Figure 2 Rearrangement of the DGNB definition The building sector is responsible for up to 40% of all energy consumption. This makes the building sector the biggest sinner in the fight against global warming. We need to change our ways of building, otherwise, the greenhouse gases will more than double in the next 20 years (UNEP SBCI, 2009). The most used definition of sustainability is from the Brundtland report:

“Sustainable development seeks to meet the needs and aspirations of the present without compromising the ability to meet those of the future” (United Nations, 1987).

This meaning our main approach to sustainability should target the present and future aspect of the design. During the Rio-conference in 1992 sustainability was divided into three topics: economic, environmental and social sustainability (Green Building Council Denmark, 2017).

In this project, the original DGNB definition will be rearranged where our focus will be on the technique, environment and social criteria, whereas the economy criteria will be lightly touched as a LCC analysis. The LCC will be evaluated together with the environment criteria. We chose to leave out the ‘Process’ criteria of its irrelevance to this project. Only the Pro 1.2: The Integrated Design process is relevant and that is already our overall methodology approach. The sub criteria we found most important are mentioned in appendix 01. By having this approach, we will have a sustainable and extensive method of evaluating our design criteria.
