Wow, what a cool 2021 Graffiti Summer in August. We essentially had our own Hot August Nights, but that name is taken, and besides, we have our own Graffiti Summer which is 10 times cooler. It was so great to see people out at the car shows, so cool to see all of the different ages, the huge number of classics and low riders as well as the addition of Coffee and Cars exotics crowd. This is really it friends, our Classic Car culture is so much more than a 57 Chevy, although that is an extremely cool car. Graffiti is about the kids restoring an old Falcon and embracing our cultural variety and the next generations. The amount of work, art and detail that go into the low riders and the retro highway travel vacation cars with the restored luggage are so very cool. This is the lifestyle, the art, the paint, the Rockabilly music and the pin-up style that make this all so exciting. Working on the Graffiti USA Museum, we are going to make sure that this is all part of our mission. It’s going to be a lot of fun and hope you will join in at www. graffitiusamuseum.com A huge thanks to the North Modesto Kiwanis. Their American Graffiti Festival and Show is the big one that helped bring Graffiti back to Modesto 22 years ago. On the eve of the annual Cruise Parade, we inducted our 2021 Legends of the Cruise on the Walk of Fame and it is so great to recognize these folks that lived the American Graffiti story. The big surprise of

the night, that completely caught me off guard, was my own induction to the Walk of Fame and being named Grand Marshal of the 2021 Cruise Parade. This is such an honor and I am so very grateful to all of the hard work of the North Modesto Kiwanis for including me with the legends and marshals that came before me. I and my family thank you. We are out and about, carefully. Not only are we still on the doorstep of normal life, we are very watchful about the events that have been planned and we need to stay on top of what is happening. ModestoView is here to make sure we keep you up to date. Our calendar is starting to fill up again, but our ace expert Middagh Goodwin is keeping an eye on the status of our live and in person events. Make sure you let us know what is happening via email at events@modestoview. com and we will connect you with our community. It’s time to get healthy. As we venture out, it is really important that we get and stay healthy. We live in an area with amazing fresh food and there are many new options for plant based nutrition. There are also great ways to stay in shape in the great outdoors in our public spaces. We followed Modesto’s Ninja Poet Sam Pierstorff on one of his Urban Jungle cruises and tried some excellent vegan food options. Also, we are showcasing our heath and wellness events for this month with the return of the charity walks so please donate if you are able to. I hope that you will find this as interesting as I do. And now, the elephant in the room.

Let’s make this simple as we are talking about health. Now that the Vaccine is FDA Approved, there is no excuse to be unvaccinated. As of Aug 28, Stanislaus County is still less than 50% fully vaccinated. The way to open our economy is to get vaccinated. Really. It is safe and the 99.2% of COVID fatalities are those unvaccinated. Stay alive, & git ‘er done. Protect yourself and more importantly, others. You can get vaccinated at nearly every pharmacy and there are county locations. Talk to your local health care professional if you need facts. Thanks to our local business for supporting ModestoView as ModestoView has been here for you, through the toughest times of the pandemic and now as we open up. Consider advertising with us so we can keep doing good in our community and spreading the positive news that we all so desperately need right now. Our readers and our advertising business are the best in town. Please tell a friend about what we do. So we go into September, into football season, fall fund raiser season and tomato fresh pack season and it will be fun. Our family has our fantasy football league set up and it will be fun. I hope to see you all out and about and thank you so much for being a ModestoView reader. With Gratitude, Chris Murphy, Founder and Publisher, ModestoView

On the Cover

Our September cover is a milestone. Our All Ages Editor Sofia Johnson is saying goodbye to the pages of the View. She has been writing for us for over 4 years and she begins a new chapter at Cal Poly. This issue is all about health and fitness and it was a perfect way to showcase our local amazing produce at the Farmer’s Market, one of Sofia’s regular places she loves here in Modesto. We will miss her and wish her well in her studies and hope that when she finishes, she will find a great next chapter back here in Modesto. Thanks go out to the Johnson – Gregerson family, Chad, Kelly, Leia and Sofia for the endless support they have given to ModestoView and our community

LIBRARY VIEW Like other organizations, Stanislaus County Libraries had to create new ways to conduct business due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While library buildings closed to the public for months, library service continued – curbside, virtually, by phone and email. Resources were reallocated to increase the offerings of digital materials, including eBooks, digital audiobooks, eMagazines, digital movies, music and more. The digital services library card was created out of necessity, but now also offers new customers the convenience of quick remote access to digital library materials. Library staff pivoted to deliver highquality programming – virtually. Authors and publishers allowed libraries to feature their works in virtual Story Times. Stanislaus Libraries offered English and bilingual Story Times, English and Spanish versions of evening Story Breaks, and A Chapter at a Time Book Clubs for kids in both languages. Families have enjoyed virtual themed trivia nights and digital escape rooms. Pre-COVID and new book clubs have convened online, offering adults a fun and safe way to connect with others who enjoy books and reading. The library’s popular Summer Reading program and other reading

challenges have migrated to the Beanstack app, so participants can easily track their reading online for the chance to win prizes and/or bragging rights. The exciting thing is many people find virtual programs to be a convenient way to participate within their already busy schedules. Indeed, many of these new virtual programs will continue. Library buildings have gradually reopened, first welcoming those needing a cool space last summer, then providing computer access by appointment, as well as mobile printing. LearningQuest literacy tutors began meeting with students outdoors. Libraries opened with limited

capacities, and eventually, without capacity restrictions. Two major projects were just beginning when COVID-19 hit our community. Both projects moved forward as planned. In June 2021, we opened a brand new library opened in Empire, conveniently located adjacent to the pool and park, and across from Empire Elementary School. Empire’s new library offers an expanded collection of children’s materials and an outdoor patio for creative library and community programs. In August 2021 a long-awaited expansion and renovation resulted in a beautiful new Turlock Library. It features 60% more space, dedicated areas for children and teens, a maker space, a community room, a quiet reading area and a Friends of the Library bookstore, as well as inviting outdoor spaces, including an enclosed children’s play area. Both projects were completed on time and under budget. Library staff successfully applied for multiple grants to offer new, innovative programs and services for the community during the pandemic. As a result, customers can check out a Wi-Fi hotspot, kids can pick up a STEAM kit (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) and then join an online class to learn coding, and people of all ages can check out a Ukulele Kit and then participate in lessons, thanks to the “Uke Got This” copycat grant, originally designed by the Los Angeles Public Library. September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, so it’s a good time to remind folks that Stanislaus County Libraries are back, and better than ever! In August, libraries established new hours, restoring some evening and Saturday hours throughout the county. A new library card design is being launched in September, and everyone is invited to join the Library Card Sign-Up Month Reading Challenge to collectively read 100,000 minutes. So, whether you’re new to the library or just haven’t visited in a while, we welcome you to any of our 13 libraries, and invite you to get a new library card today! Brad Hawn is the “Best of Show” winner of the Mistlin Gallery/ Central California Art Association Autumn Art Festival 2021. His watercolor painting “Home Stretch” is on display at the gallery, along with the other award winners, including his wife Nancy Hawn, first prize in the Oil Painting division through October 8. Virginia White won first prize in water media, Tammy Jo Schoppet in 3-dimensional works, Anna Barber in Graphic works, and Marilyn Zinner in the mixed media category. Tickets are available in advance from the Mistlin Gallery, or at the door. This is an Annual Fundraising Event for the Central California Art Association. Dan Petersen, one of the most influential artists and instructors in the 209 died recently. Many local artists took his classes at MJC and cite him as a major influence of their own Art. I most often ran across Dan in the many art shows we entered. Dan often with a “Best of show” watercolor. I never took a class from Dan, but had many conversations over the years, and helped him with his retrospective shows after his retirement from the Modesto Junior College Art Department Faculty. Ever the art enthusiast, Dan will be missed. Mary Scheinuck was one of Dan Petersen’s students with honors, and a colleague at MJC as Art Department Faculty. Mary has her own local exhibition this month at the Kruse-Lucas Gallery on Tully Road. Mary is an instructor at Modesto Junior College and past Gallery Director. Her works in oil, pastel, watercolors, acrylic and mixed media span themes of beauty and abstract filled with color, to statements about the world we live in. She currently works out of her home studio in Manteca. W E I V BREW Swing Into Squeeze In

By Brandilyn Brown & Christopher Mitchell

We’ve had some great bloody marys in our day, so when a friend shared with us about how much they enjoyed the “Hail Mary” at Squeeze In on Roselle & Floyd, we had to check it out for ourselves. It is named after the football term “Hail Mary pass”; a very long pass typically made in desperation, with great difficulty of achieving a completion. Well, this drink is that: I dare you to finish it, it’s nearly impossible! Thankfully we both helped to tackle this brew. The “Hail Mary” is in a class of its own. This one-litre behemoth comes with a celery stalk, olives, pepperoncini, several strips of bacon and half a grilled cheese sandwich making it technically an entire breakfast! At $14.99, that’s a great deal for a breakfast, lolz. (If you’re a hobbit it’s a good first breakfast. There are over 40 omelettes to choose from for your second breakfast.)

Lucky us, we were able to enjoy ours over a chat with Kathy Monday, owner operator, who is very “hands-on-deck”. Bouncing from table to table, taking orders, delivering food, chatting and sharing smiles, she makes you feel like you matter. You are not just a table, you are humans sharing an experience in her restaurant for a sliver of time. She went to college thinking she would be a lawyer her whole life, but instead fell in love with the very small franchise of Squeeze In when she visited the Truckee diner five years ago. “The live free, peace and love vibe just felt like home. I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I’m still a partner at my firm but this is what I love. It’s me.” You can tell! Her heart is on her sleeve when she tells you about the cute little dwarf she just bought that now sits near the front entrance, and about “Grandpa Marvin”, the creator of the aliens that are featured in every Squeeze In diner. Her son Jared joined the venture as general manager and one of his best friends as the head chef. Their investment really paid off! They are just as busy as they were pre-Covid and have expanded with more outside seating available. If you would like to join their team, they are looking for cooks, hosts and servers. Kathy’s favorite plate is one of the most popular picks on the menu: the Racy Tracy. It’s a bacon, mushroom and Monterey jack cheese omelette topped with avocado that was featured on the Food Network’s “Throwdown with Bobby Flay”. We *almost* ordered it, instead, Chris settled on the “Manly Morris Meal” which is two eggs, spudz, toast, choice of protein and biscuits and gravy while I chose the “Spanish Flay”, an omelette with diced pepper, cheese, spudz and parsley. All omelettes come with a choice of sauce: creamy mushroom, tomato pesto or cheddar cheese and I got the tomato pesto. Order extra gravy, it’s fabulous on the spudz! Friends, it will not disappoint! We had so much food, we had to box half our plates. Like any good brunch spot, Squeeze In offers mimosas as well, if the Hail Mary isn’t a challenge you want to accept. It’s not for the faint of heart, but delicious to the last drop. Do the “Better with a Buddy” deal to get 2 mimosas for $12.99. Customers are encouraged to write on the walls and leave little messages with Sharpies after their meals-leave your inspirational message when you swing in. Sip on, friends!

W E I V INTER

MV: With so many great songs and a dozen plus hits what is the one song that really gets the crowd going? JP: Well there are several, I will say “Urgent” always brings the house down, “Feels Like the First Time” seems to get them sparked up “Jukebox Hero” is always intense we do a lot of improvising and jamming on that we have a lot of fun with that on that, “I Want to Know What Love Is” was a worldwide #1 hit, everyone sings along to that. To answer your question there are several songs but to be honest for the most part I think the whole sets gets them rocking.

Feels Like the First Time: Interview with Jeff Pilson of Foreigner

By Middagh Goodwin

With over 45 years of recording and touring worldwide and over a dozen hits Foreigner is sure to please fans new and old when they perform with Great White at Basi Nationwide Amphitheater at the Fruit Yard on September 24th. I had the pleasure of talking with long time bass/Keyboards/Backing Vocalist Jeff Pilson(Dokken/Dio/Foreigner...) and here is what he had to say. MV: You have quite the discography performing and recording with Dokken, Dio, Starship and of course Foreigner. What are some of the differences and similarities with writing, recording and performing with such a diverse lineup of bands? JP: Not as much as you might think, bands like Dokken, we looked at Foreigner as a template to what we wanted to do. Our plan was to have melodic hard rock with heavy grooves and big catchy choruses, and I think we did that. MV: How excited are you as a band to be performing again? JP: Well, completely excited, we have been waiting over a year to play, that was torturous to us. We have played 10 months out of the year for the last 16 years. That was tough for us but we are thrilled to be back performing live and seeing our audiences. It is great to be back.

MV: How different has it been playing post covid as opposed to before the pandemic? JP: You didn’t see any mask before this. We are taking percaussions, everybody has to be careful with Covid. We have seen some of our peers have to leave the road because of getting covid or covid things. We are doing bi-weekly testing with band and crew and so far it is working and we hope to be on the road and safe as long as we can. MV: How is it having Great White to tour with? JP: I believe this is the only show we are doing with me, so I can not report on that yet. I have been friends with those guys for ever and look forward too it. I love them personally and the music, it is going to be great. MV: What can fans expect from when seeing Foreigner perform live? JP: What I hear the most from people seeing us is “I didn’t know how many Foreigner songs I knew”, people are always shocked with how many songs they know. Foreigner had 16 top 30 songs which is a real luxury when putting the setlist together it is kind of cheating because we have so many great songs. I think they will be singing along dancing and walk away having a tremendous experience.

MV: How long of a set are you expecting to perform? JP: We have several hits and it is hard to fit them all in we try to play 140-145 minutes plus each night. Some nights there are time constraints and have to keep it to 90 but we play accordingly.

MV: What kind of response do you get from the next generation of fans in general versus your seasoned fans? The band has been recording and touring for 4 and a half decades. JP: It is shocking, we see a lot of young kids at the shows and the seem to know the songs they are songs. I don’t know if they know it from the parents introducing us to them. Though we have been in various TV shows like Glee, American Idol, Orange is the New Black and movies so the songs are part of pop culture. It is one more testimony of how timeless and universal these songs are.

MV: Can’t Slow Down was released in 2009 and is the only studio album that features you and the singer KellyHansen. Any new material we can look forward to? A new album in the works? JP: There is new material being worked on and there are plans to put it out. There are not at this time to put out a whole new record of new material. It is kind of hard at this time being such a touring machine. We are working on new material that will see the light at some point, don’t have an announcement of when, you just have to keep looking out for it. MV: Anything you want to add? JP: Thanks for coming to the show, we really look forward to seeing you there, it is going to be a fantastic show. We are really grateful for live shows again and we really want to make it count. Tickets are available at richtergroup.net $50-$120

W E I V Senior Stride D O O F

By Tasha Wilson By Chris Murphy

Being healthy and staying in shape is not just for young people. In fact, it is even more important to stay in shape when you are older, like me. More importantly, it is harder to get back in shape at an advanced age, so don’t let it get away from you. Staying in shape is really as easy as taking a walk. You don’t have to do it for too long, you just need to get going. My 100 year old Grandma, when asked about what she attributed her long life to, replied “Just keep moving”. So track your steps, get your comfy shoes on, and get ready to stride.

Alzheimer’s Walk

By Chris Murphy

Cruel... This is the word that makes the most sense for people

battling Alzheimer’s. It is cruel in every sense of the word. It is cruel to the person fighting, as their memories and functions disintegrate. It is cruel to the families that watch a loved one fade away. It is cruel to “lose” people that were so vibrant and it leaves them a hollow shell. Unlike cancer and heart disease, there is no operation, cure or treatment that brings victims back. I lost my mother in law Vivian McNulty, a whip smart creative and very funny person who was forced to retreat from life. I lost my grandfather who got lost and tumbled down a flight of stairs. Many of you have similar stories and you all feel so equally helpless. How can there not be a cure when so many suffer? The Alzheimer’s Society is working hard on medical research, support groups, awareness and most importantly raising funds so that Alzheimer research remains a priority. We must stop this mysterious, tragic and cruel disease. This month, there is a walk for Alzheimer’s on September 11. Check in is at 8am and walk starts at 9. I encourage you to donate to a walking team or walker or create your own team or walk yourself. Please scan this QR code to get more info and donate.

BreastHealth

F

By Chris Murphy & Susan J Power “You have cancer” are three little words no one ever wants to hear, however one in eight women will hear those words. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women!! Susan J Power is a nine-year survivor with a passion to make a difference in her community. Early detection is imperative in fighting breast cancer. She has become an advocate for women, and talks with and meets at least three to five new ladies each week to share stories, and offer support and guidance and validate that they too can make it through the journey of breast cancer. Women are living with breast cancer and surviving breast cancer. Women are having prophylactic mastectomies, and early detection testing that is preventing the disease from taking lives. Susan herself battled breast cancer, choosing a mastectomy, enduring chemo, and fought back. It is not just about her, Susie’s two daughters

are screened regularly as being first-degree relative increases risk greatly. Susan’s mother also suffered from breast cancer, losing her battle at age 48 so she is passionate about creating awareness and working hard for a cure. So make sure you are aware of your family history. Susan explains, “Ladies make sure you are doing your monthly exams, see your Doctor on a regular basis and follow all screening guidelines. You always have time to take care of a lump or bump or anything that feels off in your breast. It can be the difference between having stage I or stage IV cancer. Don’t be so busy that you miss taking care of YOU. YOU, and only YOU are in charge of your well- being, so don’t put off any exams you need today, for tomorrow may be to late.” But we all still have to fight to raise

funds and awareness. We can’t let our guard down, even if we feel great. We encourage you to help and get involved. There are many events coming in October, but it is not too late to begin to support your teams and contribute to people that will be working hard to find a cure. The big event is the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer on October 23. Come support the celebrity bartender fundraiser at Ralston’s Goat on the 22. I will be there serving drinks along with Susie and friends. Sun Oct 17 - 2-6pm Sip & Shop Pink at the Terrace Breast Cancer Awareness & Fundraiser for Making Strides Against breast cancer hosted by the Terrace with survivor speaker Susan Powers

Heart Walk

By Chris Murphy

Your ticker, your time keeper, your soul, your love, your passion. Yes friends, your lifeline is your heart. It has never been more important and in fact, easier, to keep your heart in tip top shape. The simple act of getting up off the couch and getting going is the best way to save your heart. Your heart needs to pump, your body needs the blood flow and more you use it, the stronger you get. That big greasy burger? It may taste good, but your heart hates it. That bowl of oatmeal? Boring? Your heart loves it. There are so many things you can do to take care of your heart. You need it, and your friends and family need you. See how this works. I just lost a friend last month that had been working so hard and was making plans for retirement, and suffered a heart attack and died tragically, way too early. You have to listen to your heart, feed your heart and treat it right and be aware of any health risks you may have. Check your cholesterol, cut down the fats, and keep moving. My 100 year-old grandmother was asked what her secret to long life is and she said “Keep moving”. What else do you need to hear? Research shows that more people in the U.S. are sitting more and moving less than they did prior to the pandemic. The increase in sedentary lifestyles created by the pandemic will have a lasting impact on heart health. If everyone increased their activity, even by a small amount, we would see an improvement in health and lower cost of disease in the United States. Healthy life expectancy can be positively impacted by increasing activity. Please join up with the American Heart Association Heart Walk on September 18 at 9 am. This year, the Modesto and Stockton walk are combined at University of the Pacific. If you can’t walk in this event to raise money for heart research, please find a local team you can donate to. ModestoView and Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group have teamed up for the 2021 in person (as of this printing) Heart Walk at MJC West and you can scan this QR code and donate to our team.

Even tough COVID ravaged our planet over the last few months, it didn’t change the fact that there are people in disadvantaged areas that have no mobility. Being disabled, without the use of arms or legs can be a death sentence in many countries. For the last couple of decades, Hope Haven West has been the source, and in many cases, the only source, of mobility for many in Mexico, Central and South America as well as Vietnam and Mongolia. This local charity collects, refurbishes and delivers wheelchairs all over the world. 100% of what is donated goes directly to the refurbishing and delivery of wheelchairs. We caught up with Lonny Davis, the ever so energetic leader of Hope Haven West and asked him what is happening, now that we are getting a break in this pandemic. “Finally these countries are opening up, but the need has just grown so much more. We are preparing containers of wheel chairs and many have been delivered to our partner organizations in Mexico. There is still a huge need for more chairs, and more volunteers to do chair seatings and distribution”, explains Lonny. “Throughout the pandemic, we continued to collect chairs and people like Rotarians Don Murphy and Nick Mascatelli have been super-human in their ability to get these chairs refurbished with limited volunteers and also organize the delivery of collected chairs to refurbishing groups and taking delivery of the “Hope Haven Chair”, he continues. I have been on one of these distributions in Mongolia and everything Lonny explains is so very important where the need is so great and a wheel chair will change a life. Modesto’s Urban By Chris Murphy, featuring Sam Pierstorff – Ninja Poet Photos and video by Brandon Brush and Hakeem Pierstorff Sometimes the greatest explorations are those things in your own yard. In the last 18 months, we have been turned inside out, upside down, we have opened, closed again and opened and finally we are getting enough people vaccinated so that a new normal is at our doorstep. Though all of this, is that need to get out and feel alive and keep yourself healthy. Even if you have not yet reentered life at full speed, you need to be in the sun, explore, get out of your box and take a good look around you and be healthy. Our streets, our Urban Jungle, our parks and buildings are made to be explored. It is easy, so take those first steps and get going. Just making those first steps into the wild are so important.

To help us shake this off, we connected with our friend, the amazing MJC English Professor, athlete, Tik Tok star, Instagram influencer, Poetry Slam founder, husband, film short star and father Sam Pierstorff, a.k.a Ninja Poet. He discovered a lot of things about himself over the last few years that lead him to compete on the American Ninja Warrior show and learn that he has amazing power ratio that will amaze you. Not only is he witty and funny, he and stand on this head, literally, on his head as you can see in the attached photo. You may not be ready to do gymnastics in our urban jungle, there are things that you can learn from and go a little down the road. Who knows, you may be contorting yourself into a human flag on a street sign post. A few years ago, Sam was watching American Ninja Warrior show, and his daughter Ameena asked if he could do something like that. The answer wasn’t exactly yes and it got him thinking. Soon he would be doing push ups, pull ups, running stadium steps and even building his own Ninja training gym at home. So

16

here we are today, mild mannered English professor by day and stealthy Ninja Poet acrobat as a side hustle. He doesn’t even change in a phone booth (what’s a phone booth?) Our Jungle Cruise started without a Fastpass with a healthy morning coffee at Preservation on J Street. After enjoying this frothy latte, the warm ups begin. A nearby light pole does the trick. After a few stretches, Sam is ready for some more complicated moves, as yoga meets street acrobatics. Sam reaches the Mural Art Alley and performs the very difficult flag pose. This uses every muscle in your body. After holding this for 4 seconds and getting good marks from the judges at the coffee shop, we press on to find six stories of stairs. One the way, Sam walks by Café Deva, on his hands. No biggie. People barely notice as it must just happen all the time in Modesto USA. Around the corner, we find

a parking garage. A good stair run can be done with any experience level and it gets you going. After a sprint to the roof, some push ups and some salmon ladder stair climbs are in order. Sprinting down the stairs, it is time for a brisk run to the Virginia Corridor via Magnolia. It is a nice wide street with pretty houses and Sam reached a top speed of nearly 20 MPH for a brief moment. With the blood flowing, and a lecture on the benefits of sprints along the way, we reach the Rotary junction of the Virginia Corridor at Roseburg Square. Keeping the cardio going, Sam went for some bench jumps and reached for the sky on the Centennial arch. Following these difficult moves, Sam centered himself and explained “everything is about balance. You have to have balance in your life and in your workouts for everything to work” as he walked the 4” wide fence rails that rival the difficulty of an Olympic balance beam. There are many little playgounds, fitness

areas and splash pads along the Corridor and this is always good for a multi-mile trail walk, run or bike for all abilities for solo workouts or with families. With a run back in to down and ran up the steps of the McHenry Museum breaking out in a Rocky celebration. As a warm down, Sam caught a moment of Zen and that moment went to his head. There are nice green spaces to take a break, grab a moment, take a sack lunch and get some peace in an urban jungle. After all of this hard work it’s time for some nutritious body fuel at the newly opened downtown Farmacy, where the menu from top to bottom was created for running a healthy body by Erin Doran and her team. As Sam reached for a Spa Water and relaxed, a whole day was left to stretch the brain in many other ways, work, family and friends. You might not enjoy some of the things that Sam has trained to do, but it is easy to modify this routine, get out, take some steps, run some steps and find a way to be healthy on this daily jungle routine.

Sam Pierstorff a.k.a Ninja Poet is a trained Ninja athlete, do not attempt to recreate these activities as it may cause injury. These are for illustration purposes only.

Covid felt like a cage for too long. I was cast out of my classroom, forced to teach online, and like everyone else, I was confined to my home, which I love, but with two dogs, three kids, and a wife—no matter how wonderful they all are—life began to feel claustrophobic. I became depressed. Quite depressed, in fact. The only way to break free for me was through movement. I had to leave the house to walk or to run, to think and to experience the natural environment. Exercise was healing. Being outside was liberating. And above all, I found perspective out there in that glorious urban jungle we call Modesto. It’s easy to see the blight in our community just as it’s easier to see what we don’t have than what we do. But as I started to walk (and then to run), I didn’t complain about the dead grass, the dumped mattresses, or the couches in the middle of almond orchards as I traversed the fields. Instead I marveled at the symmetry of the trees in perfect rows, the tiny birds that flitted by, the dandelions that bloomed in sidewalk cracks. On those outings, my mindset started to shift from pessimism to optimism, from a place of lack to a place of abundance. I got stronger during quarantine, but that’s because my mind got stronger, and if you can convince the mind, the body will follow. But with gyms virtually closed, I had to get creative. I quickly realized how much is possible with a positive outlook and a little imagination. I did pushups wherever I could, used tree branches and crosswalks for pull-ups, sprinted up the Briggsmore overpass (a lot), and smiled at the expansive view from the top—the winding Virginia Corridor path snaking its way through the canopy of trees, the children on bikes, the chalk messages scrawled by good samaritans: We are all in this together. I learned to breathe deeply, and to stay balanced. Most of us aren’t. Many teeter toward negativity and become that way entirely. Others are so toxically positive, we want to slap them just to make them stop smiling. But life is about balance. And when I lost mine, I slipped into a dark well of depression, and the only way out for me was through movement and mindset. So thank you, Modesto. Your roads, your parking garages, your orchards and your canals all helped me heal. But the funny thing is, these things have always been here. I was just too busy to notice how much I needed them before.

The Farmacy By Chris Murphy

A new oasis of healthy deliciousness is

open on 10th Street, my favorite street in town. Here on Modesto’s original cruise route where things are happening, Erin Doran and her team have been working on this new project they call the Farmacy for a few years. What began as a pop up, near their Century event center, the Nine3One Work Space and the Rose Bouquet, was refined during COVID and earlier this year, a new menu and restaurant concept developed and a new fully independent Farmacy was born. Erin is really proud of this phase of her 10th Street expansion. Over the years as her business grew, she battled digestive health issues and many food allergies. When she went to her doctor, the solutions were medicinal, sometimes involving steroids and many foods were eliminated from her diet. She grew depressed and decided to start researching food science and for solutions. As she learned, she also earned a certificate in food science and developed her own plant-based vegan diet. At first it was difficult, but over the last few years, it has become easier as ingredients became more plentiful. Over time, she became healthy and illness free and she decided that she could build a full restaurant along with her other businesses. So today we have the Farmacy.

Modesto View is all about the deliciousness of our local food. During this month, you can smell the tomatoes in the air, our farmer’s markets are loaded with fresh deliciousness, our local restaurants are so fortunate to be bringing that farm right to your fork. Friends, we have it good. The Modesto Certified Farmer’s Market is one of my regular stops, and if you are there on a Thursday and Saturday morning, you know it is a popular place where fresh veggies and fruits are beautiful and plentiful. We love pretty much all kinds of food, and while I am not vegetarian or vegan, there are many in our community that are and for them, this healthy lifestyle is very important. But beyond this preference, I have learned that some vegan food is flat out tasty. You have heard about Beyond burgers and Impossible dogs, but how do they taste? Is it that farm to fork experience? If you aren’t vegan, will you like it? The answer is Yes! I was in Chicago at the Cubs game, and people were lined up getting Beyond Chicago Dogs, so you know it has to be good. It can be confusing, but we will try to simplify and there is truly no right or wrong, just levels of commitment and personal preference. If you are fully Vegan you embrace the entire lifestyle, forgoing animal-based anything, from clothing, fabrics, furnishings, health care as well as food that have any animal in the materials or ingredients. There are many that are vegan and eat vegan food that just follow the food guidelines. Those that prefer the food, but not veganism across the board refer to themselves as having a plant-based diet or vegetarian. Many people prefer the vegan diet, but supplement it with eggs and in some cases milk to meet nutritional goals and in many cases, milk and eggs are ethically produced. But in all the cases, anyone can order vegan or vegetarian and enjoy the food. There is no right or wrong answer, and the whole point is to try something new and healthy, understand a different point of view and learn how we can all celebrate living in a fantastic food place like the greater Modesto area. Enjoy and get your forks out! Check out all of the articles in this series at www.modestoview.com based ingredients. So expect The team has been careful in all of the sourcing of restaurant décor and service that is also vegan. What is nice about the Farmacy, they have done all of the thinking for you and you can count on what they serve to you will be Farmacy is named as it is farm to fork, vegan eggs on a gluten free everything roll 100% vegan. but it is also the presentation of food as with a side of edemame. TNK Vegan Café By Abigail & Harrison Power One of my favorite buildings in Downtown Modesto has always been on the corner of Needham and 15th Street and though it’s been many businesses since I’ve lived in Modesto, my lunch visit to TNK Vegan Café was the first time I’ve dined in the dream corner spot! I don’t follow a vegan or vegetarian diet, I love cheese too much, however, TNK Vegan Café has created a convenient, delicious, and fun way to try vegan options in town for those who follow all dietary plans. We ordered potstickers, a coconut pineapple smoothie, one orange chicken rice plate, one “Impossible” burger, sweet potato fries, and a Chocolate Delight cake (all vegan!!) and couldn’t have enjoyed our meal more. The flavors were unique and satisfying and made you feel like you weren’t missing any dairy, egg, or meat alternatives at all. The staff is incredibly helpful and friendly and even

gave out delicious, free organic pears for customers to snack on while they waited. Many people came to grab their lunch to go, but for me, sitting on my corner with new treats to explore was the perfect afternoon. TNK Vegan Café will be our new go to place to help focus on plant based meals to help our environment and support local business – we will be back for more! TNK Vegan Café is open 7 days a week: Tues-Fri 11 AM to 3 PM and 4 PM to 8:30 PM, 11 AM to 8:30 PM on Saturdays, and Sunday 12 PM to 7 PM. 330 Needham Street Modesto, CA 95354 209-567-2232

You can have amazing vegan meat

Bauer’s Downtown GastroPub By Chris Murphy You can find vegan food in the most amazing places. Tye Bauer is a meat specialist and his decadent meaty creations have landed him on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives and into the hearts of many locals. But if you look closely at the menu, his skills also make delicious vegan treats. No longer is it awkward to take your vegan friends out to lunch. Now you get what you want and they do too. The cool thing about Bauer’s is that many of your favorite items are available as vegan options. And yes, this means everything from the cheese, “meat”, cooking oils and everything are all vegan. If you look at the menu, you can get it vegetarian, or vegan or gluten free (look for the v/vg/gf). My order was one of my favorite burgers, the Fogo (Fire) with a big side of Brussels sprouts. It arrived and it was beautiful. FOLLOW US:

Simply put, it was really delicious. All of the flavors I love, great texture with vegan cheese all perfectly prepared by Chef Tim Mercer. Chef Tim reports that more people all of the time order the vegan preparations. He doesn’t know how many people are actually vegan, but the percentage of requests is going up nearing 1/3 of their orders. Bauer’s has always had solid vegan offerings, even back when they had Bauer’s 66 1/2 . Bauhaus also has a great vegan pastry that they use for even meat based entrees because it tastes great and cooks well as well as vegen items. When you get a chance, check it out. UNPLUGGED VIEW Go West,Young Minstrel

by Aaron Rowan

Songs of the traveler make up the soundtrack of my life. Chris Doud, who for years I’ve called the greatest songwriter in Stanislaus County, knows how to craft some mighty fine ones. This summer, the co-leading songwriter behind The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit released his latest solo record, ‘The Land Farthest West.’ The double album features 24 songs, each having ties to a specific place, whether inspired by or actually written in locations from California to Alaska to Louisiana. It’s a journey through numerous shades of Americana and country-western music, from stripped-down story songs to rowdier compositions that could hold their own in any honky-tonk. Disc one is made up of songs performed by Chris and his band The Salvage Company - Jacob Canada on bass and Ryan Coscia on drums. Opening track ‘CA-99 Blues,’ the most energetic selection on the album, tells the tale of trucking runs and tainted love across the Central Valley. Doud’s lyrical storytelling is at its strongest on ‘The Southern Leg,’ weaving a nebulous story of life on the road with a romantic partner. My favorite track, ‘Barnwood Pile,’ is a duet with Amanda Russell of the Randy Mandy Band. The song revisits a familiar theme from Doud’s work: returning to a childhood home and reflecting on the things that have disappeared from the landscape. Another

standout, ‘Amador County,’ again displays the height of Doud’s prowess in painting with words, and is the lone slow-dance paced song on the record, looking back at the youthful days of a romance now facing an uncertain future. The second batch of songs adopts a more easygoing atmosphere, as Chris calls in a bunch of friends to make music with him. ‘The Dusty One’ calls to mind Doud’s days attending poetry classes which helped shape his songwriting, as it asks the listener to read their favorite lines from a dusty book of poems. Chris treats us to a contra dance-worthy number with the fiddle-driven ‘Just The Music’ extolling the simple joy of dancing with a girl; and pays simultaneous homage to Bob Dylan, Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie with ‘Who Shall Be Free,’ complete with a backing choir comprised of Doud’s significant other and two daughters. The album is available on all the usual suspect streaming sites, or grab a hard copy online through www.heckabad.com. I’ll debut a new limited concert series this month in the VMI building at 1220 J St. Saturday 9/4, dream folk ensemble Brother Spellbinder co-headlines a show with VMI youth band Float On, who will be rocking a program of ‘70s music and more. 8 pm showtime, $10 at the door. Fridays at the Dragonfly Art For Life (1210 J St.): 9/3, Gravey featuring TJ Lake (The Dustbowl Children) & Meiko Diaz, a dynamic duo of down-home country and Americana. 9/10, Eva Cluff, musical theatre star and ukulele singersongwriter. 9/17, Boscoe’s Brood, an uptempo folk songwriter with lots of looping guitar work. All shows are $10 admission/doors at 7:00/showtime at 7:30. Intimate performances. Infinite playlist. MODESTO UNPLUGGED. www. modestounplugged.com

AUTHOR VIEW Awakening of An American Football Player By Tasha Wilson

Louis Bland is the epitome of cool, calm, and collected. People love him deeply within Stanislaus County and he has always been respected for his amazing football abilities. He is a soft-spoken man who loves his wife Lisa and their three sons to the moon and back. Those are all nice qualities to have, yet they are not the reasons why I sat down with him to chat. I wanted to discuss this little fun fact: Louis Bland, is now an Amazon #1 Best Selling Author! He has written a page-turner about his life titled, Awakening of An American Football Player. I wanted to find out exactly what made him decide to write this book and graciously, he obliged. For most of Louis Bland’s life, he had always planned on becoming a writer. Initially, he wanted to write movie scripts. Then his mother passed away. Her death was quite a blow, but after that, Louis became even more determined to write his story and his mother inspired him to complete his dream. It was also his way to pay homage to her life because, as he stated, “Even though my siblings and I lacked material things, my mother always showed unconditional love and support. She let all of her children know that we could be anything we wanted in life!” Louis Bland believes that looking at life should be similar to looking at a blank canvas. I asked him to elaborate, and this is what he said, “A blank canvas allows for a multitude of life choices. We are

responsible for creating our own destiny. The human brain is powerful, and we should create our own “Awakening” by exploring all the wonderful things we can accomplish when we don’t limit ourselves, but instead, imagine the possibilities. When searching for our own “Awakening” we should always focus on what inspires us, or simply start with the age-old question: Who Am I? Answer that question, and then find out what you really want to achieve during your lifetime and be specific. Everyone has a story to tell. You never know, sometimes your story can inspire others. So, get your story out there.” Louis Bland has touched many with his inspirational book and his personal story of his very own “Awakening.” He has no plans to stop inspiring others. In fact, his next Amazon book, Born To Win, A Mental Shift to Entrepreneurship, has just been released. http://ow.ly/sGQt50FAGaY

Excellence in Home & Kitchen Appliances

I turned 64 on August 22nd and celebrated with a live jam with the Blue Monday Band including Barry Finnerty guitarist: Miles Davis, Tower of Power, BB King, Brecker Brothers and had a ball! A lot of my peeps are still on the fence about coming out to see a show even if social distancing and precautions are in place. I encourage all to get vaccinated and be cautious but not fearful! This is our world, and we all need to get on with the business of living. The mighty Titanic was going down but the band played on. The Downtown Modesto Blues Crawl will not take place in Sept as one of the venues is not participating, hope to bring it back in October. Can’t stop the Blues! Things are opening up a bit and I am cautiously optimistic, yes the glass is half full, not half empty! Nice to see folks out and about living life and getting back to the business of living! More shows are planned, and tours are being booked: We are trying to do more live events outside with social distancing to keep people safer and inside shows with smaller capacity at Ralston’s Goat, Downtown Bauer’s and Café Urbano and other downtown venues. Café Urbano continues with live music: Sunday shows, and Blue Monday Party

GRAFFITI USA VIEW By Chris Murphy

Own A Business On 10th Street! Have you always dreamed of having a cool business on the Historic Cruise Route of 10th Street? This dream can come true! How, you ask? The Graffiti USA Museum is building a re-imagined 10th St inside the building. We are talking magic here. Think CarsLand, Disney Main Street and think about strolling down 10th, checking out the store windows and listen to rock and roll radio and check out the classic cars cruising. Part of 10th will be by day, and part will be at dusk. It will be beautiful. There are only 31 spaces on Modesto’s new 10th St, located inside the Graffiti Museum. We already have a Radio History Museum, a real record store, an appliance store and an electronics shop, eyewear shop as well as a farm implements store in the works so that only leaves 25 spaces. Do you want to be a part of this and help us build the Graffiti USA Museum and help us tell our stories in a really fun way? It’s interactive, educational, cool, beautiful, fun and it will transport you to 1962. Yes one of these 10th Street businesses can be yours.

Help us build

Reach out to see what we can do for you. You can be a part of this and we want your help to create the magic that will attract people from all over the world.

We want you

We want your ideas, your support, your cars, your donations so that we can great a place that will wow and excite people from around the world, and even those that live right here in Modesto USA! We all have so much to learn and our location on Historic US 99 is the perfect place to cruise by and check us out.

Naming Opportunities

If you want to recognize one of your family with a wing, or an exhibit room, we can do that.

Did you know?

Over $470,000 of in-kind services have been provided and this means the world to us. It’s starting to look great and we are pretty excited. Our budget to build our museum is $5.2 million. We want to create an immersive experience that will excited even the cruisers of the day as well as those who are discovering our amazing Modesto culture whether local, or from around the world, (or the galaxy)

PERFORMING VIEW

NEW STAGINGS It is a new strange time in our local performing arts. We are trying to open up, we are trying to get larger audiences and yet we hang on the door step. Many venues in the larger cities are requiring vaccination proof or a fresh negative COVID PCR test. This is the first step to protect our audiences. The Gallo Center will be implementing these rules beginning September 20. Currently masks are required as there are rules for venues with 1000 + seats. Other venues like the State and Prospect are following current guidelines requiring unvaccinated people to wear masks and anyone who needs additional protection. Regardless of all this, get your shots or tests and lets go see the shows. I will see you at the show and we can enjoy our events and have fun.

Donations

We need your donations, you can do it monthly, annually and we have some great donation gifts that will make you feel like the coolest cat in town. We are also talking big donations, like building naming donations. We now have a new recurring monthly donation option to make it easier.

Help us build it.

Check out our facebook and website to see the business that have donated their time, talent and labor. @graffitiusamuseum www. graffitiusamuseum.com

Events

The Graffiti USA Museum is now home to some of our local service clubs like the North Modesto Kiwanis. We can even help you host your event as we go into the fall. We have 40,000 sq ft and a great parking lot that we can use while we build. Our 1st goal is to get commercial restrooms in so that we can accommodate your groups.

Please contact us a info@

Mental Fitness: Let It Go! By Efren Martinez

Like many of you, I too enjoyed watching the Olympics last month. It was beyond exciting for me as I was reminded of just what the human body can accomplish. The one thing that stood out the most for me of the Olympics was Simone Biles’ courage to recognize the pressures of having to do so well while the world watched. She is an Olympian as well as being recognized as “The Goat,” The Greatest of all time. I can’t even begin to imagine how heavy that kind of pressure is to not only have but to have while the world watched her compete. Regardless if you are an Olympian or a local high school sports hero the weight can be similarly hard on you. As a pretty fast runner and Tri-athlete, I’ve always done pretty well in my races. Mostly because of the pressure to always do well. It’s what most expected of me so I pushed myself at times beyond measure to fulfil that title and what others thought of me. As I’ve aged I also have become wiser. It took some seasoning but right before the pandemic hit while we were all still racing I just learned to let it go. I mean it doesn’t

really matter what people think and how well I do. Honestly, after a race, it is exciting to share on Facebook just how well you did but by the following day, it’s yesterday’s news. It’s just not as important as it may have been right after you crossed the finish line. This FitView is dedicated to all those Athletes who have and will struggle with the weight of their peers and community on their backs to always be the greatest or at least one of the greatest in their local competitions/sports. My friends, I say let it go! The only person you have to really impress and most important make happy is yourself. Let it go! Know this, your true friends will love and respect you no matter how fast or good or heavy or slim you are. To the parents who have students starting up Football this Fall please remember that the pressures on your kids to be the best can have serious consequences on their mental health.. My advice is to continuously remind your student-athletes that you will always be proud of them at anything they do as long as they do their best. This unconditional reminder of love just doesn’t work on the field but in life in general. Cheers to your health. Follow me at www.facebook.com/QuakeFitness & www. facebook.com/quakedj

HISTORY VIEW By Harrison Power With the launch of the History View, the team here at ModestoView is continuing its commitment to highlighting the importance of Modesto’s city landmarks and the history which brings us together as a community. My name is Harrison Power, the newest member appointed to the Landmark Preservation Commission, and I look forward to championing Modesto’s historic resources and highlighting stories of our past that make Modesto unique! The history of Modesto, and of the people and buildings that came to define it over the years, connects the Modestans of today to our city’s past. After losing many of the iconic structures and homes that were beloved by many, reminiscent of the town’s early grandeur and bustling downtown, the City of Modesto Landmark Preservation Commission was established in the 1980’s to protect and honor our beautiful city. The Commission today continues with its responsibility of advising the City Council on the recognition and preservation of our city’s surviving landmarks for future generations. These landmarks,

whether officially designated or not, have wonderful stories to tell and deserve to be celebrated. They serve as an immense source of civic pride that has spanned generations, for those who built them and for those living here and appreciating them today. Please take a moment to connect (or reconnect) with your hometown and learn something new about Modesto’s history and landmarks - here are some great sources available on-line or in-person:

Rockabilly Cruise Night

We Will Never Forget

By Middagh Goodwin Rockabilly music owes a debt to Modesto and more directly to the Maddox Brothers & Sister Rose and to be specific Fred Maddox big thumping slap bass sound. One of the key components to any good rockabilly act is that rhythmic slap bass that we hear from everything from old Elvis Presley and Gene Vincent albums to the Stray Cats and bands like the Rocketz today. Trevino Barbershop is teaming up with ModestoView to bring that big slap bass sound back to Modesto with a series of Rockabilly Cruise Nights starting out on October 1st 9-Midnight at the Speakeasy Lounge 928 12th Street in Downtown Modesto and there is no cover charge. We are encouraging everyone to dress up and show up regardless if they have a hot rod or not. Don’t miss the return of Modesto’s own Tony T and the Pendletons with the aforementioned Rocketz from Los Angeles. Tony Redhorse of the Rocketz is sponsored by Greetch Guitars and the Rocketz is one of America’s leading bands in the rockabilly

underground. The Rocketz have 3 full-length albums out and a split with Hungarian ban Silver Shine. Rockabilly will cruise back into the Speakeasy on October 22nd this time joining the Pendletons we hear will be the Infamous Swanks who are just fantastic. The Infamous Swanks are a high energy rockabilly/rock and roll band from Sacramento. Once again 9-Midnight and no cover charge. Get your hair done over at Trevino’s Barbershop, shine up that chrome and come on out. Let’s get Rockabilly, Pin-Up and the Western Swing going in Modesto again. It seems like ages ago, and now there is a whole generation that wasn’t alive when we were attacked. Each generation seems to have a “where were you when something happened” moment. We hope that this current generation doesn’t experience that, but things like this bring people together to help and create unity in many cases. Let’s make sure we don’t forget this earthshaking event and make sure we continue to reject hate, racism and promote coexistence and equality. The Modesto Area Musicians reacted quickly and put together a benefit show with Grandaddy, Scenic Route, Puffin Billies, Ann Loureiro with area Girl Scouts donating the concessions and the State Theatre donating for this Red Cross Fundraiser where nearly $15,000 was raised. So very proud of our community for standing up when it was needed. That’s what Modesto does.

Falling Back Into the Season By Monica Barber

Falling back into a routine as the season is quickly changes can be tricky. The chill in the air makes people yearn for pumpkin spice lattes and all things fall. Ms M is enjoying a quick bite at Fuzio’s this afternoon and takes in the sounds of life emanating from the Plaza. She loves that life continues, and people are resilient while weathering life’s changing seasons. A great way to persevere is to support local. Here’s a few ways to support local and spare your wallet. Modesto DoMo First Fridays and Music in the Plaza have returned. September 3rd welcomes back the First Friday event hosts a variety of vendors, pop-up dance, and music in addition to so much more from 6-10pm. Passing the Torch

By Sofia Johnson

In 2006, Madison Murphy, a junior at Modesto High School at the time, and her father, Chris Murphy, founder of Modesto View, had an idea to add an All-Ages column to the magazine. After graduating high school and passing the column to her younger sister, Abbey Murphy, Madison attended the University of California, Berkeley and double majored in Global Marketing and French. Madison has since moved back to Modesto with her husband Ryan and works as Manager for Social & App Store Engagement for Adobe Software. In 2008, Abbey Murphy received the column from her older sister as she entered her freshman year at Modesto High. Abbey followed Madison’s footsteps and attended her sister’s alma mater, Cal Berkeley, with a double major in History and Peace and Conflict (Diplomacy). Today, Abbey lives in Modesto with her husband Harrison and works for Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group as a Sales and Marketing Manager. In 2013, the All-Ages Column was passed to Leia Johnson, my older sister and an incoming eighth grader at La Loma Junior High who would later attend Thomas

Downey High School. After graduating from Downey in 2018, Leia went on to attend Chico State University where she is currently majoring in psychology. In 2018, my older sister would then pass the column onto me as I entered my sophomore year at Downey. Since then, I have had the absolute honor to write about Modesto, the place I love most, and follow the footsteps of three of the most inspiring and influential women. However, in only two short weeks, I enter a new chapter of my life that will take place in San Luis Obispo, California as I attend Cal Poly for Environmental Earth and Soil Sciences. I will bring the passion that I have for my community with me to Southern California, however, I hope to eventually move back to Modesto after college, just as Abbey and Madison have, to continue to spread the love I have for this city. This month, I will be passing the AllAges column onto my dear friend, Grace McNamara, who is also an active member of our community. Grace has recently entered her sophomore year at Downey where she is involved in dance production, dance line, and water polo. I have full faith that Grace will capture the spirit of our town and I am excited to see what she is going to bring to the table. Best of luck Grace McNamara!

Looking For Serenity

By Mary Layton What is serenity? The Oxford dictionary defines it as: “ The state of being calm, peaceful and untroubled.” The goal of meditation is to reach a state of serenity that is when your mind is still and calm. We live in unprecedented times. Our world is changing in front of our very eyes. I find that I have an even greater need to find peace and tranquillity. But so often I feel there’s not enough time in the day for it. My mother used to tell me : “Don’t just sit there, do something!” Actually, I believe that most of us would not be so comfortable being told the opposite: “Don’t just do something, sit there!” Our culture discourages us from being still. The number of things one gets done can become the measurement of one’s personal success and selfworth. Continuous busyness becomes a compulsion. It works well for a while, but at the moment one loses one’s cool, makes mistakes and gets cranky it could be time

to look for some serenity. The question is: How does one switch gears to find it? I think it starts with a willingness to seek an activity that helps to slow down the runaway train of the mind. Put problems and emotions aside. Let go of expectations and fearful assumptions. It can be as simple as reminding oneself of what it is one is doing in this very moment, like “I’m driving, cooking, cleaning, etc.” Repetitive exercises, meditating or praying can work wonders in bringing the mind into a more tranquil place. Breathing may become deeper and fuller. Even if there’s an awareness of tension - it is a good feeling to connect with what is real. Connecting with my inner self I may discover that I am the captain of my reality. It’s up to me whether I want to stay with fearful or upsetting thoughts or whether I like to direct my mind toward peace and possibility. Staying focussed on the moment and on one activity is the key to keeping life simple and enjoyable. Whatever I had been trying to figure out about the past or the future before is no longer have a hold on my mental and physical energy. The only thing that counts is the moment I am in. It is the only thing I have any power and control over anyway. For more info go to taichi4modest.com or call(209)572-4518
