race you down the stairs! I call dibs on the middle!

oh, fuck yeah!

....shit.

!!

woo!!

Sorry! Let me get that...

sorry again, sir.

AH, PFFT! I’M JUST HAPPY TO SEE SOMEONE ENJOYING THIS PLACE. WHAT EXACTLY IS THIS?

WE’RE NOT SURE.

THEY JUST STARTED APPEARING ONE DAY.

They?

YEAH. THE FIRST ONE, AS FAR AS WE CAN TELL, ACTUALLY APPEARED IN OUR APARTMENT BUILDING.

Well, kind of...

...It’s in between our Building and the next one.

Here, we can show you some pictures

IT’S OBVIOUSLY ARCHITECTURAL IN NATURE. SO OUR BEST GUESS IS THAT IT’S AIMING TO CHANGE THE STATUS QUO...

...BY FORCING A NEW RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE PEOPLE WALKING BY AND THESE ARCHITECTURAL THINGS.

AND BETWEEN each other.

YES, BUT that’s not the case FOR ALL OF THE ONES WE’VE SEEN.

Some seem to focus more on people versus people --

-and others on architecture versus architecture instead.

but this first one...It changes the way people move up to their apartments.

It chose to appear in between - the walls that originally separated the two buildings have disappeared, and the original stairwells did too.

*SECTION _CANALST_01.PDF

That leads us to believe that this one wants to make people interact with each other: the people from our building and the people from the other building.

look here, it also has all this other random shit.

That looks like a ladder here, and these things are maybe like Fireman poles? These straight things here. Like we could slide down them. That’s definitely commentary on vertical relocation.

Stairs are so last week.

Check this one out: our friend fit perfectly into this wall...And then accidentally took a nap there!

and this was a chair-ish arrangement of the railings--

--so we think it’s a re-imagination of circulation space in general.

*MODEL _CANALST_OVERALL.jpg

Circulation space is by definition transitory and dynamic. These things introduce a static component to the space.

Kind of like this one we’re in right now--a subway station.

Some of them are even between architecture and the city itself.

More so than this one?

Here, this is the best picture we have of it - from across the street.

we haven’t figured out how to get up there; we think it’s private, and only accessible for the people who live above those shops.

See, there’s a couple street-level hints of it, but man, It was wild to see it from the balcony of the new museum.

One week it wasn’t there, and then we went again and bam! There it was.

It doesn’t look very tall, but isn’t there legislation on air rights here in New York?

yup!

*SECTION _BOWERY_01.PDF

While Air rights laws can make sense and usually help improve quality of light, and therefore quality of life, they’re obviously born out of capitalism.

Ah, money: the hierarchy of all hierarchies...

Because “air property can be purchased.

So this one just says “fuck you” to all those laws.

*SECTION _BOWERY_02.PDF

It crawls over all of these rooftops simultaneously, because what do air rights and property lines even mean, anyway?

Those are just hierarchical constructs. But hey, look at this next one...

...a while later... ...And those are all eighteen we’ve found.

Fantastic!

We should let you get going... ...But If you find any more during your time in New York, let us know!

Of course!

We hope to hear from you!

Thanks!

Today’s was cool!

Yeah, that was the first one to go so deep underground.

Being located by times square is probably pretty significant.

To reach tourists? I dunno, There are a lot of offices there too...

We should keep an eye on the financial district then.

Unless it’s actually about the subway.

LIKE IT’S COMMENTING ON COMMUTING.

Whatever it is, this definitely won’t be the last one.

“to be continued...” ...The heterarchy doesn’t end here...

-EPILOGUEHey, we got an email from the man we met yesterday!
