Project Finals had me thinking about how many talented people there are here in Modesto USA. As the cool breeze followed me to my car for my 5-minute drive home, it had me thinking how nice it is to be in this geographic place where we get the delta breezes that refresh our city daily. It was flat out chilly this morning when I picked up my morning newspapers and I knew today was going to be a good day. I love this time of year and it makes me happy thinking about the amazing friends and family we have. This is truly a wonderful community. This month is flat out packed with things to do. I know what you are thinking, “Chris, you say this every month”. You are right, I do, and every month I mean it. You can’t say you are bored and live in this town. Between all of the Pokemon Go players exploring all over town to the incredible new line up at the Gallo Center, the cool indie films at the State, the all ages music at our local venues, museums like the Great Valley Museum, the McHenry Museum and Mansion there is truly something for everyone. This month we are getting our fashion and our architecture on. The week of Sept 11 will see the intersection and collision of our design community. Let’s embrace this friends, go out and take the walking tours, dress up and enjoy being all about town. There are cool films, exhibits, tours and parties and even a couture fashion show. This is just a flat out fun way to celebrate the creativity in our community. ModestoView is there supporting both Modesto Fashion Week and Modesto Architecture

Festival. It is wonderful how our community supports our area charities in really creative ways. First off we have the amazing culinary festival that is the Edible Extravaganza that benefits the Center for Human Services, we have the Community Brunch that brings our community together for a tasty event that benefits Salvation Army, Stan Education Foundation, Society for Disabilities, the Police Action League on Sept 11. There is a Walk for Alzheimer’s on Sept 10 and the Power of the Purse on Sept 14 and Unspoken fall benefit for the Modesto Gospel Mission on the 29th, just to name a few. We really have a giving and creative community. It is MAMA season. Since 2000, we have been celebrating our annual Modesto Area Music talent at the MAMA Awards on Oct 11. Nominations are now in, voting is live and I challenge each and every one of you to take time, check these bands out, go see them play in our local venues and make live music a priority in

our community. The cool thing is about Valley Talent Project is we always find new musicians in our community that may not be on the regular local venue scene and I love those discoveries. Friends, go listen to our local bands, it will fill your soul with goodness. And finally, doing local business is what we are all about. Our family is in the process of moving and remodeling (always sounds more fun than it is) and of course we went to Direct Appliance for my needs. Great ideas, products and design. This is one of the ways we make Modesto better, stronger and more vibrant is by keeping our dollars local. Please take time to support the awesome businesses that are showcased here in ModestoView. They care about our community and we should reward those companies that give back to our local charities and to Modesto. by Maryann Spikes Would you leave a woman stranded on the street with her groceries due to a bulky item policy? Ever kick anyone who loiters in front of your store? Have you displaced families from the safety of their tent community? Maybe there are better ways to engage people experiencing homelessness. Note the missing question mark. Another way of saying, “necessity is the mother of invention” is that “discomfort is the motivator of change”. It was discomfort that motivated my friend, Scott, to provide a hotel room for his dying friend, David, during the last days of David’s life. Scott didn’t want his best friend dying on the streets. Further discomfort led Scott to get off the streets in June and graduate (I’m very proud to say) at the Stanislaus Recovery Center in August. A related discomfort motivated Stanislaus County to initiate our Focus on Prevention of Homelessness meetings this past year. During this year, Dean Dodd’s “dream team” built and successfully launched Cleansing Hope Shower Shuttle. I was honored to attend the August 3 ribbon cutting ceremony where the team received recognition from Congressman Jeff Denham, Assemblymember Kristin Olsen, Senator Anthony Canella, Supervisor Dick Monteith, and Mayor Ted Brandvold. During their second week in operation, I was

We know change does not happen overnight – it happens at the speed of trust. That’s why the County’s Focus on Prevention prioritizes relationships and engagement. The next Homelessness Action Council (HAC) gathering is scheduled for September 15 from 2:30pm to 4:30pm at the Ceres Community Center on 2701 Fourth Street. The update includes information on the Community System of Care planning workgroups (see the flowchart in the online version of this article). The coordinator of those workgroups is Jeanette Fabella (fabelaj@stancounty.com), the new Housing and Supportive Services Manager for Stanislaus County. One of the workgroups is the multi-sector Volunteer Engagement Team, which will have an orientation session on September 7th: http:// focus-engagement.eventbrite.com Other workgroups include aligning the faith sector, educating the public on resources for those experiencing homelessness (through

211, etc.), and engaging people experiencing homelessness in neighborhoods. New Art Class schedules for Chartreuse Muse, Mistlin Gallery and City Parks. A lot to cover. Suggestion for a new mural viewing path. The alley way between McHenry and Elmwood, up from Alice to just past Stoddard, you see the walls done up in Graffiti Art panels. Multiple artists, colorful and bit of a surprise. More and more you’re seeing murals of all sorts appearing. Beautiful new Modesto, California mural at 8th and H, by FASM and a group of 14 graffiti artists from all over as one of four projects. Art Walk map is new this month for the next six-month run. Third Thursday falls midmonth on September 15th. Jeff Haines art will be featured over at Carolyn Huff Gallery. Mistlin Gallery will feature its new members juried show and Autumn Art Festival. Show hangs in the gallery September 6, and Opens with a Gala Art Reception Fundraiser September 9. There were over 200 entries when I put mine in, and only 80 spots to hang. Gala is the primary Central California Art Association Fundraiser for the year. Tickets $30, includes drinks, silent auction and fun. Modesto Artist Salon will have its first public group show at Queen Bean, September 17. This is a great and growing group of networking local artists. Check them out. Something Dark Our friends at DoGood Distillery are Nestled in the gorgeous woods of Tuolumne County in the city of Sonora, is a barn surrounded by several groves of apple trees. Those groves were purchased by Jay Watson back when Indigeny Reserve was just an idea. At first, he sold the apples straight from the tree, and soon decided to tap into the cider market with an amazing cider recipe. The name “Indigeny” comes from combining the words “indigenous” and “synergy”. Watson and his employees, have thrown themselves into reducing, reusing, recycling and re-purposing as much as they possibly can. They bottle in aluminum cans because aluminum is easy to recycle, and doesn’t make a mess if one is dropped on the floor like glass does. They currently offer several flavors of cider, Crisp Apple, Harvest Blend and Blackberry. They have also mastered the art of distilling, and you try and buy their apple Brandy at the tasting room, too! They also recently partnered with Traina Foods in Patterson, and launched Porch Light vodka. The madefrom-grapes vodka is infused for 12 weeks with various dried fruits or veggies. We tried the Strawberry, Apricot, Fig and Tomato. By far, the fig was the best, tasting like a port wine. This would be delicious over ice cream! We enjoyed the sun-dried tomato vodka in a delicious bloody mary, and I think it would be good in salsa, too! Blackberry, black licorice, lemon and lime flavors are coming out soon. Now a national brand, their barn (aka tasting room complete with gift shop) is an attraction for locals and tourists alike, with picnic tables, outside games, ample parking, tons of shade provided by super old trees, and lush apple groves & grape vines as far as the eye can see. Chris Hull is a great tastemaker and will reach for the stars in creating a drink you love. Here is what they created: Cocktail is called “Something, Something, Dark side”. This spirit driven, hybridized Manhattan is served old fashioned style so you get the maximum aroma and taste. Here is how it goes. 1oz Do Good Nighthawk Bourbon wWhiskey 1oz Do Good 3 mile rum 1oz Jagermeister 2 soild dashes Aztec chocolate bitters Fresh ruby red grapefruit peel All ingredients combined and stirred vigorously stirred over ice. PERFORMANCE A Time to Perform in September School is back in the swing of things. College

students are gearing up too! Fall is approaching, I hope you have your tickets for the most amazing community event- Picnic at the Pops The Music of Michael Jackson on September 10th at E & J Gallo Winery grounds. A concerned mother (Traci Sprague) arrives at a parent teacher conference wanting answers to why her 5th grade son was suspended from school. There the discussion between the mother and the teacher (Carin Heidelbach) becomes dramatically charged, volatile exploration of personal responsibility,freedom of expression, the failure of our school system, bullying and blame.

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore!!! When the world seems to shine like you’ve had too much wine, that’s amore!!! Yes Mo Viewers, it looks like I’m in love… it all started at Luigi’s Pizza on a warm summer night, when that moon was big and bright, oh wait that’s my favorite song of all time; Dancing in the Moonlight by King Harvest! But it really was a supernatural delight; I could get it almost every night, as it is a fine and natural sight that could be most enjoyed dancing in the moonlight! Nothing quite like the beginning of a new relationship! Yes, I have fallen for the Smack’in Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza at Luigi’s! But I’m afraid I’ll become a two-timing cheater as the Garlic Cheesy Stuffed Bread Balls dipped in marinara are irresistible and quite addicting! So, to all you stingy MoViewers who are already regulars at Luigi’s and neglected to mention this to me, you are all in trouble with me! I love great pizza! I often make it at home because, well, mine is the best! But after my dining experience there I will likely buy it more now that I found this local gem thanks to my loyal friends, like Dana Walters of Daydreams and Nightmares and Colleen Winter of Direct Appliance, who are generous enough to share it on Facebook! So when I first spied the photos of these beautiful pies, I thought perhaps it was just advertising photos, they can’t look that good every time, but they do! It was fascinating to me that they actually hand roll the dough right there for you to see behind the glass window! The crusts edge looks like one you’d see on a specialty baker’s fancy fruit pie. As I was watching, we talked about the technique; twist, I am a part of a program called the Modestuck, and fold! Ryan Russell was a man of many virtues. Among them was loyalty, spiritual humbleness, and freely bestowing friendship. Across the country people are lamenting the loss they feel for a person described as a gentle soul and poet of the common man, whose songs injected emotion and transcended Country, Folk, Rock and the Blues. Russell experienced acute bouts of chronic asthma throughout his life including one in the early part of summer 2016 which required a visit to the emergency room. After a rousing show at the Water Wheel Saloon in Sonora with his band mates “Tractor Boy” Chris Ward and John Montes on July 30, in the early morning hours of Sunday at his home, he suffered a severe asthma attack. The episode resulted in acute respiratory arrest brought on by severe asthma exacerbation. On August 1, surrounded by his wife of ten months, Tara, and close family and friends, Ryan Russell, 44, was declared deceased at Doctor’s Medical Center. Continuing his caring nature, even after his passing, he nurtured others through his gift of organ donation. At least five families have had their loved ones returned from the brink of death because of his consideration for others. Tributes quickly poured in from around the music community and beyond expressing condolences and remembrances including KAT Country 103 and Off Farm Income Podcast. Russell had an acting role in “Dive”, the pilot episode of a television series about friendship, addiction and life in a small town, shot last Fall in Tuolumne County and his single, “Born

To Lose” will be included in the upcoming soundtrack. Writer and Director Matthew Lopes and Producer David McAbee are including a dedication to Russell. Ryan Crawford Russell was born and raised on the outskirts of Oakdale, California where he attended local schools. Early on, music became an important interest and Russell began singing in his church choir. A diverse mixture of Classic Rock, Blues, Folk and Country and Western music shaped what would later become his Americana signature style of songwriting. A self-taught guitarist, starting at 23 years of age and influenced in his early years by Jimi Hendricks, Hank Williams, Neil Young, Lightening Hopkins, Bob Dylan and Jack White, he began his journey in songwriting, known for his focus and fastidious work ethic. Because of his professionalism, reliability and thoughtful consideration to detail, he became a soughtafter artist and opened National shows in every noteworthy venue in the Modesto community music scene. He was nominated three consecutive years for a Modesto Area Music Award in the Americana and Singer Songwriter categories. Touring became a tremendous experience and getting to spread his California regional sound across the nation fulfilled a dream, taking him to Arizona, Colorado, Texas, Mississippi and Minnesota. The goal

to move to Austin, Texas before the Fall was going to be the next step for him, Tara and her son as they would join her son’s Father there. Then, Russell would become a member of the spectacular Austin music scene and record his next album in his new hometown. Russell was a champion for his fellow songwriters without lines drawn for genre, and was respected in return. As his friend and drummer Chris Ward stated, “Ryan Russell was a man with more talent, love and creativity in just his little finger than most people’s whole body. It was always such a great experience playing with Ryan, he took me places I’d maybe never get to play, from a radio station up North, across to the Clarksdale, Mississippi Crossroads. Definitely the most humble guy to tour with. Every time we’d perform I would stare at him, not to keep my time, but to watch him play. His flawless performance at our last show is one I will never forget.” He is survived by his wife Tara, step-son Ryan Shepherd, parents Mike and Denise Russell, brothers Dan Russell, Randy Russell and his wife Amanda of The RandyMandy Band and niece Kimberly Russell, along with countless numbers of extended family and friends. We have lost one of the strongest and most beautiful threads in the tapestry that runs throughout the music scene in our region. Several efforts to keep the legacy thriving are being created. An event officially sanctioned by the estate will be hosted by the Knights Ferry General Store, Saloon and Grill on Sunday, September 11 as a musical testament to Ryan featuring Singer Songwriters handpicked for their personal kinship and loyalty, and a deep understanding of his music , all proceeds, including new merchandise will benefit Ryan Russell Music and the rerelease of his CD, The Lonesome Traveler. The Ryan Russell Music Songwriters Foundation, a non-profit organization, is in development by Tara Russell with a deep focus on songwriting to serve the youth in the area providing songwriting Mentors and clinics and a partnership with Gottschalk’s Music and Ray’s Workshop-Music School to bestow financial help for instrument rental and lessons. Evan specializes in the trumpet, and Marie plays just about every orchestra instrument there is, as well as conducting. They

are both super hard-working performers, and their 4 kids are also following in the classical traditions. But they have also seen far more than their share of hardships during their time here. So we’re having a special Music At The GMC event to benefit them on Sunday afternoon 9/18, starting at 2 PM at the recital hall at Gottschalk. We’ll hear numbers by a couple different small symphony sections that Marie is overseeing; a selection of flute pieces by Myra Ramirez, a recent winner of the Anthony Paul Forakis Scholarship; and a set by cello/piano duo Strings Attached, performing classical, jazz and pop with a digital edge. Strings Attached

will be joined by guest vocalist Rebecca Leah Dias, singing jazz standards and more. Rebecca is very active in the local jazz scene, performing often in the Modesto, Oakdale and Sonora areas. We may see a few other special guests as well. Art and wine will also work their way into the day’s festivities. There’s a suggested donation of $20, going entirely to help this beautiful musical family. For introducing me to the Maxfields, I shall forever be grateful to the third musical Rebecca coming to town this month - the great Rebecca Roudman, the crossover cellist behind Dirty Cello. They’re a super-powered stringband rocking the blues, bluegrass, classic rock, world music and much more. Rebecca treats her cello like an electric guitar, shredding her own special take on ‘Purple Haze,’ or on her own original, sassy, bluesy songs. The band have toured across the U.S., the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, and China, sharing their infectious and energetic style with sold-out crowds all over. They’ve appeared in Modesto once or twice a year since 2013, and are back to inaugurate the 25th season of Sunday Afternoons At CBS, one of the greatest concert series in town. INTER Architecture with Bob Barzan by Chris Murphy A few years ago, we featured local architecture aficionado Bob Barzan and architect Barrett Lipomi for their efforts to celebrate local architecture. This cause has been getting stronger each year and more efforts to preserve our community history have started, especially after the loss of the Cote D’Oro and the demolition earlier this year of the KRTB Radio building. Architecture is a key part of how Modesto is perceived and our celebration of our history to build our future is s very key. Today, Barrett writes a monthly ArchitectureView column and we caught up with the global traveller Bob Barzan to get his current perspective. ModestoView: What does the recognition of the value of architecture say about a city or community? Bob Barzan: There are many ways to tell what a community feels and thinks about itself and looking at architecture is one way to do that. In the early 20th century, the residents of Modesto were proud of their city and they were optimistic about the future. Their pride and confidence showed in the buildings they constructed here. They invested money not just on utilitarian buildings, but on some of the best designed and aesthetically beautiful buildings possible at the time. They brought in regionally and nationally known architects and landscapers with cutting edge design. The question I ask myself now is, What does the architecture constructed today tell me about the people of Modesto and how they think about themselves and their community? MV: What does Modesto need to do now to change our trajectory on preservation? BB: Modesto once had a national reputation for cutting edge architecture so it is particularly sad that we have torn down so many of our heritage buildings even ones on the national register of historic places. The best thing property owners can do to protect their financial investment in a property is to maintain the architectural integrity of the building. To restore, reuse, and re-purpose a heritage building makes sense financially and is a great gift to the community. Can you imagine what a loss it would have been if Tom Hogan and his

associates had torn down the old post office instead of re-purposing it? Have you noticed the huge improvement Ann Endsley made to the streetscape on 10th street with the restoration of her 1911 building? MV: What building’s speak the most loudly to you in Modesto? BB: My three favorite buildings downtown are from the mid-20th century modern period and all three are landmark worthy buildings. First is the 1965 Modesto Savings and Loan Building at 10th and I, unfortunately now empty. Second is the 1939 Hall of Records on I Street, the first Bauhaus county government building in California, and third is the 1960 court house by Mitchell Van Bourg a student of Walter Gropius. Other cities would give anything to have even one of these buildings. That we have three stunning examples from the period together with several smaller buildings makes downtown a potential architecture tourism magnet. And people come for our architecture. In one year, more than 10,000 of the architecture tour guides were downloaded from the Modesto Art Museum web site. More than 5,000 have come for each of the last three architecture festivals. MV: Why should the everyday citizen care about architecture and design in our community. BB: Number one is because it hits their pock-

etbooks. The best way to protect the financial investment that they make in their homes or buildings is to maintain the architectural integrity of the property. Remodels and updates can happen, but keep them within the scale and style of the original building. A building can have a totally new interior with the latest technology but the outside can maintain its historic elevation. Second, because well designed buildings work better. Third because beautiful buildings bring us joy and make us proud of our community. They speak about who we are.

MV: What is your #1 wish for Modesto architecture. BB: That we find a way to re-purpose the Hall of Records and the 1960s courthouse when they are no longer used as a courthouse. If I had a second wish, it would be to see many more restoration and re-purposing projects downtown including the bank at 10th and I, the old Kress Store, the Beaty Building, and the former Elk’s Building. And if I had a third wish, it would be to stop people from covering the original brick of their buildings with stucco.

It is September, and that means kids are back to school, fall is around the corner, and oh yes, the award winning architecture festival is back! The 9th annual Modesto Architecture Festival kicks off this month with 4 days and 30 opportunities to experience architecture in Modesto! The festival takes place from September 15-18th with the main events happening in downtown Modesto. Featured events this year include an Opening Reception, Architecture Film Night, Family Architecture Experience, and Architectural Tours. All events are free and open to the public. The Modesto Architecture Festival is a great time to get out and enjoy our wonderful architecture, landscapes and neighborhoods. The Modesto Art Museum has developed three self-guided architecture tours including walking, biking, and driving tours that highlight the amazing and rich architectural heritage in Modesto. No matter if you are new to Modesto or have lived here for decades, taking these tours will be an enjoyable and eyeopening experience. This year there will also be a 90-minute guided walking tour through Modesto’s Design District. The tour features fantastic mid-century buildings in downtown and will end at the historic former downtown post office where participants will have a rare opportunity to tour the building, including the secret passageways inside. One of my favorite events has always been Architecture Film Night at The State Theatre. This evening features an exciting and fun collection of short-films celebrating world architecture, landscape and urban design. The audience gets a chance to vote for their most favorite film.

The Hotel Covell is demolished in 1998 by Chris Murphy Reggie Rucker, one of Modesto’s fashion, style and marketing leaders has brought the community together to celebrate out own local style and build party week around it with fashion shows, films, outings and more. Fashion does not have to be expensive, or too exclusive, and it can be really fun to see how you can think differently about style. Whether thrift store or high fashion couture, there is really something everyone can enjoy. The 2016 Fashion Week is a great start and we hope this builds each year. ModestoView is proud to be one of the sponsors of this year’s event and we hope it really catches on and we see a cool new style council all over Modesto. Watch out for the fashion police. Thursday, September 15th The Art of Fashion will be on display, as art galleries and boutique shops will showcase the interdependent relationship of art and fashion during this special edition of the 3rd Thursday Art Walk in Downtown Modesto. Featured locations will be The Chartreuse Muse and Mistlin Gallery. The event runs from 5-9pm and is free to the public. Friday, September 16th is the Color Your Canvas fashion show at The Century in Downtown Modesto. This event will feature boutique apparel and jewelry designers that reflect the spirit of Modesto and our fashion week. Modesto Fashion Week started as a challenge to embrace the opportunity that is inherent in a vacuum. Where there is nothing, there is the potential for everything. We’ll use Fashion to highlight the truth that the most masterful of works began with a blank canvas. The event runs from 7-10pm and tickets start at $50. Saturday, September 17th is the Modesto Style beauty and fashion forum. Whether interested in a career in fashion or just curious about the people behind the trends, attendees will get an inside look at the fashion industry from the curators and creators of today’s styles. These professionals will share their stories and answer questions in intimate settings of 10-20 people. A panel luncheon will start the day from 11am-1pm. Breakout sessions will continue thereafter until 6pm featuring professional models, photographers, stylist, designers, hair & makeup artists, and more at Greens on Tenth. Tickets start at $25.

Sunday, September 18th will be the finale of Modesto Fashion Week as we invite the community to Ralston’s Goat in Downtown Modesto for a Mixer Over Mimosas. Attendees will have the opportunity to reconnect and network around the ideas and conversations started during the week, as well as make plans to continue the mission of Modesto Fashion Week into 2017. The mixer will be held from 11am-2pm and is open to the public.

A R C H I T E C T U R E Modesto Architecture Design Architecture is one of the most interesting things. It is everywhere you look, every thing you see is architecture. Walk into a hotel lobby and you have a feeling, see a building you don’t like and it still sees something in you. The difference between architecture and fashion is that fashion can come back, but once architecture is gone, it’s gone. We wait to save things until it is too late. We need to care now, about buildings that are here now and create the awareness in our community so we make this a priority. We lost many of the classic buildings like the Cote D’Oro or the Hotel Covell. 10th St still has some of the old classic buildings. Modesto is home to some of the best examples of mid-century modernism, there is a Frank Lloyd Wright home in Modesto and the classic bungalow with the porch is a Modesto specialty. The Modesto Architecture Festival will help open our eyes, point them in the right directions and hopefully inspire you to celebrate design. So starting September 15th we can open our eyes to the design world around us with the opening night reception at the Tinker Tank on J St. Friday night is Architecture Film night at the State Theatre. You don’t want to miss this global tour of design excellence. Saturday will be a Family Architecture and Kids workshop and guided tours of the downtown design district. To mic, or not to mic; is it even a question?

by Jimmie Menezes 2014 MAMA-award winning comedian A lot of my fellow ‘veteran’ comics like to ask me why, after 6 years as a performer (I know, that’s not long at all), I still like to open mic. Like a lot. Like a lot, lot. Like, even on nights I’m not booked. 2 or 3 nights a week, I’ll drive 2 hours just to get a piece of that stage. It’s worse if I’m booked and the trip pays for itself: if I’m booked in town A, I’ll go to town B 30 miles away, and town C 30 miles from town B, and drive yet another 30 miles out of the way to hit town D on the way home, just to hit 4 stages in one night. Quite the contrary; it’s how I GOT good and it’s how I STAY good. There’s also a reason I am constantly booked ALL OVER (& not just at one or two of my buddy’s rooms). Mic’n is the reason why I win awards and they’re sitting at home waiting for calls from bookers. Sure, money is a real thing, and I maximize my efforts and hit as many mics as I can in one night; I’m not in a band anymore and I’m not lugging around equipment from gig to gig, so it’s easy to do. I enjoy the different vibes of each room and even though I’m working on the same new-ish material at each one, each set comes out super different and the personality of the room lets me use different arrows from my quiver; in more colorful, artistic terms, I get to paint using more and more colors from my ever expanding pallet. What artist doesn’t strive for that; and even though it’s just a regular old night of open mic’n, I NEVER take that feeling for granted. Here’s an example of a typical, regular ol’ Monday night of open mic’n in the San Jose Bay Area:

Good ol’ riff rooms forcing ya to turn old stuff into new stuff and new stuff into old stuff while “just talking” OK, it’s probably closer to psychobabble, but hey, we are all comics here. 2) Peppertree, Union City, 9:30pm - More like a fun bar showcase than just a “mic”. In rooms like this, I practice stage craft, ie: reading a room, relating with the audience through crowd work and stories, squeezing laughs out of ‘em by being goofy and spontaneous, going between riffing & A+ material...ya know, like working...an audience...at a show...for realsies. It’s that whole: MMA-fighters-practice-gettingpunched-in-the-face-by-going-someplaceand-getting-punched-in-the-face thing. 3) Woodhams, Santa Clara, 11pm - It’s sink or swim in front of your peers and the regulars at “Woods”, and going up right after the roast battle really tests your mettle, especially when it comes to crowd work and putting out that lil’ bit of extra energy to get over Three open mics, 3 rooms, 3 different towns, 3 different audiences, 3 different sets, 3 different experiences. 3 different approaches to making ‘em laugh. Three different ways I got better - at least - than I was yesterday. Triple the laughs, triple the connections with people, triple the growth, & most importantly, triple the fun

by Middagh Goodwin MAMA Time by Middagh Goodwin With X-FEST not taking place in Modesto this year it looks like the Modesto Area Music Awards will be the most diverse event happening in downtown Modesto. What the MAMA’s lack in size, it makes up for in good times. With fifteen live performances, ranging from Jazz to Metal and everything in between, there is something to appeal to just about everyone. It is a celebration of our musical community that happens only once a year. It is so important that you support the local musicians, artists, and venues that give them a forum to create. We have seen the ebb and flow of the musical landscape over the last couple decades and now it is more important than ever that we all come together to revitalize Live Music in Modesto and the 209. Voting is live and you are the judge of who wins, make an effort to go through all the categories before hitting “submit”, because you can only vote once. So head on over to www.modestoareamusic. com/vote and check out all the mamanees. With over 200 nominees in over 20 categories, you are bound to have a hard time choosing who are your favorites. On October 11th after all the votes are in and tabulated, the awards will be given out at the historic State Theatre. The Modesto Area Music Awards is an invitation-only “Black Tie” Event. But don’t despair, for those who are unable to attend the event, it is broadcast live so no matter where you are in the world you can enjoy the music and anticipation. Chris Murphy and Chris Ricci are the

hosts of the show as always, and Heather Brent will be returning as the Trophy Presenter. Last year’s winners join in with presenting the coveted carhop trophies to this year’s winners. So before you cast your votes, I challenge you all to go out and catch a band or two that you have never seen or heard of before. Go to a venue that you have never been to and have fun doing some musical research. Check out and like the band’s facebook pages. Not only will you have a good time you might find a new spot or some new favorite music. It is like Old Home Week for our local Songwriters as we gather and jam and partake in the inspiration of the festivities. On Sunday, September 11 at the Knights Ferry General Store, Saloon and Grill an event sanctioned by Ryan Russell Music will be held to benefit the re-release of his CD, The Lonesome Traveler and help fund the completion of his unfinished work and community projects that

ALL AGES Hey Modesto!

by Earl Matthews Hello everybody! I hope you are feeling fine and ready to read about all things blues going on in our area for the month of September. I want to open up this talking to you about a band that is honestly the hardest working Blues band in the valley, Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood. Jeramy has been at it for a real long time and they really deliver a great show. They also host a jam every Thursday at Garlic Brothers in Stockton and you should check it out. You can take a look at their full schedule at Dangerous Blues Dot Com. On Sept 2nd Mark Hummel’s Golden StateLone Star Review is blowing into Black Oak Casino. This all-star band brought to you by the same man who produces the Harmonica Blowout every year, brings together heavy hitters from California and Texas for a show that is not to be missed. On the 3rd Rob Hill Band will be bringing their Jazzy Blue sounds back to P.Wexfords. It’s cozy and fun and I recommend you make it out there to see why P.Wex has been synonymous with music for over a decade. Poorhouse Millionaires will be playing at the Tap Room on the 9th. Also on the 9th at the State Theater JB Presents is celebrating 15 years with a big show featuring Rusty Zinn and Rod Piazza, John Clifton Band, The 44’s and More. Should be a great night. One of my favorite singers is coming to the Sutter Creek Theater on the 16th. Mr. John Memeth is not to be missed. He is an allaround dynamic performer to be sure. Then on the 17th the Delta Wires are coming to Black Oak Casino for a night of high energy horn driven blues that will keep you dancing. These fellas are true California blues mainstays; keeping the tradition alive and well. On the 18th you are going to want to check out the Guitar Army show with Robben Ford, Lee Roy Parnell, Joe Robinson at the Gallo Center for the Arts. I have seen Robben before and he has skills on the guitar that can’t be touched so I would bet money that the rest of the guys are coming ready for action. Plus it’s so close to home this is a no-brainer. Now if you haven’t seen Terrie Londee and the B-4 Dawn Band yet, you owe it to yourself to make it out to the Vintage Lounge in Turlock on the 23rd to hear this powerful lady sing and

From Football, Waterpolo, Golf, Tennis, Cross Country, and Volleyball, there are so many social activities right at your fingertips. Whether you go as a student or an alumni, support for your schools sports is always appreciated. I genuinely recommend all high school students,

or even prospective high school students to go to as many games as possible this year! School is such a wonderful time in your life and you won’t want to think back and regret not going. Along with this, I recommend all students to get involved in as many clubs as their schedule can take, it’s a great way to make new friends and keep yourself entertained through the year. Speaking of school, if you are a fourth grader it is your lucky year! In coalition with the White House, all national park visits will be free of charge for fourth grade students. In these efforts to get children more acquainted with the outdoors, I strongly recommend you take this opportunity as it is given! Point Lobos Reserve in Carmel, for day trips to these beautiful parks. If you would like to learn more about our great outdoors, then you should visit Modesto’s “Great Valley Museum”. Honestly one of the coolest things our town has to offer, MJC puts on a spectacular hands on science program for children and adults. On September 24th from 10-3pm, the GVM is having an interactive “Wild Planet Day” featuring a ton of “Batty” activities, quite literally. During this fun event there will be real bats on display for children to more intensely learn about. Another awesome thing coming up this month is “Family Movie Night at Graceada”. Starting on September 2nd and ending on September 23rd, every Friday there will be a new film being shown under the stars at Mancini Bowl. Currently the movies they plan to show are Hotel Transylvania, Norm of the North, Zootopia and The Good Dinosaur. It should be a wonderful September, I cannot wait to experience it with all of you. bring you all the good feelings. On the 24th I will be over at the St. Stanislaus Fall Festival with the Cryin’ Shame having a good time and helping raise money for a great cause. On the 25th Charlie Musselwhite will be over at the Fulton 55 in Fresno. Charlie is a personal hero of mine and I’m sure you will enjoy his band, as they are kick butt. And finally, last but not least, on the 30th of the month it’s time again for the Lodi Blues and Brews and Blues Festival. It was a lot of fun last year and should be a lot of fun again, Debbie Smith, Shad Harris and Jeramy Norris will all be there as well as a few others. Last year there were 6 breweries on site and it was a party! There is so much going on this month that I recommend you take a look at the main calendar to see it all. I just did my best to highlight the stuff that really caught my eye but, that doesn’t mean that something else won’t catch yours. Have a great month and I hope to see you out at a show

I am a man who appreciates one of God’s greatest creations on earth, the human body. So I’ll ask you to push aside all your reasons for not exercising, eating healthy and doing the right thing when it come to taking care of our bodies. I realizing that none of us are perfect, but we should all strive to be the best that we can be when it comes to mind, body and soul as our USA Olympic Team. Last month as I watched the 2016 Olympics I couldn’t help but be continuously in awe of what our bodies are capable of. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, yes you can! Yes you can overcome all obstacles, yes you can be the best athlete, runner, cyclist, swimmer, or anything else you want to become if you stay focused and work hard enough for it. I myself am a testament to this as many of you know I once weighed 330lbs and a smoker for over 26 years. Sure I’ve had a few ups and downs, that’s life, but with the strength I get from my faith and wife, I’m still striving hard to be the best I

can be. Not just myself, but also for those who I have the privilege in entertaining at many of the Fitness Events my business, The Quake DJ, is hired for. 2016 is coming close to an end and with that so does many of our local endurance races. Soon the weather will become colder and wetter and the sounds of Modesto’s Rockin’ Holiday will be here before you know it. This is why I’d like to personally invite you to participle, volunteer or just attend the last 2 local endurance races before Jack Frost starts nipping at your nose. Will I be there? You bet your sweet Astronauts I will, not as a runner but as your Quake DJ in fitness to Emcee and Entertaining your healthy lifestyle. On September 25th is The Peace Officers’ Memorial Run that features a 5K & 1/2 marathon through the streets of Modesto along with a kids fun run; “Chase The Crook.” On October 16th The Merco 1/2 Marathon & 5K takes place in Merced, CA. This well planned and organized race is filled with loads

of excitement on a flat course. Since it takes place in October you can expect the weather to be more than perfectly cool for this, the final local endurance race of the year.

It is important for our economy, to attract new business and make it possible for people that work for companies with national responsibilities able to live here. month and to get a break from business as usual. I found myself shaking my head in disbelief what the athletes the world over are able to do. Humans like you and me, except that they are equipped with such fantastic bodies and an unlimited will. Watching the incredible tenacity and strength of their at times record breaking performances is proof of what is humanly possible. Wow! The other really wonderful thing is to see the whole world coming together to compete in peace and harmony. Across political, racial and religious differences, here is the way the world and its inhabitants can co-exist. Once every 2 years at the Winter or Summer Olympics we watch this miracle, a fest of hope and love. We see the great struggle of the athletes and learn about what playing by the rules of their sports as well as observing the rules of true sportsmanship looks like. For the most part we see humans at their best, but we all know nobody is perfect.

Watching the Olympics this year made me think that life too is like a sport. We may not live in that highly competitive life of sports. But like the athletes we have our accomplishments and disappointments. Life has got its hurdles. Sometimes it may seem that we are faced with one challenge after the other. We are life champions. We have endured and survived a lot. We don’t have an audience and our medals are invisible. Our friends and family at certain times come together as a team to meet the challenges life presents. The rest of the time we grapple with life on our own the best we can. As Oprah Winfrey puts it: “You don’t get what you hope for. You don’t get what you wish for. You get what you believe in.” If you believe in something you will be motivated to make an effort towards it. The important thing is to give ourselves credit for our sincere efforts. The finals for the San Francisco Comedy Competition will be at the Gallo Center on Oct 1. This is an honor for Modesto. This monthly we will be laughing all along the way with great comedy from local comedians. Modesto Clean Comedy Contest winner Anthony K will be at Cheroot (915 10th) on Sept 6th and the 20th. The “Just Kidding” series at Ralston’s Goat (10th and J) continues with DJ Sandhu headlining with Paul Robert Starford featured and Gwendolyn Shreve Pol on Sept 15. There is $10 cover. AJ DeMello hosts “Stand Up for Charity” at the Queen Bean (1126 14th St) on Sept 9th No Cover but donations are requested for Tuolumne River Trust and will be headlined by San Jose Improv’s Joe Hughes. Unspoken Fall Gala Gallo Center for the Arts, Thursday, September 29th Modesto Gospel Mission will be hosting Unspoken for their annual Gala. They are featured regularly on K-Love and KAMB. For a band named Unspoken, they have been making a lot of noise. With two straight Top 5 singles (Who You Are and Lift My Life Up) and successful tours with bands like Sanctus Real and Big Daddy Weave, Unspoken has built steady momentum through their last two EPs. Pre-Show Reception will include: appetizers from Top Chefs of Modesto, silent auction featuring local artists, and a red carpet photo opportunity. Reception and Silent Auction starts at 5:30pm.
