The long summer holidays are almost upon us and very soon pencil cases will be packed away, lunch boxes will be placed in the cupboard and uniforms will be washed, ironed and stashed at the back of the wardrobe.
Holidaying with children

While some families might be jetting off for a week in the sun, many of us will be staying put at home and this year, a ‘staycation’ definitely does not mean cutting back on the fun. This edition of Molly’s Guide is packed full of ideas to keep you all occupied over the coming six week break. From popular diary dates such as Lincoln’s Punch and Judy Festival and Dragon Boat Race to poignant events to commemorate the First World War, there’s plenty happening on our doorstep.

If you can’t get to the coast this year, you can still enjoy a slice of the seaside in the city of Lincoln as its popular beach attraction returns on July 18. Through to September, you can make sandcastles, sit on the deckchairs and enjoy ice creams and fairground rides. And if music is more your thing, make sure you check out Oxjam’s family festival at the Jolly Brewer pub on August 13th. Elsewhere in the magazine, we visit some of the county’s finest family attractions, profile a popular local theatre school and our regular columnists reflect on summer days gone by. Finally, if your little one is about to begin considering their choice of future secondary school, don’t forget to make a note of the school open days, which will be coming up over the next few months. Have a great summer – and here’s hoping you need the sunscreen more often than you need the wellies!

Desperate Dad
Footsteps to freedom... Walking home from the park with my eldest one recent sunny Sunday afternoon, I had another one of those ‘moments’. You know the ones I mean? When time seems to stand still, the universe and everything makes sense for a millisecond and you realise exactly why you were put here in the first place. Looking back, it was just a simple question - an innocent request, but it really got me thinking and unlocked many memories that I thought were buried way down in the depths of my mind. We were yards from home, about to come to the end of a passageway before the start of our road when my boy who was just ahead of me, glanced back and nonchalantly said: ‘Daddy, can I walk the rest of the way on my own please?’ WHAM! Planets aligned, shooting stars collided, Moses parted the Red Sea again and somewhere Stephen Hawking snorted. It hit me hard - right in the guts, I panicked - had to make an on-the-spot decision everything inside me was screaming NO! And in that moment I was transported back to a time when my only worry was how many grazed knees I’d notch up in a week. A time when my bike was my bestest best friend and summers were always summery. With a freedom stretching out in front of me that felt like nothing else on earth – when the world was my oyster and I could accomplish anything. So through a cold sweat, shaking and barely audible I suddenly heard some idiot utter: ‘Of course you can mate - but don’t run.’ It’s probably the very first time I’ve ever let him out of my sight when supervising. It was only for 20 seconds, until I rounded the corner and saw his blonde head bobbing safely up and down over next door’s hedge as he sprinted up the drive and into the back garden.

Summer 2016
But the shackles had been broken and I knew it was the start of something different, something scary and something I’m going to really struggle with. He’s only seven but he’s beginning to realise there’s a big wide world out there. And who am I to stop him? Thirty years ago those summers were mine. You wouldn’t see me for dust at weekends and during school holidays, with that best friend needing to be surgically removed at bedtimes.

Those endless golden days out on the streets, with no hope of contacting home unless you had 20p in your pocket and a phone box nearby, are sadly long gone. Whether we like it or not, society has changed, and with it childhood has taken a tumble. Not irreversibly so, but enough to make young parents too wary to wave off without a care.

Schools do not hold eye tests
Today, letting either of my blonde bombshells walk to school, the park or friends’ houses alone seems completely out of the question for me and I can’t see it ever being the answer. How to reconcile this and determine at exactly what age I will feel ok about them doing it is something that’s going to keep me awake of a night or ten dozen that’s for sure. So for now I think it’ll be little and not too often, a bit of appropriately managed freedom, until I’m prepared for the apron string elastic to snap once and for all. And you never know, while I’m still clinging on in desperation we might even hit some of those sensational summers together. As that inevitable freedom beckons and childhood hangs by its heartbreakingly final floundering threads.

Family holidays
Holidaying with children: It’s not a rest, it’s an adventure Have I ever told you about the time Mr C and I took our then five year-old daughter away on a cruise around the Mediterranean? No? Then, pull up a pew… I was due a break. I had just had a promotion at work and to be honest, I was a feeling a tad burnt out. I needed a holiday. Much as I love discovering all that Britain has to offer, I didn’t fancy a week of braving unpredictable weather. I wanted to lounge on a lilo and feel the sun on my face. Just leafing through a holiday brochure made me feel more relaxed. I pointed out a few Greek villas out to my husband. He went all B.A. Baracus from the A-Team on me. “I ain’t getting on a plane,” he said. I realised I would have to drug his morning cuppa to get him on a flight with his family, such was his conviction. I came to the conclusion drugging my other half was probably not ethical, or legal and we’d be thrown off the plane anyway. How to get to the sunshine without flying? A cruise! We booked. We persuaded my parents (who are avid ocean-farers) to come along too, thinking they may come in handy for advice on how to get the most out of our adventure. That and potential baby-sitting duties. A few weeks later, we travelled to Southampton to ‘catch the boat’. The sun was shining as we sat on the top deck of P&O’s impressive ship – The Ventura - and sipped Bucks Fizz. We watched the shore disappear and then went for a meal in one of the impressive restaurants. I decided I liked cruising. At around three in the morning, I decided I didn’t like cruising. We were crossing the Bay of Biscay. Ask anyone, this bay is considered a baptism of fire for first-time cruise trippers. If you come out the other side without having been sick, you get a medal. None of the Curtis family were awarded such a medal. We were fighting for the bathroom all morning.

Summer 2016
But as Mr C and my daughter found their sea legs, mine were nowhere to be seen. I took a travel pill, to ease the nausea and spent the rest of the day flat out on a sun-lounger. I hadn’t realised travel pills work by rendering you virtually unconscious. (I took note for any future flights I may want to take with Mr C. Three tablets would do the trick). By the end of Day Two, I had acclimatised. I started to enjoy myself. I could see why my parents, who have been on more than 12 cruises in as many years, rave about their experiences. Cruise ships are basically enormous, floating fivestar hotels. Everything is designed to be easy for passengers, particularly those travelling with children, from tiddlers to teens, there is something for all age ranges.
But the trip wasn’t over.
By Day Three, I was in the swing of life at sea. We put our shy (well, she was back then) daughter into the care of the friendly team at the kids club and Mr C and I enjoyed some couple time. That’s not a euphemism. By that, I mean we read our books, drank an ice cold beer and held a conversation without the five-year-old tugging one of us away to go swimming.
That was when Mr C lost his mind.
In the evenings, we went to watch amazing live shows, dined in a la carte restaurants and drank a few cocktails.
As Lottie slept through her dad’s temporary insanity, I reassured him this wasn’t the set of a movie and all would be well.
On Day Five, which was a day in port, I woke up with a fresh problem. Let’s just say, the thought of leaving the ship and access to a loo was terrifying.
Then I went back to sleep.
So, Mr C, Lottie and my folks disembarked to wander around on dry land for a few hours and I stayed behind. As the day progressed, I started to feel worse. To add to my woes, we were heading home and that meant enduring the dreaded Bay of Vomit (as I had renamed the Bay of Biscay). In the end, I went to see the ship’s doctor, who gave me an injection to ease my nausea, among other things. If I thought the pills were a good sedative, the effects of the injection was almost instantaneous. My eyelids came down like shutters and I lost the power of speech. Mr C had to all but carry me back to our cabin. I don’t recall the next few hours. I know my parents took Lottie to see The Magic of Abba show in the evening and Mr C watched films in the cabin, as I snoozed my way through what was probably a tummy bug. Newspaper columnist Sam Curtis, 46, lives in Lincoln, in a house that’s not as clean or tidy as she’d like with her husband Leigh and their two children, Lottie, 10, and Louie, 2.
Our final stopover in France was aborted by the ship’s captain - conditions at sea had made it too risky to head into the small port of La Rochelle. We were told by the crew to stay in our cabins. As the waves crashed outside the porthole, he became convinced terrorists had taken over the ship and that was the reason for the diversion. At that point, I wondered if I could get hold of a syringe of whatever the doctor had given me.
Several hours later, we were back at Southampton. I can honestly say, I have never been more relieved to see dry land. But why recall this story now? (I am clearly still slightly traumatised…) For this reason, dear reader. The school holidays are coming. Some of us may be heading off on what we hope will be a holiday of a lifetime. We are all very excited. Chances are, your trip will go off without incident. However, if you are going on holiday with your family here is my advice: Keep your expectations low. Anticipate that something will go awry. Something you can’t plan for. If you do this, you won’t be disappointed when a bout of diarrhoea lays your entire family low for three of the seven days of your trip; your suitcases end up in Turkey while you are in Greece; you encounter a freak weather phenomenon or a camel eats your passport. And remember, a break away with little people isn’t a rest. It’s an adventure. You can follow Sam on: Twitter: @sammanfa Instagram: sammanfa1 Facebook: SamCurtisWrites www.mollysguide.co.uk

The Priory Academy LSST
Students and their families are attracted by the academy’s unique environment. The achievement of academic excellence and the development of an individual’s true potential are pursued with passion and commitment within the local, national and international communities. Students, from the day they arrive in Year 7, are encouraged to participate fully in all that the academy has to offer. It is expected that the relationship will last until, and even beyond, the time when they progress from Sixth Form to university, training, employment and their chosen careers. Parents and carers also appreciate and support the high expectations of achievement, behaviour and uniform that are established clearly and consistently. The Priory’s exceptional learning environment, thoughtfully fostered for many years, has been complemented in recent times by the addition of a new sports hall, planetarium and Sixth Form study centre.
A unique environment The Priory Academy LSST, one of the top-performing non-selective State schools in the country, continues to build on its successful and respected reputation.
Judged as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted in its most recent inspection, The Priory continues to post excellent examination results, including a 90% pass rate for five or more A*-C grades (including English and Maths) at GCSE. The aspirational emphasis also helps students progress to the country’s top universities, including Oxbridge and the rest of the Russell Group. The academy’s motto, Courage and Courtesy, underpins all that The Priory encourages students to show during their time in school and when they leave. The academy wants students to have the courage to do what is right and follow their dreams, and to do so with courtesy and the utmost respect for others and their environment.

Funded nursery places for 2-4 year olds...
EDUCATION
Kingsdown Nursery
Do you have a 2, 3 or 4 year old? If so, do you know that the Government is providing funding for some 2 year olds, and all 3 and 4 year olds to attend Kingsdown Nursery for 15 hours a week? Young children can have great fun playing with or alongside other children, exploring paint, water, clay and playing outside in a safe, well-equipped play area. As well as the benefits for the children, having a part time nursery place at Kingsdown, can give parents and carers a welcome break from the demands of a busy toddler or young child. It can give you extra time to go shopping, do some housework, look after the baby, take a college course, do extra hours at work or just have a cup of coffee in peace and quiet, and drink it while it’s still hot! Most children attend Kingsdown for 5 mornings a week, or 5 afternoons, some do 2 ½ or 3 days a week. Coming regularly helps children develop friendships and positive relationships with staff and other children. Some children attend 5 days a week, with parents buying additional places. We also run a before and after school club if you need care outside of traditional school hours. Families who are not eligible for the Government 2 year funding often use their Child Benefit to buy one or two sessions a week to help their child develop their social skills ready for starting school. At Kingsdown we offer a wonderful engaging environment, both indoors and outdoors. Children have access to top quality resources and fully qualified staff, both teachers and Early Years Practitioners. We teach children to share, take turns, learn about letters and numbers, paint, write and draw, ride, climb, explore and investigate. Throughout the year, Kingsdown provides many opportunities for children to experience nature in all its forms. We have a bird’s nesting box with a camera in and currently there are 8 eggs waiting to be hatched. Children eagerly watch the laptop to see if the eggs have hatched yet. Kingsdown
is fortunate to be near Birchwood Nature Park and we regularly take groups of children for walks there, to look for mini-beasts and to study the changing seasons. All children have weekly music lessons with Pete the Music Man. Pete brings his Double Bass and Guitar and enough musical instruments for all children to have a go! We also have Stuart from Meet the Beasts in with his exotic pets, snakes, lizards, spiders, insects and snails. Children can wear their own clothes but many wear our uniform of red or blue polo shirt and sweatshirt. Children invariably join in with messy activities at nursery and if they have their Kingsdown uniform on, they are hard wearing and will stand up to the demands of a busy day at nursery!

Book reviews
Exploring great reading ideas... Bookseller Deborah Holland from Waterstones in High Street, Lincoln, recommends nine titles to get stuck into this summer…
The Uncommoners – The Crooked Sixpence by Jennifer Bell The Detective Dog by Julia Donaldson and Sara Ogilvie Pan Macmillan (9781509801596) Nell is a dog with a great sense of smell. She is Peter’s dog and can detect anything! From the whereabouts of lost clothing or who dispatched a poo on the gravel. Every Monday she goes to school with Peter to listen to the children reading books. She loves it until one Monday she arrives to find the teacher and children in despair. ALL the books have gone missing! Will Detective Nell save the day and find the culprit? This has already become a favourite almost immediately with me. Not only because of the subject matter or the rhyming story but because these two are a dream team. Can’t wait to see more from them.
Random House Children’s Publishers UK (9780552572507) This magical debut is one to watch. The story starts with Ivy and her brother, Seb, accompanying their Grandma in an ambulance. Little did they know that this was the beginning of events that would lead them to discover another world. A world where ordinary objects have fantastical powers. A world called Lundinor. A world that might hold the mystery of Grandma’s forgotten past. This fast paced adventure is perfect for fans of Harry Potter and I can’t wait for the next instalment in this trilogy. My eldest daughter was quiet all day reading it (and under the covers that evening) so a winner in this household!
Voyage to Magical North – The Accidental Pirates by Claire Fayers Pan Macmillan (9781447290605) Summer isn’t complete without a pirate adventure. How about one with magic thrown in? Brine Seaborne was abandoned by her parents and left in service to a grumpy magician. An accident with the magicians’ shard of rare starshell forces Brine to flee with the magicians’ apprentice, Peter, to the sea. Getting captured by pirates is when things get really interesting. This book really has everything – magic, pirates, monsters, dragons and acts of heroism aplenty. A page turner for ages 8 years+. Looking forward to the sequel...
The Bumblebear by Nadia Shireen
Random House Children’s Publishers UK (9781780080154) Imagine loving honey so much you disguise yourself as a bee so you could steal it? Norman the bear does just that. He becomes a giant bee. He even gets accepted at Bee school. However one of the bees becomes suspicious and he is found out! Will his friends he forgive him or will he have to buzz of? Brilliant pictures, a great story and incredibly cute.

Summer 2016
Max and Bird by Ed Vere Penguin Books Ltd (9780241240199) I’m a big fan of Ed Vere and fell in love with Max the kitten as did my 4 and 7 year olds. Max met Bird and wanted to be friends. He wanted to chase and then eat Bird. After all that is nature. Bird tried to explain that’s not how friendship worked or maybe it is? This book and the other Max books are perfect bedtime stories and can be used as conversation starters with your pre-schooler.
BFG – Waterstones exclusive edition by Roald Dahl Penguin Books Ltd (9780141372839) Being a huge Roald Dahl fan and with the eagerly awaited Steven Spielberg film of the BFG I just had to feature it. It is also 100 years since Roald Dahl’s birth with many of his books having new covers. Though the BFG is in paperback there is also this hardback version with neverbefore -seen illustrations from Quentin Blake. The Big Friendly Giant is a classic that I have nothing more to say about it other than it is a gloriumptious and wondercrump story.
Amazing Animal Journeys by Chris Packham and Jason Cockcroft Egmont UK Ltd (9781405283380) Set in a picture book format this is a brilliant book on migration for ages 4 years onwards. It’s written by Chris Packham who is famously known for the BBC programme Springwatch and has stunning illustrations from Jason Cockcroft. Featuring creatures like the Blue Whale, Barn Swallows and Leatherback Turtles this book would appeal to any budding nature enthusiast. Waterstones holds weekly Sunday storytimes throughout the year and has a programme of summer holiday activities too.
The World’s Worst Children by David Walliams HarperCollins Publishers (9780008197032) Mr Walliams has done it again with this collection of short stories about the world’s worst children. From Dribbling Drew and Windy Mindy to Sofia Sofa -I dare you not to laugh out loud. While at work and at home I have heard the sniggering and giggling from children absorbed in a David Walliams book and love hearing children excitedly shout ‘Yes!’ when they spot a new book of his. I can’t wait to see what treats David Walliams might have for us later on in the year. No pressure!

TRSPA
Curtain calls for youngsters to open up imaginations Getting up on stage and singing and dancing in front of a room full of people may not be everyone’s cup of tea. But for little ones who have a theatrical flair, drama classes might be just the ticket.
Lincoln’s Theatre School of Performing Arts, or TRSPA for short, has been running for 16 years and offers fun, family friendly and informal sessions, all under the watchful eye of seasoned acting professional and group manager Anne Rachel MacLachlan (51). With a varied and distinguished acting career, Anne and her troupe of trusty TRSPA trainers welcome youngsters from the tender age of three, to come along, have a sing and a dance and make new friends. “The school was formed to provide a safe, fun, accessible and high quality creative theatrical and performance experience for local children, and to nurture budding talent,” said Anne, who’s previous experiences include a number of stage, screen and dancing roles. “Classes involve learning dance, singing, acting and mime skills, which in turn unlock children’s imaginations and help develop communication and confidence skills, as well as allowing them to have lots of fun and encourage fitness along the way.” The school is managed by Anne, but owned by Lincolnbased entertainment boss Chris Moreno, who’s written, produced and directed a host of theatre shows across the world. TRSPA runs classes in two age categories - one for children aged three to eight - the other for youngsters aged eight to 19. Participants do not need to audition for a place, all adding to the inclusive and non-selective style of learning.

“All of them learn to work as a team and build close friendships - we have some who started with us at the age of four and are still with us come 18,” said Anne Anne trained at the Nottingham Academy of Speech, Dance and Drama, specialising in mime. She completed her studies at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), gaining two teaching diplomas by the time she was 18, before later returning to Nottingham as deputy principal of the academy. After treading the boards at East Sussex’s prestigious Glyndebourne opera house as a baroque dancer, and performing in pantomime and cabaret shows, Anne worked in various film and TV productions, later joining The Black and White Minstrel Show as a Tiller Girl before taking a career break to concentrate on bringing up her children. As well as teaching at TRSPA, Anne also runs her own school of drama focusing on LAMDA examinations and helping to prepare youngsters for life in the limelight. She said that the joy of watching fledgling actors grow in confidence in lessons always keeps her coming back for repeat performances. “Their imaginations have no barriers and you can see the delight in their faces when they are crawling around the room pretending to be cats or learning new dance skills to put to a musical theatre song,” added Anne. “Having a parent come up to me to say they’ve noticed a difference in their child’s confidence since they started lessons, or hearing a student say they can’t wait to come back next week is motivation enough for me to carry on. “Whilst some students do have natural ability, techniques can be honed - a good performer is someone who can ‘own the stage’, oozing naturalness and spontaneity – smiling and showing confidence is key.” The school has strong links with Lincoln Theatre Royal and once a year the youngsters show off the skills they’ve learnt in class in their end of year show – Skool’s Out For Summer – live on stage at the famous city playhouse. “The children adore performing at the theatre - it gives them the chance to be on a full stage, using professional lighting and sound and with the support of a large audience – it’s the best buzz in the world,” said Anne.
We also throw an end of term party for the older children.”
“Some young students prefer to watch a couple of classes to feel settled, then within a few weeks they are running into class and sharing their stories,”
“We also perform a Christmas Song and Dance Spectacular show at the Priory Witham Academy in Lincoln, where lessons are taught during the year. “We run competitions, hold workshops and have a prize giving ceremony for all children where they receive certificates and trophies for specific awards.
Previous TRSPA pupils have gained entry into a number of renowned acting schools such as RADA and secured some impressive starring roles including appearances in Sweeney Todd alongside Michael Ball and the UK tour of Mamma Mia. Others have gone on to feature in musicals such as Annie and The Sound Of Music.
TRSPA classes run on Saturdays from 9am through to 5pm and on Sundays from 10am to 2pm.

Woodland Trust offers Tree Party Packs to children in Lincolnshire this summer
ENTERTAINMENT
Woodland Trust
Send in your ‘Tree party’ photos and you could win £1000 worth of Sainsbury’s vouchers. The Woodland Trust has designed new “tree party” packs for families in Lincolnshire to use outside over the summer holidays. The packs are a fun way to learn more about nature whilst enjoying the outdoors, away from televisions and computer screens. The packs (see photo below) include lots of activities to enjoy in the company of woods and trees including a spotter sheet, scavenger hunts, straws and sticker books and much more - in fact it’s everything a family will need to host a tree party. Families are then encouraged to send in their picnic photographs, stories and recipes to the Woodland Trust to win Sainsbury’s vouchers to the value of £1000. The Trust wants to encourage families and friends to host a picnic in a park or woods. For those who don’t live near local woodland, they can invite their
favourite tree in a garden or park to be their guest of honour. It is a great opportunity to forget about the hustle and bustle of city life. The woods are great places for children to explore and learn in; they’re filled with countless trees, plants and animals to discover. The Trust highly recommends a visit to Old Wood, Skellingthorpe which is a great site for family picnics and easily accessible. Another popular site is Londonthorpe near Grantham. You can find your nearest wood with our wood finder on its website. Karen Letten, the Community Engagement Manager at the Woodland Trust said: “An increasing amount of research suggests fewer children are playing outside and we want kids to reconnect with nature. “Inviting a Tree for Tea is a fab, inexpensive way to keep them entertained and encourages them to play outside in the holidays. “Hearing ‘I’m bored’ is every parent’s nightmare but a tree party picnic doesn’t have to rely on the weather. The rain won’t
stop the fun; children love building dens but hopefully there will be lots of sun this summer too.” The Woodland Trust wants people to take time out to enjoy woods and trees and help preserve them for future generations. The tree party is a free, fun initiative designed to bring people together and realise life’s better with trees. It’s a chance for people to celebrate trees and learn more about them.

On Your Jollies Summer Show...
Oxjam Lincoln
Oxjam Lincoln 2016 returns for the team’s third consecutive year fundraising for Oxfam through multiple music events in the heart of Lincoln. The team raised in excess of £1,800 last year through 12 music events during August-October and this success saw the team finish third place out of over 350 gig makers nationwide. This success shows the amount of work, energy and passion the small team of volunteers contribute but also the kindness and generosity of those who have attended their events. Oxjam Ann, the coordinator for Oxjam Lincoln explains: “We were over the moon to find out we have been so successful and have the recognition from Oxfam. More importantly the donations and support we received from our performers, our audiences and our host venues. I think credit has to be paid to small team of volunteers, without them we wouldn’t be able to put our events on with continued success. We are recruiting for volunteers for this year to continue the passion to make a difference for the global community as well as highlight the great music locally.” Oxjam Lincoln 2016 focuses their efforts on 5 events this year, and this year marks the 10th year of Oxjam Music Festival. Their first event is Oxjam on Your Jollies Summer Show on 13th August which is an all day and night event at the Jolly Brewer. On Your Jollies Summer Show is a family show, and is a special all day and night music extravagance which will take place on Saturday 13th August at the Jolly Brewer, between 3-11pm in the Beer Garden and is free entry. The event will be a showcase the best of local musicians and original material and a wide range of musical genres ranging from pop, indie, rock, folk, country and rockabilly, as well as a touch of African Drumming to kick the day off! Acts confirmed to perform are: Georgie Hanson, The Procrastinators, Tyrants, 13 Women, The Ocean Hounds, 41 Ford and Falling Lights. There will also be face painting and henna during the day, as well as a special guest appearance of Nautical Nelly courtesy of Once upon a Party, this will be a special meet and greet opportunity between 3.304.30pm which the little ones will enjoy. So come join our swashbuckling fun and have a dance in the Beer Garden, all are welcome, enjoy the music and soak up the sun! Refreshments and food will be available throughout the day.
There will be a raffle during the event with all funds going towards Oxfam, all donations are gratefully welcome as with every £1 donated - 84p directly goes into Oxfam’s emergency aid and campaign work by Oxfam. This year to reflect Oxfam’s campaign work, the team are emphasising and raising the awareness of Girl Power and equality for all with their all girl gig on the 14th October and this event will take place at The Scene. Oxjam Ann, the coordinator for Oxjam Lincoln explains: “The idea of ‘GIRL POWER! Sing Out Sisters!’ began as a cheeky wink to the anniversary of the Spice Girls this year, but everyone knows the story of Malala Yousafzai and her influence to empower other women to stand up for their rights and equality. The work of Oxfam is to make sure women have the chance to learn or build their skills to start their own businesses in order to provide for their family and better themselves.” The Jolly Brewer will further host ROXJAM 3 on Saturday 10th September; the remaining events include ‘Oxjam Cabaret’ at Madame Waffle on 30th September, ‘GIRL POWER! Sing Out Sisters!’ at The Scene on 14th October and ‘Roar Liquor 2’ at Liquor on 15th October. Oxjam Lincoln is looking for volunteers to help at its events but also any local businesses who wish to donate raffle prizes or help in terms of sponsorship or funding or wish to engage with the local community as Oxjam is very much about the local community and welcome more people to get involved and attend their events.

Heritage Lincolnshire
County set for its biggest Heritage Open Days Festival! After a successful 23 years, Lincolnshire Heritage Open Days Festival 2016 is set to wow visitors with more than 180 FREE events across the county this autumn. Heritage Lincolnshire, a local charity based in Heckington, is urging members of the public to pick up a free Heritage Open Days brochure from their local library, tourist information centre or heritage site so that visitors can plan for the festival in September. The charity is co-ordinating the festival for the 23d year and expects to attract thousands of visitors to over 180 heritage sites, talks and walks around the county. Events are predominantly organised and managed by volunteers who do a fantastic job bringing Lincolnshire’s history to life. This year’s Heritage Open Days will encompass heritage sites, buildings, nature reserves,
towns and villages and will feature all five National Trust properties, helping to make this the biggest and best festival yet. Each year the county’s Heritage Open Days have a different theme with many of this year’s events covering ‘Natural Lincolnshire’. Events on offer range from tours of haunted Old King’s Head in Kirton and a new Heritage Music Microfestival to a rare opening of Dowsby Hall and Gardens. There will be lots of guided walks and talks to choose from such as the International Bomber Command Spire Memorial, ‘Lincolnshire’s Lost River’, Willow Tree Fen Bat Walk, plus a rare guided tour of Torksey Castle. Booking-only favourites such as tours of Harlaxton Manor are also back so book early! Children’s activities will be on offer at Temple Bruer Knights Templar Tower, many Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust reserves, Gainsborough Old Hall and many more venues.
Beverley Gormley, Heritage Lincolnshire’s Cultural Events Officer said “Year after year, Lincolnshire’s Heritage Open Days prove a real winner with local people and visitors as they provide free, unique opportunities to go behind the scenes of heritage venues and discover the region’s hidden histories. “The events are a wonderful way of bringing people together to learn about their local history, enabling our local heritage venues, nature reserves, organisations, towns and villages to develop a lasting relationship with people in the area.” Pick up your free copy of the brochure from tourist information centres, libraries, heritage sites around the county, or download it from www.heritagelincolnshire.org

Whatever the weather this summer there’s lots to see and do in North Kesteven District Council’s exciting attractions, and what’s more – they’re free! Cranwell Aviation Heritage Centre tells the fascinating story of historic RAF Cranwell, from its beginnings as a Naval Airbase to its present standing as one of the world’s leading military academies. Why not try your hand at flying your own plane with our flight simulator - can you land a Jet Provost on the runway before your fuel runs out! Welbourn Forge is a hidden gem, tucked away in the picturesque village of Welbourn. Serving the local community for over a hundred years, the forge is still fired on the first Saturday of every month between 10am and 1pm. Take a step back in time as you feel the heat from the forge and hear the hammer ringing on the anvil as the blacksmith forges the metal. Cogglesford Watermill is one of the few working watermills in the country and has regular milling days on the second Sunday of the month. Here you can find out about the history of the mill and have a go at grinding flour from grain using our hand turned quern stones.
A short stroll along the River Slea brings you to Navigation House, once the company office for the Sleaford Navigation Company. The River Slea was once a bustling, busy place, carrying laden barges into the heart of Sleaford. At Navigation House you can learn how to weigh sacks of grain and play the Slea Navigation Game – see if you can beat your opponent’s barge as you make your way along the river! A fun way to explore both of these places as well as the riverside is the Riverside Discovery Trail. For just £1.50 you can use our trail leaflet to explore Sleaford’s delightful riverside and discover time capsules, art exhibitions and ancient graffiti carved by millers hundreds of years ago. All that is left to do then is claim your prize!

Adventures for mini explorers...
The Petwood Hotel
The Petwood Hotel has long been a favourite venue for family get-togethers and the gardens certainly contribute to this. “I love it when guests tell us of their childhood memories of the Petwood”, says Managing Director Emma Brealey. “In some cases, guests vividly recall memories from decades ago exploring the rhododendron tunnels after a family Sunday lunch with parents and grandparents. More recent stories include going on a Gruffalo hunt around the woods, or discovering ‘an enchanted forest’. It reminds us that a garden designed over 100 years ago for a wealthy Baroness has inspired many young, creative minds and provided enjoyment for thousands of people over the years”, Emma continued. It is hoped that this enjoyment will continue with the exciting restoration of the gardens this year, where the vision is to return the grounds to their Edwardian splendour as designed by the famous landscape architect Harold Peto. The first phase of the project completed in April and has been very well received by guests and visitors. The next phase will
commence at the end of August which will see the reinstatement of the Temple of Atalanta, a classical domed structure flanked by rose-covered pergolas, plus repairs to the formal terrace and relandscaping at the front of the hotel. Emma concluded, “Whether providing a beautiful setting for a relaxing drink on the terrace or the perfect backdrop for family photographs, we want the gardens to be enjoyed by everyone.”

Summer is finally here!
HOBBIES & ACTIVITIES
Ruddocks of Lincoln
Summer solstice has begun and this is the time where we can enjoy the warm weather & get involved in fun-filled summer activities. We hope this summer is filled with lots of sunshine so if you’re having a holiday near the coast or in the beautiful valleys up north, you can entertain your little ones with a times table CD. Learning though music is a fun way to learn the times table and other concepts including shapes, days and planets. This lyrical CD is an entertaining experience that you can join in with your children on the journey to your holiday destination. As much as we can hope for sunshine, however we all know that British weather can dampen our planned days throughout the holiday. If you are stuck on what to do on days like this come and join us in the summer workshops that run throughout August. In one of the workshops you can get messy with mod roc creating a spectacular space scene. And there is much more making to do, including making a birdhouse for all those birds that come into your garden over summer, carnival masks, hoop art and Olympic medals ready for the Olympics 2016. The workshops are a fantastic opportunity to get your children involved in being inventive and why not join in yourself, unleash your creativeness! Does it seem difficult finding something to do with your little boy and girl while you are away? TOPModel by Depesche is an imaginative island that allows you to create characters, from their fashion styles to their taste in music as well as a home, friends and family. The Macmillan Bake Off...
Merry Macs of Lincoln
School’s out for summer so what could be better than six weeks of blissful family time with your little ones... second only to cakes! We are encouraging everyone to get involved in our very first Macmillan Bake Off & Coffee Morning event on the 3rd September. It’s a fabulous opportunity for everyone to get baking and raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. It’s a chance for you to bake and munch your way through countless spongetacular delights and scrumbdelicious cupcakes… afterall, all the family loves cake (particularly when it comes to licking the cake bowl out afterwards). Here at Macmillan we are challenging you take part in an exciting new event. You can enter as a team, as a duo or individuals; be a pupil from a school and enter on behalf of that school, or any other organisation. If you are aged 9+ years get involved! All you have to do is bake your cake at home & bring it to the event. There’s also a tombola and a cracking ‘huge’ jar of jelly beans to be won - every parents nightmare, but lots of fun for children. Best of all the event is a family one, free for everybody to attend, we just ask for a donation of £3 to enter the competition (of which 100% goes to Macmillan). The Cake ‘Show’ begins at 11am with judging by the ladies from the Lincoln Women’s Institute starting shortly after. From 2pm we’ll all get to eat those devilishly delicious entries. Don’t worry
if you want to bake and don’t want to enter that’s ok too... we will be serving delicious tea and coffee and juices for the little ones. Cool trophies will be awarded for the top 3 in each age category and gift vouchers for the 1st place winners in each category. Why not brush up your skills for the Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning coming up on the 30th September?
