are thousands and thousands of cities, but it is the creative cities that stand out. What does it really mean to be creative? Does it mean that there is a lot of art up or many galleries? Possibly, but it is really the culture and the embrace of the creative process. Does the city government encourage creativity and foster urban design? Are the arts a vital part of our community? Are people encouraged to be engaged and make change? These are some of the key questions that we need to tackle to truly be a creative city.

We are on a good path, we believe that music, culture, the performing arts are valuable but are they truly integral to what we do? One of the most creative persons in the world, George Lucas came from Modesto and what do we do with it? Do we share his innovative style? Are we networking so we can all be better? I think we are on that path. Creative design is just a different way to look at possible solutions to a problem. It opens our eyes and our ideas. With the efforts of Lee Davis, Bob Barzan and the local design community, we can put many of the processes in place that can lead to Modesto USA being a leader. Heck we even have our own Modesto font. Modesto has a very cool history and that means we can have a very interesting future, if we connect the dots and embrace it all. But what does it mean to win? It means we can attract the brightest and the best, we can change the jobs that people do in Modesto. We can be a magnet to college grads and company CEOs as quality of life is an important part of wanting to live and somewhere. It is more than just the job. It can be new food start ups,

It can happen and thanks to the readers of ModestoView, you see the work and the results of the creative side of our city. Then we connect all of the dots and it all works together. It is really special and we all need to support our actors, musicians, our artists, our chefs and the people that make our culture tick and make it fun to be here. Thank you all for that. We need to take time and enjoy it. I had my own scare this month when I realized that my heart was playing games with me and it sent me to the emergency room. I am still battling an erratic heart rate. This is scary. We have just lost Jim Harrelson and Kevin Garcia and it and makes you stop and think and remember that what is important is our family and friends. We are nothing without them and everything around us is just decoration. Thank you all for your kinds words and I am truly grateful for every friend and loved one. I thank you ModestoView readers for making this project worthwhile and part of our creative community fabric and that is good. Remembering Jim Harrelson

We lost a friend and a pillar of an exciting new regional business. Jim Harrelson, founder of Do Good Distillery passed away tragically from a sudden heart attack last month. The Library’s 2017 Summer Reading program

has concluded, kids have returned to school, and the Stanislaus Library Foundation is gearing up for a busy fall season of fundraising and spreading awareness of the library and its programs. With 13 branches located throughout the county, our library system provides vital services, including: · Reading programs for children, and safe places for teens to read and study; · Senior services, like computer training, access to large print books, and delivery to the homebound; · Access to job applications, employment services, and job training resources, as well as business and economic information for businesses; · Literacy training for adults and families; · Access to nearly 700,000 books and publications, DVDs and CDs and an expansive collection of online databases with access to more than 100,000 downloadable audiobooks, movies, TV shows, music albums, eBooks, and magazines; and, · Free access to computers and Wi-Fi. The Stanislaus Library Foundation (SLF) supports the entire library system by providing funding for programs, e-books, and special

events. The Summer Reading Program is one of the most popular, with more than 13,000 participants each year. SLF accepts donations from community members in order to maintain its support. A new Pop-up Library at the county’s Juvenile Justice Center was launched recently. Funded by community donations, incarcerated youth may borrow books, so they can use their time productively. The outreach librarian also conducts book clubs with the teens, which they attend eagerly. Books are giving these young people opportunities to think about the world in different ways and perhaps envision a brighter future. The Foundation’s annual Authors Garden Gala is September 23, 2017. The theme, Young Minds + Libraries = Our Future, reflects awareness that millennials use libraries at an increasing rate. A young local author, Juliana

The four walls pucker the way cheeks do when the tongue has tasted something bitter. The sky has committed itself to rain. The roof wants to give up. Underneath, a girl hears the plinking of the drops against the bony house. II. You might want to know what it would be like to live there, but you’ve never stopped to ask the young girl in the splintered home how well the tractor tire works as a swing— dangling from the fat willow branch. III. Today, she has gone to school. Her house exists inside her like a broken rib. They know where she has come from; they have seen her walking home. She doesn’t hurry; her left foot is slow. She limps— or the world is crooked.

ART Labor Day and Back-To-School By Jim Christiansen Labor Day and back to school. Time to consider some classes. Mistlin Gallery, Chartreuse Muse, Carnegie Arts Center all field art classes. So do other groups like The Shire, The Black Sheep’s ink, Black Hearts and the Tri-Chromatic Gallery. Commercial party art places, Art Time and Sip Wine, and Pinot’s Pallette are open. MJC and CSUS galleries are open with plenty of art to enjoy. I bring this up as opportunities to access the arts exist in our area, at all skill levels, media, depth of interest. It’s here. Get out to Art Walk and Art Events, there is an Art Scene in Modesto. I’m writing with a broken wrist from an injury hanging art. Use a ladder where you can, and follow the usual safety rules. But since the art is up, you can see some of my work at Barkin’ Dog, Chartreuse Muse and if I make the cut at Mistlin Gallery for the juried Members Autumn Festival show. A Time to Perform in September

By Kaye Osborn and Chris Murphy Autumn is my favorite time of the year. Hopefully our temperatures begin to cool, leaves change colors, and the Delta breeze swirls relaxingly. Many local theater groups are publicizing dates for Open Auditions. They are looking for fresh, new, undiscovered talent. High schools and colleges are making final decisions about their dramatic and musical shows that will be produced during the school year. CHEF Papachino’s – A Smooth Transition into Mediterranean Heaven

My picture may not have given it away.

So, just in case, I am going to help you out here. I am not Greek. I have never sailed the Mediterranean Sea, nor have I had an opportunity to visit any of the beautiful countries such as Lebanon, Israel, Italy, or Greece - that surround it. In fact, I have never tried an authentic Mediterranean dish at all – Until now! On the 16th and 17th of September, Modesto celebrates The Greek Food Festival. However, this afternoon, with encouragement from Chris Murphy, (our Publisher), I stepped out to try Mediterranean food for the very first time. Chris recommended Papachino’s Greco-Roman Restaurant. I had no idea what to expect, but I didn’t think it would kill me! Seriously, I died! I died and went straight to: Mediterranean Foodie Heaven! Conveniently located at 1212 J Street, Papachino’s is a charming family restaurant. Manuel Escobedo has been the owner since 2008. He was gone the day I came in, so instead, I spoke with his son, Manager, Manuel Escobedo Jr. and the Assistant Manager, Christina Martinez. Modesto View photographer, Michael (MJ) Mangano also came along. He took the fabulous photographs! Papachino’s menu has a plethora of tantalizing Appetizers, Pastas, and Gyro (pronounced Euro), Sandwiches. The food is made from scratch, – in-house. Everything! Since I was new to Mediterranean food, I asked Manuel if he had a favorite dish and he smiled. Manuel genuinely smiles from inside. “I really cannot pick a favorite Tasha, but I do love our Chicken Marsala,” he said. Can you guess what I tried? Yup! You got it! I went with the Chicken Marsala! From first glance of the dish, I had to pinch myself a bit! I could barely bring myself to pierce it with my fork, because it was so pretty to look at! It is cooked in-pan, with a Marsala wine sauce. Then, heavy cream is added to thicken the sauce even more. Finally, the dish is topped off with sautéed mushrooms that are seasoned to perfection! Next, I had a Gyro. The Gyro sandwich begins with a rotisserie mix of beef and lamb. The meat is then served over handmade pita bread and filled with a heap of seasoned tomatoes, sliced red onions, lettuce and Papachino’s specially made Tzatziki Sauce. I ended my meal with a dessert called Baklava and I loved that as well!

Preparing to go home, I asked a question just for you! “I’m curious,” I said, “Do you have an easy Mediterranean recipe that you would be willing to share with the Modesto View readers?” Quickly, Christina chimed in, “Sure! Humus,” she said, “And here is the recipe.”: 4 cups Cooked Garbanzo Beans (Set aside leftover juice) 1 cup Tahini 2 Tablespoons Salt 1 Tablespoon White Pepper 1 Tablespoon Cumin 5 Tablespoons Lemon Juice Puree all ingredients with the left over garbanzo juice. Add garlic, paprika, and spices for flavor. Graciously, I thanked Christina for sharing her recipe, but I still had one last question for Manuel. “Manuel, we have a traditional question that we like asking, here at Modesto View Magazine,” I said. “Beatles or Stones?” Still smiling, he answered, “The Beatles! If each of us spends just an average of $5 a month at local Cafes, Diners, and Restaurants, that amount adds up to $512,382.50 a month. In a years time, that comes to $6,147,990.00. Remember I told you to not forget about that statistic of 68%? Modesto’s population is approximately 204,933, it is the 18th largest city in California. What does that ultimately mean? There are a lot of people living in and around Modesto. Statistics show that about 68% of what is spent locally is reinvested in the community. Remember that statistic. Independent retailers return back into the community more than three times as much money per dollar of sales than chain competitors. How can we grow our local economy? What I am suggesting is if we all just switch our spending, even just a little it will add up to a huge impact. $5 a month the price of a cup of coffee at one of those corporate cafes is all I am talking about. That minute amount adds up in a very

Little recaps of last month’s metal events: Our beautiful, amazing 209 Metal family raised $1,135 for Keith Peters at his Parkinson’s benefit August 5th. The benefit was a huge success thanks to all of our friends and family. We had over a hundred people in attendance and the promoters, bands, hosts and acts put on quite the show. I’m very proud to be a part of our cities Metal scene. We are like no other. There is power in numbers and I’m still in shock at the amount that was raised in just five short hours. Hang the Kode’s cd release party on August 11th was a blast. Tons of people went home with their new album Molotov Cocktail Party. The band played fast and hard, leaving me in a whirlwind of punk and thrash. Modesto’s Sworn to the Black and Stigmurder had the crowd moshing. It felt amazing to mosh with people I didn’t know because they were sure to push and shove me around hard and it allowed me to let out any aggressions I had. That’s the beauty in Metal music. It allows you to let out your emotions in safe way thru play. Moshing! Etched in Stone is no longer. I had the pleasure of attending EIS very last show in their hometown of Modesto. The band had been together for over eleven years has parted ways. I do want to say their last performance was phenomenal and very entertaining. Look for future music endeavors coming from these very talented boys Brian Lewis, David Yanez, Eric Wolford and Aaron Jones. In other news Aaron Jones (drummer of Modes-

by Eve Oberlander to’s NBL) is currently drumming for Discordia. Discordia is special and unique, haunting and melodic in being a symphonic metal band. Members include: Cindy Cannon on Lead Vocals, Becca McCabe Keyboard/Vocals, Bobby Cannon Guitar/Vocals, Joel Krueger Bass/ Vocals and our Aaron on Drums. Discordia has a pretty big fan base originally hailing from San Francisco, with members from the Bay, Sac and Modesto. This band is totally different for Aaron; he has a newfound sense of excitement which brings a different feeling to his drumming style. He says it’s a mixture of jazzy rock, progressive and heavy. Playing three different styles of metal has helped him progress as a musician. Discordia tells me they sent Aaron their material to practice and set up a date to jam. After the first rehearsal Aaron came in and “killed it”. By the second time they went thru the set he was already “on top of his game”. They knew right away that he would work and be a part of their team. He’s already played several shows including this year’s Turlock fair and opened for Adrenaline Mob. Design with a Mission: Lee Davis by Chris Murphy

Everything is designed. From the watch on your wrist, the park that you walk in, the chair that you’re sitting in, and the typeface you’re reading here, someone created and designed them all. Modesto has a rich and remarkable heritage of design dating back to the mid-1800s. Modesto’s design community is clicking into gear under the leadership of Lee Davis who recently founded the Modesto Design Collective (MO.DE) and who writes our monthly DesignView article. This week, as we celebrate the 10th annual Modesto Architecture Festival, we’ve asked Lee Davis to reflect on the broader role of design in our city. Lee Davis brings the concept of “social design” to our community. Social design is an emerging practice focused on bringing the creative process of design to help identify solutions to big social and environmental problems. Lee is co-director of the Center for Social Design at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore. He is an author of several titles about social entrepreneurship and was co-founder and CEO of NESsT, an incubator for social businesses. He has a Masters in Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University and a design degree from Connecticut College. Originally from New York, Lee lives in Modesto. Let’s get to know Lee Davis. ModestoView: People typically think that design only applies to physical things (e.g., buildings, products, etc.). But you see design playing a broader role in our community? Lee Davis: Yes. Designers do create all of the objects and things we interact with and all of the spaces where we live, work, play and pray. But designers are also rethinking the processes and systems that we are exposed to every day – like the patient experience in a hospital, the customer journey in a supermarket, or the system of support for people experiencing homelessness. MV: How do you see the concept of social design being applied here in Modesto? LD: In social design, we use the team “human-centered design” or “design thinking” to describe our process for engaging the people themselves most affected by a problem in finding ways to solve it. I would love to see a city design lab here in Modesto where designers could be engaged in envisioning new approaches, possibilities and opportunities in agriculture, business, government, healthcare, and social services. MV: In my previous life at Specialized Bicycles, we had a phrase, “who says that good design needs to be expensive?” What are your thoughts on this? LD: Yes, there’s definitely a common misperception that good design is only for the elite and wealthy. Increasingly corporations like Apple, Ikea and Target are demonstrating the value of bringing good design to the mainstream consumer. But what’s even more exciting now is seeing city governments and social sector organizations embracing design to improve the delivery of social services or to address bigger problems of climate change, education, healthcare, etc. We’re seeing a “democratization” of design happening nationally and internationally.

MV: What inspired you to connect design and social policy? LD: I started as a pretty traditional graphic designer in a design studio working for clients like Bank of America and Xerox. And while I loved the creative environment, my heart was elsewhere. I first heard of social design when I read Victor Papanek’s seminal book, “Design for the Real World,” that challenged designers to think critically about their role and responsibility in society. MV: Describe the kinds of things that really inspire you? LD: My husband is from Brazil and I can say I’ve yet to see any other country on earth more vibrant. The creativity, natural beauty, architecture, and design aesthetic are simply amazing. Often the greatest designs are those that emerge despite the greatest constraints. But specifically in the area of social design, the Center for Urban Pedagogy in Brooklyn, Design Impact in Cincinnati, Greater Good Studio in Chicago, and Liz Ogbu in Oakland, inspire me. MV: Do you think good design should be so good it is invisible or should it be obvious? LD: Good design is often both invisible AND obvious. I mean, the best ideas are oftentimes the most simple and the best solutions are usually right in front of our noses. Designers just help us to listen and to see or imagine the invisibly obvious. MV: How can we create momentum in Modesto for the design leadership you’re advocating through MO.DE? LD: I’ve been talking a lot lately about our lack of “creative confidence” in Modesto. I think our biggest obstacle is not a lack of talent but a lack of confidence that we COULD be a design capital. We’re currently documenting the rich history and heritage of design in Modesto back to the mid-19th century and it’s amazing what we’re finding. We really do have a design tradition here. We just haven’t captured and celebrated it. And, we’re starting an initiative called Modesto 20/20 to engage designers in imagining the future of our city as we approach our sesquicentennial in 2020. We need to break this cycle of collective low self-esteem here in Modesto. And I think design can help us do that. MV: How does the city and the county team with the design leaders to make things happen? LD: One would hope that a city with an architect as a mayor would value design more intentionally. But I think the vision and initiative for design innovation in Modesto will come from the design community itself. We need to educate city and county leadership about the value of design and the potential of design to add value in achieving priority city and county goals. And I’m not talking about designing

logos and websites or decorating government office buildings (although we can do that too). I’m talking about design as a partner at the table participating in shaping a collective vision. MV: What are some of the ways non-designers or the non-artistic can get involved? LD: About 20% of the 170+ people that came to our kick-off event for MO.DE in June at the Gallo Winery weren’t designers at all. There’s lots of opportunity for “design allies” to get involved. Design is a collective, collaborative, interdisciplinary process. The best and most creative ideas are generated by diverse teams of people with various expertise and backgrounds who co-create together. So we want and need people who represent the rich diversity of our community. MV: Your team at the Center for Social Design at MICA has been very successful at demonstrating the role of design in social innovation, how can those models apply here? LD: I’m especially interested to explore how we might replicate some of the elements of our social design post-graduate fellows program at MICA here in Modesto. I’d like to see a Modesto Design Fellowship here that trains and embeds young designers into all types of local institutions and organizations to spark creative and innovative problem solving. MV: What is your dream to see happen in Modesto? LD: I have dreams of Modesto as a vibrant design capital with a city design lab downtown that supports local design talent and brings design into all aspects of our community. I’ve been so encouraged by the excitement around MO.DE already, so I don’t think it’s an unrealistic vision. I was so lucky to participate in the New Leadership Network (NLN) organized by Stanislaus Community Foundation this year. The unbelievable community of people I connected with in NLN have been so supportive of my crazy ideas and are holding me accountable that this is going to happen. Soon. MV: What is the key obstacle to achieving this vision? LD: There’s no infrastructure here (yet) to support these ideas so we’re endeavoring to build it. The vision is there. It’s just time and money. Mostly money. And time. And money. MV: What is your favorite thing about living in Modesto? LD: First and foremost is the amazing community of friends Daniel and I have here. And then there’s the weather. None of my east coast family and friends can pick figs, citrus, herbs or roses in their yard 365 days of the year. MV: Our signature question - Beatles or Stones? LD: That’s a dangerous question for me, being married to a musician. But I have to say The Beatles. Ringo Starr and I have the same birthday.

Design impacts nearly every aspect of our lives. So naturally investing in good design enhances our lives and improves our community. When buildings, parks, roadways, and signs are well designed they add to our lives and become something worth encouraging and celebrating. The Modesto Architecture Festival does just that, it’s a celebration of the joys of good design, the benefits it brings to our city, and the often hidden members of our community that make it happen. The festival has grown from a single night of architecture movies in 2008 when about 250 people attended to an 8-day festival that has had as many as 5,000 visitors and 135 events. This year marks the milestone Tenth Annual Modesto Architecture Festival and there is something fun, inspirational, and informative for everyone of every interest and age: tours, exhibits, movies, kid’s activities, and special events. All official events and activities are free; events hosted by partner organizations may have an admission charge. The festival, hosted by the Sierra Valley Chapter of the AIA and the Modesto Art Museum, opens on Sunday, September 17, with exhibits, tours, and a screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window at the State Theatre. Randy Seifkin will introduce the architectural features of the movie. Activities, more than 80 of them, will continue through the week including a guided tour of downtown architecture; and an evening of architecture and design movies at the art deco

The popular Family Architecture Experience/Kid’s Workshop will be at the main branch of the Stanislaus County Library, 1500 I Street, on Saturday, September 23, from 9:30 am to 2 pm. Fun and exciting crafts, games, and activities for children of all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This year, the festival will expand its usual focus on architecture, urban design, and landscape and will include the entire spectrum of design. The recently organized Modesto Design Collective is a new partner in the festival and will host an event on Tuesday evening, September 19. In 2015, the American Institute of Architects presented the Sierra Valley Chapter its National Excellence Award for the Modesto festival, calling it “not just educational but also exciting, inspirational, and a whole lot of fun”. Some of greatest buildings have been tragically torn down, some were abandoned, and some just got the wrecking ball in the name of “progress”. With the creation of Mo.De, our design community is linking up to do even better things and Modesto Architecture week is coming Sept 18 -24 so we will be much smarter about the future. But wait, there’s more! There is so much around us right now that you can enjoy. Let’s look around

Font Story You know we love Modesto, but did you know that there is a Modesto Font? Our designer, Pete Grimaldi, worked his magic on this issue and has incorporated the Modesto type in this issue. This font was designed by Jim Parkinson back in 2000 and was featured in the Modesto Design exhibit at the McHenry Museum. He took his initial inspiration from the lettering on Modesto’s train station. According to Parkinson, “I took a snapshot of the lettering on the Modesto train station several decades ago and modeled the [Modesto] typeface on that lettering.”

Modesto Train Station Attention Commuters! Our downtown train station will soon be the hub of transportation that it used to be decades ago when the rails were king. With ACE train coming to Modesto, you will see this amazing building come back to life. But it is there, now, at the head of a new J Street gateway, reminding us that our past is also key our future. Think about the cool new possibilities.

Cool Graphics Like our very on ModestoView M that I designed back in the late 90s, there are some really cool graphics in our community, many created by individuals and our local design firms. One of our favorites has been the original X Fest logo by Bruce Freeby and the Cruisers logo created by Marcia Herrmann Designs. What is one of your favorites local graphics designs? Bike Racks Modesto is a bike town and we are pedaling fast to make it even better. Modesto has been recognized for some of the traffic calming and the new bike lanes that are putting bikes in a safe place and truly sharing our roads. We know some of you don’t like it, but it really will make our city easier to navigate and safer. I live near downtown now and I ride my bike downtown when ever possible. Murals inspire It is amazing how a really cool mural makes you feel. It makes a statement, it says something about our community, makes you think and makes you smile and most of them celebrate a part of our history or some of our community assets that bring people together. Downtown Modesto features a Classic Community Mural tour that celebrates our American Graffiti and Classic Car heritage featuring 12 murals. Murals in Motown has created two large scale pieces celebrating Royal Robbins and our valley agriculture. These murals transform the streetscape, and engage our own people and visitors alike. Barbie Garrison - On the Cover Barbie has been a designer in the valley for over 8 years. She won the haute Couture scholarship from the Stockton couture Society began attending FIDM in 2009. While in design school she began interning and learning french couture under Colleen Quinn. Interning for Colleen she help create a piece representing the silicon valley that was displayed in the silicon valley Museum of textiles. After leaving Colleen Quinn couture she freelanced making wedding and evening gowns. Now Barbie works for Amy Burke designs in San Francisco designing high-end Florals and making costumes for Comic-Cons

Art Alleys are Coming Part of urban design is how you make use of unusable space like alleys. We have a lot of alleys. Murals and art come together to take back some of the parts of our town that normally get hidden. Downtown Modesto has a network of alleys, that instead of being the place for utilities and dumpsters, could actually be a walkable, safe, well-lit and inspiring place. The first Art Alley project we are working on is the alley on J Street that connects to I between 10th and 11th. This could one day be a dynamic space connecting J St to the parking garage, the Gallo Center and 10th St. What a view! Modesto mom Rachel Loredo is creating The Awesome Spot, Modesto’s first inclusive playground in Beyer Community Park. Loredo’s son Tommy was born with arthrogryposis (the same congenital joint condition of Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski) and requires a walker or wheelchair. Inspired by a visit to an inclusive playground in Palo Alto where Tommy could play independently, Loredo teamed up with Modesto landscape architect Chad Kennedy to design a similar playspace here. Bob Barzan has been the greatest visionary and champion for design/architecture in Modesto. Much of the work happening in Mo.De and in Modesto urban design now is an outgrowth of his pioneering research on architectural history in the city. “In the last 140 years, there’ve been several times when Modesto was a model for good design and I think we are entering another period when the city’s designers are translating their experiences, struggles, opportunities, and successes into inspiring creativity in fields as diverse as agricultural technology, graphic arts, urban design, and architecture

Art as Play Modesto’s 25-foot play sculpture has been attributed to Modernist Robert Winston, following an in-depth study by Modesto Art Museum’s founder and architecture curator, Bob Barzan. It’s one of our city’s great mid-century design treasures but sits neglected amidst a growing tent village of citizens experiencing homelessness, but a new effort by PG&E to create a new dog-park where an old locomotive, may give this structure new life. If not, we need to find a new home for this in our community.

Ecology Design

Cliff Humphrey, from a modest office in the Roseburg and Tully Shopping center, Humphrey designed curbside pickup to make recycling more efficient and convenient for residents. He hoped that the simple task of sorting garbage would make people more environmentally conscious. This was not a small undertaking in “conservative” Modesto at a time when the concept of recycling was still novel. He met early resistance and skepticism from city officials and the public. “If we can make recycling work here, it will work anywhere,”

What and Who is Mo.De?

The gathering, created by Lee Davis and supported by Liza Butler of EJ Gallo Winery was an opportunity to evolve a collective vision for MO.DE going forward. The MO.DE brand, designed by the talented local designer Eric Le, was unveiled, as was a mission statement: “The Modesto Design Collective (MO.DE) is a community of designers, innovators, makers, and creative visionaries. They are committed to making Modesto a vibrant design capital that values, celebrates and supports design and the broader creative community. There will be an upcoming event on September 19. We can do this Modesto, be the creative city we can be. These are the things that will attract the new generations and keep the current ones here. Remember, creative cities win and are poised for the future.

Hello everybody, we are entering into my favorite time of year - Fall. The weather is nice and my birthday is just around the corner so let’s all start celebrating it early with some great music. On September 2nd I will be on the Oakdale Beer train again with the Cryin’ Shame. It’s a real great way to spend an evening, chugging along and dancing to some sweet blues! Sunday the 3rd you might want to think about heading up to Moke Hill at the Hotel Leger for an afternoon of blues with Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood. These guys are real pros and know how to take the party to the people. Also on the 3rd Mark Hummel’s Golden State Lone Star Review are taking the stage at the Torch Club in Sacramento. Mark has assembled a group of heavy hitters from California and Texas to bring you some real authentic harmonica blues. On the 8th Brad Wilson will be at Black Oak Casino. Brad is a rock blues performer who plays a shredding style of guitar, should be a real fun night. Terrie Londee will be back at Yosemite Lanes 300 Club on Sept 9. Terrie is a fantastic vocalist with a great band and they serve up a danceable

mix of Blues, Funk, Classic Rock and anything else that feels good. Also on the 9th, Ann Popovic will be at Moe’s Alley. LA based Serbian born Ana is a world class guitar player who has earned here stripes on stages globally. This is an amazing opportunity to see this multi award winning guitar player in an intimate setting. I have some big news for you all, starting on the Wednesday 13th I am going to be producing a weekly show again at the newly opened Copper Rhino 2 on Oakdale Rd. I will be kicking off the first show with my Band the Poorhouse Millionaires and our friend Christian Boyatt. My lady Felicia will be doing a little comedy and hosting the show. Ready for some more free shows? Cheroot Lounge in Modesto has free comedy every other Tuesday at 8 p.m. This month the Tuesdays are the 12th and the 26th. This show is hosted by MAMA Comedy Award winner Anthony K. The lineup is always a surprise and usually features local and nationally touring comics. This is a free show in a small room so get there early. Also, smoking is allowed in the room in case you have sensitivities. The Outpost Saloon in Waterford has free comedy the last Wednesday of every month. This month’s show is the 26th at 8:30 p.m. The lineup feature comics from all over California and surrounding areas. A friend of mine told me a story about destiny. He didn’t know the origin of the story. But I liked it and want to share it with you. A beggar comes home to his shack and sees a mouse eating his food. He is upset. “Why do you take my food? Why don’t you go to the rich people and take their food? Everything I gain I lose again.” The mouse says: “It is your destiny to be poor.” “Why should it be my destiny? “ the beggar cries. The mouse replies “I don’t know, go ask Buddha.” So the beggar gets on the road to find Buddha. Night-time falls and the beggar passes by a house that belongs to rich people. He rings the bell and asks if he can rest there one night. The owner of the mansion wants to know what he is doing to be out so late and where it is that he’s he going? The beggar tells him that he is going to see Buddha to ask him a question. The man says “Oh, we have a daughter who cannot speak. Can you please ask a question for us?” The beggar says: “For sure I will ask Buddha for you.” The next day he continues on his journey. He finally reaches many mountain peaks. He meets a wizard. The beggar says, “ I need to get over the mountain peaks.” The wizard tells him that he can take him there. As they land on the other side, the wizard asks, “So where are you going?” The beggar says I have a question for Buddha. The wizard says, “Can you ask him a question for me? I have been here a 1000 years and I’m supposed to go to heaven. Ask Buddha what I have to do.” The beggar says, “For sure, I’ll ask.”

After that he walks to a lake that he cannot cross. A giant turtle shows up. The turtle asks : “Where are you going?” The beggar says I got to get across the lake. The turtle says, “Get on my back, I’ll take you there.” When they get to the other side the turtle asks, “Where are you going?” The beggar says that he has a question for Buddha. “Can you ask a question for me?” the turtle says “I have been around for 500 years, by now I should be a dragon. How can I be a dragon?” When the beggar finally meets Buddha, Buddha says, “Anyone can ask only 3 questions.” The beggar thinks to himself, I have 4 questions. I will forget about my own question, and so he asks the question about the daughter. Buddha says the girl will speak when she meets her soulmate. When asked about the wizard Buddha says he must get rid of his wizard stick, because it grounds him to the earth and therefore he cannot go to heaven. And when asked about the turtle Buddha says he has to get rid of his shell, then he can fly and be a dragon. The beggar returns to the turtle and tells him what the Buddha said. When the turtle gets rid off his shell there are pearls that were lodged under the shell. They fall into the beggar’s hands as the turtle flies into the air. Then he returns to the mountain where the wizard is waiting to hear the answer to his question. As the wizard gets rid off his wizard’s stick all his wisdom is imparted onto the beggar. Finally, the beggar returns to the rich people’s mansion. The beggar tells the people that the girl will speak when she sees her soulmate. FIT Re-Excite Your Race by Efren Martinez I’m always looking for a new and exciting way to expand my racing horizon and create a new challenge for myself, perhaps I not alone. I’ve found some exciting new races out of our area. Racing a new race is exciting on every level. For one, you meet and make friends with so many other runners from all over the state/country. The course will always be new and you never know just how many grandpas at the start line next to you will serve you your racing “butt” at the finish line. Yes friends, age is just a number and if you’re in the 40-50 age group rage you know this can be a very fast group to race in. Friends, if you’re looking to re-excite your race on a whole new level, I’d invite you to explore the idea of an out of town race or even a new inaugural race here in town. Doing so not only brings your family together for a short road trip holiday, but will also encourage everyone in your family to be part of the excitement of fitness. Of course you don’t always have to look too far for a new race, last month my friend, Tommy Jacobs, helped bring us The Davis High Spartan Spear-It 5K Run with a big success. So if your looking to stay closer to home for your next

race, let me invite you personally to a new local race. It’s The UCP of Stanislaus County Safari Dash. It’s a 5k & 1/2 Mile walk/run on Saturday, October 21st. This will be an Event for runners & walkers of all abilities and all proceeds go to benefit the developmentally disabled community served by UCP. Not only are you running for a great cause, but it will be a new racing experience for you. According to my friends at UCP. “ The race is at our local La Loma Park, the medals will be designed by a local metal worker Kevin Walkey & you are encouraged to dress as your favorite animal. Look for me, I’ll be dressed as the “speedy tortoise”, my wife will be the “hare”. Traditional Speed Workout Begin with two 100-meter accelerations that include 40 meters at top speed, with 2 to 3 minutes of walking or jogging between. Build to 6 x 150 meters hard, including 80 meters at top speed, with 3 to 4 minutes jogging or walking rest. Over time, increase the number of repeats to 10, lengthen reps to 300 meters (running nearly the entire distance at top speed), or reduce the rest interval to one minute

In one day, I can see a theatre show, visit a college campus, have a great milkshake, bike next to a river, see a live band and tour an art gallery...without leaving my city. That is something all Modesto area people get to say!! The places I have been going lately are Cornell’s Records for music, Scenic Drive-In for milkshakes, Chartreuse Muse for art, Tokyo Express for great food and Escape Modesto for entertainment!! Along with these places, I spent all summer going to local music and art shows with my friends. It’s an incredible way to make new friends and hang out with a cool group of young people. Cornell’s Records have had some really fun (FREE) events this summer, so be sure to follow them on Facebook to stay updated. After 12 years of continuous elected service as your Sheriff and nearly 30 years in public safety, I have decided to retire at the end of my current term in office. Next to my wife and beautiful children, serving as your Sheriff has been the greatest experience of my life - and I will miss leading an outstanding team of law enforcement professionals. I look forward to spending more time with my family and especially my wife Yvonne, who has patiently and forgivingly accepted all the time I spend away from home in support of the Sheriff’s Office and the community we serve. This decision did not come lightly, and only after much thought, deliberation, and considering my family goals, I believe that I have made the right decision. I have served with the Sheriff’s Office since 1996 and have enjoyed every moment of it. Since being elected Sheriff in 2006, we have created one of the most successful and innovative law enforcement organizations in the central valley. Over the last 12 years, we have been able to build a stronger organization. Our Public Safety Restoration Plan, supported and funded by the Board of Supervisors is complete. We’ve added much needed public safety facilities, 552 new jail beds, a medical/mental health care unit, a Day Reporting Center, a new state-of-the-art Coroner’s Facility and our Re-Entry and Enhanced Alternatives to Custody Training (REACT) Center. The Sheriff’s Regional Training Center is once again providing law enforcement training for new recruits along with advanced officer training and continued professional training opportunities. The Sheriff’s Department is recruiting, hiring and training well qualified, well educated public safety professionals to continue protecting and serving the residents of Stanislaus County. I cannot thank the community enough for supporting the men and women who work for the Sheriff’s Office My decision to retire is also an opportune time for someone with a forward-looking vision and strong leadership background to lead your Sheriff’s department to even greater heights. Patterson Police Services Chief Jeff Dirkse is that leader. I believe Chief Dirkse has the grounded principles and calm decision making abilities to become the 22nd Sheriff of Stanislaus County. As a long term resident of Stanislaus County, he graduated from Turlock High School and subsequently attended West Point where he earned a bachelor's degree. He has been married to his wife Sandi for 23 years and they have three children. They live in Denair where they farm 40 acres of almonds. Chief Dirkse has served the Sheriff’s Office, our employees and the people of Stanislaus County with selfless dedication. For all of these reasons, I ask for your support of Chief Jeff Dirkse in electing him as your Sheriff in 2018. Finally, it has been a great honor to protect and serve the people of Stanislaus County. We are combining our Modesto music, art, fun, and an amazing pop up bar located under the giant 57 Chevy Mural on J St. There will be a bike ride scavenger hunt to collect cool bike trinkets to lead you to the Extempore Bar to pick up your prizes.
