Figure 28 Affordances within architectural design The architecture of the health centre should have a fundamental basis within the detail and be inspired by the detailing of different scales. Affordances and gestures, e.g. seatings, are detailed architecture that will help push the whole concept in a more profound direction. To stimulate the patient, like in Paimio Sanatorium, curve-linear shapes and colours should be implemented. The architecture should reflect upon the tactility and the embodied experience within a certain material. Awareness of the detail and material may bring physically and psychologically comfort for the patient. A strong relation between the body, the activity and the architecture creates coherence that will promote positivity among patients and staff.

Optimization of the plans is also important, as well as tailoring the functions and their hierarchy in order to get the best possible outcome for both patients and staff.

Integration of the natural setting of Egholm is a very important agenda because of the evidence-based research that concludes that light, wood and views towards landscapes have restorative effects on the human being. The outdoor characteristics bring quality to the indoor and therefore should the interior be inspired by the routes and nature of Egholm. This should be shown in the way the different facilities of the building are oriented towards the outdoors.

By addressing these stimulating details, improvement of the guest's health and well-being should happen.

02 SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY

This chapter introduces to the approach to social sustainability covering both physical and psychological aspects of comfort aiming for a holistic approach to the interior detailing and spatial design. The user needs are analysed through the outline of user persona’s bringing the many differentiated functionality needs into consideration.

State-of-the-art principles of spatial planning and interior design and detailing that evokes destress investigates design strategies to unfold the persona’s spatial needs, and bring into play case studies on health design.
