On the Cover The Modesto Children’s Museum will be a game changer for Modesto.   As we work harder to be more family and youth friendly, we need to create spaces that encourage exploration, science and interaction.  Coming soon to 11th Street soon, the MoChiMu needs You!  Please consider joining up, donating or volun teering.  Michael J Mangano captured this huge group of kids outside the future location.   Thanks to Pete Grimaldi making this magazine look great every month.

As parents, our job is to make magic and create experiences for our kids. The kids in our own families and the kids in our community.  It is really impossible to be too creative in helping our kids become creative and curious people and there is magic to be found in everything.  Working on the Graffiti USA Museum, or the new Modesto Children’s Museum or serving on the board at the Gallo Center or the State Theatre or representing kids in the court system with CASA or the Salvation Army, we can all make positive change and keep it magical and enchanting for our kids.  Thanks to people like Jake and Katie Barber who have become an amazing catalyst for change and believe in this magic.     How do we make magic?  Our kids need to know how cool our city is and there are many possibilities, so when you support our museums and the arts, you are not just investing in a building, you are investing in our education and enchantment of our kids so they learn about our culture and our his tory and appreciate growing up here.  Then the odds that they remain in Modesto or come back after going away to college, if that is their path get much higher. It is up to all of us to make this magic, create the jobs that will attract them and a place where they feel proud of and safe.   If people are proud of where they live, it shows, in our people, our attitudes and our economy.    It hardly seems like it was 15 years ago that the Gallo Center opened. I remember eating dinner at Galletto, amazed that Tony Bennett was at the next table and it was really special.  One of the most exciting things was the MAMA Awards 2007 was part of the Gallo Center opening weeks.  It was such an amazing experience for us to present this show, with all of the different genres like Moonshine Bandits, In the Absence, Good Luck Thrift store and so much more.  I think, to this date, there has never been so much variety in one night on the Gallo stage.  This month, the 2022 MAMA Awards will cel ebrate the best in our local music scene and voting begins on Sept 15.     For the last 15 years, the Gallo has provid ed a regular menu of great entertainment and the performing arts went to a new level, with our local theatre groups having a great stage to perform.  Companies like Yes Company thrived and a new era of stage performance and downtown energy began. The Prospect Theatre has grown, the Gallo Repertory has been created, the Ill List is a national caliber event and the talent level in Modesto remains high.     Vibrancy.  This is an overused word, but it is really important. One or two things doesn’t create vibrancy, it is the compilation of many things working together.  We need the cultural and educational opportunities of our new museums.  We need to com munity gathering of events like MoBand, that comes from music in the schools and neighborhood building programs. We need volunteerism in our schools and we need urban planning and ag preservation to create a business friendly region that feeds the world and attracts young and old professionals. We need so support the arts and invest in the arts so that artists and musicians can practice their profession and make a living.    We need live music as part of our culture and that is  a real challenge right now.  We are still coming out of a pandemic, we are still working hard to get everything back up to full speed and I know, with our great local businesses and our amazing ModestoView readers that get out there an make a difference, we can connect all the dots and legitimately build a vibrant community that will be strong for the  Pleasefuture. check out the Modesto Children’s Museum and take time to notice the great local businesses that have helped bring this, and our other museums to life.  Our community is grateful.   I am grateful to all of the local businesses that support ModestoView so we can continue to spread good news every single day.

With Gratitude, Chris PublisherMurphyand Founder, chrism@modestoview.comModestoView

If you are like us, the search for the deal and that unique item is half the thrill of shopping, a good thrift store like a great garage sale can be like magic. And plus, it is always fun to find a good deal. Modesto has several good thrift stores and the best are run by or give proceeds to local nonprofits in our area. This creates a win-win for you and the community. Thrift stores are the OG recycling centers keeping gently used clothes, toys and electronics along with vin tage items out of landfills. We love a good thrift store, you never know what you will find and often at unbeatable prices.

ArtAutumnFestival

The Central California Art Associate opened its 6th Annual Autumn Art Festival juried member show and fundraiser on August 16 and runs through October 15.  Show hosts the Annual fundraising Gala on September 10, in conjunction with an Online Auction, from August 20 to September 10. The link Special Judges award for “Spot” and Bill Harris’s unawarded painting, “Highway 99 Palms.” Don Hall has his award winner “Thiebaud Bakery” on the same wall as my only painting in, “Evocative” Don has other awards in Ceramics, and a great painting of Don faces the 1/6 committee. The show is worth stopping in to view several times.  All art is for sale. During Art Walk.  Rita Milone was set up on the sidewalk on Tenth Street.  Cheroot has art on the walls though not on Art Walk. The Farmacy has been stocked with artists/crafters.  Across the street, Peer Recovery Art Project is for the night and has art by Jeff Moore and others on the walls.  Up at Tresetti’s corner, Irene-Hooper Gomez had a packed crew of local artists.  I stopped to visit with  Richard J. Bradshaw and met new mosaic artist Karen Brohbot who has very interesting art. The same crew be set up next Art Walk.  I got up to Dragonfly Art for Life, a great painting in the window and talked to artist/instructor Patrick Barr before a trip to State Theatre to see Kristy Moore with artists Monica Gunderson and Princess Erica Kirkland. Chartreuse Muse, is a very strong show.  Favorites for me, are the abstract series by Aaron Buttram.  Paintings “Traiter” by Jewel Rodriguez, “Golden Child” by Jordan Jones, and “Woven” by Corey Watson hanging over Don Hall’s Raiku ceramics.  Great spot for gift shopping as well. Maggie Camps have some paintings up at Picasso’s on the J and 10th Street corner.  Always a good place to get a sandwich or cup of Coffee. Downtown recently held an open ing for the Modesto Children’s Museum, something to look for coming up. MJC art gallery will soon be opening with the new semester. Across Tully, The Kruse-Lucas gallery will feature artist Rick Ingraham in September, October and November. Besides the single painting, I have up in the current show at Mistlin Gallery, I will be one of the artists at the Poplar Avenue Pop Up Art Show at 118 Poplar Avenue, 5 to 9 PM, September 17.  By the time this issue comes out, I will have my new Coffee Cat Calendar online orders and in print in local venues.

Thank You Mark Oesau

I want to give a big Modesto shout out to Mark Oesau for his amazing contributions to high quality sound and great music in our community.  Mark has been leading the Modesto Sound team in training new sound engineers and PA specialists.   He has deliv ered amazing sound for our bands and so many others all the while he has been playing in his band A La Lune and others.  He has done the sound for the MAMA Awards for nearly the last decade and he will be missed.  Just recently, he taught a live sound class that started with National Night Out and had the final at our Third Party gig in Music in the Plaza.  What a way to learn.  We wish him good luck in his new endeavors up in the way north California.    Thanks Mark! We hope you’ve had a chance to enjoy Lumberyard Cellars by now-they’ve been open for a whole year. We can’t believe how that’s flown by! Their patio is super in viting, especially at night with all the twin kle lights. Try this slush with a charcuterie board, which features some of the best our Valley has to offer like Hilmar Cheese, Nut Up Industries, Stuyt Dairy, World Food Products, and Fiscalini Cheese. Derick and Megan Webb are a husband and wife team with a passion for wine-and they do it well. The wine is delicious, the vibe is relax ing and welcoming. They often have pop up events and feature local bands for live music, so check their facebook! We know you’ll love their sangria slushies!

Have you heard? Surla’s is back! We are sure happy the doors and patio are open for lunch and dinner again, and I am surprised we are just hearing about it! Chef John Surla was busy opening his new restaurant, Fina in Ripon. Chef John has be come one of Modesto’s leading culinary voices and is a ModestoView favorite. His namesake Surla’s has become the standard of excellent cuisine for regional dining and now Fina in Ripon will be a game changer with his fresh take on Italian plates. So you have two options for getting this delicious Fina Colada! It is topped with a passion fruit foam and honestly, I think that is a really neat treat all on its own. The cocktail is just an ABV-loaded bonus! Come try it and let us know what you think. It’s best to make a reservation. Weekdays they’re open for lunch, weekends for dinner.

The most exciting new act I met during my recent cross-country tour-managing travels is Nashville singer-songwriter & cellist Sarah Clanton. Her live set of cello-driven songs is refreshing, empowering, authentic, whimsical and witty; and her engaging performances invite audiences to join her in an escape from the ordinary. Sarah’s innova tive sound is an eclectic blend with flashes of the classically-trained pop sensibility of Norah Jones and the sultry jazzitude of Amy Winehouse. I am honored to say that I get to introduce her to Modesto’s music ap preciators on Friday 9/23 at The Dragonfly Art For Life, 1210 J St. Cello-brate with Sarah from 7:30-9:00 pm, $10 cover. Now let’s talk about the elephant in the room, the elephant sized sundae that is.  This is the legendary and famous LaPaloo za.   Party celebration? Soccer champion ship?  La Palooza.  This thing is amazing and you need a big group of people to be able to handle it.   It took the ViewCrew and a whole team of specialists to finish off this wonderful treat.   Note: Be ready, there is a lot of ice cream and toppings and you will need a smart strategy to eat it down symmetrically. This thing is a monster and has over 11 lbs of ice cream, made of all of your favorites.  This should serve 10-11 people so make sure you are ready to take on this task.   We get so excited talking about the ice cream, that we need to mention the great food.  This is a perfect lunch spot.  They make a wonderful cheeseburger that will make you smile.   Don’t pass on the French Dip with a tasty au jus.  Very dippable! If you want something lighter they have a great grilled chicken and avocado salad and even a grilled chicken sandwich.  For the kids, of course there are grilled cheese sandwiches.  They have a great lunch menu.  Really! If you are a kid, or a kid at heart, a grilled cheese sandwich and a Sundae is the way to go.  They also make a double decker grilled cheese.  Yum.   Bottom line, the service is very friendly.  Our team of Bonnie, Diana and Abby took care of a busy lunch crowd and everyone was happy.  This ice cream is out of this world and anytime of day is a good time for a sundae, split or even a cone.  I stop by with my grandson James and it is a great little break to enjoy a treat and time together. Buthere is how you can help beyond dining i n or ToGo.  You can donate to this amazing place.  I donated because I believe in what she is doing, that people need a chance and if you have a job that can be done with challenges, it needs to happen.   So please, take time and support the Ice Cream Company.  Go eat, buy gift certificates, tell your friends and donate to help this local business make a difference in our community.

When you think kids, family fun and food, there is really one answer.  You need to find a cool neighborhood place that is friendly and has what every kids likes, Ice Cream!   Yes friends, if you have been on a soccer team, girl scout event, school play, little league baseball or a just a family fun night, then you need to go directly to the Ice Cream Company.  These are the things our family grew up with and the memories are so Fortunatelygood.

Trust me, it makes the ice cream taste even better See you at the Ice Cream Company 2401 E. Orangeburg Ave. Suite 650  Modesto Photo:donatePlacewww.icecreamcompany.org @iccmodesto209-578-3112yourorderandclickthebuttonRyderEdwardsenjoysa cone.

Bonnie Acree also felt the same way, so when the Ice Cream Com pany was for sale, she bought it.  Pleasantly ironic is that Bonnie is a dental hygienist and her husband is a dentist and they now owned an ice cream company.  I say, this is perfect.  Alongthe way, she started seeing people in need that needed a good job, in particu lar her sister Diana.  Some were from the Redwood Family Center and even refugees from Afghanistan.  The jobs that she had were perfect for the employment chal lenged and special needs, whether it be cultural, medical or social. She had an idea that she could really help this community and be a place for people to re-enter the workplace.  In 2019, the Ice Cream Com pany became a non-profit and her mission went to the next level.  Now ordering ice cream feels even better than it does normally.  I truly admire what she is doing, and am amazed how well her team works.   Her sister Diana is right there with her, handling vital jobs at the Ice Cream Company.   So today, she is on the verge of getting a partnership with the Workforce Development team to help her continue this great service of job training and making tasty ice cream treats and great food.  So,the ice cream is rich and magical.  They make all of their own ice cream in house and there are so many favorite flavors as well as some surprises.  They even have vegan “ice cream” options that you an oat base and a non-dairy orange cinnamon.   Some people come in for the basic cone, but I can’t come in and get anything less than a hot fudge sundae, with REAL hot fudge.  My favorite is the coffee caramel Oreo.  Yum. So before you order, check the daily flavors and choose your favorites.  They make fresh shakes, banana splits and a variety of sundaes.

MV: What exhibits or activities are inside the museum? What will it look like?

KB:  The Modesto Children’s Museum is a place for all children! The Board has a strong commitment to Diversity and Inclu sion, and we’re being led by an incredible IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Acces sibility) committee. The exhibits and pro gramming have been designed to accom modate both English and Spanish speakers, with plans to create programs specifically made for first-generation families.  There will be dedicated low sensory hours so that children with varying sensory needs feel welcome, and our climbing structure was thoughtfully designed to have a trans fer platform on the second story entrance so that all children can experience climbing to the top!

MV: What is the timeline for the public? When do you hope to be open?

MV: How does your team believe a chil dren’s museum will be beneficial for the KB:community? We believe that making a connection in early childhood is the best way to ignite a love of learning. When we take care and invest in our children, the whole commu nity benefits! Children’s museums are very special places; they offer informal learn ing opportunities that many kids may not have access to otherwise. Activities at the museum will create excitement about learn ing, help children to make new discoveries, and let them use their imagination to go on their own adventures. The museum will be a resource for our local schools and teach ers, while it invites the whole family to be a part of their child’s education.

Rosizela Perez Jordan and Katie Barber MCM Board at a recent fundraiser

Originally from Pittsburgh, Katie has called Modesto home since 2014. She earned a degree in Biology from The Pennsylvania State University and worked as a Clinical Coordinator with the Transplant Programs at Stanford Hospital. She currently devotes her time to her children, Brooke, Matthew, and Lily, and to projects that serve the local community - particularly those that aim to improve the lives of children. In 2017, Katie and her husband Jake spearheaded a project to restore the pool and splash pad in Graceada Park as a memorial to their son Ryan. She is committed to communitydriven projects that promote programs and resources for families and children.

Katie Barber

ModestoView:  How was the idea to create a Modesto Children’s Museum started? Katie Barber:   MoChiMu was established in 2019, and has grown to what it is today because of dedicated community members giving their passion to the project! The non-profit was originally formed with 6 founding members, and has grown to an active working board of 13. The idea to create a children’s museum came from the desire to create a safe, vibrant place to bring families and children together, right here in their own backyard.

KB: We recently completed the final design of the exhibits, and are currently preparing to start fabrication.  Building construction will begin this Fall, with the installation of the exhibits scheduled for early 2023. So keep an eye out on 11th street for how the building will be changing before your eyes! We hope to be open in Summer/Fall 2023.

Modesto is the envy of many communities for our volunteer sprit. This is truly why so many of the special things happen in our community.  MoBand?  Volunteers. Gallo Center?  Volunteers.  Prospect Theatre?  Volunteers.  Graffiti USA Museum? Volun teers. Salvation Army? Volunteers. From our non-profits to our cultural experiences volunteers are the key to inspiration and are the genesis of things that can change the community. People have an experience, or see a need and this idea can turn into something magic, just like the new Modesto Children’s Museum. Katie and Jake Barber took a tragic experience in their life and turned their grief into a magical experience for other kids in Graceada Park. Now Katie and Jake are taking the imagination of kids to a new level with the Modesto Children’s Museum.   Let’s get to know Katie and see how we can bring this to life.

MV:  What have you accomplished so far with respect to fundraising? What is your initial goal to get the museum ready for

KB: visitorsOur capital campaign began in Janu ary 2021, and as of today our team has raised over $7.5 million. We are so thankful for the community response and gener osity! The start of our public campaign “Launch the Adventure!” happened last month. It was an electric day, where we finally got to share all that we have been working on behind the scenes. The kickoff of our public campaign is the invitation to the community to help us raise the final $1.5 million to get the doors open. We can’t do it without our generous supporters!

MV: How does this project promote inclu sivity, diversity, and positivity in the new immersive space?

KB:  The Modesto Children’s Museum will have 10 incredible, never-before-seen exhibits that provide children a huge ar ray of adventures. Our exhibits include a massive 25-foot climbing structure, a baby and toddler area, the beloved grocery store and café, and three different lab spaces that explore water, air, and light. The art room will be a place for messy play, art explora tion, and hands-on making. This room will also be a home base for school field trips and birthday celebrations. Our exhibits were designed to put children in charge of their own learning adventure, through creative play! In addition to the exhibits, the museum will offer an amazing variety of program ming, designed to work together with the exhibits. The water exhibit can be used to teach about irrigation and agriculture. The air lab can be activated with programming about alternative energy sources. The tod dler area will feature programming for early childhood development, or even “Baby + Me” classes, to provide support for new parents. These types of programs will be ever-changing, giving the museum endless possibilities!

MV: How can the community get in volved and help?

MV: We would love to follow the progress and stay tuned in real time! Can you share your social handles and website information for our readers?

KB:  We love connecting with the com munity, and our social media platforms are so fun to follow! You can follow us on Instagram and Facebook at @modesto childrensmuseum for real-time updates on news and events. Another important way to follow the museum’s progress is to visit our website at modestochildrensmuseum. org and sign up for our newsletter!

KB:   wait to see buses bringing groups through doors. School field trips will be an exciting way for the museum to complement the classroom curriculum.

KB: There are multiple ways the commu nity can get involved to help! We would love for those who can contribute to the campaign to help us reach our fundrais ing goal by the end of this year. The Olson Family Foundation has generously given us a matching grant, where they will match all donations dollar for dollar up to $125,000 through the end of September. For those who are able to give their time, we also welcome community members to join our team of volunteers. The Modesto Children’s Museum team is a group of passionate volunteers, and we are always looking for those with interest, time, and talent.

The Water Lab is the place to dive into the joy of wa ter through STEAM- powered discovery and creation. Prin ciples of the water cycle, irrigation, flow, gravity, and more Every once in a while, we all need to be reminded to see the whimsy, the magic and the possibilities of our world. The way a kid views the world can be good for all of us. I kind of feel like a kid a lot, my own kids keep me young at heart and I try to look at ways to bring magic to the things that we do and to work hard to create civic pride. Modesto needs more places that create magic, in music, in song, in food and even our history. Magic helps us all, and the way you understand magic is to understand the science of how things work. Making science and technology fun is called exploration. As a kid, I loved the Exploratorium in SF and taking kids to the Tech in San Jose. Now, we are on the brink of bringing this amazing explora tion to Modesto with the exciting new Modesto Children’s Museum This will be a game changer for parents and kids and our youth culture for Modesto and it will be a great new addition to Modesto’s museum community.

Don’t let the word “museum” fool you – this isn’t like any museum you’ve ever seen! You may think of museums as quiet places where you can look but not touch. However, a children’s museum is a place of exploration, adventure, and hands-on learning. And the Modesto Children’s Museum will be filled with completely original exhibits, unique to MoChiMu and the Central Valley. When doors are open, Modesto Children’s Museum will be a place where children from all walks can feel welcome, be confident in who they are, and imagine all the possibilities for their future.

The Modesto Children’s Museum has two floors, filled with never-before-seen exhibits designed specifically for our community’s children. Created for children age 0-10, with special areas dedicated to babies and toddlers, the museum will also offer a robust selection of programming led by staff, local educators, and guest instructors. Take a look at just a few of the exhibits you’ll find inside!

On the Tall Tales stage, children and families bring their stories to life through music, dance, plays, pup petry, stagecraft, and all different kinds of performing arts. This immersive experience includes a projection control station, scenery, instruments, and more.

On August 25, 2022, the US postal service issued 5 limited edition Forever stamps celebrating iconic performance coupes and convertibles that were built by US automakers to appeal to a younger generation of drivers who craved sporty, afford able cars that looked and felt different from what was in their parents’ garages. Celebrate the High Holidayswith It’s time. Can we get a break from this heat already? I know, last month, I was sing ing the songs of the Summer. I’m ready for Fall. I’m all over it. I’m picturing a very nice stroll through the downtown Modesto Certified Farmer’s Market. The weather at the market in September is still warm but the mornings bring a mildness to the mis sion. You can look forward to the bounty of the freshest produce, a nice dahlia bouquet, maybe some pumpkins and the annual ChiliAlwaysCook-Off.aconstant, always a surprise and always a welcoming feature of the market is the round-up of live music. The per formances at the market create a warm invitation and serve as a pretty cool musical score for your stroll. Jazz, Pop, Folk, Blues and all genres in and around can be found every Thursday and Saturday market day from nine to noon. The tunes flow during the rain, wind, freezing cold or blistering heat. This is a great opportunity to support local music by leaving your appreciation in the tip jar. This month features these performances9/1 Brad Brown 9/3 Patty Castillo Davis 9/8 Horatio Monroe

Distribution is in categories; Community Services approximately $8,000 includ ing Hospice, Spiritual $15,000 the largest portion, 1/3 being Christmas distributions for families in need, sponsored youth (Key Clubs) $1,000 high school grad scholar ships, $10,000, other youth services includ ing PAL and Boys and Girls Club $7,500, and the list goes on.  Essentially, $100, 000 is recharged into LOCAL priorities.  Na tional expenses are extracted from member dues. So,in June, when your travel through downtown or across McHenry is delayed for the parade, relax, smile, put on some great music and smile, knowing your inconvenience will benefit many around you, and that has always been the case.  In a crazy modern world, there is still a place for service clubs, this one is stellar.

American Graffiti Festival.  What is that?  How did it come to be?  Why is traffic so snarled around that event?  Who puts itTheseon? are all great questions, but, they all root in 1966 at the inception of the charter of the North Modesto Kiwanis Club, who met laughably at the North end of town, by today’s standards becoming another prong in the Kiwanis Modesto presence.  As philanthropy is the mission, much like Rotary and Lyons, they began to establish their signature fundraiser.  At that time, it was “chicken a go go”.  As racy as that could sound in the 1960’s and 70’s, it demurely was a chicken dinner drive through based in Graceada Park (Modesto’s Crown Jewel) where you could get dinners to go, gener ally prepaid.  A big hit and later moved to Davis Park. As the need for fundraisers increased, the NMK created a Concours D’Elegance car show.  But deep down, Modesto was a hot rod town and the home of American Graffiti.   The plan began to change the fancy car show, to a Hot Rod show, with a parade.  So, MJC East Campus accepted the show, with a Saturday morning parade that wound through downtown Modesto to the show site.  This evolved into the muchloved Friday Night Cruise Parade. The location has evolved to Muni Golf course to MJC West Campus.    It takes hundreds of volunteers to manage these shows and present great events.  What

By Steve Perry is the goal? Besides the best car show around, raising money for local charities is what it is all about. The American Graffiti Car Show and Festival has blossomed and attracts people from all over the world.  But one of the questions I get is, “Where does the money go?”  It’s a fair question.  In general the festival earns over $100,000 per year.  There are no salaries paid to anyone involved.  It is pure volunteerism and the proceeds go to local charities.

Just as it was when Children’s Park first opened over 60 years ago, the Modesto Children’s Museum was launched to much fanfare and excitement. With support from the community, it too will become a valuable asset providing our youth with an interactive outlet for creativity and adventure.

Fundraising efforts are now underway to create a wonder ful community resource for our area’s youth: the Modesto Children’s Museum. When opened this will become a goto place for young Modestans and kids from throughout our region, giving them a local destination for interac tive learning through creative exhibits and fun activities. But long before this idea was came to fruition, Modesto had an earlier outdoors predeces sor with the same goal of getting kids out of the house and inviting curious creative minds to explore and go on make-believe adventures. This of course was Modesto’s Chil dren’s Park, which was carved out of Beard Brook Park and opened to the public in 1960. Opening day of Children’s Park on July 30th, 1960 was attended by an estimated 2,500 kids and parents. The idea for the park was first conceived by Schuyler Reid Hafely, a local landscape architect, and three years of extensive planning and work was aided by project sponsorship from over 20 local service clubs and organiza tions including the Lion’s Club, local Ex change Clubs, and local Kiwanis Clubs. The new park in Modesto was intended for the enjoyment and use by all kids in our area, so mayors from surrounding towns and the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors were there for the unveiling along with City officials.Uponentering the castle gate entry into the park, kids were greeted by a playground that was truly a product of its time – a park that provided those who entered a nod to wild west towns of old, an embrace of modernism, and a look to the future. Aside from quintessential playground structures like swings, spiral slides and a wading pool, Children’s Park included some exciting fixtures and attractions that allowed for hands-on play and for imaginations to run wild. Children could play amongst a scaled-down western frontier town, or play in an “apartment house” jungle gym. For the more tangible adventure, an authentic de-commissioned Navy jet and Santa Fe Railroad steam engine provided an oppor

That is why it is important for us to remember some valu able essentials needed for outdoor fitness. Although not as common as it is in August we can still have high temperatures that reach  100 degrees in the Fall. Protect yourself from those danger ous ozone rays and the direct sunlight that can age you faster than time itself. Always remember to apply a healthy dose of sunscreen to your body and a special sunscreen to your face that won’t clog your pores. I’m sure many of us enjoy having that nice bronze tan. Unfortunately, that tan can be detrimental not only to the appearance of our skin as we age but can lead to a skin cancer known as melanoma. I like to also recommend a visor instead of a hat. This allows heat to escape the top of your head and keeps the body cooler. Of course, you need to add to all that some Fitness Essentials By Efren Martinez UV sunglasses and bright clothing to make yourself more visible to passing vehicles. But wait there’s more! mosquito repel lant is a super important vital essential. Mosquitoes are known to carry some of the most dangerous viruses such as West Nile, Zika, Chikungunya and Malaria. So before going out either in the early morning or at dusk make sure you apply a good mosquito repellant. This is best applied after your sunscreen to all exposed skin.

What’s up, Modesto? I hope you have all enjoyed your summer, and are settling into the new school year. September is one of my favorite months because it means that football games are starting. It’s so fun to come to support my school’s team at Downey high school. I also get the privilege to dance during halftime at our home games with Downey Danceline. Our Dance team has been around for almost 13 years, and it is my favorite extracurricular. It’s awesome to have our school come together and cheer on our fellow Knights. Whether you’re an alumnus, parent, or sibling, be true to your school and support the team. Anyone is welcome to any high school football game. Be there at 7 pm!

The beautiful center has been around since 2007. Our generous community has helped establish the Gallo center as the amazing arts and entertainment center it currently is. It has served over a million students and patrons since its opening. I have even had the amazing opportunity to perform there multiple times. There are several off-Broad way shows. There is a new broadway show tour happening right now. The first show is “Cats!” I have already purchased my tickets for the show, and I can’t wait. The show is on September 17th. There will also be a 15th anniversary gala on September 24th. There will also be a “to kill a mockingbird” production from September 30th until October 8th. I hope you all look into see ing a show at this gorgeous center. Have a wonderful September, Modesto. Saying goodbye to Summertime is always hard, but then Ms M remembers there is a ton of wonderful things to welcome with fall. There’s plenty of pumpkin spice drinks and decor, falling of the colored leaves and the excitement of the new season with all of its events to enjoy.  So wave goodbye to that summertime sadness and say hello to some of the bargains that are coming your way this fall. Kick off the month with great music! Tongue and Groove host their monthly acoustic jam at P. Wexford’s Pub on Sep tember 9th from 8 pm to 11 pm.  Join them as they jam out your favorite songs with a few surprises. Enjoy the sounds and cheer while you sample the Pub’s offerings. Modesto Art Museum welcomes you to travel back in time about 150 years to enjoy the history and ephemera of Modesto and the Southern Pacific Railroad. Join historian Jean-Guy Dubé, on September 15th, for a discussion of the Southern Pacific Railroad depots, where he will share about the design and history of some of Modesto’s railroad depots and others in the San Joaquin Valley. The hour-long event is free and open to the public at the Centre Plaza Ballrooms. 7 pm. More info:Most of life is spent at home so why not enjoy it? Starting those fall preparations for those upcoming holiday celebrations is a great idea, especially when it comes to home improve ment. The Modesto Fall Home Improvement Show gives homeowners and renters alike, the wonderful chance to col lect information, participate in demos, talk to vendors and ask for ideas on their home improvements.

The event returns to the Centre Plaza on September 16th-18th from 10 am-5 pm. Early bird tickets are available. Tickets: $5 GA. 55+: $3 Vets: $2. Celebrate and do some good with one of Modesto’s favorite events, the 36th annual Edible Extravaganza. The annual event re turns on September 29th at Venue 833! This is one of the Central Valley’s beloved char ity events, because, just showing up and enjoying yourself does a lot of good. Guests are delighted with fine beverages and cuisine paired with entertainment for an incredible bargain. Event tickets are about the cost of a night out pm the town, with the added bonus of raising funds for the Center for Human Services which serve Stanislaus County youth and families. 6-9 pm. $60.00 GA. $120 VIP.

The ChildInner accompanied that no matter old I am I can still feel like a kid!  That’s why I am so thrilled about the open ing of a Children’s Museum in Modesto! I look forward to seeing works of art created by children. They will inspire me, I am sure! Children have the advantage of not rack ing their brains like adults do. They don’t take things so seriously. When they make a picture they just make a picture without secretively hoping it could be a masterpiece. They just enjoy themselves and paint with out the inhibition that we encounter later in life. Always that worry, is it good enough, is it perfect? Or even, will it sell?

The Merriam - Webster Definition defines the “Inner Child” as “the childlike usually hidden part of a person’s personality that is characterized by playfulness, spontaneity, and creativity usually

Most children look at the world with different eyes. They don’t read things into anything. Things are the way they are, or the way they imagine them to be. So much is just in having fun while painting. It takes no effort. My inner child wishes to find this freedom again!
