EDITOR’S Greetings Modesto Fans!

It has been 45 years since the Summer of Love! But the cool thing is that the Summer of

Love is back and better than ever. History and has been romanticized and now a new generation is celebrating global togetherness. Modesto will take a trip back in time in August where we have Barry McGuire (“McGuinn and McGuire just keep getting higher”) telling his 60’s stories and singing the songs we remember, ModStock will take over Graceada Park with Modesto’s own festival of Peace Love and Music and the Modesto originated and global critically band Grandaddy returns for a secret local warm up show, and then sets out on the road performing around the globe beginning at OutsideLands. Over 15,000 people will be enjoying their own Summer of Love at X Fest, our annual huge summer music and fun festival in Downtown Modesto. So while the tomato trucks race around our community as our amazing agriculture feeds the world, our local music feeds our ears and our local community loaded with culture and great people feed our souls. Yes indeed, it is the Summer of Love for so many different reasons. This month, we get to know our Modesto Mayor Marsh as he shares with us his vision for Modesto and how we can all help feed our civic culture and make Modesto vibrant andstrong. It is really going to be a fun month for everyone… except for the kids that have to go back to on Aug 7, the earliest ever for the traditional school year. Be careful, drive careful, and ride your bike carefully. School is so very important. In all of my research for the Modesto Historic Cruise Route, it became so very clear the huge role high school can play. The clubs, the good times, the friendships that are forged with school spirit that will last forever. Make it count and get some good tips from the All Ages Pages this month and be true to your school. I want to make a special thanks to our writers, advertisers and supporters for helping bring ModestoView to the people of our community. Welcome to August in Modesto! By ModestoFamous / Lauren Porras I’m co-writing this again with my daugh-

ter this month because of my broken arm. It has been very nice to work with her. We managed to have a great time in July and we are looking forward to an exciting August. The elephant in the room this month is obviously X-Fest. In just a few days, the streets of Modesto will be populated by a massive raucous crowd on a mission to keep the party going well into the night. Personally, I have never really been a big fan of X-Fest but I am really excited about this year. I think that Chris Ricci and his army of promoters and planners have their finger on the right trigger this time around. It seems like they are trying to give X-Fest a bit of an overhaul and the highlights that we have heard about seem like they will be a lot of fun. No matter what you are into, there should be something for you to enjoy X-Fest this year. Make sure to pack your bikini for the wild foam party, plan for a possible alien abduction when the Dancetronauts land their spaceships downtown, watch out for flying chairs as pro wrestlers take over and be prepared to wear all your favorite ling and get loose with Paul Wall and Twista. I’m really excited about seeing the Moonshine Bandits bring their crew back to downtown Modesto. These guys have had an amazing

year full of success and accolades and it will be nice to celebrate with them in person. What we really need to do as a community this month is support all the venues and small businesses that rely on us. Rock fans will appreciate the return of Theory of a Deadpan to Modesto Centre Plaza on August 7th, art fans will have another opportunity to converge on the streets during the Third Thursday Art Walk on August 16th, movie fans will see plenty of indie films during the course of the month at the State Theatre and Brenden Theatre will serve up the debuts of Total Recall, The Expendables 2, Paranorman and Jeremy Renner’s The Bourne Legacy. Hollywood is really keeping an eye on this film to see if Renner can hold his own as a marquee name. Most of his other films have seen him surrounded by some of the

biggest stars in the industry. I hope he does well. It has been exciting to watch his rise to fame. Challenge yourself to give downtown Modesto at least one night or day of your time this month. Take your whole family to a Farmer’s market, a museum, outdoor concert or allow them to explore McHenry Mansion. Take someone special and enjoy dinner on an outdoor patio and a long walk. Do what you can to get to know the place that you call home. You know how I feel about Modesto. I would love for others to enjoy it as much as I do. It is the midst of summer, and the down-

town galleries and art places remind you their space is air conditioned. Good places to “chill”, enjoy the art and even find a hot buy. New shows at Gallery 909, Paper Planes, and the Valley Sun Catchers at Mistlin Gallery with companion show featuring 3D found objects. Over at Tresetti’s, Mistlin Gallery has a celebrity bartender fundraiser, August 2, 5 to 9 pm. If dining, or drinking mention your support for Mistlin Gallery, and add tips to jar to add to the Central California Art Association operating funds and its support for Art education and local artists. . Check out the hot new Aaron Vickery mural at Serrano Social Club, and the new club layout and décor. Tony has made the Club ever more interactive. Other art still rotates downstairs and the upstairs loft, so grab a cup of Joe at the least and check it out. The “Emergence” show at Chartreuse Muse has been a success commercially as well as fine new group show. Several pieces apparently sold at the July Art Walk. August is the last month to see this one, as the Muse celebrates its Tenth anniversary in September, with duo show by partners Sandra Veneman, and Ellen Roehne. A couple new spots started showing art in July. Center Stage Conservatory in lower level of the once City Mall at J and 11th, has some of my art up in the concessions area for their production of Two Gentleman of Verona, and the theater group plans to feature more artists in the future. Holden hosted the Beatnik Artist Guild show at his home studio, and Aaron Rowan featured visual artists in his July 14th music show at Deva. No matter how you like your coffee, from French pressed, espresso, iced (cold pressed for 24 hours), or the ever popular cool you down, or flavored “blended coffee crush”, this is a fabulous place to enjoy it. Yes! It’s locally roasted coffee and brewed fresh daily, but you know I need something to go with it! “Breakfast panini please, and perhaps I should try one of those luscious Belgian waﬄes since I’m here!” Just saying! Rose and Vince Lentini owners of the Old Plantation Coffee and Café opened this feeling of home establishment in March of 2011 with the warm intentions to make every customer feel like a special guest in their own home. Some patrons look like they are dining in their own home oﬃce. As Rose and I chatted in the outdoor patio I was delighted by her friendly smile and impressed that she knew more than half the patrons by name. She even knew Sam, the big fluffy dog who is a regular at the dog friendly patio seen chomping down the free doggie treats. Equally refreshing was to see the staff more than simply serving the delicious menu items, as they all appeared to be enjoying their interactions with each other and the customers. OPCC employs 8 cheerful people, including “Day One” Dena Atta! Yes she has been there from day one! I actually live in this neighborhood and I’m thrilled the next time, likely tomorrow (lol), when I have a craving for a real burger; I can get one freshly made to order right in this local café! It gets better, even a PESTO burger, yep-yep!! The pesto chicken panini is the most popular amongst customers,

so I tried it with an OPCC signature salad with a sassy raspberry vinaigrette dressing, feta cheese, dried cranberries, walnuts, and my favorite, chopped bacon. In a word, Dana~licious! OPCC also has a different homemade specialty soup each day; I can’t wait to try the split pea with yams! With so many diverse needs when it comes to food and drink, I’m happy to report that OPCC also has several gluten free, sugar free, and vegan items on their variety packed menu. Parent friendly too, as the kid’s menu has healthier choices, smaller portions and lower prices! Yes, I will bring my laptop, log in to the free wi-fi and I will call it a work related! I’m thinking it’s now a tasty tax write-off ?! Jason Lytle Grandaddy Reunion.. No Longer on Standby, Now it’s On. By Chris Murphy I was so very excited when I got the sneak peak teasers from OutsideLands Festival. Could it be true? They had posted an Instagram pic of Grandaddy on their line up. Yes, I learned it was true, after breaking up a few years ago, Grandaddy was back. Was it one show or more? It was a global tour. The band that created The Crystal Lake, Jed the Humanoid, He’s Simple, He’s Dumb, He’s the Pilot, Levitz, Jeez Louise, AM180 and so many other globally acclaimed hits were back. Created in Modesto by songwriter Jason Lytle and band mates, Jim Fairchild, Kevin Garcia, Aaron Burtch, and Tim Dreyden, Grandaddy for many years was known all around the world, playing for 50,000 people in Brazil and other huge festivals and returning to Modesto playing for 100 lucky locals at the Dirty Duck (now Speakeasy). Music critics loved the musical creations that were showcased in albums like Under The Western Freeway, Software Slump, Sumday, and Just Like the Fambly Cat on the V2 label and a variety of handmade tapes and CDs beginning in 1992. Grandaddy broke up in 2006, Jason moving to Montana and the rest going their separate ways, Jim recording as All Smiles and a guitarist for Modesto Mouse and Aaron in Good Luck Thift Store. You don’t know what the future holds for Grandaddy, but for 2012 they are back together and we have a few shows and maybe this will inspire more Grandaddy music. We caught up with Jason Lytle as they were doing their summer prep for the tour. ModestoView: What made you decide to reunite the band and take your show around the world? Jason Lytle: Money, money, ....and money. No, Im’ just kidding (sort of). Actually just last year Jim Fairchild and I had been talking a bit and hammering out some details for an anniversary reissue we were working on for our album “The Soph-

tware Slump”. It kept coming up as a possibility, or something we might consider if it sounded fun and if there was enough money involved to make it worth our while. The Outside Lands offer arrived in our lap and we said “well, as long as we are rehearsing and making the effort we may as well throw in a few more shows”. When the word got out (in the industry) that we were reforming for shows, a barrage of offers started coming in. With the help of some trusted people, we settled on the best offers, plotted a course, and began figuring out how to play all of our songs again. MV: What or who inspires you now? JL: Other than watching the Kardashians on my 60 inch plasma TV in my boxers, with the new Katy Perry blasting on the Bose, while twittering on my Iphone with Doritos fingers, I enjoy spending as much time as possible outdoors .....often hiking, running, biking, skiing, or perhaps just staring at a rock. As far as music...Clint Eastwood is my favorite guitar soloist. MV: Is there a Grandaddy song that you would like to re-record in a different way? JL: We have one called “Laughing Stock” off of Under the Western Freeway that I envisioned being a sort of Neil Young SciFi epic at one point. I don’t think the recording quite captured that. So given the opportunity, I might take another crack at that one. MV: Is there a city or country that you have wanted to perform in that you haven’t? JL: New Zealand. I’ve been to Australia twice so that makes it even more frustrating and/or elusive. It just has everything I look for in an “ideal island recreational paradise”. So yeah....either New Zealand or Westley.

Grandaddy at the Ranch MV: How are you different now since you took this time off and relocated? JL: A while back I coined a phrase “living in Montana has made me hardy rather than hardened”. I actually left the Central Valley because I needed a break from the crime, drugs, pollution, paranoia, and the destitution that is all too prevalent and visible here. I mean....there are plenty of wonderful and charming aspects of this area as well. But I was having a hard time seeing the good stuff and I was just worn out and a little too overly sensitive to everything. I didn’t want to become hardened to the negativity. So I moved somewhere where the quality of life is much different. The winters are brutal and the terrain can be unforgiving. In this way I have become hardier. If and when I leave Montana, I will be grateful for that. MV: Do you miss wakeboarding in our canals? JL: Canal surfing, taking the bus to vintage faire, keggers on Litt Road,

A documentary that The New York Times devoted a full page to in its weekly section on film and entertainment, Queen of Versailles, opens Aug. 11, and promises a wild ride through a world of excess and a corresponding fall from grace for a billionaire couple building the largest home in the United States (90,000 square feet, to be exact). It’s a parable for our times, and it’s also an epic with all of the Sturm and Drang of a Shakespearean tragedy. Fresh from Sundance and Cannes, Beasts of the Southern Wild, opens Sat. Aug. 25. Cast with unknowns, the film is set in the Bathtub, a low-lying Louisiana Gulf Coast island whose dirt-poor residents have a precarious, unfettered off-the-gridlife. Of course there are classics screened at The State, such as Raiders of the Lost Ark (Sat. Aug. 18) resented by the Modesto Film Society and the Cinema Club. the Rockabilly shows have been some of the most fun things happening around here, I though I would ask some of our locals “What do you think of the Rockabilly Scene?” We got some great answers and learned how passionate people are about our music. “I love the rockabilly scène in the valley and it is more than just a blend of the 50s sound of blues, country and gospel, but the style and culture that has moved to a modern era where hot rods, poodle skirts and tattoos seem to belong together.” I think it is exciting to know that rockabilly in valley is finding its way back home again, where it all started!” ~ MJ

Gallo Center Season is a winner!

For me I’ve always been looking for the real raw sound of rock and roll. When I found Rockabilly it was as close too pure as I have yet to find and that’s why I love it. ~Devon Rockabilly was my rebellion from my parents’ music (Van Halen, AC/DC, etc.) - I ran to Sinatra and NPR and pretty quickly ran headfirst into rockabilly and roots. For me, it’s that sense of what’s right in my soul. Music that actually has a soul. . Unlike all this top 40 business. I’ve always had an aﬃnity and passion for mid-century, and when I found the music to match, it felt right. For me, it’s hearing the upright and feeling my heart right along side. It’s breathing and sighing, drinking and making love. It’s all the things my heart and soul craves. ~ Tess I love Rockabilly!! Its just energetic, and usually the musicians are very talented, and I love watching a musician who knows what they are doing. ~ Stephen The music...for me is the best. The rockabilly scene is fun to watch...but sometimes a little pretentious...but still fun to watch. ~ Anonymous Great heritage here, should have a spot on the walk of fame. ~ Jennifer I dig the Rockabilly scene. I wish I knew more about the culture. The Rockabilly Culture has been in existence since the late 40’s. It kind of evolved in the underground.

The music is so upbeat and energetic, but with a little old school swing for some class. I just love it! ~ Florinda I think it’s a fantastic style of music and wish I could be in a rockabilly band! ~ Jojo Rockabilly is so much more then the classy chicks in high heels, shiny bright hot rods, slicked backed hair. For me it is the passion and drive the musicians have slappin’ the bass and beating the hell out of there three piece drum set. The sultry voice that carries a tune to make your heart beat faster. A passion that will not die…for some they don’t like it and I believe it is because the just don’t understand the roots of it all. ~Anonymous

Wow, what a wild and crazy way to start off the 2012/2013 season at the Gallo Center. The legendary Steve Martin, in full comedic bluegrass splendor will be one of the most anticipated performances at the Gallo Center. This season has so many things for nearly everyone in our community, from Crobsy, Stills Nash, the B52’s, West Side Story, Defending the Caveman, Dreamgirls, Rain, Rock of Ages, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shrek The Musical. Don’t delay getting tix as some of the big events for this season are selling out. People have asked me if the Gallo center is truly committed to our local arts and events. The answer my friends is 100% YES! Take for example in July, on one stage YES company production of Willy Wonka and on the other stage an incredible performance from MariRose Powell, our own local musician. Our downtown restaurants were busy before these performances and people are coming from all over the region to enjoy our local talent. Bravo Gallo Center.

Most importantly, we need to look what the Gallo Center has done for our community at large. It has delivered on its promises to connect the people in Modesto, linking kids to the arts, to bring world-class performances to our citizens, attracting people from all over the central valley to Downtown Modesto to see amazing and engaging performances. Artists from all over the world get a taste of downtown Modesto and enjoy our hospitality. Our hotels and restaurants are busy when there is an event at the Gallo or the State Theatre. Arts and entertainment are an economic boost for Modesto as well as culturally splendid. So what now? Buy tickets for an event. Tell a friend to check out a show. Take a friend to a show. If you are not a member of the Gallo Center supporters, please consider it. Become of Friend of the center and there is a donor level for any budget. You will help change the way people look at Modesto and help create civic pride, as well as get a great concert or show and you will help our local economy grow with every visit.

What’s New in Town on the Music Horizon By Eric Benson Hey folks, what’s new in town on the mu-

sic horizon? Well the State Theatre spearheaded by Sweet Sue Richardson is making some changes to help make the State more accessible to local musicians and artists. She has raised the issue of changing to a format of more local openers challenging the dictates from established music agencies. She also now has a dedicated email so bands can submit videos and promo material for consideration to the State as well as creating a subcommittee of local promoters and artists to have input into the process. The hope is that this creates a venue to support low cost shows for local artists, a mutual benefit for all, yea! An example of this was seen with the recent Future Rock show with Kid Charlemagne, a great draw, Johnny and Kelly, Hair Kari, and others. It was promoted through the ModestoView channels and other promoters and had a good turnout featuring some of our best local acts. So give Sue some love and support the State because I believe it is one of our best community centers for the arts. McHenry Museum is 100 Years Old! The McHenry Museum’s (formerly the McHenry Library) building is celebrating one hundred years. It was dedicated as Modesto’s first library on April 29, 1912. On August 25, there will be a Western Barbecue. This is a fundraiser to benefit the museum. The cost will be $50.00. Trippin the 60s with McGuire Barry McGuire

It has been nearly fifty years since Barry

McGuire shocked the music world with his surprise hit “Eve of Destruction”. This song, loaded with angst, fear and worry was a #1 hit in September of 1965, was a big departure from the songs of the New Christy Minstrels. Barry joined the Minstrels in 1962 and went solo in ’65. Barry recorded and performed throughout the ’60 with members of the Byrds, Mamas and the Papas, the Association and many more writhing songs like Green, Green and others. Barry played the critically acclaimed lead “Claude” in the Broadway smash hit HAIR. In 1970, Barry hit bottom and discovered Christianity and a whole new path and life opened for Barry. He tours and performs with many of his 60s friends today and takes his amazing story on the road called “Trippin’ the ‘60s” with former Byrd John York. This show will be Aug 24 at the Seasons at 7 pm. This is a FREE event and will be benefitting Hope Haven International. Let’s meet Barry McGuire: ModestoView: What do you think was the biggest change that came out of the 60s? Barry McGuire: Without a doubt the traditional family infrastructure was deeply damaged producing single mothers who gave birth to a house full of children, with each one having a different father. MV: Did you ever expect the Eve of Destruction to be such a big hit? Barry: Absolutely not! I really liked what it had to say, but I had no idea it was going to strike the American psyche the way it did. As a result of “Eve’s” popularity, I thought we were going to change the world, but then “Hang On Sloopy” took “Eve’s” place as the number one tune in the nation, so our social awareness was short-lived to say the least MV: What was your most memorable performance during the 60s? Barry: Without a doubt, performing the male lead with the original Broadway cast

of “Hair” on Broadway was the most fun I had during that entire decade. MV: Which one of your songs as most withstood the tests of time? Out of all the songs recorded Barry: In the sixties, “Eve of Destruction” is probably more valid today than it was when it charted in the summer of ‘65. If anyone would like to hear an updated version of the tune with new lyrics written by Phil Sloan, the original author, they can go to youtube.com and type Eve 2012 into the Search engine. MV: Is there a event from the 60s that you wish you could do over? Barry: Not really. Most of life is just learning what not to do, and if you survive the experience, (which many of my friends didn’t) then you can look back and think, “Man, was that the stupidest thing I’ve ever done or what, I never want to do that again.” It’s all a learning curve. MV: What advise would you give to people that wish they had grown up in the 60s? Barry: Well, like my friend, Owen Orr used to say, “Most people have one foot in tomorrow and the other foot in yesterday, and they’re urinating all over today.” So my advice to all is, “Just live in the moment giving it all of our energy and attention. Barry: Once again, my idea of a perfect day is when I can address each unfolding frame of time as a sacred experience, knowing it has never happened before and will never happen again. If I can stay ‘in the moment’ from the time I open my eyes in the morning until I close them in the evening, that for me would be the perfect day. Oh yeah, and I do love my backyard garden, and I spend as many moments in it as I can.

This event will be a beneﬁt for Hope Haven International Hope Haven International Ministries (HHIM) is a leader for refurbishing, manufacturing, and distributing wheelchairs to children and adults in desperate need around the world. Healthcare professionals and volunteers participate in global distributions to ensure proper fit of the wheelchairs. Wheelchairs are sponsored by individuals and partnering agencies, such as Rotary Clubs, to deliver the gift of mobility. Over 90,000 wheelchairs have been delivered since HHIM’s inception in 1994. Lonny Davis of Hope Haven West is promoting the Barry McGuire event and just returned from Oaxaca, Mexico on July 30th. Here are some of this thoughts. “Fresh from a distribution of 200 pediatric wheelchairs, my mind is filled with images of kids and families who have just had their lives dramatically changed as a result of receiving the gift of mobility. Parents weeping for joy with the realization that their child will have opportunity for education, socialization and access to the community previously unavailable. Kids dancing in their chairs with the realization that they may now move themselves for the first time in their lives. A community rallied around disabled children, service organizations (Rotary Clubs) banded together to provide assistance to the poorest of the poor and serve “the least of these”.

arrad Marsh was born and raised in Modesto. His family arrived here in the early 1900s farming land in North Modesto. Garrad served in the US Navy with Top Secret clearance on nuclear submarines and later attended MJC and UC Berkeley (Go Bears!) earning both BA and Masters Degrees. He has brought his love of community and his expertise back to Modesto after college. He and his family have created a successful bowling business that began in 1959 and serves as President and CEO of McHenry Bowl, employing over 50 people. He is experienced in the entertainment and sporting industry as well as community service and volunteerism. He was active raising a family with his wife Dallas and has 4 kids and 5 grandkids. While promoting and running a business and managing property. His goal was to put his business experience and love of Modesto to work in his role as the Mayor or Modesto. He came into oﬃce during a very challenging time, and while Modesto faces challenges, Modesto also has the opportunity to become an amazing city. How will this all happen? Let’s get to know Mayor Marsh: ModestoView: Modesto has many of the same challenges of other cities, but what do we need do to differently to make us a winning city! Mayor Marsh: More than anything, I think that Modesto, its citizens and business leaders, need to recognize how wonderful this city is. It is about our perception of ourselves. I have lived in Honolulu, Berkeley, Virginia, and Connecticut. I have visited every state except Alaska. I have travelled to nearly 100 countries. While there are many great communities in the world, this is the one where I want to live. We have a great, friendly city because of its sense of community, its vibrant range of the arts, and our agriculture. It is about our churches

and places of worship, civic organizations, non-profits, and so many individuals who volunteer and work together to make this community better. We do have problems that if solved will make us even better. One is, we need more law enforcement. We must have a safe (safer) community to attract jobs and business, to thrive, to have a better quality of life. I will be working hard this next year or two to find ways to make this happen.

It can be accomplished by partnering to develop tutor or mentoring programs, encouraging parents to become involve in their children’s and grandchildren’s education, working to develop a volunteer base at every school. Education is strongly correlated to our standard of living, to wage earning and to having a workforce that employers want and need. MV: How important are the arts and entertainment for a successful downtown Modesto? MM: The cultural aspects of the city core are of utmost importance to not only a successful downtown but a vibrant community. Even more important though is bringing downtown housing into the mix. With activity you have a level of safety, a level of liveliness that changes the downtown into a 24 hour area, not one that is devoid of people after work. Our downtown is the best in the valley; housing will make it even better.

MV: Modesto is known around the world as the home of American Graffiti, how should we take this to the next level and really make it a global calling card? MM: Modesto is American Graffiti. We need to have this as a significant theme when looking at attracting visitors. Our Kiwanis Club rescued our June activities; we need to help them to stay successful and to find ways to expand on their activities. Most people do not know why Cannery Row of Monterey is significant, but they still visit it. People do not need to know about the movie “American Graffiti” but with classic cars drawn here, people will visit Modesto. We’ve taken the first steps toward making us Graffiti USA, but we have much more that can and should be done. MV: What was one of your most memorable experiences growing up in Modesto? MM: Almost all of my early experiences centered around my family and one of our bowling alleys. My Dad worked 7 days a week, home for dinner and back to work. So I spent most of my free time at Modesto Bowl. Most afternoons, I would join my

By the time I was teen, it was riding my bike, way out in the country to McHenry Bowl. But if I could pick one experience, it was when I was playing a game of pinball, something I grew up doing. I had figured out that if put the game legs up on my toes I could control the game better, hence winning more free plays. My Dad caught on to what I was doing and came over and leaned on the machine with all of his weight and casually carried on a conversation with me as I grimaced. Never again did I put the game on my toes. MV: If you could speak with one other

world leader for inspiration and direction, who would it be? MM: Hillary Clinton. MV: What do you think your most challenging issue has been since taking office and what are you doing to overcome and complete it. MM: While there have been a variety of pressing matters, from the budget to employee negotiations, from MID issues to SIFA to concerns from citizens, but the most challenging issue has been finding the time to move my goals forward. However, now that the budget in completed and several of the other matters are stabilized, I see that I will be better able to allot the time needed to move my agenda forward. MV: Describe your perfect Modesto day. MM: All perfect days start with my wife, Dallas. Cooking breakfast together and reading the Modesto Bee over coffee (me) and tea (Dallas) as we do the crossword – in ink – together. Then spending the day outside, maybe at one our great parks, riding our bikes, stopping by McHenry Bowl to check-up on things. Dining together with some of our family or friends at one of our local restaurants. Off to the Gallo Center to see “YES Company” perform. Then finishing with a glass of wine downtown after the performance. MV: Bowling is the classic retro sport, do you think that this classic spirit can be applied to other things here in Modesto? MM: I think Modesto is a classic city. We have parks throughout our city, the Gallo Center, our own ball team – the Nuts, MoBand, Picnic at the Pops, the Mansion and Museum, the original Graffiti cruise – I could go on and on. We have it, we need the world to know it. MV: How many perfect games have you bowled? MM: I have bowled 11 perfect (300) games. Also, I have two 800 series’ (a more difficult feat.) MV: What one thing would you want each person in Modesto to do if you could ask them? MM: Every person can help to make Modesto better in some way. about. First of all one of the biggest topics of conversation this month as per usual this time if the year is the annual X-Fest event. For the 2nd year in a row we get a metal stage at X-Fest. Despite some controversy concerning bands on this stage and the voting process that was held for the coveted spots, this is an epic stage with local bands such as American Witch, Cursed, Forever Obscured, Blackwoods and of course 2011 Mama Award winners Nothing But Losers among others. This year’s metal stage is definitely one of the best stages ever booked at X-fest. Another topic of interest is the return of the band Sworn to The Black featuring former members of the band SEIP and now featuring former And All Was Lost singer Kirk Salazar. After a short break from the scene these local heavyweights return to

the scene August 17th at The Clarion Hotel here in Modesto with such bands as Cursed, Blackwoods, Brutal Innocence from Los Banos, and Forever Obscured. This should be one of the best shows of the year. And Finally our last topic this month is the highly successful US Tour of Modesto locals Better Left Unsaid & Warpath Assassins. BLU, regular touring veterans did something rare in our scene they brought out one of their favorite home town metal bands Warpath Assassins. “I could get used to this!!” said WPA bassist Crusher via text message when asked how the bands 1st tour was going. With stops in Southern CA, Arizona, New Mexico & Texas these two bands killed it 209 style!! That’s it for me this month as always “Keep one foot in the gutter and one fist in the gold!! “

tral Valley is booming. Since we ‘re in the middle of festival season I decided to feature an upcoming festival: Sheatherfest III. Sheatherfest is an annual event that takes place over a course of a few days at various venues between Modesto and Knights Ferry, such as the Cow Track Lounge and The Rivers Edge. The Festival is named after our beloved friend from England Dave Sheather. Dave has long been an avid music enthusiast and collector. His thirst for music combined with his background in radio has allowed him to experience a vast amount of music throughout his years. His musical journey eventually led him to The Central Valley. Sheatherfest I was held in celebration of

Willy Tea is one artist playing SheatherFest from the film “Kingdom of Survival.” Dave’s first visit to the Valley by a group of musicians who greatly admired him. The first one was such a blast that they decided to do it every year. Some of the previous performers include Soda, The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit, Tom V, Larry and His Flask. This year the festival will be held Sept 7-9. The lineup has not yet been finalized, however, some of the bands that have already been announced are Willy Tea, The House of Orange, The Harmed Bros and Bloody Ol’ Mule. andy Taylor-Weber is a music producer, songwriter & owner of ‘Galaxy Freestyle Records’ records. In the late 90’s he produced “In a Dream” by Jossette and later covered by Rockell hit # 1 in over 25 states. Till this day he continues his music career unleashing new singles and promoting events.

Interview: I’ve played the piano since I was 7 years old, as I grew up I got more attached to music, it made me want to absorb everything about the music industry. Many people don’t know I Do’s in my high school years. When I got my first job, I started selling keyboards and we’d gather crowds in the store, people constantly would tell me ‘hey you should put a record out’. I thought it was a great idea, so we created ‘Galaxy Freestyle Records’ From there we had over 15 recording artists on the label at one time. A song that I wrote and produced, called “In a Dream” by Jossette and later covered by Rockell, hit # 1 in over 25 states. At one point my co-producer (Lenny “Linus” Douglas) and I were working on remix tracks for Usher, Pink, Alicia Keys & more. The music industry changed a lot during the 2000’s and music was turning more urban and hip-hop. With us being a dance-oriented label, it was really hard to stay afloat in the music business. In 2011, I was seeing how dance music started making a comeback, so I decided to come out with a new song called “Take me back to Vegas” that features my newest artist ‘Mogli’. Tell us about your past single & most resent? The biggest song by far has been “In a Dream” by Jossette & Rockell, other notable tracks were “Forever” sung by our 3 girl group Emotion in Motion. Boogie your Body was sung by Modesto/Newman’s own “Daisey”. Other artists included Julissa, Sabrina, Yolanda and more. Currently we’re working with Mogli for “Take me Back to Vegas” and

Lina Santiago on future tracks. How did you come up with the idea for “Take me back to Vegas”! I’ve been working in the nightlife scene for the past 6 years, and I met Santiago Acosta, aka ‘Mogli’. He started helping me promote events in the south bay area and then had an opportunity of a lifetime in September 2010. We got to fly anywhere in the United States for 30 days through a JetBlue promotion and as we ventured across the U.S. and I found this guy had a passion for music that didn’t go un-noticed. He then showed me his take of the song “Take me back to Vegas”. I felt there was a lot of promise in the song, except that it really needed to be produced to the next level. Lenny Lines Douglas and I started the song from scratch and recreated the music and Mogli supplied the lyrics, and the rest is history

I hear there is word of yet another single? Yes we have a second song ready to go, about 80% completed. With the success of “Take me back to Vegas”, were holding back a little bit as that song continues to move across the United States

It’s A Racquet

fter sitting down with Mark Fairchilds from The Modesto Fitness and Racquet Club, I quickly realized that “Modesto’s Open” for fitness. Mark is a retired professional tennis player and has competed and won some the best tennis matches around the world and made quite a name for himself in the tennis world. Mark has had wins over such great tennis players as Pete Sampras, Carl Chang, Karel Demunk, Patrick Kuhnen and Jean Phillipe Fleurian, whom he beat in what Mark refers to as the hardest match of his life. The match was played in the South of France in front 5,000 French Fans with just a couple of American players in the audience. He was up 5-4 in the 3rd set when the match was called due to darkness. It was a sleepless night for Mark as his mind wandered with thoughts of serving for this match with a lot of money on the line and if he pulled it off, it would be his

Get your game on before it heats up or when the suns going down, night tennis is available at certain locations. 2. Make sure you have the proper tennis shoes or it may result in an injury. 3. Hydration in the key to any sport and drink plenty of water hours prior to your game as well as have some available on the court. 4. Pick your tennis battles wisely; a tennis ball can come at you anywhere from 20 mph to 100 mph. 5. Warm up before a match and stretch before and after. 6. Play for fun! sense of the word. Instead we are asking, “is there something I’ve always wanted to do but never had time for?” We are discovering and rediscovering our true passions. How can you find what you’re passionate about? Here are some suggestions: • Is there something you already love doing? Do you have a hobby, or something you loved doing as a child, but never considered it as a possibility? • Do you spend hours reading about something you love? For myself, when I get passionate about something, I’ll read about it for hours on end. I’ll buy books and magazines. I’ll spend days on the Internet finding out more. • Nothing comes to mind right away? Well, get out a sheet of paper, and start writing down ideas. Anything that comes to mind, write it down. Look around your house, on your computer, on your bookshelf, for inspirations, and just write them down. • Ask Others. See what others have discovered as their passions. Look all over the Internet for ideas • Give it a try & never quit trying. Can’t find your passion at first? Thought you found your passion but you got tired of it? No problem! Start over again and find a new passion. There may be more than one passion in your lifetime, so explore all the possibilities. That is the beauty about retirement, you can try new things. I know two guys that have redefined retirement. Casey Campbell and Doug Houser are brother-in-laws and best friends, and have went into retirement with great drive and passion for what they love. Casey loves motors and loves to go fast. When he retired in 2007 he decided to do Landspeed Racing. Casey, his Campbell Racing Crew and a 1971 Chevy Pickup have been many times to El Mirage Dry Lake Bed Racing and three times to Bonneville Salt Flats Speed Week. This year Casey and his son Tim are doing Circle Track Racing at Madera Speedway. They restored the car and Casey built

the motor for this new adventure into the world of racing. When he is not on the tracks he is building the next race motor. Doug retired this year, and rediscovered his passion for art. He entered three pieces into the Stanislaus County Fair and won Best of Show, a 1st and a 3rd. Wow not bad for just starting to show his beautiful art work. He will soon be opening Douglas ArtaFacts Collection at his ranch in Ceres, where he and his wife Pam will periodically be showing and teaching their art and crafts. These two men have embraced retirement with their passions. A lesson for all of us to enjoy all of the experiences that we can in life, irrespective of age. In fact the retirement years make that more possible, because we have the time. Retirement is the key to the opening of a new door, all one needs to do is to be positive and take the necessary steps to follow your passions. Soon there will be a road trip to a New Mexico Art Show for Doug and driving Route 66 for Casey. Everyone has talent. Some discover it sooner than others. Rotary Club aka MoRo is known for its many community-oriented efforts, among these the popular Senior Stride event that began in 1991. “It’s a Senior-oriented fitness and information outing on September 14th that’s designed for local seniors (55+) who are looking for a fun, interactive and active experience,” explains Monica Ojcius, Co-Chair of the Rotary event. This year’s goal is to have 500 walkers, and it’s become a family affair, with seniors returning every year to be a part of the fun. “We even have father and son and mother and daughter pairs walking together now,” Ojcius says. For a $1.00 registration fee, participants get all kinds of great stuff, including a Sen-

This year’s Presenting Sponsors are TSM Insurance Company and Evergreen Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Hospital. “We also partner with Salvation Army, American Medical Response, Community Hospice, E & J Gallo Winery, Mercer Foods, MOCSE, City of Modesto, McHenry Bowl, MID, Sign Designs, Mid Valley Productions and more,” Ojcius shares. “We’re looking for items to place into the tote bags each senior will receive, raffle prizes, and people who want to participate.” Ojcius is proud of how MoRo’s Senior Stride committee of volunteers puts the entire event together. “Through collaborations within our membership we provide the event coordination, publicity materials, mailings, sell sponsorships, get signage, secure entertainment, food and raffle donations, and security.” Senior Stride is a great opportunity for you to encourage seniors to step up for health and join in a fun event.

School is Fast Approaching! By Abbey Murphy August is here and our time for school

is fast approaching! Whether you’re in 1st grade or 11th grade going back to school is a big deal that is sure to fill you with anxious butterflies and nerves. One good tip: go into the year with a positive attitude that is open to trying new things at your school! The best thing you can do is get involved with your friends and clubs at school to meet lots of new friends. The beginning of the school year is open to many opportunities and changes and there are many clubs on campus that are great to join. Are you really interested in something that doesn’t have a club on campus (maybe horseback riding, oldies music, baking, or recycling) and you want to meet other friends that have the same interests? Start your own club! Go to your administrators at the beginning of the year and get the ball rolling! This is a great way to get to know your school, have fun, and experience a role in leadership that may be entirely new to you. Sports, clubs at school and general involvement in your community are great ways to jump-start your year. Are you in high school and looking for a new way to spice up your spirit attire to support your school?! My personal favorite accessory on rally day is the one and only tutu! It’s easy to make and a huge fashion statement that will have your friends asking where you got

it, when in actuality, it was a homemade DIY project! What You’ll Need: Tulle: One spool each of whatever colors you need. If you are doing one color, do two spools. Elastic: 1/2� or larger. Scissors Ribbon How to Make Your Customized Tutu: 1 First, measure your hips, cut, and tie your elastic to fit your hips. 2. Take out your tulle! For example, since I’m a student at Modesto High I use crimson, black, and a hint of sparkly tulle for some extra fun! (other ideas are silver, blue, and white for Downey; Red, white, blue, and sparkle for Beyer..etc) 3. Cut each strip of tulle at 16�. After tying, this gives the tutu a length of about 6-7� long. 4. Take one of each of your colors of tulle and put them together. Then you will tie a knot around the elastic. Don’t tie it too tight. Make sure you can still move the tulle easily. Then you will tie a knot again in the other direction. Having each tie go a different direction allows for more fluff in the tutu. 5. Then slip this beauty on and make sure to wear at all major events to support your school!
