EDITOR’S LETTER

By 2021, the retail value of the Middle East’s beauty industry is expected to reach $47.5billion, an astounding figure, but one that is unsurprising if you look around at the beautifully made-up faces that surround you. An important form of expression in Arabia since the days of Cleopatra with her captivating feline eyes, nearly nowhere else do you see such a demonstration of women who know how to use a make-up brush, from the strong eyeliner and bold lips, to the perfectly contoured cheeks… we know how to make up our faces. Out of this love, countless businesses have been born, one of the most notable being the stratospheric rise of the billion-dollar Huda Beauty make-up empire, headed up by Dubaibased Iraqi-American sisters Huda and Mona Kattan. In Life & Style on page 144, the smart and beautiful entrepreneur Mona Kattan shares anecdotes for success and discusses her most recent move into fragrance, photographed in the chic surroundings of her home on Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah. In Modern Beauty, page 104, four of the region’s most prominent beauty influencers tell us what makes them tick, share the products they love now and explore what it means to be beautiful today. A self-confessed beauty junkie myself, the issue is a veritabel feast of inspiration, expert advice and the latest buys to quench any beauty thirst. DIOR 30 MONTAIGNE IN CALF SKIN

ON OUR RADAR Dior knows a thing or two about creating coveted arm candy, the most recent of which is the sleek, chic Dior 30 Montaigne. Created as part of a seasonless new collection designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri and named after the house’s flagship address in Paris, the timeless capsule encompasses accessories and ready-to-wear with signature Dior pieces such as the classic Bar Jacket and J’Adior slingback heels at the core of the “mini wardrobe”. Already seen thrown over the arm of the who’s who, the Dior 30 Montaigne bag pays homage to the house’s timeless appeal with a simple rectangle design featuring a wide flap secured by a large CD clasp. The boxy new silhouette, in five shades of calfskin leather and two canvas logo versions, is a surefire hit and sound style investment. DIOR 30 MONTAIGNE IN CANVAS

WOVEN WITH LOVE Known for his love of travel, and knack of finding off-the-beaten-track places to put down roots, Christian Louboutin’s globetrotting has seen countless collections inspired by his nomadic lifestyle. This summer, steeped in culture and bursting with life, Portugal is the source of inspiration for the new Portugaba bag, where every detail from its distinctive tassels to the fringing on its body is handmade by the exceptional skill of a different Portuguese artisan. “I’ve discovered people with a great savoir-faire and a real sense for colour combinations and patterns. It gave me the desire to design a bag as a tribute to the love I have for this country,” says Christian. Using techniques like puxado, ripado and manteses, practices typical to the region that require meticulous attention to detail and hours of painstaking work, the Portugaba is a super-covetable holiday buy, a celebration of the talent and the artisans of the quiet, tiny villages of Portugal.

WANDLER WANDERS INTO SHOES After becoming the most-wanted bag brand on the planet when she launched her instantly-cult, trapeze-shaped totes and belt-bags two years ago, Dutch designer Elza Wandler has expanded her eponymous line with a striking new range of shoes. One of the most anticipated launches of the season, the five-piece collection from the Amersterdambased accessories brand follows Elza’s signature, structural silhouette and exquisite attention to detail, crafted using the finest Italian leathers in a handful of paintbox shades. Guaranteed to be seen all over your Instagram feed this summer, they’re literally hot to trot. Wandler.com

Alighieri’s new collection of espadrilles, inspired by Salvador Dali

Naming her label after Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, literature-loving London-based jewellery designer Rosh Mahtani has gained a following with style makers including Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Olivia Wilde with her dazzling coin medallions and gold-plated trinkets. This summer, Rosh is taking her Midas touch to footwear, joining forces with online giant Net-a-Porter on a new line of artisanal espadrilles featuring her signature talismans. Leaving behind the heroes, demons and mythical creatures of Dante Alighieri, she turned to Salvador Dalí’s dark interpretation of the poem’s underworld for her new designs. “Nobody depicted Dante’s journey

34 MOSCHINO

How Jeremy Scott took a felt tip and brought sketches to life for Moschino’s S/S19 If the box of pens posing as the invitation was a precursor of what Jeremy Scott had up his sleeve for S/S19, those attending the Moschino show should have predicted an artistic masterclass was on the cards. The American designer may well be known for pulling one or two manic, out-of-the-box ideas from his undoubtedly jauntily-angled thinking cap, but for spring, Jeremy’s show was all about the drama of being a creative. Starting the show with a panicked, “Where are you?” phone call from Gigi Hadid, he explains that not only is he running late for his very own presentation, he has nothing to show but his collection sketches. “Pull something together,” Gigi advises, to which he responds, “Okay, I’ll be right there.” Cue a dream sequence, where Jeremy is a designer of decades gone by, holed up in his Parisian atelier, with his catwalk a re-creation of YSL’s studio, which occupies the second floor of the Musée Yves Saint Laurent. True to his word, all he had were sketches to show, which, as if by magic, burst into life on the catwalk. With a distinct ’80s vibe to the collection – indeed, Norwegian band A-ha’s music video for their 1985 single Take On Me came to mind, which sees a black and white sketched comic book character sucked out of the page into a technicolour reality – sharply-cut, boxy jackets accentuated at the waist with giant bows, pouffy shoulders, ruffled skirts, tapered pants and an army of wrap dresses paraded the runway, coloured in with hurridly-done magic-marker-esque scribbles in black and rainbow bright shades. Topped off with angled, 1940’s Dior-style hats and elbowlength gloves, the look was poised and precise with a fun, painterly edge – showing off expert craftmanship with Jeremy’s signature frivolity. An entire segment dedicated to Moschino’s teddy bear mascot followed, while a finale of surrealist gowns – one made out of a giant pair of scissors; one fringed in thousands of sewing needles with a thimble for a hat; a canvas, chalk-marked toile catsuit finished with a giant tape measure fashioned into a stole – made for a genuinely animated display of almost Disney-esque proportions. As Gigi Hadid closed the show as Moschino’s bride in a white puffball mini, her huge veil ‘carried’ by butterflies, while fashion’s reality of manic scheduling and multiple collection juggling is all too evident, Jeremy’s scribbled fantasy of modern designer life made for a welcome break of (literal) comic relief.

FENDI

In a season of caramel and toffee tones, it’s time to shift your wardrobe into neutral Toffee, caramel and the milkiest mocha – S/S19’s catwalks were ruled by the Beige Brigade. Led by Max Mara, who gave us a muted palette masterclass that manifested itself in this season’s most coveted cover-up, at Fendi, transparent vinyl jackets with tan leather pockets matched tan-trimmed bucket bags that swung at the model’s sides. Chanel opted for beachside glamour, channeled in sandy-hued outfits complete with raw-edge straw hats; while Chloé nailed beige boho deluxe, with Natacha Ramsay-Levi’s slinky one-sleeved maxi dresses and sarongs in luxe beachy hues. City slicker or Ibizan island goddess, this is monotone with major fashion mileage.

A NEW

EXPRESSION Six contemporary artists turn Louis Vuitton’s classic Capucines bag into custom works of art

Words by Dina Kabbani

T

he idea that fashion is art, and vice versa, has been one of debate for decades. It’s a conversation designers and artists have shared, argued over and explored through many a collaboration between the two worlds. And this season, it’s one that Louis Vuitton is tackling again with its latest art project, Arty Capucines. Launched in 2013, and named after Rue des Capucines, the Parisian street on which Louis Vuitton opened his first store, the collaboration sees a handful of talented contemporary artists assigned to reinvent the French fashion house’s iconic Capucines bag. This is not the first time the maison has given carte blanche to notable creatives to do as they please with one of its most timeless accessories; revered names like Stephen Sprouse, Takashi Murakami and Richard Prince have all previously lent their artistic touches to the brand’s coveted pieces. The latest reworkings include signatures of six contemporary artists; Alex Israel’s renowned wave motif; Sam Fall’s use of the natural world; Urs Fischer’s impish embellishments; Nicholas Hlobo’s intricate two and three-dimensional work, Tschabalala Self ’s collages and Jonas Wood’s lush, colourful landscapes – the results of which are a showcase of the artists’ creativity, weaved beautifully through the modern innovation and traditional expertise of the Louis Vuitton ateliers. “The brief was to make the classic Capucines, with its understated simplicity and clean lines, an art piece of our own,” explains Jonas Wood, the Los Angeles-based artist who constructed his version of the Capucines around one of his landscape pot paintings. Using a process of layering and collaging from photographs and drawings, he was inspired by the play of isolated plant forms on painted vessels, bringing forth those abstract geometric shapes and transforming them into prints to use on the bag’s calfskin leather. “I used a similar technique to my work

ARTY CAPUCINES BY ALEX ISREAL Alex brings his wave motif to life, transplanting the high-gloss rendering of Los Angeles living to this most Parisian of bags.

process using outlines of pots and vases, created by my artist wife Shio Kusaka. The resulting patterns at first appear black and white, but are actually 13 different shades that faithfully reproduce my original colour palette,” says Jonas. “The printed leather is then embroidered with over 200,000 stitches that outline the patterns to create an impression of rich, tactile texture and depth – the perfect setting for the matte pink LV logo, the same colour used for the bag’s striking lining.” And the bursts of colour on Jonas’ Capucines continue elsewhere, in the shape of a cheeky, spectacle-wearing giraffe bag charm, manufactured using high-definition printing. “My Capucines is a disorientating compression of spaces and saturation of patterns; it’s lush and colourful as all my works, and invokes the worlds of artists such as Henri Matisse and David Hockney,” says Jonas of his vision. “In this precise project, I used the classic bag as a white canvas and was able to portray my artistic aesthetic on it the same way I usually would. I made Capucines my own, whilst still maintaining its main Louis Vuitton features. In the end, I was able to unleash my creative soul to create the perfect piece of art in the form of a purse.”

ARTY CAPUCINES BY SAM FALLS Sam’s trademark pigmentation technique is used on leaves and flowers from the gardens of the LV family home in Asnières.

ARTY CAPUCINES BY TCHABALALA SELF Tchabalala breaks down the LV monogram and rebuilds it using different types of leather upcycled from the house’s ateliers.

From left: The latest incarnation of the Capucines by Nicholas Hlobo, Alex Isreal and Jonas Wood

The collaboration saw Jonas and the Louis Vuitton ateliers work in tandem, each contributing their know-how to bring to life his vision for the brand’s classic bag. “When I was shown the different techniques and materials that we could use to recreate my paintings, one of the things that stood out was the way we could effectively draw a line by using a kind of bundled thread created by the sewing machine. I really like that the thread sits on top of the surface of the bag – it heightens the contrasts of the two colours,” says Jonas. “I really wanted to put some texture, pattern, and colour into the design as well, so I used sections from three different paintings of mine for the bag’s surface. We developed the outer shell using stained leather that was then sewn into the bag; it was cool the way that we were able to recreate all the details of the painted patterns using totally different materials.” With a primary mission to create a desirable object, Jonas is delighted with the final product, “I mean, I don’t use bags, but I would wear it,” he says. “Just as any woman that will understand the art behind the piece and the savoir faire, which is the key behind all the Louis Vuitton pieces.” The ArtyCapucines collection will be available worldwide from 25 June, 2019

Every child deserves to have a proper education, to have the opportunity of a better life, and invest in themselves now for the future. Tara Emad, actress

THE FACE:

The regional star of Bulgari and Save the Children’s new Give Hope campaign, Egyptian actress Tara Emad reveals her part in Bulgari’s first Middle Eastern project celebrating the 10-year anniversary between the legendary jewellery house and the international children’s charity.

Raising over 330 million dirhams globally since they joined forces in 2009 to commemorate Bulgari’s 125th anniversary, the Italian jewellers and charity Save the Children have given more than 1.5 million vulnerable children in 34 countries the chance of a better future by providing them with an education. This year, celebrating the 10th anniversary of this ambitious partnership, Bulgari and Save The Children have added a custommade silver and onyx pendant to their existing fundraising collection, with Dhs370 of each purchase going to the charity in a bid to raise a further 30 million dirhams, and mark Save the Children’s 100 year milestone, in a unique joint celebration. Shot by renowned British fashion photographer Rankin, who has supported countless international charities throughout his career, and starring an array of Middle Eastern celebrities and influencers, the 2019 Give Hope campaign is the first local project of its kind for Save the Children and Bulgari Middle East. “Having the chance to be a part of this incredible first in the region for Bulgari and Save the Children was such a privelege,” revealed the Egyptian actress when we met at the Give Hope campaign launch at Dubai’s Bulgari Resort. “This is my second year as a member of the Bulgari family, and I’ve always wanted to support the tireless campaigning that Save the Children undertakes. To be asked to work on a collaboration between these two amazing brands was literally a dream come true,” says Tara.

A keen supporter of both animal and women’s rights in her home country, Tara’s involvement with the Give Hope campaign allowed her the opportunity to do more to help underprivileged children in Egypt. “Doing something else to make a difference to the lives of children in my homeland was a no-brainer,” says the 26-year-old actress, who recently took part in a charity initiative to empower and educate teenage girls in rural parts of the country. “I’ve always been focused upon the importance of education. To me, it’s central to everything,” she explains. “Having been part of a group informing teenage girls they have a choice in life not to marry young, and how staying on in school can transform their future, I want to be a spokesperson to show those less fortunate how vitally important education is. It’s something I believe in strongly, especially seeing the difference it can make to those who didn’t think they had a chance of a decent future in my own country.” Alongside eight other Middle Eastern stars and influencers in the campaign, including Lebanese actress Nadine Nassib Njeim and Dubai-based, Saudi-born fashion designer Alanoud Badr, Tara’s dedication to the cause is unwavering. “Every child deserves to have a proper education, to have the opportunity of a better life, and invest in themselves now for the future. aren Wazen’s kohl-rimmed eyes, finished off with a dramatic flick draw you into the image, but what’s really on show in this particular Instagram post, which has earned over 50,000 likes, is located on the famous influencer’s hand. The sleeves of the black fishnet top that she wears snake over her wrist and reach just shy of her thumb, revealing the real star of the photo: a gold studded ring roped around her finger. Karen, alongside Paris-based fashion blogger Carin Olsson, models in the global digital campaign for Clash de Cartier, the new collection from the French maison. Dressed in an emerald green blouse with an elegant bow tied at the neck, Carin, with her blonde hair pulled back, exudes romance and sophistication, while Karen’s tousled bob gives her a rock ‘n’ roll edge. Karen and Carin aren’t the only fashion influencers fronting the brand’s digital campaign. Cartier recruited pairs of fashion personalities around the world to showcase the versatility of Clash de Cartier, with many noting in their social media captions, “Rive Gauche vs Rive Droite – which side are you on?” (Rive Gauche and Rive Droite are the two sides of Paris, divided by the Seine River). The duos each posted their images and tagged the next pair of influencers, creating a sort of digital chain between them all, with each showcasing his or her unique style while wearing Clash de Cartier rings. Rebel versus royal is the theme of the campaign, signifying the duality that’s presented by Clash de Cartier. “It has this agility; it seems spiky but at the same time it is soft. When you see that from afar, you have the impression that it is minimal, but at the same time it is very refined,” explains Sophie Doireau, managing director of Cartier Middle East. “It’s really recognisable – it’s really Cartier at first glance.”

Studs and spikes – typically emblematic of punk and grunge, combine in brilliant gold rings, bracelets, hoop earrings and a spectacular necklace. Some of the pieces are set with diamonds, elevating them even further, and, come September, the collection will be available in white gold too. Each square stud features two cone-shaped spikes on either side, making the designs look like delicate bullets strung together to create an armour-like appearance. To introduce the collection, Cartier staged a three-day launch in Paris, bringing together A-list celebrities from around the world including Claire Foy, Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tinie Tempah and face of the new collection, 27-year-old actress, Kaya Scodelario. With her Brazilian heritage, Kaya, who was raised in England, embodies the cultural clash that this new range celebrates. The launch festivities were also modelled around this juxtaposing theme – stars were treated to lunch at a pop-up Paris-meets-New York bistro named Bronx Brasserie, and special guests of the maison were welcomed to their hotel with a platter of caviar and French fries in their rooms. It’s a brilliant show of Cartier cleverly catering to millennials’ tendencies to chronicle their experiences on Snapchat and document their luxury splurges on Instagram, proving Cartier’s ability to evolve with the times, whilst attracting fresh, new spending power. “The younger generation don’t only want to buy things, it’s not about purchasing, it’s about the experience,” says Sophie. “It’s about explaining to them, and giving them stories. Cartier is not a supermarket – we need to give a background to what we sell. We sell creations for occasions, so it’s something you buy for a gift, for a wedding, for yourself, so you need to explain.”

It isn’t a hard sell, that’s for sure. The storied brand’s famous Love bracelets have long been coveted by women worldwide, becoming the ultimate symbol of romance. Though beneath the glory of owning one of these pieces, is also a story – first designed by Aldo Cipullo in 1969, the bracelet, engraved with distinctive circular emblems with horizontal lines (representing the head of a screw), was modelled after the chastity belt – a contraption that husbands would lock around their wives’ waists while they were away. The Love bracelet, which comes with its own small screwdriver to fasten and unfasten it to the wearer’s wrist, in this way represents eternal love. Created half a century ago, the Love collection still retains its appeal, and has even earned heirloom status, as has the Panthère de Cartier – one of the world’s most lustedafter jewellery watches of all time, and particularly popular in the Middle East, where it’s frequently spotted under the sleeve of an abaya, coupled with a Love bracelet, and perhaps, a Love ring, along with one of the brand’s Juste un Clou (“just a nail”) bangles. While Clash de Cartier may first appear to be a departure from the maison’s heritage aesthetic, there’s a simplicity to the edginess of the range, which Sophie says will resonate with wearers of all ages. “This is something you can wear on a

daily basis, and you can wear it when you are twenty years old,” she says. The Clash collection is versatile, and in true Cartier fashion, stackable. “This is a tradition, and this is perfect for Cartier,” says Sophie, who notes that stacking the brand’s heritage pieces is something of a timeless practice. “We have more statement pieces with diamonds that our clients love, especially in the Middle East,” she explains, pointing out that the brand’s Middle Eastern clients typically purchase more than just one piece from Cartier collections. “Women in the region really want a full set,” she smiles. Sophie sheds light on the deep-rooted relationship between Cartier and the Middle East: Jacques Cartier, grandson of the maison’s founder, Louis-Francois Cartier, journeyed to the region in 1912 to source pearls and gemstones. “He came to Bahrain, to Dubai, to Oman, staying with locals of these countries and lived their lives with them one century ago,” she reveals. “It’s this historical link that we are so lucky to have.” Excerpts from the explorer’s diary detail his boat trip past the Omani island of Musandam, and his visit to Sheikh Eisa of Bahrain. He describes neighbourhoods of old Dubai as “a labyrinth,” and writes about the donkeys at the port that transport goods from boats to customs. Photos from the brand’s archive show the

jeweller on boats searching the seas for oysters with pearl fishers, and having intimate dinners with Arabian sheikhs. Cartier is a name that elite families in the Middle East are extremely familiar with. “We have been very present in the Middle East,” says Sophie, adding that clients here have long been loyal to the jewellery house, even before its first boutique in Dubai opened in 2004. “Our clients [have been going to] Europe – to London, Paris, and Geneva for decades. They love Cartier for its quality and craftsmanship, and they are confident that a Cartier piece should be passed down from one generation to another generation.” And, just as the clients are loyal to the brand, Cartier, in return, has previously crafted special pieces that are exclusive to the Middle East. These include Amulette de Cartier earrings and a bangle in malachite and mother of pearl, as well as a Drive de Cartier watch featuring an emerald-toned leather strap. The maison’s connection with the Middle East was further fortified just this past month when, at the 2019 Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards (which has provided support and funding to women-led businesses since 2006), UAE’s Hibah Shahta, co-founder of Child Early Intervention Medical Centre, was among the award winners. Her clinic provides educational support and therapy to kids and young adults with special needs. According to Sophie, female empowerment is a message that’s at the crux of Cartier’s ethos today. Her own role as managing director in a field historically dominated by men is a testament to that. “We have many women who are handling management positions – we are more than 50 per cent women,” she says. And while some of the brand’s most famous pieces – like it’s Love bracelet for instance – tell a traditional story of male-led romance, today’s woman buys her own jewels, instead of waiting for a man to buy them for her. “It is a sense of achievement. I am proud, I can offer myself a creation,” says Sophie, adding that it’s an investment with loaded value. “You buy a piece of jewellery now, and your daughter will be very happy to wear it in later years. It’s something that you keep – something that is super-strong and timeless. What we say is that collections created today are treasures of tomorrow. We are the guardians. This is the raison d’etre, the sense of Cartier for me.” Clash de Cartier is no exception. Classic and ageless yet still statement-making, the spikes and studs will strike a chord with consumers on both sides of the style spectrum – the rebels, the royals, and everyone in between.

MODERN BEAUTY

As an entire generation’s obsession with beauty grows these four women, in a sea of a thousand perfectly made- up faces, stand out

106 DEE MOHAMUD Somali, content creator

Impossible to miss with her bouncy cloud of glorious curls, Dee Mohamud is all about the ‘fro. A self-proclaimed beauty connoisseur, she’s built an online following for those who share her passion and adoration for a naturally wild mane. And although she might be all about the big and bold today, it wasn’t always hair trials and triumphs for the 26-year-old content creator. “Growing up I didn’t feel beautiful,” reflects Dee. “I remember feeling like I had to work so hard at looking good when other girls that I considered beautiful didn’t. I spent hours weekly straightening my hair, which was long, curly, frizzy and ‘unacceptably big.’ I constantly compared myself to that image of ‘beautiful’ women portrayed by the media and on magazine covers, who had straight blonde hair and big blue eyes. And thought I could never look like that, so I could never be beautiful. It’s definitely something that I’m working on, and every day I take steps towards it.” Fast-forward to today, and

It’s like a super power; feeling good about yourself is infectious and other people will pick up on that beautiful energy that you radiate. Dee Mohamud things have changed for the Somali-born, Dubai-based beauty. What started out as a simple vision to document her journey on social media has slowly turned into more than just a casual project; Dee is part of a growing group of African content creators in the region inspiring a generation of young girls to defy Western beauty standards and nurture their natural manes. “I am excited that young girls have better representation in the media than I did growing up,” she explains. “It’s all about accepting yourself. If you can’t love the way you look, how do you expect others to? It’s like a super power; feeling good about yourself is infectious and other people will pick up on that beautiful energy that you radiate. Yara Shahidi is one of the reasons I decided to wear my hair natural. Watching her series Grownish gave me the push I needed to accept my curls and experiment with them.” And embrace them she did. Turning what once was the cause of her insecurity into what is now her signature and much sought-after look, she takes time over her hair, and puts in the effort to maintain it. “When it comes to my hair, moisture is very important. All the products I use don’t contain sulphates, silicones, parabens, artificial fragrances or colours. Products that contain chemicals tend to weigh down my curls and cause damage,” explains Dee of her hair routine, which she shares with her followers via YouTube tutorials. “I do a few things to keep it in good shape. I soak

my hair in coconut and castor oil to deep condition and promote growth, and I tie it up in a pineapple when I sleep using a silk scrunchie, then spray it with water in the morning to re-define the curls.” Her affinity and passion for beauty doesn’t stop at her curly mass, she is also not one to shy away from getting experimental with her makeup looks. “I love the new Tarteist Pro Remix and Too Faced Natural Lust Eyeshadow palettes. The textures are incredible, and the colours are so much fun to play around with,” she says. “For me, beauty began with my mother, and her beautiful collection of YSL lipsticks and MAC eyeshadows. It was so cool seeing her transform herself with different products – it’s what got me into beauty.” And it seems she went down the right path, she was recently named as one of the faces for the new Bobbi Brown foundation range extension campaign, a major feat for a girl that once thought she was just average-looking.

HANNAH RASEKH British-Jordanian, beauty & fashion entrepreneur

Nothing is subtle about social media influencer Hannah Rasekh’s beauty. It’s there in full bloom, usually bare-faced on Instagram. The 30-year-old BritishJordanian has garnered a cult online following, making a name for herself by pulling together cool fashion ensembles that are of-the-moment and simultaneously timeless. Undeniably gorgeous, as displayed through her beautifully-shot social media posts, the willowy blonde is ambitious too, landing coveted roles as the face of Givenchy Beauty regionally, as well as a partnership role with luxury skincare brand, Sisley Paris. And it’s all thanks to a beauty obsession she developed at school. “That was the point where beauty became a priority for me – when black eyeliner and lots of lip gloss were all the rage in the early noughties. It was also around that time that I started to properly moisturise,” says Hannah. “As I got older, I learned to accept that beauty is subjective. As clichéd as it may sound, everyone is beautiful in

their own unique way.” Her beauty journey has uncovered a passion for skincare she never knew she had. “I’ve developed something of an obsession, so it’s become a topic I’m now associated with,” she explains. “I’m always on shoots, so I get to learn tips and tricks from hair and make-up artists. Pioneers of the beauty and skincare industry are my inspiration, such as Isabelle d’Ornano, co-founder of Sisley Paris and Jessica Alba, whose company Honest promotes ethical beauty consumerism. They give me the incentive to be and do better in my field of work.” An advocate of ‘love the skin you’re in and nourish it,’ Hannah practices what she preaches, keeping her Saturdays free so she can dedicate time to skincare sessions where she spends a few hours applying masks and pampering herself. “I love Sisley Paris’s Black Rose Precious Face Oil and their Sisleya Anti-wrinkle Serum. I follow six basic steps day and night: I cleanse, tone, apply serum, eye cream, oil drops and seal it all with either a moisturiser with SPF or a night cream. If that isn’t commitment, I don’t know what is!” she laughs. “It’s a whole different ball game for me now. I’m 30, so my skin has changed, therefore my products have had to change too. It’s a more concentrated routine. My skin is in much better condition

now than it was five years ago. I think if you commit to looking after your skin when you’re young, it will age beautifully.” As well as perfecting her skin with creams and serums, Hannah hones her make-up skills with go-to’s including Hourglass’ Gel Eye Liner, Charlotte Tilbury’s Bronzed Garnet Eyeshadow Pencil and Control Lipstick by Laura Mercier. “I learn most of my tips from beauty influencers actually. Ola Farahat taught me that I must blend my foundation upwards, and I learned to contour my temples from Rania Fawaz,” she says. “Instagram can be a great place for beauty inspiration if its raw and organic, but unfortunately it also invites many negative feelings of comparison in a very pressurised environment. So I try to constantly remind myself that beauty is subjective, and that not everything you see is real. At the end of the day, you are you, and that is your greatest power. If you accept that, then you’ll find you’ll appreciate yourself a lot more.”

RHEA JACOBS Indian, Marc Jacobs Beauty ambassador

Rhea Jacobs is a force to be reckoned with. At the age of 25, the Indian-born, Dubai-based talent has managed to land herself one of beauty’s biggest and most coveted roles as one of Marc Jacobs’ beauty ambassadors, a position she takes very seriously. “Beauty standards now amass an array of characteristics and features that cover a wider spectrum of individuality. I’m incredibly proud to be a part of this movement,” says Rhea. “Brands now understand that inclusivity is the future. You can no longer cater to just a handful of the audience but now make everyone feel included.” Strong, independent and armed with make-up looks that are just as arresting as her beliefs, Rhea is almost chameleonlike, shifting from one look to the other with

the swipe of a Marc Jacobs make-up brush. “My approach to make-up is always to let skincare do half the job, and use the base very minimally. I usually like to highlight my eyes more, or alternate the intensity from them to my lips,” she explains. “But eyes are definitely a main focus. It’s the first feature I notice about someone, and feel it best represents the beauty of a person.” From concealer (she rarely uses foundation), setting powder and stick eyeshadow to blush, eyeliner and lipstick, her beauty routine is one to memorise and so are her make-up must-haves which include Marc Jacobs Accomplice Blurring Powder, a tinted lip balm by Elizabeth Arden and Dr Barbara Sturm’s Hyaluronic Serum. And although her beauty cupboard

is every bit as glamorous as you’d expect, it’s her skincare regime that’s her crowning glory. “I follow a strict routine both morning and night. You’ll never find me sleeping in my make-up, and I always wear SPF, even when I’m indoors,” Rhea explains of her super-simple daily must-dos. “When I was younger, skincare meant just moisturiser and sunscreen. Back then, the options were so limited. Now they’re intensive, and target every concern there is – there are toners, serums, eye creams, moisturisers, sunscreens and more for every issue that needs to be addressed. In five years, I’ve moved on from two products to more than seven or eight.” And she pays that same meticulous attention to haircare, using her own homemade concoctions for scrubs to keep her mane fabulously shiny. You’d think that with all the make-up and skincare ammunition she packs, her confidence would always be sky-high. “Growing up, there have been many times I’ve felt insecure about the way I look. During your formative years, all you want to do is fit in and look like everyone else – it’s only when you’re older and wiser that you realise the beauty of standing out and being different,” she explains. “My mother instilled in me that beauty is self-defined, that it’s much more than skin deep. I think it was the act of watching her go out to work every day, and to be as empowered as she is, that showed me real strength and beauty.”

SORAYA SHAWKY Egyptian, make-up artist

It’s not just her striking beauty and glossy brunette mane that helps make-up artist Soraya Shawky stand out from the crowd, but her incredible talent and perseverance to succeed. “It took me a lot of practice, hard work, dedication and mostly patience to reach the level I am at today,” explains the 35-year-old make-up artist and beauty consultant. Mixing her own homemade creams and products as a curious teenager, she dreamed of working in the beauty industry. “I knew I wanted to work in the business from the age of 14, but I just wasn’t sure how, and I wasn’t even aware of the existence of professional make-up artists,” she recalls. Quitting her Cairo desk job in 2009 to pursue her dream career, after two years of working in make-up artistry

in Egypt she decided to get “a proper education” and moved to Barcelona to study, where she attained a masters in make-up and cosmetology. Relocating to the UAE from Switzerland in 2017 to work as a professional make-up artist, she quickly gained a loyal base of glamorous clients, along with a cult following from her online beauty tutorials, and has since developed a luxury wig line, Starlet, which recently debuted in Egypt and is set to launch soon in the UAE. Endlessly inspiring as she is creative, Soraya has a lot of feelings about beauty, as you’d expect from a woman raised by a mother and grandmother who cared passionately about beauty and hair. “I was fascinated by how committed they were to their daily skincare regimes. They

created their own scrubs and masks using things you’d find in your kitchen,” she shares. Soraya’s philosophy is that beauty is all about commitment, and sticks to a routine she swears by. “I’ve followed the same haircare steps since I was a child! My mother used to massage organic coconut oil into my scalp all the way to the ends, leave it on for an hour and then wash. I still do this twice a week. I also love using hair masks made with bone marrow.” While traditional home-made products kick-started Soraya’s beauty obsession, her bathroom cabinet is now stocked with an array of luxury skin treats, ranging from Shiseido and La Mer to Elemis and Elizabeth Arden. “I have three beauty routines; daily, weekly and monthly. I focus on everything,” she explains. “My daily regime consists of cleansing, toning, hydrating and protecting my skin. I apply three different types of serum after toner, followed by day cream and sunblock. My weekly routine focuses on deep cleaning, using exfoliants and mud masks to cleanse pores and collagen masks to target fine lines. My monthly routine is a visit to the clinic where I get a professional treatment, depending on the condition of my skin.” Her beauty mantra is simple; always invest in great skincare. As she wisely states, “After all, you can only achieve great make-up when you have great skin underneath.”

This highly concentrated formula rich in acacia, helps reduce fine lines and boosts the natural synthesis of collagen. For the body, I recommend the Body Contour Cream, which is known for its highly effective fat-burning and cellulite-reducing properties. It contains a powerful concentration of caffeine, carnitine and guarana. The efficiency of the product can be further increased, when used in conjunction with our Dr Burgener Cellulite Corrective Gel, to leave you with a beautiful silhouette. The advice: Pollution, sand and dust damages the skin’s DNA, increasing the production of free radicals which will accelerate the ageing process, so choose skincare with a lot of antioxidants and anti-free radicals such as our Gold Grand CRU Gold Complex and our Repairing Green Caviar Cream which will fight against the pollution as well as the DNA damage. MOJEH BEAUTY

HAIR TODAY, GONE TOMORROW Is it really something in the water? Or is it more than that? MOJEH meets the hair loss expert disproving one of the region’s biggest beauty myths – and reveals the decades of scientific research behind their discoveries Words by Lucy Wildman

Photography: Anthony Arquior

D

ubai is world-famous for many things; having the tallest, fastest, biggest and best of everything are the most commonly-known accolades. But ask any man or woman who’s been in the city for a number of years, and they’ll tell you something else that may not be so internationally recognised – living in Dubai seems to make their hair fall out. From more strands than you’d expect finding their way down the plug hole every morning, to hair that doesn’t feel quite as thick as it used to, there’s no denying that something bad seems to happen to your crowning glory once you’ve been residing in this city for a while – something that’s as far from Dubai’s glamorous image as it possibly could be. So what’s behind this widely-experienced problem? By and large, the local water gets most of the blame. But despite numerous studies showing the UAE’s main water supply contains nothing that causes hair to fall out, that still doesn’t stop the commonly-held belief perpetuating itself year in, year out. Admittedly, it seems the most feasible of culprits, since it’s the common denominator in all of our haircare routines. But if it’s not the water, what is it that seemingly makes hair loss a more significant problem here than in other parts of the world? “The water in the UAE has actually got nothing to do with why you’re losing your hair,” says Lars Skjøth, founder and head of research and development at Danish hair loss specialists, Harklinikken, when we meet at his Dubai clinic on Jumeirah Beach Road. “People whose hair is thinning here speculate on a variety of potentially problematic factors, and Dubai’s water is the first thing they blame. But they also blame the weather, or maybe the fact they dye their hair – however, neither of these things, or numerous others, are the singular reason for why their hair is thinning,” he explains. Having treated over 100,000 clients worldwide since opening his first hair loss clinic in Copenhagen in 1992, including European royalty and numerous high-profile celebrities, Harklinikken is renowned

for unparalled results in regenerative hair treatment, and has helped thousands of Middle Eastern clients facing thinning and hair loss regain their mane. “There are a number of combined issues that can exacerbate a developing or existing hair loss problem,” continues Lars. “Before we even opened a clinic in Dubai, I started doing research about the region, because Middle Eastern clients were travelling all the way to Denmark to see us for consultations and treatment. I realised that not only were there a lot of people experiencing significant hair loss issues in this part of the world, but also that the clients we were treating were responding really well to our methods.” Hair loss is typically categorised into two types: genetic, where there is a hereditary predisposition to hair thinning, and reactive, where hair loss is the result of a trigger or trauma. And while these problems are undisputedly a global issue, there are a number of environmental factors in the Middle East that combine to heighten the hair loss problem faced by the regional population. “Blaming the water alone simply isn’t correct,” explains Lars. “People here are constantly exposed to a number of different kinds of environmental stress they simply wouldn’t face if they lived somewhere like Europe, for example. Here in the UAE, you are consistently exposed to massive heat, light and constant air conditioning. You also inadvertantly end up consuming a lot of foods that come from local crops or animals that are not grown or reared on nutrient-rich soils like you’d find in countries that benefit from more temperate climates. Then there’s the fact that you could be deficient in vitamin D, because you don’t spend enough time out in the sun, since it’s frequently too hot, so you stay indoors, or wear a high SPF sunscreen to protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays. And then there’ s the water. It’s perfectly safe, of course, but the desalination process doesn’t just remove the salt, it also removes other trace minerals, which you can’t replace, but play an important part in water’s chemical composition.”

According to the American Academy of Dermatologists, it’s normal to lose anywhere between 50 and 100 strands of hair on a daily basis. People with longer hair may find it more noticeable, but since there are around 100,000 hair follicles on the average person’s scalp, the loss of 100 or so hairs every day doesn’t make a particularly big difference to the hair’s overall appearance. But when you start shedding significantly more than that, or notice that hairs aren’t growing back, that’s the time to seek the advice of a specialist. “When it comes to hair loss, there are so many potential triggers, which means it can be tricky to pinpoint why strands are falling out, and henceforth, how to remedy the situation,” says Anabel Kingsley, leading trichologist at the Philip Kingsley Clinic in London, and daughter of renowned trichologist Philip, who founded his eponymous centre in the British capital over 60 years ago. No longer considered a problem that effects just men, research has shown that less than 45 per cent of women go through life with a full head of hair, due to stress, environmental agression, or hereditary factors. “One in three women will experience some type of hair loss in their lifetime,” explains Anabel. “While many assume it’s only older women who are affected by hair loss or female baldness, we see growing numbers in their 20s, 30s and 40s coming to our clinics with hair loss or loss of hair volume. I’m only 35, and as a woman who has recently suffered from stress-related hair loss of her own, know that youth is no barrier to depleted hair.” This kind of reactive hair loss, also

known as telogen effluvium, happens quickly, and can see normal hair fall of up to 100 strands per day suddenly double or triple in number overnight. A reaction to shock, stress, poor diet or a general failure to look after yourself, it’s this type of hair loss that Anabel believes to be on the rise, particularly amongst women, pointing to the increased popularity of fad diets, specifically veganism and vegetarianism. “The hair is a fantastic barometer of your emotional state as well as your diet,” she explains. “Even if you’re only slightly deficient in a nutrient, the body withholds this from the hair first before anywhere else. If you do too much, run on empty, or don’t give yourself time to eat properly, it’s your hair that will pay the price.” Since hair is not an essential tissue, meaning the body can physically survive without it, even if you are really careful whilst following a specific eating plan, it can be hard to get the protein and iron required for hair to grow healthily. And if you’re not eating enough of the correct foods or your body is not absorbing enough of the nutrients, this can result in excessive hair shredding. “I can completely understand my clients’ reasons for being vegan or veggie, but it’s very difficult with those diets to combine the correct food groups to give the hair what it needs,” says Anabel. “Fish and eggs, for example, have all eight essential amino acids that you need, while a grain or legume would only have a few of those. If you only get one set of amino acids from a source of protein, you need to get the rest from somewhere else. The body can make amino acids on its own, but not those eight essential ones, which means they have to be consumed every day. Just taking supplements in the hope they will fill the gaps in the body’s nutritional requirements won’t neccessarily be enough.” Genetic hair loss, where hair thins and loses volume over time, causes hair follicles on the scalp to become sensitive to normal levels of circulating male hormones, known as androgens, with hair follicles getting gradually smaller, producing slightly finer and shorter strands with each passing hair growth cycle. While being hereditary, it can also be exacerbated by stress, which raises those androgen levels, thus concentrating the issue. “Most of us, without even knowing it, are gradually thinning, and actually thinning in a way where the hairs are

slowly miniaturising,” says Lars. “That’s why thinning can sneak up on you – gradually, the hair becomes less and less full, but you may not notice it happening in the beginning,” he explains. “Maybe the hair first becomes a little see-through. Maybe the hair seems straggly, or more wispy, or dry than it ever used to be in the past. And each time a hair falls out, the one that replaces it is not of the same thickness or quality as the one before may have been. So as the hair thins, the more you see of the scalp undernath that was previously covered. And as the hair density decreases, slowly, over a number of years, the hair looks and feel a lot thinner than before.” A pioneer in the science of hair regrowth, and with over 25 years of dedicated research into hereditary and reactive hair loss, the cornerstone of the Harklinikken restorative hair programme is Extract; a nutrient-rich, plant-based product rich in natural tannins, fatty oils and fatty acids, using proprietay ingredients derived from cows milk, burdock root and marigold. Following a thorough assessment of the scalp, hair and hair loss condition, only those candidates Lars is convinced will benefit from their hair regeneration programme will be treated, using state-of-the-art technology to document results, and specialist guidance on the daily application of their custom-made star product. Combined in a 3-step fermentation process unique to Harklinikken, isolating components to heal and care for the scalp, Extract is individually tailored and continually adjusted throughout each client’s specific treatment programme. Applied to thinning areas of the scalp, usually at night, over consecutive months in order to reverse the effects of hair loss or thinning, and improve the quality and texture of the hair, Extract formulations are updated at every follow-up appointment to maximise it’s efficiacy. With daily application key to the programme’s success, regular check-ins to adjust the Extract and specialist meetings to analyse growth, clear changes are typically seen in suitable candidates after just four months.

Four out of five clients go to Harklinikken as referrals, and after the initial four month treatment programme, using hand-blended Extract combined solely with the clinic’s range of colour, perfume, silicone, paraben petrochemical and sls/ els-free cleansing and conditioning products, most clients regain at least 30 per cent of lost hair density, with some achieving up to 60 per cent, according to verified company figures. And while clients say one of the clinic’s many strengths is the fact it doesn’t claim their treatment to be a miracle, the clinically-proven results seen with successful hair regrowth in thousands of satisfied clients is nothing less than compelling. “It’s not about a short-term result here,” says Lars of the evidence that supports the success of Harklinikken’s treatment. Whether clients only follow a short programme to remedy their hair loss problems, or continue their treatment to maintain results for life, if treatment remains consistent, strong, dense, healthy hair is something Lars claims that clients can keep forever. “We’re not just talking about producing a little bit of fine new hair. We’re talking about growing new hair into strong, thick hairs, and doing it consistently,” he says. “Hair loss is categorically not a black and white subject, where one solution suits everybody. It’s about understanding all the minor details which I think you can only do if you spend enough time with the client to appreciate and evaluate their individual problem. Each person’s hair loss story is unique, and there are numerous factors that are a part of it. We try and approach our treatment from as much of a holistic standpoint as possible, really trying to take into consideration all the elements that could directly or indirectly impact upon the situation.” Adding, “Even though I’ve spent many years in the lab, the greatest things I’ve ever learned as a scientist has come from the time I’ve spent in the clinic with clients. Going back to the lab and adjusting my work after returning to the clinic to learn more is why we have actually made a discovery that really and truly works.”

I like to go a little lighter with colour. But I always recommend colours based on my clients’ personality more than the weather! Which products do you recommend for coloured hair? Aftercare is quite straightforward – it’s a question of shampoo and conditioner to lock in the colour. It’s also worth having an appointment between your main balayage treatments to add toner and freshen up your look. How should we protect colour during the summer? Heat and sun do cause issues, but these are easy to guard against. I recommend carrying some sort of heat protection spray to apply when out in the sun. TRAVEL EDIT

THE PENINSULA, PARIS Summer in The City of Light is a glorious experience, and what better time to enjoy one of the world’s most beautiful cities than when the sky is blue, the birds are singing, and Paris seems even more impossibly romantic than usual? Just steps away from the Arc de Triomphe and Avenue de Champs Elysées in the heart of the elegant 16th arrondissement, The Peninsula is one of the finest places from which to explore this magical city, located close to some of the world’s most famous monuments, museums and luxury shopping districts. First opened in 1908 as one of Paris’ most famous grand hotels, it enjoyed 30 years hosting the rich and famous, together with leading lights in the world of art, literature and music during the Belle Epoque and Années Folles when Paris was at the height of it’s creativity and glamour. Since the wartime occupation of Paris, the late 19th-cenury Haussmanian building served as UNESCO headquarters from 1946, before playing as a conference centre for the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and was finally reimagined as The Peninsula Paris in 2014, exquisitely restored to its original glory combining the heritage of one of the world’s oldest hospitality brands with breathtaking contemporary art, furnishings and technology. With Peninsula signatures including the Chinese door lions, the distictive fleet of Rolls-Royce, page boys and the legendary Peninsula afternoon tea served in the lobby, along with one of the most magnificent rooftop terraces in the city, The Peninsula Paris is a constant hub of glamour and activity, never more so than when the world’s fashion elite desccend upon the city for the sartorial spectacular that is Haute Couture Fashion Week every July.

Life & Style Part of the multi-billion dollar beauty empire home-grown in Dubai, Huda Beauty’s global president Mona Kattan invites MOJEH into her stunning Palm Jumeirah villa

M

ona Kattan is one busy lady. The global president for Huda Beauty has just jetted in from LA to allow MOJEH into her home for our interview, and as we pull up outside her sprawling villa on the Palm Jumeirah, we realise we’re not Mona’s only guests. Five cars and two vans are parked outside her house, the latter packed with a Facebook film crew busy carrying equipment to and from their vehicles, while various other very preoccupied-looking people pace the pavement outside, chatting animatedly into their phones. Seemingly, there’s a lot going on Chez Kattan this morning – but as we are welcomed inside, it appears this is just a regular working day for the beauty business mogul. “Come on in! Sorry it’s so hectic,” shouts Mona over the hum of a hairdryer as we make our way into the vast, open-plan kitchen. With a table full of Huda Beauty tech boffins on one side of the room, her PA and PR manager deep in conversation on a pair of sofas in the corner, and surrounded by her glam team as she taps away on a laptop while hair and make-up are simultaneously done, one would imagine that being Mona Kattan requires an ability to multitask on a level that would befuddle even the most adept of career-jugglers. Currently filming the second season of Huda Boss for their YouTube channel; in the midst of a wave of new Huda Beauty product launches; scheduling summer travel arrangements, and in the early stages of planning her wedding, Mona’s life is hurtling along at break-neck speed. But despite the constant madness, the 33-year-old seems unphased by the endless hustle that comes with being part of one of the biggest beauty brands in the world right now.

“We’ve lived here for about 18 months. But we moved at almost exactly the same time as when we got the big investors for Huda Beauty, and then everything changed – we started filming the show, the business underwent rapid developments, it was just craziness on every level,” explains Mona. “Overnight, my life accelerated tenfold. So I haven’t had time yet to really organise the house. But I’m getting there. Just don’t go in my bedroom!” Despite her protestations, Mona’s home looks pretty great to us. Perched on the beach at the end of one of the Palm’s fronds, with huge floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the space with natural light, modern, neutral furnishings offset huge statement artworks that adorn almost every wall. “I like my space to feel exciting. When you walk into the house, I want people to feel inspired and energised.” Revealing she’s barely bought anything new for her latest home, or made any structural changes, Mona intends to fully renovate the property once she has a little more free time. “I’ve waited for a long time to do anything here because I was unsure of what I wanted, and I didn’t want to just jump into something,” she explains. “But first of all, I’d like to build a cabana on the beach. We spend so much time outside in the cooler months, it would be a great thing to invest in and would make a wonderful addition to the house.” With splashes of vivid colour, dynamic artworks and plenty of glamour anchoring the decor, the feeling of positive energy that permeates is undeniable. “I love art, and the pieces I have in my home are very special,” says Mona of her collection. “One of the first pieces I bought was the Ride Fast painting that hangs behind the pool table. I bought it as you see it now,

but when I got it into the house, I thought, ‘This is probably not the best message to send myself every day, because I’m already moving at 1,000 miles per hour.’ I felt I needed something that was going to balance that message out, so I commissioned Ride Slow, with a unicorn being ridden by Jasmine and Aladdin, my two favourite Disney characters. For me, that was key, because it was the first time I basically slapped myself in the face and went, ‘Hold on. You need balance. Stop chasing work, stop chasing everything. But if you must, chase love, chase the equilibrium, chase happiness, chase the unicorn. Chase the fairytale to balance out your life.’” Conversely, her other most-treasured commission is a tribute to the real-life individuals who have motivated her to succeed. “The Tony Robbins painting is really important to me,” she says of the piece that hangs in the library area of her living room. “Tony Robbins, Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama – they’ve all been a huge inspiration. But Tony Robbins was a life-changer. I started reading his books when I was 14 years old, and he felt like my mentor, like a big brother who I grew up with. He genuinely changed my life. When I started reading his books, I began setting goals and looking at things differently. If it wasn’t for Tony Robbins, I’d probably be a very different person, and wouldn’t be where I am right now. I look up to him a lot.” With the ground floor split into five key areas – the kitchen/ dining room; one relaxed lounging area; one more formal; a reading nook, and a games area complete with hot pink pool

Above: Mona’s love of pop art is displayed throughout the house, with her first and second acquisitions – Ride Fast and Ride Slow by Dubai-based, Italian artist Luca Valentini – taking pride of place above her hot pink pool table.

table and a gold and silver fussball table, the lounge by the piano is visually her favourite space in the house. “I like how clean and uncluttered it is. I feel very calm here,” she muses, sinking into a faux cream sheepskin chair. “But my taste in general is quite buzzy and fun. Like the pink pool table, the acryllic piano, the paintings. I like colour. I like gold. I like acryllic. I like pop art. I like bling. I like my home to feel fresh and eclectic, with pieces collected from all over the world.” As far as her favourite room in the house is concerned, however, there is no contest. “The product room of course!” she laughs. An entire room dedicated to Mona’s self-confessed addiction to perfume and make-up, the meticulously organised space is home to her huge collection of fragrances – which currently stands at around 1,500 bottles – and thousands of cosmetics. “It’s basically a trap. I go in there to grab a lipstick, and I don’t come out for three hours. I end up spraying myself with a bunch of different perfumes and trying on lots of make-up. Then I start re-organising things, and lose my head, and before I know it, it’s 9.30 and I have to go to bed! So when I go in, I try and do it really fast. But sometimes, resistance is futile. It just sucks me in, and someone has to drag me out.” Mona’s passion for perfume, however, hasn’t gone to waste. Indeed, her love of fragrance inspired one of the latest arms of the Huda Beauty business – Kayali – which translates from Arabic as ‘My Imagination’ and was launched to critical acclaim at the end of last year. “Watching the Kayali brand

If it wasn’t for Tony Robbins, I’d probably be a very different person. I probably wouldn’t be where I am right now.” Mona Kattan

grow is such a personal achievement for me, because I’ve always wanted to launch a perfume, and because of how Huda Beauty has developed, it’s allowed me to fulfil one of my lifelong ambitions,” says Mona, as she layers us in three of the scents from her debut, four-piece line. “When I was younger, I wanted to be in beauty, or fashion, or be a doctor – basically to be a creative, or help people – but I ended up in finance. I was so into it too. I wore a power suit to work every day, and I was so serious about my job. But my soul was dying.” And much like Mona credits Tony Robbins for changing her life, helping her focus on achieving her childhood beauty business dreams, had she continued as a banker, she feels the place she calls home would look very different too. “My career choice has definitely inspired the interiors here,” she reflects. “Beauty is all about creativity, and thinking without barriers. The industry I’m in is so inspiring that you think without limitations, and focus on colour and texture and mood. I feel I’m now exposed to a lot more fun, creative and inspiring things than I ever was before. If I’d stayed in banking, I’m pretty sure my home would look very different to how it does now.” As befits a woman absorbed in the beauty world, it makes sense Mona’s house boasts its own spa and gym – where she works out at 6.30am every day with her personal trainer. “It’s a real treat to have that in the basement,” she says. “I try and get into the spa for a weekly massage, and I love the fact I can get my hair washed properly at home in this teeny salon.” Dubbing her house “a work in progress” Mona intends to keep a base in Dubai, but plans to have homes in both the US and the UK as the Huda Beauty empire grows. “I definitely want to be based in LA, and have more of a global presence,” she reveals. “We spend between two to three months of the year in LA anyway, because I love it there, but I’d like to have a place in London. Having a global perspective really opens up your creativity, and opens your mind. You see the world so differently. Saying that, I’d love a place where I could totally switch off from work, like Bali or Thailand or Jamaica.” Nodding to the paintings above her pool table as if to remind herself of her work-life balance mantra, she laughs, “Ride fast, ride slow, right?”
