Mod’s Man A well fitted man Sergios is a renowned name in men’s clothing and they have recently opened their Tailoring house on Aikmans Road, right next door to Mod’s Hair. The Tailoring house will service all of your men’s tailoring needs. John (the tailor) can view garments before they are purchased to help perfect the fit and personalise the pattern to your body shape. “We want our guys to feel like the garment is truly theirs” says Paul Deans of Sergios. “A correctly fitted garment will improve its appearance and more importantly, how the man will feel when he is wearing it”. Post shave handsomeness by Andrew Bell - ManStuff Since the days of cavemen pulling facial hair out with a pair of seashells and Alexander the Great promoting shaving to avoid the ‘perils of beard-grabbing’ in combat, shaving has evolved. In the latter 20th Century the shaving brush, bowl, cream/soap and single-bladed approach were cast aside in preference of machines with spinning blades and multi-bladed throwaways. Fortunately we seem to have learned the error of our ways and men are gradually returning to the traditional wet shave. There are several instruments and ingredients that go into a quality wet shave. Preparation, in the form of a hot rinse (i.e. a shower), scrub and shave cream or soap application with a traditional brush is important to prevent irritation, ingrown hairs and helps to ensure a smooth, comfortable shave. The shave itself is best done using a singular blade with the grain first and then optionally, and depending on how close of a shave is preferred, either with the grain a second time or, for those with more durable and less sensitive skin, against the grain. So treat yourself to quality. After all, this is your face you’re shaving, it deserves the best. Mod’s Hair stock the complete range of manstuff. 12

Work & Play IN Style this summer Working Style Spring-Summer 13/14 is about working within the classical menswear palette, but turning up the volume a notch with colours and patterns. They’ve embraced the brighter hues of summer, with vivid shades of blue adding punch to much of the collection. This is seen from the strictest sartorial wear right through to their soft casual offering. These brighter shades stand out perfectly when paired against the neutral tones prevalent in the rest of their collection. The new season’s suit cut continues to be masculine and reflect Working Style’s history of expert, quality tailoring. The cuts are sharply tailored and exceptionally rakish. The latest cotton shirts are designed to be worn under a jacket or alone, with a neatly tailored pair of chinos or denim. Soft blue’s with highlight checks are prevalent encompassing tan and beige. Purple, Pink and iridescent blues also feature strongly this season. In the casual collection, stand-out pieces include luxurious linen blend blazers and beautifully softened cotton twill jackets; which are easily paired with casual trousers. Cotton knit polo shirts and neatly tailored cargo shorts also feature in the casual collection. Working Style have also introduced a range of handmade limited-edition shoes, all are carefully stamped on the sole with their unique number in the series. They are certainly worth the investment, and have been expertly fashioned in a single piece of leather; the mark of a truly gifted artisan.

Hair For Africa By Julianne Liebeck

First there was hair to Mongolia, now there is hair for Africa. You never know where a yes and a coffee can lead you. For the past six years (which involved a few more coffees and yeses) I have worked with World Vision on three of their microfinance projects - Mongolia, Tanzania and now the Koru Project in Rwanda. The Koru Project plans to incubate entrepreneurship and make social change, with a strong emphasis on boosting literacy and the development of young entrepreneurs. Rwanda’s basic education system is currently facing problems because teachers are poorly paid, and due to inadequate training, lack the skills to teach. Working in conjunction with the Rwandan Government, the literacy programme of Koru looks to improve this situation by assessing and training both teachers and principals, whilst also educating the parents on the importance of engaging their children with their school. The five year programme also includes the promotion of extracurricular reading activities and helps create locally relevant reading materials and book banks. The youth entrepreneurship programme works in tandem with the literacy programme and looks to provide skills and support for youth to start new enterprises, leading to sustainable incomes and job creation. Students gain required skills through community based training centres; they are then offered the opportunity to put their new skills into practice in student run enterprises. 22

These students learn how to develop a business plan, a marketing plan, leverage local culture, address legal issues and business license requirements. Once their formal training is completed, they partner with a business mentor who can support and advise them throughout the process of establishing a better life for their community through their business. I met many people on my travels through Rwanda and I was truly inspired by those I met. I have not seen people more motivated for change. However, it wasn’t just those who I met on my travels that were an inspiration, I have also formed great friendships with those who I travelled with. On the trip to Rwanda, I travelled with New Zealand businessmen Neil Graham, founder of Mainfreight, and Pat Barrow’s, co-founder of Wheedle. I’m excited to be part of the Koru Project and hope that in the years to come that the communities I visited will be lifted out of poverty through the initiatives of the project. It was a wonderful experience and I plan to go back next year to see the progress. It feels so good to be helping people out of poverty and giving them hope. 23

Protein – It’s Anti Aging & Better than Botox By Di McCauley Mint Health

Forget the so called ‘magic products’, ‘overnight miracle creams’ and treatments such as ‘botox’ to reverse the signs of aging. Your diet (everything that passes your lips!) is the ultimate key to warding off the effects of aging. Anti-aging diets are not diets in the sense that its objective is to make you lose weight. An anti-aging diet is actually a lifestyle of dietary habits that will lead you to longevity. Protein is the chief building material of your body. Approximately 18% of your total body weight is pure protein that needs constant repairing, replacing and rebuilding - with more protein, of course! Like the parts of any constantly operated, nonresting machine, your body cells are continually wearing out, needing repairs or replacements. So what are you going to do? Patch up your protein body cells with carbohydrates? Just try patching a rubber tire on your car with flourand-water paste, and see how far you get! Protein should be the featured food in your diet at all times (eaten with every snack and every meal). The ‘constantly in motion’ human machine must have abundant protein every day in order to repair, replace and renew worn-out cells. When you don’t supply enough high-protein foods in your daily diet to make certain that these vitally needed cell repairs and replacements can go on without interruption, you’re inviting old age to take over. Research has proved that a diet poor in protein hastens aging in the human body. Perhaps one of the most obvious examples is in the case of the elderly, weakened by tea-and-toast diets to the point of imminent death from the many health complications and diseases associated with protein deficiency. This is to an extent reversible and the restoration to a more vital life can be restored by gradually converting meals to high-protein foods. In the case of the elderly, weakened bodies will regain some new vigor, and their minds become keen and alert once more. Other visible telltale signs of protein deficiency that result in premature aging are dry and flaky skin, finger pulp atrophy, reduced recoil of skin on the back of hands (pinch the skin between your fingers then let go, the recoil should be instant). 24

We can no longer deny that protein foods are truly nutritional wonders, they preserve youthfulness and maintain life. Protein foods are the main factor in prolonging youth for the 40 + age group, and in maintaining physical vigor and mental alertness in the aged. Many changes start happening to your body cells as the calendar years begin slipping past the 40 mark. Biologists tell us that “aging is a matter of changes in your tissue cells.” Firstly, the tissue cells in older bodies are less elastic, less resilient and take longer to recover from fatigue and injury than the cells in younger bodies. Secondly, the active cells in the older body (especially those in your glands and muscles) gradually grow fewer. Bearing in mind what I’ve already discussed about the great restorative powers of protein on body cells, it is sheer logic that the more years you carry, the more repair material you need each day?

Mint’s a little bit different... From fitness to food Mint & Pure will look after your entire health and wellness requirements. Dedicated personal trainers clinical nutrition team and massage therapists.

If your campaign is to retain the wonderful vital feeling of youth which seems to be slipping away, then you should begin the reversing process with your next meal and that meal should be built around protein. Mint Health & Fitness has a team of nutritionists who provide individualised diet and lifestyle programmes – contact Mint for an anti aging consultation!

Global Roaming By Julianne Liebeck

Everyone is looking for the next hip place even in Paris. The new Parisian nightlife – Paris’s 9th arrondissement Pigalle, is the revival of the city’s once notorious red light district. Yes – hip bars, boutique hotels, clubs, even boutiques and speciality stores in the daytime make their way there too. But it’s what happens after dark that’s got everyone talking – it’s people watching at its best. A little more relaxed than the Marais Fashionistas (but don’t you love them!) Braisenville Restaurant

le Dirty Dick

So where do you start? Cocktails at Le Mansart ensure a relaxed start to the evening. Then head to Le Pantruche gastronomic bistro or the tapa styled Braisenville for dinner. For post dinner drinks you should pop in to either Bar Glass or Le Dirty Dick.

Where to Stay The Belle Epoque-style Banke Hotel is a novelty in itself. It’s also located almost directly behind the legendary Opéra Garnier and is extremely convenient to many cultural institutions.

Banke Hotel

Cool Factor But if you really want to step up the cool factor, then go to Chez Moune and Le Carmen – main stays for the cool crowd. Both bars helped Pigalle to become one of the trendy areas to hang out. Chez Maine has a hip, young and ready-to-party crowd, and Le Carmen has an air of sophistication, both are open from midnight till dawn.
