The Mod’s Summer Collection has an ease of freedom and movement, helped by layers in the cut. So now is the time to embrace your natural curl or wave. Movement is defined by the rich natural chocolate colour, a beautiful contrast this summer.

Tousled texture keeps hair, especially blonde hair, looking modern rather than coiffed and mumsy.

The rock chick gets out of bed, runs her hands through her hair and leaves the house. That’s carefree, and she wears the attitude. Styling products used to recreate this look: sea salt spray, makeoverspray, messing creme and dry touch up KMS.

The colour of summer: it’s neither blonde nor brunette, and no chunky foils that give a stripy look. Goodbye to the harsh dip-dye from last season.

Girls just want to have fun, pink, blue, mauve, all the colours of a Mod girl.

It’s “Bronde” – depth from roots to mid lengths, with highlights blending through to the ends. This is what frenchwomen have been doing for years: Balayage.

This hairstyle looks expensive and flattering. Bespoke and blended with no regrowth line. The plus is very low maintenance and not being at the salon every four to five weeks! 23

The State of Christchurch Architecture With 80% of the central city’s building almost down, what is the state of architecture going up? It’s certainly a unique time in Christchurch’s architectural history. There has been increasing debate on the quality of commercial architecture going up in the city. The central city is a largely empty space, a blank canvas, waiting for architecture to fill the gaps, so the potential for great architecture in Christchurch is immense. Société magazine got the down low from two architecture firms outside of Christchurch to ask their professional opinion on the state of the city’s architecture. 24

Andrew Patterson from Pattersons Associates Limited, is known for his work on the Christchurch Botanic Gardens and recent award winning Annandale Lodge (among others). For Patterson, rules and regulations, the consent process, and ideas such as urban design and city plans can’t make beautiful architecture. Instead, “it’s the talent, consciousness, and creativity contained in projects” that enable great architecture.

(top) Black Estate by RTA Studio. (right) Christchurch Botanic Gardens by Pattersons Associates Limited.

“Some of my favourite places are old industrial sheds, small quaint cribs, and simple utility buildings, so cost should not be an issue”, says Patterson about achieving greatness in architecture. “Proportion is the critical aspect, not cost. The only thing holding architects back from making amazing architecture in Christchurch is a desire to make beauty the priority. Proportion and thought are the critical ingredients for producing cost-effective commercial architecture.” Richard Naish is the executive director at RTA Studio Ltd also in Auckland. He is responsible for the architecture of Black Estate (North Canterbury), K Road’s award winning Iron Bank and AUT’s lecture theatres (Auckland). Naish believes that the buildings designed and built in the early stages of the city’s rebuild will be the catalysts of the future architectural context of Christchurch. To make amazing and unique architecture, architects must think beyond the boundaries of their given site and engage and consider the urban design of Christchurch. Naish says, “architecture is not a luxury for the high end budget and particularly in a post-earthquake environment where there is so much more necessity to get it right on such a wide scale. The caution is not to exchange greatness for haste. Time and thought can overcome budget but haste and low budget can be problematic.” Photographer

what’s happening

On the evening of 16 August, the Christchurch Art Gallery Foundation held a sell-out fundraising event like no other. In celebration of a bold new vision, and a way for people to support its collection, the Gallery brought chef super-couple Fergus and Margot Henderson, and New Zealand artist Bill Culbert over from the UK. The gathering consisted of a 250 strong guest list, and the star-studded night was topped off by singing legend Don McGlashan, Culbert’s favourite musician, who played up a storm for the crowd.

The auction raised over $80,000 and over $100,000 with extra cash and in-kind donations—an incredible result that will go towards a wonderful addition to the Gallery’s collection (top) Don McGlashan. (middle) Eccles cakes by Canterbury Cheesemonger. (top right) The Mod’s Hair team in party mode.

The black-tie dinner curated and cooked by the Hendersons featured a sumptuous menu of Bluff oysters, soft-boiled eggs, duck legs, kohlrabi, radishes and bitter-chocolate ice-cream.

The Foundation is building a $5 million endowment fund and is targeting five great works of art in five years. All of the proceeds from the night went towards purchasing Bill Culbert’s stunning, 15-metre-long Bebop, which featured as part of New Zealand’s presentation at the 2013 Venice Biennale. The auction raised over $80,000 and over $100,000 with extra cash and in-kind donations— an incredible result that will go towards a wonderful addition to the Gallery’s collection. Bebop will soar over the foyer’s marble staircase when the Gallery reopens. Now the Christchurch Art Gallery is asking you to help. If you share their obsession with art, with artists and the power of art—and if you believe that art makes a difference—the Christchurch Art Gallery is offering three special ways for you to partner with them to show much good art really matters in Christchurch. Unearthed Christy Martin (30) is a native from California and Giulio Sturla (34) from Chile. Together they moved to New Zealand in 2009, and in 2012 they founded Roots Restaurant in Lyttelton. Their unique and forward-thinking restaurant has gained much national attention for their foraging ethos.

What is your experience? I have been cooking for over 15 years and have lived/worked in New Zealand, Mexico, Chile, Ecuador, USA and Spain. I have trained in all kinds of kitchens from eco-lodges to cruise ships, small restaurants to one of the best in the world. What is the Roots ethos? Interconnection with our environment, respect for our product and to create a business based on trust with the people around us.

Why forage? There are many reasons to forage. Foraging takes you into the nature that surrounds. Every season Mother Nature provides different edibles. It is fun, refreshing and rewarding to forage your food. It is amazing once you start you see just how much food there is around. Foraging is a daily activity, so the freshness and flavours are amazing. What are the benefits of foraging? We forage because we like to connect with nature, we like to feel the energy of our environment through the seasons. The greatest benefit is that we learn something new all the time. What is Banks Peninsula like for foraging? Abundant. Once you start you find edibles in the different seasons and spots where certain plants thrive at different times. rootsrestaurant.co.nz Photographer Meredith Dyer

What are some of the most exciting things you have foraged? The most exciting thing for us to find was samphire or beach asparagus because we had been looking for it in New Zealand for four years. During autumn mushrooms are the specialty to look for under the trees. What is your advice to those wanting to start foraging? First, read about it, inform and educate yourself, never go to the wild without knowledge. Start with one or two plants that you know and the foraging journey will take your interests further. There are many good native edibles books that can help you distinguish plants as you become a more knowledgeable forager. Do you have others forage for you and then drop off to you to cook? People are always coming into the restaurant and presenting home grown produce. However, really the only foraged ingredients that people have brought into the restaurant have been mushrooms. 35

Ask the Experts Beauty Nicola Quinn from Nicola Quinn Beauty & Day Spa talked to SociĂŠtĂŠ about her inspiration from her recent overseas trips, and how she is using that inspiration in her business here in Christchurch.

36

Hi Nicola — tell us about your recent visit to the In-Cosmetics exhibition in Hamburg earlier this year

their intriguing world, the sourcing of next generation skin care actives as presented at the annual worldwide exhibition.

It was a game changer, an opportunity to be at the pinnacle of the professional beauty industry and I was certainly very fortunate for the invitation. The makers of O Cosmedics, a highly active cosmedical skin care range, allowed me into

What did you get up to at the exhibition? To be fair, there wasn’t actually a lot to see. No beautiful bottles of glistering creams, fancy packaging or big marketing hyped campaigns. Instead there were

many doctors, R&D developers and scientists talking about their skincare actives they have discovered, tested and poured many years into. Can you tell us more about these skincare actives?! As an example, skin care actives now are so targeted in the specific cell function they are working on, that that they are directed like GPS to

reach the specific goal and the cell or protein they are to reach. No more wishy washy hope in a jar. Now too are actives which work in a similar way to having filler injected, plumping your skin without the need for needles. What other amazing skincare inventions did you discover? O Cosmedics introduced DNA skin testing, an extremely unique and exclusive 37

way of testing your genetics to understand how your skin will likely age, what your weaknesses and strengths are and then prescribing for you, your very own unique skincare prescription, spa treatment programme, and internal supplements. Forget the crystal ball, and any guess work, this new kind of skin analysis is the future of skincare, right here, right now. There is cream you can apply not only to reduce fat, but to increase muscle firmness. This has been proven to be able to do so to the same degree as having exercised at the gym. Amazing, but then combine that with actually going to the gym, and suddenly your workout is super effective. This is only

a small part of what I saw and learned. But even more exciting for me, was seeing what O Cosmedics are utilising and developing from all of this science in order to bring these products to the customer. What did you take away from your visit to the exhibition? More than anything it confirmed that there was nothing in skin care there that Nicola Quinn Beauty & Day Spa doesn’t already have. In fact, we all felt

that the ranges we work with are well ahead of the field. Having said that, finding Faby, a new nail polish and LED cured gel system, was an absolute highlight and one which we have been fortunate enough to secure for New Zealand. The range is only 12 months old and we’ve just received it. So watch this space for exciting, new and creative ways to have high fashion nails like never before.

Why is diet and food so important to you?

Ask the Experts Nutrition Rita Connolly has recently been the restaurant manager at Black Estate, one of the leading wineries in Waipara, North Canterbury, and now moonlights with gardening North Canterbury. She is passionate about food and health. Société sat down to talk food, allergies and how your diet can instantly transform you health and wellbeing.

44

Hi Rita, tell us about yourself! I’m Rita, married to Jared Connolly, together 11 years. We’ve got two great girls, Harper Grace (10) Keela India (6). We had been living in Central Otago and have recently re-located to Christchurch. Why did you move to Christchurch? In Otago we worked on a biodynamic vineyard and farm. There we grew a lot of our own food including meat and honey. Our move to Christchurch was all about being close to grandparents, having weekends and food! We are enjoying knowing that much of the food we now eat is grown here in Canterbury.

Having worked in the hospitality industry, it is incredible how many people I come across who have dietary requirements mostly related to allergies and health choices. Everyone has a food journey and for my family, our food choices started when we had children. My husband and I are committed foodies and buy food that we believe nourishes our bodies, and that usually means organic, biodynamic, local, seasonal. The biggest lesson so far is that of digestive health. How did you discover that food could help improve digestive health? Our youngest daughter has always had digestive issues. Her moods, immune system and sleep were all over the show. After much reading, internet browsing and talking with friends, doctors, natural practitioners and strangers (some

of the best advice can come from the random conversations you have!) it has lead our whole family down the path of low sugar, dairy and gluten and most importantly the addition of probiotics in the form of foods and supplements. I say ‘low’ and not ‘free’ because we have found being flexible works for us,. We call our family flex-etarians. What do you eat everyday that you would recommend to others? We include some kind of fermented food in our daily diet. For our youngest, she can tolerate yogurt, and we all drink Water Kefir an amazing drink full of beneficial bacteria that tastes similar to home made lemonade. We cut back on all grains, including the gluten free ones. For a while we missed the rice and the breads, but by replacing these with an extra serving of vegetables the cravings have gone.

Who’s Changing the World? Soul Capital is a new non-profit venture run by teenage prodigy Jamie Newth. Soul Capital is an impact investment organisation, which means they invest and support innovative social enterprises, social businesses, and other entities which deliver social (or environmental) impact, as well as financial returns. So if you’re a philanthropist, investor, or corporate looking for a game changing way to make a difference in New Zealand, or in developing nations overseas, you need to meet Jamie.

Hi Jamie! What is your job? I’m one of the co-founders and the Chief Executive of Soul Capital. What do you do in your spare time? In my spare time I advise businesses and NGOs on innovation, strategy, and growth. And I’m finishing up a PhD in social entrepreneurship. How can Soul Capital change the world just a little? We’re aiming for more than just a little! Social enterprises and social businesses are powerful vehicles for delivering positive social change, but because they are trying to ‘do good’ (like fix a societal or environmental 46

“Really it’s about finding innovative ways to solve wicked problems– the sorts of problems that endure despite the best attempts of the market, government, and non-profits” problem) as well as turn a profit, they can’t always get capital from the usual sources. By providing the investment capital to these enterprises and entrepreneurs, we’re enabling them to scale-up their impact dramatically – so that’s changing the world through catalysing entrepreneurship.

The other way we’ll change the world is through leadership. We’re out to prove that you can get a financial return on investment AND have a positive social impact.

With everyone talking ‘social enterprise’ and other buzz words these days – how would you define these terms in your own words: Social Enterprise: These sit in the middle of a continuum between traditional businesses and traditional charities. It’s a business whose primary purpose for existing is to alleviate a social or environmental issue. There are lots of models but examples include using the profits to support a cause, specifically employing people who otherwise wouldn’t be employed, or serving a community group that would otherwise be excluded from essential social services.

Social Entrepreneurship: It’s entrepreneurship first and foremost, but with a social purpose. It’s a process of pursing positive social change using innovation and a market orientation. Really it’s about finding innovative ways to solve wicked problems—the sorts of problems that endure despite the best attempts of the market, government, and non-profits. Name a leader in social enterprise whom you respect a great deal in the world and why? One rockstar social entrepreneur is Muhammed Yunus (of Grameen) for leading the microfinance movement and proving that with an innovative model, you can provide unsecured loans to the poor and that it will help them lift themselves out of poverty. His innovation has led to thousands of microfinance organisations being created and disproven some pretty backward attitudes that people had about people living in poverty. Thanks Jamie! So how can you be contacted? By visiting soulcapital.org
