For whatever reason, all of the performing arts seasons seem to launch in September, maybe it tied to back to school, end of harvest or shorter days, but whatever the reason, we are kicking off a amazing season and there will be new cool things like a Steam Punk Convention and we are working on more interesting events and festivals. It be very cool to have Jay Leno in Modesto as he is such a classic car and American Graffiti fan. Modesto USA is truly a city of great performers, music, and live entertainment and we are here to help you enjoy it. Check out our center spread to get all the scoop. One of the coolest ways we celebrate local music is the annual Modesto Area Music

Association, “MAMA” Awards. There is no other event like this in our region where so many different genres of music come together to celebrate, perform and hang out. We are ready to go earlier than before and the nominees are ready for your vote. Huge thanks to Middagh Goodwin for taking us to the next level with artist contact and connections. Chris Ricci and I are so proud that this event is still going strong 16 years later. Vote now and we will have more details in our October issue. It is crazy how people have an impression about places that they have not experienced. If you look at a lot of comments that people make about Modesto, downtown Modesto or our community, you can tell be reading that they are just retelling something they heard. Ask someone if they have heard about Prospect Theatre, or the Runnels brothers and happily inform them. It is up to all of us to take our city back and we are counting on your ModestoView reader to be this kind of champion. I can tell, that just because you picked this magazine up or are reading this online, you care about our community. Let’s get people downtown and out and about. We see a lot of the same people at some of the local shows or fundraisers, so I ask you my Modesto area friends to spread the word. Let’s get new faces to an art show, or a play or bring a new guest to a charity event. Get people downtown as foot traffic brings energy, it brings new jobs,

and with an engaged population, we create a city center that makes every neighborhood better in down. A healthy downtown makes a healthy city. Hopefully soon we will have passenger ACE rail downtown, which will lead to housing and more services. This is what cures our ills. Crime and homelessness go down when there is a strong economy with new jobs. We can do this! Celebrate Modesto friends all of the cool things happening. We are going in to a beautiful season with nice breezy evenings, dining al fresco, gatherings with friends and helping people enjoy living here. Check out our local businesses that advertise in and make sure you check them out first. My kid are remodeling their house and they have had excellent help and service from Direct Appliance. We do business with our friends that give back to the community and hope you do too. We all have to work together. I hope you enjoy this fall, it looks like it is going to be a blast. We will be keeping you up to speed on some new restaurants and other cool things starting this month and beyond. The one thing that I love (and occasionally hate) about being a writer is that my mind tends to work constantly, and I can’t help but notice the details in situations that others don’t always catch. I tend to make up stories in my head when I see certain things. Here is an example: Nicole and I were out to lunch the other day and I noticed an elderly couple eating across the restaurant from us. They looked as though they had been together forever. She made sure that he had everything that he needed and he made sure to smile and speak softly to her. This may sound like a typical thing to see, but in my mind I couldn’t help but focus on the man in the scenario. My mind quickly went into overdrive as I imagined what I might write about him if I had the chance. It would likely be something like this: The old man sat there stoically, and his bright eyes glistened every time that he glanced at the woman who sat across the table from him. It was hard not to notice his silver hair that was soft and swept back. I couldn’t help but think that years of riding motorcycles left his hair

permanently swept back. He looked like that kind of guy — rugged and strong. His skin was spotted as any elderly man’s skin would be, but his dark age spots were hard to see because his skin looked to be the texture of old leather. It appeared to be thick and rough like it had been sun-baked over the years. Maybe he was a lumberjack or a fire fighter. Maybe he simply just never bothered to use sunscreen or lotion. But the one thing that struck me most about the old man was his obvious love for the woman that he was with. She had short white hair with curls that framed her face and she was wearing a floral dress. I could imagine her years earlier ignoring the warning and demands of her parents and hopping on the back of the old man’s Harley and heading off

into an unknown future. I am writing this to remind you to look at things. In this day of phones and tablets it is easy to get distracted. Nobody is more guilty of this than I am, but I am getting better at turning off once in a while. I am trying to make more of an effort to focus on who I am with and what is happening away from the screen in front of me. Take the time this month to sit on a bench at a local park or downtown and turn off your device for a while. Enjoy an hour of peoplewatching. Maybe snap a few cool candid photos. Imagine the stories that could be associated with those that you see. Don’t judge a book by its cover. Look deeper. Flip to the center section of this issue to read our guide on upcoming performances in the Modesto area. Performances present excellent people-watching opportunities. We are fortunate to have so much to look forward to. Enjoy your city. Embrace its history. This is a terrific place to liv

ART Oktoberfest by Jim Christiansen

Oktoberfest is around the corner and there are vintage events to enliven the Season. Carnegie Arts Center pops the cork with its annual Gala and opening of the Alphonse MuchaThe Golden Age of Art Nouveau.. The Gala is September 12, show opens September 13. Organized by Landau Traveling Exhibitions, 70 original works featured by the major Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha,, 1890-1910. . Yosemite Renaissance XXX is currently showing at Carnegie through October 4. This Annual competition opened at the Yosemite Museum Gallery in February before traveling to the Kings Art Center in Hanford, then on to Carnegie Arts Center. Its purpose is to cultivate diverse contemporary expressions of Yosemite and the Sierra by today’s artists. Jordi Camps will open his show this month at Wente Family Vineyards in Livermore. Large format art, you can sample Jordi’s art at the winery, or downtown at Picasso’s Gourmet Deli and Gallery. Sue Siefkin will be showing her Art Quilts with six other art quilters at Shenandoah Vineyards starting September 1. Opening will be September 12, 1 to 3 pm, at the winery, 12300 Steiner Rd in Plymouth. I have a trio of watercolors in the tasting room, with artist Joe Lee at Watts/Upstream Wines in Lodi. Collision IV, photography and poetry at Mistlin Gallery was the big event during August Art Walk with plenty of wine, photographers and poets on hand for readings. This unique show, a fusion of photography and poetry collaboration continues this month, and if you miss it, there is a book for sale. A packed house for Art Walk. A Celebration of the Figure at Mistlin, opens September 15 to October 9 – 30 artists. Lori DiMuro is the hosting artist with a show limited to 30 artists. Over at the Chartreuse Muse, Abstract paintings and jewelry by Corey Watson will be carried over until next month, when the artist talk during Art Walk includes Hard Cider tasting. Coming soon, the Muse upstairs studio will become a full service Mud Room for clay and ceramics, with wheels, tables, clay, glazes, and available studio time. This should start October 1st. Later

this fall Nicole Slater and Tammy Jo Schoppet will combine for a show at the Muse. Nicole’s studio is close by at the Artists Loft, above Slater’s Home Furnishings. Preservation Coffee and Tea will have concluded its voting for best of show for its August Art Show August 31. Look for results this month. The Art Gallery at Modesto Junior College, located on the East Campus will feature 8 Artists in a show billed as Post Rural Artists. Opening August 31, the show features the works of Trey Hill, Brad Allen, Noah Wilson, Kevin Bell, Nicole Petrantoni, Edgar Smith, Matt Harmon and James Bailey. Artist Reception will be held September 10 at the MJC gallery, 5:30 to 7:30. Coming up in October is the Carriage Show by Valley Art Association. Entries delivered October 15 for the show run October 17 and 18. That same weekend, I will be in the Wood Colony Community Event, October 17 with artists Andrew Walther and Alice Kinser, at the Walther Ranch, way out Blue Gum. September is also a good month for Harvest festivals, including Bloomingcamp in Oakdale, and the Modesto International Architectural Festival. Meanwhile I’m headed to San Francisco Comedy Day, September 20 in Sharon Meadow in Golden Gate Park. The Event is free, and a lot of fun.

Two of our BrewView reporters were recently in Dublin, Ireland, and visited the Jameson Distillery. Ireland is obsessed with rugby, the way we are obsessed with football. Nearly everywhere you go, you would see rugby on TV. Upon returning, we went on the hunt to capture the essence of that obsession. We loved OutsideLands 2015 If you could sum up the musical performances of 2015 SF Outsidelands in two words, it would be Billy Idol. Billy Idol is the school of rock. If you have a band, want to be in a band, want to perform, you would watch Billy Idol. No lights or effects, just Billy Idol. He is thankful to his audience, he is a bold showman, plays with his music for mood and tailors his set to the local crowd. Every band, no matter whether it is an ambient shoe gazer to an up and coming hip-hopper needs to know these golden rules for performing. Billy Idol is the school. There were incredible music treats at every stage from the newly electric sound of Mumford and Sons, the eclectic energy of St Vincent or even the hilarious Mac Sabbath performing as “Ronald” McDonald with a cast of McCartoon characters on the GastroMagic stage, James Bay lit up Sutro and Lindsay Sterling is beyond charming and talented. Your Sister Can’t Twist (but she can rock and roll). Standout highlights were the fully packed Lindley Meadow Sutro Stage for Milky Chance and the “secret acoustic Milky Chance show at the Toyota Stage. The Twin Peaks stage was packed constantly and it was nearly impossible to even get close for DJ Mustard

and Kendrick Lamar. Sunday morning, Bill Kreutzmann of the Grateful Dead made a surprise appearance Elton John capped of the weekend in total Elton style capping OSL2015 with Crocodile Rock. As we left Outsidelands 2015 Sunday evening, we walked through the 70,000 people and danced to Saturday Night’s Alright for Fightin’ as we head out to our shuttle bus to take us home. CHEF Everybody say “OPA!” 50 Years! Greek Food Festival!

“OPA!” is a Greek word that is heard often in the celebration of life. Most likely, you’ve heard the word at a restaurant (Greek or otherwise) when someone broke a plate - on purpose or unintentionally. Or you’ve heard the word at a wedding or Greek festival when people are dancing. You should put the he underlying meaning of the Greek word “OPA!” into a practical context so that you can use it for your own benefit: to build resilience, foster engagement, manage life transitions, enjoy life to the fullest; in your personal life and in your work. “OPA!” to those benefits being a part of my life! Since 1966 the Greek Food Festival has been introducing Modesto and the surrounding communities to authentic Greek food, entertainment, and a true sense of their celebrated culture. For the past 50 years, including several generations the traditions of the festival have been passed down and kept alive. Anna Petrulakis has been involved in the baking and as a chair person for all 50 years. Anna recalled having her small children in playpens while she and 50+ others who gathered to bake the desserts including; Baklava, Koulourakia, and Paximadia which are two kinds of Greek biscotti. Anna also introduced me to her granddaughter, Eleni, who proudly showed me her handmade apron she wears while helping in the church kitchen, and who also attends Our Lady of Fatima. I could truly feel the sense of a community come together as these desserts were being handmade for the 8,000 guests who will attend the 2 day event. The Baklava smelled divine with aromas wafting through the air of butter, honey, cinnamon, lemons, walnuts, and sweet sugar. 500 lbs of Baklava, that’s 100 pans, 160 pieces on each, totaling 16,000 decadent bites! Included in the ticket price is an authentic Greek dinner; Greek salad, Greek style chicken, made by head chef Paul Forakis, Greek pilaf, Greek veggies, made by Nick Malekos, son of Tony Forakis. Yes, these men all learned the trade of Greek cuisine from their fathers. During the festival there is also so much to do and see like folk dancing (that some children start learning from as young as age 4). You can

Festival on Architecture Designed to Inspire by Barrett Lipomi The nationally acclaimed 8th Annual Modesto Architecture Festival is kicking off this month in downtown Modesto! From September 12 to the 20th, the festival features tours, exhibits, films, and workshops celebrating architecture and design. Programs during the festival are designed to inspire and share the fascinating world of architecture with the community. Guided downtown walking tours will uncover the amazing history of Modesto’s mid-century architecture. Films featuring the world’s leading architects and designers will inspire and captivate. Architectural crafts and games will engage children of all ages. Co-hosted by the Modesto Art Museum and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Sierra Valley, the Modesto Architecture Festival is one the longest running and largest festivals of its kind in the world. The festival highlights and celebrates architecture and design around the world in addition to the

great buildings and neighborhoods in Modesto. Earlier this year, the Modesto Architecture Festival was presented the prestigious National Excellence Award by the American Institute of Architects. Best of all the entire festival, including architecture film night, is free and open to the public. INTERVIEW Sheriff Adam Christiansen by Chris Murphy I first met Sheriff Adam Christiansen soon after he joined the Sheriff ’s department in 1996. We connected as we both share a vision to make our community a better place to live. Sheriff Christianson has certification in Paramedicine and worked as a paramedic in Stanislaus County for several years including work as a flight paramedic for Medi-Flight, He started his law enforcement career with the Ceres Police Department and also worked for the Modesto Police Department before joining the Sheriff ’s Department in 1996. Sheriff Christiansen is married with two kids and they are an important part of our community. One of the keys to vibrant community is a safe community and the sheer size of Stanislaus County is a challenge to be everywhere all the time. Smart regional management has been a hallmark of Sheriff Adam Christiansen’s department. Regional experts that protect and serve make our area a place that is safe for business and families. Managing scarce financial resources has been a primary concert for the Sheriff over the last decade and with the recent economic upturn, additional resources have become available to accomplish key goals. Sheriff Christiansen is committed to building new Public Safety Facilities including a Day Reporting Center and a Coroner’s Facility. Those projects, including 552 new beds, a 72 bed medical/mental health care unit and 288 bed REACT/Re-entry facility will take beyond 2019 to accomplish. The Sheriff ’s office is hiring again and the Regular Basic POST Academy Course is back up and running at the Sheriff ’s Regional Training Center. A well-trained and dedicated team is one of the key priorities for Sheriff Christianson. ModestoView: What makes you most proud of being Sheriff of Stanislaus County? Sheriff Christiansen: Our team of dedicated, hard working men and women who do a great job everyday, protecting our communities. I’m most proud of them. They are truly our greatest asset. MV: What is the biggest challenge facing your department right now? SC: Finding well qualified, well educated men and women to hire. The Board of Supervisors is overwhelmingly supportive of Public Safety Restoration, a three year plan to restore levels of service and staffing we were forced to cut because of the economic recession.

Our hiring and training standards are very high for the singular reason of protecting the public’s trust and confidence in us. We hire those who understand how important our guiding principles of honesty, integrity, professionalism and respect are and those who are able to abide by the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics. MV: Where did you grow up and what made you want to pursue a career in law enforcement. SC: I was born in California but raised in Northwest Montana. I found my way back to Turlock where my grandparents lived. I finished my education and paramedic training while working for Turlock Ambulance. After several years working as a paramedic, including work as a flight paramedic with Medi-Flight of Northern California, I graduated from the Police Academy at Modesto Jr. College. Public safety is my passion and serving in law enforcement was an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up. MV: What are the top three things you want to accomplish in the next year for public safety? SC: Completion of 150 million dollars in public safety facility construction. We just dedicated a Day Reporting Center in partnership with the County, the Probation Department, communitybased organizations and the State of California. This facility provides educational, vocational and rehabilitative space for out of custody programs that focus on supervision and treatment. Our goal is to break cycles of addiction and violence while providing opportunities for criminal offenders to leave behind a self destructive lifestyle. We’re currently constructing 552 new jail beds at the Public Safety Center on the Hackett Road Campus which includes a 72 bed medical mental health care unit. A new state-of-the-art Coroner’s Facility will be complete in October

of this year and we’ve implemented a three year public safety restoration plan of which we’re in year one. The Peace Officer Standards and Training Regular Basic Course (AKA: Police Academy) is back up and running at the Ray Simon Regional Criminal Justice Training Center allowing us to once again train our peace officers locally. There’s so many exciting things happening that I wanted to share more than “three things”. MV: What does the community have to do to attack the meth problem? SC: Addiction is an epidemic. We need to double our efforts, in partnership with the community, keeping young people focused on education and success as opposed to a life of gangs and methamphetamine. Early intervention, prevention and education are all critical keys to our success. Children need good role models and mentors at home, teaching them how to be productive, law abiding, respectful members of our community. MV: Is there any particular issue that is unique to our area that we need to wrap our heads around? SC: Quality of life issues are something we can all work on together. Stanislaus County is a great place to live, work and play but the ravages of addiction, mental illness and homelessness are community issues that will take a commitment from everyone in order to make a difference. There are precious little resources and funding to address the challenges of proper care for those who suffer from mental illness. We need to all rally together and support Stanislaus County’s “Focus on Prevention” initiative and our mental health care professionals. MV: How does the size of our country make it challenging for law enforcement? SC: Stanislaus County is 1521 square miles of urban and rural space with a very large agricultural footprint. Response times

to very rural parts of Stanislaus County can be extended at times. We meet the challenge by strategically deploying our resources to areas that are most affected by crime. Technology, social media, information sharing and neighborhood watch are all very useful tools in helping us bridge the gaps. As we continue to hire more deputy sheriffs and restore levels of service and staffing, our visible presence will increase County-wide. MV: I know that there are many people who want to lend a hand, how can a regular person get involved? SC: Volunteer! Our STARS program provides an excellent opportunity to give something back to your community. We also strongly encourage everyone to look out for one another. Crime prevention and neighborhood watch is something we can all do together to make our communities safer. MV: Describe something about yourself that people might not know. SC: Fly fishing is very therapeutic! I love fly fishing in Montana. MV: If you had all the resources you needed, what would you do differently? SC: At the moment we’re doing our very best to provide a good quality level of service with the resources we have but if we were fully staffed, we would restore all of the programs we were forced to cut. Community deputies, School Resource Officers, Task Force Operations, and many other very valuable community services. The best news, our STING Team (Sheriff ’s Team Investigating Narcotics and Gangs) is back! Very exciting opportunity to once again have a positive impact in gang enforcement, suppression and prevention. MV: Describe your ideal day here in the Modesto area? SC: Going to work! Meeting with the community, building relationships in the community that focus on mutual benefit, trust and respect all while interacting with the greatest team ever at the Sheriff ’s Office, our employees. MV: First, can you briefly tell us a little about DRAIL? How long has the organization been serving our area? What are your primary services?

SG: Thank you for this opportunity to share with your readers about DRAIL and our upcoming event. DRAIL has been in operation as a 501(c)3 since 1986. DRAIL’s mission is to empower persons with disabilities to achieve greater independence through our services. DRAIL is one of 29 Centers for Independent Living throughout the state, and we cover 6 counties including Stanislaus, San Joaquin, Amador, Calaveras, Tuolumne and Mariposa. Our core services consist of Information and Referral, Peer Counseling, Advocacy, and Independent Living Skill training. In addition we also offer Assistive Technology, Benefits advising and the Social Security Work Incentives Planning and Assistance program. All of our services are geared toward helping those with disabilities achieve goals of greater independence while maintaining choice and control in their daily life. The only eligibility requirements DRAIL has to become a consumer and receive services is you must be a person with a disability and are able to utilize our services.

MV: We look forward to attending your event on Sept. 25. Tell us about the event. Why would it be important for someone to attend? SG: This event is really unique for our area. There are larger events that are in the Bay Area or Southern California, but it’s very difficult for people from our region to travel to these events. This is an opportunity for not only people who have disabilities, but those who care and work with them to experience resources all in one place. The event highlights the vast range of devices and adaptive technology from durable medical equipment we are all generally aware of like walkers and wheelchairs to cutting edge technology that can enable a person to increase their independence through smart devices and computer accessories. One of the most repeated comments we hear from people who connect with us for services is “We didn’t know about you until now”. This is also a way to let more people become aware of DRAIL’s services and the other agencies we work closely with. I encourage anyone who has an interest in what Assistive Technology is or what it can do to enhance a persons independence to come out to the Abilities Resource Fair and Assistive Technology Expo Friday September 25th from 9a-2p at 1424 Stonum Road at

Performing Arts Season by Chris Murphy

September used to be “back to school”. The Tuesday after Labor Day was dedicated to the classroom. Now, the kids are back to school in August and Labor Day is just an extended weekend as we transition into “Performing Arts Season”. There are so many great events that are happening at the Gallo Center, the Turlock Community Theatre, the West Side Theatre, The Center Stage Conservatory, Prospect Theatre Project and stages from Stockton all the way down to Merced. Don’t forget our school drama programs as our next generation of talented kids practice and rehearse for their fall presentations at local schools and through the YES Company. This is really a fun time to enjoy events on the big stage, from local Rolling Stone tribute shows at the State Theatre to cool jams at the Barkin’ Dog, there is literally something for everyone and even up in the hills with the Sierra Repertory Theatre and Stage 3 in Sonora. There is something really special about a live stage performance. There is nothing like it, the energy, the sound, the risk of a mistake, and the interaction between the performer and the audience is magic. If you are at a restaurant that features live music, there is an energy in the air that makes the evening special. You can request a song, cheer for a performer, or you can stand up and shout in appreciation. But best of all, you can dance the night away. Live music and entertainment is life, it is energy, and it can be the soul of a city. We are loaded with great things going down this fall. Here is our call to action: Get tickets. Go out. Attend a show. Buy a CD. Get a T-shirt from a local band and most importantly, if you are going out, invite some friends and turn them on to something new.

Can you believe we have been celebrating the best of the Modesto Area music since 2000? MAMA turns sweet 16 this year! Musical talent is all over the greater Modesto area. It is particularly amazing how many different kinds of music we have to choose from. The MAMAs celebrate the bands, singers, songwriters, events restaurants, cafes and bars that book our local bands and host live music. There is truly something special about seeing live music performed, whether it is originals or your favorite covers. Our local MAMA winners have achieved national / global fame, have been featured on TV programs, recognized by other organizations and their celebrations encourage them to go on to make even greater music and MAMA winners are a source of Modesto pride. Music makes our community special. More important than who takes home an award, the MAMAs are a great way for Modesto to showcase the asset that that music is to our community. Rockabilly Music, the back beat of Rock and Roll was created in Modesto in 1938 with the slappin’ bass sound of the Maddox Brothers and Rose. In 2015, we will be honoring the Ratz, one of Modesto’s premier 60s rock bands that was the springboard for bands like Quicksilver Messenger Service. How time flies when you are having fun. It is MAMA time again, X-Fest is over and voting has started for the Modesto Area Music Awards. There are 23 Categories, including Latin (new this year) and Punk and Reggae which were added last year. I am sure you have all been flooded by requests to vote from many of your friend’s bands (remember to look through all the nominees, because you can only vote once and you do not want to miss a friend or family member who has been nominated.) Team MAMA put in the hours to narrow down the nominees and I hope you will make it a point to go out and catch as many as you can at one or more of the great area Venues/Restaurants and Cafés that host Live Entertainment. You can always catch the heavier bands playing on Yosemite Street at The Other Place, Spinnakers or Yosemite Lanes. Catch Jazz and Blues acts downtown at the Barkin’ Dog or up in Stockton at Mile Wine. Grizzly Rock in Turlock does a little bit of everything and has some Alt Rock shows coming up in September. Looking for some good punk/rockabilly or metal shows check out Rebels Whiskeyhouse in Stockton. Café Deva and Queen Bean both are home to Alt/Indie and Americana. Café Deva will be hosting the Second Annual Brew MAMA celebrating the nominated Comedians on Oct 3rd. Head out to Oakdale or up to Jamestown, because the Cow Track and Gypsy Shack are both great places to catch live music. Ceres is home to the Workshop and has been hosting Metal and Hardcore shows for years. The Partisan in Merced is one of the gems of the area and RC is great to all the bands and patrons alike. You can catch many young talents and seasoned players working on new material or old favorites at any of the areas Open Mics. BLUES by Earl Matthews Hello friends and blues lovers! Summer is winding down and its time for the harvest. I have been scouring the web looking to see what is in store for us in September for local blues fans. First off, every Thursday at the Garlic Brothers in Stockton Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood hosts a blues jam. This is a type of open mic where musicians come together and play off the cuff. This is a great place to come for fun and an excellent place for musicians to network and meet new folks to play with. I myself met 2 of the guys with whom I started the Cryin’ Shame at a jam that Jeramy hosted many years ago. On the 5th Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood will be playing a free show at Barkin’ Dog. Jeramy is a veteran blues man with a whole bunch of talent and a crazy tight 3-piece band that can turn on a dime and will keep you engaged and dancing all night long. On the 17th Rob Hill Band will be at Deva Cafe. Rob and the boys are really on fire these days. Their sound mixes up Jazz, Blues and Soul music with heartfelt vocals and dynamic music for a finished product unlike anything

else you can find in the valley. Rob Hill Band is one of the bands to watch in our area and I do every chance I get. On the 19th Big Earl and the Crying shame will be out at the Hughson Harvest. We will be there all afternoon playing on the main stage. This event is free and all ages so bring the whole family. On Sunday the 20th Ron Tompson and the Resistors will be playing the blues in the Vineyard out in Lodi at Mettler Family Winery. Ron is a boogie guitar player who used to play for John Lee Hooker. Ron is considered to be one of the best guitar players in the bay area and has played with everyone in the blues world during his long career. Ron’s talent mixed with this beautiful location is a sure fire way to a good time. Then on the 22nd George Thorogood and the Destroyers along with Tommy Castro and the Painkillers will be at Bob Hope Theater in Stockton. What can I even say about this one except that it will be one for the books. Two great bands, a whole lot of great songs, and

some bands that will no doubt go down in the history books as some of the best. Plus the Bob Hope is a great medium size theater, not a bad seat in the house, honestly. On the evening of the 25th, we will be out at Central Catholic High school playing at their annual fundraiser carnival. It should be a lot of fun and it helps to raise funds for scholarships. There are shows going on in the 209 every day of the year. Go out and check out some of the great talent that is all around you. Support the people who make your area a great place to live and play. By the time this story runs the MAMA voting will have begun so make sure to vote for your favorite bands and have a great September.

I had gone to the Haggin Museum in Stockton to see the landscape paintings of 19th Century artist, Albert Bierstadt. His luminous canvases captured Yosemite, the Delta, and the Central Valley. One of the docents was an elderly Japanese-American man. He didn’t seem to want to be bothered by my questions. I decided to show myself around. He caught up with me later in the basement, where they had recreated old Stockton. He gave me three origami birds – one each of red, white, and blue. Someday, he’ll stop apologizing for the sins of his ancestral homeland.

ALL AGES Momoka by Leia Johnson Over the summer I was fortunate enough to go to Kurume, Japan and stay with a wonderful girl named Momoka. The exchange was reciprocated, so the Modesto students had the privilege of showing Momo and the other Japanese students around California. The Japanese students went to Sacramento and San Francisco, I also took Momoka to Colombia and Santa Cruz. In Japan we were treated like royalty, I am so happy to hear that the Japanese students felt the same in Modesto. I interviewed Momoka to try and see Modesto from her perspective. Q: What do you think people in Modesto should appreciate more about our city? A: I think people should go to the flower clock and fountains (by the Double Tree Hotel). I like the area because it is green and has pretty water. I think the flower clock matches the “Water Wealth Contentment Health” Arch. Q: Where is your favorite place in Modesto? A: Other than the flower clock, it is the statue outside of the retirement home. I also like the McHenry Museum because it has a lot of interesting history. Q: Do you like the people in Modesto? A: Yes! They are very nice and treat me well. Q: Where is your favorite place in California that you visited?

One good place to test my patience is in traffic. The car in front of me is going too slow and makes me miss the green light. If I’m late it’s going to be that car’s fault! Speeding up to the next intersection I hope I can make up for lost time. But to no avail, I’m seeing the light turning yellow and that slow car is going just at the right speed to comfortably catch the next green light! It is in those moments that I’m aware that I’ve lost my cool. Why is it hard to be patient? In today’s world everything is happening so fast. Our iPhones and iPads can give us instant answers and instant gratification. We come to expect that getting somewhere, improvement or success should come to us faster too. Yet the more we hurry and push the more we seem to

This process may take you to unknown places and dissolve previous limitations. A Chinese proverb says : “Inspiration comes from patience and perspiration”. There is something about doing something over and over again that is very rewarding. Yes, it may make you sweat, be hard and take you beyond your limit. Find places to learn patience. It’s worth it. FIT A, B, C, or Maybe D? by Efren Martinez The rules are still the same but the definitions in group cycling speed categories seem to have jumped to warp speed. If you’re a cyclist then you’re familiar with the different group ride divisions; A, B, C & D. “A” division would be for the fastest pace group rides and “D” group rides would be a much slower pace. Let me scoot back a bit, a few years ago when I started group rides, “A” group rides were for cyclists able to hold speeds between 17-19mph and if you hit a speed of 25+mph it would be something to celebrate. Since then, many of our local riders have gotten amazingly fast. Today it’s not unusual for an “A” group ride to hold speeds that range between 21-25mph and if you are riding on the flats with the “A” group, you better have had your breakfast of champions because your paceline can roll as fast as 26+mph. Please don’t let this discourage you if you’re thinking of getting into the sport of cycling. Mile per mile, bicycling will give you some of the kindest benefits to your body with little to

no impact on your joints. Just recently, I met up with the store manager at The Oakdale Bicycle Shop, Ed Battisfore, to help me explain the different categories and cycling lingo so that you may best choose any one of the group rides that are being offered by his bike shop and/or The Stanislaus County Bicycle Club. D Beginner Ride: A ride designed with very short routes, usually uses short loops for a route that can be shortened and lengthened as needed. Beginner ride speeds tend to be determined entirely by the abilities of the slowest rider. Beginner rides should teach the proper etiquette to those interested in joining group rides. C: Indicates a ride no shorter than 20 miles with no more than 1000 feet of elevation gain. An average speed for a “C” level ride is 15 mph. This is including stops and breaks. “C” level rides can be “drop” or “no-drop” rides. B: Indicates a ride no shorter than 20 miles with no more than 3000 feet of elevation gain. An average speed for a “B” level

ride is 17 mph. This is including all stops and breaks. “B” Level rides can be “drop” or “nodrop” rides. A: Indicates a ride no shorter than 20 miles with no limit on elevation gain. An average speed for an “A” level ride is 20 mph. This is including all stops and breaks. “A” Level rides can be “drop” or “no-drop” rides. Drop Ride: This means that at any point in the ride, if you break apart from the group, you are on your own. The group will not be stopping and re-grouping at any point throughout the ride. No-Drop Ride: Not to be confused with “Social”! This indicates that periodically there will be re-groups where the riders will wait for those who have fallen behind. Once the last

rider has shown up the group moves on. If the rider at the tail is keeping the group from achieving their posted level of speed (A, B, C, etc.), it is possible for the ride leader to excuse the individual from the ride. It is the rider’s responsibility to ride according to the posted level. I met a lot of people through out my career and I’m proud to say I feel like I have the team behind me to take it to that next level. The city of Modesto where I grew up is far from the cities I’ve been blessed to travel to through my music. I feel like I need to get out and disappear for awhile to get out of Modesto and explore, not many people are blessed to travel so I always try to bring a few friends along to enjoy it with me. Let’s just say “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas”. But all jokes aside i have to remember it’s all because of the music. Nobody can ever stop me and my team because no matter what I’m going to continue making quality music for everyone. Regardless if you hear my music on the first night I just hope eventually people get curious and look my name up on YouTube or sound cloud etc. I feel like a lot of people are making music now because they see first hand its possible. I just hope they understand its not all fun and games like they think it is. This business gets rough and sometimes I don’t think I can do it anymore but i always look back and remember everything i gave up for it so i cant. i would say me and music got a love hate relationship. Since I was last interviewed, I dropped one project titled “Dear Dom”. I’ve been to Santa Cruz, Vegas, Reno, Bakersfield, Fresno, Sacramento and San Bernardino in the last few months. I’ve grown a lot with my music and putting my

emotions into it. I put everything I go through in my life into the music. So if I’m mad in my songs, I’m probably mad at some during that part of my life or if all my music is happy and jolly, I may be doing good. It’s weird now most of my fans are dudes and before it was more girls, I’m not tripping, I’m just glad they care. I attend a acting classes a few times a week. I feel like I can do anything I put my mind to, so why not? I relate most my acting skits to my verses because I have to memorize them and perform them. It’s basically like me performing at shows just in front of a movie set or a classroom of students. I like it a lot because it’s different from music but also creative. Right now, I’m working on my new album “Dominic”. I want to title my next album after my first name because I want people to know me for Dominic not this “Domz” they see online or hear all this stuff about. I’ve been digging a lot deeper with this music. This past year was probably the hardest of my life and I grew from it. Everyone that really pays attention to my music tells me they can hear the growth in my music. I’m going to drop this next project straight to iTunes and see what the fanbase does. I don’t think I will have a release date; I might just drop it. I have most of it done and I’m just waiting for the right time. It’s all strategy in the game. Thurs & Sats 7am-1pm Kaiser Medical Center, Modesto Perfect location for people who want to take out two birds with one stone: Grab your week’s produce at the same time as your doctor’s appointment, or picking up a prescription. 4601 Dale Road, Thurs 8am-2pm (year-round) Turlock- This is their first season on Saturdays! Aside from the usual fruits & veggies, they are known for their cupcakes, shaved ice, and beef jerky. You can also find soaps, crafts, honey & lavender here. Center & Main St. Sats, 8am-1pm Oakdale- A night option for our busy schedules, and this year brings a twist! Local produce on one side, car show on the other! Bring your blanket, buy your dinner for your picnic basket, and let the kiddos play while you listen to live music. The third Wednesday of the month will also include wine tasting for those 21 and over. North 3rd Avenue & Bianchi Plaza, Weds 5pm-8pm Riverbank – The City of Action offers another evening adventure option for those seeking cooler temperatures or who have to work during the day. Power of the Purse Luncheon Sept 23 - 11 am Gallo Center

Don’t miss this important fundraising and motivational event. Last year, they raised over $44,000 to expand the Graduation Coach program, a student engagement program aimed keeping at-risk middle school students in school and on the path to graduation and provided Christmas gifts for Pathways, a transitional housing service for homeless and former foster youth and other grants during the year. This year’s speaker is Susan Mazza is a business coach and motivational speaker who works with leaders and their teams to transform their performance, relationships and work environment from acceptable to exceptional.
