Figure 71 ZEB Strategies Solhuset functions as a daycare centre in Hørsholm, Denmark. Throughout the design process of the building, there was a large focus on the environment, climate, and energy. The purpose of the design was to set new standards for future sustainable design. The main driver for the design was the user, the orientation to ensure good daylight qualities and a healthy indoor climate (Velux.dk, unknown).

Built on the principles of an Active House, this building should produce more energy than it consumes, and create a healthy environment for its users, with no negative environmental impact (Velux.dk, unknown). The user perspective is well shown in the layout of the building, which is organized as a small village with lanes, streets and small niches, clearly showing the children as a focus. Windows in the building are strategically placed to ensure a good daylight factor. The vertical windows together with a high ceiling height in all rooms and a sloped roof, ensure an average daylight factor of 7%. Furthermore, contributes the varying ceiling heights to good air circulation. Solar cells and solar collectors are placed on the southern surface of the roof. The solar cells produce enough energy to ensure a self-sufficient energy bank for the building, as well as a surplus to the net (Velux.dk, unknown).

In the health centre, a good daylight factor should be ensured. Furthermore, should skylight windows be implemented to both create good daylight, but also to provide different atmospheric scenarios in the building. On the southern surface of the roof solar cells should be integrated and the indoor climate should be ensured by passive means such as eaves, shading and window positioning.
