries provide so much more. We asked our friend Susan Lilly of the Stanislaus County Library to give us her top 10 reasons the library is so awesome and is vital for the future. Susan does an amazing job bringing awareness to the library and assists the community in connecting with the library. So who better to ask? Take it away Susan:
Top Ten List of Things to Do at Your Library: 10) Tap into technology at the library. Every library branch in the county offers free wifi for your laptop, tablet or other devices. 9) Watch your struggling reader build skills and confidence by reading to a dog. Or give your pre-schooler a head start in learning to read by attending weekly Story Times and participating in the youth Reading Awareness program. 8) Borrow a Kill-A-Watt power monitor to learn how you can save money on your home energy use. They’re available for checkout at all county libraries through grants from Modesto Irrigation District

and Turlock Irrigation District. 7) Apply for a passport at the Modesto Library. And why not check out some travel books to help plan your next big trip? Attend a scrapbooking class to learn how to creatively display the amazing pictures from your big trip. 6) Lighten your load by downloading an eBook to take on your vacation. Be sure to sign up with your library card through the 3M Cloud Library app so you can check out the books for free. 5) Join a book discussion at the Modesto Library. Already in a book club? Check out sets of books for your group at the Nick W. Blom Salida Regional Library. Just ask for Book Club in a Box. 4) Volunteer to help an adult learn to read or deliver books to a homebound resident. Giving the gift of reading can open up a whole new world. 3) Visit the Friends of the Modesto Li-

brary’s Little Shop. Located inside the Modesto Library, The Little Shop offers used books, supplies and small gift items. Stop by when you visit the Farmers Market on Thursdays and Saturdays. Contact the Friends at 209-573-3142 or visit www. modestolibraryfriends.org. 2) Have you ever wondered where your books go when you put them in the curbside book return on I Street? Find out by taking a Behind-the-Scenes Tour of the Modesto Library. Call 558-7817 to arrange a tour. 1) Try out the library’s value calculator to find out how much money you can save by using your library. Compare the value of your library usage to the average of $20 per year contributed by each Stanislaus County household through their taxable purchases. Visit www.stanislauslibrary.org and use the library calculator link under helpful links.
Wow, thanks Susan!
Modesto and Stanislaus County residents recognize the value of their libraries. Last year, voters reaffirmed their support for libraries when they overwhelmingly voted yes (81.93 percent) to the continuation of a 1/8-cent sales tax earmarked for library services. This dedicated tax provides most of the funds that make up the library’s annual budget. Friends of the Library (there is group for each branch) and the Stanislaus Library Foundation (www.stanislauslibraryfoundation.org) also raise funds and advocate for the library. The Library Foundation funds the Summer Reading Program, teen programs and has contributed funds for eBooks. Friends of the Modesto Library have also supported eBooks, children’s programs and furnishings for the library. Wondering what’s coming next? The Modesto Library will host a local author fair on Sept. 21. The public is invited to meet the authors, purchase books and have

In the middle decades of the 20th century, the Modernist architecture of Modesto, California, was on the cutting edge of environmental and artistic design and it received national attention. In the 1940s, the New York Museum of Modern Art published three books featuring Modesto architecture and a photo of a Modesto home was on the cover of the catalogue for its trend-setting 1944 exhibition on modern architecture. From the 1940s through the 1960s, many books, professional journals, and popular magazines published articles on Modesto buildings. The city’s national stature in architecture began with the Heckendorf House designed by John Funk in 1939, but many more significant pieces of architecture were built in the following years. The Modesto Art Museum has so far documented more than 85 Modernist buildings and landscapes in Modesto from 1939 to 1972 by noted 20th century designers including John Funk, William Wurster, Frank Lloyd Wright, Gardner Dailey, Henry Hill, Cliff May, Anshen and Allan, Christopher Alexander, William Turnbull, Brian Green, Joseph Esherick, SOM, Thomas Church, Lawrence Halprin, and many more. Modesto’s architecture was a model for other cities and a laboratory in the development of a distinctive California style that blended the indoors with the outdoors, Central Valley Modernism. This month, at the archi-

tecture festival, the museum will premiere the new movie about Modesto’s remarkable modernist architecture and how it influenced the development of domestic architecture in California and beyond. The movie, Modesto Modernism, is made possible by a grant from the San Francisco based Creative Work Fund. The grant enabled the museum to employee two local movie makers, Jessica Gomula-Kruzic and Steve Arounsack. Working with a team of local movie making professionals, Jessica and Steve have created a 16 minute short that documents and introduces viewers to Modesto’s extraordinary and long-forgotten architectural heritage, and serves as a catalyst for community conversation on livability for Modesto’s future. Come to the free premiere at the Architecture Movie Night, Friday, September 20, 6 pm, at the State Theatre. The Modesto Architecture Festival runs from Sept 14-21 at locations around Modesto. I know, I keep pinching myself too. It is so very exciting to make presentations to local groups and see the reaction when they learn our history that has been right there below the surface all these years. Last month, we did a great presentation to the Modesto Rotary Club and featured the music of Tony T and Rockin’ Rick. So many people in town have a story about the early Maddox Brothers and Rose days. It is so very exciting as the legendary 91 year old K.C. “Don Juan” Maddox is alive and well and still making music. BIG RATZ Reunion - The Ratz Redux! by Suzanne Autry and Kate Trompetter
Modesto
and the Stanislaus County area produced great live music through the 1940’s and ‘50’s, including early country acts like The Maddox Brothers and Sister Rose and R&B bands such as The Merced Blue Notes. By 1964, the British musical invasion spearheaded by the Beatles altered the musical landscape locally as well as nationally. The Ratz were one of the premier Modesto area bands of the mid-1960’s, drawing big crowds by performing incendiary covers of songs by the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and the Kinks, mixed with American rock and R&B standards. Distinctively attired in their trademark two-tone bell bottoms and velour shirts, The Ratz regularly whipped crowds into a frenzy with their trade-marked versions of “Under My Thumb”, “I Ain’t No Miracle Worker”, “G.L.O.R.I.A”, “Scene of the Crime”, and “I’m Alright”. They played every venue in the Modesto area, notably the California Ballroom and the Purple Turnip, plus gigs in Monterey, Santa Cruz at the Cocoanut Grove, Lake Tahoe, and the Bay Area, including the Longshoreman’s Hall in San Francisco, home of Ken Kesey’s Acid Tests. On one memorable occasion, The Ratz opened for Van Morrison and Them at the old Strand Theater on 10th Street. Though there were several changes in personnel early, the core of the band at the height of its popularity from 1965 through 1967 consisted of Ray Rector on drums, Daniel Johnson on keyboards and vocals, Patrick Durr on guitar and vocals, Rick Edmond on bass. On September 21, 2013 The Ratz, along with local bands The Wrongdoers and Home Grown, will come together again for the first time in 46 years to support a fundraiser for The George Rogers Neighborhood Park. The George Rogers Neighborhood Park Committee will use the funds raised to continue to provide support and activities in Modesto’s

Modesto’s Vintage Venues by Chris Murphy
In the 60s, the Purple Turnip was located at 950 10th Street and was the place where many of the local bands played. The Strand Theatre was used for concerts was host to many legendary performers like Van Morrison, Them & Arthur Lee and Love, The Grass Roots, The Golliwogs (who later became Creedence Clearwater Revival) and others in 1967. Other shows at The Strand included an R&B show headlining Peaches and Herb and a show that headlined The Sir Douglas Quintet (with Freddy Fender in the band). The Modesto Skate Rink at 250 Tully Road, (burned down in 80s) hosted concerts over the years including the Doors, Grateful Dead, Sammy Hagar, Pablo Cruise and many more. The Uptown Arena hosted boxing as well as big concerts. The Turlock War Memorial and California Ballroom were places you could easily book, make flyers and get some KFIV promo. During the 1980s’ the Sports Page was the biggest nightclub and remains in business today as Crocodile’s where classic rock is played every weekend. Other venues included Charlie Tuna’s, The Vintage, The Tree Frog Tavern, and Gilligan’s, and the legendary Fable Room, located in the basement of the Covell Hotel, that was renamed Dazzles Underground in the 80s. Today, the Historic Cruise Route of 10th and 11th Streets is the center of the nightlife scene and is a big part of the downtown renaissance of Modesto that began with the restoration of the State Theatre and the opening of Tresetti’s later in ‘94. The Fat Cat Music House and Lounge was the first club in the new era of music and dancing in Modesto USA and lead to the new excitement in downtown Modesto. The Purple Turnip once stood where the Palladium Nightclub is today. Hero’s Brewpub is making a big push with all ages live music, Barkin’ Dog hosts all ages live music and features an open Jam with Dave Dow on Thursdays and Queen Bean is an all ages showcase on a regular basis for shows on their patio as well as Firkin and Fox welcomes many of our acoustic musicians. Support places that support live music with the Gallo Center and the State Theatre right there in the mix. It is really special. Live music is still a very important part of the Modesto, USA entertainment scene featuring a variety of nightclub, restaurant and theatre venues that cater to the “All Ages” crowd and the over 21s. There is a huge opportunity now to create a new vibrant 10th St that is hospitable to live music and make this a musical and cultural promenade between the Gallo Center and the Modesto Centre Plaza. We need music diversity, places to play and city policies that encourage and most importantly support live music and venues. Let’s make it happen. Would love to hear your comments and ideas at chrism@modestoview.com The Modesto Area Music Association recognizes the best musicians, bands, promoters, events and music venues and restaurants/cafes that present live music. www.modestoareamusic.com

AUTHOR “The Bicyclist”
by Ken White
You never saw him without his bike. At the park, going to the bowling alley or pinball palace, on the streets, at the hospital, or back home to his mother’s house alongside Pike Park. It’s how he got from Point A to Point B. In a town of 30,000, it was practical. We all thought he was an odd duck. Of course, he couldn’t drive because the cleft palate had made him mean and angry and anti-social. But, he earned our grudging respect with his athleticism. He was a natural. He could have played baseball, football, or run track. Except for the cleft palate. You never saw him without his bike. Carrying groceries home in the chrome basket, smoking a cigarette at a political rally in the park, going to a movie downtown, or back home to the house where his high school friend was raised and now lived and offered sanctuary. It’s how he got around. In a town of 150,000, it was hard, but not

But, we put up with him because he was our classmate. Plus, he was funny. He could have done stand-up. Except for the addictions and the damage done. You never saw him without his bike. seniors at Ralston Tower, handing out clean needles to the junkies in Tower Park, swaying to the beat of MoBand, or living in his tent down by the river. It was how he got from here to there and back again. In a town of over 200,000, it was dangerous riding a bike. Nobody paid attention. Nobody thought a bicyclist had the right of way. Nobody cared. We all thought he was crazy nuts. Of course, he couldn’t drive because something had happened
in the Iraqi desert when he was protecting our freedom. There was no “there” there anymore. But, we accepted him because of his kindness. He could have been a saint. Except for the scars, visible and not. In a world driven by expectations, they had none. They took things as they came and made the best of them; the sad and bad situations. They lived in the moment. Right here, right now. And they were never disappointed.

here’s all the time going? An hour feels more like half an hour. What happened? Have the computers, texts and tweets accelerated time? Is the universe spinning faster? Sure seems like people have a lot less time than before. Technology has countless advantages but it does not necessarily buy us extra time as we expected it would. We are busier than ever. That urge to constantly want to get more things done. Even when we might have a chance to relax, waiting for a plane or a train, waiting in line, sitting in traffic – we want to be productive because we have the means. Or we just want to kill time. We entertain ourselves. With the click of a button we search for answers for any topic under the sun. We are learning and
gathering so much information so quickly. All that multitasking we have come accustomed to is overwhelming and makes us nervous and tense. In this ultra busy era it is a blessing to have a regular practice of Yoga, T’ai Chi or similar meditative activities. The time has come to find a TIME OUT. taichi4modesto.com or call (209) 572-4518

ALL AGES Football Season
by Leia Johnson
Football season is finally here and everyone’s getting excited! I’m looking forward to my third year of cheering for the Central Saints. The Saints are a Pop Warner football and cheer league in the Tri Valley Youth Football League or TVYFL. Being a member of Saints Cheer means we learn and do a lot of different things that are important in life. We work out and stay fit. We work to stay positive and spirited all the time. A couple of weeks ago we went to JAMZ camp. There, we learned new dances and how to stunt! In cheer, it’s always fun to spend multiple years with the same people and group but we also get to make so many new friends too! This will be my last year cheering for the saints before high school and I look forward to working with the younger cheerleaders just as others did for me when I was new. I will be sad to go but I am happy that others will get to go through the same experience as I did. Of course, my favorite part is the cheerleading! And why are we there? The football players, of course! And they work really hard too! They practice rain or shine and it pays off. The Central Saints Varsity team was undefeated last year and won the TVYFL Super Bowl! So, now that it’s FINALLY time for football and fall school sports, it is your turn to cheer. If your family member, neighbor, friend or anyone you know plays football or plays any other sport, go out and cheer them on! I can say from experience that

it’s such great feeling having people in the stands for you! Since it is waterpolo season, you can cheer from the pool deck. The highschool football games are serious fun for teens all over the area and there are games on Thursday and Friday nights most every week. The local cross country teams run at legion park and you can go cheer for them as they run. You can also cheer for your local musicians! Queen Bean, P. Wexford’s, Hero’s and Barking Dog are all ages places where our awesome local musicians play. Barkin’ Dog regularly hosts youth bands All of these things make Modesto a great place to cheer for!

When the autumn weather turns leaves to flame, one hasn’t got the time for the waiting game, oh the days dwindle down to precious few…those few precious days I’ll spend with you. September’s song gives me pause for reflection on the changing of the seasons and those little things that make one’s life worthwhile, family and friends and a life well lived. Though times are tough there is much in our area of the world to be thankful for like, the music and art scene in our community. My band Ultra Lounge will be playing at the Barkin’ Dog Grill on Sept. 21st with the usual cast of criminals and special guest multi percussionist Derek Rolando of Desert Chant. Derek is a seasoned percussionist who’s graced the stage with alumni from the Santana Band and Escovedo Family band and others. The band plays Jazz, R & B, funk and this time round a lot of Latin grooves. The Gallo Center has been on fire with bringing in the acts: Straight no Chaser, REO Speedwagon, Johnny Mathis, Gordon Lightfoot, Yellowjackets and George “Thoroughly Good” was “bad to the bone.” Coming Sept REO Speedwagon 9/16, Johnny Mathis, Gordon Lightfoot. Thorogood was great and even in the cheap seats up in heaven where I sat, the show was incredible! Yes John Griswold says he’s throwing in the Jazz promotional towel but he’s working with Gallo to promote quality Jazz Shows, so come out for the Yellowjackets. The show will be in the small intimate hall and tickets will sell out. John has also booked jazz musician Slim Man, coming to the Mistlin Gallery on September 28. Another crowd pleaser will be the Modesto Symphony Orchestra when it goes Picnic at the Pops with Magical Mystery Tour a la Beatles on Sept. 7th. Check out www. modestosymphony.org. More bright moments in store for the month. The State Theatre continues with quality offerings in film and music series. Sept 27th Mexican Songstress & Latin

(Rockabilly), 21st Triple D, (Rock), and 28th Broken Trojan, (Punk & Rock). On the kickin out the jams side: Barkin’ Dog Thursdays with Dave Dow, (Jazz), Queen Bean Sundays hosts jam with acoustic, rock music. Modesto Sound has a funraiser Sept 28th at 3440 Wycliffe Drive at a private residence. On the bill in a garden setting so far are: Francesca Bavaro, Madie Boyd, and Lisa Davila. URBAN Representing your self the right way! by Tru Luv Lopez W
eather you are looking for you or your group to be recognized, booked or shopping to record labels, it is very important to represent yourself in a professional manner. Do not assume that since we are in this music industry, that you can be unprofessional. Spell check your messages! From experience, I suggest your presentation be professional. A sharp Promo Press kit is very important to have. Be creative, you’re not the only one out there looking to be booked or signed. The days of “Check out my music it’s dope” is not only played out, it makes you seem desperate. Make sure that the subject line of your email is “extremely important”. Make it clever and creative. Say “hello”, “please”, and “thank you” in every email. Make sure to include in your message links to your discography, social networking sites and any posted music, videos or press kit. You can also just gather this together in a document with a bio and some photos. Now you have a press kit! Steer away from lying to promoters and organizations on units sold and bookings etc. Not only is you reputation on the line you will soon be burning bridges and lose contacts. If that does not work, maybe the person you are seeking isn’t interested at the moment. Never talk about them in a disrespectful mater and put them down. How does that make you look? Challenge yourself and take your experience with humility!
Samples of press kits Personally at times when you may feel you have reached the end of your ropes, it seams miracles may happen. When your professional communication with others, networking and character gives you the edge, promoters and labels may contact you! For example in 2010, I was contacted and booked for XFest as The Fiesta boyz, as a local in Modesto and it was an honor. Now I am booked in 2 states as an independent artist. That being said, back to the representation, your music will set the tone, that’s if you have one at all. This is Tru Luv Lopez and I’m off traveling starting in Sept. Stay tuned on truluvmusic. com This is the Urbano “Latinos Stand UP”

Dial L for Loves It! by Aaron Rowan L
ordy f---ing lordy! The new Not An Airplane record, Unpredictable Fame, has found its way into this world, and it is sweet. The last effort by this homegrown trio was named editor’s pick in Rolling Stone, but this latest album is as explosive as….. well, that fellow who found his way onto the cover of the above named magazine recently, to much controversy. The opener ’Self Portrait’ is a stripped-down acoustic tune, but from there, the album wanders down a myriad of sonic pathways, all the while maintaining an Americana/oldtimey feel. ‘It Was Probably Science’ and ‘Conventional Matters and Daily Smirks’ highlight the band’s hard-rocking side, as well as frontman Nick Shattell’s trademark philosophy-heavy lyrics. ‘You, Me and Everyone Else We Know’ goes from some Old West saloon piano to a medieval-sounding horn passage and back again. Not quite like anything I’ve heard before, but of course, that is true of most every tune by this unique outfit. www.notanairplane. com. A few of the good times happening around town this month: -Friday 9/6 - Appalachian/folk duo Loves It! are coming back to town, on tour from Austin. Local folk/Americana stars Heaven Lindsey-Burtch and Adam Bishop & The Young Guns are taking part in this exciting lineup as well. 7 PM at Café Deva (1202 J St.), $5 cover. -Friday the 13th - a very lucky day! I’ve got some special headliners coming in - the kinfolk of the great Linda Ronstadt! The Ronstadt Generations trio consists of her brother Michael G. and his sons Pete and Michael J. They carry on not only Linda’s legacy, but a family musical legacy stretching back to the 1800’s. Michael J. is a virtuoso cellist, and will give a special solo set as an extra treat. Our very own Patty Castillo Davis will be getting things fired up with her Southwestern-infused, not-quitecountry sound. We’ll be at Barkin’ Dog Grill, 940 11th St. Show at 7:30, $10 cover.
Heaven Lindsey-Burtch -Saturday 9/14 - new trio The Rainy Day Ramblers, led by local songwriter Rainy Escobar, will be playing their mix of country and swing at Barkin’ Dog from 7-10 PM. The band also features Bill Sharpe on standup bass and Eric Johnson on lead acoustic. -Thursday 9/19 - various live acts for the monthly Art Walk. Acclaimed singer/ songwriter Elyse Miller will be visiting from Fort Collins, CO to perform at Peer Recovery Art Project (1222 J St.) from 5:30 to 8:30; and blues/rock/jam band Broken Injun headlined at Café Deva for ModestoSound’s monthly showcase, along with other artists. Music starts there at 6 PM. -Friday 9/27 - my fellow house concert host Sue Cotter features David Nigel Lloyd, a stellar craftsman of British/Celtic/ traditional-inspired tunes. Originally from Kenya (and he’s got the birth certificate to prove it), he’s performed all over the U.S., Canada and the UK, but has been a CA resident for decades. RSVP to Sue at cottersL@yahoo.com.

FIT My friend A. J. Mitchell by Efren Martinez Too tired, it’s been a long day, legs hurt, it’s too hot, it’s too cold. Sometimes any reasoning beyond the fact that we are just being lazy will comfort us so we don’t have to separate ourselves from the couch or that bag of chips to exercise. Sure, I’ve been there, well for about a minute until the vision of my friend A.J. Mitchell enters my mind. Then I’m all about getting in my fitness. For AJ any of the above excuses is just nonsense. Just recently I spotted AJ racing in one of The ShadowChase Running Club races. AJ is a phenomenal athlete. Even though he’s been paralyzed from the waste down all of his life, he doesn’t let that stop him. AJ’s new to the club and he joined because according to him, he just needed a little more motivation to get out and start being active again. For AJ living a healthy
lifestyle is just part of who he wants to be, and not only is he competitive, he also loves being active through racing. And yes, regardless of his Spina Bifida, AJ’s quick and will leave you in the dust in any race. Recently I asked AJ what sparks the fire to get his wheels moving so fast. With a smile, AJ proudly referred to his newly beloved ShadowChase friends, “The ShadowChasers have helped me in many ways, they’ve helped me become more outspoken and open, also they have helped me push myself to a whole new fitness level. It’s really helped me see what I can do regardless of having a disability.” Thus far AJ’s has entered around 35 races from 100 meters to a half marathon and he has his sights on not only racing a full marathon, but to compete in The Boston Marathon and a century race. You go AJ! For this DJ in fitness; I
look forward every morning to reading your posts on facebook of rolling out the miles on hills, racing in races and your positive attitude. All of this pushes me not only to be a better athlete, but also to be a better person. Thank you for that. Modesto View readers, if you too would like to follow my friend AJ’s progress, I invite you to friend him at A.J. Paralyzaher Mitchell on Facebook or you can personally meet this inspirational fellow at The Peace Officers Memorial race in Modesto on September 23rd . I asked AJ if he could share a few words with our Modesto View Readers and here’s
what he had to say. “The words I like to live by are “go hard or home”. If you are at home thinking you can’t run a race, it’s not impossible. It may take some time but you can do it, look at me I have been through 30 very tough surgeries and I am still out here giving my all, it’s doable and I look forward to meeting all of you at my next race.”
Fitness Tip Raising your heart rate to at least 65% 3-4 times a week with only 3040 minutes of fitness per session along with a clean diet will help you live a hart healthy active lifestyle.

BLUES
NON PROFIT St. Vincent De Paul Goes for a Record Words and photos by Ruben J. Porras
Standing outside of the offices of the St.
Vincent De Paul Church Food Distribution Program is a humbling experience. The current state of our economy has created a need within our community that has always existed but has grown tremendously over recent years. The team behind the St. Vincent De Paul program has had to raise the bar and think outside of the lets say – grocery bag – to fill the need and they are in the process right now of stepping up their game in a big way. If you have ever considered donating canned foods, this is the time to do it. Volunteers at the Oakdale Road church are working toward a lofty goal of collecting 30,000 cans of food during their current drive. Success will not only feed hundreds of local families, it will also earn the church a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. That in turn will create a great deal of needed awareness for the program. The numbers involved in a program of this nature are staggering. Program auditor, Donna Lawler explained that between 60 and 161 bags go out to local families daily. In 2012, the program distributed 8,000 bags. This year between January and June, 4,714 bags were distributed. Each bag contains 10 essential items and two to three novelty items if they are available. Basic toiletries are also distributed if available. Committee point person, Tatiana MerrickCasiano explained that the work involved in the program involves a team of 30 daily volunteers and what she refers to as “40-50 little elves” that work on an as-needed basis. “The volunteers that work with us work tirelessly and they don’t do it for recognition,” said Merrick-Casiano.” “Some of the volunteers that we have now once utilized our services and now they essentially return the favor. That is the mindset here. It takes a dedicated team and we have that.” One current volunteer, Kyle Kemper, need-
24
ed the program at one point in his life and in an effort to give back to the community and do volunteer work, he returned to volunteer with the program. “I have some free time now and I can’t think of a better way to use it,” said Kemper. This program helped me. It helped to save my life. I enjoy helping very much. This is very fulfilling to me.” St. Vincent De Paul has been working with the community to provide food distribution services for over 15 years and they have done so via word-of-mouth and through area social services programs. Those resources are effective but a wider push is needed to make the goal of 30,000 cans for this current promotion. Donations of food can be made at Jaunt Adventure Gear on the corner of 10th and Needham Streets in Modesto, Castle Real Estate on the corner of J and 14th Streets downtown or at St. Vincent De Paul at 1813 Oakdale Road. The church can also accept monetary donations in any amount. Donations for the Guinness Book Drive need to be made by September 8th but donations are always accepted at the church’s offices. Volunteer, Cliff Judd wrapped up our interview with the team at St. Vincent De Paul by making a statement that made what they do very clear. “Jesus wanted to help the poor,” said Judd. Editor’s note: Those in need can register at St. Vincent De Paul to pick up food on Tuesdays from 10am-12pm and Thursdays from 1pm-3pm. The program is income-based but nobody is turned away. Proof of income, valid photo identification and a basic application is required.

The English are Coming! by ‘Big’ Earl Matthews
Sheatherfest is the creation of Willy Tea Taylor from the band The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit and is named after Dave Sheather from Kent, England. Dave is a music lover - strike that - Dave is a complete music-nut/evangelist. When Dave decides he loves your music he throws his back into it. Hosting traveling musicians in his home, helping connect people from the US with European bookers and sharing the heck out of Youtube videos and links for his social media followers. Dave is a musician’s best friend and a man who deserves love. When Willy found out that his friend Dave was coming all the way from England to Oakdale just to see one of his favorite bands, TGLTSO, Willy took that as a sign and made sure that Dave would get a firstclass show and then some. Willy brought together some of his musical friends and threw a party in Dave’s honor. He called this party Sheather Fest. Now in its fourth year, Sheather Fest features bands and solo performers from all over the country. The guests of honor, Dave and his wife Sue are being treated this year to a 4-day event with a “Celebrity Bowling Tournament” and a play written and performed by Willy Taylor and three days of music. This years Line up includes Folk, Blues, Singer/Songwriter, Country, Americana
and more than a few bands that defy classification. Just to hit you with a few names, Possessed By Paul James (Austin, TX), The Calamity Cubes (Kansas City, KC), Willie Watson (formerly of Old Crow Medicine Show), The Haunted Windchimes (Pueblo, CO), TGLTSO (Oakdale CA), Eli Alsup (Modesto, CA), Bloody Ol’ Mule (Oklahoma City, OK), yours truly along with so many more local and national acts that I can’t list them all. This is going to be so much fun that you will pinch yourself to make sure you are not dreaming… did I go too far with that last line? Heck no! What I mean to tell you is that if you enjoy American roots music, this is the show for you. Sheatherfest schedule notes: Friday Night at the Cow Track Lounge in Oakdale will be very limited, in fact it is over halfway sold out as of the time of this writing. Saturday’s show will be at the Rivers Edge in Knights Ferry and Sunday’s show will take place just down the road a block at Rick’s Saloon which is also in Knights Ferry. Friday and Sunday are 21 and over, Saturday’s event is all-ages.Tickets are available for all 3 days while supplies last and also for individual days.
