THOUGHT This is a project that ticks a lot of boxes with regard to small buildings.

MICRO PORTABLE REDUCES ENERGY SMALL FOOTPRINT HOUSING SOLUTIONS AFFORDABLE BUILDABLE LIVABLE

“The expandable” idea is not new, it has been done before, many times, but this approach is challenging in term of its scale. It designed to be independent, capable to accommodate a couple, easy to build, light in terms of weight, adopting a new construction technology, light on environment and presents a whole new lifestyle. The idea has great potential, both in term of reducing footprint of single dwellings and for influencing an awareness of not just of living beyond our means, but beyond our needs.

‘I wanted to make something that between architecture and a product you need, something people might buy on impulse, it’s a personal approach to have a kick start to be entrepreneur as I wanted’

SLEEPING SPACE A smart simple solution has been adapted to provide space during day time, by installing a wall mounted folding bed on the expanding part of “The Expandable” which allows to apply double bed can be fold manually and use its back as a laptop desk. The smart tick here is the sleeping space is when its on the floor doesn't effect the living space which, that space can be multi functional and accommodate a couple at the time.

‘I believe in that bed design deliver the need and more’

EATING SPACE It’s a need of having eating space, to have your daily fuel in comfortable place, but not extremely important to place the dining table in a position to be fixed. The need of dining table is required 2-3 times for 15-30 minuets a day, so it’s folding table fitted into a wall mounted cupboard with some hidden shelves to keep all the table need in, and hide everything when not in use. It’s also can be placed without effecting the sleeping space and it can be walked around smoothly.

Table and chairs been folded, spacious living area can be use. ‘It might be simple idea, but worth to be applied’

STORAGE Was a kind of difficult part to achieve, because I don’t want to extend the footprint more than what I’ve done. The idea a log time of design and thought to be done. The need of have storage in “THE EXPANDABLE” went so far to end up with built a wall storage witch can fit everything inside. Kitchen has been designed within IKEA standard and fitted appliances, because IKEA has indulgent solutions for small spaces and they use recycled materials and cardboards, light, simple allows ease of build by standard and customized use as need. A 3 meter wall covered by storage to contain clothes, eating ironing table, LCD screen, bookshelves and much more. ‘To support the coating system, cover walls with storage, save more spaces’

WASHING/SHOWER New folding technology to minimize space

The wet glass cube has been designed to reach need, minimized to the limit and tacking ventilation in case , and included a new technology of folding toilet, small sink, bath products case with mirror door and shower. The floor coated by net rubber to keep water running into drain smooth with unwet floor.

Placed between kitchen and sitting area

Covered by mirror to have privacy and support space feeling.

It’s tiny, but performs well!

EASE OF BUILD The first thought comes to mind of having ease of built is LEGO, which simple, easy, adopt new technology. “THE EXPANDABLE” relays on a standard diminution (units) of material obtainable on the market and has been manufactured such 40,60,80,100CM, standard diminution, no cut on site, just hold, push, pull, install to be ready! IKEA likely.

The wall formed to be panels has the same technique of joining cladding with no needs of bolts or joining material The panels fraction, toughness keeps it in position.

The expanding part has a complex design and mechanism depending on electricity and hydraulic system, but late David Morton presented a model of simplicity which a basic ideas can do more than it costs. The design changed to be simple, basic and efficient. The expanding barrier has the answer if it’s fitted on track with chine to support smooth, easy moving. The system been used a for long the years to split areas, but here been adapted for slide walls. ‘Everything is possible if you think in opportunities’

EASE OF BUILD As mentioned previously, the load barer wall about pre-fabricated material in panels form and will be covered by aluminum cladding. The interior fabrication as same as easiness the exterior, following by IKEA cabinets to build kitchen and case. Why IKEA products? Because, IKEA has built a wide base of need and ease of build included a shortage of space and recycled materials to end up with products meets the need and everyone can build. LEGO is such an inspiring source to the build industry, just “Think LEGO” and it will end with a simple components able to fits together as parts to be a one piece, wall, cladding, flooring, even glassing and sealing. It’s full of enjoyment to design a building able to be built by anyone.

‘Each part will fit in its place, just pick the right tool’

MATERIAL CHOICES The material that been chosen to build “THE EXPANDABLE” ticked some boxes to be approved to use.   Recycled   Light weight   Ability of forming as LEGO system (units)   Ability to install and uninstall   Able for a few number persons to carry and build   Affordable and can be found on the market   Meets the need and use Can join together as LEGO.

(SIPS)Structural Isolated Panels SIPS are a sandwich of oriented strand board with an insulating rigid Polyurethane core. The polyurethane core used in the SIP Building Systems Structural Insulated Panels is zero Ozone Depletion Potential and has a Low Global Warming Potential. Why SIPS?   structural performance, load 90 kN/m   Standard dimensions   Thermal, down to 0.10W/m².K   fire performance, double layer up to 60 min   acoustics   durability, up to 60 years life time   air tightness and ventilation ‘Meets the regulations and need too’

COST SERVICES (power/water) “THE ECPANDABLE” designed and shaped in term of reduce the need of services sources, it can generate its power to run form the upper PV panels to save in batteries , and has a rainwater collector to contain it in lower tank. PVs been developed over the last years and those 10 panels has the technology to generate 3-4Kw and charge it into batteries, so it might seem no need for local energy source to be run. The rainwater collector might not tick the box, depending on the whether conditions, so it might be required to connect “THE EXPANDABLE” to local water source to fill the tank and to drainage to release gray water.

‘Shaped to save energy from inside out’

“THE EXPANDABLE” save the power during the day time, because it shaped to allows the natural light to come throw and bright the interior space by an average and keep the rest for the bright furniture to fill the the atmosphere with balanced brightness

WEIGHT OF POD “THE EXPANDABLE” concept deigned to set on top of any building’s roof without making any scarf or heavy load to the origin building. The material chosen carefully in term of weight and build regulations standard to achieve the minimum weight compered to any building at the same scale use regular material. Its made from plywood, SIP, covered by aluminum panels of cladding.
