going as fast as it is, that means that there is so much going on that the time space continuum that we call Modesto USA is rockin’ and rollin’. The even better part is that I talk to a lot of people who also feel that way, maybe because that are planning and creating events that make our city come alive and be special. Whether you are young, old, local or a visitor, the Modesto area calendar is packed. As we get into the Labor Day weekend, we get into gear, running, chasing and sprinting forward. One thing that it is so important about any community is to know where you came from so you know where to go. It is really true that to plan your future, develop your brand, you need to know what you are made of, who built it, and why many things happened. It is your story and every journey starts with an authentic story. It is more important than ever that we make learning and experiencing our history fun, to all ages and get more people involved in telling our story. We need ambassadors of all ages that know the good, so that we spread more good messages. This month, we take you back to the 20s and 30s as the golden age embraced Modesto, when the theatres were built, the arts were strong and we built the foundation of what Modesto is today. From the founding fathers of Modesto, to the visionaries that built the cities to the innovators that will take us into the future, there is something to we can learn from all of this and hope this next generation will absorb our history to take us forward. On thing for sure, it is really easy to get out and about in Modesto. It is pretty easy to lead a healthy life. We have an abundance of healthy food, bikes and trails and a really walkable downtown. This month, we are going to focus on heart health, stopping Alzheimer’s and make strides against breast cancer. We can all do this together and we hope to see you out at one of the walks. Don’t forget there is a Senior Stride too. So take a walk, ride your bike and explore. With all of the great restaurants downtown, like the new Food Fix Butcher & Baker, you don’t need to have a plan, just head downtown, and you will find some-

Thank you so very much to the American Legion and Dick Hagerty for the honor of being named Citizen of the Year. It is something I will truly treasure and accept the responsibility to continue to be involved and try to make a positive different in our community. Thanks so much to my wife Becky, my family and friends that are so very supportive. I love you all. thing to do, somewhere to eat, something to watch or listen to, every night of the week. We have this Modesto. It you are a Beatle fan, like I am, you will have a great month with some really special musical experiences with the Modesto Symphony Picnic at the Pops, performing with the Classical Mystery Tour and later in the month, a unique multi-media live performance Stroll Down Penny Lane at the State Theatre. But whatever you do, let’s keep it local. We have great locally owned businesses that need us. I saw a great internet post that read, “Shop local, because Amazon won’t sponsor your kid’s soccer team”. This is so true. We love the businesses that advertise in ModestoView as they are the ones that think and live local so please check them out. We love our community, our friends and our opportunities to work together.

Thank you all for reading and being the people that charge up our batteries and make us better. #modestousa #gloriousmodesto With gratitude, Chris Murphy Publisher & Founder ModestoView

BEATLES VIEW

By Chris Murphy

There is really nothing more magical than a Beatle song. You may not know this, but I am a

Beatle fan. I have even been to Liverpool and have walked Penny Lane, been to Strawberry Fields and to the site of the former Cavern Club. It is truly a sacred place along with the Abbey Road crossing. The songs really come to life when you have actually seen the places that inspired the songs. There are 2 amazing Beatle events in Modesto this month. Beatles songs get even better when they are played by someone who really loves the music and has created a multi-media show that brings Penny Lane to life. Joe Anastasi is the visionary behind the successful Penny Lane Experience show and has assembled an outstanding band of musicians, an animator, and a video artist to create a unique concert experience featuring 25 different films coordinated with the songs that are played above the band. How did this come to be? As a kid, Joe would listen through the

walls to his sister’s records by Leslie Gore and others and then he heard the Beatles and it was magic! During college he learned guitar and and went to Wall Street setting his guitar aside until he went to a Paul McCartney show in 2002. It brought it all back. He started a podcast in the early days and it lead to a show with the full arrangement and then teamed up with film experts and fellow musicians that shared his vision. I asked Joe how he feels when playing a Beatles song like You Never Give Me Your Money? First time I played through the song, it was “holy crap, I’m doing this Beatles song! It is like an epiphany when the vocals and harmonies come together”. I

quizzed him about his “moment” during the show, where say to yourself, this is the best part. Joe said “There are a couple, but in the song1985 on the outro, we really build it up and it is a highlight. There are a couple of moments that when you mix the story and the song they get so personal that it brings people to tears. You can experience these feelings in person when the Penny Lane Experience comes to the State Theatre on September 28 at 7 pm. If you even slightly like the Beatles, this is an event not to miss.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s

Breast Cancer

The first Alzheimer’s survivor is out there somewhere. This is without doubt the cruelest disease ever and there is no time to delay in working on a solution and this walk helps raises valuable funds for research and support. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks raise awareness and funds to save lives from breast cancer. Each event is a noncompetitive 5-mile walk that brings people together to make a difference for everyone who has been touched by breast cancer. The events raise money to fund innovative research, provide free information and support, and to help people reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it’s most treatable. From the opening ceremony to the postwalk entertainment, a Making Strides event is a celebration of survivors and opportunity to remember loved-ones lost. ART VIEW Dog Days of Summer By Jim Christiansen It’s the Dog Days of Summer, even if billed as the Central California Art Association Autumn Art Festival, and artist Eva Hass making the best of it, with “Dog in Yellow Sweater” as the Best of Show Award at Mistlin Gallery. Chella won four awards in this juried event. Bill Harris first in photography with Bicycle homage “Coral.” Other winners include Anna Barber, Nicole Slater, Aaron Buttram, Brian Paris, Randy Crimmel, Karen Kingsley. Drop in at Mistlin Gallery to look up other winners, and the rest of the show. Diane Sorenson won the “People’s Choice” award, for “Wanna Play?” one her 3d Dragon constructions. Show will be up for September Art Walk, and that’s a good time to check in with Mistlin Gallery, Chartreuse Muse and Dragonfly Art for Life for Fall Classes. Michael Haack is the featured artist at Barkin Dog Grill. His very involved draw-

ings take a while to look at and already pretty popular with patrons. Take an hour or so for lunch to really see where these inventive machines come from before the show comes down. Patrick Barr is up for September Art Walk. He leads classes at Dragonfly Art for Life, is known for his caricature and cartoon portraits. Get a map for Art Walk at Downtown Improvement District office. www.modestoartwalk.com A favorite spot has been the sidewalk artists set up at 11th and J. These artists set up a one night show each month, with a quick set up, high hopes and talent, in a spot that includes Tresetti’s, Preservation Coffee, and near Beads of Contentment. After posting some photos on Facebook, I was reminded to put a shout out to those dedicated artists actually out on the sidewalk corner, where I don’t always get the names, or clear photos of their work in the dimming light. One, who can be seen with her vibrant, black light friendly paintings is Alana Juanita Mayhew, and we’ve featured some of her paintings in previous columns without attribution. She’s going places, including planned shows in San Francisco January 2, at the Spark Art

Gallery in the Castro, after recently showing at the Summer Spark Art Park Celebration. Alana will be doing some classes near downtown soon. Other Artist regulars are Done Lee, Nicklous Hunt, Irene Gomez. Amy Anna Soto noted an event, “Building for the Future” September 14 at 800 Rose Avenue, 11 to 4 pm. This is a vendor event, includes art, jewelry, hand made and other merchandise in the mix. Kristy Moore let me know that the Black HeArts Market at Queen Bean is on hiatus this month, to resume in October. Irene Hooper-Gomez let me know that Third Thursday this month will coincide with Artists also showing at McHenry Village for the annual “Taste of McHenry Village” event. Artists will be over by the wine booth, similar timing to Art Walk downtown. If you’d like to show either at McHenry Village, or as one of the sidewalk artists, look up Irene on Facebook for more information. Don’t miss the End of Summer Art Bash at the Tri-Chromatic Gallery on September 7 from 2 – 7 pm with some cool one of a kind offerings, merch packs, lessons and so much more. Don’t miss out on the variety of art we have in our community. Left, Top to Bottom Eva Yates, Aaron Buttram, bicycle by Bill Harris and Karen Kingsley

BREW VIEW by Christopher Mitchell and Brandilyn Brown

LoFi and Chill

Christopher and I went on the recent DoMo Prohibition Pub Crawl and one of the stops on the crawl was the new LoFi bar on J Street. Being a new bar, we had not yet had the pleasure of having a drink there. We each ordered a Hemingway Daiquiri (which is still on the menu!) created with rum, maraschino, grapefruit and lime and truly enjoyed the cocktail before we moved to the next location. We couldn’t stop thinking about that drink though and knew we had to go back! We met up with owner Lauren Jamieson, who told us the bar’s theme is a musical reference-a place to come chill, relax, and take a load off. The theme carries through the old school record and sheet music décor. Lauren is a Modestan, but recently spent 10 years in New Orleans, and opened LoFi purposefully with a New Orleans flair and hospitality. We felt it the moment we walked in-greeting with a smile, a cup of water and some snack mix. Drinking is very much a social event, and LoFi is all about community. “We want our patrons to know no one is excluded from that feeling of community,” Lauren says. “We want everyone to be comfortable and enjoy a break from the day with a drink. We can find you a drink you will truly enjoy.” You can absolutely feel her love of music, history and libations when you hang out here. The process of spirits, and the evolution of drinking inspires her menus. One of her obsessions is gin: the fact that any clear alcohol containing juniper can be gin is fascinating, as you can find gin with so many other ingredients to compliment juniper like citrus, sea kelp, florals-Gin ingredients really run the gamut and she provides a huge selection of gins for any cocktail mix you could want. “The thing about this industry is you are always learning-there is always something new,

8

or something we can revisit from history, through innovation or creativity; you cannot be bored in this industry. If you are, it is your own fault,” she says, and we agree-the current menu (which will change 3 times a year) features drinks from three eras: Pre-prohibition, prohibition, and postprohibition. We had a drink from each section and can promise that you will not be disappointed in any selection. “I love the direction I can go with LofI-I can literally go any direction I want with drinks, there are no limits to what we can create. While we certainly can make you a traditional gin and fizz, go ahead and get creative. We can introduce you to some great drinks like the Gimlet. I’m confident our bartenders will help you find your new favorite drink.” The next menu will feature drinks name after famous actors and actresses. Her favorite cocktail to make is a martini, but her favorite to drink? The Singapore Sling. And sorry Beatles fans, she’s a Stones girl. Stop in and have a drink today and remember to drink responsibly. Sip on, friends!

There is a new star on 11th St. When we

say star we mean “star”. The great people of Modesto always knew that the food Fix Truck operated by Hank and Ashley Olson is one of our local treasures. Then they were sampled by Chef Alton Brown and then featured on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives with Guy Fieri and the rest of the world learned the Food Fix secret we all knew; great food with everything made in house, innovative tastes and a great solid value that leaves you wanting more. Now Hank and Ashley are bringing the amazing tastes to the 11th St. dining zone. Hank and Ashley have done more than recreate their critically acclaimed Food Fix truck, but have expanded their offerings, baking more of their own bread, and now serve a great line up of beer. The space is beautiful, open and accessible. They have poured their hearts and wallets into the Butcher and Baker and even had a successful Kickstarter campaign and the names of donors are on the chairs and stools. Did I mention that there are a lot of Food Fix fans? The Food Fix crew has a great relationship with their customers, from the Kickstart support to even naming, via an online poll, the Filthy Fix Sandwich. One small thing caught my eye, and you have to be a long time Modesto food fan to understand. One of the menu items is a Sweet & Sour Vinegar Cole Slaw. This is the

10

closest slaw I have found to my old favorite that used to be served at El Faro Mexican restaurant by Luis Fregoso. When I complimented Hank about this, he revealed that he’s “related” to Luis and that many of his dishes are a tribute to him. There is even a stool at the bar, with Luis’ name on the back. I can only hope that someday soon, there may be an “El Faro Pop Up” day. One can dream. But until then, everything that Hank and Ashley makes is top of the class and really filling. One of my favorites is the Filthy Fix, with just the right amount cured pork, mayo, cream cheese, grilled sweet onions and bell peppers, and hot waxed peppers. The fresh baked Bolillo buns take it over the top. It’s amazing. Hank and Ashley are truly a dedicated husband and wife team. They met when he was instructor and her cooking and baking skills, as well as her artistic skills are amazing. The mural of the Food Fix truck is her creation. They were just married when Hank proposed the Food Truck and they worked hard on that. After the TV shows aired, business jumped 500% and never really let off. They have been going full speed ahead creating the Butcher and Baker and in the meantime, managed to have kids and be a family. You can truly see their teamwork in each menu item and when you walk in, the space is light and airy with cool subway tile and even some old school video

games. It can be busy, but here is where the training in the food truck pays off, they are fast. They are used to cooking under pressure and the plates come out beautiful, hot and loaded with side like daily mac and cheese special, and of course house made chips and the slaw. You seriously just need to work down the menu and try them all. Otherwise you will stand there, unable to choose. When I asked Hank what his favorite menu item was, it was a tough call and finally landed on his Porkstrami, something he created as a cooking instructor at Institute of Technology culinary school, when the meat did not arrive for his brisket brine, so Porkstrami was born. And boy are we lucky. The craziest thing he has ever put on the menu came from Ashley when someone asked for a Girl Scout Cookie Cookie so the super decadent Walkie Delight was created as a cookie topped cookie. The other was the 3 Little Pigs which was a combo of Porkstrami, Bacon and Belly. So after we finally made through our Luau Fix, loaded with cured pork, Mayo, Havarti (love this) Grilled Pineapple, Chili Garlic BBQ sauce, Scratch made Pretzel Roll and the Pepper Jacked Club with Turkey, Honey Pepper Bacon, Organic greens and scratch made on Focaccia, along with our sides, our taste buds were just buzzing. If that

weren’t enough, Ashley brought out fresh baked cookies. We sampled the Birthday Cake, The Cinnamon Toast and the Bacon, Chocolate and Butterscotch chip. It is a tasty tour that you need to try. Finally, after we shook off our food coma, I asked Hank; Beatles or Stones? It was a quick Stones. In fact he said “I almost wore my Stones T-shirt today”. Just like the Food Fix truck, you order at the counter and then sit back in a beautiful open space and wait for the deliciousness to arrive. Also, you can eat and run and get your Food Fix to go and wait to come back and linger another day. For now, the Butcher and Baker is open for Lunch hours 11am – 3 pm. Later in September, they will be starting dinner service. Stay tuned to ModestoView and we will keep you posted on that. Evenings on the patio sound great. You can still find the original Food Fix truck at special events and you can book the truck for your own gathering. We know we will see you downtown and hope you enjoy it.

took all of three to four minutes to reach that point, because I happened to be in the dentist’s chair at the time and had just been loaded up with Novocain. What can I say? I had a few minutes to kill, and time management is critical when you’re an air-traffic controller (musical airs.) Michael and his father & brother came through with a walloping fun set honoring the Ronstadt musical legacy all the way back to its roots in Mexico and the southwest. Later, the clan migrated back to my place with a few friends for a late-night jam session. One of the more memorable evenings I’ve had the chance to curate. The older Michael, Linda’s brother, is sadly no longer with us, but Michael G. and his brother Pete will be back in Modesto this month as the Ronstadt Brothers, opening the new season of ‘Sunday Afternoons At CBS.’ Witness the magic at their 3pm matinee on September 8 at Congregation Beth Shalom, 1705 Sherwood Ave. Tickets & more info at www.sundaysatcbs.com. September’s live music schedule at The Dragonfly Art For Life: Friday 9/6, David Finley trio, jamming country, southern rock & blues. Friday 9/13, Zoe Rose, combining country & blues with a bit of punk. Wednesday 9/18, jazz with Alida McKeon & Hunter Burgamy, alumni of the Berklee College of Music. Friday 9/20, Complicated Animals, indie pop blended with Brazilian bossa nova. Friday 9/27, Aireene Espiritu and her trio. Latin & African rhythms, folk, bluegrass, and inspirations from gospel music. Dragonfly concerts run 7:30-9:30 and are $10 cash at door, with extra fees if you’d like to paint while you listen. 1210 J St. in downtown Modesto. Saturday 9/28, the new season of listening concerts at Moon & Sixpence premieres with a vocal recital by Kalea Jackson, fresh off her Valley Talent appearance. She’s been taking her school talent shows by storm the last couple years. Fellow young artists Jack Douglas, Roxy & Roland Carbajal, and Simon Mize will join her for a few songs. 7 PM at 500 9th St. between E & F, $10 admission. Intimate performances. Infinite playlist. Jim Drury

INTER VIEW By Chris Murphy This month, there are a couple of really important walks, fundraisers and other benefit events for health. Besides the Walk for Alzheimer’s, Breast Cancer Walk, the Rotary Senior Stride and there is the Walk for Heart. Heart health has been something I have been focused on since my atrial flutter experience two years ago and it is something that I watch closely. The ModestoView / Sierra Pacific have a walk team this year and we are seeking donations. In addition to this, there is real new innovation here in Modesto, something new that is of national significance. For so many, getting tested for mammograms, or heart disease has been something that takes months to get an exam, lots of doctor red tape and in many cases, is too inconvenient for many. Jim Drury of Modesto has invented a revolutionary way to bring testing to the masses and take it out of the hospital and bring it to public events and even the workplace. His own struggle with heart disease in his family lead Jim to develop an amazing software and deploy it in a mobile clinic. We normally don’t focus on some of these business activities, but this is truly innovative and is being created here in our area and potentially a health care game changer. With manufacturing in Ceres and Patterson, an expert team of developers and medical experts, these mobile clinics are rolling out across the USA. Let’s meet Jim Drury, of Life Saving Images. ModestoView: How did you develop the passion for this? Jim Drury: First hand painful experiences, how health issues can hurt families. That has given me a passion to fight back. My dad died of a heart attack, with no symptoms, when I was 9 years old. I went to school one day, came back and he was dead. I didn’t have a chance to have a beer with my dad, or play golf, or share growing up with him. Three of my family members have breast cancer, discovered in a 3 year time period, 2 of the 3 were late stage. That was the last straw for me. I was angry and still am, that cancer and heart disease hurt so many people, including kids of parents who die. I told my wife, I need to start a company to increase screening, and make it easier to fight back. What good is advanced screening technology when screening rates are declining - why? With what we know now, and the advanced screening technology we have, if my dad was alive today we would have found his silent heart issue before it killed him and we would have fixed it. The same with cancer, which grows steadily and can be found early. I am fighting back for others to provide education and access to more convenient screening, and to include everyone, not just people in certain areas, or with certain insurance, etc. Cancer and heart disease do not discriminate and we cannot either. Those

are the issues that motivate me every day. MV: Why do you think that it is so hard to get the screening and tests that people literally need to survive? JD: Studies show the biggest issue is time, as some screenings at a fixed location can take 2 hours or more and require more time to schedule and take off work. Everyone is busy, and screening is often neglected for years. But with LSI, it takes 10 minutes or less because we eliminate the driving and outdated ways to schedule a screening. When it’s that convenient and fast, almost everyone wants to get screened. Once you have been completely screened for the 6 major cancer risks, diabetes and heart disease, and know your baseline, then its empowering to have the upper hand, and you can enjoy life more fully. With LSI, you can manage screening for all major risks for you and your family on your smart phone, coordinated with your physician. MV: How are these mobile clinics such a game changer? JD: The mobile clinics and our software eliminate all the objections to screening. Let’s look at just one type of the 8 screenings we provide - the heart MIC (Mobile Imaging Clinic). Heart disease is the #1 killer and a threat to all men and women. Our offering started after multiple employees of some very famous Silicon Valley companies died of a heart attack with normal blood pressure and normal cholesterol. They had no symptoms - just like my dad, there was no warning. Their family members found a test developed at UCSF that could have saved these lives. But the test was not used in their case because it was expensive, not covered

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

by insurance, and few centers were equipped to offer it. Mammograms were not covered by insurance for 20 years either. They contacted us, and asked if we could build a mobile imaging clinic, reduce the cost to a price of $150, rather than $1,000 at some providers, and screen in 10 minutes for use at employers and other locations. We agreed to try, and after 2 years of very difficult R&D, we built the world’s first truly mobile 10-minute heart exam, essentially “a mammogram of the heart” for men and women at employers, physician offices, and cities. I can tell you this is a major breakthrough. This test is extremely effective and we are the only provider that can move daily and go to restricted areas like physicians offices. Our timing is perfect, as the American Heart Association recently published new guidelines recommending this test as applicable for intermediate risks, which are the majority of Americans. We have now screened many Apple employees and many others. This is the only screening that costs anything out of pocket, but it’s such a low cost for such a big benefit. We expect to save more than a million lives with this innovation by itself. MV: This is more than just a mobile clinic, it is an integrated software project, how have you found the coders for this and why is the technology so significant? JD: I lived in the Bay Area for 30 years, and have run multiple medical software companies. Its still good to be near the Bay Area, as we were able to hire some very gifted software developers and coders in Silicon Valley, and that gives us a significant competitive advantage. We are employing and training more in the Central Valley now.

MV: Where are these clinics deployed locally? Modesto, 11th and L street, next to the DoubleTree hotel every 2 weeks. Please go to our web sitewww.lifesavingimages. com and enter your email for our newsletter, and screening schedule by zip code. You will see many spots in the Central Valley for screening. New locations and dates are added every day. MV: What is on the near horizon for Lifesaving? Partner with more hospitals and physicians, especially in the Central Valley. One of our brightest and most innovative areas are our partnerships with mid-sized cities. This is an area of significant help for the Central Valley, and cities with a population of 5,000 to 40,000 people. When we partner, screening rates rise, and the benefits of early detection help many people. The cities want to help their citizens. To give back, we give free heart screening to the fire departments and the police departments. They protect us so we need to protect them, and their families. MV: Five years from now what do you hope to have accomplished? JD: To be in all 50 states within 2 years from now, and ideally license our software and services in Europe and other international locations. Cancer, diabetes, and heart disease are big problems everywhere in the world. Our responsibility is to help save as many lives as possible and that means we need to grow. We won’t have accomplished much if we cannot help a lot of people by attacking the problem and continuing to grow. We hope to be a large employer and a public company someday. We want to treat our employees well and make sure we are compassionate and helpful to our patients, to provide education and a path to real help. MV: Besides working hard on this project, what do you enjoy most about living in the Modesto area? JD: Living in the Modesto area has been great! It’s the simple life, and I enjoy the super friendly people. I think there is great opportunity in Modesto and great community pride. My personal goal, like many people I have met here, is to help Modesto and the greater area here in the Central Valley any way we can. I feel comfortable here. People care about the community. As the Modesto View shows so well, there is a lot to do here, and if you can’t find it already, you can more easily organize it here, or find someone with a similar interest. The people I meet here are very down to earth people, and are fun to be around. To find out more about Lifesaving Images, please check out http://lifesavingimages. com/

“Mai Tai-Roa Ae”

which translates to “Out of this World — The Best” August 30 was the 75th Anniversary of the Mai Tai. Invented by “Trader” Vic Bergeron at his bar, then named Hinky Dinks on San Pablo Ave in Oakland, the MaiTai became the torch bearer of the Tiki movement through the 40s, 50s and still today. In fact, the Tiki culture is growing with many new Tiki bars opening all over the world. However, the legendary MaiTai has become a generic name for any kind of pineapple orange juice and rum, something that a cruise ship would serve, so beware. But friends, the original MaiTai is a seriously amazing drink, simple in ingredi-

ents and requires some skill. You will be amazing how refreshing it is and you won’t get any Love Boat nightmares. Here, my rum loving friends is the original Trader Vic’s Recipe from 1944. The great drinks of our past are our future. Please prepare with respect and drink accordingly. – 1 oz lime juice – 1/2 oz orange Curaçao – 1/4 oz orgeat syrup – 1/4 oz 1:1 simple syrup – 1 oz aged Jamaican rum – 1 oz aged dark rum 1/2 lime pressed peel side up for garnish with sprig of mint You can get this recipe at Ralston’s Goat.

BIG VIEW

Vintage for the Future By Chris Murphy

History and Civic Pride 101

History is not for the young? Why, you say? It’s all part of civic pride and you don’t have to be old or retired appreciate the history of where you live or where you go. In fact, the earlier people learn about their city, the more pride we will have. Civic pride is based on history and you know when you go to places that have a lot of history, the pride of how much their citizens love their city really shows. The people of New Orleans know their history. Green Bay loves their legendary football team. Boston is Boston strong and the list goes on and on.

Modesto needs to be in Modesto USA, A Classic American City. We have a ton of cool resources in our community to help you understand, know and learn about your history. The McHenry Museum and the McHenry mansion are places that are very special to our history and were built when William Ralston “modestly” declined to have this city named after him and Robert McHenry made a bet on Modesto, invested and built. Through the late 1800s as Modesto developed as a city, we were always been ahead of the curve and innovating. What was true then is still true today; Water, Wealth, Contentment & Health still stands. With our irrigation systems and early advances in electricity and aviation Modesto was quite the happening place in the Victorian age and has the early 20th century developed. Early10th St. was lined with theaters and hotels and performing arts were an important part of our culture and still shine today. Agriculture started driving our region. Modesto was an original fork to farm community and still is today as our products feed most of the world and Gallo, the world’s largest winery, leads the industry as it has since the end of Prohibition. Our history of architecture is no different. Modesto lead the way back in the late 1800s and early 1900s as the wealth of our agribusiness attracted leading architects and designers. During the 30s and 40s, the central valley ranch style home became it’s own style and we even attracted cool European designs. Then in the 50s and 60s became a hotbed of mid-century modern design many of which still exist today. In fact, these styles are leading the way of new design and many of our original dwellings still stand. You can learn more about this during Modesto Architecture and Design Week, aka MADWeek, September 21-28. We have these really cool collations of cultures from the Victorian to the Bauhaus age to the mid century modern when suburban innovation was changing our culture, the highways and the drive-ins gave way to the cruising eras of American Graffiti where the tailfins and the futuristic modern designs paved the way for a baby boom generation. Like many cities around the world we need to celebrate these amazing cool cultures.

History Fun Fact

Did you know that Ronald Reagan played William Ralston in one of his last dramatic film or TV roles in “Raid on the San Francisco Mint” episode of Death Valley Days in 1965? It’s true. Reagan was both the narrator and actor in this thrilling 30 minute episode (photo Cointalk.com)

Our history intersects at many places. Modesto’s agriculture riches led to the creation of rockabilly music in the 30s and 40s with the migration of the “Okies” and the central valley hillbilly boogie music scene created by the Maddox Brothers and Rose would later lead to Buck Owens and Merle Haggard all of whom worked and lived in around Modesto, while our radio station KTRB broadcast this hillbilly boogie Rockabilly music across the world, even influencing a young Elvis Presley. At the same time we had the innovative design with Bauhaus architecture with the Hall of Records in Downtown Modesto built in 1933. FOR MORE MODESTO INFO: www.modestoview.com

So the cultural aspects have been there and now we need to make sure that this current generation and especially our next generation have the knowledge that will teach people to be Modesto proud. It is more important than ever that our local history reaches these next generations so we can build on the good things that our city represents. From the birthplace of Rock and Roll via Rockabilly, the innovation of the wine industry from Gallo, the innovation of the sport of mountain climbing by Royal Robbins, the design and architecture of our dwellings and the celebration of our classic culture by a new filmmaker George Lucas, there is so much about our history that is exciting and these stories need to be shared. So this is where we need you! We need more history buffs. We need more docents to share our history with visitors. The McHenry Mansion is not just a static place of old memories, it is an important and living space where we showcase what makes Modesto what it is. Those successful Victorian times laid the way for our future innovations. The arts of the 20s and 30s paved the way for our current Modesto native talent on the big and little screens and the architecture and design is something that is cool again, all over the world and of course, without American Graffiti, there would have been no Star Wars. Shall we go on? The McHenry Mansion and the McHenry Museum need our next generation to visit, to learn and to get involved and share our stories. Steampunk is hot all over the world and is a big part of the Cosplay and comic world and that comes from the Victorian era, represented in Modesto by the McHenry Mansion, and the gilded age and the dapper days reflected a new and exciting energy in both Modesto and across the USA. Dapper Days is one of the most popular theme days at Disneyland, lead by this and the next generation. New bars in Modesto like LoFi and Blades & Bottles bring those retro Art Deco and industrial designs of the early century like the original State Theatre. Ralston’s Goat is named after the founder of Modesto. Tiki and tropical themes are on the rebound, propelled by the desire for escapism and the coolness of the retro lounge vibe and surf, exoctica and Rockabilly music. There is a reason why every new cool bar has a nod to history and in many cases, look like an old turn of the century factory or speakeasy. History is cool and today’s people want to know where things come from, how they are made, where their food is grown, and the origins of their craft cocktails and how great the taste of a Hemmingway Daiquiri, Manhattan, Old Fashioned or original 1944 MaiTai can be.

2000’s ...

1940’s

Please take time to get involved in preserving and teaching our history.

There is a craftsmanship of our history that will go a long way in creating a real exciting future, based on the real story that is our Modesto USA. Authenticity is the key to a successful brand or city and Modesto is loaded with it. Let’s make this fun and excite the people around us and those who visit.

MADWEEK 2019: Bauhaus 100 - Modesto Our city will be spinning with all things design, September 21-28, with Modesto Architecture & Design Week (MADWEEK) Since 2008, Modesto has been host to an award-winning week of all things architecture and design that has attracted as many as 5,000 people annually to our city. The Modesto Architecture and Design Week (MADWEEK) celebrates architecture and design as both an art and a science, and heightens public awareness of architecture and design and of the value that architects and designers play in creating more beautiful, creative, innovative and livable communities. MADWEEK celebrates all design disciplines, including: architecture, fashion design, graphic design, interior design, landscape architecture, product design, social design, and user experience (UI/UX) design. The theme for MADWEEK 2019 is “Bauhaus 100 – Modesto.” Founded in Dessau, Germany, in 1919, the Bauhaus was an iconic design school whose modernist approach influenced the education, practice and theory of art and design worldwide, including here in Modesto. In 2019, a global movement is underway to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus and its myriad of contributions to society. The global influence of Bauhaus can be directly traced to and seen in downtown Modesto today.

She is the being who breathes the life into the Valley Talent Project, hands on in every aspect of the event, a true cheerleader for those of us in the trenches. She gets it. Thank you Ms. Sarah.

COMEDY VIEW Hello, hello, hello I’m having more fun than a skunk at a

perfume factory. I just made that up, not sure what it means, but I think I’m going to stand by my statement. Check out the events in the back this month for September comedy because there are too many to list and you know you need to go out. This month I am interviewing the very funny Rhoda Ramone. Rhoda is working with Roman Guzman and not only hosting but helping to produce his monthly Comedy Show at the Bistro this month she will be hosting September 13 at 8 with headliner Chelsea Bearce. So, I sat down with Rhoda (translation: I sent her some random thoughts in an email or something and she answered them. It seemed so professional) Felicia: How do you balance being a mom and a desire to live a lifestyle usually attributed to royalty? Rhoda: Standup lifestyle is like royalty? Where’s my chauffeur? Where my diamonds at? Where’s my Duke husband/distant cousin? This is new to me. However, my wedding dress was a replica of Kate Middleton’s. Maybe that is why I am single now.

By Felicia Aleman Note: Rhoda said some serious stuff about being a mom, and really, we get it, you’re a good mom. I only have 400 words so we have to move on Felicia: What is the most important thing we should know about your comedy? Rhoda: My comedy is about me and my experience. It’s honest and embarrassing and weird, like me. Felicia: You’re just now getting into producing shows. Why’d you start now and why did you wait? Rhoda: My time is very limited with a day job and trying not to be a crappy mom. So producing something seemed a little overwhelming, I wasn’t sure I could do a good job. But on the other hand, I am always interested in learning and doing new things, so when the chance to co-produce with Roman came up it seemed like a great opportunity to learn the ropes but also to have someone that knew what they were doing to help. Basically, if this show is a disaster it is all his fault and I had nothing to do with it. I kid, I kid. Felicia: Any random silliness to add? Rhoda: I am excited for the show because the venue has these gyro sandwiches that make me forget my sadness... Felicia: Until next month. Stay Hydrated.

Juxtaposing story-teaching, participation, comedy, and image curation, artist Scott Erickson walks us through the very personal and universal conversation about the death of a dream and the overwhelming voice of Giving Up in our lives. “Say Yes: A Liturgy of Not Giving Up on Yourself” is a multi-sensory experience that reveals this moment not as an ending but as a sacred doorway into a much deeper invitation to our hopes, vocation, and our existence itself.
