MUSEUM OF TIME

KASTRUP FORTET, COPENHAGEN, DENMARK FALL 2015 | INSTRUCTOR - HEIDI CATHRINE Ă˜STERGAARD

RANSFORM

Art is arguably the easiest way to understand history and time. MoT not only seeks to transform how art is viewed, it also transforms use of the old land fortress. MoT organizes its contents in a grid that relates cultures across time in a visual representation of the relationship between humans and time. The collection is organized by year, allowing a comprehensive and linear understanding of the history of art, and thus, a history of time. We have always tried to ground it, to seize it, but time exists apart from us and floats away from us. It, like art, informs our decisions. MoT shows the weight and power of time over us, reminding us that we are subservient to time.

DIVERSIFY HOMOGENEITY

SHENZHEN, CHINA WINTER/SPRING 2015 | INSTRUCTOR - MARGARIDA YIN

CHRYSALIS

“If you ask a classroom of Chinese students to draw a cat, they will all draw the same cat. A quote from a Chinese art teacher that easily reveals the homogeneity of the society. CHRYSALIS aims to alleviate this problem by showing, through architecture, that there are multiple pathways to an end result. A corridor gallery intersects and winds itself through the structure, displaying work or students at work, branching between spaces that are each unique. Three layers of ribbons wrap the building; one acts as an encompassing shade, the next as an interactive level, and the last as an intersecting and drilling piece, and all create non-rigid spaces in between to further indicate fewer boundaries and restrictions.

RISK

A FIELD, TANZANIA FALL 2014 | INSTRUCTOR - THOMAS FOWLER

--]PLOSION

motels are places that people go to change an opinion on something or to find a new perspective. being a temporary inhabitant of a permanent structure allows for a change in perception on time and leads to a potential sense of vulnerability. there’s a certain risk involved in deciding to temporarily inhabit a space, because sometimes, the next step forward is unclear. [--]PLOSION is a collection of spaces that attempt to keep its transitory inhabitants on edge. shard-like units connect via identical notches and hold each other together in suspension. the motel living spaces are generated by a more random arrangement of notched triangles potentially assembled by the inhabitants themselves, while larger spaces are formed by a system of column framing based on the notched triangles and are modularly constructed and connected.
