Local Visionaries
Three years on from the devastating earthquakes, our city continues to go through monumental change. We talked to local visionaries who are creating the places where we will work, eat and play.
Antony Gough // Property Developer With a degree in Nuclear Physics you might expect Antony Gough to be working in a nuclear power plant. Instead he is the man behind The Terrace, one of Christchurch’s biggest developments set to be the precinct powerhouse of the central city.
20
What has been your design inspiration for The Terrace?
What has been the most interesting part of the rebuild?
What has been your motivation?
To optimize the site rather than maximise the site. The Terrace is designed to be the place Christchurch people will want to meet up at and socialize within. We see it as the living room to the city. It will be a true mixed use development combining hospitality, offices, retail, hotel, apartments and car parking.
Creating a new, vibrant heart for the CBD. We talk about discovery at every turn with The Terrace. It is not to be bland and look like a mall but bright, exciting, different and outward looking. We have the broad statement that if you see it in a mall then you will be unlikely to see it in The Terrace.
The belief in a vibrant CBD. No one really wants a donut city where it all happens on the outskirts and the centre is dead. Melbourne Lane ways has had a major influence on our lane way thoughts. Antony hopes the first stage of The Terrace will open by Christmas 2014 with the project likely to be completed over five years.

Neil Cox // Isaac Theatre Royal With the Isaac Theatre Royal due to open in October, we talk to chief executive Neil Cox about the rebuild of the Christchurch icon. Have you been able to retain any of the theatre’s historic features? We wanted to retain as much heritage as we possibly could. The original 1908 facade, the painted ceiling dome and the late 1920’s marble staircase being the largest items, but many more smaller pieces have been saved as well. The dome will be significantly more spectacular because it’s has all been cleaned. It’s going to sparkle and glow and with the nature of it being canvas, we’re getting to the point now, having had the restorers involved, where we think it’s the biggest individual painting in Australasia on canvas - we are also checking further afield. So this now opens up something completely new because it becomes interesting for museums and cultural organizations - and that’s where it starts to become exciting. We are sort of evolving from
a theatre, mostly eclipsed by the Town Hall and various other places; to something that’s going to be a bit of a showpiece. Have you felt supported? Yes, overall from the public perception, from the media perception, from international artists, from everyone we have. We have felt enormously supported. Sir Ian McKellen and Richard O’Brien are amazing ambassadors. They give us such exposure and such a network of support from other angles. It’s an injection of passion and it gives you that faith that there are people out there who want to help just for one theatre and that’s been enormous. What will people recognize as the biggest changes to the theatre? Well once we demolished from the façade to the stage front,
everything inside that is a new build and that has been a massive change. So people will walk through the façade and you’ll instantly notice a difference with the foyer spaces and the elevators which go to all three floors. There is a brand new foyer space for the top level gallery which previously did not have a foyer at all. The auditorium, which is now 100% of code, will feel a lot brighter. But the seating layout has changed so people will notice a difference there. We have also extended the Dress Circle foyer which can be closed off completely to form a new multi-function & community performance space for approximately 70-120 people. So we will have everything that we used to have and a lot more that we always wanted to have.

Sam Crofskey // C1 Espresso In his 11th year of owning C1 Espresso, Sam Crofskey talks about sticking it out in Christchurch and the design inspiration that went into their new premises. What was your design inspiration for the new premises? We wanted to take the essence of our old place and translate it into a new building. It is such a different space but I have no doubt that people understand that this is still C1. We wanted this place to feel familiar even though it’s brand new. The chairs are from church halls, teacher’s staff rooms and there are hospital chairs and lab stools. Everything has been recycled from somewhere or locally made. We wanted it to feel familiar and to show that the building was strong and safe. Some people still like being by a door so we put two doorways in so people could feel safe. But we also wanted a sense of fun which the old C1 had. Like the sliding bookcase doorway, the tubes that deliver food, the dentist and sewing machine
water fountain and the pinball machines. Then there is the real environmental focus so it’s all energy efficient. The café heats itself out of our kitchen and it all comes out through the floor, we grow our own vegetables out the front, we have a rooftop garden, vineyard and beehives. We have blown it out of the park so no one can follow – they can - but we are competing globally.
Everything has been recycled from somewhere or locally made. Why did you choose to reopen in Christchurch? People were trying to lure us overseas and the offers were varied and attractive and we
were very tempted to pack up and leave. We could have gone to New York, found a corner and measured footfall and demographics and had all those type of things before we opened our business with certainty. Whereas I guess the certainty about Christchurch was that ‘I can’t believe that the city won’t have a centre.’ Christchurch used to be a place where the glass was either half full or half empty depending on how you looked at it. The only positive thing for us about the earthquake is that we all admit that the glass is empty and we have to do something, we have to fill that glass with stuff. That’s how I see it, I think it’s a really great thing to know that we are at the bottom and we have to come back. The world’s watching and we wanted to deliver something that was truly world class. The reason we came back was because we saw an opportunity where the rules were rewritten and we could be acknowledged as being the greatest. We decided we wanted to be the best and it’s an exciting place to do business.

Jo Blair // Events & Marketing Jo Blair is the founder of Brown Bread, a company that helps people realise their big ideas. Jo has been part of numerous iconic projects & below she explains her motivation to work with big visions and ideas that positively impact Christchurch. What has been the most exciting event you have been part of in Christchurch? Too hard to answer! I learnt the most and laughed the most when directing the SCIRT World Buskers Festival with the amazing Jodi Wright; I am passionate about what Ellerslie International Flower Show could do – but would love to see it gain some imagination again; the scientists, artists, and Antarctic world leaders that I met at NZ IceFest (it’s on for the second time this year) inspired me and made me think big. I think the Christchurch Art Gallery is one of the most on-to-it organisations I have had the pleasure of working with - and Back the Bull was an awesomely audacious project, but it is sometimes the smaller events I love the most, like Black Estate’s Rolling Riesling Day last year at C1
Espresso Building or Rangi Ruru’s 125th celebrations that may culminate in a massive ‘house party’ at the end of this year. What motivated you to bring the bull to Christchurch? The people of Christchurch asked for it to come to Christchurch for good. Christchurch Art Gallery ‘s Director and Trust led the charge, and felt it was something they could do to help the city in the recovery. I’m inspired by impossible tasks and large visions – so jumped on board to help bring in the money. What has been the most exciting part of your involvement in the ‘All Right?’ campaign? Working with the Mental Health Foundation and Christchurch District Health Board on this campaign is a huge privilege.
PHOTO // Chapman’s Homer, Courtesy of Michael Parekowhai and Michael Lett.
They take so much care and responsibility to ensure the community owns this campaign and this is reflected in the unprecedented awareness levels of the All Right? message. I get to deliver the fun, outrageous bursts of All Right which help activate the campaign, but the team who created the brand (Make Collective and McCarthy) are the real geniuses. Brown Bread just get to make people’s day and share the love. Jo is involved in several upcoming projects including ‘The Woods from the Trees’ which launches in March. Auckland artist Regan Gentry will build a sculpture of three Rimu trees made out of wood from demolished houses. The sculpture will take around 8 weeks to construct and should be completed by May/ June.
Sue McCormack // Lawyer & Pro-Chancellor More than just a lawyer, Sue partners with her clients to help them realise their visions. She does all this alongside her role as Pro-Chancellor at The University of Canterbury
What do you regard as Christchurch’s greatest successes in the past three years, and how has that related to your involvement with the Christchurch rebuild? The people of Christchurch have been amazing. For all of us who live here we know how hard it has been. The people have kept going and kept their belief in this city alive. I have been involved with many clients
who have had to start again either by rebuilding a business or rebuilding a building. Although it is always difficult to name a few I think that Lisa and Yommi from Saggio Di Vino have been a show case for personal perseverance. It is not easy starting again when you are not 40! Also of course Antony Gough and his rebuild of The Terrace. It takes a strong head and a lot of guts for an individual to attempt such a huge redevelopment of the CBD. What would you like Christchurch to be in 10 years’ time? Not only a fun and vibrant city, but also a city that is globally connected, and has a sense of community where both young and old feel that this city has something for them, that it belongs to them and that they want to live and play here. How do you help your clients realise their vision for Christchurch? The most important roll I have had in the last few years is not only providing legal support for my clients but assisting them in bringing their dreams to fruition. We encourage our students at the university to be
Local Visionaries
risk takers and now is the time to see this risk-taking in action. The Christchurch rebuild is both an opportunity and a challenge and there are some that are prepared to put their faith and their money in this city. What role is the university playing in the rebuild? The University of Canterbury (UC) was hit hard by the earthquakes both in building damage and a reduction in roll numbers. Looking forward and with a capital contribution by the government of $260m to support a new flagship Regional Science and Innovation Centre and to refurbish the College of Engineering it will not only regain its student numbers and rankings but with its investment objectives it will also bring benefits to the wider community. UC will provide a strong education system for the Canterbury region, equipping students for life and work and it will also strengthen Christchurch as a safe, vibrant education destination. Living here is sometimes not easy but with new restaurants and bars opening daily and the start of a new exciting rebuild what more could one ask for, bring on the food, wine and fun, we all need it!
Tony Astle // Restaurateur The Hospitality King known for creating restaurants and bars which have the perfect balance of atmosphere and cuisine. Where do you find design inspiration? Travelling, hours and hours of research online - this is what I love about what I do - and I guess I create the type of venue I would enjoy going to. I try and find a balance between moving Christchurch forward without freaking the customer out.
What has been your motivation? I get a real buzz creating new venues for the Christchurch public to enjoy, it’s why I do what I do. Post-earthquake there has been a fairly blank canvas to work with, which has been exciting for people like me. I still see a lot of conservative interiors; hopefully this improves in the future. Post earthquake Astle has opened King of Snake and Mexicano’s on Victoria St. He is in the process of building a new bar and is also planning a new restaurant/bar due to open in June. 25

It’s all in the family. Lilly Cooper and her children, George and Caroline, are taking on Christchurch one step at a time. Having reinvented shopping in Sydenham with The Colombo, the family now look to take on the new challenge of building and running a five-star boutique hotel. How closely do you work together and what are your roles? We all have our roles within the business; Lilly makes sure the engines running! Caroline oversees The Colombo, the development, new tenancies, the management & the marketing. George looks after the newest venture Hotel Montreal alongside his partner Lucy. What has been your greatest success? Lilly: The Colombo has been our greatest success, creating a place for people to go & enjoy
after the earthquake has been the best thing we could ever do for Christchurch. The Colombo has transformed Sydenham, what was the biggest obstacle? Caroline: The transformation period from Sydenham Central to The Colombo & changing the perception of the place. We were amazed with how quickly it happened though, but in saying that it has taken a lot of hard work, quick decisions and long hours. We get people traveling from all over the South Island to spend a day at The Colombo now, it’s fantastic to hear and all worth it when you hear the great feedback. When we see how happy it makes people to come and enjoy their time with family & friends at The Colombo it drives us to want to create more great spaces here and expand The Colombo family. Which brings us to stage two of The Colombo this year, more food, more retail and more great places to shop.
What motivated you to embark on Hotel Montreal? Lilly: It was a great opportunity using an existing building and refurbishing it. By refurbishing it we have the opportunity to get the building up and running much earlier than any other new build could. The other bid for the hotel was a backpackers so we thought the area deserved it, the gateway to the park, the fantastic location all deserved a five-star international hotel. With the boutique hotel planning to open in July it will boast 25 rooms, a 3 bedroom penthouse, gym, health spa and a Polo Bar with Argentinian style tapas. Another Coopers & Co. delicatessen and a new restaurant will also be on site.

Business is good // Julianne Liebeck
In a world of extremes, there is unnecessary poverty and incomparable wealth. This was confirmed at the World Economic Forum in Davos earlier this year, where it was revealed that the 85 richest people in the world have as much wealth as the 3.5 billion poorest. The world is starting to embrace social impact through business. Many businesses and people aren’t just about ‘the profit’. Yes we need profit, to repay debt used to start our businesses and to reserve cash for a rainy day. But we can also direct some of our profits to people who need very little to thrive all over the world. Social impact, social enterprise, social impact investing, community interested company and B corporations – these are not just buzz words – this is the new frontier.
Social impact, social enterprise, social impact investing, community interested company and B corporations are not just buzz words – this is the new frontier.
One of the most famous examples of social enterprise is Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Restaurant. The restaurant offers young, unemployed people the experience of learning to work in the restaurant business alongside a team of 25 professional chefs and mentors. More and more people are disillusioned with classic capitalism and social enterprise is growing in leaps and bounds. Nonprofit groups welcome the development of social enterprise for it is part of their tool kit - it can work alongside mircrofinancing with the likes of VisionFund. It’s sustainable and empowers people to help themselves out of a problem by learning skills and developing businesses. How can that not be good!? Mod’s Hair have been investing in microfinance with VisionFund for the last seven years in Mongolia, Tanzania and Cambodia.

Ask the Experts // Colour Brushing
The colour brushing technique is taking the celebrity world by storm. Colour brushing can be as natural or as strong as you like and all of the A-Listers have a variation of this technique. Also known as balayage it is Mod’s Hair’s signature technique. Here are some suggestions by the colourists at Mod’s Hair Merivale.
BLONDE AMBITION “Kim Kardashian’s new colour suits her more than anything else I’ve seen,” says Charlie. “It works harder to frame the features. It’s very glamorous.” This colour technique best shows off a layered cut, and an experienced colourist will create a bespoke base and blonde tones to best suit your skin tone.
ROSY OUTLOOK Rose gold has made a huge comeback in fashion, and now it’s big for hair too. “Rachel McAdams has taken her soft red, and kicked it up a notch by adding golden colour throughout. Her colourist likely used the balayage technique to create the natural, sweeping highlights.” Says Charlie. This look works well for anyone with a light-medium complexion, and really makes blue and green eyes pop.
30
TAKE ROOT Katherine’s favourite is Cara Delevingne’s blonde locks. “Her hair is extremely natural looking with the perfect amount of dark exposed root, giving her that effortlessly flawless look. It’s totally natural yet somehow polished.” Katherine suggests balayage with cool tones to achieve Cara’s look.
ICED LATTE Blondes don’t get to have all the fun when it comes to making colour look cooler. “Warm brunettes with caramel or golden dimensional highlights are moving towards cool chestnuts with icy brown-toned highlights,” says Lindsay. “Right now, I’m loving Mila Kunis’ hair—she’s another great example of an icytoned brunette.” The best news is that it suits most skin tones.
The Technique With balayage (colour brushing) the foils take a back seat with the colour being brushed on. In the hands of a skilled balayage artist, colour is painted onto the hair to create natural contrasts in colour. 31

An Intelligent Diet // Di McCauley - Clinical Nutritionist
It has been proven that by eating the right food you can boost your IQ, improve your mood, be more emotionally stable, sharpen your memory and keep your mind young! Brain Foods For brain cells to communicate effectively with each other they need to create neural pathways which require chemicals called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are made from amino acids found in protein foods. Vitamins and minerals are needed to convert ordinary amino acids into these powerful neurotransmitters. The three key neurotransmitters are: Acetylcholine (Ach) This neurotransmitter excites other neurons and may be responsible for memory. It’s involved with voluntary movement of muscles, behavioural inhibition, drinking & memory. People with Alzheimer’s may have less Ach or Ach that is blocked. Ach rich foods include egg yolks, peanuts, wheat germ, liver, meat, fish, milk, cheese and vegetables. Serotonin Serotonin is part of the brain’s reward system producing feelings of pleasure. However it also inhibits and is involved in arousal, sleep, mood, appetite and sensitivity. Carbohydrate based foods are rich in serotonin and include pasta, starchy vegetables, potatoes, cereals & breads. Dopamine Dopamine generally excites and is involved in movement, attention and learning but is also inhibitory. It is involved with voluntary movement and emotional arousal. Protein is rich in dopamine and can be found in meats, milk products, fish, beans, nuts, soy product. People with Parkinson’s disease may have less or damaged dopamine. Brain Foods // Carbohydrate Carbohydrates enhance the absorption of tryptophan, which is converted into serotonin in the brain. Within about 30 minutes of eating a carbohydrate meal, you will feel more calm and relaxed with the effects lasting several hours. Grains, fruits and vegetables are key sources of carbohydrates. 36
Brain Foods // Protein Proteins are used to make neurotransmitters and are essential to improve mental performance. Protein provides the building blocks for most of the body’s tissues, nerves and internal organs. Protein is found in meat, fish, milk, eggs, cheese. Brain Foods // Fat Omega 3 fatty acids are essential to the optimum performance of your brain. Lack of omega-3 fats in your diet can lead to depression, poor memory, low IQ, learning disabilities and dyslexia. To ensure that your diet is rich in omega-3 fats, ensure that you eat plenty of oily fish like salmon, sardines, trout, tuna, herring, mackerel & anchovies. Brain Foods // Vitamins & Minerals Vitamins & minerals are essential for the growth and functioning of the brain. The ‘B’ Complex vitamins are particularly important for the brain and play a vital role in producing energy. Vitamins A, C & E are powerful antioxidants and promote and preserve memory in the elderly. Minerals are also critical to mental functioning and performance. Iron, Magnesium and manganese are needed for brain energy. Sodium, potassium & calcium are important in the thinking process and they facilitate the transmission of messages. Your Brain Needs Water Water makes up 83% of the blood and acts as a transport system, delivering nutrients to the brain & eliminating toxins. Studies have shown that most people are permanently affected by partial dehydration. This means that their brain is working considerably below its capacity and potential. Therefore you should drink approximately two litres of water daily. O2 – Breathe! After a big meal, most of your body’s oxygen is being used by your stomach & digestive system as it digests the food you have eaten. This means that your brain is being denied much of the oxygen it needs to function effectively and stay mentally alert. This is why you tend to feel sleepy after a big meal! Therefore, you should try to eat little & often as well as eating your main meal either at lunchtime or before 8pm. Di McCauley is the clinical nutritionist at Mint Health & Fitness 37
Beauty Basics Q&A When your skin is looking tired and is showing signs of fine lines and wrinkles – all that is often needed is the beauty basics. We ask Belle Epoque how to keep your skin looking youthful.
The skin around my eyes is starting to sag, is there a quick fix? Often woman feel their brows are drooping or their lids are starting to look hooded as they age. A simple brow shape and tint can often change the whole face simply by framing the face and giving the eye area a more open and youthful look. This is the simplest and most effective treatment we offer. I am in my early 40’s and have started developing crow’s feet and frown lines – what are my options? You could start with derma rolling which is the ultimate collagen induction therapy. Derma rolling is commonly used in reducing the appearance of fine wrinkling and aged skin. The end result sees collagen bought to the surface of the skin, leaving your skin feeling rejuvenated. Another option you could consider is Botox which is also commonly used for the treatment of frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet. I have some scarring that I would like removed – what treatments should I consider? Diamond Head Microdermabrasion is a good option and is considered a safe, painless therapy that can deliver instant results. It works by exfoliating the epidermis of the skin to treat various skin imperfections. Your skin will appear fresh, clean and smooth to the touch after just one treatment. This treatment, combined with a Vitamin C infusion and peel to help boost skin renewal, will offer optimum results. Derma rolling could once again be considered because it also helps reduce the appearance of scarring and stretch marks. My skin is starting to sag - is there a specific treatment that will fix this or will I require a combination of treatments? Quite often you will require treatments in conjunction with your home skin care routine. Beneficial treatments include Ultrasonic which can be used on the face and body. Ultrasonic stimulates the skin and firms underlying muscles resulting in a youthful, firm and plump appearance. Juvederm could also be considered - the injectable gel is commonly used to restore volume to the face. At Belle Epoque it is administered only by our inhouse doctor, you can speak with Dr Alison Ross (MBChB, FRACP) about the benefits and risks of the procedure.
38
Juvederm Voluma injectable gel is a Prescription Medicine containing 20 mg/ ml cross linked hyaluronic acid. It is used to restore volume of the face. Stay – Galle Face Hotel No stay is complete without staying at this historic hotel built in 1846. It reflects an era of grandeur visited by royalty, celebrities and the occasional Pope. The hotel is under restoration until approximately November 2014.
Eat – The Gallery Café This beautiful location used to be the working studio of local and great architect Geoffrey Baw. You’ll fall in love with the simplicity and rustic chic. It has superb food and service – and there is a shop for local goodies.
The Galle Fort It’s a must do and it left me feeling like I had come home. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site which has a colourful history. You could stay at the Galle Fort hotel or the Amangalla resort where the high tea lunch is an experience in itself. 40
