Yes we love high school football season. Going for the touchdown pass is Dawaiian McNeely, a Senior at Central Catholic High School and is a 2 year JV player 2 year Varsity player. He is 6’2” and weighs in at 206 lbs. and will be a solid force during the Central Catholic Raider’s Season. He has eight Division 1 offers from the following Schools: Oregon St., Fresno St., Arizona St., Utah St., Hawaii, Tulane University, UNR and Wyoming. We wish him a great season and congrats on an excellent perfect spiral catch from JV Coach Ken Sauls.

some cool innovations in the quest to save our water. For some reason, September always seems to be the start of a new season, football, school sports and even the performing arts. It is always cool to see the new lineups, the teams, the schedules and get all stoked for the rest of the year. This year is no exception and the line-ups are super stellar. We will be previewing a lot of these here in this issue. Not only that, we will be sending our ace photographer MJ Mangano out to the Friday Night games and he will be posting cool galleries of the players each week and of course, we will be capturing amazing photos at many of the concerts, performances and events this season. ing? It does because it describes the people that are making great changes, building new ideas, creating new spaces, and planning better things for our community and our future. We want our brightest and best back here in Modesto so that we continue our path of vibrancy and innovation. Best of all, it is amazing when we get our young people to come back to town after college or their first jobs somewhere. We are so very fortunate that our daughter Abigail is returning this month to Modesto with a great new career at Innov8 Partners in marketing and digital media. We could not be any prouder of her and are beyond excited that she is making a great career here in our hometown. But we want more! The brightest and best doesn’t have an age. Creativity and success have no time limit. We need to celebrate the brightest, the most innovative, the most creative, the most giving, and the most compassionate no matter what their ages. There is excitement in the youth and there is wisdom with age and it is up to us to make sure that we look what what’s in our heads, hearts and deeds beyond the number of candles on our cakes. The family friendly community event celebrating the LGBTQ+ community will be happening Saturday, September 22, 2018 at John Thurman Field in Modesto 1 pm to 8 pm. $5 admission, kids 12 and younger are free. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Stanislaus County has a new director and we caught up with him at the West Modesto Club to discuss his vision for the future of the Stanislaus County Clubs. “There has been a little drop in the daily attendance because of the turnover here at the club,” said Director Craig Ward, “What we are trying to do here is get our average daily attendance up. We want to get upwards of 100 [kids per day]. We are averaging 100 at all three of the other sites so that’s what our plan is for this site.” The Boys & Girls Clubs of Stanislaus County has four club locations, all of which director Craig Ward oversees. There are three school clubs: the Brown Elementary and Sylvan clubs, which are
for elementary-aged children between 1st and 5th grade, and Somerset Middle School club which is for middle school-aged children. The fourth club is the West Modesto club located in the King-Kennedy Memorial Center which hosts children from ages 7-17. As part of the effort to raise attendance levels, Mr. Ward wants to get the word out about his structured after school program. Mr. Ward said, “After school programs are a big part of the Boys & Girls Clubs and it’s probably the cheapest after school program that you are going to be able to get involved in because we only charge ten dollars a year and that even rolls over into the summer program. This year

we were able to go on 14 field trips with over 100 kids each. The kids visited places like the Exploratorium, McHenry Bowl, Rockin’ Jump, and different schools and colleges including UC Merced, Stanislaus State, San Jose State, UC Davis, and UC Berkeley. There is a 700 kid waiting list [for after school programs] in Modesto City Schools and we would like to service some of those people since Modesto City Schools can’t service all of them. We want to be here as a relief for them. Our after school program is here at the West Modesto Club in the King-Kennedy Memorial Center every day after school from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and we have what is called ‘Power Hour’ for the first hour. This allows for them to get their homework done. Then we go into ‘Triple Play’ which is their play-learn session, where they are able to play different games and are ‘tricked’ into learning. They don’t realize that they are learning since they are actually having fun at the same time.” In contrast with Modesto City Schools, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Stanislaus County does not have a waiting list for their after school program. According to Director Craig Ward, “We have a no-child-left-behind type of situation here. We will continue to accept students until our ratio is higher than we can accommodate. We have a 20:1 ratio of one Youth Development Professional (or YDP) per twenty kids, but we don’t turn anyone away. We will just continue to hire Youth Development Professionals to accommodate what we need. We do have a lot of volunteers when we go on our field trips, because then we go down to an 8:1 ratio, but there are all kinds of opportunities for anyone who wants to get involved. For example, right now we have a retired teacher who volunteers here three times per week and teaches art, which is great because he has one of those demeanors that really resonates with the kids. They are all drawn to him. Anyone who wants to mentor these kids, we welcome them with open arms.” There are a number of ways to contribute to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Stanislaus County. There is information on how to contribute financially on their website, as well as information on upcoming events on their Facebook page. If you want to become a volunteer mentor, contact your local club so that you can be cleared with a background check and TB test. There are other ways to contribute, too. “As a matter of fact,” said Mr. Ward, “That foosball table you see over there was donated to us about a month ago. A parent called us and specifically said they wanted to donate to the West Modesto Club, so they gave us their information and I rode out with another employee of mine and we picked it up from them ourselves. by Jim Christiansen Summer about over, most students back in school. Time to look at what’s fashionable and going on in art after Labor Day. Last month I spent a four-day working vacation showing and selling art at the Old-Fashioned Bluegrass Festival in San Benito County Historical Park near Hollister. Met quite a few friends and fans of my art from the 209, getting out of the smoke and heat. The park itself is an interesting eclectic artistic historical collection to experience. August Art Walk opened with the Mistlin Gallery 3rd Annual Art Festival, that runs through October 5. Nicole Slater won Best of Show, with her painting “World on a String.” Worthy of the distinction. Carrie Arnold, Dan Petersen, David Schroeder, among the other prize winners. Show open all month. While I was there, had to choose among my friends for the People’s Choice award. Favorites of mine, the Strong Together painting in the front room, and Don Hall’s version of himself as Bob Ross. My painting in the show is under Eva Haas “Four Fathers.” I made another selection, but while talking to new ceramics ace Rosemarie Sturgill, Eva’s “Ship of Fools” mosaic sculpture caught my eye, after turning in my voting slip. This month’s featured artist at Barkin Dog is Paige Sawyer, suggested to me by David Boyatt. Her art doesn’t disappoint, and I hope while you’re in for burgers, drinks and music, you’ll take a view. Across the street at Tresetti’s we found the sidewalk all the way to Preservation, artists on the street with art for sale. I’d like to see more of that on the Art Walk trail. Jennifer and I were introducing friends to Art Walk and the downtown Modesto music scene, so we were a little late for the Tri-Chromatic Gallery’s “I Give You All my Breath” performance.

On our way to Chartreuse Muse, we noticed FASM’s mural addition to the North front wall. The Emergence show has ended, so new Muse works up this month. Near 9 pm, I stopped in just in time at Ralston’s Goat. Phil Murillo art is everywhere there, but I got a chance to meet a first time showing artist, Ryann J Hall, and her interesting digital art. New artists are always fun to find on art walk, and I do get asked how to exhibit work. Check the venues on the art walk map and look for Calls for Artists. Stanislaus Brewing is looking for art. Corbin Cash Sweet Potato Spirits: from Ground to Glass by Brandilyn Brown and Christopher Mitchell
The Souza family have been established farmers since 1917, now entering its fifth generation of farmers. The Souzas are big into creating jobs, wanting to revitalize agriculture by pulling young people in to create life-long careers out of farming. They encourage change and love new ideas, often collaborating with UC Merced to achieve this. Growing rye and sweet potatoes, already a rotatable crop, David decided spirits was the specialty niche to break into when the farm became his. With the freshest ingredients and knowledge from all his years of farming, it was a match made in fermentable heaven. Traditionally, vodka is made from white potatoes; which contain more sugar than sweet potatoes, meaning you need less white potatoes than sweet potatoes to make alcohol. Sweet Potatoes are lower on the glycemic index, which is great for people with diabetes, not so great for distillers. That didn’t stop Dave from turning his unique idea into a delicious reality, though. He had to formulate special enzymes to break down the sugars in the potatoes, in a process that took 1.5 years to perfect. Even after the new enzymes were introduced, it still takes over 10 pounds of sweet potatoes to make one bottle of Corbin Cash. The unique thing about Corbin Cash that we truly loved, is that Dave is involved in the entire process. He’s there when the seeds are planted,

he’s there at harvest, he’s there for washing and boxing, he’s there when it’s fermenting and distilling, he’s there when it’s bottled and sold. He won’t take full credit though, he humbly told us it takes over 50 people to make one bottle of Corbin Cash. When you enjoy your cocktail, you are holding the work of machinists, planters, harvesters, forklift drivers- there are so many people involved! We encourage you to think about that the next time you buy produce. We have a deep appreciation for the sweet potato that we did not have before the tour. So the sweet potatoes are planted, harvested, eaten by enzymes, and turned into delicious alcohol in a long arduous process. Just when you think the process is done, it’s not! Then all the water used in the distilling process is put back into the field, to help grow more potatoes. It’s such a beautiful, continuous relationship of suitability and innovation from ground to glass. Once he had a reliable recipe, Corbin Cash was formed, named after his son. The sweet potato vodka won a Double Gold in 2011 at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and a Double Gold at the 2013 Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America 70th Annual Convention & Exposition. They treated us to a full spirit tasting after the tour, complete with a food pairing. Each sample and snack produced a harmony of flavor. From savory to sweet, your tastebuds will thank you for the ride. Although our favorite of their spirits was the sweet potato liqueur, it was a tough decision to make. Neither of us are fans of gin, yet we’ve each indulged in a Corbin Cash gin and tonic this week, enjoying every sip! The sweet potato gave each spirit (aside from the rye, of which sweet potatoes are absent) a tantalizing lingering sweet heat that leaves you craving more. September 11 is a date that everyone remembers. Today, we remember and think about what our community needs. When I stepped into the Fired Up Grill & Meal Prep in Ceres California this past Sunday, I got all fired up! The decorum inside is incredible! There are TV’s everywhere and the bar is a lovely focal point. I was pleasantly greeted by two of the friendliest waitresses. Shortly after, the two restaurant owners, Gia Clark-Smith and Mike Ferriera arrived at my table. Each of them exuded a kind of gentleness that was so thick in the atmosphere, that most anyone could feel it. An overload of bright sunshine and smiles, mixed with pure happiness filled the air, and in that very moment, the two of them made me feel as though I was sitting with my own family. The friendship that Gia and Mike share, makes restaurant guests feel right at home upon entrance. They each have a particularly mellow way about themselves and their “way” makes you feel warm and welcomed. As I stated earlier, the decorum is phenomenal! Both Gia’s husband, Sincere, and Mike’s wife, Ashley, stand proudly beside them. In fact, while Gia did the decorating, Mike and Sincere did all the labor, including, laying out the spectacular flooring. Gia and Mike met while attending an exercise boot camp. Each of them had a 4:00 a.m. workout and they often ended up conversing about life goals. Mike shared with Gia that he had a dream of opening his own restaurant and he wanted to incorporate his “meal prep” (that he had included during the boot camp), for a team competition. Turns out, Mike was on the win-
Fired Up Grill - All Fired Up ning team and by the end of the contest, (thanks to his meal prep), he had lost a whopping 103 pounds in only 6 months! Gia was looking to add something new to her happy life. She is a nurse and the CEO of numerous hospitals. After their conversation, Mike quit his job within only 2 days! He and Gia hashed out an agreement, and the rest is history! The meat at Fired Up Grill smokes daily from 4 to 16 hours and is seasoned to perfection! Oh, and if you worry about your salt intake, there is no need, because Mike uses Himalayan pink salt, combined with his other genius seasonings, making the meat’s flavor all the more exceptional. There are so many meal choices to choose from in the restaurant, so Gia presented me with a sample of almost every dish. I had fall-offthe-bone pork spare ribs, beef ribs, and pulled pork. The icing on the cake, (so to speak), was the restaurant’s house barbecue sauce. It comes in three different flavors, ranging from mild to extremely hot. The first is simply called, “House Sauce.” The second is, “Fire Sauce,” and the spiciest of them all is, “Habanero 3 Alarm.” Whew, now that’s hot!

The feast I enjoyed made me feel like I was in my late Grandma Dorothy’s kitchen! Yum! Fired Up Grill serves beer on tap from local craft breweries such as Blaker Brewing, Indigeny Reserve, and Dust Bowl Brewery. Mike and Gia enjoy supporting our local community and it seems that our community cannot get enough of them either! Our city will be spinning with all things design, September 16-22, with the new Modesto Architecture & Design Week (MADWEEK). Cities across the globe - from Barcelona to Buenos Aires, Vancouver to Vienna, Copenhagen to Cape Town, Shanghai to San Francisco – all host design weeks to elevate the education, understanding, and connection of people with design. Design weeks celebrate the value and potential of design to advance creativity, economic opportunity, innovation, and overall quality of life. Since 2008, Modesto has been host to the award-winning Modesto Architecture Festival that has attracted as many as 5,000 people annually to our city. As the festival celebrated it’s 10th anniversary last year, it has now evolved into the Modesto Architecture and Design Week (MADWEEK), broadening its focus beyond architecture alone to include all design disciplines, including: architecture, fashion design, graphic design, interior design, landscape architecture, product design, social design, and user experience (UI/UX) design. The new MADWEEK celebrates architecture and design as both an art and a science, and heightens public awareness of architecture and design and of the value that architects and designers play in creating more beautiful, creative, innovative and livable communities. MADWEEK is a collaborative effort between the Modesto Art Museum, the American Institute of Architects Sierra Valley (AIASV), Modesto Design Collective (MO.DE), the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) California Sierra Chapter, and many other community partners and sponsors. “Modesto has a rich and remarkable heritage of design, innovation and invention dating back to the 1800s and continuing over nearly 150 years across all areas, industries and sectors of Modesto and across all design disciplines,” says Lee Davis, founder of the Modesto Design Collective (MO.DE). “MADWEEK is about celebrating our unique design heritage and demonstrating the value and vibrancy of design today in our city.” As Modesto approaches its sesquicentennial in 2020, our local design community is a powerful ally in envisioning the future of our city. MADWEEK 2018 will be seven days of over 30 creative and inspiring events in venues across the City of Modesto, from Sunday, September 16th through Saturday, September 22nd. The MADWEEK 2018 schedule includes a myriad of events designed to inspire, including exhibits, family & kids day, films, networking events, speakers, studio visits, tours, workshops, and more.

EDUCATION School’s back from summer! We couldn’t return to a new school season without speaking to one of the largest financial backers of education in Central California. The Mary Stuart Rogers Foundation donates money to universities, all the way down to elementary schools and everything in between. Personally, I was excited to interview John Rogers, the President of the foundation to finally ask him about the business building at California State University, Stanislaus. As a business alumna from CSUSTAN, my classes were inside the Mary Stuart Rogers building, and I always wondered why the business building held this ubiquitous name. Though this article will not delve into the organization nor its founder, John’s mother, much. It’s important to mention Mary Stuart Roger had a vision to empower youth through education; when she passed the baton to John it was a no brainer to donate a substantial amount of money to CSUSTAN for the business building. John has done countless interviews of the foundation and its origins; we decided to approach philanthropy and insight into the nonprofit from a different angle. We wanted to understand the mindset of a philanthropist and a president of a successful nonprofit. John was asked the question, what a person needs to do to be able to help others the way the foundation does. Fulfillment is the drive

goals to make it, you also need to sustain the goals. There will be road-blocks on the way and it doesn’t mean you will get wealthy, but you must use your talents. Everyone has talents and it’s our responsibility to use our talents with others who have the same interest so that they too can sustain themselves; “Time, talent, and treasures is the name of the game”. How do we start looking for what can bring us fulfillment? Education is the foundation to find self-fulfillment because when you’re in an educational environment you have opportunities to see what’s out there. You can’t just go to school to go to school, have a goal and find your niche. This doesn’t mean you have to stay with your goals, always be willing to be flexible. Be willing to bend them and follow your conscience but most importantly, follow your dream. Be flexible with your goals but keep focused in the time

Will Wong: Managing Our Water By Chris Murphy One of the best things about Modesto is that we do business with our friends and many of the people we know and enjoy, run our local business and manage some of our most vital resources. Will is a great friend to all that he knows and loves Modesto and his neighborhood. This is key as he really knows what it means to work hard to make our city better for the future. Most people just think about utilities as their electricity, water and sewer, but so much more of this is about designing systems for the future. Water is top of mind right now as our community fights the State Water board so that our community and agriculture and thrive. Water is the first word in our city motto. It is precious and we can’t waste a drop. It takes innovation, creativity and change of habits, William Wong has been doing this for quite some time and he is now the Director of the City of Modesto Utilities department. Will was raised in Modesto, attending Davis High and UC Davis. He is one of the ones that came back live with his wife and kids and make our community better. Let’s get to know Will a bit more and find out some of the cool things he and the city are working on. ModestoView: What did you want to be when you were growing up here in Modesto? Will Wong: Growing up on a small orchard in north Modesto, I was always interested in taking things apart, seeing what made it work, and then putting them back together. I was also naturally inclined to math and science, and loved problem solving, so I guess my destiny was to be an engineer. MV: What inspired you when you were growing up? WW: My parents. Both were immigrants that came to the US to make a better life for themselves. Understanding their sacrifices, struggles and being raised with their work ethic helped me be the person I am today. MV: Why utilities? How did you find this passion? WW: I first got interested in water engineering at UC Davis. I had a class project that required us to design a wastewater treatment plant for a community. I found it fascinating how we can take sewage and build a facility with equipment that could clean it up. It was like putting puzzle

pieces together, and it totally clicked for me after that. After graduating in 1993, my first job was with a company in Austin, Texas that designed and made equipment for both water and wastewater plants. That experience helped me get a job with the City of Modesto in 2001 and I have been planning, designing and constructing water-related projects ever since. MV: Water is a finite thing here on earth, and many are fighting over it, what is Modesto doing that will be a game changer? WW: Modesto has been very progressive in being great stewards of our water resources. We are starting a One Water Modesto initiative to help build public awareness of the importance of water in Modesto. It’ll be a proactive approach to engage our ratepayers on how the City is bringing our water “full circle”. The City partnered with Modesto Irrigation District to construct a water treatment plant at Modesto Regional Water Treatment Plant. Using treated Tuolumne River water conjunctively with the City’s groundwater has been an incredible benefit to our aquifer, allowing the City to “bank” unused groundwater over the years. This banked groundwater help Modesto get through the recent 4-year drought and our aquifer is still in good shape. The city was able to do this with active water management. In addition, the City has been able to bring our water full circle. We are very proud that City is now in the recycled water business. With the North Valley Regional Recycled Water Program, Modesto is now selling recycled water,
which comes from our homes, businesses and industries, to the Del Puerto Water District. The North Valley project is a regional effort to address water shortages in the area. Modesto is able to deliver almost 15 million gallons of recycled water per day to the district. Turlock is about to embark on their portion of the project. When it’s complete, the project will deliver up to 27 million gallons per day of recycled water. The North Valley project is one of the largest beneficial water reuse projects in the county. WW: Absolutely, Over 10 years ago, no one really wanted even considered using “treated wastewater”; there was a “eww” factor with that. However, recycled water has to meet very stringent Federal and State requirements. In fact, recycled water is cleaner than what we see in river. If you think back to when we were kids learning about the water cycle (evaporation, precipitation, transpiration, etc…) all water on the planet is recycled at some point. With the drought and the scarcity of water, everyone’s sense of water became heightened, and the importance of water, in whatever form, became a potential source. In fact, recycled water is considered “new water”. Now, people are seeing recycled water as another resource. MV: What advice would you give to the regular homeowner to help them conserve and

make a difference. WW: Conservation is a new way of life in California, Water is a finite resource, and all of us should do our part to ensure water is available in the future. The City has designed its sewer and wastewater treatment system to meet current and future demands. MV: What does Water, Wealth, Contentment and Health mean to you? WW: Our forefathers were really forward thinking when they decided this motto (over the first place “Nobody’s Got Modesto’s Goat”). They recognized the importance of water in our region. It’s a great reminder that the City was built to support our most important industry: Agriculture. Without water, there is no Modesto. MV: Tell us something about the City of Modesto Utilities department that people might not know. WW: The City has a dedicated and hardworking personnel that ensures that all residents receive essential water and sewer service 24/7, 365 days a year. MV: Describe your ideal day in Modesto? WW: Being able to get through all my emails! Actually, my ideal day is being able to resolve issues with my Utilities Department co-workers and help our customers out. MV: If you could ask Modestans to do one thing that will make our community better, what would it be? WW: Be civil to each other. Treat everyone the way you want to be treated. Do you live a life without limits? Do you often think about what that means? Can you imagine a world where disabilities didn’t stop anyone from living a rewarding, happy and productive life? United Cerebral Palsy has had a center here for 30 years. UCP’s adult day centers in Modesto and Turlock work hard every day to create lives without limits for its members. Cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injuries, mobility injuries, autism and many other disabilities of other diagnosis can pause lives, but UCP is making sure those pauses are short. Only 20% of their members are affected by cerebral palsy; they assist anyone affected by mobility issues, regardless of the biological cause. Every day they hope to enrich the lives of their members by giving them independence--the kind you and I take for granted every day. Many of us have daily opportunities to make memories, make money,
make new friends, and experience something new. Can you imagine NOT having those experiences every day? The staff at UCP strive to create stimulating environments to benefit members and encourage them to try something new. Aside from the day program, and their job placement programs, they have a program called Expanding Horizons, which is devoted to (you guessed it!) expanding one’s horizons! By integrating something new in to the lives of their members, bridging the gap between mundane and exciting, makes every day an adventure. Recent trips include bowling, visiting parks and beaches, volunteering efforts, going to San Francisco and taking the ferry to Alcatraz, and even camping. The annual camping trip is a very fun event that members truly look forward to. UCP has partnered with Tuolumne Trails, who have adapted common outdoor camp shenanigans like hiking and swimming for anyone to enjoy, regardless of physical limitations! MAMA MAMA Season is Upon Us By Middagh Goodwin It is once again that time of year; it is MAMA season. This year there were over 500 nominees in 20 plus categories to be considered for nominations. At the beginning of July, emails were sent out to previous years winners and other, area promoters, music writers and venue owners. We also reached out online asking for submissions from performers and fans alike. The MAMA board tries to pay attention to who is making waves, who is the up in comers are and which bands/performers are out playing on a regular basis. Each year it gets a little harder to narrow down the Top 10. The First MAMA Awards Show was hosted at Club Maxx in the year 2000, and it was packed and featured only seven categories. How things have changed in the last 19 years. Since the start of the MAMAs, several new categories have been added or better defined, and a few have been retired at least for the time being. Voting is currently Live at www.modestoareamusic.com and we want you all to take a moment to look over each category before casting your vote. Once you have hit, submit there is no going back and changing your vote or submitting one in a category you forgot. I personally encourage everyone to go and check out the MAMAnees, go to a venue you have never been to and catch some live music or comedy. Check out the nominees online and then go see them playing a stage near you. You will have tons of opportunities, and many venues/promoters organize MAMAnee showcases. These showcases give you an excellent chance to see several nominees in one evening. You are the academy; your votes will determine who the winners will be. Voting will continue until 11:59 pm October 14th, so you have time to make an informed decision.

By Earl Matthews Hello everyone and welcome to the end of summer! Let’s get into this months Blues shows. Finishing out this seasons run of Sunday Blues and BBQ’s at the Hotel Ledger is Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood. Hotel Ledger is an excellent spot, and I highly recommend you bring your swimsuit. On Wednesday the 5th I will be hosting a Blues Jam at Fired Up Grill in Ceres. Sign-ups start at 7:30 pm. Then on the 6th, you can head out to Garlic Brothers in Stockton for the Thirsty Thursday Jam Hosted by Jeramy Norris. On the 13th you can check out Jeramy Norris again at Black Oak Casino in Tuolumne. It’s a phenomenal room and a lovely drive, well worth your effort. I’m going to suggest you take a little trip on the 14th up to our state capital, Sacramento for a visit to the Crest Theater to see Kenny Wayne Shepherd. He has a string of hits, has several Grammy nominations and is one hell of a guitar player. There are a couple of cool events on the 22nd. You can head out to the LBGC fest and check out the B-4 Dawn band Featuring Terrie Londee for some funk, soul, blues and rock. Or you can head over to St. Stanislaus School for their annual carnival and check out Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame along with a bunch of other acts. Boz Scaggs is coming to the Gallo Center on the 23rd. Boz is a Grammy award-winning singersongwriter and guitar player who had his album “Lowdown” hit number 2 on the Billboard top
200. I have never seen him live, but I have heard that he puts on a hell of a show. Lastly is a really special event celebrating John Blacks 65th birthday. It’s called “Rockin’ on the River Deuces Wild Rock’N’Blues Music Festival” at Del Rio Vista Garden. JB has a killer lineup including the Alameda All Stars, Jimmy Dewrance & Friends, Bill Clifton’s Chicken and Whisky Band (of MOFO Party Band Fame) and Chuck Bradley & The Dame Liers. I’m going to feature JB on my first ever video companion to this column which should be out by the time you are reading this. Check for it on Modesto Views FB page. Volunteer for Hope Haven West The View went on an amazing mission to Mongolia to deliver wheelchairs in July and now you can get involved too. Every few months, Hope Haven West has a wheelchair distribution in different countries. There are two opportunities coming up that you might want to check out. Volunteers pay their own way but it is absolutely worth it. You will feel so much pride about giving the gift of mobility. Nest trips are in Veracruz Mexico on Sept 22-30 and October 11-21. As John Lee Hooker said in song “nobody gets out of these Blues alive.” Aretha Franklin the Queen of Soul has passed. There are milestones and memories and everyone has where they first heard something that changed their lives. I was in 6thgrade playing basketball listening to the Beatles on a boom box and James Sollomen came over and put in a cassette of James Brown “Get on the Good Foot.” And that same year I, and a childhood friend were listening to his
older brother’s record collection, Temptations meet the Supremes, Jimmie Hendrix, and then he put on Aretha pounding out some Gospel tune and wailing over the refrain. That was my introduction to Aretha and have listened to and have most of her things on vinyl that I still play. Do I have a favorite tune, No there are too many to choose from? From her early Gospel gems to the hits she played the gamut of Soul music band Ultra Lounge, Johnny Valdes guitar, Tim from ballads to Blues. Hello, hello, hello. This month’s confession: I’m an eavesdropper. Here is what I’ve heard at local shows: “I can’t believe they’re charging a cover. I mean, I could see if this was a comedy club, but...” ARRGH!!! Just about every show in the 209 has at least one performer who has appeared at clubs. Even if there is a cover, you still save by not driving or paying for parking. Plus, comedy shows are magic. There is something about watching a live show that just gets people talking in real life and making friends. It makes me so happy to see people staying after the shows to talk to the performers and to each other. You just don’t see that very often. Support local venues and performers--there’s stuff going on you can’t get from TV. Also, 209 comedy audiences: y’all have the reputation for being attentive and ready to laugh. Thanks to those of you who regularly come out. We appreciate you. Comedy is really growing here in the 209. There are shows from Merced to Lodi and and lots of spots in between. There are new comedy open mics at Finnegans in Stockton and Fired Up Grill in Ceres. Winter’s Tavern in Sonora is starting a monthly comedy showcase.

Of course there are the standbys of Cheroot, Famiglia Bistro and St. Stan’s Brewing in Modesto, the Outpost Saloon in Waterford, Strings in Manteca, Pizza Factory in Turlock...I apologize if I missed anyone, but what I’m trying to say is: the 209 has more comedy shows than ever, do yourself a favor and check one out. Whew! Glad I got this off my chest! This month’s video interview is with Anthony K. Anthony is from Ceres and on September 7 he will be the first local comedian to headline at the Gallo Center. It’s quite an achievement and I’m excited to get to talk to him before this big day. He’s not only a hilarious comic who can make a crowd laugh like no other, he’s a nice guy, too. Hope you got your tickets to the show-I know I’ll have mine. The continuing story: I had a lot to get off my chest this month--I’ll be back with the continuing saga next month...promise...I totally don’t have writer’s block or anything...

FIT The Stride is Right by Efren Martinez Some run, others jog and some like to stride. Why not? It’s a healthy alternative to keep moving if running or jogging isn’t your thing. I guess striding isn’t really nothing new, it’s just a fancier way to say “walking”. Although some might say I’m more of a runner than a strider, I too enjoy striding along with the best of them. Doing so allows me to get my heart rate up to a healthy beat and also meet a very important age group in our society, our Seniors. For me striding with seniors serves a double duty workout. I not only get the heart health fitness I need, I also get the knowledgeable enlighten of so many life experiences through delightful conversations. During my time at the YMCA many years ago I’d spend the day working out, lifting weights and teaching Pilates. When I wasn’t lifting weights or teaching a Pilates class, I would visit with many of my senior friends and talk about
their own past life experiences. I was a listener knowing that I could learn a great deal from those who’ve walked several different paths in life and perhaps even try to avoid some roads that lead to unhappier times and beliefs in our Nation’s history. No matter your age, most of us can stride like the rest to help keep up our mobility and healthy lifestyle going. On Friday, September 7th, I’d like to invite you to join me for The Modesto Rotary Senior Fun Walk at East La Loma Park. They will have prizes, raffles, gifts and music by The Quake Mobile DJ to cater to the atmosphere. Most importantly you will have the opportunity to meet and greet a bunch of people who might just be seniors. Registration begins at 7:45 am, and the walk starts at 8:00 am. ALL AGES I Am Sofia

I am Sofia Johnson, the newest editor of the all ages column. I am so excited to share a new perspective on all of the fun that goes on in this wonderful town we live in! But before that I want to talk a little about myself. As you may know, the former editor, Leia Johnson, is my older sister/biggest role model and I am so honored to have to opportunity to follow her footsteps. I am currently a sophomore at Thomas Downey High School and I just recently joined the JV water polo team. Watching and being in school sports is a great way to be actively involved. Whether it’s your own school, your future school, or you are supporting as an alumni, showing your support and school spirit is always appreciated. The fall sports that are happening right now include, football, water polo, girls tennis, girls golf, cross country and volleyball. The schedules for each can be found on any Modesto city schools website and there is a special high school football schedule in this issue. Another exciting program that Modesto City Schools offers is the amazing theater and arts programs. Downey will be putting on Alice in Wonderland and the Sound of Music this year. I will go into further detail as that comes

With school starting only a few weeks ago we must remember all of the ways we can stay actively involved. ZEN The Purpose of Knowledge By Mary Layton Knowledge is a little like food, you can stuff yourself indiscriminately with empty facts or you can be selective and choose what kind of knowledge you want to feed yourself with that will leave you
enriched. What is problematic is ignorance, the absence of knowledge. Ignorance is the root of prejudice. The lack of knowledge will keep a person from understanding different cultures and races. This promotes fear. We fear what we don’t understand. Lack of knowledge impedes progress. It also can get you into trouble; being in the dark about things will make you stumble or fall in more than one way. Lack of knowledge is dangerous to yourself as well as to everyone around you. Not knowing how and why people feel and act the way they do creates disharmony. The ability to cooperate is based on understanding people and achieving something together. Gathering knowledge empowers us and gives us confidence. We can act based on what we know and get the results we are looking for. Academic knowledge, for the most part, will allow you to get a better job. Social knowledge will allow you to make friends and allies. Knowledge of the wilderness will help you survive in the wild. Knowledge of nutrition and health can assist you to change bad habits. Knowledge is at our fingertips today, we can go to school or study using computers - there are infinite modes of learning. Downtown Modesto Sampler
The Downtown Sampler returned last year and was a big hit. A couple of thousand people came to downtown and walked stroll and rode their bikes to nearly 30 restaurant, cafes and bars to sample what they had to offer. 10 Bands several of them were Modesto 10TH STREET PLAZA • MODESTO Area Award Winners, were placed strategically throughout the Sampler footprint with two wandering minstrels playing in random locations over the evening. As you can imagine it was such a hit, it had to come back again. Make plans to come to Downtown Modesto on October 2nd, 5:30-9 pm and partake in a Modesto Tradition the 18th Annual Sampler, enjoy some delicious savoury and sweet treats from over 25 spots, live music with 2000 of your friends.
